the 250 members of the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary have donated $3 million to the Cranbrook Regional Hospital. The CHCA Volunteers provide such hospital services as greeting and guiding

out-patients to their appointments in Diagnostic Imaging, Ambulatory Care, Oncology, etc. In addition they supervise youth volunteers in both the hospital and Joseph Creek Village. Revenues accrue from the Hospital Gift Shop

and the Cranbook Auxiliary Thrift Store. It is a matter of great pride among the CHCA Volunteers that they operate their businesses and services entirely without any paid staff.

Take some time to remember those who have died on the job

National Day of Mourning April 28, 2015

The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress. The Day of Mourning has since spread to about 80 countries around the world and has been adopted by the AFL-CIO and the International Confederation of Free Trade. The numbers tell the story. In 2013, 902 workplace deaths were recorded in Canada. While it’s the lowest total since 2000 when

882 fatalities were recorded, this number still represents 2.47 deaths every single day. In the 21 year period from 1993 to 2013, 18,941 people lost their lives due to workrelated causes (an average of 902 deaths per year). The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress. The Day of Mourning has since spread to about 80 countries around the world and has been adopted by the

AFL-CIO and the International Confederation of Free Trade. The Canadian flag on Parliament Hill will fly at halfmast. Workers will light can-

dles, don ribbons and black armbands and observe moments of silence. Businesses are asked to participate by declaring April 28 a Day of Mourning and to strive to

prevent workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries. CCOHS hopes that the annual observance of this day will strengthen the resolve to establish safe conditions

B.C. Views: Land sales leave lingering odour

by Tom Fletcher The B.C. Liberal government’s sale of Crown properties to help balance its election budget was the dominant story in the legislature last week, as the NDP revealed evidence of a “fire sale” that may have left millions on the table. They started with Burke Mountain, the biggest single deal involving 14 view properties in Coquitlam. The buyer was a prominent developer whose array of companies happened to donate nearly $1 million to the B.C. Liberal Party since 2000. The $85 million price tag was similar to the B.C. Assessment Authority value on these forested properties, but an outside appraisal concluded they could have fetched an additional $43 million if they had spent more time on the hot Lower Mainland real estate market. (This sale made headlines last fall for the province’s $8 million buyout of the local First Nation’s undefined territorial claim, when it was revealed the chief of the tiny Kwikwitlem First Nation pocketed an $800,000 commission.) The government’s defence of the sale went

from wobbly to weak. Citizens’ Services Minister Amrik Virk was caught flat-footed and tried to get by on platitudes rather than retreat and find some answers. Premier Christy Clark weighed in, arguing that the budget would have balanced without the property sale, and that some sales closed too late to help the electionyear budget. Finance Minister Mike de Jong stressed that all these asset sales were detailed in three successive budgets. They downplayed the notion of land sales being rushed. Then the NDP produced a string of emails sent between senior officials responsible for selling two big properties across the street from the legislature. “To be part of the sale and development of over eight acres of Victoria’s beautiful inner harbour area is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. An opportunity that normally would warrant years of planning and preparation,” wrote one citizens’ services bureaucrat. “Unfortunately we don’t have unlimited time – our goal is to have For Sale signs up by Oct. 31 with sales proceeds in the bank by March 31, 2013.” Then came a disclosure about a property in Surrey that had been bought as a potential hospital site. Once the existing hospital was expanded, that property was declared surplus. Indeed, de Jong featured this property to promote the government’s plan to stimulate local economies with

private sector investment on unused land. The Surrey deal closed for $20.5 million on March 21, 2014, just days before the end of the fiscal year. NDP leader John Horgan pointed to an outside appraisal of $23.5 million, and an assessment for tax purposes of $27.2 million. The appraiser also recommended that the “highest and best use” for the Surrey land was to hold it until had been rezoned for commercial, retail or office development. De Jong cited another big health property in Vancouver that sold for more than its appraised and assessed value. It’s only the actual market that determines worth, he insisted. But it’s now clear that these and perhaps other sales were done with arbitrary deadlines that had everything to do with the B.C. Liberals’ need to balance the books. When elections are a battle of sound bites, perception matters more than reality. It’s also worth recalling that the budget deficits prior to the 2013 election were largely a result of the B.C. government’s costly undoing of the harmonized sales tax, rather than the harsh forces of international finance. Surplus asset sales have a long tradition in B.C., where the government owns more than 90 per cent of all land. But after this round, full disclosure will be demanded. MS Walk dedicated to a local hero and friend This year’s 2015 Scotia Bank MS Walk is dedicated to Karen McGregor and all of the people everywhere whose lives have been affected by Multiple Sclerosis. The following is a brief article written by a dear friend of Karen’s. “Karen Mc Gregor was born, raised and lived her life in Cranbrook, B.C. She was the oldest of 3 children in a long time resident family, in a home filled with much love. She was an incredible wife and soul mate to Ron and an excellent, caring and loving mother to their three sons. Karen was truly a caring and giving person. Every task she took on she gave 110%, was very organized and dedicated. After she was diagnosed with MS she became the East

Kootenay MS Self-help group’s best and most effective fund raiser. In her years working on group events, she had an outstanding positive and upbeat attitude, which affected everyone involved. Karen along with her dedicated family and loyal friends raised funds for the MS Society and the East Kootenay MS Self-help Group. She did this to support the group’s goal,” to make people living with MS in our area have a better quality of life.” Karen was the Walk Co-ordinator for two years and in many of the other walks held in Cranbrook, she was behind the scenes spending endless hours to assist the Walk Coordinator for that year’s event, to make each one as successful as possible. Through her ef-

forts she not only raised many thousands for our group but also directly for the M S Society, mainly through the MS Walks. Also, Karen was very involved in the local Paraplegic Group, in helping to make Cranbrook more wheel chair accessible. She was a strong advocate for persons living in wheel chairs. Karen was always looking for more ways to give back to her community and help others. Even though she herself was in a wheel chair she loved to hold the door open for anyone with a disability or a senior. When Karen was told she had leukemia it was already very advanced and she was rushed to Vancouver only to find that it was a rare and aggressive type and she had a limited time. But Karen was able to have several months at home before she passed in September of 2014. She had a remarkable

attitude and even on a bad day the worst she was ever heard to say was “Today isn’t a good day” and left it at that. Whenever asked how she was doing she would respond, “I’m OK!” in a very upbeat voice. Then she would say “More importantly how are you?” But that was Karen only being Karen. Karen was such a strong, together, giving, loving, positive, cheerful person. Karen’s fight with MS and leukemia is over, she fought both gallantly with grace and dignity and during all this time she put others before her own problems and limitations.” Please join us in carrying on Karen’s legacy by signing up to walk on May 3rd or by donating to help us end Multiple Sclerosis. For further information, please visit Mswalks.ca or by phoning Cyndie, the Walk Coordinator at 250-4260020.

The gas tank in a Fit is positioned further forward to allow a low, flat cargo floor in the rear and its seating can contort to a multitude of setups, to accommodate all kinds of cargo. Its rear side doors also open extra wide, making it easier to get that stuff in or out. There’s ample headroom for tall occupants and Fit’s cabin feels more spacious than most in this class. The second-generation ’09 redesign gave Fit a more rigid and slightly longer body with even more passenger cabin space; an increase in engine power and this Fit is (marginally) more fuel-efficient. The extra inner space was achieved by positioning the front pillars further forward. Rear passengers benefited most with increased leg and headroom. Fit comes in three trim levels; DX, LX and a top-line Sport edition. All trims are powered by the same 117-horsepower 1.5-litre engine and come standard with six airbags and anti-lock (ABS) brakes. The top-line Fit Sport adds a 160watt premium audio system, keyless entry, fog lights, a rear roofline spoiler, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 15-inch alloy wheels and an aero under-body kit,. Interestingly, the auto transmission versions come with a tire inflation kit instead of a spare wheel. It was a weightreduction measure that also adds some extra storage space. A proper (conventional) spare wheel was offered as an option for the original owner. Although it’s certainly not limited to being an urban runabout as Fit is surprisingly stable on the highway, considering its short wheelbase and trim, tall-ish body. Yet, some will probably find the highspeed cabin noise level and Fit’s taut ride a little tiresome on a long road trip. Mechanical reliability is excellent and city/highway fuel economy is roughly the same with the base five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Using the new five-cycle rating method, an ’09 Fit with an automatic should consume 8.3 litres every 100 km when driven in the city and 6.6 litres every 100 km on the highway. The only significant production change to the second generation Fit came for the 2011 model year when an electronic stability control system was included as a standard feature on the Sport edition. It was optional on other editions and it’s definitely a very good handling enhancing see Fit page 9

The Guide Dog and Service Dog Act - Bill 17 1.

Guide and service dogs provide a true lifeline for many British Columbians. The proposed changes to the act will ensure the people who use guide or service dogs to perform critical daily tasks or services, have improved access to restaurants, transit vehicles and any place to which the public is invited.

2.

New, high training standards for guide and service dogs will be put into place to strengthen public safety. There will be new requirements around visible identification to make it clear to business owners, landlords and transit staff that a dog accompanying someone is fully certified.

3.

The changes will clarify tenancy rights to ensure individuals with guide and service dogs – including retired dogs – are not being prevented from keeping them in their residence. This proposed legislation delivers on a commitment made in Accessibility 2024.

Future specs By Keith Morgan

MINI is bringing a completely new meaning to driving glasses. At the Shanghai Auto show, the BMW sub-brand has offered first sight of its revolutionary eyewear. “MINI Augmented Vision gives an insight into how intelligent connectivity between a MINI car and eyewear into which relevant content is projected might work in the future,” explained Dr. Jörg Preißinger, project-manager MINI Augmented Vision, BMW Group research and technology. “Working with several Qualcomm companies, we have created an interlinked system and augmented reality eyewear with a characteristic MINI design that revolutionise the experience both in and outside the vehicle. This prototype with its customised, interactive functions succeeds in fusing augmented reality with the brand’s trademark sense of lifestyle.” Using see-through technology, the eyewear projects information in the driver’s direct field of view without concealing other traffic. “We are proud to have helped develop a breakthrough augmented reality interface between eyewear and the automobile,” said Jay Wright, Vice President, Qualcomm Connected Experiences, Inc. “MINI Augmented Vision offers a compelling example of what’s possible today, and what we can expect in the future.” The technology will enable drivers to enter destination details outside of the car then transfer the information to the onboard navigation. The navigation will then display from the current location to the vehicle or from the vehicle to the final destination. Direction instructions in the shape of coloured arrows will appear projected on the road ahead at the turns. Current speed and posted speed limits will be projected into the driver’s field of view above the steering wheel, without obscuring the road ahead. A small icon shows in the eyewear when a message is received and the SMS/message can then be read out by the “car”.

Your home is one of the biggest assets you’ll own.

Bull River Shooters early season results by Bradley Woods Our first two matches of the season are already in the books and they were both great successes. March 21 saw 23 shooters and our April shoot saw 25 shooters testing their skills. We had a great mix of men, women, juniors and all abilities. Results are as follows: March 21 Small Bore Standard Rifle: Match Winner - Kalvin Marsh (Jr shooter) AAA - Jeramey Marsh AA – Jordan Marsh A – Emmeline Aune (Jr Shooter) Small Bore Hunter Rifle: Match Winner - Kalvin Marsh (Jr) AAA –Jeramey Marsh AA – Jordan Marsh A - Clayton Williams On Sunday, shooters gathered for a High Power match and it took a shoot-out to determine the top 3 rankings: 1st Bill Johnson 2nd Richard Carrere 3rd Rick Fraser April 11 Small Bore Standard Rifle: Match Winner Jeramey Marsh AAA - Kalvin Marsh (Jr shooter) AA – Ryan Mate A – Justin Marsh (Jr Shooter) Small Bore Hunter Rifle: Match Winner – Jeramey Marsh AAA – 1st Kalvin Marsh (Jr shooter) AA – Brad Woods A - Justin Marsh (Jr Shooter) Sunday saw another High Power Match: 1st Jeramey Marsh 2nd Richard Carrere 3rd Rick Fraser Congratulations to Jeramey Marsh for his clean sweep this weekend, the result of a great deal of practise and focus. You’re probably wondering about all those Marshes on the results lists! This great family has been a great part of the success of the Bull River Shooters. When I was doing a little historical research for this article I was delighted to see pictures going back to the early days of the club featuring Marshes. Brothers Randy and Rocky (and I think I saw a picture of

their dad shooting also) were keen shooters and they had their sons and daughters involved early. And now they are helping their grandchildren get into the sport. Our club is right in there with them… we know getting our spouses, children and friends involved helps our sport grow and be healthy. My own son shot his first 5 in a row and scored his first “A” class score this weekend. I couldn’t be prouder. The Bull River Shooters Association (BRSA) was formed in February 1987 by a group of local shooting enthusiasts who had been introduced to the sport of Metallic Silhouette Shooting. Our sport is to rifle hunting as Trap and Skeet are to bird hunting! We shoot standing, holding the gun unsupported and attempt to knock down steel targets in the shape of animals. The sport evolved from Mexico and is great practice for hunting but is enjoyed by many who never plan to hunt. Club “Historian” Dave Sherret was there in the beginning and filled me in on the past! What's new for veggies 2015 - Part 2

This last week we discussed the benefits of growing your own and buying locally and how all of the new varieties are making it easier and easier to do so, whether you have a yard or an apartment. We talked about new and healthier cauliflower and some "eggciting" new eggplants, ideal for containers. This week we are going to talk new squash varieties that we are growing this year. Don't worry we still have all of the regular varieties but these new ones sound pretty cool. 1. Squash "Butternut Honeynut" Single serving mini butternut squash! How cool is that! Dark, tan skin and great sweet flavour. Simply cut in half and bake! Squash are 4-5 inches. Love lots of sun, so plant them in a hot spot. These are a late harvest variety. 2. Squash "Balmoral" This is the perfect squash for a small garden. This is a hybrid variety of patty pan summer squash. It is very tasty and the plants set fruit along the stem like brussel sprouts. It is a creamy white scalloped squash you harvest when they are 3-4 inches in diameter. Use when young like a zucchini and slightly larger fruit can be stuffed and baked. Great for pots and containers or small spaces. Exotic type blooms, make great plants even on patios. 3. Squash "Brice; This is a Nurseryland exclusive, that we are very excited about. Pronounced "Bree-See" this is a round squash and very similar to the heirloom variety "Ronde de Nice". Grey in colour, it can be stuffed like peppers. It also boasts attractive foliage. Ready to harvest in 45 days which is ideal in case we get a short summer. Very resistant to any mildews that can often plague squash. 4. Squash "Golden Egg;" This squash has supposedly won awards for taste. Known for succulent flavour and texture this spherical zucchini measures 5 " across . It boasts delicious creamy flesh with hints of chartreuse. High yielding with an eight week harvest time. 5. Pumpkin "Autumn Gold" One of the best looking pumpkins you can grow. 7-10 pound fruit turn golden early and then mature to a rich orange colour. These have smooth skin and a very uniform colour. Great size for cooking and even better yet, for kids to carve! For best growing results a minimum of 6 hours of hot sunlight a day is ideal. Another helpful tip is they prefer ground watering as opposed to overhead watering. If you must water overhead as many of us do in a garden, try to do it early in the day,so they go into nighttime with dry foliage. Once squash get growing they do require a fair amount of water. And if you are growing them in a pot, give them some good fertilizer...they are big "eaters too. Real McCoy Organic Granular Fertilizer would work great! Till Next week happy gardening. Watch for next week, we will be talking new tomatoes!!

OBITUARY Pearson Howard Bruce (Jawf) Feb 28, 1960 – Apr 16, 2015 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bruce after a 14 month battle with ALS on April 16th, At the Kimberley Special Care Home (The Pines). Jawf was the comic of the family, always having a joke or a story to tell that had his friends and family in stitches. Family gatherings were the greatest when Jawf and Loni were together, as Loni’s wit and quick remarks were a match for Jawf’s. Jawf was always accepting of people for who they were, never making judgement, because of this he made many friends throughout BC & Alberta with his career in the oil fields, and if anyone needed a helping hand, he was always the first in line. Bruce is survived by his parents, Howie and Sheila Pearson, his three sisters, Terry Harrison (Michael), Sandra Zaplitny (Terry), Christie Caccavo (Enzo) and his two brothers, Keith & Scott. Nephews Dana Harrison (Krista), Julian Harrison (Robyn), Brett Robertson, Dakota Hoffman and Nieces Loni Robertson ( Mario), Carlie Pearson as well as his Great Nephews and Nieces Gavin, Maksym, Grace and Penelope, and a very special friend Velma Moulton, who was always able to bring a smile to his face, no matter how he was feeling. “Let your Spirit fly free and May you soar with the Eagles.” There will be no service by request, instead a gathering of remembrance will be held Sunday, May 17th 2015 at his sister’s home, 201 7th St South, Cranbrook from 1-5 pm. Please join the family and share some memories and stories. (Jawf loved a party). In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: ASL Society, 13351 Commerce Pkwy, Richmond BC V6V 3A4 Or The Kimberley Special Care Home, 386 2nd Ave Kimberley V1A 2Z8

OBITUARY Murray Bruce (Barney) Dearden Sept. 12, 1923-April 17, 2015 Barney, a brave, loving, remarkable man, was born in East Angus, Quebec in 1923. He married the love of his life, Joan, in 1946 and they had a committed marriage enduring over 69 years. He was a lifelong outdoors enthusiast who continued to climb Fisher Peak and to enjoy his annual salmon fishing trips with his family until well into his 80s. Hunting, fishing, hiking, exploring - these were all passions he pursued with joy and skill. His strength and courage came to the fore during WWII when he stole his older brother's birth certificate and joined the Canadian Army in 1940 at age 16. He served with the joint USA/Canadian First Special Service Force (a commando unit known as "The Devil's Brigade"). After surviving injuries sustained in a parachuting accident, he served with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (R.H.L.I.), landing in Normandy just after D-Day in June 1944. He fought in several battles, including Caen, Verrieres Ridge, and the Falaise Gap. He was severely wounded on four separate occasions in October 16, 1944 during a night attack on Woensdrect (the battle of the Scheldt Estuary, Netherlands). Despite his injuries, he continued to lead his men to successfully secure an important objective against heavy odds. For his determination, bravery and inspired leadership, he was awarded the Military Medal for Valour by King George VI at an investiture at Buckingham Palace on February 16, 1945. Following WWII, Barney and Joan moved to British Columbia from Quebec. Their first "house" was a wall tent in Campbell River, where they coped with eight feet of snow their first winter. Barney was a jack-of-all trades, working at many different jobs, but he and Joan realized a long-time dream when they and their two young children moved to the East Kootenays and in 1960 bought and operated a cattle ranch at Mayook, near Cranbrook. They kept the ranch for over ten years. He then worked at Fort Steele and enjoyed restoring the old buildings, including the Theatre. Barney and Joan also lived a few years in New Denver and Kaslo, moving back to Cranbrook in 1985 to be close to the growing families of their two children. In their later years, outdoor activities continued to be a joint passion, but were interspersed with numerous adventure travel trips all over Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South and North America. Barney is survived by Joan, his wife of 69 years; his two children Patrick (Ellen) and Molly (Derald Cloarec); six grandchildren - Kristy (Ryan Comishin), Jennifer (Steve Kelly), Sean, Diana, Kellie, and Tania; as well as four great grandchildren - Brennan, Sadie, Clea, and Luke. He passed away in Cranbrook at 91 years of age, surrounded by his loving family. We would like to express our gratitude to the kind, respectful and supportive staff of the Moyie Unit of Joseph Creek Village for the care and encouragement provided to Barney and us. At Barney's request, there will be no funeral service. You were an example to us all, and we will miss you Barney, Dad, Poppo!
