Making money on hockey

Can Kimberley attract hockey tournaments from Alberta to help pay for arena operations? C AROLYN GR ANT

It is a fact that most municipalities operate their recreation facilities at a loss. Arenas and aquatic centres are facilities most residents expect to have, yet they do not generate much income. In Kimberley, says Mayor Don McCormick, the Marysville Arena is subsidized by the city by about $125,000 per year and the Civic Centre is close to $200,000. “We spend a lot more over the revenue the arenas bring in,” he said. “Certain facilities will never make money, but they are amenities you need to have.” But just up the highway in Canal Flats, the community is making money by hosting hockey tournaments for teams from Alberta. At Wednesday’s brown bag lunch with the Mayor, the question was asked why Kimberley couldn’t do the same thing. “It is certainly something we can pursue,” McCormick said. “In fact we are pursuing it. Canal Flats opened a lot of eyes. I talked to the Mayor and was told $60,000 was generated in these tournaments. That’s significant money. It could cut one of our deficits in half.” Canal Flats turns away tournament requests, McCormick said so the market is there. The City Manager of Parks and Recreation is working with Tourism Kimberley in putting packages together which would include accommodation along with ice time. “We hope we can start marketing in late summer,” McCormick said. McCormick said marketing doesn’t have to just be to Calgary teams. It could go as far as Edmonton because as long as it’s a day trip to get to Kimberley, teams will travel.

Flowers for Marysville too C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

If the city buys flower baskets for the Platzl, shouldn’t they buy them for Marysville as well? That question was brought up at the Mayor’s lunch on Wednesday. It was pointed out that a great deal of Kimberley’s tourist traffic arrives from the south and most stop in Marysville to take a walk to the falls,

and hanging baskets on the main street would make it much more attractive. That was fair comment, said Mayor Don McCormick. “When we think of Kimberley retail business we tend to think of the Platzl only but Marysville has quietly become quite vibrant. There aren’t a lot of vacant buildings and there are some interesting businesses.”

The problem is not that the City doesn’t want to buy hanging baskets for Marysville, the problem is how to water them, McCormick said. The Platzl baskets are watered with an automatic watering system which was installed when the Platzl revitalization was done. Because the revitalization was partially paid for by businesses, the watering system

was as well. The City also has a small tractor which waters planters in the downtown core but it would take a great deal of time to get it down to Marysville and back every day. McCormick said the City would be happy to purchase flowers but at this point the only way to water them would be for volunteers to step up.

Work for the Womanly Brain and Hand W ork for the womanly brain and hand. Catchy title. It’s from the women’s page, a staple in the local newspapers for decades. In 1910 the women’s pages featured recipes, romance, fashion, relationships, etiquette and household hints. Fifty years later they featured romance, fashion, relationships, etiquette and household hints. The first Cranbrook page for women made its appearance in the Herald newspaper in October, 1910. Prior to that there were, from time to time, articles directed towards the “fairer sex”. The first of these appeared in the Herald in April, 1898. It was a short entry entitled “A Pretty Cloth,” and described the creation of a one yard square tea-cloth made from pale blue linen ornamented by Renaissance lace braid in cream white with attached braids in the de-

At that particular time there were, according to reminiscences by Mrs. L.B. Vandecar, only six women in the entire town, which just about matched the number of buildings. Three of the ladies, Mrs. R.L. Eyre, Mrs. Angus Morrison and Mrs. Vandecar, were the wives of men constructing the Eyre Bakery, the Cranbrook Hotel, and the Royal

(now the Byng) Hotel, respectively. Mrs. Donahue — a woman of particular independence — ran the East Kootenay Hotel. Of the remaining two, Mrs. R.L. Pratt and Miss Lizzie McPhee, little is known, but it is safe to assume that none of the group had the time, inclination, or possibly furniture and dishes to concern themselves with a yard-square, lacetrimmed tea-cloth. Still, it was a nod to the presence of the women of the community and no doubt met with some approval. June, 1898, saw an entire page more or less dedicated to women readers, with articles such as “About Gallantry — New Ways of Living Bring New Rules in Manners” and “The Provident Bride,” in which a young woman requests that her suitor give her a silver dollar upon each visit in lieu of flowers or candy and then, one month before the wedding, presents

Frank goes to Europe to make his mark and shortly afterwards Carolyn takes up with Frank’s rich cousin Albert who she subsequently marries. Meanwhile, Frank saves the life of a rich old gentleman in Switzerland who adopts him and leaves him his large fortune when he dies. Conversely, Albert’s benefactor, his uncle Jenkins, also dies and bequeaths to Albert an amount far short of that given Frank. Thus, Carolyn has sold herself for a pittance and lost the true, loving heart of her life. A bird in the hand is not necessarily worth two in the bush. The alternate version, of course, is that Carolyn gives the boot to Albert early on, marries Frank because she loves him and is rewarded when Frank inherits big-time; either version being the general drift of countless stories to come. Autumn, 1898, saw the regular appearance of serials such as “When Lovely Maiden Stoops to Folly,” by Laura Jean Lib-

bey, a very popular American writer and the first female author to appear in a Cranbrook newspaper. Her stories set the standard for the “dime novels” of the day which would, in turn, become the format for the ever popular, formula-driven “romance novels.” The first honest-to-goodness women’s page, “Work for the Womanly Brain and Hand,” appeared in the Herald in late 1910 and is worth a look as it pretty much represents the women’s pages for years to follow. It featured a lengthy article (complete with photos) on how to renovate window shades, to wit brush with a feather duster every day, keep children away and don’t let them get wet (the shades, not the children). Other articles included “In the Coal Mines” — a piece on the heavy labour undertaken on the loading docks by the women of Nagasaki, Japan, “How to Care for a Book,” “How to Get Rid of Bats,” “Find the Perfect Traveling Case” and just precisely what one should do when ones stamps are stuck together. An additional piece explained how to make ordinary paper imitate

It would seem things were looking up emancipation-wise in December, when the main article appeared under the title “Earning a Way Through College.” The suggestions included tutoring, doing laundry, mending clothes, typing lecture notes, making candy or becoming a “professional alarmist” which meant giving wake-up calls and turning on lights. Say no more. Social customs were covered in some depth, as exemplified in 1912, when the discussion included Answering the

Then, as today, topten lists were popular, as shown in May, 1911, under the heading “The Ideal Women’s Qualities” goodness of heart, order, devotion, economy, sweetness, intelligence, amicability, fidelity, patience, and modesty, in that order. The page headings changed from time to time during the early years, including Fashions and other Feminine Affairs, Women’s Ways and Whimsies, What Milady Wants to Know, and the all-time classic, “For the Woman Who Thinks and Feels.” Thankfully, for those who didn’t, it was simply a matter of drawing up a chair, opening the newspaper to the women’s page and following the directions.

Update on ecosystem restoration near Elko For the Bulletin

Exceptional winter-range habitat for ungulates is being restored to increase forage and reduce forest-fire fuels around Elko. The ecosystem restoration (ER) treatments have been ongoing since 2014 and will continue (in the form of tree pruning and a broadcast burn) into 2016. The site, immediately adjacent to Highway 3/93, south of the Village of Elko, is Class 5 Winter Range for bighorn, moose and mountain goat, Class 1 for elk and Class 1-3 for whitetail and mule deer. “This is key ungulate habitat,” said Larry Ingham, Project Biologist with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. “It’s also habitat for badgers—a red-listed predator—and ground squirrels, their main food source.” The total treatment area of 66.5 hectares has undergone various treatments to bring the number of trees down to open-forest and openrange densities. “We’ve been using mechanical thinning and mulching, hand slashing and harvesting to thin the treatment area,” said Dan Murphy, Coordinator with the Rocky Mountain Trench Natural Resources Society.

Crews have been thinning a site near Elko to open forest densities as part of an Ecosystem Restoration project. From left to right are Dean Nicholas, Mark Prevost, Joe Windels, Frank Prevost Jr., Mike Effray from Strategic Fire Control. “We hadn’t planned on harvesting, but a major wind event in November of 2014 blew down many of the ‘leave’ trees. “We were able to arrange it so these trees could be removed on a cost-recovery basis.” The site is not only key ungulate habitat, it’s used for domestic cattle. “There’s a lot happening on this site,” said Murphy. “Along with

its value for wildlife, it’s tenured range land for cattle grazing. There is fencing and there are riparian areas—creeks and springs—to consider.” Riparian areas were avoided during treatment and several tree thickets were left to provide cover for wildlife. The area is in the Elko Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Area; therefore, the ecosystem

restoration work completed will have positive fuel management benefits to the Village of Elko. Pruning of residual trees, primarily Douglas fir, will be completed in 2015 to remove the ladder fuels in preparation of the broadcast prescribed burn planned in 2016. Cranbrook RCMP arrest murder suspects For the Bulletin

On April 4, 2015, Cranbrook RCMP officers arrested two murder suspects in relation to a missing persons investigation which originated in Alberta. After receiving information that the two suspects may be traveling through Cranbrook, local officers spotted the vehicle at approximately 10 p.m. Staff Sgt. Dave Dubnyk said that through a strategic and well-executed plan, the suspect vehicle was stopped and both subjects were taken into custody without incident. Their vehicle was seized and later subject to a forensic examination in Cranbrook. “The arrest involved officers from Cranbrook detachment, the Cranbrook/Kimberley Crime Reduction Unit as well as the Cranbrook Police Dog Service,” explained Staff Sgt. Dave Dubnyk. “The arrest was very well planned and carried out ensuring the safety of the police officers, the general public and also the two subjects taken into custody”. Arrested were Cody Kenneth Bauer, 24, of Calgary, Alberta and Kristopher Goerzen, 22, of Brooks, Alberta. Following the arrest, both Bauer and Goerzen were transported back

to Calgary where they have since been charged with first degree murder in the disappearance of Nick Lush. The subsequent investigation carried out in Cranbrook included a forensic examination of the suspect vehicle that was seized at the time of the arrest. This involved officers from the Cranbrook General Investigation Section and Cranbrook Forensic Identification Section working with officers from a Major Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Section out of Alberta. “This was a solid co-ordinated effort by the officers involved and a very good example of strong communication in spite of the investigation crossing several jurisdictions and provincial boundaries,” Dubnyk added. On March 29, Cochrane RCMP received the report of a serious assault which occurred along Highway 1 near Cochrane. That same day, Alberta RCMP received a separate complaint of a missing person. As each investigation progressed it became apparent there was a connection between the two incidents. Investigators in Alberta quickly identified two persons of interest as well as a suspect vehicle.

Caribou maternity-penning project underway for second season Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild Society aims to reverse decline of threatened species April 8, 2015, Revelstoke, BC: An ambitious, community-based initiative aimed at increasing survival rates of newborn mountain caribou has begun its second season. In late March and early April, 18 female caribou and one calf were successfully captured and are now housed in a 6.4 hectare ‘maternity pen.’ The maternity pen, built in the animal’s natural habitat of North Columbia Mountains, was specially designed for this purpose. The caribou will stay there for the coming weeks, where their calves will be born safely, secured from predators. The mothers and their young will be fed and monitored, allowing the calves to grow and gain strength before all the animals are released back into the wild in mid-summer. The Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild Society (RCRW) is a community-based partnership that includes: • Revelstoke Community Forestry Corporation Wildlife Veterinarian and Biologist Brian Macbeth takes a blood sample while RCRW • North Columbia Environmental ED Kelsey Firk helps stabilize the caribou. Final Lillith Affair provides $4,000 donation to the Arts Council

Over $44,000 given to Arts Council by Steppin’ Out Dancers from Lillith Affair proceeds Mike Redfern For the Bulletin

The Kimberley Steppin’ Out Dancers have donated the proceeds of their 15th and final production of A Lillith Affair, the variety show for women by women, to the Kimberley Arts Council with a $4,000 donation to support arts programming in the community. Since performing the first Lillith Affair in 2001 the Kimberley Steppin’ Out Dancers have donated almost $57,000 to community organizations in Kimberley from the proceeds of the show, most of that going to the Kimberley Arts Council. A total of $22,000 has gone to the Centre 64 expansion and renovation project and a further $24,700 to support the arts council’s operations and arts programming. The generous support of the Steppin’ Out Dancers has also

been felt by other community arts organizations and individuals during the past 15 years. Kimberley Summer Theatre has received $5,000 and two $500 dance scholarships have been awarded to young Kimberley dancers. In addition, the Steppin’ Out Dancers have provided $3,000 to the Clearview campaign and $1,200 to the Cranbrook Women’s Transition House. The impact of the donations to the Kimberley Arts Council has been significant. At Centre 64 the recent donations have paid for new carpeting of the backstage stairway, a new door to the Green Room, and the wrought iron gate to the courtyard created by Kimberley sculptor Tony Austin. All these donations proceeded from the popularity of A Lillith Affair. This all-women show for women grew from a single night’s performance in 2001 to three nights in 2010. This year it reverted back to two nights, both sold out as usual. One of the attractions of A Lillith Affair that has made it so popular has been the secrecy about the cast. Other than the Steppin’ Out Dancers, the audience doesn’t

in recent years the dancers’ major focus has been on the annual Lillith show. Now that the Steppin’ Out Dancers have relinquished their ownership of Lillith, Kimberley Arts Council is looking for another group to take up the reins. Not only has the show been a great success on the local performing arts scene, it has provided a very welcome source of revenue to help the arts council provide programs in all the arts. Any group interested in possibly taking over production of A Lillith Affair should contact Centre 64 administrator Christine Besold. Meanwhile, arts council president Mike Redfern extends the thanks of the arts council board to the Kimberley Steppin’ Out Dancers and all the performers in past Lillith shows for their generous continuing support over the past 15 years.

Happiness is a choice

loved reading comics in the paper such as “Peanuts” and “Calvin and Hobbes” and “Doonesbury”. The authors have died or retired, or the Townsman doesn’t carry them; I miss their trenchant and accurate observations about life. One Peanuts cartoon has Lucy asking Charlie Brown, “Why do you think we were put on earth?” Charlie answers, “To make others happy.” Lucy replies, “I don’t think I’m making anyone happy.” Then she adds, “But nobody’s making me very happy either. Somebody’s not doing his job!” People like Lucy are so sure they will be happy once they get something — a new “this” or an improved “that” or the “other thing” with all the bells and whistles. If only they could get one of them, they’d be happy. They don’t ask what they can do for others; their concern is to make sure that others do for them whatever they want. They often feel shortchanged or cheated. They become so preoccupied with what they don’t have that they can’t enjoy what they do have. What’s more, they don’t realize one of the best ways to be happy is to experience the joy and self-worth of making others happy. In his book “Happiness Is a Serious Problem”, Dennis Prager argues that it’s

human nature to want more, to feel that we need more. The problem he notes is that there’s no end to the quest for more. We always want more — if only we had another 128MB of RAM … or the newest 2015 model instead of our ancient 2013 model … or the latest video game … or the latest hit by a favourite singer. Gabor Maté is a staff physician at a clinic in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. For 12 years, he has worked with patients challenged by hard–core drug addiction, HIV, and Rev. Yme mental illness. In a radio inWoensdregt terview a few years ago, he said that we are all addicted to something. “For many of my patients, the pain of life is so great they mask it with alcohol or drugs.” He went on to say, “I’m addicted to CD’s. I can’t resist getting the latest one.” In the preface to his book from 2009, “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction”, he defines addiction as the domain “where we constantly seek something outside ourselves to curb an insatiable yearning for relief or fulfillment.” The trouble with addiction of any kind is that it never meets that yearning. “The aching emptiness is perpetual because the substances, objects or pursuits we hope will soothe it are not what we really need. We don’t know what we need.” Like Lucy, we keep looking for new

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

ways, new toys, new distractions, new ways of trying to amuse ourselves because deep in our hearts and souls, we are not happy. As a result, the Lucys of the world often live in an “if only” world that keeps them one step away from happiness: “If only I get this raise, if only I make this sale, if only I pay off my debts, or if only I win this game, I’ll be happy.” Abraham Lincoln understood that happiness is essentially a way of looking at one’s life: “A person is generally about as happy as he’s willing to be.” Christian faith ought to be about helping us find this deep happiness, this deep contentment, this deep satisfaction with the goodness in life. Unfortunately, too often it’s not so. Too many times, faith is used as a way to make people insiders and outsiders. Too often, faith is used as a battering ram. I refuse to participate in that exercise. I want to experience the joy of living in community with all of creation. I want, as a result of my faith, to be one who joins with others in healing creation, in forming community with other people and all other creatures, in reaching out with love and compassion and grace to help those I can help. I choose to be happy, giving myself in joy to work with God for the healing of the world. I want to give myself, and in giving myself, find my best self. Thanks, Ice

Thanks to the Kootenay Ice for providing us with such wonderful playoff games. So sorry for the rest of Cranbrook that you couldn’t be there to see what great entertainment you missed. Also, congratulations to the Ice for the 17th year in a row for making the playoffs. We are ever so grateful to you for representing our great area of the Kootenays. Thanks so much. If you have never been to a hockey game, come out and see one. Believe me, you’ll get hooked! Can’t wait for the fall so we can start all over again. Thanks for another great season! Carol K. McLean Cranbrook

Vintage firetruck

To: Mayor Lee Pratt and the members of City Council: As I was driving by my neighbour’s house the other day, I couldn’t help but notice an old fire truck in his front yard. I asked myself, “What’s with the fire truck in his front yard? So I had to stop in and ask WHY? My neighbour’s name is Larry LaPointe. Larry was a mechanic for the City of Cranbrook for the past 24 years; he also ran the shop as Shop Foreman for a number of years. Larry recently retired from his job, but, not one to sit around for too long, he volunteered his time and skills to refurbish the Fire Department’s 1929 International Ladder Truck, the one that usually goes in the Sam Steele Days Parade. Larry, Paul, Cody and Murray were working on this truck at Cranbrook’s Public Works Garage. Paul, Cody and Murray are three firefighters who are also donating their spare time on this project. After the team spent almost two weeks working on this project, at the works yard, one of the managers came down and asked Larry to leave and stated, “you’re not allowed to be here anymore.” Larry is not totally sure why he has been asked to leave. He believes he still has W.C.B. coverage because he is actually

still officially on the payroll until May 25 (collecting holiday pay). Larry offered to sign a waiver and pay his own insurance premiums if required, to remove the City’s name from any liability issues. After being stonewalled with red tape and bureaucratic nightmares this project came to a sudden stop so he had the truck towed to his house. Because this truck is 32 feet long, it won’t fit in his garage, and he has to work on it in the gravel. I do not understand how anyone has the right to put the run on our volunteers who are such an important part of our community. In addition, the 1929 Ladder Truck is such an important part of Cranbrook’s history and heritage. After all, the City bought this truck, brand new, in 1929. Larry says don’t worry; we will do our best to make sure this truck will be in the Sam Steele Days Parade this year. I say, Thanks Larry, for volunteering your time, and thanks to the three firefighters who are helping you in this worthy endeavor. Perhaps, Mr. Pratt and Council, you could get Larry and his team back into the shop where they can do the job right. Roy Simon Cranbrook

Vintage firetruck

In response to Mr. Simon’s recent letter to the editor regarding the antique 1929 international ladder truck, it is important to recognize that this antique vehicle is the property of the Cranbrook Firefighters Association and not the City of Cranbrook. The repair and restoration to these vehicles is conducted by the Association on their own time at their expense and is not the responsibility of the City of Cranbrook. This truck was being restored in a City facility by volunteers associated with the Cranbrook Firefighters Association, many of whom may also be employees of the City of Cranbrook, during regular operating hours of the City facility. A City employee is able to volunteer as he or she

sees fit on their own time, however the City is able to decide who is able to use their facilities and for which purposes keeping in mind the best interests of the community. It has been identified that there was a safety risk to the volunteers and significant financial risk to the community regarding a lack of prescribed City safeguards and measures relating to these volunteer activities on City premises. As a result, the use of the facility for volunteer purposes to restore the antique fire trucks will be limited while the City reviews whether or not independent associations will be able to continue to use City facilities for similar purposes with appropriate measures in place to ensure the protection of both volunteers and the community. The City of Cranbrook appreciates and thanks the Cranbrook Firefighters Association and their associated volunteers for their continued work to restore and maintain these trucks as part of Cranbrook’ s history. Wants, Needs

I would like to comment on Mr. Stetski’s letter “Arts and Culture.” I believe the voters of Cranbrook have spoken. We didn’t support your ideas on how to spend our hard earned money and so we have voted a different Mayor to office. Like any budget, we all have our “want” and our “need” lists. Unfortunately our roads are in very bad shape, so for me, the roads are at the top of the “need” list. Hopefully in the future we may have money for our “want” list, but not now. I support Mayor Pratt, and although it’s early in his term, he seems to be delivering what he promised us. Wendy Revie Cranbrook

Steeples School hosting Early Years Fair April 21 S h a nno n Dunc an

Each year the Early Years Fair is hosted by the Cranbrook Early Years Committee at a different Elementary School in Cranbrook. This year the Fair is being hosted at Steeples Elementary School (700 24 Ave. N, (250)426-3352) on April 21 from 9AM – noon. It takes place the same day as their Ready, Set, Learn event which is a registration and orientation day for children starting Kindergarten in September. Entrance to the Fair is FREE and will be worthwhile and enjoyable for all families and caregivers with children under the age of 6. There will be numerous

service and resource providers available to talk directly about what they can offer your preschool aged children. From fun activities to consultations regarding your childrens’ unique needs, the diversity of services and specialized knowledge available in Cranbrook is often surprising to families. It’s useful to have so many of them in one room to discover how your family can benefit. Some of the organizations who will be there include; Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy StrongStart and Young Parent Education Programs, Paq’Mi’Nuq’Yuk Aboriginal Early Years Services, Commu-

nity Action Program for Children, Pivot Point Developmental Disabilities Growth Centre, East Kootenay Childcare Resource and Referral & Cranbrook Public Library, among many others. While adults have the time to speak directly with representatives from different organizations in Cranbrook, your child will have fun with crafts, music, story time and a play area. There will be door prizes, fun activities and goody bags for the kids to take home. Every year the Cranbrook Early Years Committee hosts the Fair in partnership with School District #5 and is grateful for the support of Columbia

Basin Trust and the City of Cranbrook that helps make it possible to offer this event to the community. The Cranbrook Early Years Committee meets the 1st Tuesday of each month from 1 to 3 pm at Cranbrook Family Connections (209A 16th Ave N, beside Memorial Arena). New members are always welcome, whether individual family or organization representative. Childcare is provided. Third Gerald Kent throws a stone during the 2015 Canadian Masters Curling Championships in Whitehorse, Yukon last weekend. The Cranbrook-based rink skipped by Ralph Will, finished fourth at the national championship, falling 7-0 to Nova Scotia in the bronze medal game. Will’s rink also features second Laddie Pavlis and lead Peter Sweetman, finishing 6-3 during the pool stage before losing a tight semifinal contest against Manitoba.

Underway at Augusta National PGA’s Masters sees defending champ Bubba Watson in the mix Paul Ne wberry Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Ga. Bubba Watson got off to a solid start Thursday in his bid to repeat as Masters champion, though he admittedly got tired at the end of his round. Watson needed a chip-in at the 17th to save par, and made bogey on the final hole. He signed for a 1-under 71 and was four strokes off the lead among those in the clubhouse. Watson has captured the green jacket two of the last three years. If he wins again, he’ll join Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods as the only repeat champions at Augusta National. With the temperature climbing near 90 degrees and the round taking more than five hours to play, Watson struggled to concentrate coming down the stretch, leading to a pair of errant drives. “I was just tired,” he said. “I was not committed, not focused. Other than that, it was a good day.” Watson managed to break par even though he three-putted twice. “If you take those two three-putts away, two shots better, I’d be in the 60s,” Watson said. “Not too bad. I didn’t play my

way out of it and I’m not too far behind, so I’m happy with it.” -------------------Welcome back, Charley Hoffman. Playing the Masters for the first time since his debut in 2011, Hoffman shot a 5-under 67 to grab a share of the lead. He got off to a good start, making birdies on the three of the first five holes. Hoffman closed even better with an eagle at the par-5 15th, a birdie at No. 16 and a 5-foot birdie putt at the 18th for his lowest round ever in a major. When he played the Masters four years ago, Hoffman finished tied for 27th. -------------------Make room atop the Master leaderboard, Charley Hoffman. Justin Rose matched Hoffman by shooting a 5-under 67 Thursday, leaving them tied for the lead on a sweltering afternoon at Augusta National. With the temperature climbing toward 90 degrees, Rose made three birdies on the front side, shook off a bogey at the tough 11th hole, and birdied both par 5s on the back nine. The 2013 U.S. Open champion matched his

lowest round ever at the Masters, a tournament where the Englishman’s best finish in nine previous appearances was a tie for fifth. Russell Henley was one stroke back with a 68. After a birdie at No. 3, Rose dumped his tee shot on the par-3 fourth into a bunker. He got upand-down from there, a nifty par that seemed to spark his round. “That really settled everything down,” said Rose, who birdied the next two holes. “I played good golf from there.” -------------------Tiger Woods hasn’t lost his competitive fire. In the opening round of the Masters, Woods flashed that notorious temper on a couple of errant shots at the ninth hole Thursday. After yanking his tee shot into the adjacent first fairway, Woods let the club fall from his hands in disgust while he stood frozen, staring at the flight of his ball. Then, with at least a view of the green even though he was on the wrong hole, he pushed his next shot into one of those towering pine trees, prompting Woods to swing the club angrily with one hand. Gathering himself,

Woods pulled off a skilful shot from the pine straw, hooking the ball to the back of the green. He managed to salvage a bogey that could’ve been a lot worse, sending him to the back side with a 1-over 37. -------------------If Rory McIlroy was feeling any extra pressure at the Masters, he sure didn’t show it. Taking advantage of prime scoring conditions, McIlroy birdied both par 5s on the back side and finished with a 1-under 71 that left him solidly in contention for a career Grand Slam. There were a few shaky shots along the way. An errant drive into a creek at the par-5 second hole, forcing him to scramble for par. A sloppy chip at the 11th, which led to the second of his two bogeys. “It’s nice to just get on with the tournament, nice to get that first hole out of the way. Now I can just relax and try to find my rhythm,” McIlroy said. “I’m pretty satisfied with the first day.” Winning the last two majors of 2014, McIlroy arrived at Augusta looking to become the sixth golfer in the modern era to capture all four of golf’s biggest events.

The offseason retooling has begun for the College of the Rockies Lady Avalanche with signing of four new recruits. Setter Sarah Wood joins the Lady Avs after wrapping up her highschool career in Calgary. “We are thrilled that Sarah has committed to play for the Avalanche,” said Cori Andrichuk, College of the Rockies manager of athletics, in a press release. “Her dedication and commitment to volleyball will be a welcome addition to the team.” Wood will graduate from Centennial High School where she earned experience at various positions over her three years with the Centennial Coyotes. “I am excited to meet new people, build close relationships and compete at a high level with a team that is ready to work hard and do what it takes to win,” Wood said in a press release.

The newest member of the Lady Avs was nominated for the Myrna Empy Award for outstanding female Calgary volleyball player and also garnered an invitation to Team Alberta selection camp. Wood has also played for the Calgary Aces and Southern Alberta Volleyball Club. In addition to the signing of Wood, Col-

lege of the Rockies announced the signing of three more recruits. The Lady Avs have also signed middle/ right side Kennedy Koop, left-side hitter Adriel Goodman and left side Brooke Paulsen. Goodman, from Nakusp, B.C., is a 6-foot left-side hitter. She spent last season as captain of the Nakusp Secondary School Cougars In addition to sporting the captaincy for her high-school club, Goodman was the recipient of

the school’s overall MVP award in consecutive years. As a multi-sport athlete, she was the keeper for her school’s soccer team and captain of the school basketball squad. Koop, from Niverville, Manitoba (approximately 40 km south of Winnipeg), spent the past year with Providence University College, leading her team to the championship final in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. Prior to playing for Providence, Koops was the captain of her high school team -- the Niverville Panthers -- and was named a provincial allstar in addition to receiving a Volleyball Manitoba graduating all-star designation. Finally, Paulsen joins the Lady Avs after departing Providence University College. Prior to playing college ball, Paulsen was captain of her highschool team and named MVP in each season she played.

VANCOUVER - An oily purple-blue sheen of fuel believed to be leaking from a bulk carrier ship has coated water and land in Vancouver’s picturesque English Bay. The City of Vancouver said the spill was of bunker fuel and warned on social media that it’s toxic and should not be touched. An emergency response team was called in Wednesday to deal with the spill on the bay that is surrounded by apartments, businesses and the city’s jewel, Stanley Park. On Thursday, the spill was visible from the seawall, on the edge of the park. John Parker-Jervis of Port Metro Vancouver said the

Volunteers Giving Back Pitch In One way to volunteer to help your community is to get involved with Pitch In Week. This year Pitch In week is April 26 to May 2. Pick a neighbourhood, maybe a section of the Rails to Trails and clean it up. You can register at operations@kimberley.ca and receive free garbage bags. It’s volunteer efforts like this that make our community such a great place to live, so Pitch In.

Around every corner, volunteers help in health care At facilities throughout Interior Health, over 4,800 volunteers provide services to enhance the comfort of patients and residents. To recognize their vital contributions, Interior Health is joining Volunteer Canada to mark National Volunteer Week April 12 – 18, 2015. “Volunteers play a key role in our health care system,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “We pay tribute to the thousands of volunteers who graciously donate their time and energy to support patients, clients and residents in health care facilities throughout the region.” National Volunteer Week is Canada’s largest celebration of volunteers, volunteerism, and

civic participation. It deserves to be recognized - across Canada 13.3 million volunteers contribute 2.1 billion total hours. “Our volunteers range from teens to seniors and each one plays an integral role in supporting the care we provide,” said Interior Health Board Chair Erwin Malzer. “By volunteering in a health care setting these individuals are truly touching people’s lives.” Volunteers perform a wide variety of services in Interior Health’s hospitals and residential care facilities, to ensure patients and residents have the comforts they need to enhance their quality of life.

We L ve Our Volunteers!

In residential facilities, volunteers visit with residents and help with recreation therapy such as entertainment, bingo, outings and events. Interior Health is continually recruiting these special individuals to fill important

roles in hospitals and health centres, residential care facilities, in public health related roles, and in communities. Visit www.interiorhealth.ca for volunteer opportunities in your area. Visit Volunteer Canada, the National voice for volunteerism, at www. nationalvolunteerweek.ca to learn more about the difference volunteers make each day, and how you can recognize their efforts during national Volunteer Week. There are online videos, posters, e-cards and other resources available to let volunteers know how much their work is appreciated.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Check on the quality of your work during the day, as you won’t want to make any errors. Later, others will look at your work and note the excellence with which it is produced. You will land well because of your meticulous attention to detail. Tonight: Out till the wee hours. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll have time to iron out any issues you have with a close associate or family member. The topic might be quite serious. Perhaps the two of you don’t see eye to eye. As a result of your conversation, you will make better choices. Tonight: Do some much-needed research. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Consider making a different decision regarding a relationship. Perhaps you are ready for a stronger partnership, or you could be interested in making an important investment that could affect the relationship. Verify first that you are finan-

cially ready. Tonight: Togetherness. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Dive into your work, and get as much done as possible. Your efficiency will be tested, as others seek you out to pitch in with their projects. Be willing to rearrange your schedule, if need be, or ask someone to fill in for you. Make calls later in the afternoon. Tonight: Meet friends. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Reach out to someone at a distance. This person always surprises you with his or her ever-changing attitudes and perspective. Someone you admire might not be in a good mood. You would be wise to steer clear. Tonight: Don’t push yourself too hard. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might be irritated with a partner. Keep your distance until you both are in a better mood. Time is your ally. It appears that you have a lot to complete and will need some uninterrupted time. Come late afternoon, you will feel rejuvenated. Tonight: Party time!

Tundra

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to return some calls before you schedule meetings or make other plans. However, it is likely that someone else already has made plans without telling you. You have a lot of ground to cover, and a lot of people are seeking you out. Tonight: Take off. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You could be overwhelmed by everything you must complete. Understand how much pressure you have on you right now. Be more forthright about establishing your limits, and you will find others to be very receptive. Tonight: Catch up on a friend’s news. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Use the daylight hours to the max, when you’ll have much more under control. You will see a substantial difference in others’ responses as a result. You have the ability to convince others of the rightness of your thoughts, but still listen to suggestions. Tonight: Pay bills. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You can afford to play it low-key

today. You will be missed, but at this point, you might need some extra time to deal with a child or loved one. The Moon moves into your sign later today, which will bring a smile to your face. Tonight: Go for what you want. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Expect to hear a lot of feedback from friends and associates, especially after a meeting. Everyone seems to want to put in his or her two cents. You could be overwhelmed by a close friend’s gesture. Pull back, if need be -- he or she will understand. Tonight: Not to be found. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Others notice your appearance and attitude. What occurs will be a direct reflection of the energy you put out. A friend might go out of his or her way to please you. You might be uncomfortable with what you hear. Postpone a personal matter until later. Tonight: Out late. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: About 10 years ago, I was working on a remodel project and discovered a hidden “treasure”: three dusty books stashed above some ductwork. Two were personal journals, and another was an art book with sexy photographs from the 1980s. I briefly glanced at the journals and noticed they dealt with some romantic breakups. I didn’t read past that. Since I didn’t know who the owner was, I put all three books back, figuring they were not meant for public consumption. I recently returned to the same house and told the owner about the items. We debated whether or not to track down the author or let the dog sleep. I think enough time has passed that the author might be interested in having these things for sentimental reasons. What do you say? -- Al Dear Al: If it were only the book with sexy photographs, we’d say leave it alone. But two journals might be of value to someone, and we think you should make an effort to return them. You already know that these things belonged to someone who lived in the house post-1980, which should make tracing the author easier without pouring over the personal content. But it also means reopening the wall with the ductwork, so you will need the current owner’s permission. Dear Annie: “Need Help” is just like me: I do not like sex. Never have, never will. I am 56 years old and have been married for 29 years. My husband threatened to divorce me many times due to my lack of interest, but I could not afford to live on my own, nor would I subject our kids to a divorce. We have had, and continue to have, a fun, thoughtful, interesting and satisfying marriage, except for that one thing. About a dozen years ago, with another threat of divorce looming over my head and the possible breakup of our family, I agreed to have sex once a week, on the condition that my husband wouldn’t talk about it or request it any other time. He agreed, and here we are now. I still don’t like sex, and he knows it, but that’s the deal. Why must someone like sex? My husband doesn’t like to read, so I don’t make him. The notion that marriage can only be strong with a gratifying sex life needs to stop. If society wants longer, happier marriages, then we need to start focusing on the other 99 percent of the relationship. -Would Prefer a Sexless Marriage Dear Prefer: You seem to think people are just fine without sex, but that’s not true. Some are, but for most, it’s a fairly basic urge. Since you’ve never liked sex, it’s quite possible that you are asexual. Had you told this to your husband before you married, chances are, you would not be together. But we congratulate you on your willingness to compromise for the health of your marriage, and we hope your husband appreciates the other 99 percent as much as you do. New resource for sport and physical activity in the region For the Townsman

People engaged in sport and physical activity in the Columbia Basin can look forward to improved support through the newly formed PacificSport Columbia Basin Society. Columbia Basin Trust and ViaSport are providing $800,000 and $300,000 respectively toward this initiative over the next three years. The society’s primary goals are to promote sport and physical activity in the Basin; provide services and programs for local athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers; and promote health by encouraging and helping the public to participate in physical activities. “The Trust has been working on this since May 2013 to determine how we can best support sport and physical activity in the Basin,” said Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust President and CEO. “We’re pleased to partner with ViaSport to establish the PacificSport Columbia Basin Society. It will draw on the expertise of the broader provincial alliance to advance local priorities.” Still in its formative stages, the society will work with Basin communities and organizations, as well as access the broader provincial alliance of sports organizations that serves as a resource hub to educate, inspire and enable residents to participate, play and perform, no matter their activity or level of expertise. “ViaSport’s mandate is to increase awareness, opportunity and participation in sport across the province, at every stage of life and in every community,” said Cathy Priestner Allinger, ViaSport CEO. “Working with the PacificSport Columbia Basin Society and partners in our Regional Alliance, we are helping to expand the possibilities for all British Columbians.” Learn more about ViaSport at viasport.ca. Working on the ground to develop sports and physical activity in the Basin, many Basin residents have been integral to this process: “Being part of this network will help bring the Kootenays to a more equal playing field with the rest of the province, improve sport and physical activity opportunities for all residents, encourage regular physical activity and physical literacy and improve residents’ health and wellness levels,” said Sandi Lavery, new Board member and Program Coordinator/ Instructor, University of Victoria East Kootenay Teacher Education Program at College of the Rockies. “This will benefit people of all ages, from those wishing to have fun and stay fit, to those striving to excel in their sport,” said Janis Neufeld, new Board member and President, Kootenay Sufferfest Society. “We’ll make better use of the facilities we already have while improving our ability to attract and retain coaches and support our volunteers. By having communities work together, it will help eliminate some of the barriers and boundaries that this region encounters.” Nine members sit on the society’s Board of Directors: • Anthony Bell, Rossland • Alan Chell, Revelstoke • Karen Kettenacker, Cranbrook • Sandi Lavery, Cranbrook • Neil Muth, Castlegar • Janis Neufeld, Nakusp • Kim Palfenier, Procter • Jordan Petrovics, Golden • Glenda Newsted, Sparwood. Columbia Basin Trust supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. Kate and William say thanks for well wishes ahead of royal baby’s arrival Associated Press

LONDON - Boy or Girl? Even the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are professing they will be as surprised as the rest of us. An aide to Prince William and the former Kate Middleton says Prince George is eagerly awaiting a new brother or sister later this month, though they say they don’t know which it will be. At a briefing Thursday, aides said the couple are grateful to people around the world who have wished them well. They noted with understatement they are aware the media is watching. The royal couple hope the birth will be covered “in a celebratory and dignified manner,” an aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity customary for briefings. Before the world is told, Queen Elizabeth II will be informed.
