Crews from the Wildfire Management Branch along with RCMP officers responded to a wildfire on the Mission Wycliffe Road just off Highway 95A on April 15. The fire was spreading through the grass and trees near several homes in Wycliffe area when crews arrived. Quick action by fire crews and the RCMP prevented the fire from damaging any homes. The fire spread over several acres and burned an old shed and shed prior to being brought under control. Several homeowners also assisted the crews. The combined effort of five RCMP Cranbrook and Kimberley officers, 11 Wildfire Management crew members and three or four homeowners prevented the fire from spreading and threatening other homes. The origin of the fire is unknown but it is not deemed suspicious at this time.

A driver traveling over 170 km per hour in Kimberley was given 30 days in jail after evading police. On April 14, just after midnight, Kimberley RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle south of Marysville travelling 127 in a 100 km zone. They activated their emergency equipment and the vehicle sped up to over 170 km and headed towards Cranbrook. Cranbrook RCMP members were provided with a description and began patrols. A short time later the vehicle was located on the Mission Wycliffe Road near St Eugene Resort. The driver was taken into custody without incident. The officers noted signs of alcohol consumption and obtained a breath sample which was a Warn. Police were able to gather

further evidence with respect to the dangerous driving and held the subject for court. It was also learned the subject was on conditions not to consume alcohol and obey a curfew. On April 15, Michael O’Grady, 24, from Edmonton, Alberta, attended court charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous Driving and Breach of Conditions times two. The judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail. In addition he was given a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for No Driver’s License, No Insurance and No License plate. “This was an excellent coordinated response between Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP officers who safely took the subject into custody with minimal risk to the public,” said Cpl Chris Newel of the Kimberley detachment.

Plans are off the ground for a 2016 airshow, with a special teaser this summer that will include flyovers of two vintage WWII planes — a twin-engine B25 “Mitchell” bomber, which visited Cranbrook last summer, and a B17 “Flying Fortress” bomber. “This is a new contractor we’re working with out of Calgary,” explained CAO Wayne Staudt at Monday’s meeting. “He’s prepared to do some preliminary activity in 2015, including getting the Snowbirds flying over and some other things.” The vintage planes will take to the air in mid-July, while the Snowbirds — accompanied by a a CF 18

fighter and a CF Buffalo aircraft — are scheduled for mid-August. Planning for the Canadian Rockies International Airshow is underway and on Wednesday, April 22, the Cranbrook International Airshow Society will meet at 7 p.m. at the old airport firehall. Darrell Garton, chair of the society, is inviting anyone interested to come to the meeting. They are looking for volunteers from all over the area and will be going over the details of the airshow plans. The Canadian Rockies International Airshow is planned for Aug. 5 and 6, 2016.

The City of Cranbrook was successful in obtaining matching funding through the province to continue with the WildSafeBC Community Coordinator program in 2015. The program has a specific focus on urban deer education and, similar to last year, the role will be split between Cranbrook and Kimberley. “We’ve done this in the past,” said CAO Wayne Staudt at Monday’s council meeting. “It’s a wildlife issue coordinator that we team up with the BC Conservation Foundation, Kimberley and ourselves. “We applied for some grant money and we’ve

been successful, so it’s just a heads up for council that we will be continuing on with this program again in 2015. It was very successful in 2014 — there was a lot of good feedback from the community.” The city’s Communications Office made the application to WildSafeBC back in January of 2015, expressing interest in participating in the 2015 program, pending the completion of the budget. On March 25, 2015, the Communications Office received an email from Jen Bellhouse, project coordinator with the BC Conservation Foundation.

Models get set to hit the catwalk at the 2014 Trashion Fashion show at the Tamarack Centre in Cranbrook. The annual event is set for Thursday, April 23. last time before he graduates. The students will be wearing their own pieces, but other students from middle or elementary schools have also participated in the past, Wilkinson added. “The students largely model their own work—we really encourage that,” said Wilkinson. “It’s more interesting, we don’t

need to look like models. “We are artists and want to look like artists.” Not to give away the surprise of the student’s work, but some of the materials used in the fashions include grocery bags and VHS tape. One student, who made a children’s dress out of used dryer sheets, expanded her project to

create a bridal dress. Wilkinson adds that the students take pride in their work. “They have come to expect it and I would say look forward to it,” she said. “…Some spend the duration of the year that are recyclable or not used any longer in their life and they’ll collect it in the means that it would make an interesting sculpted outfit.”

Nurses holding free adult vaccination clinics Tre vor Cr awley

Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccinations will be available at a pair of upcoming clinics, as part of Immunization Week at the end of April. On Wednesday, April 29, there will be an immunization clinic at McDonalds, running from 9-11 a.m., while Canadian Tire will host the next clinic on Thursday, April 30, from 12-2:30 p.m. Diane Cameron, a public health nurse, says the vaccines are two of the most basic immunizations that have been used for many years. “Tetanus is one of those things—and Diphtheria—that need to be boosted every 10 years for us to have our best protection,” Cameron said. “Even though we don’t see a lot of disease with those, it doesn’t mean those germs go away.” Cameron says the

tetanus bacteria lives in the soil, and that any time there is a dirty injury, such as a scrape or cut, there is potential for the bacteria to get into the body and cause disease. Diphtheria isn’t common, especially in Canada, but outbreaks can be mitigated by vaccination programs. “They’re always there, they’re not eradicated like small pox has been eradicated; they’re always there,” Cameron said. “The higher level of what they call herd immunity keeps the general population healthy.” Immunizations are available at the Public Health Unit, travel clinic and pharmacies, but the two clinics at McDonalds and Canadian Tire are also part of raising public awareness. “We’re just trying to make ourselves a little more visible out in the

community so that people are more familiar with the need to get that booster as an adult,” Cameron added. While people like to think that vaccination records are kept, that sometimes isn’t the case. Cameron urges people to be aware of their vaccination record, and notes that there is a free app for smartphones available for download at www.immunizebc.ca that will keep track of your vaccinations. “The basic thing with vaccines is they’re safe and they save lives. They’re a very tried and true way to protect family and communities,” Cameron said. “You start off by protecting yourself, but by protecting yourself, you protect your community and everybody around you—that’s what they mean when they talk about herd immunity.”

Volunteers have begun work to restore the historic brick building behind city hall once known as the Electrical and Waterworks Building constructed in 1936. The ornate, old structure was slated for demolition, but volunteers associated with the Cranbrook Heritage Association raised funds to restore and stabilize the building for future use. Karl Schmideder Jr., a local brick and masonry contractor, says he’ll probably be working on the building for at least month along with the volunteers, but adds it’s a labour of love. “If these walls could talk, I’m sure they would have many stories to tell.”

The August flyover will also include up to eight civilian aeronautical performers that will offer a sample of their performances. Among the civilian performers that will be participating in the teaser are several performers from the Discovery Channel television series “Airshow”. That includes series star “Super Dave” Mathieson. Additionally, the executive producer of Airshow, Mark Miller, a former resident of Cranbrook, will be in attendance this August to film the flyover as part of the television series. Back in April 2014, the City of Cranbrook was contacted by Garton, a Calgary-based airline contractor with a passion for airshows. He wanted to establish a new not-for-profit society for producing the Canadian Rockies International Airshow. The city noted that Garton is well connected in the airshow sector with extensive direct involvement in the production of airshows.

Garton has family ties to the Cranbrook area and is familiar with the Canadian Rockies International Airport (CRIA) as an airshow venue. City staff said that from the initial contact made to the city, the Tristan Chernove, Airport Managing Director and Kevin Weaver, Economic Development Officer for the city, have been working with Garton to advance the concept. In October 2015, an independent non-prof-

it-society was established for the airshow society. The society is planning for the August 5 and 6, 2016 dates for the airshow. It will feature civilian and military performers from across Canada and the U.S. The city is estimating the two day event will attract over 10,000 attendees. The city noted that significant planning still has to be undertaken by the society.

The net of religion ex- least the days of Augustine (354–430 CE), tends over questions of moral meaning that the Bible simply isn’t designed to ad-

dress scientific matters. To think that it does betrays an unfortunate ignorance about the nature of the Bible. Augustine wrote, “It is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian … talking nonsense on these [cosmological] topics, and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrassing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn. (In “The Literal Meaning of Genesis.”) That “disgraceful” treatment of Genesis is even less excusable today than in Augustine’s day. The Bible and science have grown even further apart. We don’t know everything, but we certainly know a lot more both about how the universe works, and how ancient stories of origins work. Many such ancient stories exist, and we don’t read any of them (outside the Bible) as historical records. To think that the Bible is somehow immune from its ancient cultural influence is a blind assertion that carries no weight at all. Gould notes correctly that “Creationism is a homegrown phenomenon of American sociocultural history—a splinter movement (unfortunately rather more of a beam these days) of Protestant fundamentalists who believe that every word of the Bible must be literally true.” Until just over 100 years ago, no Christian ever read the Bible that way. Creationism has neither any scientific basis, nor any basis in faith. Pope John Paul 2 noted in his 1996 statement that “Truth Cannot Contradict Truth.” He writes that the last 50 years have seen such a remarkable convergence among scientists about the truth of evolutionary science that we can “celebrate nature’s factuality and look forward to interesting discussions of the theological implications of the veracity of evolution.” Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

There, they joined a large crowd gathered to honour the memory of Lieutenant Thomas Henry “Harry” Banfield, late of the 103rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, who died in action in France three weeks previously. Harry Banfield, age 41, was well-known in Cranbrook. A partner in the contracting firm of Baker and Banfield, he not only contributed to the construction of numerous houses of Cranbrook following his arrival in the city in 1907, but was also a former alderman and a property owner of note. He was older than many of the local WWI boys but by the time he enlisted in January, 1916, the army was willing to overlook age in order to fill their ever-decreasing numbers, especially as Harry had done well on his officer training course in the months prior to his enlistment. Reverend W. H. Bridge: gave the sermon that day saying, in part “We have met to do honor to the memory of a fallen brother — one of a great host, one who held a place in our hearts and affections. We cannot but think of him first as a man, a son, a citizen, somebody’s boy — and for the sake of these things, to uphold the honor of these things, a soldier.” He was indeed somebody’s

Canadian soldiers consolidating their position at Vimy Ridge, April, 1917. boy, the son of Thomas and Harriet Banfield of Somerset, England. One of five brothers and sisters, unmarried, five feet seven inches tall and weighing 134 pounds, Harry Banfield sailed from Halifax harbour on July 23, 1916, arriving in Liverpool, England, on the 31st. He joined his unit in France on March 31, 1917, and died nine days later on Vimy Ridge. A letter of May 31, from Captain J.J. Martin, describes both his death and that of his good friend and former Cranbrook resident Major Bert Black as occurring while Lt. Banfield was moving his men back from a forward position raked by German machine gun fire. He was hit while covering the retreat. A lad named Ashcroft from Vernon, B.C., attempted to dress hit wounds but it was too late. Ashcroft was fatally struck by a sniper soon afterwards. Major Black, wounded three times, died on April 12. Captain Martin stated “Black and Banfield are gone. They died fighting for home and liberty.” Lt. Banfield and Major Black were just two of the Cranbrook men who died during the battle for Vimy Ridge. It was a battle that saw, for the first time, the combined Canadian forces attack as one. It was notable victory, a victory said to

have given birth to the unification of Canada as a country. The source of great national pride undoubtedly, the birth of a unified country perhaps, but the wounding, maiming and death of over 10,000 Canadian soldiers. It was, in the grand scheme of things, just one of many battles in the big Allied push in that spring of 1917. The men who fought it had little idea of its import to their nation. They fought and died in a muddy, bloody morass of metallic thunder and man-made lightning. They, among the 3,598 Canadians killed during the battle, never knew the contribution they made. They died there, on Vimy Ridge and lay now among their slain comrades on the gentle, grassy fields that were once the very picture of Armageddon itself. Among the dead were other Cranbrook boys. For most their memorial services were not as grand as that of Lt. Banfield. By 1917, death had become commonplace. There are 166 names on the Cranbrook cenotaph; the city suffered, on average, one death every nine-and-a-half days over the course of the four years of the war. Cranbrook was a much smaller community then and by 1917, local services for the dead were a tragically common fact of life.

Among the others, Private Harold Cadwallader, age 23, and his younger brother Private Lawson Cadwallader, age 21, died within one day of each other. The sons of Welsh contractor Thomas Cadwallader and his wife Sarah, Harold worked for local dry goods merchant I. R. Manning before his enlistment in late 1915, while Lawson was a driver for the Cranbrook Trading Co. before he joined up in June 1916. In a letter to the parents, the regiment’s chaplain wrote that Lawson was killed instantaneously by a shell and that he died without suffering. It was a standard refrain in communications of the sort, perhaps it was the truth. The Cadwalladers received the letter almost a month after his death. News was slow to travel from the battlefield to the hometown. Of his brother Harold there appears no indication of how he died save that he was killed in action. The Cadwallader family moved away shortly thereafter. Lt. Harry Banfield, Privates Lawson Cadwallader and Private Harold Cadwallader are buried in separate cemeteries. They died at Vimy Ridge; they are buried in France, they live in the shadows of our town. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Let the search begin Kootenay Ice mutually part with head coach Ryan McGill

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

When the puck drops on the 2015-16 WHL season, there will be a fresh face behind the bench for the Kootenay Ice. After three seasons calling the shots, head coach Ryan McGill is on the way out after he and the team mutually agreed to part ways upon the expiration of his contract June 30, 2015. “Every coach has a shelf life,” said Jeff Chynoweth, Kootenay Ice president and general manager, Thursday morning. “I just look at the way our team is and the way we’re turning over for next year. We’re going to be one of the youngest teams in the league and I just think we need a new voice.” The search for a new head coach begins and with 11 total 1995-born players on the roster, there stands to be significant turnover and a youthful infusion in the player-personnel department, which factors into the process. “There are always lots of candidates. There are coaches at every level of hockey,” Chynoweth said. “We’ve just got to make sure we get the right one. That’s a tough puzzle to put together. For us, we definitely have some ideas in mind of what we’re looking for and as the process goes along, we’ll take our time and see if we can get the right fit for our hockey club. “Teaching is always important, especially when you’re dealing with today’s young players…Teaching and communication are always very important, whoever you hire in any position in your organization, not

just the head coach.” Chynoweth said resumes and applications have already begun flowing in for the soonto-be vacated head coaching position, but he is in no rush to find the sixth coach in franchise history. “We’ll sit down when the time is right and start the process,” Chynoweth said. “But we’re in no rush to make a decision. “We don’t put a timeframe on it.” McGill was the second coach in franchise history, first joining the club during its final days in Edmonton, replacing Dave Siciliano midway through the 1997-98 campaign. The 46-yearold native of Sherwood Park, Alta., remained with the Ice through the 2001-02 season, guiding the franchise to a pair of WHL titles (2000 and 2002) as well as a Memorial Cup championship (2002). McGill departed following the 2002 season, moving into head coaching roles at the American Hockey League level (Hartford Wolf Pack, 2002-03 through 200405; Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights/ Quad City Flames, 2005-06 through 2008-09) before joining the Calgary Flames as an assistant coach (2009-10 through 2010-11). During his absence, Cory Clouston (five seasons), Mark Holick (three seasons) and Kris Knoblauch (two seasons) found their way in and out of Cranbrook. McGill returned for his second stint at the onset of the 2012-13 campaign. The 2014-15 WHL season marked the third in his second tour of duty with the club. The Ice wrapped the season

RB Peterson reinstated by NFL Jon Kr awcz ynski Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - The NFL has reinstated Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, clearing the way for him to return after missing most of last season while facing child abuse charges in Texas. The league announced its decision on Thursday. Commissioner Roger Goodell sent Peterson a letter advising him of his reinstatement. Goodell wrote that Peterson will have to fulfil all the obligations of his plea deal with authorities after he reached a plea deal to reduce a felony charge to a misdemeanour.

rial Cup championship, McGill was also named WHL Coach of the Year following the 2012-13 campaign, leading into his role as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. While McGill’s tenure in Cranbrook has come to a close for the second time, three other mem-

bers of Chynoweth’s hockey-operations staff also face expiring contracts. Assistant coach Jay Henderson, athletic therapist Cory Cameron and director of scouting Garnet Kazuik all see their contracts expire June 30 as well. Chynoweth’s hope is to retain all three moving forward.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Twelve years ago, my son moved his girlfriend into our home. “Lena” lived with us for four years, and we treated her like family. They broke up, and Lena moved out. She then married someone else and now has an adorable 6-year-old daughter. We have remained such good friends with her that my husband walked her down the aisle at her wedding. My son is now 30 and has never married. Unfortunately, his current girlfriend is demanding that we sever all ties with Lena, and she is causing problems for us with our son. We have tried to reassure them both that the old flame is no threat to their new romance, but it hasn’t helped. We live in a very small town where everyone knows each other. Is it fair for us to be treated this way? -- Mom Dear Mom: Of course not, but that doesn’t solve the problem. The new girlfriend is terribly insecure and needs to control everyone around her, including you. She doesn’t realize how her attitude damages her relationship with you. Your son permits this because he wants to keep seeing her, and as long as he does so, you will need to limit your contact with Lena in order to have a relationship with your son. We only hope he doesn’t marry this girl. She sounds like a major headache. Dear Annie: My husband is a girl watcher. I find it very hurtful that I can’t keep his attention. He is constantly looking around, and when he zeroes in on some young blonde with a great figure, he repeatedly stares at her. I have confronted him a few times about this habit, and he denies that he is doing it. Am I being irrationally jealous? Do I need to just get over it? Everything else at home seems fine. -- Want Him To Look Only at Me Dear Want: Your husband’s behavior is boorish, but not threatening. Most guys look. The problem is, he is so blatant about it that it becomes disrespectful to you. If he truly does not realize he is doing this, you need to call his attention to it. Behavior modification can work. Smile and say calmly, “I see you’re checking out the blonde at that table. She is pretty. But you are a bit obvious when you keep staring.” He may deny it, but because he knows you can tell, he should be more willing to admit that his technique needs work. It is important not to become angry or annoyed. Your goal is to get him to notice his own behavior enough to control it. We don’t believe he means to hurt you. As long as he isn’t approaching these women and attempting to get a date, please try to be tolerant until he matures. Dear Annie: This is for “Stuck in the Midwest,” who wants to convince her husband to move to a warmer climate. She should get on Google Maps and show him the street view of all the places in her “new city.” -- Tried It Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
