Terrace homeless counted once more

TMC 20,200

On the march …

By Josh Massey THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - The main organizer of a homeless count planned for next week, the second in as many years, expects this year’s tally to be higher than last year’s figure of 64 people. “I think it is worse than last year,” said Mike Watson, a case worker at the Terrace and District Community Services Society (TDCSS). “Last year was when it all started to happen, when everything was starting to boom around here and the rents went up.” Watson said he increasingly can’t find apartments for his clients because subsidized housing units are full and wait lists are long. Joining him for the homeless count will be his TDCSS coworker and Northwest Community College Social Work graduate Julie Mahil along with six volunteers for the count which has the support of the city. The count is scheduled for April 21 and 22 which are the first days of the month when income assistance cheques are made available. “People who are living in the bush come into town that day,” said Watson. People without an address collect less – $200 – than the $570 for recipients who do have one, he said. The counting team will also check spots along the railway tracks and in the woods where homeless stay, asking each individual questions on a form that they fill out which records gender, age and other data. Watson said this year the team will try to better record the number of homeless youth whom he says are frequently couch-surfing and might not be in the local shelters and soup kitchens where much of the homeless count is done. City planner Tara Irwin said the information itself will be valuable to use in future discussions about housing and provides comparative data for last year’s count. She said it might help guide the use of city resources such as the $500,000 the city has tucked away in an account available for subsidized housing plans. This money is reserved by the city for potential partnerships with developers aimed at the affordable housing market. “Is it for the actual homeless, or is it for transitional housing, where is this fund best spent and on what kind of housing, because of course there is a big continuum of need,” said Irwin. The homeless count is financed by the city – $2,500 last year and about $1,500 this year. “We can’t understand a problem unless we know what we are dealing with. It’s an attempt to get a better understanding of homeless situation in our community and have that data available,” said Irwin of the count.

KITIMAT - Striking Kitimat municipal Unifor workers and supporters marched on Kitimat council chambers April 7, demanding answers to questions as a strike over wages and working conditions deepens. Both sides have now agreed to use a mediator. From left to right, Martin McIlwrath (holding the flag), Jeremy Dos Santos and Richard Velho.

Could be the finish for recycling group By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Kitimat Understanding the Environment, the non-profit society which operates the recycling depot in the Service Centre is potentially on its last threads. The society issued a notice last Friday which announced all of the existing board members will resign following May 26, the date of the society’s annual general meeting. It was said each board member had decided to resign independently. The AGM will be held at the library at 7 p.m. The Society Act requires a minimum of three officers on the board. If not then KUTE loses its society status. The conclusion to all of that would mean the recycling depot would close down. “We encourage the citizens of Kitimat to step up and volunteer to keep the Society and the Recycling Depot going. Please direct any inquiries to kitimatrecycle@gmail.com.” One of KUTE’s current directors says the decisions to resign were personal, which essentially lead to this perfect storm of having no one left at the end. There are only three people on the board at the moment. “What happened was I got sick, and to reduce the amount of stress I have in my life I’m shedding some of the more onerous responsibilities I have, one of them being KUTE,” said

fire chief Dave McKenzie. While McKenzie would not elaborate on the potential cause of the fire, one witness reported seeing containers of gas that had already been set on fire thrown at both the house and the boat. A total of 11 firefighters attended the scene, with McKenzie noting the situation surrounding the fire created some challenges.

Ken Maitland. “There are times where we’re having to deal with stuff multiple times a week. That was just added stress I didn’t need.” Another director had health issues in their extended family which took their focus, and it left the majority of work on to Barb Hall, KUTE’s president. “That’s a lot of stress on her,” said Maitland. He said the directors spoke with a lawyer to figure out the best way to go forward and it was recommended they go public on the need to give people time to understand the importance of the society and for people to step in. “What [the lawyer] recommended is announce resignations well in advance to try to explain to the community what the consequences will be, see if [we] can round up more members to step forward. Closing the depot would also put four employees out of work. “If you have enough people it’s manageable,” said Maitland, adding, “This series of circumstances that make it difficult with all of these projects going on, resulted in a very high turnover. We were regularly having to go search for people, interview people, hire people, go through that whole process.” Constant fundraising was also part of the job, he said. With KMP ramping down things might get easier, but if LNG goes ahead work will go up again.

Music of the British Invasion coming to Lester Centre stage

By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Songs from the ‘60s/’70s musical phenomenon “The British Invasion” will be taking over the Lester Centre of the Arts later this month. Completely Plugged British Invasion will feature more than 25 Prince Rupert musicians in nine different groups, paying tribute to English rock bands such as the Beatles, the Kinks, Budgie, Lulu, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Queen, T-Rex and more. “It’s going to be a real fun night. I think

some of the groups are even getting into character,” said Crystal Lorette, general manager of the Lester Centre of the Arts. “[The musicians] have been working really hard rehearsing.” Harbour Theatre actors will provide the laughs, performing a number of skits by British comedy group Monty Python throughout the show. Furthermore, Prince Rupert’s Keith Lambourne will be the show’s MC. British Invasion will be the second show in the Completely Plugged series, with those volunteering their talents helping to raise money for the Lester Centre’s “Lighting the

Way” project to replace the facility’s 200 theatre lights with a new LED system. The last performance, Completely Plugged Inspired, raised about $6,000 to upgrade some of the facility’s technical equipment. Completely Plugged British Invasion will take place on Saturday, April 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Lester Centre box office and Cook’s Jewellers. TERRACE – An information session was held March 31st at Ksan Place. Kalum Community School Coordinator Agatha Jedrzejczyk and local Farmer Diana Penner were on site to share information about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Among the guests visiting CSA Open House was mayor Carol Leclerc and City councillor Michael Prevost who bought CSA share and donated additional $ 100 for program development. This program is part of a recognized movement to build local agriculture in our region. Prepayment of a freshly grown “box” provided weekly to participants allows farmers to

better finance their business and encourages more farming in the area. The Community Supported Agriculture program that has run for the past two years in Terrace is now taking sign ups for 2015. For those who want to know where their food comes from and would like to support local farmers and reap the benefits of eating fresh, flavorful, nutritious homegrown food this is the time to become engaged. A weekly box of organic fruits and vegetables farmed on Skeena River loam soils is provided in trade for a post-dated pre-season payment of $500. Fresh nutritious fruits and

veggies are picked the day of your pick up. It is hoped that as the program develops so too will the agricultural base. Currently a farm located in the centre of Brauns Island is the primary supplier of CSA but 19 other producers have provided fresh product to the program. Last year 56 different foods were provided to 51 family units.\ It is hoped that this number will continue to rise. For more info check out SkeenaValleyCSA.com or Terrace CSA on Facebook. Or call Kalum Community School Coordinator Agatha Jedrzejcyzk, 250 641 3663 (FOOD).

Port traffic down slightly through the first quarter of 2015 By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - While all but one terminal within the Port of Prince Rupert experienced increases in the amount of products moved last month, there was a minuscule decline in tonnage in the first quarter of the year. All together, there was an increase of nearly nine per cent in the total tonnage handled by Prince Rupert operations last month when compared to numbers from March 2014. Still, just under half a per cent less was moved in the first part of the year than there was in 2014. In addition to the announcement of its expansion, there was more good news coming from Fairview Container Terminal in March. Last month, the facility handled 68,964 TwentyFoot Equivalent Units (TEUs), up from 43,451 TEUs in March 2014, or by 58.7 per cent. In the first quarter of the year 185,664.5 TEUs passed through Fairview, an increase of 44.6 per cent from 128,368.75 TEUs in the first three months of 2014. Last month there was 57 per cent more TEUs imported into Fairview Container Terminal than in March 2014, with 37,960.75 TEUs coming through last month compared to 24,125 TEUs in March 2014. By March’s end, there had been 36 per cent more imports at Fairview than in the same time period of 2014. There was also a gain of nearly 60.5 per cent in exports, with 31,003.25 TEUs going through Fairview last month in contrast to 19,326.5 TEUs last March. This consisted of nearly 26 per cent more loaded TEUs leaving Canada through Fairview, and more than 166 per cent empty TEUs. In the first three months of the year, Fairview had nearly 57.7 per cent more exports. Last month Westview Terminal saw a massive spike in tonnage of just over 113 per cent, jumping from 28,145 in March 2014 to 60,000 tons. In the first quarter of 2015, Westview Terminal moved nearly 141,606.4 tons, 27.2 per cent more than the 111,329 tonnes it moved in the same time period of 2014. There was 52.6 per cent more logs going through the harbour this March compared to last, totalling 68,964 tonnes last month in contrast to 45,186 in March 2014. By the end of last month, 144,103

tonnes of product went through the harbour, up nearly 16 per cent from the 124,423 tonnes handled in the first quarter of 2014. Prince Rupert Grain also saw gains, handling 600,205 tonnes, or 20 per cent more than March 2014’s total of nearly 500,080. In the first quarter of the year, Prince Rupert Grain experienced an increase of just under 19 per cent, jumping from 1,357,357.3 to 1,612,104.27 tonnes. The only operation within the Port of Prince Rupert that saw a drop in tonnage was Ridley Terminals Inc. In March, 408,620 tonnes was at the terminal, 39.3 per cent less than the 673,391 tonnes handled in March 2014. In the first quarter of 2015, Ridley Terminals Inc. saw a tonnage decline of 43 per cent, Still, the operations handled an impressive 1,162,930 tonnes in the first part of 2015 compared to 2,042,545 in 2014. In the first quarter 2015, 4,920,324.6 tonnes of product passed through Prince Rupert, down from the 4,922,453.8 tonnes in the first quarter of 2014.

B.C. veteran begins a cross-Canada ride By Tom Fletcher

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

VICTORIA - Quesnel rancher Paul Nichols kicked off a cross-Canada horseback ride Monday to introduce a new generation of veterans to the public and seek their support. Nichols, who served with Canadian troops during ethnic warfare in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, struggled to control his emotions at a ceremony at the B.C. legislature. “Our Canadian troops do a hard job for us, and when they choose to transition back into civilian life, some of them struggle and lose their way,” Nichols said. “And I can tell you from personal experience that a heartfelt thank-you and timely support from the community during that time of transition can be life-changing. So my job through this foundation is to put as many Canadian veterans in the saddle as I can.” Accompanied by other B.C. vet-

erans and his wife Terry, a therapeutic riding instructor, Nichols plans to connect with 700 veterans in an eightmonth journey ending in St. John’s, Newfoundland. “That awareness will create change, and with that change I believe that we can lower the incidence and severity of post-traumatic stress disorder, lower the incidence of family breakup and I think we can lower the incidence of veteran suicide,” Nichols said. B.C. Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon attended the ceremony to wish the riders well on their journey, offering a stop for hay and food at her ranch in the Nicola Valley. The ride includes stops in Abbotsford, Chilliwack Hope, Princeton, Summerland, Kelowna, Vernon and Armstrong before continuing into Alberta in May. For more information the ride, and to follow its progress, see their website at www.communitiesforveterans.com.

Airport authority outlines vision for renovated terminal By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Airport Authority invited the public to look at the latest designs for the upgraded terminal building at an open house on Wednesday night, with manager Rick Reed and architect Ulrich Laska on hand to field questions. Aside from significant changes to the outside of the terminal building, the designs show a much more open area that includes a baggage carousel where the library is and more space for people to move around. “What we have today is the lounge room and the hold room. If you look toward the south, we will remove all of the walls that are there now to open it up ... we’re taking all of the existing bathrooms out so that whole area will be open,” said Reed, with Laska noting more seating will be installed and all benches will now include power outlets for electronic devices. “All of the area where the bathrooms are now is open and we have plans for little kiosks that will display local art and things like that, but the whole area could be used for a restaurant or food services.” As well as an open space, there will be a

lot more room for check-in with the current desks pushed back and a theme area to welcome people to the city. “It’s going to be a sense of place. When you arrive here, you are going to know you are in Prince Rupert. It is going to reflect our environment, our cultures and our community. While we are working on it, we welcome input from the community about it,” said Reed. For those passengers who have made their way through security, which is designed to be more efficient with a separate space for screening passengers and divesting luggage, the redesign of the terminal promises a lot more space and amenities than what people are used to. “There will be two new washrooms in there, because we don’t have any now. There will be various vending machines so you can get snacks, a play area for the kids and beautiful glass on three sides so you can really sit and enjoy the activity out there. We’re also getting all-new, first-class seating in the area,” said Laska. “The holding room has been more than doubled so we can handle at least two Q400 aircraft. We’re getting up in the 200s in terms of capacity.”

SHAUN THOMAS / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

A rendering of the new Prince Rupert Airport terminal building. Work will continue throughout the summer, with Reed saying he is optimistic the renovations will be complete in September. “We’re practically finished our Phase 3 in the sense of all the grunt work being done,

now we put the finishes on it with things like the drywall and paint. It’s going to look very good,” he said. “When we talk to people they are generally positive about what we have here.”

Crackdown coming in the Kispiox E KISPIOX -There is growing concern about the increase of excessive alcohol consumption, underage drinking and destructive parties that occur during the two major events in Kispiox Valley and the three societies responsible for these events are taking action. The Kispiox Valley Rodeo Club (KVRC), Music Festival Society (KVMFS) and Community Centre Association (KVCCA) are teaming up to ensure any events held on the community grounds

are family friendly. “We are taking this very seriously and will ensure serious consequences to those who would disrupt the family atmosphere of our community events.” Says KVCCA president, Kathy Clay. What rodeo and festival goers can expect in 2015: - More onsite security during events - The prompt removal of those who are drunk and disorderly - Vehicles may be searched

for drugs and excessive alcohol (if you do not permit a search of your vehicle, you will not be permitted on the grounds) - If you were identified as a problem last year, you will be refused entry at the gate. - Underage drinkers will be removed from the community grounds and prosecuted The societies and the RCMP will reassess their strategies at the end of the year to see whether or not further measures are needed.

NABOC conference now sold out By Martina Perry

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT With just under two weeks until its commencement, seating for the 2015 National Aboriginal Business Opportunities Conference (NABOC) is now sold out. Organized by the 2G Group, the annual conference has become the most popular business networking event in Northern B.C. This year, the three-day event

will be the largest to date. “We’re very pleased it has become a big success in Prince Rupert,” said Geoff Greenwell, 2G Group CEO, noting 450 delegates representing 218 organizations will be in attendance. “This is the most diverse conference to date. We have people coming from as far away as Australia, China, Japan and all over Europe, [along with delegates] from the United States and Canada.”

Greenwell said based on calculations by 2G, the 2015 conference will create an economic spin-off of $750,000 for Prince Rupert businesses. On the evening of April 28, Keller Canada and McElhanney will host a welcoming reception at the Crest Hotel, with Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain, Lax Kw’alaams Mayor Garry Reece and Chief Harold Leighton of Metlakatla giving welcoming addresses.

PRINCE RUPERT - Lighthouse Harbour Ministries would like to announce the arrival of the 10,000 sailor to the Seafarers’ Centre. Pictured here are volunteers Vin Chau, Maddy Craddock and the Chinese sailor.

On April 29, the second day of the conference, delegates will gather at the Lester Centre of the Arts to hear Chief Roger William of the Tsilhqot’in First Nation speak about the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision on Aboriginal title rights and what it means for companies wanting to do business in Tsilhqot’in territory. Later that day there will be a session on LNG, with representatives from six companies proposing projects in the region providing updates, as well as a session from regional First Nations on some of the business initiatives currently being worked on. F u r t h e r m o re, Prince Rupert Port Authority CEO Don Krusel will speak about meeting the goals of the “2020 Vision” on April 29. The final day of the conference will be dedicated to networking, with delegates being encouraged to arrange

Gitxsan Chiefs defy odds in Prince George By Anna Killen THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

HAZELTON - Touted as the underdogs going in, and comprised of players who hadn’t actually played together as a full team, the Atom Gitxsan Chiefs triumphantly emerged with silver from the annual Prince George Aboriginal Youth Hockey Championships over Easter weekend. “They had a blast,” said coach Brody Jack, who coached with Victor Mowatt and Barry Heit. “I’m pretty sure [the other teams] figured they were going to walk all over Hazelton but these kids worked hard and did their best.” And that best ended with silver at the annual tournament – a feat for a team that hadn’t practised as a full squad before. The Hazelton-based team picked up players – three from Terrace, two from Fort St. John and a goalie from Calgary – with roots in the Hazelton area to compete in the tournament. But because the Hazelton arena is shut down – “basically condemned,” said Jack – the team didn’t get to hit the ice together until the tournament. But no matter. “It was almost right off the bat. You’d think they’d have been prac-

The tournament was a welcome reward for a team that worked hard all year but had some hardships. “For us in Hazelton, we had a rough year. Didn’t really win any

games,” said Jack. “I think as soon as I told the kids we had a goalie, that was a win right there. That’s right, the team had been playing the year without a consistent goalie – taking turns setting up between the posts. But with a keeper on lock from

Calgary for the tournament, the team could focus their efforts on the players’ preferred roles. And that proved to work well for the team, winning three out of five games, the only two losses coming from a strong Buckly House Bears team from Prince

George who beat them during the round robin and again during the final. “Our first game they were a little shaky but they came together and from there on it was just play hard and have fun,” said Jack. The Chiefs saw a comeback 4-3 win in game one, with the second game a back-and-forth 10-7, and then a character building 19-2 loss to the Bears. But the team didn’t let the loss get them down and the next day came back to win against PG’s Grassy Bay 7-5. With that win they made it into the finals, met Buckly House again and came home with silver after an 8-0 loss. “They didn’t know what to expect from all of these teams,” he said. “The kids had fun and never got down about anything, kept their cool and stayed together as a team.” The team knows it faces a battle next year – they’ll need to practise and play on ice that isn’t in Hazelton until a new arena is completed, and will likely be needing to connect with other communities to get ice time – but spirits are strong after ending the season on a high note with silver at their last tournament. “They had fun and that’s what counts,” said Jack. “The first thing they said after was, ‘can’t wait to do this again next year.’”

Rainmakers show improvement By Kevin Campbell

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - A “drastic improvement” is what Charles Hays’ girls soccer coach Kyla Ragan called her team’s performance this past weekend and her description was more than apt. Despite losing their Saturday morning game against Terrace’s Caledonia Kermodes 2-0, the team had to have felt better about that match when comparing it to a bout two weeks ago, when the Rainmakers only had one substitute to work with and fell 6-0 in a game where Caledonia (CAL) got stronger as the match wore on. Charles Hays’ second game on Saturday against Kitimat’s Mount Elizabeth Secondary School (MESS) proved to be their strongest yet, as most of the forward corps and even their goaltender, Harjyot Sidhu, battled through some injuries to almost topple the visiting Eagles. “They’re all fighting through it,” said Ragan. “We’ll keep rotating players and keep them playing as long as we can.” A heartbreaking late goal by the Eagles erased the strongest half the Rainmakers have played yet and

elevated MESS to a 2-1 win, dropping the ‘Makers record to 0-2. Ten minutes into the match, standout forward Charlotte Kobza broke through Kitimat’s defence, cut to the middle and launched a shot from inside the box. The Eagles’ goalie got a piece of it, but the ball was too high for her outstretched arms and it deflected in just under the crossbar for the Rainmakers’ first lead of the season. That goal stood up until approximately 10 minutes later, when some nice ball control by the Eagles in Charles Hays’ zone led to furious pressure in Sidhu’s crease. The goalie leapt onto the ball to prevent MESS’ forwards from reaching it, but as Sidhu rose to her feet, the slippery ball fell from her hands, and Kitimat capitalized for the 1-1 tie at the half. But that didn’t discourage the home side, as right from the start of the whistle in the second half, the Rainmakers dominated, possessing the ball for minutes at a time in Kitimat’s end and earning six or seven corner kicks from their pressure up front. Suttira Johansen took every one of them and placed the ball in a flurry of blue and black shirts in the crease almost every time. Kobza, Johansen, Brittany

Waite, Reagan Pomponio, Tanveen Sahdra and Katerina Samaras formed a lethal forward group and forced the Kitimat netminder to make some outstanding saves to keep the game deadlocked at one goal apiece. Pomponio was tripped up on the right wing inside the box and earned herself a penalty kick, to which the Eagles’ goalkeeper made a good save on. Shortly after, a breakout by MESS resulted in a goal after a rising shot beat Sidhu. Overall, it was a terrific game for the ‘Makers despite the loss. “The girls are playing strong now. They’re playing as a team and they’re talking to each other. So we’re getting good plays out there,” said Ragan. “They know their strengths and what they’re working on, so they’re playing to their strengths ... positionally they know where each other are know and they know where to stop the ball and pass it to the spaces they’re supposed to, so that’s a drastic improvement from our last game even.” Some great midfield presence from Emily Cavin and Taylor Green and good sweeping duties from Medalana Jardim and stalwart defensive play from the back end helped the ‘Makers improve in ev-

at Terrace when they take on Caledonia, Mount Elizabeth and possibly Queen Charlotte and Smithers for the season’s second play day.
