Celebrated authors tour Northern BC

Vancouver poet Kayla Czaga, author of For Your Safety Please Hold On, has been shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Czaga is part of the Northern BC speaking tour for BC Book Prizes which celebrates British Columbian writers’ achievements. Czaga spoke to FSJ Secondary students during the tour on April 16.

Students at David Hoy Elementary and Fort St. James Secondary received a visit from two BC Book Prize finalists this past week. Gabrielle Prendergast and Kayla Czaga are touring Northern BC presenting their works through talks and reading their books with students at both schools. The authors are two of 35 authors, illustrators and publishers selected as finalists for the seven prizes that are awarded through BC Book Prizes. Bryan Pike, Executive Director with BC Book Prizes and the tour’s driver, said the showcase is a way for kids to see that books come from more than just the library. “It’s a great chance for (students) to hear an author talk,” he said. “Kayla, who is on tour right now, she’s from Kitimat … You don’t have to climb Mt. Everest or be in a war to write a story. It’s good for kids to see

that, those types of things are valuable.” Pike said the authors read from their books and share personal experiences with students, and said often the talks trigger an interest in reading with students. “It’s a nice way for everybody to get a little inspiration.” Kayla Czaga, author of For Your Safety Please Hold On (Nightwood Editions), is a finalist shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize an award for the author of the best work of poetry. Czaga spoke at FSJ Secondary School to the Grade 11 and 12 English students April 16. The 23-year-old shared her perspectives on growing up and living in Kitimat, B.C. Czaga brought a unique point of view that the students were easily able to relate to, sharing poetry on being 15, her nudist father, that drunk uncle and living in a town with only one road in and out. “When I was in high school I never thought I would write about high school … now, I have an outside perspective,” Czaga told the students. “I never

really know what I’m going to write about until I write a line about a memory that happened years back, then it turns into a poem.” Czaga relates her positive point of view to students about making the choice to become a writer and being able to make a living as a writer living in Vancouver. “It is something that you can achieve.” Gabrielle Prendergast, author of Capricious (Orca Book Publishers), is a finalist shortlisted for the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, an award for the author of the best original work of literary fiction. Prendergast spoke to Grade 6 and 7 students at David Hoy Elementary on April 16. She pulls the quiet group of students into conversation by talking about current books that have been made into movies and engaging students on their favourite reads. She has a way of getting the students talking by relating to writing at the student’s level. Cont. on page 2

“When a movie or a book is about a young person, it’s not normally about someone who just gets up, eats breakfast and goes to school, comes home, plays video games, eats dinner and then goes to bed,” Prendergast says. “There’s nothing wrong with being an ordinary kid … but on the other hand you know, it’s not exciting like it is in a book.” Prendergast uses the students’ interests in movies, sports and various activities to offer advice about approaching life with the kind of adventure you might find in books and how a character might approach life. “That’s a good way to approach your life, like you’re a person in a story book,” she said. “Attack it with gusto.”

Trading the Arctic for a more Northern experience MICHELE TAYLOR Caledonia Courier

Reporters have this recurring theme; pile what little of your life you can fit in your car and head for new adventures. Well, ten years in the chill, dark claws of Yellowknife’s Arctic winters had my feet itching to explore new places so I did just that, packed up the car and headed to one of the warmest places I could find in Canada – Fort St. James, B.C. Honestly, I am a northern girl at heart and northern B.C., always seems to pull me back here. The area and its people is exactly the kind of community I am used to experiencing in the Northwest Territories. There is this network that happens when you live in some of the coldest, most remote places in Canada; people find ways to keep warm in the dark cold of winter and they know how to take care of one another. I’ve already been asked a number of times, “Are you living in Fort St. James?” You bet. I’m here, and from what I’ve already been fortunate enough to experience, Fort St. James has that

same sense of community, that network that holds you all together. I am a mother of three lovely girls and a grand mother of two, so I am interested in healthcare, education and community issues. I am also a writer, photographer and artist with a tiny speckling of musical ‘talent’ thrown in for good measure so I am interested in the arts scene in the communities. I spent the first seventeen years of my life growing up and being educated in British Columbia before heading to Alberta for 17 years and then up to the North. I have lived from the north end of Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert and in-between, so it’s somewhat of a homecoming for me being in northern B.C. I am working on my third stage of a (now) lifelong news and media on-the-job training program. I started out as a photo editor in the Yellowknife newsroom back in 2005; then moved to editorial production, putting all the pages together for four of the seven publications produced at NNSL. Now, I am in my third and most interesting stage of train-

Important Notice to Resource Road Users A province wide, safety-oriented project is underway to standardize two-way radio communications on forest service roads and some resource roads. This project includes standardized signage, new dedicated resource road radio channels and standardized call procedures. The Fort St. James and Vanderhoof Districts (Stuart Nechako Natural Resource District), along with other districts in the Southern and Northern Interior, will begin implementing new resource road radio channels commencing on June 1, 2015. Districts on the Coast and in the Cariboo have already transitioned or are currently transitioning. Forest industry workers and other road users using mobile radios must have their radios reprogrammed to incorporate the new resource road channels. It is recommended that road users retain current radio frequencies until they are sure they are no longer required. New signs posted on local resource roads indicate which radio channel to use and the calling interval, with drivers required to indicate their direction of travel and their vehicle type. Drivers using mobile radios must call according to the posted channels and call protocols. All road users are reminded that forest service roads are not radio-controlled, but radio-assisted. All users should drive safely and according to road and weather conditions. It is strongly recommended that all resource road users exercise additional caution during this transition period. Local resource road safety committees have worked together to implement these changes. More information (including radio communications protocols, radio channels, maps and standardized signs) is available online at: www.for.gov.bc.ca/hth/engineering/Road_Radio_Project.htm If you have questions about this project, please contact the Stuart Nechako Natural Resource District, Vanderhoof office at 1 250-567-6363, Fort St James office at 1 250-996-5200 (Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations), the website above, or Industry Canada at 1 800 667-3780.

Mike Navratil, Fire Chief with the Fort St. James and District Fire Department had a few words of advice about burning brush or grass in the upcoming weeks. Navratil wanted to make sure if residents are planning to burn on their property to note wind conditions in an effort to ensure fires don’t get out of control. He also suggested having

tools and a working garden hose atthe-ready in case the fire should get away from you, and asks that you stay on-site and have extra help tending the area while burning. Navratil advises to use the necessary precautions while burning, he stated in an e-mail and reminds people that any burning in the District of Fort St. James requires a permit. He also stated all (garbage/debris) should be contained and burned in a pit or barrel.

Courier Volume of real estate sales slightly down across the region FLAVIO NIENOW Lakes District News

The B.C. Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reported 856 sales with a value of $213,161,426 through the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in the first quarter of 2015. This compares with 1005 sales worth $248,635,086 to the end of March, 2014. As of March 31, 2015, there were 4023 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS® compared to 3625 at this time last year. President David Black comments, “Although the volume of sales was down slightly across BCNREB area, in the first quarter of 2015, the regions more closely associated with the oil and gas industry, the Northeast and North Coast experienced a more significant drop, year over

year. This can be attributed to the uncertainty with the long term effects of lower oil prices.” “Consumers must remember that overall, the economy of the northern half of the province is still strong and there are billions of dollars in potential developments which could benefit from lower oil costs and better availability of tradespeople. This coupled with historically low interest rates, affordable housing prices and increased inventory makes this a good time to consider making real estate investments or buying a new home,” he added. In Burns Lake, 19 properties worth $1.5 million have changed hands since Jan. 1, 2015. For the same period in 2014, 15 properties worth $1.7 million changed hands. At the end of March 2015, there were 128 properties of all types available

for sale through the MLS® in the Burns Lake area. For the same period in 2014, there were 124. In Smithers, Realtors® reported 55 sales with a value of $14.1 million to March 31, 2015. This compares to 65 sales with a value of $12.8 million for the same period in 2014. In addition to the 22 single family homes that sold, three parcels of vacant land, 14 homes on acreage and two manufactured homes on land changed hands this year. At the end of the first quarter of 2015 there were 245 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS® in the Smithers area. In 2014, there were 213. In Vanderhoof, Realtors® reported 10 sales worth $1.9 million in the first quarter of 2015. This compares to 18 sales worth $3 million in the first
