Homeless are not criminals: doctor Affordable housing is ‘a huge struggle’ By P hi l M e lnychu k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

line-by-line trimming. • The largest amount is just under $400,000, which will come from the trimming its supplies budget. Instead of automatically increasing for inflation, services and supplies will be kept at the previous year’s levels. That could be helped when the province creates a central purchasing agency that could cut costs for school districts through volume buying, although it’s not certain if that will make a difference, added Murray.

hile one couple says homeless people are hurting their business, a neighbour wants people to know that those who have nowhere to live are not the root of all the downtown problems. “They’re not criminals. They’re just people,” Dr. Liz Zubek said about the homeless. Zubek runs Shepherd’s Hill Medical Clinic, beside Maple Ridge Pool and Spa, off the Haney Bypass, by the Salvation Army Caring Place. Spa shop owners Ben and Joanne Pinkney said last month that homeless people near the Salvation Army on 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway are ruining their business and making the place a mess. But Zubek says there’s a difference between the homeless and those who rob and steal. “The homeless who are being targeted are not the ones causing crime in Maple Ridge. It’s just that they’re visible.” People think that by moving homeless people they’re solving the crime issue, she says, and that’s just not true. Like the spa shop, the medical clinic is also on Cliff Avenue, just off the bypass. On a sunny morning, she drives up in her van with her daughter, and a group of homeless people are sitting nearby. “Come and meet them,” she says. “Christina, [her five-year-old daughter] they’re so respectful of her,” Zubek says.

The school district is cutting some school bus service in the coming year’s budget, and may end all of it the following one.

Trustees find a surplus Technology, buses part of the cost savings By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board has turned red ink into black, even producing a small surplus, while complying with provincial dictates to cut its administration costs. Now, if only trustees can talk the parents into going along with cut-

ting school buses, slightly increasing class sizes for kindergarten next year and requiring elementary kids to use their own laptops or tablets in the next few years. With several nips and tucks, the school board has turned a $1.68-million deficit, which includes Murray $720,000 in provincially ordered administrative cuts, into a small surplus of $272,082. School board chair Mike Murray

said he didn’t consider cutting school busing, requiring parents to buy their kids computer tablets or increasing class sizes as indicating that there was fat to be cut. “These are things we are having to do to make ends meet. They are going to have an impact on families and that is of concern.” The district found almost $900,000 in savings as a result of its

Earth Day celebrates the environment B y T i m Fi t z g e r a l d tim.fitzgerald@mapleridgenews.com

F

or Leanne Koehn, when it comes to the whole point of celebrating Earth Day and what she hopes people take away from the yearly event is a concept rooted in basic economics. You either pay a little now to avoid a much larger bill down the road. But either way, it’s going to cost you, and for Koehn, the Maple Ridge Earth Day coordinator, the price of waiting is just too high. “Everybody is an environmentalist, to some degree,” said Koehn, whose full-time job is the community engagement officer for the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society. “Everybody wants clean air. Everybody wants safe food to eat, and everybody wants clean water to drink. So if you want clean air, water and healthy food, you’re an environmentalist.” It only makes sense, to her, to do your part when it comes to protecting the planet. She said it’s simply a lifestyle choice that doesn’t necessarily mean a higher cost of living. “People think that to live a lifestyle that has a less impact in the world is more difficult or is more costly. But really, the rewards are much better because you go back to working with your community, or getting out in nature more, and those benefits are so valuable.” That is the approach Koehn and the rest of the committee take when it comes to celebrating Earth Day. Maple Ridge is invited to gather at Memorial Peace Park on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the annual event, with its “Water, Water, Everywhere” theme. Koehn thinks people have grown numb to the dire warning message surrounding the environment. So this year’s Earth Day celebration is about celebrating one of B.C.’s most abundant and highly sought after commodities – fresh, clean water. “The goal, ultimately, it to make them think about water in all aspects of their lives. Here in B.C., we have an abundance of water and so many people here have memories associated with it.” Koehn said she had a creek running through her yard growing up and that she was always playing in it and looking at the animals. And on those hot, sunny days, she and her family would pack up and go swimming at Alouette or Whonnock lake. So this Earth Day, the goal is to get the community to start putting more thought into the one resource

many take for granted. “I think it’s because we have so much of it. We have these expectations. But, really, in a lot of other countries, they just don’t have that luxury.” This year’s Earth Day will feature a number of local artists gathering in the park. Local artist in residence Kat Wahamma will perform her specially crafter piece Water Body for the event, and visual artist Robi Smith will help people take recycled items and turn them into pieces that will be displayed during the event. As well as arts and crafts, this year’s event will feature a special Haney Farmer’s Market and for the first time, a food truck festival. Koehn said all the vendors have agreed to provide a limited amount of $5 plates. Plus there will be water play stations for the kids where they can build eco systems. Koehn said by shifting each years focus onto a different them is what keeps the event fresh. “It just a great way to get out and celebrate your community. Water is such an important issue and we hope people have fun and at the

same time make it part of their every day decisions.”

Earth Day activities: • Freecycle - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greg Moore Youth Centre, around the corner from the ACT. Pick up gently used books, toys and clothing. “This is a 100 per cent free exchange. We will be collecting and giving away gently used books, toys, and clothing,” said Freecycle coordinator Tanis Green. People are welcome to bring their gently used toys, books and clothing to the Freecycle at the Earth Day celebration on Saturday April 18, but there are earlier drop-off options as well. Several schools have donation bins to collect items for Freecycle, as well as participating local businesses, such as Monkey Business and Green Plant Care, and the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre. There will be a drop-off event the day before the Earth Day celebration, on Friday, April 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. in front of the ACT Theatre. For more information or to volunteer at the Freecycle, email earthdayfreecycle@gmail.com.

• The Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Chapter of HUB Cycling is back with its fourth edition of Cycle Recycle. The group has collected close to 20 bikes that they have helped restore and will be given away in a draw at Earth Day. • The Haney Farmer’s Market will be back this year, with vendors offering great fresh produce and foods, artisan crafts and handmade goods. Don’t miss this special first market of the year before they officially open for the season on May 9. • For the first time at Earth Day, there will be a Food Truck Festival, featuring a number of different

‘They need somewhere to go during day’ Homeless from front

She added that they make sure there’s no swearing. Zubek points out they keep the empty lot nearby clear of litter and points out the place where one of the homeless, Joe, used to sit. He died recently and a cross was put up on the city’s chainlink fence in a memorial tribute. But Zubek says city crews took down the cross after a few weeks. The homeless are not allowed to grieve,” she said. “The cross issue just struck my heart.” Zubek, whose property is fenced, thinks the city is spending money in the wrong places, such as fencing off an area to keep out the homeless. That just moved people across Lougheed Highway, behind the Kentucky Fried Chicken. And all she sees is bylaw enforcement rather than attempting to help people find places to live. “I know just what a struggle it is to find affordable housing in Maple Ridge, a huge struggle.” A few common sense solutions, she said, could make a difference for all Maple Ridge residents, business owners, residents and those without homes. Having a daytime drop-in centre to go to, possibly with resources and counselling, or just a place to go to, would help.

Phil Melnychuk/THE NEWS

Dr. Liz Zubek, outside her fenced property on Cliff Avenue, operated a clinic near the Salvation Army’s Caring Place. “You need somewhere for them to go during the day,” says Zubek. A simple matter of storage space for personal items would help, as well. With no place to put their possessions, the homeless use grocery buggies or carriages to carry them around. That brands them as homeless and makes them targets of bylaws enforcement.

“They see you pushing a cart, that’s it, we’re not allowed anywhere in town. As soon as we stop, bang, they’re right on us,” says Mike Lancaster, who’s camping out nearby. While the Caring Place has lockers, they’re not big enough for most people’s possessions, adds another in the group. However, the Caring Place tries to address both needs. The drop-in

area is open most of the week, except Sundays, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other days, the Caring Place drop-in area is open from 9 a.m. Half lockers are also available for those who are at the shelter to store their personal items. “These guys are causing no problem. They’re sitting in the sun,” talking, Zubek adds. “I can carry on my business. There

is no problem. They’re not distracting from anyone’s business.” While the location of the Caring Place now being questioned, Zubek says it’s in the perfect spot, close to the other services needed by the needy. “The homeless will always be around town because that’s where the services are.” Anita Hauck, who volunteers at the Caring Place and has been a client there, said it needs to be in a central location so people with mobility issues can easily get to it. She said the shelter isn’t responsible for the trash on people’s property or business problems or break-ins or thefts. People can find themselves homeless suddenly – after divorce, loss of a job, or illness, she said in a recent letter. “And bottom hits like a ton of bricks.” It’s hard for those on income assistance to find a place to live, while apartments cost $1,000 a month. “This is why people are homeless for so long,” Hauck said. “Then after being homeless for a period of time, there is a sudden stigma put on an individual ,which makes us damaged goods. Some folks think we’re dangerous or contagious.” Without the Caring Place, another 50 people would be on the streets, she added.

Elementary class sizes will also be increasing Budget from front

The school district already follows such buying strategies, he added. • Another $200,000 was saved though lower utility costs, thanks to upgrades in building technology as a result of its Energy Management Plan. • Requiring elementary students to bring their own device, tablet or laptop, instead of the school district providing it, will save $150,000, starting this year, when the district cuts its hardware com- Clarkson puter leases. Kids this year, however, will still have the tablets, but by 2018 they’ll have to buy their own. The devices are used in the school district’s reading fluency and inquiry projects. Younger students, however, do not bring the devices home and instead just use them in the classroom. • Trimming the contract with First Student Canada, which runs the school buses, as well as cutting the afternoon bus activity at Garibaldi secondary will generate a total of $70,000 in savings. In the 2016-17 year, however, the board is proposing to end all school bus service. The provincial government suggested that’s one area that could be cut to reduce costs. As of February, there were 370 students using school buses, working out to a cost to the board of $1,900 per student a year. Eliminating the service next year will save the school district $700,000.

Changes in staffing, administration and student support accounted for other savings. Overall, by adding in a million dollars from reserves, the district generated $1.95 million in savings, producing the $272,082 surplus. Next year, slight increases in kindergarten and primary class size will generate more savings as the district implements the second year of cuts ordered by the government. Trustee Ken Clarkson criticized the provincial government for exacting another round of spending reductions despite protests from parents and businesses. The reduction follows previous trimming of $8 million of school district spending that required cutting 70 staff positions. “This government isn’t listening because it has an agenda that is about undermining public education and replacing it with a private education model.â€? Education becomes a commodity that people buy for their own personal gain and “the idea that public education serves the community and society ‌ and all of us in a democracy, is gone.â€? The government will only stop if people demand it, he added. The draft budget was released at the board’s Wednesday meeting. That will be followed next Wednesday, April 15 by a public and partner input meeting at Maple Ridge secondary at 6 p.m. Advance registration is required at budget@sd42.ca. Another meeting (registra-

tion required at budget@sd42. ca) about school busing follows April 22 at Garibaldi secondary with the board adopting the final budget April 29. Trustee Susan Carr said reducing funding reminded her of how precarious education funding is with grants being cut at any time, resulting in downloading of costs on to parents for busing or having to provide their own computers. “That is no way to run any kind of business. “It’s setting us up to fail. Murray, formerly recreation general manager with the City of Maple Ridge, said the city has more control over its finances than the school board. “We budgeted for five years. We knew what was coming. We were able to approach the future with some certainty. This is not the case with what happens in this sector.

Next year: • The steps proposed to make budget for 2016-17 include raising the teacher-pupil ratio for kindergarten from 1:20 to 1:20.25. For grades 1 to 3, it will go from 1:22 to 1:22.4. These measures will save another $320,000 from next year’s budget. The School Act says teacher-pupil ratios can’t exceed one teacher for every 22 students in kindergarten and one teacher for every 24 students in grades 1 to 3. But in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows the average kindergarten class has 19.3 kids, while in grades 1 to 3 it’s 21.5.

A social mess Would somebody in the Liberal office please take control of Christy Clark’s Twitter account? Our esteemed leader is becoming less esteemed every time she takes to social media. First, she posts a picture to Twitter, letting all her followers know how proud she was to have found a keepsake album from Rolf Harris - the disgraced entertainer currently serving a 69-month sentence for indecent assaults on four teenage girls. “Giver her a break,” and “she didn’t know” were some of the comments coming to her defence. We find it hard to fathom that such a big fan of Harris would have no idea he is in jail. And while perhaps she can justify not knowing Harris’ whereabouts, not knowing the reason for Good Friday is a little more concerning. “Good Friday reminds us that hard work and sacrifice are rewarded. I hope you have a restful and meaningful Easter long weekend.” Yes, folks, Christy Clark mistook Easter for Labour Day. Either that, or she believes that hard work and sacrifice should be rewarded with crucifixion. Politicians give the media plenty of fodder for questioning their common sense during their day-to-day activities. But Christy Clark has taken the challenge to a whole new level. Our premier has a serious case of foot-in-mouth disease. Remember when the favourite retort of those caught in an embarrassing situation was to claim they were misquoted? Poor urban planning is culprit I n the ongoing debate over the TransLink plebiscite, we have been inundated with the pros and cons of how to fund expansion of Metro Vancouver’s transit and transportation network but little enough attention has Sidewinder been directed at how Sandy Macdougall things got so bad. Not many people are outright opposed to the suggested list of improvements, but they don’t trust TransLink, and the many Yes supporters who have vested interests in the success of the plebiscite. Practically everyone agrees that the existing congestion on our streets and highways and the inadequacy of the transit system has become intolerable, but if we fail to address the issues which brought us to this point, in a few more decades, we will again be confronted with the same massive problems. For as long as I can remember, almost every member city or municipality in Metro Vancouver has been involved in an insane competition to become the biggest, most populated area in the Lower Mainland, and that insanity must be seen as the single most prominent cause which led us to our current problems. In simple words, poor urban planning

Q

uestion of the week:

both, in regional and localized municipal or city development, is the true culprit. TransLink is merely the head of the parochial pimple of poor urban planning. For several decades, Maple Ridge has had an official community plan that supposedly regulated things like residential density and areas where it was deemed appropriate to locate commercial and industrial development. But at no time was any thought given to allowing unrestrained single family residential development from the Golden Ears mountains to the Fraser River. However, that has been the pathway we have followed, regardless of the downstream impact of having allowed that development without sufficient schools, parks, commercial or industrial development. This unfettered growth also took place without due consideration for how that increased population would be accommodated on our roads and transit system. Maple Ridge has always been regarded as a bedroom municipality because we offered too few local employment opportunities, a feature which remains firmly in place. Land here was cheap, and still is by Vancouver standards, and so decades ago developers began an ongoing drive to build residential accommodations, which looked like great bargains to folks selling their homes in Vancouver and moving to the suburbs. The problem is, most of these folks retained their jobs in the city and began to commute. With the added influence of natural

Do you support increasing the PST in Metro Vancouver for transportation improvements? Yes: 75% – No: 25%

growth, our population blossomed and we began to brag that we were one of the fastest growing municipalities in the province. Maple Ridge’s official community plan was amended any number of times to allow this unheralded pattern of growth to continue, and we weren’t alone. Virtually every municipality north, east and south of Vancouver did the same thing. This all took place while quietly ignoring the warnings from intelligent urban planners, who long ago forecasted where we were headed. And, thus, we have become a Gordian Knot of fiscal insolubility. The current plebiscite is unfair to those of us who have always resided in Maple Ridge. It is the poorly planned growth that demands we will be included with those who must now pay for the transportation and transit improvements, which should have taken place as residential development proceeded. We will never have sufficient local jobs to satisfy the needs of our growing population, but we can and should restrict residential growth to a pace that doesn’t become an even greater burden to existing residents. The blameworthy fiscal performance of TransLink officials over the past several years must not be overlooked in the current chaos, but the real culprits are much closer to home in every Metro Vancouver city or municipal council, which allows such urban land use chaos to exist. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former city councillor.

This issue has been debated for far too long and is only being brought up again by a few councillors who seem to have this garbage as a priority on their agendas. I agree with Coun. Editor, The News: Well, as an American president said in one of his debates: “Here we go again.” With the transit tax increase campaign in full swing (heavily weighted in favour of the Yes side with limitless taxpayer dollars to buy ads in major newspapers, radio stations and even popping up on the Internet), I see stories in various media which seems to indicate if we

was $288 per house for this convenience. The true addition for the taxpayers, with the new tipping fees, is that we will pay $300 to $350 a year for any contractor to pick up waste from our homes. The transit plebiscite, if approved, would add another $135 a year or so in taxes. Then property taxes increase every year. The cost of basic needs such as Hydro and heating go up annually, as well.

do not approve this increase we will pay another way. Some suggestions: raising property taxes, road tolls, mileage driven annually on your ICBC policy renewal and even threats from the heads of emergency services, (police, fire and paramedics), that people will die if these taxes are not approved. Fear mongering has never worked to persuade me of anything other than those

Add up all those increases together and it’s starting to get pretty expensive. I hope this puts the garbage issue in perspective. Like Coun. Spiers, I take my garbage to the dump and I can show through receipts that I keep the amount to $130 a year. There must be options on this issue for people like seniors and others on fixed incomes. Having half a container of garbage a week and paying $300 a year to collect it is

doing so must be hiding something in order to come out with such desperate remarks. If we are going to be forced to pay, no matter the results of the plebiscite, then why waste the money on all the ads and the mail-in vote itself? Just go straight to our wallets by way of forced debits from B.C. Hydro bills, property tax increases, in-

ludicrous. We should ne concentrating on our new organic waste program instead. Now that the Maple Ridge transfer station has bins set up for organic waste, maybe the city could offer some small metal containers for households, at a minimal cost, to easily dispose of organic material into those bins at the transfer station, to ensure it is separated from regular garbage. Bob Hebron Maple Ridge

creased sales tax, road tolls and charge for distance travelled on an annual basis. I’m sure if TransLink was to add pennies to each of my suggestions, the overall burden would be minimal to the taxpayer and we would not be shelling out millions of dollars to convince us we are a ‘democratic society.’ If we were, TransLink would abide by the results, and we all know that’s not going to happen. Annual plant exchange on Thornhill newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

Thornhill residents are buzzing with excitement as neighbours take advantage of the sunny spring weather to dig up plants to exchange at the third annual Thornhill Plant Swap on Sunday, April 12th, in the parking

lot of Thornhill Hall. “We’re hoping to get more people out from across Maple Ridge this year. We’ve had a great turnout previously said Joan Duncan, founder of the yearly gardening event. “Now’s the time to get ready for spring. It’’s also a great opportunity

to recycle extra plants instead of composting them. Duncan stressed that this is a free event for families to gather, rain or shine, and meet their neighbours over a cup of coffee and treats while they trade plants, bulbs, and any gardening re-

lated items. “People get quite excited when they see the selection. It’s always a lot of fun noted Coun. Kiersten Duncan, Joan’s daughter who helps with the event. The two spent Tuesday setting up signs and delivering posters.

As many as 15 per cent of B.C. seniors in residential care could have more independence with assisted living or community care support, B.C.’s Seniors Advocate says. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie also compared statistics for B.C. seniors in home and residential care with those in Alberta and Ontario, finding B.C. patients are prescribed more antipsychotic drugs and receive less physiotherapy and recreation therapy than other provinces. Mackenzie said the potential overuse of residential care is “troubling on a couple of fronts with the shortage of residential care beds for high-needs seniors. “Most seniors would prefer to live independently than in residential care and so we want to ensure all supports and alternative living arrangements are exhausted before we move someone to residential care, Mackenzie said. “If we are filling even five per cent of these scarce beds with folks who could live independently, that is 1,500 beds that could open up province-wide. Health Minister Terry Lake said the ministry is aware of the problems highlighted by the

Lake said B.C. has two programs underway to deal with overprescription of medications in care facilities. One is a training program for staff to more accurately determine psychiatric signs, and the other is working with doctors and pharmacists to find behavioural alternatives to anti-psychotic drugs. Mackenzie’s review is based on assessment surveys given to B.C.’s 25,000 seniors in residential care and 29,000 home care clients. Those are two of the most prevalent demographic profiles in the Lower Mainland, according to a new neighbourhood-level analysis released by marketing firm Environics Analytics. The firm has assigned one of 68 lifestyle profiles to every postal code area in Canada, based on the age, ethnicity, income and other attributes of residents. The firm generated two maps of the Lower Mainland – one showing the profiles with the highest concentrations within the region and a second depicting the most culturally diverse areas. “Aging in Suburbia” – a profile dominated by older, upper middle income suburban couples and families – is found mainly in Langley, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and

aged families still raising children and building nest eggs.” The “Urban Digerati” are concentrated mainly in downtown Vancouver, Yaletown, Kitsilano and South False Creek. They’re middle-aged, average earners who diligently invest for their kids’ education, and they’re more likely to live in multigenerational homes and work in manufacturing, trades, sales and service. • “Asian Avenues” – Successful, middle-aged and older Asian families that make up a concentrated band that dominates Richmond, south and east Vancouver, and parts of Burnaby. Urgent action is needed to stop the decline of wild bees, and B.C. cities and their residents could pitch in by protecting and planting more beefriendly flowers. That’s one of the recommendations of SFU biologists Elizabeth Elle and Julie Wray in a report to Metro Vancouver that outlines the threats to bees. “The main reason that wild pollinators are declining is loss of habitat,” Elle said in a recent presentation to Metro directors. “They’re losing their food and they’re losing their nests.” Bees need nectar-producing flowers, and while commercial blueberry fields are one source, it’s a monoculture crop that blooms for only a few weeks, leaving vast areas devoid of food the rest of the time. Wild bees aren’t transported from field to field in boxes like imported pollinator honeybees and they require flowers that

bloom at various times all year long. More of that kind of habitat could be created by cities in parks and even by households and businesses in yards and other urban areas, Elle said. She noted Metro Vancouver has already been planting diverse wildflowers and other native plants that bloom throughout the year in some regional parks. Researchers have measured a 25 per cent increase in both the abundance and diversity of pollinators at those sites, she said. Wild species nest in the ground, in trees or other areas and that habitat is also being lost to urban development or other ecosystem disruption. Elle noted invasive species are a particular problem. The Himalayan blackberry, she noted, can cover large areas where other flowers are effectively forced out and no nectar is available for most of the year. Solitary bees only survive four to six weeks, so that species won’t survive in an area if food isn’t available when they come out. Much public attention

has focused on the threat to bees from farm pesticides, including neonicotinoids – there have been repeated calls to ban the neuro-toxic insecticides that have been found to kill beneficial insects. Elle said the chemicals are linked to colony decline and even when they don’t kill bees outright they can hurt their ability to survive and thrive. “Just smelling a fungicide reduces the ability of a bumble bee to find food and to collect it quickly and bring it back home,” she said. “What this means is they’re not provisioning a colony very quickly and the colony is not growing – just by smelling agrochemicals.” Some municipalities still allow cosmetic pesticide use, she noted, but said most exposure comes from farms. Exposure to one pesticide can worsen the effects of another one on bees, she added, while imported European honeybees used to pollinate crops can be a source of diseases that spread to wild species and the managed bees also crowd out wild species. She pointed to climate change as another source

of trouble. In high alpine areas, she said, wild flowers like the glacier lily are flowering earlier than they used to because the snowpack melts faster. “Their main pollinator is a type of bumble bee that just isn’t active yet when the plants are blooming,” she said, adding that has limited the reproduction of the lilies, which no longer grow to the same extent. The bottom line, Elle said, is bees are under pressure on multiple fronts. “People want to know ‘What’s the one thing we can do?’ But it’s not a simple problem. It’s not just one thing that we can fix.” However, Elle said even reducing one threat is likely to help bees and slow the declines. More than 100 of the 450 bee species identified in B.C. live in the Lower Mainland, but Elle believes many of them could go extinct and some may already be gone. Metro Vancouver is expected to update its Ecological Health Action Plan this year with additional recommendations on conserving pollinators.

128th commute better by fall By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

People have had their questions answered after two open houses explaining the widening to four lanes of 128th Avenue, between 210th and 224th streets. Soon tenders or requests for contractors’ bids will be issued, a contractor chosen and work will begin on widening Maple Ridge’s third busiest east-west commuter route. By end of October, motorists will see some easing of the stop-and-go traffic as they head west in the morning and back home in the evening. Project manager Erica Messam said even the first stage of the project, from 210th to 216th streets, to be done this year, will make a difference. “You will see a significant benefit in terms of 216th traffic. Currently right now, that’s where the biggest bottle neck is.” The cost for the first stage is expected to be

Work will begin soon to widen 128th Avenue to four lanes. about $6 million for the 1.5-kilometre-long stretch. In addition to widening from two to four lanes, intersections and traffic lights will be improved with left-turn

lanes while there will also be a three-metre wide multi-use pedestrian and cycle path on the north side of the road. That resulted from Metro Vancouver paving over its service road that

it created when it extended a water main that runs beneath the road. Traffic circles were not considered for the intersections because traffic circles function best when there’s equal flow of traffic from all directions. Next year, depending on funding, the fourlaning will be completed to 224th Street. The road is considered a major road network by TransLink which helped fund land acquisition costs needed to widen the road right of way to 32 metres. After Lougheed Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road, 128th Avenue is the major eastwest corridor.

Churches helping Sunrise tenants B y Phil Mel nyc h uk pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

The City of Maple Ridge Tree Bylaw is currently under review. An amendment to the existing bylaw requires that a Tree Removal Permit is required for all tree removals on all properties at this time. Information on current permit requirements is available at the Planning Department Front Counter at City Hall or by calling us at 604-467-7499. The proposed Tree Management Bylaw is available on the Maple Ridge website at mapleridge.ca, and a public process is in place to ensure that Maple Ridge residents

and businesses have a chance to comment on these proposals. A questionnaire for public feedback is available on the website at mapleridge.ca/152/Planning, as well as the Planning Department Front Counter at City Hall. A Public Open House will be held at Maple Ridge City Hall in the area outside Council Chambers and the Blaney Room on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. All citizens are invited and encouraged to attend and learn more about the proposed Tree Management Bylaw.

Most people left homeless from the March 21 Sunrise Apartments fire on 122nd Avenue have found a new place to live. Now two churches, Burnett Fellowship and Maple Ridge Christian Reformed, are helping out with the final steps of getting back to normal after being burned out of house and home. While Maple Ridge Christian administers a donation fund through Westminster Savings, Burnett is helping out with food hampers and issuing Real Canadian Super Store and Saveon Foods gift cards. “It’s been very appreciated. A lot of people are coming through,” said Burnett executive pastor Paul Olson. The church itself donated $1,000, while the congregation has also donated, allowing the church to hand

out between $3,000 and $4,000 in gift cards. A family of two gets $150, while a family of four gets a gift card of $200. So far, 37 people have been helped by Burnett. However, to get assistance they have to have a card issued by the Red Cross, proving they were a victim of the fire. The church is also helping people reapply for personal identification, such as drivers licences, by paying the administration fees. “That can be really expensive.” Having gone through the first round of giving out cards, the church could hand out more gift cards, depending on demand, or give out cards a second time to the same recipients. “We know there are others that have not come to see us yet.” The Lower Mainland Red Cross said this week that most of the 106 people who registered after the fire have found new places to live.

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation. Without Audéo V

With Audéo V

The new Audéo V devices ensure considerably clearer reproduction of spoken language in company.

New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that is designed to restore speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to

is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Plan to keep your teeth–before and after retirement British Columbians are keeping their teeth longer. Most adults can expect to enter retirement with most, if not all, of their natural teeth. However, regular brushing and flossing alone, even with an electric toothbrush, does not guarantee that you’ll still be eating apples at 90. Continuing to visit your dentist regularly for professional care after retirement is just as important to keeping your teeth well into old age. Your mouth ages too. Even the most scrupulously clean mouth will likely end up with some form of gum recession (when your gums shrink and more of your tooth’s root is exposed and

vulnerable to cavities) or dental disease. For example, 43 percent of adults 60–79 years of age have root cavities compared to 6 percent of adults 20–39 years of age.1 Dental conditions are often extensive in older adults and can cause pain, infection and tooth loss. The number of adults without any teeth rises from 4 percent among 40–59-year-olds to 22 percent among 60–79-year-olds.1 Studies also show that BC adults have a higher combined rate of decayed (cavities), missing and filled teeth.2 Losing your natural teeth can affect your nutrition and enjoyment of a variety of foods; lead to slurred speech;

and reduce self-esteem. Dental disease can also negatively impact your general health; there are links between poor oral health and other health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Adults over the age of 60 also have the highest incidence of oral cancer; other risk factors include a high consumption of alcohol and tobacco, especially when combined.3 Oral cancers can be devastating but are very treatable if caught early; it is estimated that approximately 84 percent of oral cancers can be detected by a dentist.4 With planning and ongoing prevention, a 60-year-old can retain their vitality and their teeth for a long time.

Steps to oral health…for life Keep your teeth, gums and dental work clean & maintained. Brush daily, especially at bedtime, with a soft toothbrush or electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Please floss! Make sure you floss at least once a day, especially around dental work like crowns. Speak to your dentist about any special care for your dental work. Your teeth, gums and jaw bones change with age. You may require some repeat procedures or need to have your dental work repaired or replaced well before you are in advanced age.

Keep up your regular dental exams and cleaning schedule— even after you retire from work. Plan ahead for all your extended health care needs, including dental care. Consider investing in a private or group plan when you retire, or put aside savings to cover regular preventive care including dental exams and cleanings. Early detection of oral disease through regular examinations by a dentist can help to stop or slow the progression of oral disease and lead to better outcomes. Your dentist will monitor the health of your soft tissues and teeth; screen for oral cancer; review any general health concerns; and monitor the ongoing fit and function of your dental work.

Keep it healthy. What’s good for your body is good for your mouth! Limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks you consume throughout the day. Choose nutritious snacks and drinks, such as cheese or nuts, and water. Rinse with water after eating or drinking.

Keep your dentist or certified specialist up to date.

YOUR DENTAL WORK NEEDS ONGOING MAINTENANCE TO STAY IN GOOD SHAPE. Dental work doesn’t last forever. Even with regular brushing and normal wear and tear. Make professional dental care part of your plan to stay healthy as you age. Regular dental exams detect problems early and prevent dental disease.

To learn more talk to your dentist or visit yourdentalhealth.ca

Your dentist or certified specialist is the doctor of your mouth. Update them on any medications you are taking and/or changes to your health. Many chronic diseases directly affect your teeth, bones and soft oral tissues. For example, some medications can create ‘dry mouth’ which can increase your risk of decay. Stay active, stay connected, eat a healthy diet, take care of your teeth— and don’t forget about your extended health care needs! Your healthy smile can stay with you…for life. For more information on caring for your oral health at any age, talk to your dentist or visit yourdentalhealth.ca

Water theme for Earth Day

A

t the upcoming Earth Day event on April 18, HUB is going to have lots of bikes to give away. We saved some bikes from the recycling depot, and we’ve also had quite a few donations from individuals this year, especially of kids’ bikes. So thank you to Ridge Meadows Recycling Society and all those who donated bikes. They’ve all been cleaned already, and one of our committee members is presently hard at work doing some needed repairs. So if you’re looking for a free bike, please drop by HUB’s fourth annual Cycle Recycle. All the bikes have to have a new owner by the end of the day. You can find us on the concrete steps between the bandstand and the ACT. If you like, you can try out a bike or two between 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., and enter into the draw, which will start at 1 p.m. The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Water, water, everywhere”. As we were pondering our options as to how bicycles could somehow fit in with the theme of water, our thoughts floated to emergency preparedness. Whether in case of floods or earthquakes or other big disasters, bicycles can prove quite useful in relief efforts.

Roads can become unpassable when a disaster occurs, and it can become extremely difficult or impossible to use cars or trucks to reach certain locations that have become isolated. In many cases, it will still be possible to use bicycles for transportaCycling tion. Thus the idea was born. Jackie Chow The last few months we have been working on a plan with Patrick Cullen, of Maple Ridge’s emergency services. And I’m happy to announce that, at the Earth Day event, we’ll be launching the Meadow Ridge Bike Emergency Response Team, MRBERT for short. Actually, a tiny seed for this idea was planted in our minds last year, when one of our committee members participated in the “Amazing Disaster Rally,” a training and demonstration exercise that was held in New Westminster. MRBERT is planning to hold a similar exercise at the end of September. MRBERT team members, of course, will need a certain amount of training to learn how to best assist emergency personnel in dealing with the consequences of a disaster. Throughout the year, training

courses and opportunities will be offered, such as bike maintenance, first aid, emergency management, radio, urban searches, personal preparedness, etc. You can’t have a team without team members, though. At the Earth Day event, you can find the emergency services booth beside our HUB setup and get information about what they do, as well as about the new MRBERT initiative. If you think this might be the kind of volunteer opportunity that fits you, you can sign up at the booth to become a member. If you’re not able to come to the Earth Day event but you would like more information, contact Patrick at pcullen@mapleridge.ca. If you would like to show your appreciation for what our HUB committee does in the community, it will be possible to make small cash donations at the Earth Day event. It will help us continue our cycling advocacy efforts and participation in events. Thank you for your support.

Luxury and power performance, price By Bob McHugh

H

yundai Genesis is a large premium, five-seat sedan that offers upscale interior sumptuousness and top-end features for an unbeatable price, when new. The premium sedan segment, however, has proven to be a challenge for a blue-collar tied Hyundai brand. On the plus side, this generally makes a previously owned and homeless Genesis an even better bargain. The introduction of Genesis, in 2009, was targeted at vehicles like the BMW 5 Series, Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It matches its prestige competition in terms of size, luxury features, amenities and performance. The external dimensions of Genesis are actually a little larger than a BMW 5 Series. Drive goes to its rear road wheels and

the ‘09 was offered with a choice of V6 or V8 engines. The base engine is a 290-horsepower 3.8-litre (Lambda) V6 and city/highway fuel economy is rated at 12.9 / 8.6 L/100 km respectively, using the new 5-cycle rating method. The V8 was a first for Hyundai and its 4.6-litre Tau series engine features dual overhead camshafts, producing 375 horsepower (on premium fuel). It also delivers decent fuel economy, considering its size and output, and is rated at 14.2/9.6 L/100 km (city/highway), using the new 5-cycle rating method. A Genesis can get from zero to 100 km/h in a little more than six seconds, with this engine under hood. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. The front and rear suspensions are sophisticated five-point multi-link systems with coil springs. Hyundai was especially proud of the audio systems offered in Genesis. The optional Lexicon 7.1 surround sound audio system is a 528-watt, 17-speaker system and the Rolls Royce Phantom was the only other vehicle with this system. Ironically, according to Consumer Re-

ports owner survey ratings, the audio system has been the most troublesome component in a Genesis. A power sunroof and Bluetooth hands-free phone features were added as standard equipment for the 2010 model year. An optional technology package was also enhanced with smart cruise control, an electric parking brake and auto-dimming mirrors. The 4.6-litre V8’s power output and fuel economy of were improved for 2011, with horsepower going up to from 375 to 385. Major powertrain changes came in 2012. The base 3.8-litre V6 got GDI (gasoline direct injection), which raised available horsepower from 290 to 333. An all-new direct-injection 5.0-litre V8 also replaced the 4.6-litre V8 in a new trim designation for Genesis called R-Spec. Both engines came with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Genesis also came with some styling revisions, which included a new grille and front fascia and new headlights with LED daytime running lights. No significant changes followed for the 2013 or the 2014 model year editions of Genesis.

The charming townhome community is the perfect place to raise a family, offering a unique mix of two-storey double car garage layouts to three-storey tandem garage layouts. with a Shoppers Drug Mart and Valley Fair Mall with banking options and a liquor store. Nearby schools include private, secondary and elementary education options, restaurants range from bars and grills to coffee shops, outdoor adventures include golf courses and parks, while local indoor activities range from the Maple Ridge Museum, a public library, the ACT Arts Centre, Chances Casino and many others. “We are located just minutes from Kwanaka Creek Regional Park and are also a 5-minute drive from the Westcoast express station, if you need to commute to Vancouver, and 10 minutes

from the Golden Ears Bridge,” says marketing and sales manager, Vanessa Isler. A matter of fact, Isler says that “enviable location” is among the Top 3 features of Maple Heights. The others include, contemporary finishes like shaker or flat panel cabinetry and quartz countertops throughout (bathrooms and kitchen), as well as stainless steel gas appliances, and the fact that the new, family friendly community is built by StreetSide, a Qualico company. “Homeowners can be assured that we as a company have been around for 65 years and aren’t going anywhere,” says Isler. All of the townhomes are threebedrooms, starting from $330, including net GST. There is a choice of two interior colour schemes by Occupy Design., - all homes come with powder rooms on the main floor and 9ft ceilings, with the optional upgrade of a cozy electric fireplace in the living room. Maple Heights offers the kind of

freedom and security that comes from finding a place with plenty of room to grow, play, move and roam. From big open spaces and lush habitats to explore, including Alouette Lake or a huge array of hiking trails, along with camping, boating and fishing – the laidback and friendly charm of the area is a reminder that finding a dream home and location in one shouldn’t be compromised. While taking in the scenic mountains on a Sunday morning, enjoying a picnic by a nearby lake, exploring the abundance of waterfalls and creeks, or strolling to the one of the nearby stores for a bottle of wine to entertain guests in your contemporary town home, the opportunity for a great life at Maple Heights is there, it’s up to you to decide what to do with it. The sales centre is located at #104 – 11305 240 Street, Maple Ridge (240th and Kanaka Way). Grand opening is Saturday April 11 at noon!

REAL ESTATE IN MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS All listings in this publication are advertised by licensed Realtors®.

The French plant connection By Mike Lascelle

I

was sitting in the lobby of a Pitt Meadows nurse the other day saying hello to the owner, Pierre Piroche, when it dawned on me that the French really don’t get the credit they deserve for their contributions to horticulture. In fact, many of my favourite shrubs were discovered or introduced by Frenchmen and it can be argued that the age of modern plant exploration began with three priests: Pere David (Jean Pierre Armand David, 1826-1900); Pere Delavay (Jean Marie Delavay, 1834-1895); and Pere Farges (Paul Guillaume Farges, 18441912). They explored vast regions of China, Tibet and Mongolia collecting new specimens for the Musee d’Histoire Naturelle of Paris. Pere David discovered 250 new plant species, including Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) and Viburnum davidii, with Evergreen Clematis (Clematis armandii) being named after him by fellow plant collector Ernest Wilson. Pere Delavay collected over 200,000 specimens from the mid to late 1800s, with Sweet Olive (Osmanthus delavayi) and Hardy Gloxinia (Incarvillea delavayi) still being found in garden centres to this day. Pere Farges discovered my favourite shrub, Dead Man’s Fingers (Decaisnea fargesii) with its bright blue finger-shaped seed pods, which encase an edible but snotty lychee-flavoured jelly. Many of our standard French Lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) and Mockorange (Philadelphus) were bred well over a century ago by Lemoine Nursery in Nancy, France. Between 1878 and 1900, Pierre Louis Victor Lemoine (1823-1911) introduced 67 French lilac cultivars, including ‘Katherine Havemeyer’, ‘Belle de Nancy’, ‘Mont Blanc’ and ‘Michel Buchner’. He would also breed some of our best Mockorange cultivars, including ‘Belle Etoile’, ‘Sybille’, ‘Manteau d’Hermine’ and ‘Virginal’. Our water gardens would be pretty boring were it not for the efforts of Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac (1830-1911), the famous hardy water lily breeder. He established his nursery in 1875 in Le Temple-sur-Lot France, which currently houses the French National Water Lily collection.

Mike Lascelle photos

A Blue Bean Tree and Cornus kousa ‘Satomi.’

Claude Monet ordered his waterlilies from Latour-Marliac for his Giverny garden, which would prove to be the inspiration for many of his famous impressionist paintings. These hundred-year-old Latour-Marliac cultivars remain industry standards and include such beauties as ‘Chromatella’, ‘Arc-en-Ciel’, ‘Gonnere’, ‘Masaniello’, ‘Virginalis’, ‘Splendida’, ‘Attraction’, ‘Helvola’, ‘Sioux’, ‘Meteor’, ‘Albida’ and ‘Somptuosa’. Occasionally we obscure a plant’s true origin when we anglicize the original cultivar name – such is the case with the excellent Hardy Hibiscus (H. syriacus) ‘Blue Bird,’ which was originally titled ‘Oiseau Bleu’ when it was introduced by Croux Fils Nursery of France in

1958. This country continues to provide us with excellent new cultivars, such as Hydrangea paniculata ‘Great Star’ and ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ (‘Renhy’), which are more properly named Le Vasterival and Vanille Fraise, respectively. Which brings us to 2015 and our original touchstone of French horticulture, Pierre Piroche – Pierre was raised in Vichy, France and apprenticed throughout Europe at many prominent nurseries. His wanderlust and love of plants would bring him further afield to such places as India, Tibet, Japan, Iran and Australia. But it was his many journeys to China that finally led him to open his nursery Piroche Plants Ltd. in 1987 in order to introduce Asian

species, often in conjunction with botanical gardens based there. His efforts have provided us with an impressive array of valuable tree and shrub cultivars (or species), including Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’ (1987), Camellia sinensis ‘Teabreeze’ (1989), Prunus lustanica ‘Lolita’ (1997), Styrax japonicus ‘Rosea’ (1988), Ilex crenata ‘Sky Sentry’ (1989) and Loropetalum chinense ‘Fire Dance’ (1990). So whether you like it or not, there is a little French inspiration at the heart of most of our gardens and the least we can say in return is merci bien. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening author (hebe_acer@hotmail.com).

Ridge baseball growing the game B y T i m Fi t z g e r a l d sports@mapleridgenews.com

N

o sport celebrates its opening day quite like baseball. There’s just something about the sound of the crack of the bat, a fastball snapping inside the catcher’s mitt, and the chatter from the dugout that make baseball’s opening day an event like no other. Saturday, April 11 marks the start of the 60th season for the Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association, and for more than 700 kids in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the spring officially gets underway with the first pitch. Cornelius Temple, president of RMMBA, said there’s something about the game he just can’t get out of his system. “I always say this is my favourite time of the year. I guess I’m just an old baseball fan.” As the new season gets underway, with about 66 teams suiting up under the RMMBA name, Temple said baseball is growing again after a few lean years. He said he feels the sport experienced a dip simply because there is a tremendous amount of competing sports out there. “And rightfully so, kids have so much more choice today than back in my day.” But Temple and the rest of the RMMBA executive believe they’ve put a strong program in place,

Contributed

RMMBA, which hosts its opening day this weekend, focuses on player development. building a solid foundation to help improve the state of the baseball locally. “Our goal is to grow the game at the grass roots level,” he said. “That’s important for us because you can’t compete at the higher levels if you aren’t bringing in new talent and ex-

posing them to the game.” To do that he said the goal isn’t about immediate success, but rather on building better baseball players by giving them a wide range of tools to succeed, he said. He said the RMMBA done a good job at bringing off-season devel-

opment to the kids who want to improve their game and play at a higher level. “We pay a lot of attention to our younger players. We are trying to provide our players with a strong coaching staff and as many development opportunities as we can. We

are not an association that’s focused on winning. We think winning is a byproduct of player development.” An example is its Friday Night Lights clinics during the spring season. The idea is to have a relaxed and non-pressure environment for tadpole- and mosquito-level players to have fun and just play the game without having to worry about winning and losing. Other examples include winter clinics for more advanced players and providing more resources online for players, like pitching practice plans. “We have begun to build our competitive programs in such a way that we are focusing on the kids who really do want to make sport a fundamental part of what they do after they leave high school,” said Temple. “So we are developing programs that not only develop kids in sports, but we tie those programs back to physical literacy, and tie them back to the importance of staying in school.” He said by doing a better job of showing the more interested and competitive kids how to maintain and achieve their goals through baseball, the program is bound to improve. He said there are plenty of opportunities to stay in the have a career in baseball once your playing days are over. “Not many kids make it to the major leagues, but who knows, maybe that effort that we put into it will help them to find good career opportunities in the area of sport and help them stay fit and active,” said Temple.

Ridge Meadows minor remembers a pioneer B y T i m Fi t z g e r a l d sports@mapleridgenews.com

The Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association season has lost one of its original pioneers. Long-time RMMBA executive member Don Breu passed away Tuesday and will be honoured with a moment of silence Saturday during opening day ceremonies at Pitt Meadows Athletic Park, Diamond 1, starting at noon. The Don Breu pee wee AA tournament, a 10team annual event, is on the RMMBA schedule for later this season.

Breu led Ridge in first joining Baseball Canada. “I call him an icon of Ridge Meadows baseball, an icon of the association,” said Larry Walker Sr., who is the RMMBA’s umpire in chief for the 2015 season. Walker and Breu were good friends for close to 50 years. Walker said he’ll miss their weekly chats about all things baseball. “He was a good guy and great to have as a friend. It’s a big loss to the community. He’s one of the major reasons for baseball in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows,” said Walker. Cornelius Temple, president of the RMMBA,

said he wishes Breu’s family the best and appreciates everything Breu has done for Ridge Meadows baseball. “The importance of the contributions he’s made to the association over the years is hard to put into words,” said Temple. “He’s definitely going to be missed at his tournament this year.” As well as a tribute to Breu, opening day ceremonies will include Breu Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and her Pitt Meadows counterpart, John Becker, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

RMMBA will also honour some of its top coaches from last season, as well as celebrate the day with a rousing edition of Take me out to the ball game before the first pitch is thrown at 1 p.m. The season will also mark the reopening of Hammond Stadium following its $750,000 make-over. The park is set to open May 23 at 11 a.m. after undergoing extensive upgrades, including the field getting new drainage and grass, a new back stop and a permanent outfield fence.

Saturday, April 18, 10-2pm Please support our FREECYCLE event by donating any gently used Clothing, Toys and Books Drop off clothing on Friday April 17th from 4pm-7pm at The Act All items donated will be given away FREE on Earthday In the GREG MOORE YOUTH CENTRE look for the Freecycle signs.

Jr. B Flames hand out team awards sports@mapleridgenews.com

The Ridge Meadows Flames may have missed the playoffs, but there were some positive signs, said coach and general manager Jamie Fiset. Fiset was on hand Tuesday night along with a crowd of more than 60 to celebrate the Flames annual awards night at Planet Ice. Fiset said the team had a strong start and finish to the season, but the mid-season collapse is what killed any chances at the playoffs. Despite the struggles, he said a number of his players showed him what it takes to be successful on the ice. Leading the way was Flames most valuable player Boston Colley. The Flames forward finished the season second on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 22 assists while drawing 90 minutes in penalties. “Consistantly, night in and night out, he was our best player,” said Fiset. “He brings a real blend of grit and skill to the team.” He said the 19-yearold Colley has one more year of eligibility left and hopes he will return to the Flames. “It looks like he will be back, but in this league you never know,” Fiset said. As well as being named MVP, Colley took home the team’s hard hat award as the hardest working player, as well as sharing the most valuable forward award with the team’s leading scorer Jordan Rendle. Rendle finished the season with 15 goals, 22 helpers and 133 penalty minutes in 40 games. “They were the glue that kept the team together,” said Fiset. “They’re a real dynamic duo. Rendle is a very special player that does whatever is needed for the team to be successful. Whether it’s playing on the power play or blocking shots on the penalty kill, there’s no situation you couldn’t put him in.” Rendle was also honoured as the team’s most inspirational player. Fiset also had high praise for defenceman Andrew Castagna. He said his strong play has drawn interest from junior A ranks. “It’s always great to find

Night fishing is being banned on the lower Fraser River and some tributaries in an attempt to stop the continued poaching of white sturgeon. The recreational angling regulation change took effect April 1 and applies on non-tidal sections of the Fraser, Pitt and Harrison rivers.

of human breast milk are at greater risk of certain infections, including a devastating bowel disease. They often have compromised immune systems, underdeveloped stomachs or other conditions that make them more vulnerable. Some moms struggle to provide milk or aren’t permitted to because of illness or medications they use. Lactating moms who have been screened are

Conservation officers will be out in force on the water and a ban on legal fishing at night should make it easier to detect poachers who typically take sturgeon after dark, Sgt. Todd Hunter said. “That’s when the poaching is going on and people are taking them,” Hunter said. “So we’re going to be actively patrolling.” Sturgeon are a catch-and-release-only fish, but a lucrative black market exists for their eggs for caviar.

encouraged to collect extra breast milk at home, freeze it and donate it. Pasteurized donor milk has active beneficial properties for babies, providing them with antibodies to fight disease and infection. “In the past, this demand has been difficult to meet but now families will have expanded access to safe, pasteurized donor human milk,” said provincial milk bank coordinator Frances Jones.

Hunter doubts the night fishing closure will be too much of an inconvenience to other anglers, such as salmon fishermen. He said the regulation, which will be in effect for two years, is essential. “This is a threatened species that has been around since the dinosaurs,” Hunter said. White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America, with the largest believed to reach sizes of 1,800 pounds and 20 feet in length.

Post, retiring in May of 1989. Sadly, in November of that year Percy passed away. Life became even more family focused for Catherine as she became Grandma, and then Great Grandma to a growing family. Still living “on the hill”, she was a big part of all their lives. This continued in her cozy apartment after her move to Greystone Manor, in June 2012. Catherine

was predeceased by her husband, Percy, five of her six brothers, (William, Raymond, David, Dennis and Ted), and her grandson Evan. She is survived by her five children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, her brother Mark, sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews and nieces. We have all lost our calm in a storm, our go to person. Catherine left this world the way she lived in it, quietly, bravely and not wanting a fuss. “We Love You Mom” A Memorial gathering will be held on May 16, 2015 between 1-4 PM at Thornhill Hall 26007 98th Avenue Maple Ridge, BC

March 31, Catherine slipped peacefully away, surrounded by the love of her broken hearted family. Catherine was born and raised in Princeton BC. She was the only daughter of John & Alice Howarth. While working in Vancouver, she met Percy Loveless. They were married in 1950, living first in Princeton, Allenby, Hope & Haney, before settling in Thornhill. By 1962 their family was complete with 5 children, Janice, John, Cathy, Alison and Alan. Catherine’s life was busy with family and community involvement in the local UCW (United Church Woman) group and the Thornhill Community Assoc. She also worked outside the home first at Berry-

Surrounded by family, Doris joined her husband Len on the other side just 13 short days after he made his own journey. Doris was the life of the party... A social butterfly. She believed in living life to its fullest, and enjoyed trying new things. She loved to shop, cook & entertain, play cards & travel. Doris was a fighter, and she made some remarkable recoveries over the years, always with her mind set on standing beside her husband. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Lynda (Jim), Corinne (David); grandchildren Julie, Gordon, Shannon
