Marty Thomas of Grand Forks is the top guide in B.C. and the Yukon. Thomas was ecstatic and quite emotional when he found out he won the prestigious Leland award, which is presented by the Guide Outfitters Association of B.C. (GOABC) to their top guide. Thomas received the award, which is a beautiful bronze of a sheep, as well as a cheque for $1,000 and some cool gear from Sitka at the GOABC annual convention in Kelowna on March 28. “The award has been around for about 16 years,” said Thomas. “It’s named after a young guy, Leland Bradford, who lost his life in 1998. They pick it based on letters received by GOABC from hunters.” Thomas said the Leland committee then narrows it down to 10 guides and from there the executive determines the top three. “At the banquet each year the top three are selected to go on stage and are all introduced,” he said. “They talk about what guides do and what the Leland award is all about. Then they hand out the award.” Thomas said that he had finished in the top 10 several times and even came runner-up a few years ago for the award but then had put it out of his mind. But, he said, he had such a good year guiding last year that he went for it again and urged his hunters to write letters into the organization. “I had seven rams I guided and usually four is a good year,” he said. “They notified me in early January that I made top three. On the weekend I got it. It’s a long time away from your family every year, so this helps balance the effort.” Thomas has been a guide outfitter for over 31 years. He also owns Alpine Taxidermy and has been doing taxidermy for 31 years as well. Thomas said the reason he believes he was selected was because of his love for the job. “You’ve really got to love what you do to be a good guide,” he said. “It comes from the heart and if you love it, it’s not so much like work.” Thomas works up in northern B.C. with a company called Prophet Muskwa Outfitters. He leaves every year in mid-July and returns in midOctober.

I want some bunny to love (From left) Briseis Finstad, Pontiac Mace, Craig Tracy and Danica Roodzant got a chance to hold and pet some bunnies at the Easter Egg Hunt in City Park on Saturday. The Easter Egg Hunt was a big success with warm weather and an estimated 175 kids out. The event was sponsored by the River Valley Community Church and featured kids games, face painting as well as the hunt itself, of course. The bunnies were provided by James and Roma Hamilton. “My son (Mathew) has been my wrangler for four years, which is neat,” he said. “The day is filled with adventure. It’s not always good. You’ve got rainy and snowy and cold days. There’s lots of hiking and glassing (using binoculars) involved.” Thomas started guide outfitting in 1984 in the Flathead Valley near Fernie. He then guided on and off for Granby Outfitters. He spent 10 years in the Yukon. This year will be his 15th year with Prophet Muskwa. Thomas estimates that 80 per cent of his clientele are Americans and the rest are European, Mexican or Canadian. “We hunt everything: sheep, mountain goat, elk, grizzly bear, black bear and wolves,” said Thomas. Thomas said the key to a good guide is not only having heart and being strong-willed, but also having a good camp. “You need to get along with everyone in camp,” he said. “Everyone has to have a positive outlook. We have a cook, a wrangler and I’m the main guide and sometimes we have a secondary guide.” Thomas said the hunters fly into Fort St. John • See GUIDE page A3

Season wraps up for extreme weather shelter Grand Forks Gazette
The extreme weather shelter on Riverside Drive logged an increase of almost 200 bed nights over the previous year, representing an increase of more than 30 per cent. In the 2013-2014 season, the shelter’s first at its Riverside Drive location, 546 bed nights were recorded; this season, beds were filled 720 times. “It was really busy this year,” said Steven McGibbon, project coordinator for the BETHS (Boundary Emergency and Transition Housing Society) shelter. “It was a very challenging year. We had over 700 bed nights. What that means is that 700 times this year someone didn’t have to freeze to death or get sick. They had a place to go.” McGibbon said it was a successful year as far as how many people the shelter could help but it was challenging. “We had nights where we had 12 and really we’re only rated for seven,” he said. “That’s a comfortable number for us. When you get to 12 it’s overcrowded and challenging.” McGibbon said they fortunately didn’t have to turn anyone away from the shelter due to lack of space. They did turn a couple of people away for being too aggressive or not following the rules or filling out the forms. “Really, it was a very low percentage,” he said. This is the second season for BETHS in the Multi-Agency Accommodation Project (MAAP) building on Riverside.

It took a little bit of working but we managed to find a policy. That helps a lot of the people we are here to help. Their pets are their family.” In addition to Steven McGibbon, shelter coordinator, and Steve Muth, executive McGibbon, who director for BETHS, celebrate as they finish up the shelter’s second is full-time, the year in the MAAP building. shelter has five from being in the same situation if they part-time paid staff and 21 volunteers. Kelowna hosts youth parliament in May JACOB NOSEWORTHY
For the Grand Forks Gazette
The Southern Interior Youth Parliament (SIYP) is looking for interested youth to attend a great weekend of debate, fun, and parliament. The three-day event will be held at Kelowna Secondary School from May 29 – 31. Applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 18 as of Dec. 31, 2015, and living in the Southern Interior (all areas of British Columbia east of Hope and south of 100 Mile House). While there is legislation to be passed at SIYP to facilitate the youth parliament movement, a large portion of the session revolves around private member ’s resolutions (PMRs). PMRs give members a chance to
bring up and debate issues affecting their community, the province, the country, or the world. Some PMRs from the seventh SIYP included resolutions in support of free post-secondary education in Canada, in support of reinstating the Bank of Canada as a Crown corporation, and in opposition to the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project. In hosting its eighth session this year, SIYP is proudly continuing the tradition originally started in July of 1988 with the Okanagan Youth Parliament. The Southern Interior Youth Parliament is part of a larger organization known as the British Columbia Youth Parliament. BCYP holds its session each year in Victoria for a week, while SIYP is an excellent opportunity for
many to improve their debate skills, learn more about parliament, and possibly move on to BCYP. The premier of SIYP, Sheridan Hawse, eagerly anticipates the weekend, adding, “SIYP has been an amazing opportunity for me to learn about parliamentary procedures. I also have had the chance to create lasting friendships. I urge anyone to join who may be interested, and to consider the amazing benefits SIYP brings to one’s political understanding in Canada.” For more information and the application form for the Southern Interior Youth Parliament, visit bcyp. org/siyp.html. For any questions regarding the youth parliament, contact the chair of SIYP at seamus.benwell@ bcyp.org or the chief returning officer at jacob.noseworthy@bcyp.org.

where Thomas and his horse wrangler ride over on horses and pack up the horses and ride back to camp. It’s mostly 10-day hunts, he says. He is very grateful for the patience and support of his wife Marlene since he is gone for about three months every year. “I’d like to thank her for keeping the home front going and having the patience every year,” said Thomas. “I also want to thank my dad, watching from above us, who introduced me to the adventure of the great outdoors.” Thomas no longer guides around the Kootenays. He said gets his fill guiding up north and when he returns to Grand Forks he just wants to hunt himself. “I hunt a lot—maybe too much,” he said. “But it’s what I love. I hope to be able to hunt and guide for many years yet and cherish every day I am able to climb that steep ridge with my lab beside me.”

McGibbon said the move two years ago from the Christian Centre into the MAAP building, which they share with Whispers of Hope thrift store and soup kitchen, has been verwy positive. “Being partnered with the community kitchen is a big advantage,” he said. “We share the same clientele, we share the same goals. We can work together. The community kitchen was able to open earlier than it normally does to accommodate the guys who come out of here at 8 a.m. The partnership works well.” The shelter is funded mainly by BC Housing but they also receive donations from a number of other sources. McGibbon said that most of the guests at the shelter are male. “It’s about 6-1 ratio of male to female,” he estimated. “We’ve had some youth. Not much, but some. The year before we had a couple of families in distress, whether it be vehicle problems in the night.” McGibbon said they get very few transient visitors. “Most were local and most were temporary due to situations beyond their control,” he said. “Most are here for a short time while they were waiting for a paycheque or that kind of thing. And then they were able to move on.” The facility benefits from having shower facilities and limited laundry. He said they don’t do counseling on-site but they have information, which they can give to clients about accessing resources. McGibbon added that they don’t turn anyone away as long as they are willing to comply with the rules. This year, for the first time, BETHS allowed pets inside

Learning together
After a year of planning, a small group of local volunteers are ready to take the next step in launching the Learning Garden outside the aquatic centre in Grand Forks. This Friday at 3 p.m. the public is invited to come out for the grand opening of this great project, which will see the group begin to build the soil for the garden. Who knows, they may even put you to work so you may want to bring your work boots. The major idea behind the Learning Garden is that participants get to take part in building up the garden and learn about different gardening methods at the same time. “It’s going to be lots of fun,” said Graham Watt, who is one of the primary volunteers with the project. “We’re really excited about involving the community and getting down to the fine scale of what plants are going to go in what bed.” Watt says the event on Friday will officially kick-off the project as well as have the first hands-on learning event. “We’re taking what’s essentially a gravel parking lot and A LITTLE turning it into a forest made of food over PERSPECTIVE the next several years,” he said. For residents in the community who are looking into having a garden or might be new at gardening and looking for different Another techniques, this is a great idea. my foot. It’s not that I don’t like the music or the sound of the human voice. But with my hearing loss I often catch only parts of a sentence, and that’s not helpful when trying to listen to a rock star being drowned out by the rest of the band. So I just learned to let the vocal become one with the melody and, if I liked it, then I was in my happy place. I never was much of one to buy the latest hit song either. In fact I went through a decade or two being totally oblivious to what the latest hits were. Ignorance does have an upside sometimes. I was able to almost totally avoid disco. In this age of computers and iTunes, you can pick from dozens of radio stations to listen to, each catering to your individual musical taste. When I discovered Internet radio I found one particular reggae station that played a lot
of stuff that I liked—including one song that would come up at least once an hour that I really, really liked. I figured things hadn’t changed much, that radio programming was still done around the top 10. But one day I decided to look up the lyrics of this song on the Internet. I’d written the title down as Give Me Hope Anna. But when I did, the Google search it came up as Gimme Hope Jo’anna. It turns out the song isn’t new at all—rather, it was a popular anti-apartheid anthem in the 1980s. Jo’anna being Johannesburg, the song calls for change to a system that allowed the white rulers to keep the majority black population of South Africa in virtual slavery. So maybe my weird listening habits allowed me to skip over disco but it also meant I was 30 years late in finding this beautiful song.

YouTube helped make up for it though. Gimme Hope Jo’anna can be viewed online in the many venues where it was performed; ranging in time from the 1980s up to it being performed in tribute to Nelson Mandela following his death in 2013. If ever you want to see the passion of musical performers come bursting to the fore then check out this song online. Fortunately for me, one version has the lyrics scroll along during the song. Eventually the international pressure the song called for helped bring an end to apartheid. I guess my take-away here is that even if you don’t understand what somebody is telling you, it’s probably best not to tune him or her out completely. You could miss some something beautiful, profound and possibly important.

to the editor
Canada Post needs to be sustainable Editor, The Gazette: I would like to respond to the letter to the editor, “Why take away postal positions?” Canada Post operates the largest retail network in the country with close to 6,300 outlets. Part of our ongoing transformation is to ensure that we continue to meet the changing needs of our customers through our physical retail network. In a world where time is precious, we continue to partner with local businesses to offer extended hours, ample parking and added convenience. Franchise operations offer the same products, services and prices as corporate post offices, and they cost less to operate. The greatest challenge to Canada Post’s financial sustainability is the continuing decline
of lettermail. In 2014, volumes of Transaction Mail, which includes mostly letters, bills and statements, fell by a further 5.2 per cent or 214 million pieces, compared to 2013. Compared to 2006, Domestic lettermail volumes fell by 1.4 billion pieces, or 28 per cent. Loss of Habitat is a loss to us all Editor, The Gazette: I am greatly disappointed by the way the new city council has dealt with Habitat for Humanity. The work they have accomplished here in Grand Forks has been a great benefit to many people, including Whispers of Hope and
BETHS. Through council’s decision, Habitat for Humanity has lost a lot of money and the city has lost an organization that cannot be replaced. It’s our loss. Eileen Doucette, Grand Forks
Opposition leader visits CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Official opposition leader John Horgan was in Grand Forks yesterday at Kocomo’s Coffee House where he met with residents and answered questions on a number of topics. Introducing Horgan to the group of about 20 was local supporter Darwin Benson. Joining Horgan, who is the provincial leader of the NDP party, was former NDP leader and finance spokesperson Carole James, and NDP candidate for MP for the South OkanaganWest Kootenay (currently known as Southern Interior) Dick Cannings. Horgan was in town as part of the BC Families Need a Break! Tour.

Sludge buildup needs attention The City of Grand Forks has a problem at its sewage treatment lagoons that needs attention. Sludge has built up in the large lagoon over Rousing many years to the point that it is the Rabble now above the water line. It must be ROY RONAGHAN removed if the lagoon is to function efficiently. The question is: How and at what cost? Sludge buildup in sewage lagoons occurs unless the concentration of enzymes is sufficient to turn the waste into water. Every Canadian community with a wastewater system that operates lagoons like those that serve Grand Forks will eventually have to dispose of sludge. The very existence of the sludge is an indication that the system is not functioning at full efficiency. More effluent is entering the ponds than the existing enzymes can digest. If the lagoons are to be restored to full operating capacity the sludge must be removed. The removal can either be done mechanically with an excavator or by natural means using an organic procedure. City council and staff must decide soon on which method to use. Wastewater from households, industrial operations and the storm water system enters the sewage lagoons as a toxic mix of human waste, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals and solids. When storm water from streets and roads is added to the mix becomes a potent product that should not be disposed of in a landfill or on agricultural land because the toxic materials could leach into the groundwater. Over a couple decades, enzymes in the lagoons have digested the sludge through a process called anaerobic digestion. Bacteria consume the organic matter and break it into water and carbon dioxide. The process does not require oxygen. Grand Forks city staff and council have been seeking a solution for handling the sludge and they have asked Urban Systems, a company based in Kelowna, to recommend a solution with costs. (Urban Systems has been retained by the city for a number of years to provide engineering expertise on infrastructure issues.) In the fall of 2014, an engineer from Urban Systems addressed city council about the removal of the sludge from the largest of the sewage lagoons. He suggested that the material be removed, left to dry on site for a period of time and then be trucked to a suitable site where it would be spread as fertilizer. At the time, land adjacent to the airstrip was being considered as the disposal site. The dried sludge cannot be disposed of at the RDKB landfill on Granby Road because of the toxins it contains. A cost effective method for the removal of the sludge that has been proven to be effective in communities around the world is available to the city. However, because it is an organic approach, there is skepticism that it will not remove the sludge. Measured quantities of enzymes that thrive on the organic material in the sewage can be added to lagoons on a regular schedule and in the right concentrations they will digest the solid material that can eventually become a source of odours and pollution. The use of enzymes to digest sludge is a cost effective way of maintaining healthy sewage lagoons and there is no residue to take care of. Adding the right bacteria in proper proportions to the pond environment enhances the natural performance of the lagoons and that is the goal. If the City of Grand Forks is going to meet government standards for the release of water from its lagoons into the Kettle River, it must clean up the system soon. Should the more cost effective natural method be tried? Why not? There is nothing to lose in doing so.

tency by moving the entire river to catch and release (for rainbow trout). It simplifies the regulations.” White said the new rules actually came into being partly due to pressure from user groups/stakeholders such as fishing associations. “We’ve had a lot of pressure from them to move towards this type of regulation,” she said. “We’ve spend the last three to five years doing consultation with fishing and hunting clubs, the public, local stakeholders in the area and they’re very supportive of this.” The new regulations allow for the harvest of non-native species such as brook trout, as well as brown trout and white fish. White said the ministry is hoping to be able to hire a university student for a river guardian position where they would help enforce the regulations as well as monitor the results. “We’ll have presence on the river to conduct surveys and collect information including fish size, catch information, angler satisfaction with the new regulations, effort, those kinds of things so we can get some direct angler feedback on the quality of the fishery,” said White. The new edition of the Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis is available at: www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/. There are some big changes coming this year for local angers with the new Freshwater Fishing Regulations coming out including a move to catch and release for rainbow trout on major local rivers. The 2015-17 Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis is available now online, and will soon be available in hard copy at Service BC centres and local angling licence vendors throughout the area. The Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis is published every two years, and contains all non-salmon sport fishing regulations in effect in freshwater in B.C. The new regulations come into effect on April 1 and include several changes governing fishing in the Grand Forks area. “The regulation changes for 2015 will include movement to catch and release of rainbow trout on the West Kettle, Kettle and Granby Rivers,” said Tara White, senior fisheries biologist, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Thompson-Okanagan region. “The other change will be an implementation of an in-season closure during late summer around the August period.” White said the in-season closure will allow for protection of wild stocks during the low flow, high temperature periods, and to maintain the quality of the fishery.
The fishing ban will be: Kettle River July 25 - Aug. 25 and West Kettle River Aug. 1 - 31. White said the goal of the regulations is to maintain a quality fishery and optimize fishing opportunities while protecting stocks so they’re available for future generations. “From a stock conservation perspective—the Kettle River is managed as a quality fishery. It’s the only flyfishing system in region 8 (Okanagan to Christina Lake). It provides one of the few river-fishing opportunities in the Okanagan region.” White said the quality of the river fishery has deteriorated over the past few decades as a result of low abundance and small sizes of trout. “Issues such as water/land practices, available habitat, overfishing and environmental conditions have basically limited the trout numbers,” she added. White said that adding to the problem is a significant lack of compliance with existing fishing regulations and infrequent enforcement practice. “We want to help try to reinforce the regulations and maintain the quality of the fishery,” she said. “By changing the regulations it provides consistency. There are a lot of people that come in from out of town to fish there. The way the regulations were before it was by specific landmarks, which made it very difficult for people to understand where the boundaries are. This provides consis-

the opportunity to take a stand against violence.” This year, the priority focus for civil forfeiture grants is on initiatives that address violence against women, and support the Violence Free BC strategy. Other areas where funding was made available included serving victims through restorative justice, community and youth crime prevention, and police education, training and specialized crime prevention equipment. Since the civil forfeiture program became active, it has returned more than $16 million from successful forfeiture actions to crime prevention grants and victim compensation payments in B.C.

Funding from the province’s civil forfeiture program will be going towards the Boundary Women’s Coalition for its Youth Crime Prevention program. “Reducing instances of sexual exploitation and providing support for victims is a critically important service,” Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson said. “By providing these services, the Boundary Women’s Coalition is helping to create a safe community for our youth to grow up and thrive.” A grant of $20,000 will support youth aged 13 to 18 who may be or are at risk
of being sexually exploited. This project will use a multi-agency approach utilizing RCMP Victim Services, the Boundary Women’s Transition House and a variety of other community agencies in partnership with the Children of the Streets Society to address and prevent drug-facilitated sexual assaults. “This funding supports bringing youth at risk of being sexually exploited together to learn how to take care of themselves and others,” said Connie Marchal, executive director, Boundary Women’s Transition House. “This will give them a united voice so they can prevent future violence, and it provides our whole community with

Author and broadcaster Mark Forsythe and journalist Greg Dickson will be on tour in the Kootenays giving presentations about their most recent book, From the West Coast to the Western Front: British Columbians and the Great War. They will be at the Grand Forks and District Public Library on Thursday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. It has often been observed that the First World War jolted Canada into nationhood, and as Forsythe and Dickson show in this compelling book, no province participated more eagerly in that transformation or felt the aftershock more harshly than British Columbia. In From the West Coast to the Western Front, Forsythe, host of CBC Radio’s midday show BC Almanac, marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War by teaming with historian Dickson and the ever resourceful B.C. Almanac audience to compile a sweeping portrayal of that crucial chapter of B.C. history. Of the 611,000 Canadians who fought for King and Country, 55,570 were from British Columbia—the highest per capita rate of enlistment in the country. Of that contingent, 6,225 died in battle, a critical loss to a fledgling province of barely 400,000. Compiling stories, artifacts and photos sent in by B.C. Almanac listeners from across the province, this
volume tells of submarine smuggling, bagpipes lost on the battlefield and of the ongoing struggles by soldiers who made it home. It tells of battles that set records for mass death amid conditions of unequalled squalor, but also of the heroism of front-line nurses and soldiers like George Maclean, a First Nations man from the Okanagan, who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Devastating, harrowing, insightful and miraculous, these stories reveal much about the spirit and resilience of a people who survived one of history’s greatest disasters to build the province we have today. Forsythe was the long-standing host of CBC Radio One’s B.C. Almanac. Raised in Toronto, Forsythe moved to B.C. in the mid-seventies and has come to know the province well through broadcasting assignments in Smithers, Prince George, Prince Rupert, the Okanagan and Vancouver. Dickson was a journalist and producer at CBC radio and television for over 20 years. He also taught journalism at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Forsythe and Dickson’s other books include The B.C. Almanac Book of Greatest British Columbians and The Trail of 1858. This free event is made possible with the assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts. For more information about the book or the event, go to www.harbourpublishing.com.

Volunteers establish innovative garden
Imagine engaging the entire community in a handson, experimental and educational public learning garden. That was the vision of a local group of volunteers who’ve been collaborating on the design of such a garden for the past year. The seed for this exciting vision was planted in late 2013 when John Mackey, then director of recreation and facilities, offered some funding toward the idea of a creative landscaping project for beautifying the desolate, hard-packed landscape surrounding the aquatic centre. Inspired and originated by the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society community forums, this small group of volunteers has worked tirelessly to bring their vision to reality. Planting the ideas, nursing the tender shoots of design, delicately tending the growing vision, weeding the values, fertilizing the growing community collaboration and finally experiencing the harvest of some amazing support from the local corporate community—the grand opening has now arrived. All ages and all abilities will find something of interest as they view the future plans of this comprehensive vision: from solar electric to herb spirals, from accessible, raised-bed gardens to beekeeping, from sheet mulching techniques to water-wise gardening methods, this will be a multi-function, hands-on, educational facility for the total community. The opening ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m. this Friday, April 10. The Learning Garden is located in the vacant space between the aquatic centre, the skate park and 72nd Avenue, with lots of visitor parking beside the arena. This will be an opportunity for the group to introduce the community to the values, goals and mission of this exciting and inclusive project of permaculture and sustainability. Everyone is invited ...and they mean everyone. Attendees are encouraged to wear casual, outdoor clothing and to bring along a pair of garden gloves—just in case you’re enticed into the various activities including mulching demos, children’s games, garden outline tours and dancing to the live music. The group is very excited to unveil this project to the community and welcome one and all to celebrate with them.
The Learning Garden group would like to express its deep and sincere appreciations to the generous sponsors named below who have so graciously supported this community project:
Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society Grand Forks Recreation Commission Mayor and Council, City Of Grand Forks Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Grand Forks Credit Union School District 51 (Boundary) Selkirk College WildSafeBC

How can choristers keep from singing?
Dine and dance at the Lake BRENDA AUGÉ & LYNN YESKE Submitted to the Gazette

Submitted to the Gazette
The Grand Forks Choral Society and its junior choir are busy practicing for their upcoming concert, “How Can I Keep from Singing?” Two performances will be held in the GFSS auditorium: the first on Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m., and the second on Sunday at 2 p.m. If you look in this week’s Gazette, you will find a chance to win tickets to the Best Seats in the House. Fill it in, drop it off at the Gazette, or the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre by Friday, April 14. Director Kirsten Nicolson said, “It has been a great season so far and I am really looking forward to the concert! The repertoire for the Grand Forks Choral Society (GFCS) this season has really challenged the choir, and me as the director, to focus on the emotions behind the music we are singing instead of just worrying about singing the right notes. “When I think of the name of our
concert, ‘How Can I Keep From Singing,’ I think of all the places in my life where I have felt the need to burst into song—from the enthusiastic songs of happy, joy-filled moments to wordless cries of lament in darker times, music is such a powerful way to express our emotions. “Hopefully our audience will have the opportunity to travel through their own moments of overwhelming emotion as they listen to songs from a wide variety of cultures and times during the concert.” The junior choir has 22 choristers this term, Nicolson added. “They are always delightful. They have certainly kept me on my toes— their enthusiasm for doing things out of the ordinary (like choreographing a dance section in the middle of one song) has pushed me to choose a wider variety of repertoire for them to try this term. “You only have to see these delightful people in action for a moment to understand the feeling of “How Can I Keep from Singing.”

Spring is in the air! The snow has melted, green blades of grass are popping up, robins are chirping, winter clothes are put away and sandals pulled out, yard work has begun …. and the Spring Spaghetti Dinner and Dance is on the calendar at the community hall. This is the event that truly turns the corner for Christina Lake residents—an exhilarating get-together, an opportunity to reconnect with the southern travellers and summer lake people, and a chance to kick up our heels to John Vere’s music. What fun! Did you know the spring and fall spaghetti dinner and dance events have been happening forever? Did you know these events are two of the Christina Lake Community Association’s main fundraisers to keep the hall in great condition, serving the needs of the community? Here are a few stats: Over the last three years, our average operating expenses at the hall including insurance, repairs and maintenance, security, utilities and professional fees has been about $33,000 per year or about $3,000 per month. This does not include event expenses. Our expenses are covered through fundraising, donations, hall and kitchen rental, office rental, grants and programs. About $11,000 is raised through event
fundraising with at least half of that coming from the spaghetti dinners and their bar sales. Isn’t this impressive! So the community is part of the life source of the hall. A common conversation is increasing costs. The auxiliary to the community hall has noted the increase in supplies for their fantastic spread and we would like to share this increase with the community. The heart of the auxiliary puts in uncountable hours to prepare the sauce and meatballs, ready the salad and dessert, and set up for a festive event… we can never pay them in wages. The community association is finding it necessary to raise the cost of the spring and fall dinner/dance tickets to $20 each. The last increase, a jump of $1, occurred about six years ago! When you purchase a ticket for $20, realize that half of that (about $10) does cover the cost of supplies for the event, about $2.50 per person covers our music, then $7.50 per person is your contribution to providing and maintaining a fantastic community hall in Christina Lake. You’ll see the sign on the message board: “Christina Lake Community Association thanks YOU!” Enjoy your evening at the Spring Fling, Spaghetti Dinner and Dance at the hall on April 25.

Starchuk takes first at Muscle Classic CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Grand Forks is known for many things: sunshine, borscht, rivers and, if things continue, bodybuilding. Elyssa Starchuk is the latest female bodybuilder from Grand Forks to do well on a large stage. Starchuk, like Sharona Witwicki and Nancy Clark before her, finished strongly at a competition on the coast recently. In fact, Starchuk finished first in her category (physique) at the Leigh Brandt Muscle Classic in New Westminster on March 14. She also picked up an award for Best Poser. “I was pretty surprised,” she said. “It was my first competition. I didn’t really expect anything. I was hoping to win but you just never know what the judges are looking for. That’s what it boils down to. All these girls have put in their best effort and it’s up to the judges after that.” Starchuk, who has lived in Grand Forks her whole life, said she decided to enter the competition as a way of pushing herself. “I always stay in a little box—you know, your comfortable little box,” she said. “I wanted to totally challenge myself. I wanted to go way outside my comfort zone and do something that really made me feel alive.” Starchuk started working out around 13 years ago and has always enjoyed it. “I just fell in love with it the first day I went,” she said. “I get such an adrenaline rush out of it. It’s a social thing for me (being at the gym). I just felt really good about something.” About a year ago she decided she wanted to train for a major competition. “I just started to get serious a few years ago,” she said. “I decided to do a show. I then started to prepare for the show in November 2013.”
Bodybuilding competitions are split into five different classes: bikini, fitness, figure, physique and bodybuilding. She said that bodybuilding is for the most muscular ladies, followed by physique and on down to bikini. Starchuk competed in the open category, which is open to ladies of all ages, in the physique division. Starchuk said the training wasn’t too bad but the dieting and cutting (body fat) were tough. “For the most part it’s pretty good,” she said. “You’ve got 19 weeks of a cutting diet, which is pretty difficult. It involves a lot of cardio, it’s a very strict diet; everything is weighed and measured. It’s definitely challenging.” Starchuk said the no-carb days were tough during the few weeks where she ate nothing but chicken and only green vegetables. “Then I would have a low-carb day with a little bit of rice, maybe some oatmeal,” she said. “It’s quite a calorie deficit you’re in.” Starchuk said she was doing cardio for 80 minutes per day with workouts of an hour or hour and a half per day. “It’s just insane,” she said. “You know it’s only for a certain time frame. She said everyone in town has been very supportive of her. “I’ve been downtown off and on all week and I’ve had people I hardly know come up and congratulate me and hug me,” she said. “I’ve had just overwhelming support which you just don’t get in a bigger centre.” Starchuk said she plans to train for a year and prepare for the 2016 provincial competition, which she is now eligible for. Starchuk has lofty goals for her run at provincials. “I want to win it!” she said. “I’ll do provincials and see how I place there and if I do well I’ll go to nationals.”

Dergousoff off to Pan Am Games CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
A local swimmer has qualified for the 2015 Pan Am Games in the 200M breast stroke after winning in the finals by two 100ths of a second with a winning time of 2:13:11. James Dergousoff, who lives part-time at Christina Lake, will now participate in the 2015 Pan Am Games, which take place July 10-26 in Toronto. “It feels amazing especially getting a best time in the trials here,” said Dergousoff in an interview after the race. Dergousoff came from behind in the final race to overtake Edmonton’s Richard Funk in the last few metres. “Me and Pat (coach Patrick Paradis) have worked on that
for years,” said the 18-yearold. “We’ve just been practicing holding back speed which is most important in the 200M breast.” Dergousoff qualified for the finals by finishing first in his heat with a seed time of 2:14:45. He also qualified in the 100M breast stroke and the 200 individual medley (IM). Dergousoff trains in North Vancouver for the CHENA North Shore Swim Club with coach Paradis. He started his swimming career with the Grand Forks Piranhas Swim Club. His former coaches include Matt Grey and Cora Ludwar of Grand Forks. The Pan Am (short for Pan American) Games are the world’s third largest international multi-sport games. The

Rocker Reynolds Marge Bekker was also part of that team. Marge, along with her team-mates Jack and Phyllis Acres (Acres Drugs) and ‘Rocker’ Ted Reynolds won the A event in that inaugural Rocker Reynolds Bonspiel. Marge was gracious in helping the bonspiel committee by presenting the coveted Trophies to the A, B and C event winners. By chance, all of the final games in the three events were a match of an outof-town team against a local hometown team, with the home-town teams winning the A and C events. The A event winners, the Gagne team of Dalton Gagne, Carol Large, Doug Noren and Rae Salkeld, defeated the John Egyed team from Penticton. The B event winners, the Blashko team from Summerland, consisting of Tony and Lil Blashko, and Clem and Marinne Beaulac, defeated the Mel Lungle team. The C event winners, the Ludwar team of Kelly Ludwar, Kevin Dowkes, Stacy Schwab and Bob Vanderbyl, defeated the Barry Marsh team from Nelson. The Jen Semenoff team from Oliver had the dubious distinction of being the first team out and winning the Archie Daigle trophy. Congratulation to all, and you are invited back for the 75th diamond celebration in 2040!

In last week’s article on the Grand Forks Figure Skating Club, Roxanne Shepherd’s name was misspelled. We apologize for the error.
Boating season has arrived and if you z GFREC have a watercraft you need to prepare before you launch. Be proactive in your planReport ning so your first time out on the water will be a safe and enjoyable experience. Inspecting the mechanics and structure of your vessel is important. Make sure the GRAND FORKS windows and mirrors are clear of dust and RECREATION dirt. Anything left sitting for a length of time is subject to disrepair. Do you have all of the onboard equipment required by law for your vessel? Inventory your safety supplies. Inspect your lifejackets for damage and replace them if needed. You must have a proper fitting lifejacket for everyone on board. If you require information on the safety equipment required on board your vessel go to www.tc.gc.ca the Transport Canada website and download the Safe Boating Guide. And if you do not have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCO) and you plan on piloting a motorized boat or personal watercraft, you must get one. It is the law. Federal regulations require all Canadian recreational boaters to have a PCO card to drive a boat powered by a motor. There are several ways to obtaining a PCO card. Online sites offer tutorial and test packages. Grand Forks Recreation also has available a BOAT manual to study at your own pace and when you feel prepared can write the exam at our office. Upon scoring 75 per cent or better on a written test of basic boating safety, you will walk away with a temporary PCO card. If you have a family outing planned and you aren’t equipped with enough lifejackets for everyone, or you need an infant lifejacket for a day out on the lake, GFREC can help. We offer a free lifejacket loan program. There are a variety of sizes available from infant to adult XXL. Call or come by the office Monday to Friday and pick up what you need for your weekend getaway. For more information on getting your PCO card and on our lifejacket loan program give GFREC a call at 250-442-2202. Happy boating!

Lifestyle changes can reduce risk
SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
It’s never too late to make lifestyle changes to promote brain health. “What is good for your heart is good for your brain,” says Julie Leffelaar, regional education and support coordinator for the nonprofit Alzheimer Society of B.C. for Grand Forks and the West Kootenays. Better control and detection for hypertension and diabetes, as well as measures to encourage smoking cessation and to reduce cardiovascular risk, have the potential to reduce the risk of dementia. The society is doing its part by offering a variety of programs and services for local residents. A support and information group, for example, serves as a forum for sharing practical tips and strategies for coping with the disease. It helps create support and friendship with others whose lives are affected by dementia. For information on the Grand Forks group contact Franni Carmen at 250-442-5320, or Julie Leffelaar toll-free at 1-855-301-6742 or jleffelaar@alzheimerbc.org, and visit www.alzheimerbc.org.
Amanda Louise Koppin It is with great sadness that the family of Amanda Louise Koppin, 33, of Christina Lake announces her sudden passing on March 26, 2015. The love of her life, husband Ben and the brightest light in her sky, Caleb age 2, share their immense grief with mom and best friend, Susan Harrison and caring stepfather Ted Harrison; stepbrothers Chris (Jenn) and Oliver Harrison (Sheena Archer). Grieving also are father Jim O’Connor and wife Karen as well as stepbrothers Rick (Nikki), Mike (Sarah) and Dan (Jenn) Johnson and also her birth son Daniel Shaw. Amanda was very close and fond of her grandmother, Musa O’Connor, who recently passed away. Raised in the caring community of Fife at Christina Lake, a background that set in motion the lovely person Amanda became; an awesome competitive mountain biker, skier, and later a fine nurse. Her early ski training was through the Nancy Greene programme at Rossland. Later she served as a respected member of the Kicking Horse Resort Ski Patrol and in the summer she developed their downhill biking programme. After a knee injury, she moved to Fernie to enrol in the Licensed Practical Nurse programme where she met her true love, Ben. Following graduation and marriage, Amanda worked in both the Trail and Nelson Hospitals, before starting at Hardy View Lodge in Grand Forks and moving back home to Christina Lake. She was loved and respected by staff and patients alike because of her dedication, compassion and bright spirit. Being a supportive and loving wife to Ben and a wonderful mother, watching their Caleb grow, was the highlight of her life. “ Family time”, dancing, music, adventuring, and helping her family and friends flourish, created a joy for her which easily spread to others. Amanda squeezed every minute out of life to care and nurture and show guidance to all. Almost moment by moment, through her kind and thoughtful manner, she fashioned special memories for all around her and the people she loved. Amanda’s infectious smile could light up a room, and her encounters with friends, new and old, were some of the best moments of her day. She had an intuitive sensibility that endeared her to all and displayed wisdom beyond her years. She will be enormously missed.
