The Lake Bloomers Club will be hosting guest speaker Gord Hutchings later this month for a presentation called “The Coevolution of Flowering Plants and Native Bees,” which focuses on the dwindling native bee population and the dire effects their absence could bring. Hutchings, an entomologist

at the University of Victoria, has spent the last 25 years studying and educating about bees and dragonflies across western Canada. “I started looking into the subject at the request of some members,” Lake Bloomers president Cara Smith said. “We have members do questionnaires every year about what sort of guests they would like to have come speak to the club, and

Susan Simmons and Alex Cape, two of Vancouver Island’s most prolific swimmers, have set their sights on Cowichan Lake, and are looking to locals to provide some inspiration. Simmons, a 50-year-old data services manager, and Cape, a 35-year-old military paramedic, have already made a name for themselves through their aquatic feats, including a 70 km swim on Cowichan Lake last August, which took them from Lakeview Park to Heather Campsite and back. The swim took them 33 hours to complete, and they managed to raise $5,000 for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Now the duo is returning to the lake to rise to an even bigger challenge. Their new course will take them from Lakeview Park to Heather Campsite, back to Lakeview Park, to the northeast arm of the lake near Youbou, then back to Lakeview Park. The more than 105-km swim is expected to take 50

hours, and if completed, will replace the current world record for distance swam in flat water. The current record was achieved by fellow Canadian swimmer Vicki Keith, who swam a 104-km double crossing of Lake Ontario in 1987. Keith completed her swim in 56 hours and 10 minutes. In preparation for their record-breaking attempt, Simmons and Cape are asking people to declare their own “105s” on their website (www.whatsyour105.com) which they say will be used for inspiration along the way. As of Monday (April 6), 42 people have posted their own 105s, which are viewable on the website. The pledges range from swimming 105 lengths to cycling 105 km to doing 105 “chakra balances.” Simmons and Cape are scheduled to start the swim July 31 and complete their Photo courtesy swimmerslastlonger.com route on August 2. Susan Simmons and Alex Cape completed a 70 km swim on Cowichan For more information, visit www.swimmerslastlonger.com. Second community kitchen planned for Lake Cowichan Cowichan Community Kitchens: Group incorporates health, budgeting and shopping into programs Lake CowiChan Gazette

For the past 20 years, Cowichan Community Kitchens has been providing financial, health and cooking education to low-income residents across the Cowichan Valley. Now the nonprofit group is looking to expand operations in Lake Cowichan, with plans for a second community kitchen in town already in motion. The group currently runs three kitchens, as well as a portable cob

oven, in the Cowichan Valley. The local kitchen is located in Centennial Hall in Lake Cowichan, with two other locations in Duncan and Cobble Hill. With the community kitchen in Honeymoon Bay Hall no longer running, Cowichan Community Kitchens is hoping they can operate another kitchen out of Centennial Hall. “With the kitchen in Honeymoon Bay folded, there’s definitely a need for another location right now,”

spokesperson Lori Iannidinardo said. The new kitchen, Iannidinardo explained, would be run in partnership with Island Health, giving the program a boost in expertise. Though Cowichan Community Kitchens is a not-for-profit group, they still pay their facilitators, which Iannidinardo said can make things challenging when donations are low. She said the group also receives donations from local farmers and

Liquor price changes small so far B.C. Views: System designed to create a level playing field for retailers, while maintaining government revenue, says Justice Minister Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS

Some producers are raising prices slightly and others are offering short-term discounts as B.C.’s new liquor price wholesale model took effect Wednesday. Pre-tax retail price changes at B.C. government stores show little change for the most popular brands of beer, hard liquor and other alcoholic beverages. Government store shoppers will see lower prices on the shelves, because as of April 1, government stores add provincial and federal sales tax at the cash register. Of the top 10 brands of spirits, a 750 ml bottle of Crown Royal whiskey retails for $23.49, a two-cent increase, plus taxes. For the larger bottle of Crown Royal, government stores are reducing the price by $1.98 for the month of April. A six-pack of Lonetree cider goes up 90 cents to $9.59 as a discount price for March ends. For larger cans of imported Strongbow cider, an April sale price is reduced $1.14 to $17.99. For beer, a dozen Sleeman Honey Brown Lager increases six cents to $20.49. For private retailers, Saveon-Foods store in Surrey was the first to take advantage of new regulations allowing sale of B.C. wines directly from grocery shelves. Supermarkets now have the option of

including a liquor store with separate checkout for alcohol purchases. The government store retail price used to be the benchmark for B.C. sales, with discounts off that price to private liquor stores, agency and B.C. wine stores. Now all retailers pay the same wholesale price to the Liquor Distribution Branch, which retains its wholesale monopoly. The LDB wholesale markup is now 124 per cent of the supplier price for hard liquor, 73 per cent for coolers and ciders, 89 per cent for wine and a per-litre tax with ascending rates for small, medium and large breweries. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton says the system is designed to create a level playing field for retailers, while maintaining the government’s revenue of $1 billion a year from the wholesale markup. Many government liquor stores have added refrigerators and Sunday opening hours, to make up for the loss of their wholesale discount compared to what private stores were paying. Of 196 government liquor stores, 169 have extended their operating hours, and 153 were open on Good Friday. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Lake Cowichan makes curlers feel at home Dear editor,

We had the pleasure of visiting your town for the provincial juvenile curling championships. I just wanted to say how welcome the whole community made us feel. The people were so nice and friendly and I will come back again for a holiday. My daughter went for a walk with her teammates and came back with a huge smile saying “mom, I love this place, it’s beautiful and I feel like I am at home.” We also come from a small community so we did feel right at

home. We visited a few of the stores and I can honestly say I had the best customer service anyone could ask for. A huge thank you to everyone who helped organize and run the championships as well. We are proud to be taking home the bronze medal for the girls. Thank you to everyone again for making this a trip our girls will never forget. —Sandra, James and Winter Harvey Lumby, British Columbia

Residents of Lake Cowichan may be wondering what’s going on with all the fish habitat signs being installed around town and in the surrounding areas. Well, wonder no more as the Cowichan Lake & River Stewardship Society (CLRSS) has undertaken a public awareness campaign to identify all important road crossings of critical salmon and trout streams around Cowichan Lake. The signage project has been underway for the last five years and there are now a total of 40 24” x 30” fish habitat signs installed to date with the name of the creek or river noted on the sign. 10 signs are in the Town of Lake Cowichan municipal boundaries, 19 signs are in CVRD Area I and 11 signs are in CVRD Area F. The signage project started in 2011 with George deLure, Bill Gibson and the late Gerald Thom installing five signs at Beadnell Creek, Beaver Creek, Cottonwood Creek, Meade Creek and Sutton Creek road crossings. In 2012, six additional signs were installed, along with

seven more signs in 2013, 11 in 2014 and 11 more so far in 2015 for a total of 40 to date. Other CLRSS volunteers have stepped in to help with installations, with the recent installations being done by a crew of four volunteers: Rob Somers, Gord Davidson, George deLure and Bill Gibson. Although seemingly simple, much effort goes into installing the fish habitat signs. Activities such as getting willing volunteers, obtaining funding, selecting streams for signage, obtaining permission for signs on private logging roads, obtaining a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure permit for signs on public roads, ordering and getting material, preparation of material and equipment for installation, installation of signs by volunteers, documenting installations and completing a final report for funding provided by the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Each sign represents an investment of $750 by CLRSS for labour and material. Funding

in the past has been provided by the Pacific Salmon Foundation (which is also funded by TimberWest), the CVRD, the Town of Lake Cowichan, CLRSS, private funding by Maureen Quested and material donations from Irly Bird in Lake Cowichan. There is an ongoing need to continue this public awareness project as fish are one of our most precious resource and it is up to all citizens to do our part to help protect and maintain this resource for future generations. If readers have an important fish bearing stream that crosses a road in the Cowichan Lake area that needs a sign, visit www. cowichan-lake-stewards.ca to state your case for a sign and give a contact person so that CLRSS can one day identify your creek as an important stream for protection. Local biologist Ted Burns has often stated that Cowichan Lake deserves the title of “Salmon Capital of the World.” —Submitted by Bill Gibson

Fukushima: First instance of radiation since tsunami four years ago The Canadian Press

Radiation from the leaking Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan has been detected on the shores of Vancouver Island. Scientists say it’s the first time since a tsunami in Japan four years ago that radiation has been found on the shorelines of North America. Low levels of the radioactive isotope Cesium-134 were

collected last February in waters off a dock at Ucluelet, B.C., about 315 kilometres west of Victoria. University of Victoria chemical oceanographer Jay Cullen says that amount of radiation is minuscule and does not pose risks to human health or the ocean ecosystem. He says the radiation measurements found off

Ucluelet are more than 1,000 times lower than Canadian drinking water standards for radiation levels. Scientists and citizen volunteers have been collecting water samples at more than 60 sites along the Canadian and U.S. west coasts and in Hawaii over the past 15 months looking for traces of radioactive isotopes from Japan.

Sailings of the B.C. Ferry M.V. Queen of Oak Bay were cancelled after a man went overboard Monday. The incident happened at about 4:15 p.m. as the ferry was sailing southeast of Bowen Island on its 3 p.m. run from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay. A passenger aboard the ferry witnessed the victim going overboard from the main car deck, said Darin Gunette, B.C. Ferries spokesman. The crew of the Queen of Oak Bay launched its rescue boat, managed to recover the victim and transfer him to a Vancouver Police Department marine unit boat that responded to the scene.

The M.V. Queen of Cowichan, on route to Horseshoe Bay from Nanaimo, also assisted in the search. The crew of a Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft provided medical attention to the victim aboard the police craft, which rushed him to an ambulance in Horseshoe Bay, according to the Canadian Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria. The victim, 45, had been in the water nearly 30 minutes and died in hospital Tuesday. The Queen of Oak Bay’s 3 p.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure was already delayed nearly 50 minutes because of a vehicle stalled on its car deck. The ship’s remaining 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. sailings were cancelled.

“It’s the request of the police when they’re doing an investigation into something like this,” Gunette said. “The vessel stays put until they’ve checked everything they have to check.” Gunette went on to say the cancelled sailings caused little in the way of traffic delays and customers were given the option of boarding sailings from Duke Point to Tsawwassen. “We didn’t see any severe overloads or anything like that,” Gunette said. “Customers are understanding in an issue like this, for sure.” Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the name of the victim will not be released and the investigation had been turned over to the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

Island Health urging for restrictions on ‘e-cigs’ Local regulation: No bylaws regarding the devices currently exist in Lake Cowichan Drew McLachlan

Lake CowiChan Gazette

The provincial government recently introduced new legislation aimed at restricting the use of electronic cigarettes, commonly referred to as e-cigs, this month. Some municipalities, like Vancouver, have followed suit, enacting new bylaws that restrict the use of the controversial devices in public, treating them

as cigarettes. While Island Health has been urging some local governments to enact similar bylaws, Lake Cowichan’s current tobacco bylaws include no restrictions on e-cigs or vapourizing. While “vaping” is not yet restricted by the town, e-cig users still must abide by provincial legislation, which bans vaping on public and private school grounds, as well as indoor public spaces and workplaces. The new

legislation also prohibits vendors from selling to minors, regardless of the nicotine content of the product. Dr. Paul Hasselback, medical health officer for Island Health, pointed out that the new legislation is not completely thorough, as it doesn’t include vaping at bus stops, parks or playgrounds. While e-cig advocates point to the devices as being safer than conventional cigarettes, and an easy method of quitting smoking,

Hasselback said the devices also work as a gateway and set a bad example for youth. He said it would “make sense” for e-cigs to be treated the same as tobacco, and that Island Health could make a formal request within the next two years. Hasselback recently spoke to the City of Nanaimo regarding bylaws, though Lake Cowichan Mayor Ross Forrest said the health authority has yet to make a pitch to Lake Cowichan.

“We haven’t had this discussion yet, but it’s definitely going to be something we will be addressing,” Forrest said. “To be honest, I don’t know a lot about the subject. It’s something the town council and I will have to learn more about before amending any bylaws.” Lake Cowichan got its first taste of vapour last January when Denise Allan, owner of The Depot, began selling nicotine-free products at her store.

Easter egg hunt at Centennial Park

Photos Malcolm Chalmers

It was one of the largest turnouts in years for the annual Easter egg hunt at Centennial Park on Monday afternoon (April 6). Approximately 60 kids scurried around cleaning the baseball field of its chocolate eggs. Left: Francis Clayton, dressed in her Easter Bunny outfit, with her dad Aaron and mom Mira at Centennial Park. Right: Olivia Youmans (left) and Kendra Walker showing off their baskets, which were later filled with chocolate eggs.

TIP?

Big power may be back but not to worry, the environmentally minded cars were never far from sight. The Vancouver show was chosen to announce the new Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Green Car of the Year Award. This year’s winner is the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle, providing a practical design with full electric capabilities. Also on display was the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell vehicle, capable of running on hydrogen, with no tailpipe emission, only water vapour. The hottest trend in the market today is the small crossover vehicles that come in many shapes and sizes, and from all over the world. The Fiat 500X is an example of the latest from Europe, allowing a young family practical, thrifty transportation in a stylish Italian design. Built on the same platform as the new Jeep Renegade, the 500X has more panache and curb appeal. The 2015 Vancouver uver International Auto Show marked the 95th year of this annual event and it was the biggest ggest and boldest yet.

Kelowna resident Rick Kelly thinks Tesla has missed the boat with its Model S design, so he’s created his own sporty coupe version of the electric car. Well, actually, the car-loving artist has created a digital version of what he calls a Model S 2+2-coupe concept. Kelly explained: “The only ‘sporty’ electric vehicle on the market right now is the BMW i8 – I’ve seen one here in Kelowna and it is spectacular, albeit out of most people’s price range ($145,000). Tesla has the performance in its electric Model S to be entertaining as a driver’s car. The Model S is one of the nicestlooking cars on the road, but it has FOUR doors – that precludes it from being ‘sporty’ in my book.” You can check out Kelly’s other creations at his website: http://automotiveart.shawwebspace.ca, his blog at http://digital-automotive-art.blogspot.ca and he even has a fun iBook called Digital Automotive Art on iTunes. Check it out. What do you think about Kelly’s digital re-creation of the $114,700 Tesla?

Admission is free and the film starts at 7 p.m. A $1 concession will also be open.

LCS will be hosting a health fair on April 16, designed to inform students and the community about health issues and opportunities in the area.
