Election campaigning underway for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA hopefuls STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Four candidates have been confirmed in the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake riding for the upcoming provincial election on May 5. Vying to become the riding’s next MLA are Danielle Klooster (Alberta Party), Patricia Norman (New Democratic Party), Don MacIntyre (Wildrose) and Kerry Towle (Progressive Conservative). Each candidate has been

carrying out his and her own campaigning over the past several weeks, and the group of MLA hopefuls could gather collectively for an election forum nearer the time of the vote. The Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce confirmed earlier this week it was trying to reach out to each candidate to find out which of them would be willing to participate in such an event. As of press time, no details had been confirmed.

Alberta Party Representing the Alberta Party is Danielle Klooster, a former two-term town councillor in Penhold who ran under the same banner in the 2012 provincial election. Klooster feels her political experience, combined with a solid understanding of community, makes her the ideal candidate for the role. “I understand community, I understand the econ-

omy and I understand the needs of business, so I feel like I have a really well-balanced portfolio of experience and skill that gives me a strong ability to be an effective MLA,” she said. A consultant specializing in community development, economic development and strategic business planning and development, Klooster feels the Alberta Party is the riding’s only viable alternative to the PC Party. “We have a strong vision for Alberta that’s very common sense and that’s not punitive to Albertans,” she said. “It builds on our strengths in a very sensible way. There’s no extreme things in any of our policy. “(Constituents) can either do the same thing, expecting different results, or they can vote for a new, fresh vision that has a strong idea of what Alberta can be.” New Democratic Party NDP candidate Patricia Norman also ran in the 2012 election, and says her political views and beliefs haven’t changed since that time. “I want to see education for everybody from the beginning to the end, acces-

sible day care for everybody, accessible housing, better land use and keep our environment safe and secure for all of us,” she said. Norman, a Red Deer County resident employed as a supervisor for adult individuals with cognitive disabilities in Red Deer, feels the election marks the opportunity to “give (Albertans) another chance.” “I think we’re due for a change,” she said. “Fortyfour years with Conservatives in Alberta — let’s give somebody else a chance. Change is always good.” Her familiarity with the area, she feels, makes her the choice candidate for the riding. “I am somebody who lives in the area, and has been in the area for 20-plus years,” she said. “I have a good awareness of what’s going on, and I’m not a new person with the New Democrats. I will show people out there voting that I didn’t run away.”

MacIntyre became involved in politics after deciding he could “sit on the sidelines no more.” “The big reason I jumped into this race in the first place is because I saw people being treated callously by a government that had lost compassion for Albertans,” he said. “I’m getting involved, and many other Albertans feel the same way and they’re getting involved. We have to take this province back.” MacIntyre said the platform on which he’s campaigning focuses on democracy and accountability, education, rural needs and addressing the provincial deficit. Of the lattermost, he said: “We maintain that Alberta does not have a revenue problem; the government has a spending problem. We are the only party with a plan to balance the budget without raising taxes or cutting frontline services.” The Sylvan Lake resident and NAIT alternative energy instructor said he wants to see a better Alberta for all. continued on page 3

Don MacIntyre continued from page 2 “I have six children and nine grandchildren, and I have a familial investment in seeing my Alberta prosper and be a holistic place for my family, friends and neighbours.” Progressive Conservative PC candidate Kerry Towle wants to continue the momentum she says the Central Alberta area has experienced recently. And while she’s “thankful” for the recent announcement that an urgent care centre would be funded for Sylvan Lake, she knows there’s still plenty of work to do on the project — work she’s intent on seeing through. “We had the announcement, and we’re grateful for

Kerry Towle that, but we want to make sure that it’s the right services for our community,” she said. Towle also wants to continue to ensure seniors and people in care are treated with dignity and respect, and that landowners’ property rights are protected. Her experience and accomplishments over the past three years, she feels, make her the ideal candidate to carry the riding forward. “It’s great to say that you want something — it’s a whole other thing to be able to co-operate with the government to get and achieve what we need,” she said. “We worked really hard over the last three years, and we’re on the map, but we need to keep that momentum going.”

Diary of a rookie firefighter: The importance of clean gear JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Last week I had a burst of energy which lead me to want to go to my happy place — the Fire Department. I had the perfect excuse to go there as my gear still held onto the remnants of mud that I had bravely crawled through during my first course. One of the most important things I learned in that course was to always make sure my gear is clean and in good condition. This means no rips or tears, all the yellow reflective pieces on my gear should be in good condition, my gear should fit properly, the list goes on, and of course not be caked in mud. Now, I must tell you that washing firefighter gear is not as simple as just throwing it all into a washing machine, sprinkling a store-bought detergent on it and letting the washing machine do all the work for you. Nope, you get to scrub it by hand. So there I was standing in the cleaning room at the fire department in my ‘cleaning’ clothes, which are a pair of black stretchy pants that I look completely horrible in, and a basic T-shirt, as I knew I would probably get watered down too. Reaching inside my firefighter pants, I undid the

snaps that hold the inner protective layer securely in place. This was relatively easy as these snaps weren’t caked with mud. I then started on the snaps at the bottom of the pant leg, which were mudfilled to the point where the snaps were simply glued together with mud. Despite my best efforts of separating these snaps from each other, I had to call on the aid of Chief Stuart Carde, who had to pry the bonded snaps apart with a screw driver. But it was two firefighters against the snaps, so as you may have guessed, we won the battle. This is when the fun part came of laying down the inner and outer pants on the cement floor, spraying them down with water, scrubbing the life out of them with a brush and special detergent and then rinsing everything off again. This made me realize that this was how laundry was washed before the invention of the washing machine. I was all of a sudden very grateful that I was only scrubbing mud out of my pants. About an hour later, and after I had scrubbed all the mud out of my pants, jacket, boots and gloves, I neatly hung them up to dry and was surprised at the fact that I hadn’t lost a finger nail, and

that my skin was still soft. I am glad I took the time to do this, as I didn’t have the energy to do it the next day, which also made me realize that I need to put more effort into working out more often as there is a gym available at the department. Hey, another excuse to be at my happy place. A few days later, I returned to the department to find my gear clean and dry and ready

to be put back together. Reassembling the clean pieces was much easier than disassembling dirty pieces. From this experience I am learning that being a firefighter, I have a responsibility to not only learn how to search and rescue to try and save people’s lives, I also have the responsibility of making sure my gear is clean and in good condition. I have no excuse to go into a burning

building wearing less-thansufficient gear. This could simply pose the risk of entering into a situation where I become someone needing to be rescued. I have to make sure I am prepared to not become a victim just because I neglected to clean my gear. Jasmine O’Halloran-Han is a reporter for the Sylvan Lake News and its sister publication, the Eckville Echo.

Mobile vending sites should be leased for season, not weekly Dear Editor, I have been the general manager of the Wild Rapids Water Park for 10 years, and I have been following the Pilot Mobile Vending Project issue. Last week at our management team meeting, we decided that it would be appropriate for me to respond to your article in the March 26 publication. First of all, we would mention that the businesses objecting to the pilot project feel that they have lost this battle. In fact, they have won! Sadly, it appears that our councillors and mayor don’t understand entrepreneurs with a dream or the risks that they are prepared to take to obtain that dream. The reality is that the moment that council raised the fees, the pilot project died. Anyone that knows the seasonal concession business will

know what they need to gross in order to pay costs. This in the industry is known as “the nut I have to crack.” So imagine how many hot dogs or ice cream bars you have to sell to pay $300 or $1,000 a week after a food and staff cost of 50 per cent. This does not include anything for depreciation, amortization or replacement of your equipment before making a profit. The fact is that it’s costly to set up any mobile concession, not to mention the strict Alberta Health regulations that must be adhered to. However, here is the real kicker and uncontrollable risk in beautiful Sylvan Lake: you pay your fee for a week, and for some unknown reason, you have three days of rain, but you don’t get a refund. This is a little like putting salt in the wound. I’m sure that

you realize that, operating Wild Rapids, we know exactly what that is like, since we don’t get a tax refund if no one shows up on rainy days. The fair win-win decision should have been that the locations should have been leased for the season, not weekly, and sales reported and a percentage paid weekly. This is what we do at the Water Park with our concessions, which are very easy to control and administer. Who wants a weekly revolving door anyhow? Yes it should be a percentage rent, since we are in this together and should share the weather risk. We charge 30 per cent and include everything to the operator, including all the equipment since we want them to be successful. As for locations, we think that the more the merrier since currently the tourists

who visit are not being serviced properly and in fact have little choice — for families — on Lakeshore Drive. Then we note that the Centennial Park location has been deleted from the potential vendor location list — when in fact that is where we should have two or three to service our visitors! We would love to have several on our parking lot since, in our opinion, they would complement our concessions. The fact is that mobile vending will not hurt anyone’s business if they give good service and look after the client and avoid focusing on exclusivity — which is what competition does. This would be good for everyone, including the Town. For two months a year we need an upbeat fair ground atmosphere with people walking up and down Lakeshore

selling balloons, ice cream or whatever. That would certainly bring in more people and everyone will be happy. If you have been to the Calgary Airport or any major shopping centre lately, you will notice that kiosks are all situated all over, and they don’t interfere with anyone that pays “real rent or taxes.” As a matter of fact, they help subsidize those costs. We are entrepreneurs. We support the risk takers unconditionally, and believe in those who have a dream — no matter how small. We also abhor people who favour exclusivity, favouritism and monopolies in order to maintain self-preservation. Everyone has a given right to try to be successful — not just the exclusive few. Sylvan Lake woman charged following Red Deer home invasion STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A Sylvan Lake woman was arrested following a home invasion in Red Deer April 7. Red Deer RCMP responded to the crime in progress in the city’s Kentwood neighbourhood around 5:40 a.m. Homeowners were awoken by the sound of someone in their house, and found the female suspect trying to flee with a purse and electronics along with several other items. The male homeowner confronted the female suspect, and was struck by the suspect’s brass knuckles in the ensuing struggle. Despite suffering cuts on his head, the homeowner was eventually able to restrain the suspect until police arrived on scene. Another resident of the

home was also hit by the suspect as the suspect was being restrained. Medical treatment wasn’t required by either of the victims. Police say the victims and the suspect weren’t known to one another. Red Deer RCMP responded to the scene immediately and arrested the suspect without further incident. A licence plate found in the suspect’s bag was said to have been stolen from a vehicle in the same area earlier that morning. Kristen Lee Hiebert, 29, was charged with breaking and entering, robbery with a weapon, two counts of assault with a weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of probation. She was scheduled to make a court appearance in Red Deer on Tuesday.

Transportation budget pressures behind busing fee increase 56

STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Chinook’s Edge School Division cites transportation budget challenges as the reason behind a busing fee increase for students living within 2.4 kilometres of their respective schools. The increase arrived via board motion on April 8, and will see fees rise to $300 for students whose residence lies within the 2.4-kilometre boundary. Students living on or outside the boundary won’t see any changes, while students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 living between 1.6 and 2.4 kilometres away will only pay half the amount. Superintendent Kurt Sacher in a letter to parents last week noted pressures from the provincial budget and the loss of an annual fuel subsidy were to blame for the increase. “We have worked hard as a division over the past few years to determine how best to address this burgeoning budget shortfall in

56

our transportation department,” he wrote. “In the end, after much reflection and research, we have created a basic framework which prioritizes our busing services.” He added the division has been working to come up with ways of addressing transportation budget shortfalls, and recently consulted with neighbouring divisions in a bid to help streamline services.

The Government of Alberta recently passed Bill 20 – the Municipal Government Amendment Act - in the Legislature. Bill 20 gives Alberta municipalities the ability to pass an advertising bylaw allowing them to simply post important legal notices on the municipality’s website and completely bypass their local community newspaper. These Public Notices deal with proposed bylaws or resolutions, public hearings or scheduled meetings – decisions that affect your living, your neighbourhood, and you. Would you know what is happening in your municipal district if these notices were published only online? Would you miss the issues that deserve your input if they were not delivered into your hands, published in this newspaper? Encourage your town council to maintain your right to know about the progress and management of your community. Ask them to keep public notices in your community newspaper – your audited, verified, accountable news source.

Town council considering taxi fare increase Volunteers Sharing Spirit: Building Communities

STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake town council on Monday night gave first reading to a bylaw that would see taxi rates increased in town. The town’s current taxi bylaw, which stipulates fares charged by taxis within Sylvan Lake, came into effect in 2008. Fares in town haven’t changed since then. Town staff say the only two taxi companies currently operating in town recently indi-

cated a need for an increase in fares, but didn’t agree on how large that increase should be. New rates in the bylaw — which proposes a $5 flat rate increase from $10 to $15 — arrived as the result of research carried out by town staff, as well as consultations with the two local taxi companies. The bylaw also proposes an amendment that would allow for more taxi companies to apply for taxi licence plates in town. continued on page 11

Fares could increase continued from page 10 The current bylaw states that plates may be issued only to qualified applicants with at least a year’s experience in the taxi industry prior to applying. The amendment proposes to remove that stipulation all together. The result, according to town staff, would be an enhanced opportunity for

outside taxi companies to operate in Sylvan Lake, ultimately benefitting town residents. “We’ve had a lot of comments and complaints that cabs just aren’t available in Sylvan Lake, and (people) are waiting for hours,” said licensing inspector Rae-Anne Ornella. “This is to open it up to other companies that have expressed interest.”

Fruitfulness in times of Uncertainty

With the price of oil dropping to fifty dollars a barrel and a provincial election around the corner, I’m sure just like me, you have been hearing a lot of concerns. People are wondering what’s going on, what should they do, and where is our province headed? One thing I have been reminded of is that God wants His people to be fruitful – even in trying and uncertain times. A story that comes to mind is of Joseph. Joseph went through a lot. His brothers sold him into slavery when he was 17 years old. As a slave he was lied about and sent to prison. All of this lasted 13 years. For most of us the years of 17-30 are very impacting, and this was certainly the case for Joseph. A lot of times when we hear this story it is told something like this - God needed Joseph to go through those hard times so that all the issues of his heart would get figured out. All the bitterness would come out and he would be ready so that God could trust him with what He had for him. And I believe that. (He was responsible for a whole nation at age 30) But when we take a closer look at Joseph’s life I’ve noticed that it wasn’t defined by hardship, but actually it was defined by the faithfulness of God and prosperity in the midst of trying and uncertain times. Look at how Joseph’s lowest point is described: Genesis 39:23b - the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made to prosper.

I love this verse because there is uncertainty in the world. People all around are hit with trying times. But remember, even in the midst of that God will be with you and cause you to prosper. Another verse that comes to mind is Psalms 27:13 This verse is from one of the most famous Psalms written by David. He too had faced some major disappointments during his life. (But that’s not how the story ends!) He had to make decisions to trust God even in the midst of difficulty. Even though his circumstances were telling him the opposite. David is very honest with us in this moment saying… Psalms 27:13 -I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. David is saying I would have given up. I would have lost heart - UNLESS I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord. In moments of loss, pain, and disappointment even my Bible heroes had moments of wanting to quit. But David knew in his heart God wanted to be good to him and it kept him going. I want you to know today that God feels the exact same way about you. You were created in His image, and you mean so much to Him. If you are feeling disappointment or are in a trying time put your trust in Him. God bless you. Pastor Jonathan Nash

Library board members, staff and municipal councillors are being invited to attend a Parkland Regional Library (PRL) meeting to provide input for a new strategic plan for 2016 to 2018. The current plan terminates at the end of 2015. Four sessions will be held this month in Olds, Lacombe, Galahad and Camrose. Though not a host of any of the meetings, Sylvan Lake is a member of the PRL network. The strategic plan is focused on customer service and the organization as a whole, said PRL director Ron Sheppard. “What we’re going through now is a needs assessment process, Sheppard said.

PRL is required to file a new plan with the provincial government every three years, which is why input is being sought, Sheppard added. Information gathered will be sent to the PRL executive committee to be presented in additional meetings, so specifics of the future plan can be determined, Sheppard said. “We have to try and figure out how to make the best possible future while balancing out what our resources are going to be, Sheppard said. Sheppard hopes the meetings will provide PRL staff with a clear mandate from stakeholders and individuals on what they want to be provided with. “The reason it's so important is because we're operating in tight financial constraints

and we can't be everything to everybody, he said. “It’s like cutting up the pie for dessert — you can only cut it into so many slices and make them meaningful slices. “We need to know where we need to be putting our human resources and financial resources so that we can ensure that libraries are getting the best services and programs from us that they can. Shepphard said a big question will revolve around what kind of bigger role area libraries want PRL to play in terms of services and operations it provides. “There are any number of things that we may be able to take on centrally and at the regional level so that they can concentrate on direct services at the local level.

Safety emphasized in farm presentation to students JASMINE O'HALLORAN-HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Farm Safety Centre instructor Priscilla Tames discusses farm safety with Grade 4 students at École Steffie Woima School March 30. JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN

On May 5

Choose

Alberta’s Future Jim Prentice has a realistic plan to secure our future.

Grade 4 students at École Steffie Woima School participated in an interactive class discussion on farm safety with Farm Safety Centre instructor Priscilla Tames March 30. Safety topics were discussed such as what protective clothing and gear to wear when driving a quad, how to stay safe while driving a lawn mower and how to react to when injuries occur by calling 911 to get emergency help. Tames reinforced the message of 'it can happen to me' to the students during her presentation. She said there were about eight children in the class who live on a farm, ranch or acreage. She said safety can be forgotten as common injuries that happen on acreages are from lawnmowers, whose blades turn 16 times in the blink of an eye, or in one second. “If you have two people on the machine, and if the second person falls off, the machine doesn't shut down,” Tames said. “It doesn't know that that second person has come off of it.” Tames said that children in Grade 4 are closer to the age where they may soon

have the chore and responsibility of riding on lawnmowers, which is why she aims to make them aware of the possible dangers that the machines can present. Spending time teaching students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 about farm safety is paying off, she said — statistics show that hospitals are reporting fewer related injuries.

“No matter how good you are at something, anything can happen.” Priscilla Tames This shows that children in school are taking Tames’ lessons seriously and are relaying what they have learned to their parents at home, Tames feels. She also talked to students about the importance of wearing helmets and other appropriate gear such as protective pants and boots when riding quads. “I talked with some parents and they have said thank you for teaching my kid,” Tames said. “They get

into such a habit and routine day after day that they don't take that time to realize that their kid maybe doesn't put his helmet on. Now they realize anything can happen.” By learning about the injuries that can result from not wearing a protective helmet, more kids are taking wearing a helmet seriously, Tames said. She said she asked some Grade 5 and 6 students how many of them ride with their helmets and said over 80 per cent of them raised their hands, with many saying they are not allowed to ride without them on. “It's neat for them to share with me,” Tames said. “I hope they share it with their parents.” Tames shared her own personal story of having a lifetime of experience riding horses, and then one day being bucked off a horse in an incident that broke her back in five different places and landed her in hospital for two weeks. She said she had to use a walker and cane for nearly two months. Six months later she got back on a horse. “No matter how good you are at something, anything can happen,” Tames said. “I hope they take that, even if it's just bike riding.”

Meadowlands Golf Club has a new course superintendent. Jasper native Tyler Whitfield has more than 25 years of experience in the industry, and brings to the role the “expertise and experience to handle whatever comes his way,” according to Meadowlands marketing coordinator Lindsey Rutsch. “Growing up on the links, thanks to his father and grandparents, golf was less of a game as it was a way of life,” she said. “His love of the sport and his attention to detail led him to the superintendent career path.” Whitfield’s golf career began when he was just seven. At 14, he won Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course’s junior club championship. Rutsch said Whitfield’s appointment would provide a “new and fresh asset” for the course. “From maintaining mature courses, to the construction of new ones … Tyler has made a name for himself in both public and private courses throughout Alberta and British Columbia.”

The Sylvan Lake Wave U15 volleyball team had another successful weekend April 11 and 12, when the girls brought home silver medals from Premier 3 in Edmonton. After finishing second in their pool behind the Calgary Canucks, the Wave went on to win the crossover game against TSA Elite from Calgary. Sunday’s games started with a win against the Queens Ultimate from Red Deer, then a semi-final match with the FOG Legends from Edmonton to put them up against the Canucks once again, for the gold medal final. Throughout the weekend, the girls showed that they wanted much more. It was evident through their play. With this showing, the U15s should move up to Division 1 and face some stiff competition at provincials May 2 and 3 in Calgary.

Sylvan Lake minor hockey players to play for Alberta Cup JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Two 15-year-old minor hockey players from Sylvan Lake will play for Hockey Alberta’s 2015 ATB Alberta Cup at the Canmore Recreation Centre April 29 to May 3. Kale Seelen and Joshua McNeil gave it their all at tryouts last month and proved their on-ice playing capabilities. They were two of 160 players to stand out and be chosen out of over 700 players that attended the tryouts. Both players are on the same team and are both playing forward positions for the developmental program that focuses on giving children the opportunity to play hockey with other players at a similar talent and ability level. “I feel like I put all my effort out on the ice and I played the puck well,” Seelen said. “I made some nice plays. I stayed confident with the puck and I wasn't going to give it away.” McNeil feels he stood out because of his skating. “I used my speed and blew past people,” he said. He added he was surprised to be chosen out of so many players that tried out, but is thrilled to have been chosen to play on the team as he knows not many people get the

chance to go the Alberta Cup. “There were a lot of players there and a lot of good talents,” McNeil said. “I feel very privileged to go the the Alberta Cup in Canmore.” Seelen said he was shooting pucks in his garage when he received the call from the director of operations Ian Tisdale asking him if he would be interested in playing for the team. Without hesitation he accepted. Seelen said that he is fulfilling his young ambitions of being a hockey player, and that being chosen to play for the Alberta Cup is a real confidence boost. “I worked as hard as I could during the summer training for this year, and now making (the) Alberta Cup made everything even better,” Seelen said. “I’m very proud of myself and excited to be on the team.” Both players have been playing hockey for the past 11 years, and both players say their overall goal is to win the tournament. But in addition to winning the game, both players want to learn. “Of course (I want to) win the tournament with the team,” Seelen said. “(But I also want to) make new friends, have a few laughs along the way and learn some new things.

I think it will be fun.” McNeil agrees. “I think it’s going to be a good experience living without my parents and learning to live on my own for a bit,” he said. “I will be with friends, so I will have a little bit of help, but it will be a bit different without my parents.” Both players know they will be entering a hockey atmosphere where players have to give it their all. In addition, they will have many fans watching their every move and cheering for them. But both players say that playing for the Alberta Cup is a great experience and good hockey. “You have to put it all out there and throw your heart out on the ice, because there's everyone watching you,” Seelen said. “As a young hockey player I would love to make it far and go to the Western Hockey League and get scouted. It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was super young to go the NHL. It’s going to be a great experience.” McNeil is relishing the prospect of playing at such a high level. “It’s a great event, and it’s probably some of the best hockey you will see at this age,” he said. “There are so many good players — it’s a higher level than anything I’ve ever seen or played at before, so it’s definitely a new experience.”

Generals kick off bid to reclaim Allan Cup JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Bentley Generals have maintained their ‘practice makes perfect’ mentality in their preparations for another possible Allan Cup win this month. The Generals were scheduled to kick off their cup run in Clarenville, N.L. on Tuesday with a game against the hosts the Caribous, who beat the Generals to the cup in 2011 in Kenora, Ont. The Generals then beat the Caribous to win the Allan Cup in 2013 in Red Deer. Generals players work hard every year for the chance to win the Allan Cup, with each of the team’s players selected based on his reputation, said general manager Jeff McInnis. That selectiveness, he feels, plays a big role on the team’s overall success on the ice. “I feel like we have an extremely good group of people who run it, coach it, play in it, and we have a lot of volunteers off the ice who make it smoother for the players on the ice,” McInnis said. “We are a committed group from top to bottom and head to toe. Through 16 years of grinding away, we've found a way to put ourselves in a

good position every year with the right type of people.” Coming out of the gates strong earlier this week, he felt, would be vital in the team’s pursuit of Allan Cup success this year. “I believe being good from the drop of the puck,” McInnis said. “Last year I felt that we got better as the tournament went on, but we ran out of time. Losing the first two games last year put us in a tough position. We needed to try and win our first two games this year.” Overall, the Generals

have been successful in winning most of their games. That success, McInnis said, is due in strong part to the team’s support from volunteers, sponsors and fans. “The public needs to know how appreciative we are of the support,” he said. “The support could be someone coming to the game or someone sponsoring it, but that's the formula.” Generals Allan Cup game results, unavailable at press time, will be viewable on the Allan Cup’s official website at www.allancup.ca.

Celebrating Sylvan Lake’s rich musical history The following article and accompanying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building. Music has always played a big part in the Sylvan Lake social scene. Well-known bands such as Sonny Fry, Paul Perry, Gene Dhluey, the Rangelanders and the Silvertone Five played for well attended dances in the Prom and Varsity Halls. However, in later years when the big dance halls were gone, smaller local bands emerged to entertain at birthdays, anniversaries, barbecues, seniors complexes and Lions Club events. These bands had fun and so did the townspeople. The band names were quite innovative — the ‘Sympathy Band’, the ‘Over the Hill Band’, and the ‘Lions Club Band’ — also

given the questionable name ‘Slave Band’ by Judy Herder! “Cheap, but good” was a comment from Judy Herder about the Sympathy Band, in which she was a vocalist and sometimes ‘tub thumper’. The photo on this page shows the band (circa 1970s) in old fashioned bathing suits. Top row: Bob Pickering, Marian Cutting, Al Llungren, Dolly Hendrickson, Helen Fisher. Front row: Ann Barker, Inga Franks, Marj Lane. Later members included June Hansen, Bernice Large, Judy Herder and Vern Stinn. In the Lions Club band photo, which was taken at

Herder’s farm in 1987, Bob Munson on trumpet is on the left, then Al Llungren on saxophone, Al Parker on the microphone, Blaine Jasonson on saxophone, Bob Pickering ing h on drums and Gerry Fisher on piano. Other members were vocalists Don May and Dale Mannix. The photo of the ‘Over the Hill Band’ shows Pat Spence on the gut bucket, Lila Ramsay and Joyce Piller on various noisemakers, June Hansen playing xylophone and Vera Aebig on the “sax”. Other members were Marian Cutting on piano and Bill Piller on banjo.

MARKET UPDATE Outstanding Agents Oustanding Results®

Active Listings in Buyers Market March sales were not quite up to last year’s pace, but still strong when compared to the average of the last five years. In spite of strong demand, the advantage has turned to buyers as the number of active listings is quickly rising. We saw large gains in inventory across almost every price range last month. An increase in inventory is normal at this time of year, but the energy slowdown is almost certainly contributing as well. Buyers will benefit from more choice and more competition for sellers.

The ATB Alberta Economic Outlook just released suggests that while oil and natural gas prices are down, there are lots of bright lights in the Alberta economy. Forestry, agriculture and tourism are all going to benefit tremendously from the low dollar, lower energy costs and a better labour market. The construction industry will also benefit from those things and will be kept busy to some degree as the provincial government pushes ahead with public works projects, schools and hospitals.

The real estate and residential construction industries will undoubtedly feel the impact of lower oil prices, but will not be impacted as heavily as previous downturns. Net inmigration to Alberta is expected to reach 40,000 people in 2015 and those people will need homes. Historically low mortgage rates under 3% combined with stable prices will make home ownership a very attractive proposition for anyone needing a place to live in Alberta in 2015.
