Writer offers tips on finding local trails ‘There are three kinds of sources for information: paper-based, Internet-based and GPSbased.’
SANDY MCRUER
Pac Rim Active “I’m new to town and I love to get out hiking. I’m told there are hundreds of trails but I don’t know where they are.” I have heard this kind of comment so many times over the years. I’ve heard so many people complain that there are no maps or signs. And it has been a source of frustration for many, many people. I’m not about to get started about how things should change. But I am about to give you some suggestions that might help. There are three kinds of sources for information; paperbased, Internet-based, and GPS-based.
There is a website where you can order the book, or check to see if there are updates to any of the trails. Or you can stop in at the Visitor Information Centre and pick one up. The other book is exclusively for trails in the Alberni area and is called the Alberni Valley Trail Guide. It has not been revised since 2006. So there are parts of it that are out of date. They are also available at the Visitor Information Centre. There are a couple of places where you can find maps and descriptions of trails in the valley on the internet. The Alberni Clayoquot Regional District has a list of eight trails on its website: www.acrd. bc.ca/trail-maps. Some of these are the
same as in the Alberni Valley Trail Guide. The visitors’ centre also has a tear-away map with some of these trails listed as well as directions. If you like strenuous hikes in the mountains, Quagger has a large variety of choices for you on his website, including many around the Alberni Valley. See http://islandhikes. com/. The PA Cyclers have a series of maps of trail rides around on their website: www.pacyclers.com/ Resources. There is also a quirky little document about “bouldering” at Sutton Creek: http:// members.shaw.ca/ suttonboulders/ Suttonboulders.pdf. There is also the local hiking club’s modest little website here: albernivalley
outdoorclub. wordpress.com/. But the best choice of places to hike is found in websites and smart phone apps devoted to GPS technology. The big advantage of this is that by using a GPS you have a huge level of certainty about where you are in unfamiliar terrain. Given that the signage for many trails is poor and changes have been made, having a GPS and knowing how to use it is very helpful. And there are a bunch of sites offering GPS. Below is a small sample of what is out there. I discovered Trailpeak a few years ago. It is focused mostly on Canada. If offers an ability to download GPS tracks to your device. You can either pay $25 for 10 credits and use them to download 10 tracks, or upload your own track to earn three credits for downloading. All the trails are uploaded by users so Trailpeak takes no responsibility for them. That being said, I’ve has no difficulties with them around here. There are around
Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada, will visit the Alberni Valley on Saturday, April 11 to support CourtenayAlberni Green Party candidate Glenn Sollitt.
May and Sollitt will be at the Starboard Grill at 8 a.m. and the train station at 9:10 a.m. Sollitt is a mechanical engineer from the Qualicum Beach.
The son of a commercial fisher, Sollitt has spent time himself commercial fishing off the west coast. He owns Glacier View Seafoods Ltd. Sollitt is one of four candidates

There are two hiking books that cover the Alberni Valley area. One is called Hiking Trails 2: South-Central

30 trails available including three or four duplicates. I have uploaded a bunch myself. EveryTrail is most popular in the United States but is worldwide in scope. There are about 24 or so trail uploads. Some are of dubious quality. But there’s a very nice guide to Della Falls and Fossli Provincial Park. Downloading is free. And best of all, it can be used in a smart phone. A caution: smartphone batteries don’t last nearly as long as regular GPS devices. After two or three hours they will fail unless you have a portable iPhone charger. They are available now. Finally Wikiloc is much like Everytrail. You need to register, but it’s free and then the downloads are free. You can download the files to be compatible with smartphones, Garmin or Google Earth. You will be asked for a donation after you receive your file. At the moment there are about seven trails that people have uploaded. So that’s a basic primer for what’s on line for trails in the Alberni Valley. I urge you to get out and find your own trails, bring your iPhone and contribute to these apps. The word is out. People know there are trails. Do your part to help them find all the wonderful spots we know there are here. Next month I’ll give you some other ways to find trails.

HEALTHY LIVING
www.albernivalleynews.com A3
Health tip: Sharing mealtimes with elderly family members or friends can help identify potential eating and malnutritional issues.
e v i t c A
Good nutrition is a pillar to seniors’ health, quality of life SANDRA GENTLEMAN
Healthy Living
A
s people grow older, good nutrition is critical for quality of life and prevention of the downward spiral of decline in health. In Canada, it is estimated that more than half of people hospitalized who are over the age of 65 are considered clinically malnourished. Chronic disease, taking multiple medications, having dental or mouth problems, eating alone, lacking resources for access to healthy foods, and having dietary restrictions can all contribute to a person’s nutritional status that is lacking for optimum health and well being. A weakened immune system, which leads to increased risk of infections, poor wound healing and muscle weakness that results in falls and fractures can be some results of poor nutrition. In addition, poor eating habits can lead to further disinterest in meals and lack of appetite. This lack of interest only makes the problem worse. What is malnutrition?
It may seem straightforward, but there’s more to malnutrition than
simply not having access to food and a diet lacking in nutrients. In reality, it is more complicated than that. It can have complex causes as a result of a combination of physical, social and psychological issues. Here are 10 key questions about food and nutrition to consider asking yourself if you are over 65 years old, or if you have a friend/ family member who is elderly. Answering yes to any one of these critical questions indicates an increased risk of poor nutrition. I have: 1) An illness that
Good nutrition means good life for seniors.
affects what I can eat. 2) Fewer than two meals a day. 3) Few fruits, vegetables or milk products. 4) Three or more
drinks of wine, beer, or liquor daily. 5) Tooth or mouth problems. 6) Not enough money to buy the food I need. 7) Eaten alone most of the time. 8) Three or more different over-thecounter medications daily. 9) Lost or gained 10 pounds in last six months without wanting to. 10) Difficulties in shopping, cooking and/or feeding myself. This nutritional health checklist is a screening tool for the elderly and offers important information that affects general
health and well being. How can a loved one assist an elderly person whose health is declining? Ideas such as visiting at mealtimes—not just special occasions, but regular mealtimes— at different times of day can help identify potential eating issues. Are clothes fitting differently and/ or has weight changed unintentionally recently? Does the medicine cabinet look crowded and have many over-the-counter, plus prescription medications that may be affecting health (and nutrient absorption) in a
negative way? Are there problems with cuts or wounds that don’t heal, or bruising too easily? What about dentition and ability to chew and swallow foods adequately for good digestion and absorption? Bowel regularity affects overall nutritional status too. Is chronic constipation or diarrhea something that is a daily problem? Any of the above concerns may be a reason to seek more assistance through local physicians and/or health services. There are many community resources
available in Port Alberni that can be tapped into for help in guiding a strategy to improve an elderly person’s quality of life. With the aging population and growing problems of complex health issues, identifying seniors at risk is important to provide the care and service they require for better health. Next month: more information and practical tips for seniors looking to better their health. Sandra Gentleman, RD, is a local Registered Dietitian and steward of Canal Beach.

Facebook Thursday night. A little boy also said he saw a small white dog that looked like Charlie running down McIver. When I asked him when that was he said “tomorrow.” We continued to search in the woods and on the streets, as did so many of the incredibly helpful people in our neighbourhood and beyond. But now, a whole week later, we still haven’t a clue as to what happened to our precious pup, and the hollow feeling of distress is all consuming. As each day passes our feelings of hopefulness are replaced with helplessness.
We did everything that was recommended and more. I even looked into hiring a pet detective with a Bloodhound, but because Charlie didn’t use anything that would specifically have only his scent attached, that option wasn’t available to us. All we can do now is continue to look a few times a day, keep the word out and hope he’s alive, trying to make his way home, or being taken care of by someone who hasn’t reported him yet. Our family has been struggling emotionally, but my extreme feelings of guilt have been overwhelming. Why did I let our dogs off leash? Why didn’t I have a pet tracker device on them? The answer to the first question is that unless a dog needs to be contained, most people let their pets run gleefully free in the woods while walking behind. Continued / A16

Five and a half years ago my family and I fell in love with a pair of brother and sister Cockapoo puppies that we excitedly brought home. The male was blonde, like our son, and the female was honey, like our daughter. The kids named them Charlie and Lola, the names the children almost got instead of Sam and Daisy. On Monday, March 23 I lost sight of our beloved pets down by Powers Creek in Glenrosa, West Kelowna. I’d been hiking with them in the woods behind Last Mountain Park like I’ve done hundreds of times when the energetic pair heard a bird or something and whipped up the hill. My friend and I whistled and called their names, expecting them to circle back like they typically
to panic. What if he’d gone the wrong way and was hopelessly lost in the forest? What if a wild animal had attacked him? We cried ourselves to sleep that rainy night, worried sick over our sweet furry boy. As soon as it was light enough in the morning we took Lola and continued our search, laying out worn pieces of clothing and blankets that carried our scent along with bowls of water in the trails where I lost him. Over the next several days we put up hundreds of flyers and shed countless tears as we searched for Charlie who is tagged, tattooed and neutered. And then a young lady said she saw him four blocks from our house on McIver and McRae Road Wednesday afternoon. She hadn’t realized he was lost so she didn’t try to coax him over. “Wish I’d seen this post then,” she wrote on

The Sproat Lake Regatta has donated $1,000 toward keeping the Sproat Lake Marine Patrol operating. The Sproat Lake Marine Patrol has been operating for about 13 years, offering assistance to Alberni Valley and tourist boaters at the boat ramp. The patrol, made up of students, visits schools to promote the “Kids Don’t Float” boat safety program, talk about personal flotation devices (PFDs) and with older grades as well as boaters on the lake, the hazards of drinking and boating. In a November 2014 referendum, people in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District voted to keep the marine patrol and create a service area to fund it, switching from a grant-based system. This will ensure the ACRD can tax the service area for up to $30,000 to keep the marine patrol in operation. “But we’ve received

Charlie and Lola were at their happiest doing just that. The answer to the second is that I’d never heard of such a thing until recently. I’ll certainly be ordering a pet tracker device now. Sam and Daisy are only 14 and 11 years old, far younger than I was when I first experienced significant loss. I suppose they’re learning what we all experience in life— that grief won’t kill us and it is safe to feel sad. If we never see Charlie again, our sorrow and heartache will eventually transition to all the amazing and loving memories we have of him. But if we’re lucky enough to find our glorious guy alive and well, his four people and one sister will be elated and grateful beyond words. Come home, Charlie. Please come home.
