Geoff Yule a distinguished alumni
Champion of youth receives distinguished alumni from Selkirk College Submitted to the West Kootenay Advertiser Geoff Yule believes the future is secure as long as there’s ample opportunity for young people to succeed. A Selkirk College alumnus, the Castlegar resident’s work in the community over the last 20 years is a testament to how he feels life in the West Kootenay is enhanced when youth are given the tools to make a contribution at work and play. A partner in Yule Anderson Chartered Professional Accountants and volunteer for a variety of different organizations, Yule’s contributions will be recognized at the Selkirk College Graduation 2015 Ceremony this Friday with the honour of Distinguished Alumni. “There is nothing more rewarding than providing a young person the opportunity to show their potential and then watching them succeed,” says Yule. “We undersell how much young people can do, they get a lot of bad press. If you take most youth and challenge them to do better, they are up for that challenge and will do well.” At the core of Yule’s philosophy is education and Selkirk College plays an important role in helping create the proper balance in the community. “If you give people an opportunity to get an education, then they will be able to take care of themselves and you will have a better society as a whole,” he says. “Selkirk College allows many individuals that wouldn’t be able to move to Vancouver or Kelowna to get an education, to actually get that education right at home.” Selkirk acts as springboard to successful career
A graduate of Castlegar’s Stanley Humphries Secondary and standout hockey player, after high school Yule enrolled in the Selkirk College Liberal Arts & Sciences Program in 1977 and played for the Saints hockey team. “In my case I felt Selkirk College, as it is now, was a good bridge between high school and university for those who are not exactly sure what they want to do,” says Yule. During his two semesters at Selkirk College, Yule was able to explore different options and put more thought into his future. He moved onto the University of British Columbia where he studied bio chemistry and pharmacy before switching gears and attending Simon Fraser University where he finished his post-secondary education with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Yule articled for three years with the chartered accounting firm of Price Waterhouse (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) in Vancouver. He then transferred to Geneva, Switzerland and spent three years working there before returning and spending another four years with the firm in Vancouver. By 1993, Yule and his wife Katrina were looking for a smaller community to raise their three young girls. They discovered an opportunity in his old hometown and bought into the firm now known as Yule Anderson Chartered Professional Accountants. Keeping Up the Selkirk College Connection A n important as-
pect of the Selkirk College Business Administration Program is the opportunities students are afforded through the college’s Co-Op Education & Employment Services (CEES) which partners with local businesses and organizations to place students in crucial work placements. Over the past two decades, Yule Anderson Chartered Professional Accountants has taken on 27 students from Selkirk College for 16-month work placements. “Geoff has a genuine enthusiasm and wonderful coaching approach to the myriad of Selkirk College co-op education students who continue to participate in work terms at Yule Anderson,” says Brenda Smith, manager of the Selkirk College’s CEES. Yule’s passion for community and equipping young people with the proper foundation stretches well beyond his professional life. Over the last 20 years he has been involved in the Castlegar Rotary Interact Club, a dedicated y o u t h soccer coach, a

key member of the Castlegar Aquanauts Swim Club and the Kootenay Region of BC Summer Swimming Association. Yule’s contribution to the Selkirk College and the community are considerable, but he says being presented with the honour of Distinguished Alumni at this year’s graduation ceremony was not something he expected. “It was a huge surprise because there are so many people who do great things for the college, but being such a believer in Selkirk College I’m very honoured that somebody actually thought of me,” he says. “To be linked l i k e that is
fabulous, I’m thrilled to be part of something that is so important to the entire West Kootenay-Boundary.” The Selkirk College Graduation 2015 Ceremony will take place at the Castlegar Campus on Friday, April 24. Yule will be joined on stage by fellow 2015 special award recip-
ients John Armstrong (Distinguished Educator), Margaret Scaia (Distinguished Alumni) and Alex Atamanenko (Honourary Diploma in Peace Studies). Learn more about the Selkirk College Business Administration Program and join us on Facebook.

The Junior Dragon’s Den is looking at adding more original business ideas to throw at the dragons next year. After two years of entries from the West Kootenay region, Community Futures of Greater Trail (CFGT) will be inviting youth from Cranbrook and Revelstoke to join the list of competitors. The competition provides students with the chance to showcase their entrepreneurial ideas and innovations, and Youth Initiative Coordinator with the CFGT office, John Reed, can’t wait to extend the opportunity even further. “It is great to give students in other communities the opportunity to profile their existing business, or create, pitch and launch a new business concept,” he said. “The competition is super fun, very creative and a great challenge and tends to attract bright, creative and energetic young minds from any community.” Representatives from both the Cranbrook and Revelstoke Community Futures offices will be in the audience at the Junior Dragon’s Den final on May 1, just to check out the Motorcraft®

competition and the benefit it could bring to their communities. The General Manager at Community Futures Revelstoke, Kevin Dorrius, says he is looking forward to what expanding the West Kootenay competition would offer the future business people of Revelstoke. “I think the basic thing is that anytime you can expose youth to entrepreneurialism and promote it, then we are doing them a tremendous favour,” he said, adding that the competition is just the beginning of educating youth on business practices. “Not just in terms of entrepreneurialism, but in financial literacy and so forth. One of the big issues we face in Canada is the continuing mountain of consumer debt and the more we can learn about business, the better we are going to have our kids prepared to go into the world..” Sean Campbell, general manager of Community Futures East Kootenay, believes the competition will provide young people of the Cranbrook area a chance to expand on their skills. “It will be exciting to witness our own ambitious young entrepreneurs as they develop new skills and knowledge with

Reed says the expansion of the competition will also add to the prize pot and networking opportunities, giving entrants that extra boost they need to come out on top. “There are significant cash prizes to be realized,” he said. “As the competition grows throughout the Columbia

Dylan Peil, Nicholas Paun and Ivie Lock-Luttmer received numerous awards at the fair and will travel to Fredricton, NB for the Canada-wide Science Fair from May 14-16. Photos by Erin Handy Submitted to the West Kootenay Advertiser In just two years, Nicholas Paun and Dylan Peil have racked up numerous awards for their innovations in science and have twice qualified to represent the West Kootenay & Boundary at the Canadawide science Fair. Ivie Lock‐Luttmer, a 2015 grand prize regional fair winner, is closing that gap, having won three individual awards as well as qualifying to travel to the national fair this year. The 2015 regional student science fair sponsored by KAST on April 11at LV Rogers Secondary School, featured 86 projects from almost 100 participants from across the Kootenay Boundary region and included students from the Kootenay Lake (#8) and Kootenay‐Columbia (#20) School Districts. Paun, in grade 11 at Mt. Sentinel School, entered his 2nd edition Chemlogic: A Logic Programming Chemistry System and won the BCIC Young Innovator Scholarship ($2,000), a Selkirk College Scholarship ($500), and Gold in the Senior Innovation Division. He will travel to Fredricton, NB for the Canada‐wide Science Fair from May 14‐16. Peil, in grade 8 at Trafalgar Middle School, designed and prototyped a Solar Concentrator using a satellite dish covered with mirrors. His efforts netted him the Nelson Hydro Award ($100), Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of BC Award ($100), a Selkirk College Scholarship ($200) and Gold in the Junior Innovation Division. He too will be traveling to Fredricton in May. Lock‐Luttmer, in grade 7 at Trafalgar, won Gold in the Junior Research Division for her research on Dead Zones. She also won the BC Nature Award ($100), the WE Coates Award ($200) and will be joining Paun and Peil for the Canada‐ wide fair.

Photos by Erin Handy This year’s regional science fair was a success for many others as well, with eight other students winning individual awards and 63 students winning gold, silver or bronze in the research, experiment or innovation categories. Of special note, Katie Clarke, in grade 2 at Webster Elementary, spoke to judges via phone from the hospital after she experienced temporary paralysis due to a tick bite. Clarke’s project, The Magic Eye, and her knowledge of the subject matter won her the gold medal in the Grade 2 research division despite the setback. Clarke’s siblings also entered the fair, with Charles winning a silver medal in the Kindergarten/Grade 1 Experiment Division, and James and Madeline winning Silver in the Grade 6 Innovation Division with Can Lego Be Sorted? Other sibling winners included Nadine and Hayden Persad; Ify, Chinedu and Chinemelum okonkwo; Felix and Oscar Willems; Sophie and Georgia Byrne;

The fate of the Trail BCSPCA facility rests in the hands of the regional district. The BC SPCA sent notice to Grace McGregor, board chair for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), in late March, confirming the Trail branch will be closed by the end of June 2016, citing the facility’s conditions are detrimental to the health and welfare of people and animals. In the March 17 correspondence, Craig Daniell, the organization’s chief executive director, says the BC SPCA’s 2013 facilities development and service plan accorded priority to replacement of the Trail shelter, and requested matching capital funding from the RDKB in support of the project. The proposal was rejected, writes Daniell, leaving no alternative but to cease operations and consider other service models to fulfill the animal welfare mandate in the region. “I brought this letter to the

board because at the end of the day, if the SPCA is not in our area, it will affect what happens to the mistreated animals,” said McGregor, told the Trail Times on Tuesday. The organization responded to McGregor’s request to appear before the entire RDKB board during the April 30 meeting in Grand Forks. The meeting is open and the community is invited to attend. Daniell wrote the current building at 7700 Highway 3B is 32-years old, in extremely poor condition, and required urgent replacement. He said the organization demonstrated its desire to remain in the Trail area by purchasing the one-acre parcel of land to serve as the future home for the BC SPCA’s West Kootenay/Boundary Community Animal Centre. The property was purchased for $314,000 with preliminary indications being a 3,000-square foot shelter was required to replace the Trail facility, which Danielle estimated to cost $1.6 million.

Inonoaklin versus Fire Valley Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Ninety-third in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The Inonoaklin or Fire Valley, on the west side of Lower Arrow Lake, above Edgewood, has a complicated naming history. Inonoaklin is also the name of a creek, mountain, and park. The creek first shows up on J.W. Trutch’s 1871 map of BC as “Inonoaklin R.” (Supposedly explorer Alexander Caulfield Anderson mentioned it on his 1867 map as well.) The Geographic Board of Canada officially adopted the name Inonoaklin Creek in 1904, choosing it over the alternative Sanderson Creek, and at the same time endorsed Fire Valley. The Nelson Daily News of Oct. 21, 1952 claimed “Inonoaklin means ‘wandering’ and describes the river of that name which empties into the Arrow Lakes here.” In the second edition of her Pioneer Days of Nakusp and Arrow Lakes (1964), Kate Johnson stated that Inonoaklin means “winding waters.” However, Randy Bouchard
and Dorothy Kennedy wrote in Lakes Indian Ethnography and History (1985), “Presumably Inonoaklin is the anglicization of an Indian term, but we do not recognize it.” The stream was labelled Fire Valley Creek on an 1890 survey plan. The earliest known newspaper mention of that name is in the Vancouver Daily World of April 14, 1890: “Mr. Coryell, C.E., is surveying in the neighborhood of Fire Valley with the object of getting an easy pass over the divide for the line of the Kootenay and Okanagan Railway …” As to the origin of Fire Valley, the BC Minister of Mines report for 1901 said it was “so called from the fact that a fire swept up the valley and killed all the trees on both hillsides,” but didn’t give the date of the fire. Rose Wright elaborated in the Arrow Lakes News of June 19, 1958: “[L]egend has it was so named by the Indians who, from down the Columbia, made fishing and hunting trips up the river and lake each year. On one particular trip they found the whole valley on fire. A gigantic forest fire stretched from Killarney in a crescent shape, ending at Needles.”
Another theory suggests red granite surrounding the valley might have been the name’s origin. An application for the Fire Valley post office was filed in 1893, but it didn’t open until almost a year later. In 1906, the post office was renamed Needles, although it’s unclear whether it actually moved. The name reverted to Fire Valley in 1908 when a new Needles post office was established. The Fire Valley post office closed in 1930. According to the book Just Where is Edgewood, “In 1926 the valley name was changed from Fire Valley to Inonoaklin Valley … Some farmers felt the name Fire Valley was a deterrent to getting new settlers. They were instrumental in having that name changed.” L.J. Edwards of Nakusp criticized the move in the Slocan Enterprise of May 21, 1930: “Would it not have been much more appropriate and certainly more euphonious and most certainly easier spelling than the atrocious name applied to Fire Valley, with its pioneering history, in recent years by newcomers who had no hand in that history?” His letter brought an anonymous rebuttal the following
keeping insurance simple
week: “The change of name was only made after long discussion at the local Women’s and Farmer’s Institutes, and I only heard one old timer object to it and I might remind Mr. Edwards that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, as I fail to see where Nakusp sounds nearly as euphonious as Inonoaklin.” The same correspondent added in the Arrow Lakes News on June 1: “[W]e are a little bit sensitive at anyone poking fun at such a pretty name as Inonoaklin which name is derived from the Indian meaning ‘winding river.’ Mr. Edwards asks what harm can a name like Fire Valley do? Well the gentleman who first suggested changing the name was Mr. J.B. Munro, the present deputy minister of agriculture who at a largely attended meeting of the inhabitants of Fire Valley, told them that the only thing wrong with the valley was the name, which gave everybody acquainted with the place the impression that it was devastated by fire and no good for anything and that was the prevailing idea at Victoria and other places …” Today you’ll still hear both names, but Inonaoklin is much more common.

The Beardude Story, with a bizarre cast including an oddball hippy, a pot-bellied pig, an overfriendly raccoon, 24 black bears and a thousand pot plants, (apparently guarded by the bears) is to be released next week. Neither enforcers nor media attending an August 2010 drug bust at the home of one Allen Piche at a rural location near Christina Lake, B.C. could have expected to see their activities “gone viral” on “legs” worldwide. Some assumed the bears (black) were there to guard the pot. “I wish,” Piche said. “If they were dangerous, I wouldn’t be here to tell this story.” Beardude describes his evolution to bear feeder

as a product of experiences from childhood, to education and work that led to his belief: “That we had better decide for ourselves what was right and wrong.” Beardude also contains Piche’s deep appreciation for bears as a species, and his observations on inter-species’ relations in a brief survey on black bear habits, habitat and behaviour leading to rebuttal by the province’s ministry of environment. Were the bears really taught to guard a crop? A smile creeps in as Piche explains, “I couldn’t even convince Stick Boy to stay off my car. And as for the squad car, well, those bears don’t understand the concept of official property either.” Watch for The Beardude Story — it will be available at a variety of local retail locations to be announced soon.

Barry Nelson, Nelson’s 2014 Citizen of the Year, enjoys a laugh during the recent banquet in his honour at St. Joseph’s school. The Knights of Columbus recognized Nelson for his social justice work and transportation advocacy, among other things. For years he was the driving force behind the Kootenay Carshare Co-op. “It’s truly an honour,” he said. “People ask me ‘How do you get involved in all these things’ I was asked. Virtually none of [these projects] were initiated by me. Without collaboration, the success would be limited.” After 50 years, the annual event that pays tribute to the area’s outstanding volunteers was on the verge of being cancelled, but it’s been revived thanks to a new partnership with the Nelson Star. 25th annual photo show continued from page B1
This requires participating members to submit 10 photos from
pre-selected categories and is both challenging and fun for all. Members have one year to take these photos. Wray continued, “One of the favourite
activities of the club is taking field trips to various parts of the Kootenays.” As well, the club has a travelling exhibition, which exhibits mem-
bers’ photos at venues in Castlegar, Trail, Rossland, and Nelson. Members are free to participate in one or more activities as they choose. Photographer and WKCC member, Jim Lawrence took this photo at Meadow Creek B.C. He calls it “Swans on Black”.

Arts
Children show their art at Oxygen Art Centre Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present the work of Grade 3 and 4 elementary students working through the Artist In the Classroom program. Students from two local elementary schools have been working with local artist, Jennifer McAuley to create a series of one of a kind, handmade, Art Cards to trade, exhibit and collect. Each week for the last few months the students have taken part in a workshop session series that introduces young artists to unique forms of visual expression. Each student has created a series of art cards that they can keep or trade. “By creating a collection of art work,” says McAuley. “Students learn the value of one-of-a-kind art, as opposed to mass produced, impersonal images and art making.” Now the students involved have a chance to share their creations with the larger community and the opportunity to experience being part of an Art Opening and Exhibition at Oxygen Art Centre. Their work will be on exhibit from May 1-3, and the public are invited, not only view the art, but to come and create and trade their own art cards! The show opens on Friday May 1 from 5-7 p.m. and gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oxygen Art Centre is located at 320 Vernon St. (back alley entrance) in Nelson. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The art making sessions were tailored to work with the students current curriculum: Mr. Wheeler’s Grades 3-4 class at Blewett elementary used their studies of the properties of light and sound as a jumping off point, while Ms. Sabourin’s Grade 3 class at Rosemont Elementary focused on buildings and cities as a source of inspiration. The Artist In the Classroom ArtStarts program is a grant program for principals, teachers and Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) groups to bring professional artists into the classroom to collaborate on creative ways to explore curricula. More info can be found at www.artstarts.com.
