Former Target employees burn their shirts wide Canadian closure March 16. They also came to toss their distinctive red Target uniform T-shirts into the flames. “In native cultures, burning is a healing,” said Jacquie Creaser, a former Target manager who helped organize the gathering. “It’s closure; there’s no bitterness or anger.” Generally, it was a cheerful and upbeat gathering, with participants ranging from gleeful to somber as they fed their shirts to the flames. For the former employees of Campbell River’s Target store, a memorial gathering on the beach Monday evening was much more a wake than it was a funeral. But they still had their pyre. More than 50 people, including 40-plus former em ployees, came together around a Willow Point bonfire to enjoy a spot of food and drink, and to reminisce about their time together at the local store before it was shuttered in a chain-

bulk of HBC company’s Zeller’s outlets and eventually opening more than 130 Target stores north of the border. Less than two years after the first stores were opened in March of 2013, Target Canada on Jan. 15 filed for bankruptcy and announced the impending closure of all locations — and left thousands out of work. Justin Fecteau, who began working at the local store even before it opened, said he gave notice one week before he would have been eligible for a two-month severance package.

Target: many have found work “But I got a good job at Marine Harvest, so everything worked out in the end,” he said. Others in the crowd at the beach Monday have also found work while some remain unemployed. Among the latter, some have not yet begun jobseeking in earnest, like Creaser, who remained with Target two weeks after the store closed to help with liquidation and demolition. Another sub-group was marking its second layoff from the same location, having worked at Zellers

before its purchase by Target Canada. Rather than being retained, they had to apply for jobs in the new store. Together, Creaser said, the Target employees made up a unique team. One she wanted to gather for one more huddle. “I planned this so we would have a remembrance,” she said of the bonfire. “The burning is just a side effect, a cleansing. “We’re not bitter. We’re grieving; we wish we were still working there. I’ve been in management for 15 years and never had a better job.”

nutrition, the emotional environment a woman is growing a baby in, has a profound impact on what potential that child comes into the world with and how they best use that potential. “While we take charge of children beginning at age four-and-a-half or five, so much of the critical work is being done before they enter our doors.” Franklin added that the report provides not only baseline information, but an impetus for community stakeholders to act to improve the statistics, either individually or collectively. That may take the form of a service club tackling a single area of concern, or municipal government using the information to help guide policy decisions on playgrounds, public gardens, food security issues, fresh water and more.

a starting point in terms of data, then set goals based on the data we have now,” board trustee Richard Franklin said. “For example, if you look here you see that 22.8 per cent of children less than six years old live in poverty in Campbell River. There’s a lot of room for improvement. “But it will take a community working together, with all the partners, to develop a plan that will improve that.” Many of the areas of concern raised by the report will need to be addressed well before these children enter the halls of local schools. But improving outcomes in early development can only aid the work of educators down the road, McMann said. “What we know now is the trajectory for success for children is often set before they’re born,” she said. “The kind of food,

Our View

Let’s resolve to save Earth

Many of us make new year’s resolutions every Jan. 1 and by now, most of them are broken and forgotten. So why not start anew, this week, with Earth Day resolutions? Today is Earth Day, and as there aren’t really any mainstream traditions that comprise the celebrations, we are free to decide how to mark the occasion. We might get a few million years on this planet, if we’re careful, and each of us gets to live here for 81.25 of those years. It doesn’t seem too much to ask, for us to keep it clean and tidy while we’re here, and We say: Make a wouldn’t it be a good new resolution and worthy thing to do this year on to leave it better off than when we arrived? Are Earth Day future generations going to see the Strait of Georgia the way we imagine it to be, pristine, wild, beautiful? Or will it be another polluted waterway, like too many around the world, that have become outfalls of human waste and selfishness, where we wouldn’t dream of even dipping our toes. If we’re not going to stop making single-occupancy commutes in our SUVs, then maybe we can earn a carbon credit some other way, by cleaning a stream or planting a tree or improving our recycling efforts. It is our choice to save the world or not, but there is some responsibility, we think, to leave it in good enough condition so that future generations will have that choice, too. —Black Press

Letters n Mailbox debate getting stale I have been following with great interest the storm brewing over Canada Post’s move to change us all to corner mailboxes. I’d write “LOL” somewhere here, but “guffaw” is more fitting of my reaction. Here’s why. My wife, son and I moved from Edmonton to Whitehorse in 1986, where we had a rural route address and a green box a ways down the road. We left Whitehorse in late 1992 for a short stint back in Edmonton, where we again enjoyed home delivery. Then, in February, 1993, we moved to Southern California, whereupon we again lost our home delivery. Two and a half years later we returned to Canada and took up residence in Campbell River, where we gladly find ourselves today. We have never in the 20+ years we’ve been here had home delivered mail. In fact, in the nearly 30 years we’ve spent living in different parts of western North America since moving to the Yukon, we’ve enjoyed home delivery for a grand total of around seven months. Now, I do share concerns about access for some and employment for others. However, I do have to say that, unless the campaign moves to eliminate corner boxes altogether and return home delivery to all of Canada, I just cannot get enthused about the matter. Land sales leave lingering odour The B.C. Liberal government’s sale of Crown properties to help balance its election budget was the dominant story in the legislature last week, as the NDP revealed evidence of a “fire sale” that may have left millions on the table. They started with Burke Mountain, the biggest single deal involving 14 view properties in Coquitlam. The buyer was a prominent developer whose array of companies happened to donate nearly $1 million to the B.C. Liberal Party since 2000. The $85 million price tag was similar to the B.C. Assessment Authority value on these forested properties, but an outside appraisal concluded they could have fetched an additional $43 million if they had spent more time on the hot Lower Mainland real estate market. (This sale made headlines last fall for the province’s $8 million buyout of the local First Nation’s undefined territorial claim, when it was revealed the chief of the tiny Kwikwitlem First Nation pocketed an $800,000 commission.)

The appraiser also recommended that the “highest and best use” for the Surrey land was to hold it until had been rezoned for commercial, retail or office development. But it’s now clear that these and perhaps other sales were done with arbitrary deadlines that had everything to do with the B.C. Liberals’ need to balance the books. It’s also worth recalling that the budget deficits prior to the 2013 election were largely a result of the B.C. government’s costly undoing of the harmonized sales tax, rather than the harsh forces of international finance. Surplus asset sales have a long tradition in B.C., where the government owns more than 90 per cent of all land. But after this round, full disclosure will be demanded. Turf could pose a health threat I am interested in the controversy regarding the installation of tire crumb based artificial turf and have done some research. Every parent, grandparent, coach, taxpayer and anyone else who has an interest in this matter should do so. To say it was an eyeopener would be an understatement. I could not believe the health and environmental hazards associated with this material. A few of the hazards follow and there are more – but you get the idea. Each playing field is comprised of 120 tons (up to 20,000) of finely ground road tires, which give off a cocktail of chemicals. n The artificial surface contributes to injuries including turf burn and extremity injuries. n Breathing problems have been reported, as the finely ground up tire material is readily inhaled – particularly problematic for asthma suffers. n Increased MRSA risk (which is a highly contagious antibiotic resistant staph bacterial infection) and other bacterial infections, because the surface is more hospitable to bacterial longevity. n Exposure to arsenic, lead, zinc, cadmium, selenium, chromium,

phthalates (which affect reproductive organs). n The risk of severe health problems such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when exposed to the tire crumbs from which the turf is made. These fields are being questioned all over the world. The following are some examples. n The Italian Minister of Health has found them potentially carcinogenic. n Both the Centre for Disease Control and Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Centre have issued warnings. n Norway has banned artificial turf. n The Union of European Football Associations ordered their finals to take place on natural grass. n New York city parks have forbidden the installation of any new artificial turf fields pending resolution of potential hazards. So has the Los Angeles School District. Both of these cities say the health of those who use the playing fields come first. n The NFL Players Association is concerned about artificial turf because of greater tendency to aggravate injury. n T h e Sw e d i s h Chemical agency recommended that tire waste not be used because it releases haz-

ardous material. n Holland has found lead, zinc and other chemical leaching to be a problem. n Korea is investigating multiple complaints of breathing problems and eye irritation. Artificial turf requires more maintenance than commonly thought, as it is prone to developing moulds, algae and moss. It requires regular applications of algaecides and moss removers. Any leaves, twigs, needles etc. need constant maintenance to remove as they contribute to algae and moss growth. Supposedly this turf has a 25-year lifetime. This has not been proven, as it has not been used on playing fields for that long. If allegations against tire crumb based fields are proven to be true, these fields may have to be removed. Extensive work is required to return the fields to their former conditions. The cons outweigh the pros. Do you really want your children and grandchildren or yourself playing on a surface that could cause harm? Do you really want to take these risks just to have fewer sports cancellation times? There are safer sandbased alternatives available. Is this the type

Campbell River is considering? It would be more expensive, but is supposed to be preferable health-wise. There are also hardier natural turfs that could be an option. Putting in tire crumb based fields now, just because other Island communities have, is not a good enough reason. Maybe they were put in before much was known about the negative aspects. Maybe they just had really good artificial turf sales people. Voters already turned down these fields. Could the city be at risk of being sued if players are injured or become ill? Perhaps this very important issue should be revisited before any further action is taken.

I read the letter from the person who put the note on the roaming cat and can sympathize. Not only are cats annoying when they dig up your garden and leave their feces but they are also one of the biggest causes of the decline in song birds in North America. Our garden is a haven for birds but a couple of cats sneak in. We have two dogs and the other morning they ran out and caught one of those cats. There was a big commotion and I could see the cat trying to get over the fence. It managed to get away unhurt. I would have felt bad if my dog had hurt or killed that cat and I would have tried to find its owners. I did wonder if they might have blamed me even though their cat was in my yard. This is a sensitive time for birds as they build nests and raise young. Keep your cats inside and give them a chance. -Barbara Swanston

Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world with new cases exceeding 640,000 annually. Yet despite advances in technology and treatment the long term survival rate of 63 per cent after five years has improved only marginally over the last two decades.

In the U.S., more than 100,000 people are diagnosed each year with oral, head and neck cancers claiming approximately 14,000 lives per year. In Canada, more than 4,000 individuals are diagnosed each year with oral cancer and more than 1,000 will die from it. According to the BC Cancer Agency, in BC between 2013 and 2028 there will be a 48% increase in Oral Cancer cases and a 16% increase in death due to Oral Cancer. Traditionally, oral cancer has been associated with tobacco usage and the majority of oral cancer victims smoke or use chewing tobacco, consume alcohol, and are over 40. These cancers are usually found within the “One call, and we’ll do it all”

oral cavity, sides of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. But...the group experiencing the highest growth rate of oral cancer incidence does not fit this traditional “at risk” profile. More a n d m ore , oral cancer is striking younger people who don’t use tobacco or abuse alcohol. In many cases the cause appears to be one of two strains of the Human Papilloma Virus, HPV-16 and HPV-18. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. and likely the world. These cancers are found in the back of the throat around/behind the tonsils and the base of the tongue. Early indicators of oral cancer may include red and/or white discolourations on the soft tissues of the mouth, any sore that doesn’t heal within 14 days, or hoarseness which lasts for a prolonged period of time. Advanced signs can include difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving your tongue, a feeling that something is caught in your throat, changes to your voice, a lump on your neck, ear pain on one side only, or a sore/

lump under a denture that doesn’t heal even after adjustments. When diagnosed early, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications and the five-year survival rate increases to 80 per cent. Being screened for oral cancer takes less than 15 minutes. It includes a Head and Neck exam which inspects/palpates (feels) the face, neck, collar bones and an examination inside the mouth inspecting the soft tissue, palate, and back of the throat. Local dental hygienists are ready to to do a screening for you May 2nd. Further information about oral cancer, HPV and smoking cessation will be provided at the screenings. Living legend performs at Tidemark Theatre

Buffy Sainte-Marie is on tour to support the release of her bold new album, Power in the Blood. Sainte-Marie is known for her 1960s protest anthems (“Universal Soldier”), open-hearted love songs (“Until It’s Time for You to Go”), incendiar y powwow rock (“Starwalker”), and juggernaut pop hit “Up Where We Belong,” which Sainte-Marie cowrote and Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes sang. One of her earliest classics, “Cod’ine,” a harrowing account of addiction well ahead of its time, was covered by everyone from Janis Joplin to Donovan to Courtney Love. Sainte-Marie also spent five years on “Sesame Street” beginning in the mid-’70s. Every song and every era has revealed new and distinctive shades of an artist revered for her pioneering and chameleon ways. There was no mold from which Buffy Sainte-Marie emerged; she created her own, ripened from experiences in both her head and her heart. Her latest record is

an honest reflection of Sainte-Marie. The hallmarks of her catalog – the eclecticism and compassion she brings to each album, oblivious to genre boundaries and production trends – are in glorious bloom here. “To me, a good song stays relevant even though other good ones come along,” she says. “I feel like all my songs are coming from the 3-yearold I’ll always be, and the ones I keep loving are fresh to me every time I

perform them.” Often pegged as a folk singer, Sainte-Marie never fully fit in with her ’60s contemporaries. While her peers were singing the centuriesold folk ballads she may have adored, her songs sprang from her own imagination and were effortlessly unique. In truth, Sainte-Marie is like an investigative journalist who prods and provokes to tell another side of a story. Her songs have been a

considered her an “artist to be suppressed,” and Sainte-Marie all but disappeared from the U.S. music industry. Power in the Blood is a reminder that, five decades on, it is still futile to silence artists or to put Sainte-Marie in any single category. The Tidemark Theatre and Vancouver Island MusicFest present Buffy Sainte-Marie at the Tidemark Theatre on April 29. Tickets are $47 plus taxes and fees and can be purchased at the Tidemark Box Office from Thursday – Saturday between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are also available online from www. islandmusicfest.com and www.tidemarktheatre. com.

light in the dark, uncovering everything from corporate greed (“No No Keshagesh”) to violations of human rights (“My Country ’Tis of Thy People You’re Dying”) to governmental abuse (“Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”) and its companion from this latest album, (“The Uranium War”). That unwavering resilience has rippled across genres and generations, even as Sainte-Marie’s profile in the United

States diminished significantly when she was blacklisted in the ’70s. Recognizing the power

of her songwriting and activism, the Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon administrations

The world is coming to Campbell River J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The movement toward students studying abroad has become a booming business. And in Campbell River, business is good. “For more than 28 years we’ve been welcoming international students,” Lori Kubelak, coordinator of Campbell River’s International Student Program, told the School District 72 Board of Education during its regular meeting Tuesday. “But since we decided we’re going to have this program and do it right, we’ve gone from 11 students (in 2010-11) to 45 that will have passed through by the end of this year.” The International Student Program is much more than the historical student-exchange programs, like those run through Rotary International or Campbell River’s sister city exchange with Ishikari, Japan. In addition to those non-fee-paying students, the International Program draws students who not only pay tuition, but provide a local economic boost of more than $30,000 per student per year. And they also provide direct and indirect benefits to fellow students, by helping stabilize declining enrolment and boosting numbers in English language

learning programs. “We’ve come to a point in funding where we want to have full classes to make them run,” said Kubelak. “With the International Student Program we’ve got more students in the school system who want to take those classes, or maybe because of the fees we’ve got a little more flexibility.” The formal program grew out of sporadic hosting of international students going back nearly three decades. When Campbell River educators decided to formalize the program and begin marketing it to students abroad in the mid-2000s, they were set back initially by the SARS outbreak, followed by the 2008 economic recession. But since the 2010-11 school year, when those 11 students moved to Campbell River to study, the program has been on an upward trend each year. “It’s meant some changes for us in the program’s structure,” said Kubelak, a Timberline Secondary School counselor who this year became the program’s first full-time coordinator, when enrolment topped 30 students. “When we started, JoAnne Preston was the coordinator, but she was still teaching; there was no time for a full-time coordinator. We still had a part-time secretary, and our homestay

coordinator and activity coordinator were doing a little bit of work. “Those people are still there, and now they’re doing a larger volume of work.” As coordinator, Kubelak travels to international fairs where education agents seek out schools to match with students seeking educational opportunities abroad. She has to sell Campbell River’s school system as well as the lifestyle and the amenities the community

offers in comparison to some larger population centres. In response to a question from School Board Chair Susan Wilson, Kubelak noted many students seek out the big cities like, say Vancouver. And not strictly for academics. “Bigger districts can offer things like international baccalaureate programs, advanced placement courses and different things we can’t offer,” she said. “Mostly, it’s shopping we can’t

offer. We can’t compete with Robson Street.” On the other hand, as Superintendent Tom Longridge pointed out, Campbell River is the only district in the province with a working agreement with the city of Taipei, Taiwan. “The City of Taipei actually sponsors and pays the tuition of five students,” said Longridge. “We have the only model like that in B.C.” Approximately 98 per cent of the international

students live with host families in the community, who are paid $750 per month per student. “This program, from the outset, has been self-sustaining, including all the salaries associated with it,” said Longridge. “The board puts nothing into its development.” Kubelak said of the students in the program, 40 per cent are Chinese-speaking, 35 per cent come from German-speaking regions, 15 per cent

are Portugese speakers from Brazil, and 10 per cent are Spanishspeaking, from Spain and Mexico. “Personally, my goal is to have more Japanese students,” said Kubelak, noting two Japanese student are currently enrolled through the sister city program with Ishikari. “I think we should have Vietnamese students, Koreans — there’s a lot of areas we can get students from that we haven’t reached yet.”

A shared facility may be contributing to declining enrolment at North Island College’s Campbell River campus, according to the school’s president. John Bowman, president of North Island College (NIC), said a combination of factors, including demographics and the economy, have led to decreasing numbers each year since 2009 but the college not having its own space may be greatest contributing factor. “The weakness is, frankly, the college brand or presence in a shared facility has been very detrimental,” Bowman told the Strathcona Regional District Board during a presentation to the board last Wednesday. “A lot of young people from Campbell River I’ve heard from don’t view the college as the best campus for a full college life experience. “ We d o n’t o f f e r enough programs in

are living in the same house, under the same roof and everything is quite intermixed,” Bowman said. “The hallways are quite jammed with young kids, as you said Gr.9’s, and adult learners. We would like to move to a more of a duplex arrangement where the college and high school are sideby-side and there’s some potential for some cross integration but we have a clear, this is the college, this is the high school, and we know when we’re moving from one to the other. “Right now that’s not clear, so we think we can create on the site, with some significant re-configurations and additions to the existing building, a real college experience, a real college environment for adults that will be beside the high school and the high school will have access to the college,” Bowman added. “There will be some great synergy potentially but it will be clear when you’re in the college versus when you’re in the high school. “I think that will address some of the branding and campus life concerns.”

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2015 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR | 21

www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

Learn a new skill or rekindle an old passion as you see and do with world-renowned experts in design, weaving, felting, applique and knitting at Fibre Fest May 1, 2 and 3 at the Community Centre. Fans can look forward to meeting Lucy Neatby, an internationally recognized teacher, designer and writer who thrills knitters around the world with her charm, knowledge and uniquely colourful designs. Neatby is the author of three books: Cool Socks Warm Feet; Cool Knitters Finish in Style; A Little Book of Big Holes for Handknitters and the Learn with Lucy DVD series. Neatby will teach all three days and speak at the reception on Saturday evening. Her talk will be on “Seagoing Adventures in Knitting” where she will share her journeys on the East Coast and its influences on her knitting. “We are very excited to have Lucy coming all the way from Nova Scotia to share her love and expertise of all things knitting!” says recreation programmer Judy Ridgway. Teacher and designer Lynette Meek returns to Fibre Fest to teach and offer demonstrations again this year. Meek’s work is heavily influenced by colour and texture, and she sells her patterns through Ravelry, Patternfish and has also had some pub-

degree in education and a Bachelor of fine arts in textile design and fibre art. Applique artist Val Ursulak from Nanaimo will offer a class geared for beginners. “Val turns fabric into incredible art. You will think you are looking at a photo! Everyone will learn something new and exciting in her class,” Ridgway says.

Some of the other instructor’s at this year’s Fibre Fest include: Jackee Thaysen (French Braid Quilt); Jodi Richards (Needle Felting); Margaret Kelly & Gail Tellet (Fabric Dyeing); and Shelley Mackie (Viking Knitting, a unique style of jewelry making by knitting with wire). The Vancouver Island Fibre Fest-2015 runs

May 1 through 3 at the Campbell River Community Centre and is a fundraiser for the City of Campbell River Specialized Recreation programs. Admission to the event is by donation. Wear your blue jeans and support sick kids

On Thursday, April 30, thousands of people across British Columbia and the Yukon will proudly wear their favourite pair of jeans on Jeans Day in support of BC Children’s Hospital. The hospital hopes to raise more than $1 million through the sale of Jeans Day buttons for $5 and lapel pins for $20, available at Jeans Day official retailers across the province: Saveon-Foods, Overwaitea Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Cooper’s Foods, Urban Fare, Costco, Thrifty

Foods and London Drugs. “Jeans Day has a huge impact on care at BC C hi ldren’s Hospit a l because every year thousands of individuals and organizations in communities across B.C. and the Yukon decide that children matter, and that they need our help,” said Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “It really does take a team to support sick and injured children and we are grateful to everyone who joins that team with

raised this year will go to the Excellence in Child Health Fund, which supports the most urgent health care needs at BC Children’s Hospital. Visit the Jeans Day website at www.jeansday.ca for more information or to register. BC Children’s Hospital is the province’s only fullservice acute-care hospital dedicated to serving close to one million children living in B.C. and the Yukon. All children who are seriously ill or injured are referred to Children’s Hospital and

the purchase of a button or lapel pin. It’s a small gesture that makes a big difference.” Jeans Day 2015 buttons and lapel pins are available from office champions at many participating organizations. Individuals without access to a school or office champion can register at the Jeans Day website or pick up a button at an official retailer in their community. Since 1990 Jeans Day has raised more than $18 million for BC Children’s Hospital. Money

are either treated at the hospital facility in Vancouver or, with consultation from Children’s specialists, in their home community. Last year, more than 84,000 children were treated at Children’s Hospital. Funds raised by the foundation are used to support BC Children’s Hospital, its research institute and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. Although it’s been ten years without you here, you’ve always remained present. They say one person can make a difference. We say one person can impart a legacy on our world. our presence endures and is magniied in the lessons we pass on through our children. It thrives in our choices grounded in the lessons you taught and lived. It blossoms when we laugh, love and live with purpose. If we measured your life success by how many people you’ve made a difference for, it would be illuminated in the number of times they, in turn, made a difference for others. Ten years may have passed but you live with us everyday as our source of strength and inspiration.

Storm front hammers Western Canada It wasn’t quite the perfect Storm. But the Campbell River Storm junior hockey team put the perfect exclamation point on the 2014-15 season Sunday by claiming the Keystone Cup with a decisive, 6-3 victory over the North Edmonton Red Wings at Cold Lake Energy Centre in Cold Lake, AB. The Western Canadian Junior B championship is the first in the Storm’s history and the first ever by a Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team. “It’s hard to put into words,” said coach and general manager Lee Stone, who was hired before the 2013-14 season and immediately turned the Storm into a winning program. “When we came together we had this goal; it wasn’t about winning the VIJHL or provincials, it was to go all the way and win this (Keystone Cup). “We battled through some adversity in this tournament with the loss to North Edmonton during round-robin, but to get revenge in the final means a lot to these guys. They are such an exceptional group of

young men, they really, truly deserve it.” The game-winning goal was scored, fittingly, by 20-year-old captain Jordan Rauser, a defenceman who started with the program in the last of five straight losing seasons and who helped shepherd the two-year turnaround into a championship squad under Stone. “My first year with this team we had 12 wins all season. Now we’re Keystone Cup Champions, the best team in Western

It just goes to show if you work hard enough, anything is possible.” Rauser, a Campbell River native, announced last month his intention to play next season at the University of Central Oklahoma. Also fitting the makeup of the team, the six goals were scored by six different players, as the Storm relied all season not on

the scoring column as the Storm outshot North Edmonton 34-28. Dane Feeney had two assists and Tyler Welsh, Connor Logan, Ryan Grills, Michael Olson, Jordan R auser and Costain each had one. Campbell River led 1-0 after one period despite being outshot 9-8. Then, continuing a trend on display throughout the four-day Keystone Cup tourney, the Storm took command in a dominating second period. Oishi, Gavin Rauser and Jordan Rauser scored consecutive goals to make it a 4-0 game as the Storm outshot the Red Wings 15-9 in the period. Hitting the ball fat is one of the most costly shots in golf. It’s embarrassing, the ball goes almost nowhere, and sometimes it even hurts. A player can hit the ball thin and get away with it most of the time, but hitting it fat is just no fun. In order to correct your fat shots, you first have to know what KIND of fat shot you’re hitting. You can hit the ball fat from having an angle of attack (AoA) that is too steep or one that is too shallow. You can hit it fat from having too inside of a swing path or one that is too outside. Fat shots can also be caused by a release that is too early, moving your swing center too far off the ball, or even a reverse weight shift. By knowing your OWN swing habits, you can get to the correction straight on. From Steep AoA

Steep, fat shots are kind of obvious; they leave big holes in the ground. They are the most costly ones because the ground behind the ball does not give very much when you hit it. So if this mishit is your problem, you’ll need to shallow out your attack angle a bit. First check your posture. Be sure you’re giving yourself enough room

to swing your arms down through the ball. Many people who hit the turf before the ball are pleasantly surprised when they simply raise their swing center a bit at address. You may also try standing just a little bit further from the ball. Also, consider flattening your swing plane a little. An image here might be a bird diving into the water opposed to one gliding into it. Your swing action might feel more around instead of up and down. A bigger, more level shoulder turn in the backswing with the arms swinging more across the chest can help you shallow out your attack angle.

Shallow fat shots are a little more difficult to detect, but they are fat shots nonetheless. I think of these as “drop kicks,” which happen when the sole of the club just “scuffs” the ground behind the golf ball. There are no deep divots here, just less than solid contact from brushing the grass first. In this case, you’ll need a steeper attack angle. There are a few ways to accomplish this. Again, check your posture. Be sure you have sufficient hip bend at address with your arms hanging naturally under your shoulders and your rear end extended. You may also consider moving

From Casting Finally, there is “casting,” or too early of a release that can cause fat shots. When the lead arm and club get extended too soon (from the inside) you’ll crash. This one is almost always associated with an inside-out path and insufficient pelvic rotation into impact. If you are an early release of the club, you need to be aware of getting off your back foot early in the downswing. The reason this is an inside-out related swing issue is because if you come over the top with an early release, you usually do not crash.

Reach for the sky in the backswing; get your arms and club to swing more upright. Your shoulders should feel a steeper turn and your pivot should stay fairly centered. In this swing your lead arm can come off the chest a little and swing up, less around than when trying to shallow out your angle. And be sure to feel a more aggressive turn through the ball as you swing. You must get to your left side into impact; hanging back on the right side is a common cause of a shallow attack angle.

Fishing Corner Already in the month of April there has been good fishing action off the Discovery Pier. The main anglers are from Campbell River and they spend countless hours on the Pier socializing with friends and fishing, in hopes of catching the big one. Discovery pier has a fishing culture that is made up of locals, tourists and hard-core fishermen who cast out lures and large fish can be caught. Many fish caught include pinks in the summer and bottom fish year around. The main catch scoreboard will not be on display to the public until May 1st. A 26 pound spring salmon was caught by Al Smoikins on April 16th. I met up with Rosa Turko from Campbell River who has been fishing the pier for 3 weeks now and

email:

that day she hooked a small flounder. Rosa was using a single hook with a worm and casting it out using a 2-ounce weight. Last year on the Pier, 3 nice size salmon were caught at the end of April. The real fun will start in summer with the pink run where lots of fish are caught each year. After May 1st fishing rods can be rented on the Pier for the day and all anglers

Your Adventure Awaits! with

must have a licence which can also be obtained at the Pier. The best time to see anglers fishing from the Pier is on a high tide during the summer months. Drift fishing started in the early 70’s when Rex Field invented the Buzz Bomb lure. Today there are countless numbers of salmon lures being made and with the right conditions they all catch fish. A number of people who don’t fish say that they would start to fish if someone would show then the basics. The first step is stop into a local tackle shop and work with your budget to get started. If you can hold a rod learn how to cast and have fun. On Discovery pier there are a number of anglers who help out new comers to the recreational sport of drift fishing from the pier.

Don Daniels

Campbell River Guide Association has been working on a project to raise and release small Chinook salmon. 225,000 fry are being held at Discovery Harbour Marina and will be released in a few weeks. Volunteers come out daily to throw out fish pellets in the holding pen. The trout action in the local lakes will be very good in coming weeks as we have seen some warmer weather in the Campbell River area. Echo has been fishing well in recent weeks and it will only get better. Fry Lake can be very good if you can get out to the alley area and some 2-pound plus trout can be caught. If it rains, try the early morning hours or late evening. The ant hatch is yet to happen.

Bantam Ravens rally to win

Carson Foy picked the pocket of a Juan de Fuca defender and turned it into a breakaway game-winner with 1:19 remaining as the Campbell River Ravens bantams notched a 10-8 win over the Whalers in Vancouver Island Minor Lacrosse play at Rod Brind’Amour Arena Sunday. The win capped a sweep of the team’s home-opening weekend, following a 17-3 romp over Cowichan Valley Saturday. Overall, Campbell River’s first weekend of home games provided mixed results, including one-goal games by each of the Ravens’ three midget teams. The Midget A Ravens led Saanich late in the third period before suffering a 6-5 loss to the Tigers Sunday after falling 7-3 to Cowichan Valley Saturday. The Midget B Ravens topped Saanich 4-3 to improve to 1-1 on the season, but the Midget C Ravens suffered a 7-6 loss to Cowichan. The Peewee B Ravens
