ATV accidents show need for helmets Two ATV users were injured in separate accidents on Saturday, April 4 at the Lake Koocanusa mudbogs. A 19-year-old male from Nelson was tended to by medical services when he lost control of his ATV. He attempted to jump off of the ATV

and was ultimately crushed when it rolled on top of him. “It was originally our belief he had sustained serious injuries but once police and ambulance arrived on scene, we found that he sustained no life-threatening injuries, just minor injuries

www.kootenayadvertiser.com 3 to his head and chest,” said Cranbrook Staff Sgt. Dave Dubnyk. Due to the roughness of the mudbogs, a helicopter had to be used to evacuate the patient at approximately 6:30 p.m. Cranbrook Search and Rescue (CBKSAR) assisted by blocking off traffic to the helicopter. A second ATV user, a female in her mid to late 20s was packed up in an ambulance after sustain-

ing head and neck injuries when she went over her handlebars.

The female patient was transported by ambulance to hospital.

Director of the CBKSAR board and search manager Nick

Bedwell said the people injured were not wearing helmets.

Butt Out at the Tamarack Centre today Join Tamarack Centre (1500 Cranbrook Street North, Cranbrook, BC) as they launch their

Butt Out campaign to reduce harmful cigarette waste and create a healthier community.

Meeting of the Board

The Butt Out campaign aims to reduce tobacco related litter in an effort to keep the environment free of toxic waste with a three-step program. Cigarette waste is a leading polluter. Cigarettes leach chemicals that are poisonous to

wildlife and contaminate our water sources, which is why Tamarack Centre is stepping up in hopes of fixing the problem. The Butt Out campaign asks community members to help reduce waste by collecting cigarette butts from

their homes, offices, restaurants and places of business. “It’s sad to see how wildlife can be attracted to foreign items like cigarette butts thinking it is food, especially when you consider the act of tossing the butt to the ground is 100% avoidable,” said Ken Johnson Head of Habitat Asset Management Ducks Unlimited Canada. Tamarack Centre hopes to see a positive impact on the environment and the Cranbrook community with the Butt Out campaign. Items that people should

be on the lookout for are: extinguished cigarettes, cigarette filters, inner foil packaging, and outer plastic packaging. Additionally, the mall has organized a ‘butt pick-up day’ set for Monday, April 13th 2015 for community members who want to get involved. From 10 am until 3 pm on the 13th Tamarack Centre administration staff will be on site to receive cigarette waste from the community. To help with collections, Tamarack Centre is offering the first 100 people who drop by with cigarette waste a $5 Tim Horton’s card.

“With the Butt Out campaign, we hope to see the Cranbrook community come together and support us in cleaning up our environment,” said Linda Birch, Manager of Tamarack Centre. “If everyone simply takes a few seconds out of their day to notice the litter and pick it up, it will make a huge difference.” For more information on how to get involved, call the Tamarack administration office at 250-426-2231, and to join the cigarette brigade by visiting: www. tamarackcentre.ca.

The Weekday View

Opinion: RCMP - credit where credit’s due by Brian Coombs Your job may not be the most life-affirming, soul-uplifting walk though a rose garden, but there is something you can be thankful for—someone else is doing the police work. In the first week of April, the Cranbrook detachment, the Cranbrook/Kimberley Crime Reduction Unit as well as the Cranbrook Police Dog Service, were able to arrest Cody Kenneth Bauer of Calgary and Kristopher Goerzen of Brooks. Both have been charged with the first degree murder of Nick Lush. While the local RCMP described the arrest as being “without incident”, it is difficult to imagine a job where taking possible murderers into custody could be characterized in such moderate terms. This is a tough, tough job, especially when there is often underlying resentment of the RCMP. Let’s face it, the RCMP are often criticized for various actions and activities and sometimes it is deserved. The Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women reports have leveled allegations that the police force seemed reluctant or unable due to budget concerns,

to investigate fully. A Cranbrook officer was recently ordered to stand trial for discharging his firearm at a vehicle that had a person in it. That person was wanted for car-jacking, but the incident was seen as serious enough for the officer to go to trial. And of course, the common lament heard from people stopped for speeding or reckless driving, “Why don’t the RCMP concentrate on real criminals instead of me?” But that is all part of the job. Most RCMP support diligence and oversight from government and public organizations into how they do their work because the majority are true public servants. While being brave enough to arrest possible murderers gains plenty of positive media attention for the force, it is worthwhile to take a moment and consider actions the RCMP do to keep our society functioning. When a neighbour ignores your request to tone the party down at 2 a.m. on a week night, it is good to know there is someone you can call to make that happen. When a drunk is weaving down the highway in front of you, seeing them stopped further ahead by a police car

gives a feeling of vindication. When a domestic dispute has gotten way out of hand, there is comfort in knowing that there is someone out there who will get between the parties and in some cases, save a life. Then there is the public education that the RCMP does as a community service, the Cops for Kids program that helps kids in medical or traumatic crisis, and all the groups and local aid organizations that have a participating RCMP member. There are bad people out there. There are people who would rather take from you than work for themselves and there are people who believe that they have the right to trod on your privacy and quality of life just for fun. There are also people who murder. Living in a civilized society means that some individuals will take advantage of the majority’s peaceful nature. It is because of this fact that Canada has a nation-wide police system that serves to enforce rules that we, as a voting populace, have said we want. And locally, just in case the Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP haven’t been told lately, thank you. You are appreciated.

The Cranbrook Western Financial Group hosted the Pink the Rink event back in February to raise awareness and funds for local anti-bullying initiatives. The event was hosted at Western Financial Place during the Kootenay Ice game on February 20th. Western Financial Group sold pink pucks to be tossed onto the ice during the second intermission. In total, the event raised $1,595.00 and now Western Financial Group has donated $500 each to the Kootenay Christian Academy, Steeples School, Highlands School and Jaffray School. Construction Question Why are you asking a realtor construction questions?

by Menno Dueck A realtor is “a person who acts as an agent for the sale and purchase of buildings and land” as defined by a recent Google search. Nowhere have I found the definition of a realtor to include providing advice on renovations of residential and commercial buildings, including searches on the BC and Canadian real estate association websites. Buying real estate, particularly residential, usually brings along an emotional element. We get excited visualizing our family moving in, picking paint colors, and even placement of furniture; nesting is good. Quickly on the heels of picturing ourselves in the house comes the “awesome part”. Wouldn’t it be awesome…if we took out that wall, if we put in a bigger window over there, if we extended the deck, if we added a car port, if we made a master bathroom out of the third bedroom…and on, and on and on! The “awesome” possibilities are endless! Gerri asked her realtor if the wall between the kitchen and dining room could be removed to give more of an open concept feeling. “Shouldn’t be a problem” her realtor said. By the time Gerri got home “shouldn’t be a problem” became “not a problem” and by the time she was talking with her coffee gal pals it was now “simply take out that wall”. Unfortunately, that wall turned out to be the main bearing wall and definitely was not a simple (or inexpensive) task to remove. It’s great to daydream about renovation possibilities, but daydream with someone who knows construction, someone who knows what is possible and what is not. Buying and selling is a realtor’s expertise; renovations are not. Find a knowledgeable and reputable contractor to walk through the property with you, ask your questions about bearing walls, building codes, structure, etc., and brainstorm ideas. At the end of the day, when you put in your offer to purchase you should go in with your eyes wide open on price point AND possibilities. My advice to home buyers, have a team of experts ready….realtor, contractor, inspector. Ask lots of questions but make sure you are asking the right person! Wouldn’t Gerri have been better off knowing prior to the purchase that what she wanted was possible but not simple? Past articles are posted on DueckEnterprises.com under Blog. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and indomethacin are thought to hold the best of both worlds. They reduce inflammation and pain very effectively. There is good evidence, however, that chronic use of NSAISs may actually make arthritis and pain worse in the long run. The body creates inflammation to help stimulate the healing process. In fact, without inflammation, soft tissue healing is limited. When a joint is injured or worn do to use and age, the body releases hormones called prostaglandins which in turn increase the diameter of blood vessels in non-injured tissues. This allows healthy blood vessels to increase blood flow and bring immune cells to the injured area to begin the repair process. Using antiinflammatory medications blocks the release of the prostaglandins, preventing increased blood flow to the injured area and thus limiting the ability of immune cells to accumulate and heal. In numerous studies, NSAIDs have been found to effectively reduce pain while slowing and reducing the healing response. A 1995 study found that 47% of people with osteoarthritis who used NSAIDs had radiographic arthritic progression while in the control group (no

NSAIDs) only 22% showed x-ray signs of disease progression. In 1985 a study published in the journal Lancet found that NSAIDs were associated with the progressive formation of bone cysts and bone thinning. Researchers in Norway conducted a double blind, placebo controlled study that found over a 3 year period that NSAIDs contributed to overall joint deterioration. The LINK study in England compared knee deterioration over 3 years and found that NSAIDs increased the rate of radiological deterioration of osteoarthritic knees. In fact, the deterioration was so great that the study was stopped prematurely. In 2005 Dutch researchers found that people using NSAIDs had 3 times the progression of knee arthritis and 2 times the progression of hip arthritis. NSAIDs have been repeatedly found to speed the deterioration of joints and should be used as little as possible in the management of osteoarthritis. The use of restorative injection techniques like prolotherapy, PRP and neural prolotherapy along with acupuncture and natural medicines that reduce inflammation and pain should be considered. These approaches reduce pain and encourage joint healing.
