Artwork attracts what’s happening and curious about the gallery,” said Kennedy Grant. “A lot of them are first time people to the gallery. They’re not just rushing through. They’re taking a solid look at the art.” Beyond the art itself, another topic continues to surface — the lack of a new, purpose-built public art gallery in Greater Vernon. “A lot of people are frustrated,” said Kennedy Grant. VPAG has been lobbying for a new facility for a number of years but the process has stalled at the political level. The satellite space consists of four storage containers sitting on the site selected for a new gallery. Kennedy Grant says the number of people making their way to that property indicates that a new facility must be in a high-profile

An international art exhibition is drawing in the crowds. The Okanagan Print Triennial has proven popular with local residents and visitors since it opened March 19 at the Vernon Public Art Gallery and a satellite exhibit space across from Cenotaph Park. “The numbers are way up and we’re very excited,” said Dauna Kennedy Grant, VPAG executive director. “We are averaging about 100 people a day between the two locations. It’s more than anticipated.” The triennial features 90 works of art until May 21. Organizers originally considered 179 artists from 35 countries and 23 were ultimately selected to have their work on display. “People are curious about

Provincial funds on track for rail corridor purchase RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

Provincial cash is being pumped into preserving a rail corridor. Victoria committed Tuesday to providing $7.2 million towards the purchase of the abandoned Canadian National line from Coldstream to Kelowna. “By putting an unused rail line to better use, connecting communities as a Christy Clark cycling and walking trail, there will be even more reasons to get outside,” said Premier Christy Clark. Clark’s announcement came as no surprise to the local jurisdictions who will

make up the remainder of the $22 million price tag. “We’ve been basing our figures on a provincial grant happening,” said James Baker, Lake Country mayor. Besides Lake Country, the other partners are Kelowna and the Regional District of North Okanagan. “I’m pleased they (province) have recognized it’s a positive thing for the region,” said Juliette Cunningham, chairperson of the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee, which is part of RDNO. However, provincial funding depends on a positive April 25 referendum in Lake Country to borrow $2.6 million for the rail purchase. “By making our intention clear to financially assist with the acquisition, I hope it will better inform residents of Lake Country as they consider how they will vote on the

2015

upcoming referendum,” said Norm Letnick, Lake Country MLA. Baker is confident government funding will alleviate some public concerns over buying the land. “We see this as an investment for the future and an opportunity for (tourism) revenue so we don’t have to tax,” he said. That view is also supported by Cunningham. “We don’t often get an opportunity for such a contiguous public access. It opens up opportunities for tourism,” she said. The Okanagan Indian Band recently filed documents in B.C. Supreme Court over its claim to the Commonage lands, which includes the CN line along Kalamalka Lake. Chief Byron Louis doesn’t believe the provincial government is interfering in the case by helping local communities purchase the corridor.

“I don’t think it will have much effect on the court case either way,” he said. “Courts don’t decide based on whether a sitting government is in favour or not. They look at the facts.”

Okanagan College and the Okanagan College Faculty Association, representing about 255 professors, have reached a tentative agreement. The tentative settlement is for a five-year term beginning April 1, 2014. It includes a 5.5 per cent wage increase over the five years with potential for additional increases if the B.C. economy exceeds the annual forecasts set by the Economic Forecast Council during the last four years of the agreement. Dates for the college board of governors and the faculty association to consider the tentative settlement have yet to be determined.

Wilson received 204 councillor votes. There were 25 declared councillor candidates. Among the priorities for the newly elected band council are build-

ing on its ever-improving administration level, and improving its infrastructure. “Like everybody else, our land is not worth much without water so we’re looking at what venues are available,” said Chief Louis. “We’re looking at things like natural gas, too, and once we get those in place, we’ll be able to look at attracting businesses to set up.” One other priority that Louis says also affects the City of Vernon is cleaning up possible unexploded ordinances found on

band land. Areas such as the Goose Lake and Glen Emma Ranges were used in both world wars for training, and the

potential for unexploded shells found on the land does exist. “We were told that once they stopped using the sites (for training)

that clean up would be done,” said Louis. “That was in 1991. Hardly any work has been done on clean up beyond exploratory.”

Vernon Bull-A-Rama ready to ride ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

It’s eight seconds of spine-rattling, bone-jarring drama. Or, at least the cowboys hope it lasts eight seconds. Coyote Creek Rodeo presents its fourth annual Vernon Bull-A-Rama Saturday, 2 p.m. at Coyote Creek Ranch on Westside Road (around the corner from the Okanagan Indian Band office – watch for signs). “We’ll have 30 bull riders from B.C., Canada, the U.S. and Australia,” said Wade Marchand, with Coyote Creek Rodeo. Among those expected to compete for the prize money is Vernon’s Cody Moore, who has won the event two of the last three years. The 30 bull riders will all try to stay on in the first go-round for the mandatory eight seconds. The top six scorers advance to the short-go. The rider with the top combined score from the two performances will be declared the winner, and will then have a chance to ride a special “bounty bull” to pocket another $1,000. “All they have to do is stay on for eight seconds,” said Marchand. “It doesn’t matter what they score.” The bucking stock is being provided by Vernon’s

Coyote Creek Rodeo and JRB Bucking Bulls, along with stock contractors from Merritt and Kamloops. Spectators will also have a chance to get in on the action and the winning as the fan favourite Watkin Motors Ring of Fear returns. A total of 12 fans will have a chance to compete for $500, a custom made belt buckle and a coat. There will be six circles placed inside the bull ring, and, in each of the two rounds, six contestants will stand inside one of the circles as a bull is let loose inside the arena. The last person to leave their ring is declared the round winner. The two winners will then meet for a chance to win the prizes. Tickets for Bull-A-Rams are $13 in advance (available through Ticket Seller, 3800-33rd Street, 250-549-7469) or $18 at the gate. Sponsors for the event include The Green Pub, Great West Equipment, Little Kingdom-TRU Hardware Gas Station and Autowear Accessories.

Mission accomplished. The Vernon Breastfeeding Club hosted a feed-in Saturday at the Village Green Centre’s food court to bring awareness and education concerning a woman’s right to breastfeed her child in public. The event was attended by about 50 people. “I think the feed-in went really well,” said Amanda Kopiak, Vernon Breastfeeding Club facilitator. “We had a lot of mothers in attendance with their babies and toddlers, other support people including husbands, friends, grandparents, and other members of our community who wished to stand up for women’s rights.” The feed-in was initiated following an incident at the mall last week where a woman breastfeeding her child was approached by mall security and was told by a guard there was a better time and place for

Village Green Centre and the mall’s security company apologized for the incident with the guard relieved of mall duties until he receives more sensitivity training and undergoes an evaluation on public relations conduct. The incident was splashed on social media sites which led to comments both for and against the proposed feed-in. “Some of the people passing by may think that the action we took was extreme, but I believe that sometimes an extreme approach is what evokes change in the world,” said Kopiak. “This feed-in was a small step towards raising awareness about the right to breastfeed in public, but the world still has a ways to go to normalize breastfeeding. “The more breastfeeding is observed, the more accepted it becomes.”

A cigarette is the culprit in an early morning house fire Friday. BX-Swan Lake firefighters were called to the home in the 700 block of 35th Avenue just before 1 a.m. Hay bales stored at the back of the home were sparked after an occupant had gone out on to the patio for a cigarette. “There was a bit of damage to the house,” said firefighter Dave Sibilleau, who was first on scene at the fire. “It went up into the patio, burnt through it and

Driver pulled over Morning Star Staff

A young driver is facing trouble from the RCMP and his parents. A member of the North Okanagan Traffic Services was patrolling Friday at 10:30 p.m. in the area of Kalamalka Road in Coldstream when he noticed a Toyota Tercel being driven erratically. The officer checked the vehicle and learned that it was being driven by a 17-year-old Vernon male. “This young man was operating his mother’s work vehicle at the time,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “Further investigation found him to be impaired by alcohol, along with his two passengers.” The driver also turned out to be unlicensed. He was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, as well as several traffic violations. The parents of the three individuals came to pick them up. “The young driver might be in a bit more trouble with his parents as the company vehicle has been impounded for 30 days,” said Molendyk.

He credits another occupant for attacking the blaze until firefighters arrived. “One of the people there had a garden hose and was doing their best to keep it down until we got there with bigger fire power.” Along with smokers being extra conscious of properly extinguishing their cigarettes, Sibilleau insists that the storage of hay next to a residence is a fire hazard that all homeowners should be cautious of.

Driving into controversy

t’s been some time since I navigated my way through Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, but with the ongoing controversy over Cosens Bay Road, I filled up with gas and went for a drive. As I entered the park, I went up a brief rise and came upon a large flat with sweeping views of the park and westward towards Kalamalka Lake and Terrace Mountain in the distance. The gravel road, at this point, was in good condition and wide enough for a Sherman tank to roll past. However, the scenario evolved quickly as I began to descend around a couple of narrow bends. Hugging the right bank, I began to consider what I Richard Rolke would do if I came across an oncoming vehicle, but none materialized. The road then flattened out, but remained narrow, as I went past a series of fences and a walking path that goes down to the beach. Despite no parking signs, a vehicle occupied part of the road width. From there, I climbed another hill up past a gurgling creek. Wash-board conditions kept me bouncing but that’s not unexpected on a gravel incline. Corners awaited and sight-lines were short, but that just meant going slow and remaining attentive, particularly as two cyclists abandoned their car on the side of the road and headed up a trail. I made my way past the parking lot for Cougar Canyon, inched along massive power poles and left the park and entered what is commonly known as the Cosens Bay cabin colony — a small enclave of older, established summer getaways and newer, expansive residences. It was within the residential area that the road deteriorated the worst — giant ruts filled with water provided a rough ride while there wasn’t sufficient space for me to pass a fellow and his dog comfortably. I kept following the

BEYOND THE HEADLINES

road until I came upon a gate and had to turn around. The return trip through the park was uneventful and even though I did come across oncoming vehicles, everyone was respectful and backed off to ensure safe passage for all. My excursion was a direct result of the Ministry of Transportation wanting to remove a 20-metre-wide right-of-way from Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park so it, and not B.C. Parks, has jurisdiction over the road. Specifically, it wants assurances that it can conduct safety and maintenance work. Now there is no question that some sections of the road are precarious for motorists, particularly if two are side by side. However, if you consider the route is essentially a bush road, it’s in pretty good shape. Yes it is narrow, but so are many roads in Coldstream and the BX, and quite frankly some right in the heart of Vernon’s East Hill. Drive Cosens Bay Road with respect and you shouldn’t experience any major issues. Except for some specific locations where limited widening is needed and possibly some pull-outs, it’s difficult to understand why the ministry needs a 20-metre swath along the entire length of the 4.5-kilometre road. Opponents of the ministry’s plan suggest a right-of-way will further divide the park’s ecosystem, but that’s not an outstanding concern for me as the road has been there for decades and any damage to flora and fauna is already done. The bottom line, for me, is that expanding the entire right-of-way isn’t necessary given that such maintenance has occurred through park status and current conditions force motorists to slow down. There has to be a mechanism other than actually removing land from the park to allow for ongoing maintenance and to improve safety. And that should be the Ministry of Transportation’s ultimate focus rather than fostering tension among park users and property owners.

Would somebody in the Liberal office please take control of Christy Clark’s Twitter account? Our esteemed leader is becoming less esteemed every time she takes to social media. First, she posts a picture to Twitter, letting all her followers know how proud she was to have found a keepsake album from Rolf Harris - the disgraced entertainer currently serving a 69-month sentence for indecent assaults on four teenage girls. “Give her a break,” and “she didn’t know” were some of the comments coming to her defence. We find it hard to fathom that such a big fan of Harris would have no idea he is in jail. And while perhaps she can justify not knowing Harris’ whereabouts, not knowing the reason for Good Friday is a little more concerning. “Good Friday reminds us that hard work and sacrifice are rewarded. I hope you have a restful and meaningful Easter long weekend.” Yes folks; Christy Clark mistook Easter for Labour Day. Either that, or she believes that hard work and sacrifice should be rewarded with crucifixion. Politicians give the media plenty of fodder for questioning their common sense during their day-to-day activities. But Christy Clark has taken the challenge to a whole new level. Our premier has a serious case of foot-in-mouth disease. Remember when the favourite retort of those caught in an embarrassing situation was to claim they were misquoted? Nowadays, the popular argument among those unwise enough to engage in social media before letting their brains process their work is that their Twitter accounts were hacked. It’s surprising Clark did not use that one on at least one occasion last week. — Comox Valley Record

Work together for safety sake

am a parent of a child at Beairsto school. I was at Beairsto PAC meeting recently and one of the items on the agenda was regarding the building of the Tim Hortons and a gas station that will be across the street from Beairsto. Many parents are concerned that this development has the potential to increase the safety risks of our children walking to school. We live on 25th Street (between 32nd Avenue and 35th Avenue). One of the reasons we chose to purchase a house in this location was so we could live close to Beairsto. We desired to be close to their school so we would have the option of walking to school. I have three children: Grade 2 (at Beairsto), kindergarten (at Harwood for one year) and a threeyear-old. Instead of being enjoyable, our walk to and from Beairsto every day has been filled with many safety hazards along the way. Along with our neighbours, we have been advocating for sidewalks and traffic calming on our street. From conversations with the city council, it seems that sidewalks will be installed. However, the time frame is uncertain, and in the mean time, we are still faced with sharing 25th Street with heavy and quick traffic as we walk every day. It feels dangerous to be walking with my three little kids, even when I am there to direct them and supervise them. Although I am happy to hear that sidewalks will be in place at some point, I am greatly saddened to learn

that traffic calming will not be introduced as there is a great need for this. A second area of concern on our daily walk is the intersection of 27th Street and 35th Avenue. It is already a very busy intersection. I fear that with the introduction of Tim Hortons and a gas station in the adjacent lot, this could become an even more dangerous intersection for our children. I am hoping that extreme measures will be taken by the city and the developers to ensure our children are safe going to and from school. I’m not sure exactly what is required to make sure that this happens but I wanted to bring this to your attention and request that this be looked at closely. I am not willing to risk my children’s lives to go to school. I had intended to write this letter for the last couple of days and had not gotten around to it yet. However, an incident occurred recently that has intensified the urgency to have my voice heard. One

afternoon, after meeting my oldest child at Beairsto after school, my three kids and I attempted to cross 35th Avenue at 27th Street. My five-year-old, who is usually very safety conscience, saw the light change from red to flashing green. There is no controlled crosswalk signage in this direction – no hand or walk sign. She was two steps ahead of me and started to walk off the sidewalk into the crossing lane on the street. A vehicle that was right near us on 35th Avenue started to move in order to turn right on to 27th Street. The driver did not stop for my daughter, even though my daughter had the rightof-way. If I had not yelled at my daughter to stop, and if she had not listened to me and stopped immediately, she was would have been hit by this vehicle. She stopped in the nick of time. The driver of the vehicle did not even acknowledge this incident or even look at us or stop. He just kept going as if we were invisible. I’m not sure how he could have been so unaware or so

ignorant of the danger he was causing. It was a very close call. Please know that I do everything in my power to make sure that my children are safe. I teach them over and over again how to watch for cars, hold hands crossing the street, stay in the white lines, etc. But they are kids and they are not always paying attention, even when they should be. I only have two hands. I have three children. I cannot hold all their hands with my own. I encourage them to stay with me always while crossing and I have the third child hold one of their sibling’s hand. It doesn’t always work. At this point, I’m not sure what else I can do. If I walk my children in the other direction, on to 32nd Avenue, we then need to walk along 27th Street on the sidewalk to the front of the school. This does not feel safe either. Or, we need to walk over to the school entrance where the buses stop. This

does not feel safe either. If I start driving them, which seems ridiculous since we live so close, then I am only adding to the problem of vehicle congestion at the intersections and at the school. I know the school is working on decreasing the congestion as it is a significant problem at the school already. It seems from the articles I have read in The Morning Star that Vernon is concerned to make this city a family friendly city in order to encourage families to move here and make Vernon a long-term home. We moved here one-andhalf years ago and are surprised and disappointed in what we have experienced. In all of the other cities I have lived in (all larger than Vernon), I have not felt more unsafe than I do here with my children. I am pleading that all parties involved work together to ensure that our children are kept safe. In addition to ensuring that the new development is configured in a way that does not effect Beairsto traffic and safety, I am also hoping that other measures can be taken. Some suggestions are to provide adult crossing guards during morning and afternoon times, changing the intersection lights to a fully controlled intersection, and providing an overpass for pedestrians. I know that I am not the only parent who is concerned and who has experienced their child almost being hit by a vehicle at that intersection. Please help us keep our children safe. Sarah Penner

RAIL TRAIL Is it legal to sell a rightof-way that you don't hold title to? As far as I know, CN never purchased the land, and if that's the case, how can you sell something you don't own legally? I think this is something the provincial and federal governments should take on, if it's proven that CN can sell the right-of-way whether it owns it or not. I'm not against it, but just believe it should be a joint provincial-federal project or Parks Canada. The local taxpayers already have a huge tax load to carry without adding more, right? Local wrestlers take to ring to support hospital Jennifer Smith Morning Star Staff

Legends and locals in the field of wrestling take to the Vernon Proving Ground ring for a fitting cause Thursday. “You want the Vernon Jubilee Hospital to be well maintained by the time I send you there,” Sugar Shane (Shane Eigard) warned opponent Black Dragon (Brett Como), as the charity event supports the VJH Foundation. Eigard and Como, both of Vernon, are just two of the features at Proving Ground, which includes a Thrash wrestling grudge match against Big West promotions. The evening at the Vernon Recreation Complex will include a six-man Battle Royal

with the winner going on to face wrestling legend ‘Double J’ Jeff Jarrett, former WWE/ WCW/TNA star. Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund and other guests might even get involved in the charity event. It’s a highlight for Eigard, being involved in such a high-calibre event at home, as he goes face to face with some of the very wrestlers he idolized growing up. Namely, Black Dragon. Eigard always admired the masked wrestler, and now he gets to face him in the ring. Most people never even get to meet their childhood icon, let alone touch them, but this is an “honour”

Vernon’s Shane Eigard, in his days as a referee, declares Black Dragon (Brett Como, also of Vernon) winner in a wrestling match. Now Eigard, or Sugar Shane, will be playing a different role in the ring as he goes up against the Dragon, among others, for Proving Ground Thursday. Eigard garners for his second time.

important point for him, as wrestling is a tradition with deep roots in his family. “We have a long going family thing of just loving wrestling,” said Eigard, who shared

the passion with his father, and now shares it with his own son. Eigard is relatively new to this side of the ring - it’s been just over a year now since he debuted in January

2014. “I started as an official three years ago,” said Eigard, whose wrestling involvement spawned from a call that a couple wrestlers didn’t like, so they roughed him up and challenged him. “I was just a victim of circumstance,” said Eigard, who never went to school for the sport, as most athletes do. “And I’ve been trying to find ways to learn as much as I can.” That’s where Black Dragon comes in. With 25 years experience in the ring under his belt, the masked crusader has a lot of knowledge to share. And he enjoys doing it. “It’s kind of cool because you show them the ropes,” said Como, who moved to Vernon 20 years ago. Although he is now only wrestling part time, the once full-time wrestler says it’s not easily given up. “It’s kind of hard to stop,” said Como, who was once told when he was wrestling full time he was one of about 1,000 world-wide. “It’s in your blood.” He, and Eigard, are also equally pumped to see this calibre of event come to their hometown. “This is the size of a show we haven’t seen in 10 to 20 years,” said Eigard, as smaller matches are often held in the North Okanagan, but nothing as large as this, as up to 800 fans can pack the venue. Tickets for the show are available at the door ($20) and at various locations ahead of time ($15), but sales are encouraged from the VJH Foundation directly, as it receives a bonus $5 donation for every ticket it sells. A concession, including popcorn from Baron Insurance, Cotton Candy from Cotton’s Chocolate (with half proceeds going to the Sweet Smiles Society) and Beer from Tree Brewing will be on hand. The event goes Thursday at 7 p.m., with doors open at 6.

MasterChef Canada’s Innis is in the top eight Vernon dental hygienist Jennifer Innis has survived yet another week on the televised cooking competition Kristin Froneman Morning Star Staff

And then there were eight. Vernon’s MasterChef Canada contestant Jennifer Innis has survived yet another week on the cooking competition after her team won the team challenge on Sunday’s episode. Entitled Wedding on the Waves, Innis and her fellow competitors were tasked with catering a wedding on a cruise boat in Toronto’s harbour. After successfully getting through last week’s birthday cake mystery box challenge and pressure test, the 33-year-old dental hygienist and mother of three joined the others in creating French-inspired canapés, appetizers, and main dishes for the bride, groom, and their wedding guests. “The stakes are so high when

Saved from elimination, Innis and her teammates returned to the MasterChef Canada kitchen to watch the blue team’s five members compete in the pressure test. Spanish road movie, Living is Easy with Eyes Closed, is a charmer For The Morning Star

The Vernon Film Society’s first film of the spring season will be shown Monday at the Towne Cinema. Living is Easy with Eyes Closed is a charming nostalgic road movie with the title coming from The Beatles’ song Strawberry Fields Forever. Directed by David Trueba, this Spanish movie is inspired by the true story of a teacher who uses Beatles’ lyrics to teach his students English. He sets off on his journey hoping to clarify the meaning of some lyrics he can’t quite understand and of course to meet his hero John Lennon. Lennon was making the movie How I Won the War in Almeria while attempting to leave The Beatles and become an actor. On his way, the teacher, Antonio, played by Javier Camara (Talk to Her), meets two runaways, Juanjo, a 16 year old escaping from his suffocating home and father, and Belén, a 20-year-old pregnant girl reluctantly plan-

ning to go home to her mother. Together they travel in Antonio’s Fiat across the stunning backdrop of Franco’s sun-drenched Spain. This comedy/drama evokes a period of transition when the Franco dictatorship could no longer shield the younger generation from pop culture influences. As we accompany the unlikely threesome, we see them reach a destination where they will learn more about themselves and one another than they could have imagined. “This small gem offers a lovely evocation of Spain as well as a touching tribute to an unforgettable moment in time when The Beatles seemed to offer brand new possibilities,” reads a review in The Hollywood Reporter. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. It shows at the Towne Cinema Monday at 5:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $7, available one week ahead at the Theatre and the Bean Scene. The movie is not yet rated.

Did you know that... Some kinds of leaks in your exhaust system can be deadly. Indeed, even though the sytem is made of stainless steel, some of the welding can deteriorate and the rust that accumulates can be deadly over time.

The Eyers family, Cohen (left), Risa, Don and Dixon, invite everyone to Vernon’s second annual Autism Awareness Walk and BBQ Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Polson Park.

Everyone knows that each child develops at his or her own rate and that no comparisons should be made. “I couldn’t help it. Cohen was our first child and I was going to baby groups. I sensed something was different early on,” said Risa Eyers. “He held his head up in the first couple of weeks. He seemed older, even as a baby, and he was very alert and aware. He was an easy baby but as a toddler there were behavioural challenges.” Cohen, now eight, and a Grade 3 student at Silver Star school, agrees. “I like to take things apart. Toys, just everything around the house,” he said, looking up from his handheld video game. Risa said Cohen was always on the move and interested in everything that moved even when he didn’t appear focused. “He taught himself to read when he was two and has always spoken very well from a young age but he had challenges in dealing with stimulation,” she said. Risa did as much research as she could on Autism Spectrum Disorder and starting with the help of her family doctor, got the diagnosis when Cohen was three. “It was very difficult to get that diagnosis. There were tears. Then anger. Then it hit me on the head. The life you are expecting would be completely different and that is upsetting and scary.” With the diagnosis came support, NONA (North Okanagan Neurological Association) provided a one-on-one support worker and helped with information. “As parents we could only do so much,” said Risa. She and her husband, Don, had

a second son, Dixon, now five, who had health concerns by then. “We learned that a child’s outside behaviour might look different but be their way of dealing with stress. We were able to see the early signs of frustration and things getting out of control and help Cohen start to recognize his feelings and what he could do for himself. It is difficult but he’s an amazing kid, so sharp and clever and funny.”

“It was very difficult to get that diagnosis. There were tears. Then anger. The life you are expecting would be completely different...” — Risa Eyers

The family tried the different therapies available and stayed with those they could see helped most. “We both work full time and we found we were doing a lot of therapy so we decided we would have more family time. “Dixon is an intelligent, charming boy and the brothers love each other. They play computer games, do crafts together and Cohen reads a lot. He’s doing well in school this year and has made more friends.” Cohen, who is in the Montessori program at school, likes writing on the computer and did a detailed report on the life cycle of the salmon for one project. He is in Olympic Reading at the public library

and the Battle of the Books reading program at school. He also sings in a choir and plays hockey. “I made a coding system with animation and voice-over for the school last year. It was amazing. My project won the primary media category,” said Cohen. The Eyers family is getting on with life. “It’s important to me to be in contact with adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and see what works for them. They have a different perspective. We want Cohen to learn self-management in ways that work for him and to be a self advocate,” she said. “I am very hopeful for Cohen’s future because there is so much research being done and the school system is accommodating different learning styles. We’re all learning. I’m really proud of how he is doing now. April is Autism Awareness Month. Vernon’s second annual Autism Awareness Walk and BBQ takes place Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Polson Park with lots of treats provided for everyone from community sponsors. People are encouraged to wear blue and/or to put a blue light in or on their home to show their support. Editor’s note: Light it Up Blue was launched by Autism Speaks in 2010 in support of World Autism Awareness Day which takes place April 2. Iconic landmarks around the world Light It Up Blue in celebration of World Autism Awareness Day to show their support. This year, more than 16,000 buildings around the world were illuminated in blue to shine a bright light on autism, including the Empire State Building in New York City and the Great Sphinx and Great Pyramids in Egypt.

Prepare plants by hardening off

H

ope you all had a fantastic Easter. The full moon was beautiful in a clear sky Saturday night. A lot of trees are in bloom and the birds are busy building their nests. All of our birdhouses have already been rented for the season.

This year I started my seeds early because of the mild weather, and it makes for transplanting at an earlier date. By now I am running short of space and lights in the house. For the first time, I had to put the heat on in my small greenhouse.

Let us help you sort through the many layers of growing older! We offer a wide variety of information & resources pertaining to the care, support & safety of seniors.

Over the weekend, the temperature outside went down to —1 C and maybe more as the roofs were white and some of the plants in the garden were frozen. With the heat on, the thermometer said 4 C in the greenhouse and the tomato seedlings didn’t mind. I didn’t want to take a chance on basil, cucumber and watermelon seedlings so they came in the house for the night. It makes for a lot of moving back and forth. Last week I transplanted arugula, lettuce, orach, shungiku (greens) and a few carrots. Nothing was affected by the frost. Of course, they had been hardened before transplanting.

ered with water. I put my whole trays in this and let the plants take all they need. When the surface is wet, they have had enough and I remove the tray from the water and let it drain. I try to never water the plants directly. For the first week you should check on them when you do this so they will not get stressed. After all this work, your babies should be able to get transplanted without too many problems. Tomatoes, peppers, basil, cucumbers, melons, eggplants and many other very tender plants should go in the ground after the night temperature

stays around 10 C. When you transplant your seedlings, try to choose a cloudy day or late in the afternoon. There are lots of ways of cheating the weather by using hot caps, row cover, kozy-coats, tunnels, etc. You can find a lot of sites on the internet or many seed catalogues that sell these and will give you all the details. I will try the kozy-coats this year. Apparently, the water continues to give off lots of heat even as it freezes. If the water freezes solid, the kozycoats become an igloo, keeping warmth from the soil around the plant. For more information, call 250-558-4556 plantlady1@shaw.ca

held at Trinity United Church in Vernon. This informal piping and drumming competition has been held in Vernon for more than 20 years, with pipe band members from Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kelowna participating in this year’s event. Solo pipers, drummers and pipe bands will be competing. The morning is dedicated to solo and duet events, while in the afternoon the pipe bands will compete, along with a display of highland

dancing. Members of the community are very welcome to attend this event and cheer on the participants. Members of the Sons of Scotland, a benevolent association that promotes the Scottish arts throughout the Okanagan valley and across Canada, will be on hand in various volunteer capacities. As well as broadening community awareness by assisting with behindthe-scenes work, the Sons of Scotland will be available to answer

questions and participate in Tartan Day. This is a chance to wear a tartan to the gathering, so please feel free to display a love of all things Scottish. Scot or not, everyone is welcome at the gathering! April 6 is celebrated as Tartan Day by Scots all across the globe. On this date in 1320, Scotland officially signed its declaration of independence from England. It is an occasion to celebrate Scottish heritage and recognize the contributions that Scots and their

descendants have made to society. Officially proclaimed by many governments all across the world, in Canada it started as Tartan Day in Nova Scotia in April 1987, and by 2003, all provinces had proclaimed Tartan Day. The Maple Leaf Tartan has been declared the National Tartan of Canada. For more information on the Sons of Scotland, call Terry Muir, Chief of Kildonnan Camp, at 250-542-0437.

Hardening off your plants means getting them ready for the harsh reality that they will find when growing in the garden away from your tender care. You cannot simply move your plants from inside the house or greenhouse into the garden. The sun will burn them, the wind might break them and a heavy rain will drown them. You have to start

acclimating them slowly over a period of one week or so. This will help them to get used to the outdoors. I usually put my plants in the shade and leave them for about 20 to 30 minutes the first day. Make sure it is not a very windy day. A light breeze should be OK Then I bring them back in the house or greenhouse. The next day I double the time and give about 10 minutes of sun, but in the morning or late afternoon so they don’t get burned. You can increase the time every day and make sure that they are watered so they won’t wilt. I have a very large container with the bottom cov-

News Dinner boosts Zimbabwe Project Morning Star Staff

Mark your calendars for the fifth annual Zimbabwe dinner and dessert auction April 25 at the Prestige Inn, and be sure to get your tickets early as this event has limited seating and sells out quickly. The dinner and dessert auction is one of the year’s major fundraisers for Zimbabwe Project Canada, a local grassroots, non-profit organization that works with impoverished communities in Zimbabwe to assist with the development of income-generating sustainable projects that offer hope and benefit entire communities. As well as a dinner prepared by the Prestige Inn, and dessert auction, there is also a silent auction with a variety of items to bid on, all provided by many generous donors in the community. The evening’s entertainment will be provided by the Bovenzi family who plays traditional West African rhythms, dances and songs. Led by Bobbi Bovenzi, director of Nankama Drum and Dance in the South Okanagan, he will be accompanied by wife Theresa May, and sons Amani, 10; Moses, seven; and Malaika, four. “Their performances delight audiences of all ages with their precision drumming, harmony singing, amazing drum solos, as well as the ever popular and fun audience interaction,” states a release.

Vernon parks host family evenings

In addition to the entertainment, this year, the Zimbabwe Project directors are excited to have a special guest speaker from Zimbabwe. Peter Maguuw is a businessman who resides in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, and is ZPC’s man on the ground, overseeing projects and helping them run smoothly in between ZPC team visits there. Maguuw will share first hand information about the challenges faced by Zimbabweans today and the impact ZPC sponsored projects have on communities. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for silent auction item viewing, with dinner at 6:30. Tickets are $30 each or two for $50 and they are available at Curves (#1, 2901 27th St. For more information, call 250-503-1129.

lift breakfast program RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

That empty pop bottle or juice carton can ensure students are getting a head start at school. By collecting beverage containers, Vernon’s Upper Room Mission sponsors the breakfast program at Mission Hill Elementary School. “There is a need for healthy snacks for the children,” said Bev Henke, URM outreach worker. The mission purchased a refrigerator for the school and spends about $100 a week on fruit, vegetables, cereal and other items for the school. “We want to make sure the kids are provided for and have proper nutrition,” said Henke. “We are trying to do our part for the future generation.” Money raised from beverage returns also helps some residents with dental and medical care. “We buy prescriptions if people desperately need them,” said Henke.

The Upper Room Mission benefits from community support for its soup kitchen and other programs, so it wants to lend a hand to those who may not walk through its door. “It’s about people helping people,” said Lisa Anderson, fundraising coordinator. All of the empty bottles, cans and containers come from generous donors. “People bring in big bags of bottles and Boston Pizza provides us with its bottles,” said Henke. “We’ll pick up anywhere if people can’t get here with their donations.” Beyond the breakfast program at Mission Hill Elementary, the URM is providing food to students at Clarence Fulton and W.L. Seaton secondary schools. Bottles and other beverage containers can be dropped off at the Upper Room Mission, 3403 27th Ave. For more information, call 250549-1231.

in case of emergency Morning Star Staff

Lake Country and North Westside Road residents are urged to prepare for possible emergencies. The Central Okanagan Emergency Operation Centre says families should sit down and get prepared for any number of emergencies that could occur. “Know the risks, make a plan and get a kit are the simple messages to start your family preparing to deal with possible emergencies” said Bruce Smith, information officer. “It’s a good time for all residents to review and revise their family emergency plans or if you don’t have a plan, get your family together to make one.” Smith says people should be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency, while first responders and rescue

workers fight the immediate threats and help those in urgent need. “By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies, anytime, anywhere.” Lake Country and North Westside residents can visit www.cordemergency.ca. You can subscribe to receive email information updates whenever the EOC is activated. Subscribers receive real time notices whenever any new information is released from the emergency operation centre including detailed maps showing areas under evacuation alerts and orders. The cordemergency.ca website also has links to emergency planning information available through the Emergency Management B.C. and federal GetPrepared.ca programs.

GoodLife members and staff joined partners and friends to Spin, Groove and Move in support of kids recently. Thousands of Canadians, including some locals, participated in Spin4Kids Plus, one of Canada’s largest indoor fitness fundraisers, and collectively raised $875,000. The event supported the GoodLife Kids Foundation, a private foundation with a vision to provide every Canadian kid the opportunity to live a fit and healthy good life.

“It’s instilling healthy habits in children.” — David Patchell-Evans

“It was incredible to see so many Canadians come out to spin, groove and move in support of physical activity programs for kids” said Lisa Burrows, executive director of the GoodLife Kids Foundation. “The money we have raised will enable us to fund programs in communities from coast to coast.” Spin4Kids Plus fea-

tured more than 7,500 participants, in teams of up to eight. This year, events took place at more than 73 GoodLife Fitness locations, in eight different provinces. Dr. Richard Barter, affectionately known as the Spin Doctor, is an emergency room physician and group cycling instructor who created Spin4Kids in 2011.

“Spin4Kids is very near and dear to my heart. It’s amazing to see how successful it has become,” said Barter. “I would like to thank all the members, associates, corporate teams, businesses, families and friends who chose to support this incredibly rewarding fundraiser.” Funds raised through Spin4Kids Plus will support two key initiatives: the GoodLife Kids Foundation Grant Program and the new GoodLife4Kids School Program. To date, GoodLife Kids Foundation has given $1.6 million to almost 200 organizations, helping more than 221,000 Canadian children live more active, healthier and happier lives. A new GoodLife4Kids School Program is currently being piloted in 10 communities across Canada and will expand to include more areas in September 2015. GoodLife Fitness founder and CEO David Patchell-Evans established GoodLife Kids Foundation in 1998. Patchell-Evans says the GoodLife4Kids School Program is a chance to leverage GoodLife’s fitness expertise to help more Canadian kids be active in the school environment. “We’re very excited about the new GoodLife4Kids School Program. It’s allowing us to connect with kids in communities across Canada and promote physical activity and the benefits of exercise,” he said. “It’s instilling healthy habits in children which will set the foundation for them to continue to live a fit and healthy good life.”

B.C. Lotter y Corporation is celebrating 30 years of providing entertainment for millions of British Columbians that has generated billions in funding for government programs and community projects while creating family-supporting jobs throughout the province. BCLC began life April 1, 1985, with former premier Bill Bennett presiding over a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Crown corporation’s brand new headquarters in Kamloops, which continues to serve as the corporation’s head office. “We’re proud to see that over the past couple of decades, gaming has grown into a $2.1-billion industry that provides family-supporting jobs for British Columbians across the province, while helping fund health care, education and other priority programs,” said Finance Minister Michael de Jong. The corporation started out as a lotteryonly business with two weekly games and a mandate to generate extra funding for Expo ‘86, what was then the biggest event B.C. had ever hosted. Through the government of B.C., $250 million of lottery revenue was earmarked for the staging of Expo ‘86 and $20 million of lottery

United U13s claim Ice Breaker Morning Star Staff

Vernon United melted away the competition at the U13 Girls Rep Soccer Ice Breaker season opening tournament in Lake Country. United, coached by Brett Bandy, James Lockwood and Genevieve Nice, went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 13-5 and capping things with a 3-0 win over Kelowna United for gold. “The success was due to the girls playing as a team, with determination and 100 per cent effort from start to finish every match,” said Bandy. United opened with a 3-2 win over Kelowna, defeated the Kamloops Blaze 2-1 and grounded the Nelson Selects 5-2. “It’s not possible to pick an MVP for the tournament because in each match there were four or five players who played outstanding, six different girls scored goals, and every player did their job,” said Bandy. Ann Cherkowski, Ava Mclennan, Emma Lockwood and Alexis Gauvin-Nice controlled the midfield along with adding an offensive threat. Ashley Budgen, Keaira Korberg, Rane Smith and Tianna Colvin were dominant at the back line. Lanaya Bandy kept opponents on their heels as a striker, finishing with both feet. Vernon United U14 Boys opened their season finishing fourth in the Ice Breaker. United opened Friday morning with a 2-0 win over Kelowna United Predators. Lee Christensen opened the scoring at 20

minutes on a play set up by Zack Laranjo. Oliver Meyer and Cole Johnson worked the possession game taught in winter training. Game MVP Chris MacIntosh went top cheddar with a curling free kick in the second half. Jarrod Jameson took the shutout. Vernon claimed its second victory Friday afternoon with a 4-1 result over the Kelowna Warriors. Shaun Boucher sent the first wake-up call at 12 minutes with a blistering knee deflection off a corner feed from Johnson. Laranjo targeted a confident pass to Johnson who deftly found the back of the net in the second half. Kelowna answered quickly with a high lob just out of Jameson’s reach. Vernon pulled away in the second half with Jacob Baycroft setting up Noah Podolski to feed MacIntosh who found the slot. Tax News

from Dean Chapple at H&R Block Deciding if you have a dependant for tax purposes can be a complicated procedure. Basically a dependant of a taxpayer is someone who relies on you for support; this could include a spouse, child, parents, grandparents, or siblings. There are a number of credits available for dependants and each has its own criteria. If your spouse has no income, you can claim a spousal amount, a non-refundable credit of up to $11,138. This amount is also available for a child under 18 at some time in the tax year who normally resides with an individual who is separated, divorced, single or widowed. This claim can also be made for dependant children over 18 and mentally or physically infirm and can be used for a parent, grandparent, sister, brother etc. who normally resides with you and is either under 18 or infirm – (parents or grandparents do not have to be infirm.) As always, these claims are geared to net income of the dependant and only one dependant per household qualifies. For more information on dependants and tax credits/deductions, come in and see our tax specialists with your questions. Dew rules home mountain Morning Star Staff

Patrick Dew did it on his mountain. The Silver Star Freestyle Ski Club member reached the top podium spot in two events at the Canadian Freestyle Skiing Championships at the Star. Dew won gold in the Male18 division big air final, posting a score of 90 from the judges to beat Kyran Allen of the Yukon by almost five full points. Big air is a national level event that encourages competitors in all three Olympics freestyle disciplines to develop their acrobatic tricks and air sense. Zachary Fenn of the host club was 15th in the same division, posting a 43.6. In the Male16 class, Hayden Broderick of the Silver Star Club was 10th with a 52.6 while teammates Stirling Peters placed 12th (49.6) and Max Fenn was 17th (11.3). Dew added a second gold medal in his age class in the male slope final. Dew was the class of the M18 group, scoring a whopping 95.0 from the judges to beat Ontario’s Justin Mallory (86.4) by nearly 10 full points. Dew’s clubmate Patrick Marsh cracked the top10, finishing ninth with 73.6 points, and Zachary Fenn was 13th with a 65.2. In M16, Peters missed the podium by two points, finishing fourth with a 72.6. Broderick was 15th. Adding to the gold medal haul were Silver Star club members Elena Gaskell and Hayden Person. Gaskell, a double-gold medalist at the Canada Winter Games in February in Prince George, won the big air Female14 final in convincing fashion. She scored 81.3 points, compared to the 55.3 put

up by silver medalist Lia Sayers of Alberta. Gaskell had the highest point total of any woman in any age category at the national finals. Person was a double silver medalist in moguls. In the M16 single moguls event, Person posted a score of 75.97 to finish behind Elliot Vaillancourt of Quebec, who won with 79.93. Final results in singles moguls led to seeding for the dual moguls event, where competitors raced head-to-head in knockout rounds. Person was seeded second for the age group’s duals competition. After an opening round bye, he eliminated fellow B.C. skiers Sam Cordell and Kevin Leslie to reach the semifinal against Quebec’s William Gagnon-Joyal, who was seeded third. Person won to advance to the final run against B.C.’s Luke Smart, who finished fourth in singles and upset Vaillancourt in the other semi. Smart continued his duals magic by defeating Person in the gold medal run. In women’s single moguls, Jamie Rykuiter of the host club was fifth in the F16 group with a score of 58.17. This seeded her fifth for the duals event, where she won her opening run over B.C.’s Chloe Kober. Rykuiter was then eliminated in the second round by ninth seeded Mackenzie Schwinghamer of B.C., dropping Rykuiter onto the consolation side. Rykuiter was beaten in both consolation runs and finished eighth overall. Major sponsors for the freestyle nationals included Bannister GM - Vernon; Silver Star Mountain Resort; Kal Tire; Helmut’s Sausage Kitchen; Monashee Powder Snow Cats; and Ken Gaskell, CIBC Wood Gundy portfolio manager.

Vernon’s Gavin Donald shared fifth place in the men’s slalom Saturday at the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup. Donald, a Grade 10 VSS High Performance Program student, and Canadian teammate Adrien Grabinski of Calgary tied for fifth in one minute and 24.75 seconds. Mikkel Solbakken and Markus Fossland, both of Norway, were one-two once again as they were in Friday’s super G. Solbakken clocked a two-run combined time of 1:20.32 Fossland finished in 1:22.57. Hiroto Hasebe of Japan was third in 1:22.70., while Asher Jordan of Whistler was fourth in 1:24.73. “My first run didn’t go so well; I made a mistake in the middle, but I kept going and finished 19th, a half a second behind the 10th-place finisher,” said Donald, who turns 16 in June. After some quirky warm-up stuff which had his coach Robbie Dixon pour water down his back “to wake me up,” Dixon told Donald he could still finish high with a strong second run. “I had a crazy run and beat the person who was 18th by a second,” said Donald. “I couldn’t tell how I was doing because it felt fast and out of control like it’s supposed to feel. I had the fourth fastest second run.”` Donald was coached by Vernon Ski Club U16 head coach Ian Chernencoff, who suffered a knee injury in January, and then U14 assistant coach Rob Armstrong stepped up with support by VSC program director John Armstrong. Donald, who was 11th at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George two months ago, will end his season this weekend training with the Windermere Ski Team at Panorama Resort in Invermere. He will meet his new coach, Helmut Spiegl, a 30-year veteran who has earned coaching assign-

ments at four Winter Olympic Games. Spiegl once coached Vernon’s Murray Smith, who skied downhill for Team Canada and now coaches at Silver Star Mountain. More than 400 athletes from 25 countries competed in the renowned international youth ski race, which is a favourite stop on the calendar. The Canadian team is comprised of nine men and nine women from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and B.C. Canada took the Nations Cup crown in 2013. Catherine Dufresne of Montreal won the bronze medal in the women’s GS under warm and sticky snow conditions. Nikola Bubakova of the Czech Republic won the women’s GS with a two-run combined time of 1:53.47. Elvedina Muzaferija of Bosnia followed in 1:54.60 while Dufresne, fourth after the first run, reached the podium clocking 1:55.67. ‘’It went a lot better than expected,’’ said Dufresne, 15, coming off victories in the super G and GS at the recent Can Am Championships. ‘’I wasn’t focused as much on performance as on how I skied. The conditions were difficult and I managed it well.’’

Gifford Pinchot, who was a governor of Pennsylvania and the first chief of the United States Forest Service, said, “Conservation is the application of common sense to the common problems for the common good.” By applying common sense to this bridge problem, can South conserve his contract? He is in four spades. West leads the heart ace: four, eight (start of a high-low with a doubleton), nine. West cashes the heart king: seven, three, two. West continues with a third heart, and East ruffs dummy’s queen with his spade 10. How should South continue? The bidding has a modern

slant. North’s three-heart response is called a cuebid raise. It shows three or more spades and at least game-invitational strength. Using this cue-bid, a jump to three spades would be pre-emptive, indicating four-card support but fewer than 10 support points. However, if you prefer to keep three spades as a game-invitational limit raise, go with it. Note West’s third heart lead. This had two strategies. First, ruffing away dummy’s heart queen would stop declarer gaining a later discard on it. Also, perhaps East’s trump would be high enough to effect an uppercut. Note that both of these ideas come to fruition. South can no longer pitch

his club loser on the heart queen. Also, if he overruffs the spade jack, West will gain a trump trick, and the defenders will eventually take a club for down one. South, though, should see that if he sheds his club three under the spade 10, his contract will be safe (unless West is void in a minor).
