SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908

$388,000 payout for former CAO Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

The District of Mission paid almost $389,000 in severance and owed vacation to former chief administrative officer (CAO) Ken Bjorgaard. The numbers were released after The Record filed a freedom of information request with the district. According to the figures provided, under his employment agreement Bjorgaard was paid $261,759. He also received $82,800 retirement allowance, $39,008 in owed wages

(untaken holiday time) and $5,200 for legal fees, for a total of $388,767. In 2013, Bjorgaard earned an annual salary of $178,404. Bjorgaard, who was Mission’s finance director, was named the BJORGAARD CAO in April of 2012 to replace Glen Robertson who was retiring. Bjorgaard was let go on February 13, 2015 and replaced, on an interim basis, by Robertson. Mission Mayor Randy Hawes said no one

is pleased with the final amount, but it was a “without-cause severance.” “I know the public won’t be happy with it, with the amount. Be assured, none of us (on council) are happy with the amount either. We are all taxpayers as well. But we felt to move ahead in the direction we want the city to move in, we had to make the change,” said Hawes. He would not go into details on why the change was needed, other than to say it was a council decision. “Whenever we have this sort of thing, it is a labour issue that never gets discussed

in public.” Hawes added that the contract called for severance and the district had to pay. “That’s pretty much what contracts in every CAO of a city calls for.” He said the final severance amount is actually closer to $350,000 because the $39,000 in owed holiday time would have to be paid whether Bjorgaard left or not. “That’s not part of the severance package. That’s what he’s owed.” As for the $5,200 in legal fees, Hawes said a lawyer was involved to negotiate Bjorgaard’s departure.

Welcome to the Bronze Age The Mission Outlaws junior B hockey squad won provincial bronze over the holiday weekend. The hosts of the Cyclone Taylor Cup battled the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Monday morning and defeated the visitors 7-0 to take third place in the four-team tournament. The win provided some redemption for the local squad. Mission was knocked out of the league playoffs by North Vancouver in March. For more on the Outlaws, see page 25. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

Looking for new recruits Fire department has close to 20 positions available Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Mission Fire/Rescue Service captain Jason Symons was sitting at an annual general meeting for Mission Minor Soccer Association two weeks ago when his pager sounded. The series of high-pitched tones were unmistakable. Something was on fire and someone needed the fire department’s help. He quietly slipped out of the meeting at the Mission Leisure Centre and made his way to Fire Station 1 on Seventh Avenue within minutes. From the voice message, Symons already knew a structure was burning on 14th Avenue. He got into his gear, climbed aboard one of fire trucks and roared down the street towards the plume of smoke. Even after being a firefighter for 23 years and having responded to thousands of 911 calls, adrenalin and excitement still rushed through his body. But once on scene, his feelings were brushed aside and his training took over. He was in his comfort zone and his instinct was to put the fire out without putting anyone or anything at risk. “Jason is one of our senior captains,” said Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson, who described Symons as one of the busiest guys he knows. Symons has been coaching soccer for years, owns a successful business, volunteers around the community, and makes a significant contribution to the local fire department. According to Watkinson The training Symons has received with the fire department has helped him become a well-rounded individual who can face crises and hazardous situations with a sense of calm and confidence. Symons joined the department when he was just 19 years old. “I joined because as a kid, I was always interested in the fire department,” said Symons, who was born and raised in

Captain Jason Symons has been a volunteer paid on-call firefighter with the District of Mission for 23 years. A recruitment drive is now underway to expand the Fire/Rescue CAROL AUN PHOTO Service. Mission. Over the years, he has missed out on family celebrations, parties and countless hours of sleep because of his commitment to the department. He even skipped out on Christmas dinner one year. Symons’ family and friends are supportive of his work, and even his three children understand what he must do. “You get used to it,” states Symons, who doesn’t complain when he is called out at 4 a.m. and has to be at work a few hours later. “I enjoy it, and that makes it easier to get up in the middle of the night.” Symons cannot imagine life without the fire department. The crew at the hall is his second family. They support each other in their work and personal lives. For many firefighters, the sacrifice is overwhelmed by self-gratification, explained Watkinson. “Paid on-call firefighters are self-motivated individuals who want to do well for the community and serve those impacted by tragedy.” They have a high level of integrity and moral ethics, which is why people put their complete trust and faith in them, Watkinson added.

Watkinson is now looking for more community-minded individuals to join his group. It’s not often the fire department puts on a recruitment drive like the one that is currently underway. But because of operational changes and retirements, there are close to 20 positions available. “We’ve never had vacancies like this before,” said Watkinson, who is looking for individuals who live in the community and have some daytime availability. The number of calls and when they occur varies, he explained, noting firefighters respond to people in medical distress, motor vehicle crashes, and, of course, fires. Firefighters work on a rotation and can be called upon five times a day or just once a week. There are some basic requirements applicants must meet, such as being at least 19 years old, have a valid B.C. driver’s licence, and be in good physical condition. It’s strenuous work, said the fire chief, adding there are weekly training sessions, work around the hall, and volunteer commitments in the community. Symons expects there will be fierce competition. When he joined, more than 100 others were aspiring for the same thing. “We want team players,” said Symons. But most of all, Watkinson said, the fire department is looking for individuals with “characteristics” to represent the group. “We can train people on their ability, but we can’t train character.” Anyone interested in applying for a position can pick up an application form at Fire Station 1, 33330 Seventh Ave., or at mission.ca. Applications must be in by April 22, 2015. For more information, call Mission Fire/Rescue Service at 6004820-3794.

Silverdale gas station moves forward Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

A fourth gas station is in the works for Silverdale. Mission council gave third reading to the project Monday evening after reviewing additional information from staff about the project. At a public hearing on March 16, residents who lived near the proposed commercial hub at the corner of Lougheed Highway and St. Anthony’s Way, spoke to council about their concerns for the area’s

water supply. A preliminary assessment from a hydrogeologist found an additional well on the site will not impact surrounding ones. Recommendations were also made to mitigate any impact on wells in the area, such as testing the new well and monitoring water levels of existing wells. The developers have also promised to build an entrance-way feature for the district, but according to Mike Younie, manager of develop-

ment services, the project is still being negotiated. It will be something that reflects the community and captures the historical aspect of Silverdale, said Younie, who also noted staff did not support the project when it was first proposed because it did not conform with the Official Community Plan. “We worked hard with the developer to get to a comfortable level with this,” said Younie. Singh has been in discussions with Mission’s planning department since December 2013 to build a new gas service station, drive-thru restaurant, and several retail units at 29550 and 29560 Lougheed Highway. The properties are designated for development in the district’s employment land strategy, and market research conducted by the developer indicates another gas station in the area would be successful.

Hawes mistaken about ridership

MISSION CITY REALTY

Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Abbotsford ridership on the West Coast Express (WCE) is not as high as Mission Mayor Randy Hawes recently maintained. Hawes has raised the idea of asking City of Abbotsford to help pay for a portion of the $750,000 subsidy that the Mission district pays to TransLink each year to run the commuter train service. Hawes said recently that 60 per cent of WCE riders leaving the Mission station are from Abbotsford. However, numbers provided by the district tell a different story. According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s 2010 Strategic Review of Transit in the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford riders only make up 38 per cent of passengers boarding from the Mission WCE station. Mission residents account for 56 per cent of ridership while Chilliwack (three per cent), Harrison (one) and other (two) make up the remainder. “When I said 60, I knew it was roughly 60/40 but I thought it was the other way around. But I was wrong. That was a mistake I made,” Hawes acknowledged. Despite the corrected information, Hawes plans to continue his pursuit of cost sharing. “This is a regional service. I don’t think anybody could possibly dispute that. So the Mission taxpayers paying 100 per cent of the costs that TransLink chooses to put on us, to me doesn’t seem quite fair.” However, the 60/40 figure may be out of date. Those numbers are based on a 2010 report, but the mix of Mission riders appears to be even slim-

More Mission residents use the West Coast Express as compared to Abbotsford passengers. MISSION RECORD FILE PHOTO mer now, according to the latest TransLink information. According to manager of media relations for TransLink Cheryl Ziola, every weekday more than 11,000 customers get on and off the WCE at one of eight stations. And while TransLink does not collect demographic data by station as the 2010 report did, it does conduct an overall ridership survey. According to the 2014 Customer Service Performance data collected for TransLink by Ipsos Reid, nine per cent of WCE riders polled identified Mission as their municipality of residence, while only two per cent said Abbotsford. TransLink subsidy: Each year, the District of Mission pays TransLink close to $750,000 towards running the WCE. According to Hawes, when the WCE was first proposed, it was not going to include a station in Mission because the district is not within TransLink jurisdiction. Instead, the plan was to merely overnight the trains in Mission. The council at the time told TransLink that it wanted a station.

“Why would you not have a station right beside where the trains are overnighting? It made no sense,” explained Hawes. A five-year deal was struck which included Mission building the pedestrian overpass that goes over the tracks and paying a fee to TransLink of $120,000 a year. Hawes said the money helped subsidize the service because passenger fares did not cover all the costs. When the contract came up for renewal, the cost increased. “It skyrocketed up, and apparently continued to do that until today, when it’s just over $750,000 a year.” The current contract expires this year and Hawes wants to have a serious talk with the agency. “The last figure I saw from TransLink, they said the real incremental cost was over $3 million to have TransLink here. I happen to think that’s crazy because they are going to overnight the trains anyway. I think $750,000 is crazy.” Mission is the only station that pays the $750,000 subsidy because the remaining stations are all part of the TransLink system.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

High cost of parting ways

Is a fourth gas station needed in Silverdale?

are these kinds of contracts, guaranteeing huge compensation, appropriate? The “all contracts are like that” explanation doesn’t justify spending close to $400,000 to make a change in personnel. With the current economic climate, local governments have to start thinking differently. Is it really true that in order to get good people, lavish compensation must be put on the table? Or is that just how it’s always been done? Governments are not private businesses and shouldn’t be run in the same manner. Surely, talented individuals are available for well-paid public jobs without taxpayers footing the bill to reflect every perk of corporate culture.

The District of Mission paid a hefty sum to part ways with chief administrative officer Ken Bjorgaard. The former CAO’s severance package, retirement allowance and owed holiday pay cost the district, and therefore the taxpayers, close to $389,000. It’s the kind of “golden parachute” you normally see when a major corporation drops a CEO. Asked about the large payment, Mission Mayor Randy Hawes noted that most city CAO contracts call for such payouts. We wonder why. Big businesses guaranteeing large severance packages is one issue, but why do municipalities feel the need to offer such lucrative benefits? When it is taxpayers footing the bill,

YOUR VIEWS

‘Insulting and berating’ those with opposing views How insulting and disrespectful of Randy Hawes to recall “night after night of repetitive dribble”(sic), when scores of speakers spoke against the proposed mega development slated for Silverhill and Silverdale. The majority presented well thought-out submissions, raised many good points and basic questions, which were just tossed aside as irrele-

vant and certainly never answered honestly by council or Genstar/Madison. Most certainly it would have been accurate to attribute “repetitive dribble” to councils and mayors. Almost to a man, all who supported the proposed development were realtors and neighbouring property owners whose only thought was the big

financial rewards that they expect would flow from being included into the proposed urban area of 3,400 acres. Obviously, the environmental damage was not on their radar screen, as opposed to all those who spoke in opposition. Fundamentally, all development certainly will destroy all in its path as developers are like locusts with money being

their only goal. Through the last 100 years, in particular, people have died in their millions to defend the right of free expression yet Randy Hawes dismisses anyone who opposes his views by insulting, and berating them. Verbal bullying indeed! In the tax year 20132014 the Genstar/Madison lands only generated under $200,000 in tax rev-

enue, which equates to about $200 an acre so how does the value of $200 million square up? Both figures cannot be right as either Mission is owed a lot of taxes or Mission residents are entitled to a big tax refund. Considering the Genstar/Madison lands were obtained 30–40 years ago for peanuts, and they are now “flipping” the entire acreage, if there are not

enough billions of profit in the proposed development as it is now, just how could any other developer make sufficient billions if they have to buy the land for $100 million to $200 million? As a matter of correctness, drivel should have replaced dribble!

Flood should have been prevented Re: “Intensity of rain factor in flood” (Mission Record, March 27 edition) In this article, Mayor Randy Hawes claims that the flooding and damage to the homes of the residents on McRae Avenue was not due to neglect. Hawes stated that it was caused by a blockage due to a “discarded Christmas tree and old chair. He then stated that “all culverts were inspected in February.” As someone who lives on a nearby street, I beg to differ. My husband took

our dog for a walk down to the culvert last September (2014) and noted the tree and chair. He was disgusted that such a beautiful place was being used as a garbage dump. We have tried ourselves to clean up this area but nothing seems to deter the garbage dumpers, druggies or taggers. Be honest Randy Hawes, your people should have prevented the flooding! J. & D. $60,000 legacy from BC Games Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Memories of the 2014 BC Winter Games still linger around its host city. Volunteers still talk about their experience and the large paper snowflakes created as decoration for the event have made their way around to several other celebrations in the past year. And now, artists, youth and athletes will think of the Games when grants and bursaries are given out each year. This week, Mission BC Winter Games president Brian Antonson announced the host city will receive a $60,000 legacy from the games. Money from the legacy fund represents savings realized by the Mission 2014 board of directors as a result of community and corporate support, said Antonson. The savings totalled just over $100,000, but 40 per cent of it had to be returned to the BC Games Society to support future Games. The money that is left in Mission will support sports, arts, and culture in this community. More specifically, $25,000 will be administered by the Mission Sports Council for KidSport Mission, and the Mission Community Foundation will administer a $23,000 fund for sport infrastructure and athlete, coach and official development, and a $12,000 fund for arts and culture. “BC Games Society policy allows for a maximum of 25 per cent to go to arts and culture, as well as sport, but we decided on 20 per cent for arts and culture,” said Antonson, who explained a committee comprised of Games board members and a representative from the district’s parks and recreation department helped determine how to spend the legacy money. While the money will be invested into the community, Antonson added $2,000 of the $12,000 going to arts and culture will be used to create something that will provide a permanent remembrance of the Games. In addition to the legacy fund, the Games also left behind close to $26,000 in sporting equipment at Hemlock Valley Resort, and electrical improvements to Hemlock and Mission Raceway Park. Mission also now has a database of more than 400 volunteers who are ready to jump into future events. But the biggest impact from the Games were the “smiles,” said Antonson. “The Games made a tremendous impact on our community economy, enthusiasm, and spirit, and left Mission feeling very accomplished. The next BC Winter Games takes place in Penticton in 2016.

Six months ago, my wife and I bought a car each from JP DesRosiers. The service was great and we both got exactly what we wanted. Everyone was very friendly and easy to talk with. Today my car was due for service. I was happy with the quality of the service and the maintenance that was completed. It was quick and efficient without felling rushed and the person at the counter was exceptionally pleasant!

and “there’s bound to be more unless sewer goes in. He noted the cost to repair or replace a septic system can be crippling for some families and this development is a chance for the district to have the cost of putting in sewer lines paid for by developers. The developers are planning to build in two phases. Twenty-five single family residential lots would be created in the first phase, and up to 36 lots could be accommodate in the second. The developers have already hosted a public information meeting earlier this year to gather input from neighbourhood residents. Mission council has scheduled a public hearing for the project on Thursday, April 30 at Hatzic Secondary School. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

According to a traffic assessment report, the development is not expected to have considerable impact on the network of roads in the area. There are municipal water lines in the area, but most homes are on septic systems. As part of the development, the district’s sewer lines will be extended from the Lougheed Highway to service the new homes and homeowners along the new line have the option to hook up. The developers will also be required to contribute to the cost of upgrading the district’s sanitary sewer system in the area to accommodate the additional flow. Mayor Randy Hawes said there have already been a number of septic failures in the area

Water main cleaning is a key component of maintaining water quality. Annually the District of Mission cleans approximately 20% of the water system mains. Cleaning is achieved by inserting disinfected bullet shaped foam swabs into the water main via a fire hydrant and then allowing the water pressure to push the swabs through the main scrubbing the pipe sidewalls to a fire hydrant at the end of the main where the swabs and the scoured debris are flushed out of the water main.

Alyn Beerda, who frequently pulls up beside vehicles stopped at red lights to see if the driver has a phone in hand. Last week police and volunteers teamed up

with ICBC to enforce and educate distracted drivers on the Cedar Valley Connector. The number of tickets handed out has not yet been released by Mounties. PLANT THE SEEDS OF GOODNESS Most people have good hearts and would like to see the world transformed into one where love and compassion are the dominant motives, but unfortunately, the world isn’t so easily transformed. Hatred, violence and pugnacity are deeply seated in the human psyche, and the evildoing which flows from these sources is strongly resistant to change. So, how might we work to transform the world into a better place? There are many ways to make the world better. Gandhi suggested that “We must become the change we want to see in this world. Jesus counseled us to “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And, the law of karma claims that if we treat others well, our good deeds will return to us. Surely, there is some simple, yet profound wisdom in all of this. The quiet, unassuming example of a good person is often more effective at inducing change than the self-righteous moralist on their soapbox. Perhaps the attempt to transform the world into a better place is more like planting a seed than inducing a wholesale change of heart. And although we don’t know which of our kind words or actions will take root and grow in someone else’s heart, we should keep on planting those seeds and watering them with the hope that they will grow. And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

ear,â€? said Beerda. “It’s so you can hear horns, sirens, and be more aware of your surroundings.â€? “Distracted driving is the second leading cause of fatalities in the province,â€? said Don Miller, ICBC road safety coordinator for Abbotsford/Mission, adding only impaired driving ranks higher. “You’re four times more likely to be in a crash if you’re on the phone.â€? According to the insurance company, on average, there are 88 fatalities each year in B.C. related to distracted driving. Miller offered the following tips for road users: • Leave your phone alone. No call or text is worth risking your life or others. Let calls go to voicemail and ignore your text messages while driving. • Pull over to make or receive a call. If you have to take a call, pull over if it’s safe to do so or use your phone in hands-free mode; stay focused on the road and keep the conversation brief. • Plan to avoid distraction. Turn your cellphone off or place it in the trunk of your car so you won’t be tempted to talk, email or text when you’re on the road. • Assign a designated texter. Ask your passengers to make or receive calls and texts for you. • Keep your hands off. Hands-free means a bluetooth or wired headset or speakerphone. If you’re using a headset or headphones, remember that drivers can only wear them in one ear.

Three Mission gymnasts named to Team B.C. Three Mission gymnasts will be competing at the Western Canadian Championships in Alberta later this month. Ashlynn Skulstad, Tamara Skulstad, and Justine Robinson earned a spot on Team BC this past weekend at the Abbotsford Twisters annual invitational event at Ag-Rec in Exhibition Park. Other Twisters that qualified for the event are Marquita Morison, Brienna Gaspar, Mikhayla Rosenow and Zoe Rumsby. “This is the highest amount of female athletes from one single club that will be representing Team BC at this competition,” said Sophia Kliewer, community relations officer for the club. Close to 1,000 athletes from across the province and Yukon took part in the Abbotsford competition.

Author and counsellor Barry MacDonald is bringing his Boy Smarts seminar to Mission. These are daunting times for raising boys. Many parents worry about the possibility that their boys are being mentored by screen violence and hyper-sexualized media content. They worry about pop culture’s ability to normalize impulsive, disrespectful, and self-destructive behaviour. They worry that boys are internalizing confusing and disturbing versions of masculinity such as those represented in the video game Grand Theft Auto, and that boys are being conditioned, through dazzling and hypnotic media images, to become ever more aggressive. “In addition to worrying about the influence of a media-saturated culture that seems to equate violence and masculinity, parents have many

other concerns,” said MacDonald. “We often hear on the news about the widening gender achievement gap in schools, where many boys are floundering, disengaging, giving up. As I reported in my book, Boys on Target, boys are at greater risk than girls for most of the major learning and developmental disorders – as much as four times more likely to suffer from autism, attention deficit disorder, and dyslexia.” Many people have images of what boys are supposed to be and what they are going to be like, said MacDonald. “In Boy Smarts I argue that society can channel boys into a sort of cultural straitjacket that molds mind and enforces behaviour by confining emotional expressiveness; that boys who want to become real men fear appearing as wimps in the eyes of their peers, and espe-

cially their fathers.” MacDonald adds, “Despite the media’s clichéd portrayals of boy troubles as caused by fatherless homes, lax parenting, excessive video gaming, and broken educational systems, many know that seeking out easy targets of blame does not help anyone. “Understanding that we have common concerns, we also know that we need to consider each situation, each boy, one by one. As I listen to the unique stories of parents and respond to their varied concerns about their boys’ development in each of my workshops and books, I have endeavoured to provide real-life guidance tailored to the different needs, strengths, and personalities of the young boys in our care.” Boy Smarts takes place April 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clarke Theatre in Mission.

Three Tour de Valley riders visited Mission schools last Monday to raise cancer awareness and begin the Cops for Cancer fundraising campaign. Mission RCMP Const. James Mason, Correctional Service of Canada manager Aaron Billesberger, and Country 107.1 radio host Chris Coburn visited Christine Morrison, Albert McMahon, ESR, and Mission Central elementary schools, as well as Mission and Hatzic secondary schools. Brandon Radnai, who is a childhood cancer survivor, also joined the team for part of the tour. The group talked about the upcoming ride and advances in cancer treatments, and challenged students to live a healthy lifestyle and raise funds to support children living with cancer. Students at some of the schools had already started fundraising for the team: Heritage Park had hosted a bake sale and students at Mission Central were donating money to guess how much candy was in a jar. Cancer is an “awful disease that affects a lot of us,” said Billesberger, adding funds raised will help send children with cancer to Camp Goodtimes, where they can meet others going through similar experiences. The community of Mission has been very

STAVE WEST MASTER PLAN for the MISSION INTERPRETIVE FOREST Recent history of the Stave West area In the 1950s the local government established Tree Farm License No.26 (TFL#26). Since that time the District of Mission has developed that resource as a working forest and a semi-wilderness playground in Mission’s back yard. Six years ago, the preliminary feasibility study for the western part of TFL#26 recognized that, developed carefully, the Mission Interpretive Forest could become “a major destination recreation area creating local employment, fostering community involvement, protecting the environment and attracting visitors to enjoy a safe semi-wilderness area close to the Lower Mainland” Today this 50 square kilometre area is still mostly unregulated for recreation use, and this has led to issues with land-use conflict and a weakened reputation. Opportunities in Stave West for the Community The Stave West Master Plan was developed with extensive consultation and collaboration with the citizens of Mission, local First Nations, Provincial Ministries and Crown Corporations, education and busi-

ness partners, and user groups and associations from across the region and British Columbia. Based on balanced social, environmental and economic principles, it builds on the potential to

environmental stewardship, and honouring culture and heritage. The Master Plan sets out a goal of transformational change for the large area directly north of the community currently identified as Stave

ity by the community, business and First Nations during the provincially supported North Fraser Regional Economic Investment Pilot. Ideally, the Stave West Master Plan is intended to be a road map to guide future developments and opportunities in areas of recreation, cultural tourism, education, forestry, economic and environmental stewardship that promotes partnership and working in collaboration to ultimately balance and respect the various interests at play in this region. It is recognized that the potential of planning and partnership that can be established at Stave West, with its foundations in this Master Plan, between the province, the District of Mission, First Nations, user groups, educational partners, and others is significant with the potential to be precedentsetting in British Columbia, particularly with respect to collaborative and sustainable land use planning and development. The Stave West Master Plan will be presented at a special public meeting of the District of Mission Municipal Council on Thursday April 16 from 7 to 9pm at the Mission Leisure Centre.

and lots of great eclectic restaurants for our tourists to enjoy. 2015 is an exciting year for Mission as many projects are coming to completion including the new Cascade Falls suspension bridge, the new interactive Quest Upon app and the District of Missions development of the Interpretive Forest with new recreation opportunities for residents and visitors to explore the beautiful mountains, forest and lakes on the west side of Stave Lake., we can expect even more visitors to our community. With all these tourist activities, destinations and opportunities, I suggest we all find ways to connect to the tourist dollar. I am hard pressed to find a business in the community that is not affected by tourism. As an accountant I didn’t think that my business was affected by the rise and fall of tourism, but I was quickly reminded that those businesses that I did have as my clients were affected either directly or indirectly by tourism and therefor so was my business! In addition, those tourists that came to Mission and decided to stay would be bringing new tax revenues, employment, and use of many other services outside of tourism, including accounting services. Marketing my business online and in the community allowed for my business to

be seen by these new potential clients. The lower Canadian dollar is driving American travellers north to cash in on their great rate of return and we are positioned well geographically to capture this set of tourists. Depending on your business there are many ways to turn a tourist into a long term client. The tourism committee of the Chamber of Commerce will be working hard this year to help promote Mission and find ways for our members to engage with the tourists exploring our community. So get out into your community this April and be a tourist and find ways to leverage your own business in the tourism market.

What better month to celebrate TOURISM then in April, after months of being cooped up indoors, the weather is warming and many are looking for activities to get out into the beautiful fresh air. Mission is blessed with an abundance of tourist activities and even more future opportunities! This is the perfect month to practice to be a “Tourist in your own Town”, before the crowds of summer start rolling in. As I think about Mission and all the different choices I might have to be a tourist, many wonderful places come to mind. I think of Westminster Abbey, Fraser River Heritage Park, Stave Falls Visitor Centre, Mission Raceway Park, and Hemlock. In addition, there are many businesses that cater to the tourist; STS Guiding Service, Fraser River Safari, the MAC Family Gallery, Mission Museum, Trout Creek Farm to name a few. That doesn’t count the many events held at the Fraser River Heritage Park, Clarke Theatre, Opening Nite Theatre or the festivals every year including the Mission Folk Festival and the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival that attract thousands to our area. Mission truly has it all, from the arts to the outdoors. Breweries, wineries, hiking & biking trails, camping, boating, fishing, geocaching, exploring, arts and culture,

Learn more about how we create jobs, help local business grow and connect to global destinations. In 2014, YVR saw more than 19 million people enter the airport, facilitating more than 273,212 take-offs and landings, and handling 256,935 tonnes of cargo. Canada's second-busiest airport employs more than 24,000 people and is a key economic generator for British Columbia. With all this activity at YVR, business in Mission is bound to be impacted in some way. Hearing directly from the Airport Authority will help you plan for the future.”

Coast Eagle Consulting, best known as CEC Health & Safety, employs 12 people and helps organizations in almost every industry sector throughout B.C. “Our clients include municipalities, non-profits, construction companies, family-owned businesses, and even auto dealerships,” says company president Ilona Klimczak. “Safety is easy, if you have the right people and training in place, and if everyone in the organization, from the very top down, is in tune with it.” Workplace health and safety has been Klimczak’s focus for more than 15 years. Since 2009, she has shared advice and provided hands-on implementation through her Mission-

based company. “Our clients really appreciate that we save them time, money and headaches, and go to bat for them when needed,” says Klimczak. In addition to the necessary credentials, she and her team have the industry experience and formal education in workplace health and safety needed to serve clients well. Klimczak’s tenure in the industry has given her ample opportunity to know how to communicate successfully with regulatory bodies such as WorkSafeBC. She advises people to “make sure anyone you hire for health-and-safety services has proper credentials. I’ve been called in after-the-fact to help clean up messes that just should have never happened.”

The ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC) recently accredited CEC Health & Safety as one of four companies in B.C. to deliver the Construction Safety Officer Certificate course. “This helps us help companies save more time and money because we can take the training to them” explains Klimczak. “Soon we’ll be heading up to the Fort St. John campus of the Northern Lights College to start delivering the certificate course there,” she adds. For more information about how Klimczak and her team of professionals can help your organization, visit www.CoastEagle.com or call 604-287-1123.

How can the diminishing rural population continue to sustain urban B.C.?

Article Theme: There has been a significant shift from rural living to urban over the past few decades. The exponential growth in B.C.’s urban centres has left only 20% of the population to produce and extract the raw goods from our seven natural resources. Some of these resources provide for the direct needs of the Urban and Rural populations, while most resources are exported, helping pay for the imported wants and needs of both. We ask: how is this sustainable, and how do we educate urbanites on the balance and perceived dichotomy between urban values, and B.C.’s resource-based economy?

Outlaws end season on a winning note Claim provincial bronze by beating rival Wolf Pack Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

It’s not the league championship and it’s not a provincial gold, but a bronze medal victory over the North Vancouver Wolf Pack was still a sweet way to end the hockey season for the Mission Outlaws. The Outlaws dominated the Wolf Pack in their final game of the season, shutting out their rivals 7-0 to claim the bronze medal at the Cyclone Taylor Cup, B.C. championship tournament. Mission finished the round-robin portion of the event with a 1-2 record – losing a 2-1 decision to the Kimberley Dynamiters, defeating the Wolf Pack 7-6 in a shootout and dropping a 3-2 decision to the Campbell River Storm – good enough for third place in the

four team competition. That set up the bronze medal match with the winless Wolf Pack. Mission and North Vancouver are no strangers to each other, having played a six-game series last month to decide the Pacific Junior League championship. The Wolf Pack won that best of seven series 4-2. But on Monday it was all Outlaws. Bryce Pisiak scored two goals for Mission with singles going to Nicholas Thompson, Hayden Mowbray, Joshua Pollock, Erick Miller and Kyle Lennea. Goaltender Bryce Phenix picked up the shutout and was named team MVP. “That was crazy. We’ve played them (North Vancouver) eight times now in the last three weeks. I guess we’ve gotten to know each other pretty good.

Kimberley Dynamiters goaltender Tyson Brouwer challenges and beats Mission Outlaws forward Brody Dyck on a penalty shot during round-robin action at the BOB FRIESEN PHOTO Cyclone Taylor Cup. It’s a battle every game my home town. I’ve out there. It’s great,” said been here all my life so it’s probably the best Phenix. “It still hurts that we way to end it, other than didn’t take the league winning gold, but this is final, but coming into pretty good too.” Outlaws head coach this game we definitely wanted to get some Brad Veitch said he was redemption for sure feeling “quite satisand it feels really good fied” with the Outlaws season, adding he was right now,” he added. Phenix is one of only happy with the effort two Outlaws who are his players put in during graduating from the the tournament and the playoffs. club this season. “We wanted to win it “I live in Mission. It’s

all, but I think the bigger thing was the commitment and the effort level that we did get in the pursuit of it,” said Veitch,. “You can’t fault these guys for effort and that’s all you can ask of them. So, I’m happy with that.” The coach said, other than the bronze medal game, the entire tournament was tough, tight-checking and goals were hard to come by. And with the gold medal out of reach, the Outlaws pulled together for the final match. “The team played for each other. That’s why we were successful.” Along with Phenix, the Outlaws goaltender, forward Hayden Mowbray is the only other graduating player. That means Veitch will have an experienced team ready to make another run at the provincial

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation. Without Audéo V

With Audéo V

The new Audéo V devices ensure considerably clearer reproduction of spoken language in company.

New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that is designed to restore speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to

is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. I was recently sitting in a local restaurant when I quickly noticed that the fast food joint was very segregated. Everyone appeared friendly. There was a large group of South Asian teens in one section of the restaurant and in the other half were Asian and Caucasian teens. The only intercultural table was the one we were sitting at with the other person being Caucasian. Not to pick on any one race, we all know much work is needed on intercultural friendships in our communities. The moment we gear away from this conversation, issues can divide us. To build on this outreach, the Abbotsford News and Cycling4Diversity Foundation is offering a School Essay Contest. The 300-word essay question is: In 30 days, how could you impact cultural diversity in Abbotsford/Mission and

explain the significance of multiculturalism to you and your family? This question is for middle school students (ages 11 to 13) and there is also a colouring contest for elementary school kids. Those who are interested can contact me at kenherar@gmail.com or pick up the forms at the Abbotsford News office. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with two basketball greats, Brian Fichter and Kenny Braich, who weighed in on this discussion. Fichter, coached 32 seasons and for 12 of them he led the Mission Roadrunners (1973-1985). He took the Roadrunners to five BC Championships and almost captured a few titles. Fichter emphasized that much of our values towards each other are learned at home. One of the key points, he noted was that diversity was not an issue when he was a teacher/ coach because he would not allowed such a problem to arise. If this ever became an issue, the consequences would be much harsher when dealing with him. Fichter said: “If I had any success, as a coach, teacher in a diverse culture, it was

primarily because getting along was one of the prerequisites to success. Groups cannot achieve goals when they are not focused on the same goal and as a coach and later as a principal. I was the leader, so it was my responsibility to ensure that there were clear expectations for players, students and staff. “There was always a consequence for any two players who were having difficulties between themselves and I had decided early in my career that players who after each practice had issues would deal with me and that would be worse than dealing with each other. “I tried to have my players respect each other, their opponents and never allowed them to trash talk, he said.” Kenny Braich, who comes from a family of greatness and is also the uncle of Yale Secondary star Riley Braich, played under Coach Fichter in the early 1980s and was named First Team All Star in the 1982 provincial tournament after an eighth-place finish. He was also the highest scorer in that year’s tourney and sixth highest in history up to then. He was on sev-

eral BC Provincial Select teams and was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team. Braich, spoke about the importance of leadership and learning valuable lessons at home growing up and the challenges faced by parents today in the “me” generation. “There was never a serious issue of racism, prejudice or bullying amongst our teams, but it was very strong and present almost everywhere we played as we were often victimized as a team and/or individually. This started as early as I can remember with things being so bad that on one occasion during a championship hockey game around 1975, my coach made me switch uniforms and put talcum powder all over my face to try to conceal my ethnicity because he had heard that the other team was planning on intentionally hurting “the Hindu on Mission” to beat us. “As a society, we know what the issues are and we know how to solve them but as always, intelligence without gumption, without the fortitude to act, is useless,” he said.

OBITUARIES

Henderson’s Funeral Home 604-854-5534

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Pat passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 15, 2015 after a courageous but far too long battle. Pat was the only daughter out of six children born to Heck and Myrtle Neff in Eyebrow, Saskatchewan. She is survived by her son Dan Johnson; daughter Christine Johnson; her three granddaughters, aka “Nana’s Girls” as they were called, Taija, Terynn and Regann; two brothers Tim Neff and Cal Neff as well as many nieces and nephews and friends. Pat was predeceased by her father, mother, three brothers and her husband Ivan of 40 plus years. She moved to Moose Jaw with her family and enjoyed working at the Air Force base, as well as the Harwood Hotel and the Ambassador Café. Pat married Ivan in 1968 and made their home in Abbotsford and had their two children. She enjoyed being a football mom as well as a figure skater’s mom and always did what she could to help out, from early morning breakfast to making costumes. In her later years she devoted herself to her grandkids, always being there; it truly was pure happiness for her. NELSON, George Frank February 24, 1920 February 28, 2015 Frank lived a long life and died peacefully in palliative care at Abbotsford Hospital. Predeceased in 2012 by his wife of sixty-five years, Rose, he leaves behind many friends to mourn his passing. Frank was born in Ottawa and graduated from Montreal’s Sir George William University in 1950 with a BA. He was the medalist in the history department. Frank worked as a transportation consultant and economist and travelled to Africa and the Far East bringing modern day infrastructures to third world countries. His sense of humor and joie de vivre will be remembered by those that had the honor of knowing this wonderful gentleman. “Go gentle into that good night old friend.”

NORTON Ernest “Ernie” July 14, 1937 - April 6, 2015

Passed away peacefully after a brief illness. Predeceased and now reunited with his wife Gladys and son James “Jimmy”. Will be greatly missed by daughters Laura (Steph) and Maureen, and grandchildren Carlos, Oliver, and Maxine. Ernie was an elevator mechanic and member of the IUEC Locals 82 and 89, lover of all sports, and made friends wherever he went. Thank you to the outstanding nurses in the ICU at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. There will be no service. Dad was not a lover of formal events. Think of him fondly and raise a glass in his honor.
