The vehicle was located and officers conducted a high risk “take down” during which three people were taken into custody without incident. A search of their vehicle subsequent to the arrest resulted in police locating and seizing two sawed off firearms and related ammunition. College of the Rockies hosted 48 grade nine students from the region on Wednesday, April 9th for a full day of tradesrelated activities. The event saw students from Cranbrook, Jaffray, Fernie and Elkford gathered

at the Cranbrook main campus as part of the YES 2 IT (Youth Exploring Skills to Industry Training) program. Students had the opportunity to practice their wood and metalworking skills in the

carpentry shop building bookshelves before trying their hand at wiring lights and switches in the electrical shop. The day concluded with a competition in nailing spikes into a beam. Prior to the shop activities, WorksafeBC Safety Officer Jeff McKay gave a vivid presentation on workplace hazards, safe practices, and the rights

of young workers. College of the Rockies welding, carpentry, and electrical instructors, along with grade 12 ACE IT students and apprentices provided instruction and mentoring for the participants. College of the Rockies’ Regional Transition Coordinator Brian Conrad says, “This was an excellent event that

was useful in exposing students to and exciting them about the skilled trades prior to their entry into senior secondary. It was also an opportunity to showcase what trades opportunities are available to them at the College of the Rockies.” To learn more about trades programs at College of the Rockies, go to: cotr.ca/trades.

One simple step to better health

Every spring I feel a renewed urge to take steps to improve my health. If you are feeling the same urge, here is one simple step you can take to that will make a significant change to your overall health: limit your sugar intake by drinking water instead of juices and sodas. Excess sugar consumption is associated with insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and increased blood pressure. Let’s not forget about how sugar can also affect energy, mood, concentration and sleep. Sugar is tricky, it is so easy to consume too much without knowing it. One regular can of Pepsi contains 10.5 teaspoons of sugar while one 15 oz bottle of Minute Maid apple juice contains 12 teaspoons. There are large quantities of sugar in energy and sports drinks too. Science has identified added sugars as a primary factor underlying the development of chronic disease and it doesn’t matter if this added sugar comes from soups or candies. Over the last 10 years we have become increasingly aware of the dangers of sugar overconsumption. As a result, soda sales have

slowly declined however the sugary sodas have been replaced with diet sodas and these are troublesome too. A recent study followed seniors over 9 years and found that the average waist circumference in people who never drank diet soda increased by 0.8 inches while occasional diet soda drinkers added 1.83 inches. Daily diet soda drinkers added a whopping 3.2 inches to their middle. Marketing and a healthy concern about sugar intake has made us believe that choosing a diet sweetener is better when in fact the artificial sweeteners are also counterproductive to health. Other sweeteners like agave syrup, honey and maple syrup are also sources of sugar and need to be consumed in moderation. If you have a metabolic disease like diabetes, elevated blood pressure, heart disease or obesity you should keep your sugar intake below 15 grams daily. To put this in perspective, an apple has 10 grams while a banana has 12. Sugars add up fast and to improve your health you really have to be on the bit. For those who are healthy, a good first step is to stop drinking juice and soda.

Raised bed workshops

Environmental heroes on Earth Day 2015 PHOTO SUBMITTED

Be an environmental hero this coming April 22.

“It’s the right thing to do if it would make the world a better place if everybody were to do it.” Whether you look at it as a moral lesson or as an environmental road map, that adage captures the essence of Earth Day, which takes place on April 22, 2015. Every year, the environmental charity Earth Day Canada recognizes individuals who inspire us all to make the right choices. These Hometown Heroes volunteer their time and resources to protect the environment, educate their peers in sustainability or bring about sustainable change in their communities. Young British Columbian Jacqueline Shen was a 2014 Hometown Hero winner and role model. She headed up the Burnaby Yo uth Su stainability Network, wh ich br ings together Burnaby teens in environment-saving volunteer opportunities and sustainability conferences. One of her strategies for engaging people is to ask them about how they look at the trash they produce. “When you look at a plastic bottle, what do you see?” she asks. “We’re doing pretty well here in B.C.; nearly 75 per cent of bottles are returned.

But why do we (buy things we want to) throw away, whether it’s to the recycling depot or to the landfill?” It’s a good question, and it may lead to a different choice the next time you’re thirsty on a warm day. Would you like to be an environmental hero who works to create change in your home and in your

hometown? Even the smallest gesture is heroic when it comes to the environment: shop locally; reduce; reuse and recycle. And if you want to go bigger, contact an environmental organization to see how you can help them create positive change.

Do you have an old wreck laying around?

With the gardening season upon us, Cranbrook Food Action Committee and Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook are pleased to announce that Luke Kimmel will be teaching 2 workshops: “Wicked Raised Beds” on April 25th 10am-4pm at the Cranbrook Public Produce Garden and 26th at the Kimberley Open Gate Garden. The cost is $45 per person, with volunteer bursaries available for those who are restricted by the price. Wicking beds are a unique and increasingly popular way to grow vegetables. They are self-contained raised beds with built-in water reservoirs. Water is wicked from the reservoir up into the soil, making these beds self-watering with increased water efficiency. Because they are raised beds, they warm up more quickly in the spring, have good drainage, and are more ergonomic with less need for bending to maintain. To register or find out more information about the workshop visit www.wildsight.ca/kimcran or call (250)427-2535 Option 2. Register soon to avoid disappointment. This is a great way to get your gardening season started.

Recycling 101 - The Basics

Recycling Electronics & Appliances

You can use ANY yellow bin in the East Kootenay. Here are some quick tips to remember when recycling: • All plastics MUST be clean and have a number between 1 and 6. That number must be in the triangular recycling symbol. If there is no number, it should go in the garbage if it can’t be reused. • All plastic grocery/shopping bags can be recycled -- even if they don’t have a number on them. This is the only item that can be recycled if it doesn’t have a number. All other plastics must be numbered • Styrofoam CANNOT be recycled in yellow bins (even though its marked #6), but can go to the MMBC packaging area at the Cranbrook Bottle Depot. • Tin cans should be well rinsed with labels removed, if possible. • Cardboard should be flattened to save bin space. • All paper products can go in the yellow bins (and Fernie & Invermere blue bag program) -- including hard and soft cover books. Foil covered or waxy papers cannot be recycled. Milk cartons can be taken to the MMBC Packaging area at the Cranbrook Bottle Depot for recycling.

The “environmental handling fee” you pay on electronics in BC are managed by Encorp and a wide range of electronics are accepted for recycling.

Both your alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable, as well as cellphones are recyclable.

The electronics & small appliance recycling depots for the East Kootenay are: Cranbrook Bottle Depot Fernie Bottle Depot 1125 Industrial Rd #3, Cranbrook 1291 Ridgemont Avenue, Fernie Phone: 250-423-2009 Phone: 250-417-0306
