Campbell River man stabbed in the face
A Campbell River man was stabbed in the face last week outside of Cedar Elementary. Campbell River RCMP attended the 200 block of Dogwood Street near 7-11 at 9:59 p.m. on Monday, April 6 to find a 52-year-old man with a large laceration to his right cheek requiring medical attention. BC Ambulance Service transported the male to Campbell River General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Investigators learned the assault occurred on the school grounds of Cedar school at 261

Cedar Street and the motive behind the stabbing appeared to be robbery. As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old Campbell River man was identified as the person responsible and on Wednesday, April 8 at 12:25 p.m. that male was taken into custody and transported to Campbell River RCMP Detachment cells. He was expected to make his first appearance in Campbell River Provincial Court last Thursday morning to answer to charges of Robbery and Aggravated Assault.
Strathcona Regional District Chair Jim Abram has presided over a number of protests of service cuts, fare increases and general management of B.C.’s coastal ferries system in recent years. So the casual passerby could be forgiven for thinking the old lion had been tamed last Friday during a rally outside the annual Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) annual general meeting in Comox. “Rather than just a protest rally, which we’ve had a number of, we decided to have a rally in

support of AVICC and UBCM (the Union of BC Municipalities) for doing the work of the provincial government, which they shouldn’t have had to do but did because the provincial government didn’t do it.” Abram was referring to a 93-page socio-economic impact analysis prepared for UBCM and presented to UBCM during its annual meeting last September. That analysis indicated that, had the government and the quasi-private BC Ferries Corporation simply raised fares by the rate of inflation each year since Continued on Pg.5

Compost Centre opens today “The opening of the Compost Education Centre in April means that the prime gardening season is just around the corner,” said on-site educator Elaine Jansen. “Spending time in the garden is not only for adults, it is about getting the whole family involved and that is the primary focus of our programs and events.” The CSWM service encourages elementary, middle and high schools, and community groups to make arrangements with Jansen to bring students or members to the centre for an environmentallyfocused and interactive learning session. The hours of operation for the Compost Education Centre are Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. For more information on the Compost Education Centre in Campbell River, visit www.comox-
valleyrd.ca/composting The Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) service is a function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer sta-
tions and smaller wastehandling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District. The CSWM service manages more than 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.
The Compost Education Centre opens today with a presentation tonight at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

Duns’ journey brings her to the Mirror
Publisher Dave Hamilton is pleased to announce that Jacquie Duns will be joining the Campbell River Mirror’s sales staff. Duns began her journey in the newspaper world at the CourierIslander in 1999 as a single mother. She began in office administration. She learned in short order that she fit well in the industry and after three years of office work, her publisher decided she needed to
spread her wings and gave her an opportunity to experience the sales side of the business. Duns enjoyed the challenge and before long she moved to the sales department as a full-time Sales Consultant. Her career at the Courier-Islander brought many blessings, the most important being that she met and married her husband, Allen Duns of Coastline Mazda and they expanded their family
to include two more daughters. Her favourite part of working in the newspaper industry is the relationships she’s built over the years. With the closing of the paper came the end of a chapter in Duns’ life. She will miss her Courier-Islander family but very much looks forward to embracing this new chapter and family at the Campbell River Mirror and getting back to doing what she loves.
Jacquie Duns has joined the Mirror’s sales staff.

Rally: province urged to revive BC Ferries
Continued from Pg.2
2003, “instead of the outrageous 4.9 per cent annually,” he said, they would have raised $2.3 billion for the provincial economy. “They cut service, raised fares, and it did exactly what we told them would happen,” Abram said. “Ridership is lower than it’s been since 1992.” Clearly, this is not a kinder, gentler Abram. But in addition to the usual complement of signs among the dozens involved in Friday’s rally — “Grim ferry tales” and “Coastal communities are sinking” — were many designed to provide an atta-boy to the 57 local governments that make up AVICC. Such as “Thank you, AVICC” and “Local government rocks!” Those local governments, col le c t ively, renewed their call for the Liberal government to take three steps to revive a ferry system Abram said no longer works for residents or visitors: reduce fares, restore service cuts in the last two

years, and place management of BC Ferries back into the ministry of transportation. It was the same call made by UBCM last fall in a virtually unprecedented — and non-binding — vote. “Everything that happened there with BC Ferries was unanimous,” said Abram. “We never get unanimous votes at UBCM; it’s almost unheard-of. “A lot of those people are coming from places that don’t have a shoreline. But they understand what fairness is. They know you don’t treat one system one way and another system another way.”
Cancelling the Coastal Ferries Act and making ferries part of transportation infrastructure, he said, would mean it is treated like all other infrastructure — without the board of directors, ferry authority and commissioner currently in place. “And you don’t have over 400 high-paid executives running the system,” he added. ence, said his NDP government would tear up the Coastal Ferries Act upon taking office. But when Abram strode to the microphone to ask if the NDP would put ferries back into transportation, Horgan gave a double-edged answer, saying his government would explore putting ferries into the ministry of transportation, but also explore making it a Crown corporation. “He told me, ‘You get two answers, Jim,’” said Abram. “I said, ‘That’s great. We want one.’”
Abram said he was pleased that attendees at least got a reasonably solid commitment from Horgan to a ferry system that works. He was just as pleased that those who attended the pro-AVICC ferries rally managed to hold up through high winds, heavy precipitation and cold temperatures that raked the Comox Valley during their stand. “Ev e r y o n e s t ay e d there,” he said. “And we managed to keep the signs upright and keep the people upright.”

Our View
Playoff hockey returns home Playoff hockey is returning to Canada in a big way. After the pain of the previous National Hockey League season when only the Montreal Canadiens made the post-season, the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, the Habs and the Ottawa Senators will all bring playoff excitement to the streets of their respective cities. In Winnipeg, where they haven’t seen playoff action since the Jets left town to become the Coyotes, they were already partying in the streets Thursday night when Calgary defeated the Kings to clinch it for Manitoba We say: It’s good hockey fans. Only the Leafs and to see Canadian Oilers failed to make teams back in it, after Ottawa came on Saturday the Stanley Cup through with a win against Philaplayoffs delphia to clinch a playoff berth. Unfortunately it may be “next year” for a few more seasons in Toronto and Edmonton. However it’s one thing to be excited about heading into the playoffs and it’s another to even consider the Stanley Cup coming north of the border for the first time since 1993, when the Montreal Canadiens won their 24th Cup. At this juncture it’s anybody’s guess who will win it, although Montreal has to be considered the favourite amongst the True North Strong and Free contingent. We do know that either Calgary or Vancouver will advance to the second round because they play each other. Other than that it’s anybody’s guess and that’s what makes the second season so exciting, it really is a crapshoot and if things fall into place and a team gets on a roll....... Go, Canada, go.
Letters n Councillor concerned over traffic bedlam has a point I believe Councillor Larry Samson brings up a valid point. I still see traffic making left-hand turns from 11th Ave. onto Dogwood St., and also left-hand turns onto the city bypass from the White Spot-Tim Horton’s complex. Both locations have concrete meridians in place to prevent this from happening, but with some people you simply cannot fix stupid. A concrete meridian in front of the new development probably will not totally prevent left-hand turns, but at least it will be a good deterrent. Otherwise, it will certainly be a location waiting for a tragedy to happen. Gary Hessler Campbell River

Where there’s a will, there’s a way
So, that’s what they mean by “political will”. First, officials in Campbell River and the Comox Valley won’t bid to host the 55+ BC Games. Then they will. The serve-and-volley last week, both at Campbell River Council table and between the communities’ officials, was worthy of a 55+ games badminton or tennis final. Earlier this year, Campbell River was extended an invitation to bid on hosting the annual summer sports competition, formerly known as the BC Seniors Games, in either 2017, 2018 or 2019. The city lacks the facilities to house all the sports, so rec and culture manager Lynn Wark contacted her counterpart at Comox Valley Regional District about the chance the two regions could jointly host the games, as they did in 2010. Based on input from recreation managers in Campbell River, Courtenay, Cumberland and the CVRD in a meeting last year, the consensus was that bidding on another games

And while the last week’s political machinations have a particularly top-down feel, it will fall to the rank-and-file to handle the logistics of those thousands of visiting competitors. That was part of the concern of the recreational staffers in the region when they recommended against attempting another hosting effort so soon after the 2010 games. But a realistic look at the calendar shows there is time to plan, prepare and recruit. Nobody has to slap it together by this summer — the bids are for the years 2017 through 2019, meaning as many as nine years between games for the region. If Campbell River and Courtenay together cannot rally residents to the cause in that time frame, then, indeed, they should not be hosting a major provincial competition. But precedent shows the communities are fully capable of coming together to make for a memorable and well-run 55+ BC Games sometime in the next two to four years. After all, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Naturopathic cancer care and research I recently attended a wonderful lecture given by Dr. Neil McKinney N.D. on Naturopathic Support for Cancer patients. He is a colleague of mine who has had a specialized naturopathic practice in cancer care for the past 15 years in Victoria. With April being “Daffodil Month” it is a time of year when cancer is the focus in the media. I just wanted to bring you up to date about several cancer support organizations in this country where cancer patients can seek complementary health care and support that is safe to use during traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well as long term prevention of cancer recurrence. The focus of Dr. McK-
inney’s lectures was based on the newest additions to his book “Naturopathic Oncology, An Encyclopedic Guide for Patients and Physicians.” He explains mechanisms of the most common cancer types and then matches natural therapeutics that will target these same mechanisms. Human studies have not been done on these natural remedies and every cancer type but, by matching up these mechanisms, oncologists and naturopathic physicians are seeing their patient outcomes improve. There is a naturopathic physician based forum where experiences with cancer patients are shared to improve this data base: www.oncanp.org I also wanted to

active research department that could test and demonstrate the benefits of using complementary and integrative care for cancer. Q: What is the Mission Statement of OICC? Dr.S: Our mission is to provide evidenceinformed integrative and preventative cancer care, research, and education across the spectrum of prevention to survivorship. The OICC is a flagship model interdisciplinary centre that provides whole-person integrative care to people with cancer, cancer survivors, and those seeking cancer prevention. Q: What types of cancers do you see mostly in your centre? Dr. S: We see all types of cancer, however breast, colorectal and lung cancer are in the majority, with breast being by far the largest (roughly 30 per cent). Q: What initiatives do you have for cancer prevention research? Dr. S: We do synthesis research on specific natural health products such as coriolus versicolor (mushroom extract), vitamin D and curcumin in order to see how these may enhance the immune system and reduce
inflammation, both key agents to address for cancer prevention. Q: As some patients tell their physicians: “I have had a healthy lifestyle most of my life: I exercise, I eat right, I have never smoked nor drank very much. Why did I get cancer? How could I possibly have prevented this cancer?” What do you tell your patients at OICC? Dr. S: I make it very clear to my patients that cancerous cells exist in ALL of us, and that despite all best efforts to prevent it, we cannot always control the mechanisms that may, at times, regardless of the positive inputs we implement, go astray, sometimes purely by accident. Q: I have friends and family who want to donate to preventive cancer research in Canada. What avenue do you have at OICC to help funnel this type of funding? Is there any research currently underway in this category? Dr. S: We are a notfor-profit organization with a research focus that comprises clinical trials and synthesis research in cancer care. organization can specify their desire to put their support towards our research facility. As mentioned earlier, there is indeed research underway already with plans to do much more. Q: What are you most proud of since the start of OICC? Dr. S: I am most proud of the clinicians and researchers whose integrity and passion who are making the OICC a true flagship for whole-person cancer care and that are providing phenomenal care to our patients. I am also proud of our affiliation and governance from CCNM for having the vision to support our endeavour. Q: I don’t live in Ottawa, so what local resources do I have for cancer care on Vancouver Island? Dr.S: Inspire Health is one of our partners and they are located in B.C., (Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna). Their model of care is comparable to ours and provides the kind of whole person care we offer at the OICC. They are undertaking Vitamin D research right now. There are also Naturopathic Doctors on Vancouver Island who have a specialty in cancer care: see www. oncanp.org Dr. Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.DrPincott.com

Quarter million in scholarships up for grabs Interested in attending North Island College (NIC)? Apply for your share of $250,000 in NIC Foundation scholarships and bursaries. Awards of up to $2,500 are now available to eligible entering and continuing NIC students based on their academic performance, financial need, career interests, and community involvement via a single online application. In the last 10 years, the NIC Foundation has worked with North Island families, companies, organizations, and charities to provide $1.95 million to nearly 3,000 carpenters, electricians, cooks, welders, accountants, nurses, educational assistants, small business owners, artists, tourism providers, and university studies students across the region. The money represents a significant investment in North Island students and communities and addresses a tangible need. Last year, 330 students received a total of $260,000 for tuition, books, and liv-
ing expenses. Jessie Shannon spent a decade working as a registered midwife throughout Canada, but wanted to diversify her skills and focus on social policy and health promotion. To accomplish this change, she chose NIC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for its focus on global and Indigenous health, active political nursing groups, and small class sizes. While Shannon still works as a midwife in Nunavut during the summer months, she
.
relies on scholarships she received over four years at NIC to set her up for success. “The initial bursary relieved my financial stress and provided me with incentive to work hard on my academic grades,” Shannon said. “I was able to focus on my studies, maintain high grades, and get more involved in nursing projects at school and in the community, which made me a candidate to earn additional bursaries and scholarships.” She received the
Soroptimist International Club of Courtenay Bursary in 2012, the Ivan and Laura Cronsberry Bursary in 2013, and the Rotary Club of Courtenay Vancouver Foundation Scholarship in 2014. To contribute, or establish a new award, contact Erin Petersen at 250-334-4039. Students can apply for scholarships and bursaries before April 30, 2015. SRD slams local government auditor KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The Strathcona Regional District board is writing a letter to the province, urging it to scrap the auditor general for local government, a position that directors called a “complete failure.” The board’s comments come on the heels of the firing of Basia Ruta, B.C.’s local government auditor, who was accused of “obstruction” by the minister responsible for the department. Campbell River Director Larry Samson said the City of Campbell River witnessed firsthand the ineptitude of the auditor general. “This to me has been a complete failure by the provincial government,” Samson said. “Campbell River has gone through two audits by this department and
both have been a fail- work environment and ure. The first audit they lack of performance went through, we spent from that office.” Ruta’s work had been countless staff time with the auditors going called into question over our procurement after a review found and then there was a she had only completed two audits staff change, of local they came THEY SAID gove r n back a year or two later ments in IT: “This to and did it all the three me has been over again – ye ar s a complete again, more s i n c e failure.” staff time her posi– Larry Samson, tion was and more Campbell River e s t a b cost to the Director lished by city. “And now the prethey’ve fired mier. the auditor general for Area D Director local government all of Brenda Leigh said she a sudden.” couldn’t understand Minister of Commu- why the position was nity, Sport and Cultural created in the first place. “I always thought that Development Coralee Oakes said Ruta was of all levels of governremoved from her post ment most responsible because her “obstruc- with public funds it is tion of an intended the local government,” review of her office Leigh said. “I was really has created an intoler- surprised when they set able situation that com- up this special auditor pounds the unstable for local government

because they should be looking at themselves. They just wasted $5 million on this failed attempt at an auditor for local government and they should look in the mirror. “I’m not saying leave local government alone, maybe there is a reason to go in and audit some local governments but they’re just not being responsible with public money when they’re going after local governments,” Leigh added. “We all have our own audits. The SRD has had a clean audit every year from our own auditors which we pay for, so why do we need another one?” Area C Director Jim Abram said the implementation of the auditor general seemed like another attack on local government. “It seems we have had an incredible amount of attention paid to local

I don’t get it. There’s a lot of things that just don’t make sense.” Campbell River Director Charlie Cornfield said he didn’t agree with the auditor general for local government since day one because the position seemed redundant. “The Inspector of Municipalities for local government deals with us, they’re the appropriate area to look after local government,” Cornfield said. “There just needs to be some tweaks. They just need to scrap this whole thing as a failed attempt and a waste of money.”

WWII slideshow to commemorate liberation of Netherlands J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
When Pieter Koeleman approached the Museum at Campbell River for help supporting the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of World War II, he found a welcome audience. “We’re a social history museum, said Ken Blackburn, the museum’s director of public programs. “The relationship between the Netherlands and Canada is extremely close. Any time Pieter comes to us we’re going to do what we can do. The Museum at Campbell River will host a slideshow of WWII-era images from the Netherlands April 28-30, in advance of the May 5 anniversary celebration downtown. Then, five years ago, he helped Blackburn coordinate the display of a travelling exhibit assembled by the Dutch consulate in advance of the 65th anniversary celebration. A similar traveling exhibit has been created this year, “But they were booked someplace else and were not available to us, said Blackburn. So Koeleman secured digital images of the exhibit’s 23 photo panels, then visited the archives of Canada’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs and gathered almost 30 more black-and-white wartime images from The Netherlands. He has combined them into a 52-slide PowerPoint presentation that will run from 2-4 p.m. each day April 28-30, then again in a single showing at the museum May 5 that Koeleman will introduce and narrate. The images show troops in the Dutch countryside following the D-Day invasion of 1944, as the allies fought their way toward Berlin. Additional images from 1945 show the response of residents during the actual liberation, with army tanks and trucks draped with dozens of cheering, flag-waving people. As the bulk of the U.S. and British forces made their way east to Berlin, Koeleman says, western

The parade will travel to 11th Ave., on to Shopper’s Row, then take the 10th Ave. entrance into Tyee Plaza and its finish at Spirit Square. In a ceremony reminiscent of Remembrance Day, wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph amid speeches, prayer and the playing of the Canadian and Dutch national anthems. Sybil Andrews’ linocut “Wings” will adorn the cake at Sunday’s commemoration of Sybil Andrews Day.
City fêtes Sybil The community is invited to the Sybil Andrews Cottage on Sunday, April 19, from 2-4 p.m. in celebration of Sybil Andrews Day. The City of Campbell River declared in 2007 that annually April 19 would be officially recognized as Sybil Andrews Day in celebration of her birth in Bury St. Edmonds in 1898. This Sunday the community is welcome at the Cottage (at 2131 South Island Highway in Willow Point) for tea, coffee and cake, hosted by the Campbell River Arts Council and the Sybil Andrews Heritage Society. Sybil Andrews is a community treasure. Andrews was a graduate of the Grosvenor School of Art in England, an institution world famous for its promotion of English Futurism in the 1920s and ‘30s. She was an early practitio-
ner of linocut printing, a controversial medium championed by the Grosvenor School. She moved with her husband Walter Morgan to Campbell River in 1947. She taught art and music in her home for 40 years. Today, her linocut prints are sought-after internationally and have reached record prices. The Sybil Andrews Cottage was the first property to be put on the Campbell River Heritage Registry and is managed today by the Arts Council. Some prints from Sybil’s collection donated to the Museum in the early 1990s will be on hand for viewing. The cake image this year is ‘Wings’, a linocut purchased by the Arts Council in the 1980s. Bring the family for cake and conversation Sunday and learn more about an international artist who made Campbell River her home.

Fishing Corner April fishing can be hit and miss for those anglers getting out and if you put in the effort you will be rewarded with a nice salmon. In recent weeks, Kitty Coleman has had awesome fishing and the winter springs can go anywhere from 9 to 20 pounds but there can be exceptions. Brenda Stobbart caught a 9, 22 and 24 pound salmon using 50 50 spoons and a green chartreuse special back hoochie. There have been killer whales spotted at Miracle Beach and Brenda reports that fishing was just awesome. 2 weeks ago I was in Sayward and some anglers who were coming in to Kelsey Bay said the weather was too ugly but they managed to set some prawn traps. There have been good

local fish catch reports for halibut in the areas north of Campbell River and already catches of 30 and 45 pound halibut have come in. Water levels in local rivers are clear and low and steelhead fishing will be good to fair over the next 2 weeks. Most anglers will be out casting pink rubber worms or spoons. On the fly, big bright colored flies are being used. Many
anglers will drift a river knowing the turns and where the log jams are located. High water levels over the winter can move trees and debris around and the river can change the location of many pools which make them difficult to get to. Brian Martin from the Vancouver Island Fish Hatchery in Duncan told me last week that a number of lakes north of Campbell River are not stocked

because of the low fishing pressure and some lakes are. Keta Lake near Sayward was last stocked in 2006. Nerrisa Bowens from Campbell River hooked a nice 4 pound plus cutthroat trout at Roberts Lake trolling a wedding band. The fish was caught and released. Roberts Lake has had high water in the past month and the trout were biting right off the dock. The bite has just come on at Roberts Lake and catches of 2 pound trout are coming in. Last Sunday a number of anglers were out in full force at Echo, Maple and Spider Lakes. I found that May will be the best month to fish in the spring. Upper elevation lakes will be fishing better in weeks to come as the weather is still cool and the bug hatch is yet to happen.

Storm look to make history
This weekend the Campbell River Storm travel to Cold Lake, Alberta and attempt to do something that no other Vancouver Island team has ever done – win the Keystone Cup. It’s a daunting task but the Storm has some history on its side. First off, B.C. teams have dominated the We s t e r n C a n a d i a n Junior B Finals recently, winning the Keystone three years in a row and five out of the last six times. Secondly, Campbell River is the only VIJHL squad to ever make it to the goldmedal game, losing 3-2 in overtime to the Red Deer Vipers when the tournament was held here in 2006. The locals also won a bronze medal in 1999. In addition, the Storm is in the midst of an

incredible postseason roll. Their record is 16-1 since the playoffs began on Feb. 18, including a four game sweep of the Victoria Cougars in the VIJHL final, and an undefeated showing at the Cyclone Taylor Cup Provincial Championship held earlier this month in Mission. “It’s been an exceptional run,” concedes Storm head coach and general manager Lee Stone. “We’ve done a really good job this year of just taking one game at a time. Up 2-0 or 3-0 in a series, it was almost irrelevant. The goal always was, ‘let’s win this period, let’s win this game.’ “That’s part of the reason we’ve been able to go 16-1 — with our talent, skill, and work ethic, when we focus on one period at a time we’re
pretty hard to beat.” The Storm opens the six-team Keystone Cup with a pair of games on opening day. Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. (10:30 local time), the locals face off against the Saskatchewan Champion Saskatoon Quakers, and then take on the host Cold Lake Ice at 9 that night. “From what I gather Saskatoon has a couple of real good players,” says Stone. “Forward Vukie Mpofu and defenceman Cody Pettapiece are both high-end Junior ‘B’ guys. Vukie played for Red Deer in the WHL last year as a 17-year-old. That will be a real good challenge for us right off the hop. When we play Cold Lake we’ll have to keep an eye on Devon Hascarl.

The top two teams from round-robin play advance to the gold medal game at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Storm captain Jordan Rauser admits that’s a lot of hockey in a short period of time, but is optimistic about his team’s chances. “When you play five games in three days it’s not going to be easy,” he says. “But we’re going to focus on playing our game and not worry about what the other teams are doing. Our speed is our biggest asset so we’ve just got to keep that going — moving the puck down the ice as quickly as possible and creating scoring chances.”
The Keystone will be a homecoming of sorts for rugged Storm forward Reece Costain, who grew up in Alberta. “I’m looking forward to it,” says the Edmonton native. “We had a couple of provincial games in

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK A volunteer action is like a stone thrown in a lake: its effect has a direct impact. At the same time, like ripples, volunteer efforts reach out far and wide to improve communities. Undeniably, volunteers rock. National Volunteer Week (NVW) is a time to recognize, celebrate and thank Canada’s volunteers. NVW 2015 takes place April 12-18. Findings from Volunteer Canada and Investors Group’s 2013 Volunteer Recognition Study indicated that many volunteers appreciate a genuine thank you. Whether it is with words highlighting the impact of a volunteers’ contribution or a small personalized token, a custom and sincere thanks makes a difference.

Congratulations to these Volunteers and thank you for your Good Deeds in the community! NOLA CONRAD Campbell River Meals on Wheels (April 2014 Winner) Nola has volunteered with us since 2004 and due to her long time with us she has gotten to know many of our clients and has become in tuned with their habits and personalities. Her awareness (and quick thinking) of one clients normal manner led her to determine medical help was needed one day. She managed to get an ambulance to him since he had suffered a stroke. HAROLD (HARRY) MATHEW Campbell River Child Care Society (May 2014 Winner) Harry has been an enduring resource for all chronic and emergent maintenance issues in three childcare facilities over 30+ years. Harry’s skills have allowed him no rest from cries for help over leaking taps, overflowing toilets, clogged roof drains, drafty doors, etc. PHILLIP DUNN John Howard Society NI. – Kidstart (June 2014 Winner) Phillip has been an exceptional mentor for Tristan over the past year. He has spent over 500 hours supporting, guiding, role modeling and encouraging Tristan to do his best. Phillip also volunteered to chaperone Tristan’s school trip to Vancouver in October. RONALD MURTON The Salvation Army (July 2014 Winner) Ron is there every weekday (1000 hours per year.) He always has a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his lips as he serves up his special brand of wisdom with every meal. He simply and truly cares about the people he serves. MARY CARSTAIRS Campbell River Meals on Wheels (August 2014 Winner) Mary has been with Meals on Wheels since 2007. She is a dependable force, with a warm personality that current clients and returning clients are thankful to see on Thursdays. She has helped many clients, fighting with independence at home, return their service in times of tragedies as spouse passing away or a failing body. JONATHAN SHEAD John Howard Society NI. – Kidstart (September 2014 Winner) Jonathan is Kidstart’s longest standing mentor who has committed hundreds of hours to his mentee through weekly visits, supporting, role-modelling and encouraging his mentee to be his best. As result of Johnathan’s visits, his mentee has gained more self-confidence.
DARLENE HAWES Transition Society (October 2014 Winner) Darlene is the president of the Board of Directors of the Transition Society and so much more. She is will to volunteer for pretty much anything that is asked for. She works long hours for their main fundraiser “River Fest” always comes up with great ideas to help fundraise and support the organization, and always advocates their praises. AMBER ZIRNHELT John Howard Society NI. – Kidstart (November 2014 Winner) Amber is a volunteer mentor who dedicates 4-5 hours each week to her mentee. Amber’s mentee’s mother said that Amber is making a hugely positive impact on her daughter “Having a strong and confidant role-model that she can identify with is wonderful”. Amber has been able to make a positive impact on her mentee’s life through her gift of time and friendship. MARILYN EVANS Campbell River Meals on Wheels (December 2014 Winner) Upon her first, solo day on the job, Marilyn was thrown into an intense situation. She came upon a client in medical distress. Her quick, calm thinking and training had her calling 911 and staying with the client until the ambulance arrived and the senior was sent to the hospital. Going above and beyond her regular duties! GALE ANSON Volunteer Campbell River (January 2015 Winner) Gale went above and beyond normal duties of vice president by overseeing events and office duties. She contributes at least 200% in additional monthly hours and made incredible inroads in to raising the profile of the organization in the community. COLETTE BOUCHARD Cameryn’s Cause (February 2015 Winner) Colette pours her heart and creativity in to making Cameryn’s Cause’s Spring Gala a one of a kind event that is their biggest fundraiser of the year. She does such a great job that they sold out of the tickets in the first hour. TOM STAUFFER Beacon Club (March 2015 Winner) After the Beacon Club’s roof was destroyed by a storm, Tom came up with a new design for the roof, a list of materials needed and quotes on cost. He got local businesses to give discounts, borrowed tools from friends and recruited his son to help. He also led members in a patio renovation.
We would like to acknowledge member organizations, the Campbell River Mirror, Investor’s Group and the City of Campbell River for support of this project! Contact 250-287-8111 to nominate a volunteer for their Good Deed!

Kicking off a new season of kickball
The buzz has already started over the start of the fourth season of the adult kickball league. “Last year, six teams participated for the coveted championship, and the Campbell River Recreation Department is hoping the popularity of last season will help the league grow to eight or more teams this year,” says recreation programmer and league coordinator Jen Furst. The season begins on Thursday, May 7 with games running until the end of June. Games
are held between 7 and 9 p.m. at Pinecrest Park. “This fun sport is a combination of baseball, soccer and dodge ball and is fun for any adult looking to get some exercise, meet other people and be outside playing,” Furst adds. “The sport is growing in popularity across North America as it provides an alternative to conventional sports and brings out the child in everyone.” Also known as California kickball, the game is played on a

Local rink to contend for Pacific Cup
Campbell River Curling Club will be represented when provincial and international curling bragging rights are on the line April 15-19 at the Richmond Curling Centre. The 16th Annual Pacific International Cup features club curling championship teams from all over British Columbia, along with teams from the Yukon, eight U.S. states, Australia, New Zealand, and for the first time—Brazil. The Pacific International Cup (“The PIC”) is one of the premier curling events in the world for the development of the sport at the grass-roots level. Only true “club” teams are eligible. It provides B.C. club champions, American state cham-
pions, and international club curling teams with an opportunity to showcase their skills, while fostering the social traditions of the game. The Campbell River women’s club champions, skipped by Lonnie Schopp, qualified for the PIC by winning the Island North division of the B.C. Club Challenge in March in Port Hardy. Schopp is joined by Third Cynthia Lu, Second Gayle Barnowsky, and Lead D’arcy Cato. At stake for the British Columbia men’s and women’s club champions is a chance to represent the province at the 2015 Travelers Canadian Curling Club Championship in Ottawa this November. Enid was born in Edgerton Alberta, to Phoebe (Smith) and Charles Waite, the fourth of seven children. In the late 1930’s in Terrace, BC, she met the love of her life, Peter van Stolk–recently arrived from Holland. There, after the war, Enid and Peter became trailblazers in establishing the cultivation of greenhouse grapes and tomatoes in northern BC. The family moved to Quadra Island in 1958. Enid became involved with the Quadra community teaching kindergarten, leading the Brownies/ Girl Guides and breeding Cairn terriers while maintaining the small farm in Heriot Bay. Following a move to Victoria, Enid was respected as a preschool educator. Later, she purchased and operated Hart House Retirement Home in Fairfield with cousins Georgie and Bessie. Predeceased by her husband Peter (19001984), and granddaughter Laura, she will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Betty Lee Thompson, her husband Grant and granddaughter Mia; son, Peter, his wife Doreen and grandsons Peter and Patrick; son Dan, his wife Lea and granddaughter Ali; daughter Ivy Reynolds, her husband Del and grandchildren Peter, Louanne, and great-granddaughter Alison; son Herb Frandle. She was beloved by sisters Irene Sparkes of Calgary, Alberta, Betty Lee Porter of Tulsa, Oklahoma, brother Dan and sister in law Alice Waite of Independence, Missouri. Enid was predeceased by sisters Doris Waite, Grace Jensen and brother Dr. Verne Waite. Enid was treasured and loved by many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will take place 2 pm, Saturday, May 2, 2015 at St. Stephens Church Hall, 7921 St Stephens Rd (off Mt Newton Cross Road.) The building is walker and wheelchair accessible. We encourage you to find comfort in your memories. Flowers gratefully declined. Should you wish to make a donation in her name, Enid received talking books and support from CNIB (www.cnib. ca) and held great admiration for Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org).
