SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908
Public rallies for murder victim’s family Communty mourns loss of woman killed in trailer park arson fire Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD
There has been a huge outpouring of sympathy and support for the children and family of Mission’s Eleanor Anthonysz who died in a suspected arson fire. The tragic incident occurred early last Friday. Residents at the Green Acres Mobile Home Park on Shook Road by Hatzic Lake woke up to see one of the mobile homes fully engulfed. Witnesses
saw Anthonysz’s two children escaped the blaze, their hands reportedly bound with plastic straps. They were both taken to hospital. Once fire crews extinguished the blaze, Anthonysz’s body was discovered inside. She was 33 years old. An investigation by Mission RCMP and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team quickly identified and arrested a suspect.
Walter Joseph Ramsay, 42, was arrested April 18 and charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of arson. The children, an 11-year-old girl and eight-year-old boy, have now been released from hospital. A memorial service will be held April 25 at 11 a.m. in Matsqui, at 5799 Riverside Rd. As the family tries to deal with the trauma, the community has begun orga-
nizing fundraisers to help lessen the burden. Dewdney Elementary School (37151 Hawkins Pickle Rd.) is accepting donations, and two GoFundMe accounts called Help Victims of Fatal Mission Fire and Help Ele’s Kids’ Future, have been established. As of Wednesday, both accounts have raised more than $13,600. CONTINUED ON 4

Hundreds of people walked across the new suspension bridge at Cascade Falls Regional Park for the first time this past weekend. The bridge, only the third its kind in the Lower Mainland, officially opened Saturday. The bridge is about 35 metres in length and is suspended 20 metres above Cascade Creek. Mission’s Save-On-Foods will host a fundraiser all week. Shoppers can pay for a chance to spin a wheel for prizes. All proceeds will go to the family. Stephanie Lock, a bartender at the Dewdney Pub, knew the victim and helped organize a fundraiser. “The whole community here knows the family and the victim and actually, unfortunately, the accused as well,” said Lock. The pub will host a burger and beer ($20 per ticket) fundraiser on Saturday from 4 p.m. until closing. The event will also include a silent auction and proceeds will go to the family. “I think a lot of people from the community will show up. I’ve been
getting phone calls already.” A shuttle service has been arranged to bring people from Hatzic Island to the pub and back. Lock said everyone is in shock after the incident, and the fundraiser is just something small they can do to help. “She was a neighbour, she was a friend, we know her kids. I mean it’s a tight-knit community.” Funds will help the children’s grandmother, Carole Watson, who is taking the children. Members of the community are helping her set up her home for two younger children, explained Lock. The kids also need new clothes after the fire destroyed all of their belongings. “Of course, there are three other victims involved, too. The accused’s children,” said Lock.

Man sentenced in Mission teen’s death Dale Boyd
Diamond Stud EARRINGS
BLACK PRESS
The family of a Mission teenager killed in a boating collision on Osoyoos Lake almost four years ago faced the man responsible for his death in a Penticton courtroom this week. Tensions peaked as the family of 18-yearold Marco Corbin yelled from the courtroom gallery when Ryan William Symington, 30, attempted to apologize, speaking for the first time towards the end of the hearing. The apology was too little and too late for the Corbin family members in the gallery, who showed their non-acceptance of the apology. “It’s coming back to you. You’re a (expletive) murderer,” Corbin’s brother said before he and other family members were escorted out of the courtroom by the sheriff and the hearing was briefly stood down. Symington was sentenced to 27 months in jail and a five-year driving prohibition through a joint submission from the Crown and the defence. Symington pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing death and one count of failure to stop at an accident causing bodily harm. The Mission teen was vacationing in the Okanagan on Aug. 16, 2011 when the incident took place. Marco was being towed behind a boat on a tube when he was struck by another boat. Criminal charges were not laid against Symington until three years later. Court documents in 2012 suggested alcohol, a lack of proper navigation lights and non-compliance with boating regulations on the part of both operators may have been factors in the crash. The Corbin family aired the true impact of the devastation from

losing their son, brother and nephew in open court prior to the sentencing. Marco’s mother, father, uncle and brother spoke about the effects of his death on the family, as Symington looked down and said nothing. “As I drove in here yesterday morning, I felt my insides start to break into pieces. My legs turned to rubber and my knees were weak, I felt like I had a fever and was going to be sick,” Elena Di Giovanni, Marco’s mother, told the court. “After this day is over, I never want to come back here again.” The dead teen’s father, Bob, explained how his world came to a dramatic end on Aug. 16, 2011. “It was such a seismic body blow, that I went from being a totally fulfilled father and husband to, without a thought, running to my bathroom where I found a bunch of medication that my elderly mother had left, looked in the mirror and said, ‘I’m out of here.’ No thought, no hesitation,” he said. Emptying the bottles into his mouth, Bob said he could not imaging living without his son. He told the court he fell to the floor, and were there not RCMP officers there
to revive him, he would have died. He fell into a coma and awoke in hospital days later. “I have never had one second since that hasn’t been filled with the pain and the poison of his
loss.” Marco was described as a gifted athlete, student and musician. A scholarship fund has been set up with the Mission Foundation in his memory.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Dealing with a tragedy
There are no words to comfort the family of murder victim Eleanor Anthonysz, who died last Friday when the mobile home she lived in was set on fire. While the suspect has been arrested and charged, the family – including Anthonysz’s two children who were inside the trailer but miraculously managed to escape – will likely not see justice done for several years as the legal system slowly grinds along. Even if the suspect is proven guilty it will not replace a lost mother, daughter and friend. Reportedly, the suspect, Walter Joseph Ramsay, has three children of his own. They will also have to deal with the loss of a father, if he is found guilty.
Should semi-trucks be rerouted from First Ave.?
If there is any glimmer of hope in this dark time, it lies in the actions of friends, neighbours and strangers. The community has rallied together to stand behind the family as they come to grips with the loss. The entire communities of Mission and Hatzic are showing their support. Fundraising events, large and small, are being held to raise money for the children, not only to replace items lost in the fire, but to ensure the kids, and their grandmother who will now take care of them, have what they need to move forward. It’s the only thing they can do to help – to provide funds, comfort and perhaps, some hope.

Plan looks to tame the ‘wild west’
Stave West master plan explores area’s recreational potential
The public campground at Sayres Lake provides beautiful views and plenty of recreational opportunities. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO
Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD
The tourism and recreational potential of Mission’s Stave West could soon be realized. A partnership between the provincial government, the District of Mission and the Kwantlen First Nation has led to the creation of the Stave West master plan. All three stakeholders have a vision for the area that would see it transformed from its current under-regulated and often abused state into a family-friendly destination for outdoor recreation and tourism development. Mission council adopted the plan at a special meeting last week and, within 60 days, an implementation team will be formed. The district has been managing forestry activity in Stave West – a 5,000-hectare area, situated in northern Mission around the west side of Stave Lake – for more than 56 years and public use has steadily increased.
According to a staff report, due to the uncontrolled access, the area has “attracted some undesirable users” and “has developed a bad reputation for illegal activities and public safety issues.” Those issues include illegal firearms use, garbage dumping, vandalism, motor vehicle accidents, forest fire incidents, environmental damage and the destruction of important local First Nations sacred archaeological sites. Because of this, the area has been unofficially branded as “the wild west” said Bob O’Neal, Mission’s director of forest management. O’Neal told council the plan would still allow for the area to be maintained as a working forest, while also allowing for more recreation and tourism with an “opportunity for employment and economic stimulation.” It would also maintain and protect the historical archaeological significance of the area.
Education and forest training programs are also being investigated. The area is already home to several legitimate recreational ventures including the Sayres Lake public campground, the Zajac Ranch private summer camp for underprivileged kids and a proposed Tim Horton’s children’s camp. Some investments and commitments have been made in road and recreation infrastructure. The previously committed provincial funding of $5 million announced in April 2013 is being used as matching funds for an application to the Western Diversification Fund submitted by Kwantlen First Nation with support from the District of Mission. The application has been submitted with the goal of securing the final $5 million required to complete the $10 million core infrastructure upgrades needed in the area. Upgrades include 11.5 kilometres of road construction/improve-
ments as well as additional power and telecommunications infrastructure. Other capital costs listed in the plan include approximately $500,000 to build a gateway/welcome centre, pay for marketing and branding strategies and other start-up costs needed over a period of several years. Estimated operational costs are in the $400,000 per year range for the first three years and should drop after strategies are established. Costs have not been finalized, nor has how they will be dispersed between the three partners. The report notes that identifying funding and grant opportunities for the project is a top priority. User fees and corporate sponsorship are already being considered. “Personally, I would say this is the beginning of a brand new culture for Mission,” said Coun. Rhett Nicholson. He, and fellow Coun. Pam Alexis, have been closely involved in the creation of the plan. Nicholson called the possibilities for the area endless. He said there are already people out there “mountain biking and ATVing and 4x4ing so to have a nice, organized, safe place for them to go and other associations to come to Mission and see what we have to offer, well, it’s going to be huge for Mission and tourism.” And making the plan public has other benefits, according to Nicholson. “I think the good thing about the announcement is that it will open
the eyes to development in that area.” He believes commercial opportunities, including zip lines and other recreational businesses will want to come to Mission. “I feel it has the potential to be the next Squamish or Whistler,” said Nicholson, calling Mission a “natural tourist destination.” To view the complete plan, visit mission. ca/wp-content/uploads/ SWMP_Complete.pdf.

Federal funding for harbour Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD.
Mission will receive the majority portion of $450,000 of federal funding allocated for improvement projects at the small craft harbours in Mission and Kanaka Landing. Randy Kamp, MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission, made the announcement Friday
afternoon at the Mission harbour. The investment will support the reconstruction of the electrical systems at both harbours as well as the installation of a concrete breakwater float in Mission. “Without question, small craft harbours are the cornerstone of the commercial fishing industry,” said Kamp.

While he would not give exact figures, Kamp did say that the Mission harbour would receive the majority of the $450,000 in funding, because there were two separate upgrade projects taking place, compared to one at Kanaka Landing. Alec Finnsson, chair of the Mission Harbour Authority was on hand for the announcement and said his group is “thrilled” about the improvements that the government will help fund. “The installation of the new concrete float will allow the Mission Harbour Authority to complete the replacement of an aged structure, and the electrical upgrades will benefit all of the fishermen and boaters who use our harbour,” he explained. He told the small crowd that the harbour has a long history and currently provides a home port to a new generation of commercial fishers. Work is expected to begin in the summer.

Two Mission men were shot during a home invasion on Friday morning. At approximately 4:30 a.m., the RCMP received a call for assistance at a home on Cardinal Street. Police attended the large residential property and found two 27-year-old males with gunshot wounds. The two wounded men had been in the residence when two suspects broke in. An altercation ensued and both residents were shot by the suspects who then fled the scene. The gunshot wounds were not life-threatening and both wounded men were transported to hospital for treatment. A medicinal marijuana grow operation was located on the property. Anyone with information can call the Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161. Anyone who wants to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-2228477. A cash reward of up to $2,000 will be paid for any information which leads to an arrest and charge.

The Mission Record Friday, April 24, 2015 11
Crowd critical Power of good of CPC plans Blog.blackpress4good.com Canada Post Corporation was accused of destroying a public service Monday night as residents and postal workers packed council chambers at municipal hall to discuss the elimination of door-to-door mail delivery in Mission. The change is part of the corporation’s fivepoint plan to reduce operating costs by more than $700 million a year. About 7,700 homes in Mission already receive mail from a community mailbox (CMB), and the change will affect 6,100 addresses. When the conversion in completed later this year, close to 99 per cent of residents will be served by CMBs. Gilles Chagnon, manager of municipal engagement for CPC, explained letter mail has decreased significantly over the years and currently only one-third of Canadians receive their mail at their door. He also described the benefits of a CMB, such as individual compartments can fit about 80 per cent of mail sent, and the larger boxes at the bottom can accommodate the rest. But when Chagnon said theft is rare from CMBs, many in the audience couldn’t hold back their chuckles of doubt. “The new units are constructed to be more secure and tamper proof,” said Chagnon. CPC representatives were invited to the meeting to address the issue, but provided few answers to council and the audience. No decisions have yet been made about the future of the post office building on First Avenue when mail sorting will be removed and centralized in Abbotsford, or where residents will pick up their mail if a CMB has been broken into. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” said Chad Schella, director of government affairs. CPC representatives were also criticized for the lack of community consultation during the process so far. A retired postal worker noted one of the new CMB locations is in front of her house, but nobody has talked to her about it. Schella explained consultations are still under-
way and the door knocking campaign to discuss the changes is still ongoing. A toll free number, 1-844-454-3009, has also been set up to address any concerns residents may have, but some who have called the number complained they did not receive any responses or a call back. Retired letter carrier Sophie Zehner said CPC has its mind made up to go ahead with its plan and the only thing residents can do is to vote in this year’s election to show their disapproval. “It’s not just about money,” said Zehner, noting letter carriers regularly visit elderly residents and keep an eye on them to make sure they’re okay. CPC will be responsible for the maintenance of the super mailboxes, including picking up litter around the site, removing graffiti, and repairing any damage. Schella added it would take up to 48 hours to clean graffiti and three weeks to repair a CMB.

Re-routing trucks away from downtown considered Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Truck traffic on First Avenue is under scrutiny. Mission council is considering a move to ban semi-truck traffic on the downtown street. Trucks travelling westbound from Stave Lake Street to Wren Street on the Lougheed Highway could be re-routed at Murray Street. District staff suggest
truck drivers could turn left from the highway onto the Murray Street overpass, travel along Highway 11 and meet up with the Lougheed again at the north end of the Mission Bridge. Staff studied the two routes, ran trucks along both during peak periods in the morning and afternoon, and found there were no significant issues with traffic queues
New Patients Welcome!
or time differences. “I’ve been saying for years there’s no difference in (travel time) for trucks, said Coun. Jim Hinds. Re-routing truck traffic was one of the issues the Downtown Business
Association raised. Originally, the request was to re-route traffic during the day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but Mission’s director of engineering, Tracy Kyle, suggested council may want to consider making it full-time.
The district will ask the provincial government to examine the issue and share the cost for implementing any changes. Other downtown cost sharing projects the district wants the province to consider are re-paint-
ing the crosswalks every two years, and improving the streetscape, such as street lights, decorative features and open spaces. A cost for the work has not yet been determined, but Mission has about
$1.8 million in its Community Works Gas Tax Reserve Fund available. Council is still interested in developing a plaza in the downtown, but will be waiting until the future of the post office is determined.

District Update THIS IS OUR MISSION In the Spotlight
Parks, Recreation & Culture
McTaggart St – Public Hearing Rescheduled The “McTaggart” public hearing date has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 29 at 7:00 pm at Hatzic Secondary School, 34800 Dewdney Trunk Rd, Mission, BC This change in date was necessitated by a conflict in events taking place at the school. On Wednesday the school will be used solely for the purpose of the Public Hearing. If you have any questions, please contact Tina Penney at 604.820.3706 or tpenney@mission.ca.
Water Main Cleaning Water main cleaning is a key component of maintaining water quality. Annually the District of Mission cleans approximately 20% of the water system mains. Cleaning is achieved by inserting disinfected bullet shaped foam swabs into the water main via a fire hydrant and then allowing the water pressure to push the swabs through the main scrubbing the pipe sidewalls to a fire hydrant at the end of the main where the swabs and the scoured debris are flushed out of the water main.
Landfill for direct burial. If dropping off dog waste at the landfill, please let the scale-house operator know what you are bringing in, so that the material does not get mixed with regular household garbage. $1,000 raised in two hours Riverside College’s motto is “Be remarkable!” and the 2015 Community Support Worker class recently proved that they mean it. The class was challenged by their instructor to raise $400 for Mission Community Services’ homelessness programs in two hours, but, with the support of many local businesses and citizens, they managed to raise two-and-ahalf times that amount. “It’s an amazing tradition within our group,”
said Paul Horn, the CSW class instructor. “Our aim is to demonstrate to students the power of community and the power of teamwork. What makes this an even more challenging undertaking is that the students have absolutely no prior knowledge they are going to be presented with this task, and they are not allowed to use their own money.” They had to determine a strategy, set up team processes, and get started. Spontaneously
raising $1,000 in 120 minutes is a remarkable achievement for the students and Mission, Horn said. “I am proud of how quickly the people of Mission were willing to jump in and contribute to their community,” said student Brittany Pallett. Tina Rutherford, also a student in the program, described how the course has been a lifechanger for her. “The CSW course has shown me how a small
group of people can make a huge difference in a community. It has been such a pleasure to be involved in the class.” Sanjay Gulati, executive director of Mission Community Services, said they are grateful for the funding, and for the advocacy provided by the students. “The money these students have raised will support the MY (Mission Youth) House project, a true reflection of collaboration and community program.”

Stringing of the transmission line (conductors) along the new transmission towers for the Interior to Lower Mainland Transmission Project has begun. Helicopters are required for this work. The contractor has obtained the necessary permits and permissions and is in compliance with Transport Canada requirements. Conductor ends will need to be joined with the use of an implosive connector that is a metallic sleeve with a small charge in it for each conductor. Using safe and controlled methods, the sleeves are detonated which compresses (welds) the conductor ends together. This split-second process will create several flashes with smoke and very loud bangs.

The Bible tells us that God has given each of us different gifts and that He wants us to use these gifts in accordance with the grace that He has bestowed upon us. When we think about these special gifts that someone may possess, we naturally think about great talents like those of a famous artist, or a skilled surgeon. However, most of us have more common everyday gifts that we are required to use in our daily lives. We should try to recognize and take pride in the different gifts and talents that our Heavenly Father has given to us, and we should use these offerings for His glory. Whether we are given the gift of being a parent, a teacher, or a taxi driver, we should try to do our very best, and we should always be appreciative of God’s caring love for us. Our Lord wants the best for us, and our serving others, reflects our love for Him. We should willingly share our talents with others and we should do it generously. We should work hard, and whenever we show kindness to others, we should do it cheerfully.

Meeting the needs of seniors Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD
Mission seniors looking for a home to call their own are often frustrated by a lack of available housing. But there are options out there. The non-profit organization, Mission Association for Seniors’ Housing (MASH), is responsible for creating the Cedar Valley Manor building project. The 42-unit complex was created using the life lease method. “A life lease is a form of seniors housing that is especially suitable for non-profit organizations,” explained Kate Mancer, director of Mission’s Cedar Valley Manor. She explained that many non-profits want to do something about seniors housing in their communities, but in many cases they don’t have the capital to build the project. “A life lease works by getting the money to build the building from the people who will live in it.”
In the case of the Mission building, owners have a 30-year, less a day, lease. It is configured that way to avoid the property transfer tax. When people move out, they get back a minimum of 95 per cent of their money. If there has been capital appreciation between the time they move in and the time they move out, that is shared between the out-going resident and MASH. “It’s a way of creating good quality seniors housing without having to rely on public funding, because basically there is no government funding for seniors housing. “So if non-profits don’t step up to the plate, it won’t get built,” said Mancer. Life lease is not a new concept. It began in the prairies about 35 years ago. “There are many, many life leases in the prairies and Ontario. In B.C., we’re a little behind the curve but we’re catching up,” said Mancer.

She noted that one of the largest life leases in Canada is located in Surrey. In order to begin construction, organizers needed to pre-sell (receive a 17 per cent down payment) on half of the units. Once that level was reached, the lender, Envision Financial, granted MASH a construction loan. “The building is up now and whenever we sell a unit, we send that money off to Envision.” To date, 32 of the 42 units are sold and the construction loan is almost completely paid off. “The response has been tremendous.” Organizers are hoping to sell the final 10 units during its grand opening celebration on April 25. The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. and everyone is welcome to take a look. Cedar Valley Manor is located at 8358 Cedar Street in Mission.

Linking hands through generations Meet . . .
WENDY MATUS
INTRODUCTION Wendy moved to Mission when she was 14 and has been a part of the community now for 60 years. She and her husband founded Matus Appliance and ran it for 30 years. Originally, it was a repair business that was run out of their home. With a focus on customer service, the business grew and now operates out of a store on Wren Street. Wendy retired nine years ago and now her son, Chris, and his wife, Shelly, continue the family tradition. VOLUNTEER Wendy has been a member of the morning Rotary Club for 20 years, and served on the executive for about 10 years. She also volunteers with the Mission Arts Centre, and after she retired, she joined the Mission Healthcare Auxiliary. She said she was grateful to the community for supporting her business and wanted to give back. Usually Wendy likes to stay behind the scenes, but she has stepped out of her comfort zone in order to take on bigger roles with the auxiliary. Wendy has been on the executive for close to six years and is the group’s president this year. KEEPING ACTIVE Wendy lives close to the core of Mission and enjoys walking downtown and to Fraser River Heritage Park. She knits, plays bridge, and tries to go out every day. “Volunteering has been a fun experience. Everything people donate to The Cottage (on First Avenue, run by Mission Healthcare Auxiliary) goes back into the hospital in different forms, like comforts for patients or medical equipment. Everything stays in Mission.”

Over the last year members of Lifetime Learning Centre Society, students and teachers from both Fraserview Learning Centre and Riverside College have participated in the Linking Hands through the Generations project. This project is a Lifetime Learning Centre program that is designed to engage youth and seniors in intergenerational mentoring and to promote connections between these two communities of learners. The project saw seniors and students come together to share and learn new skills. In one series of courses, seniors brought tablets, computers, and phones to class and students provided hands on technical skills on how to use and get the most out of their devices. The next week students joined the “Warm Fuzzies Knitting Group” and learned from seniors how to create items such as scarfs and hats. At the end of the knitting series everyone was proudly displaying their creations and one student was heard to say, “Now when I get stressed I grab my knitting.” In “I have a Story to Tell – Writers Group,” seniors and students with the assistance of an experienced writing guide began writing down their life experiences and memories. Final stories were displayed and discussed at the 8th Annual Writers & Readers
Festival in March. As the saying goes you need to keep active and fit as well and students and seniors had the opportunity to participate together in yoga classes and in the annual Walkathon and Health Fair. There was also time to share in community events: At the Remembrance Day Tea students shared their hopes of peace through their art and seniors shared their stories on living through periods of war. At Christmas the students prepared and served a Christmas dinner along with entertainment by both groups. In the “Heritage Week Fashion Show – Main Street”, everyone worked to demonstrate and celebrate 60 years of fashion trends. As the recipients of the Government of Canada’s New Horizon’s for Seniors Program, Linking Hands through the Generations, Lifetime Learning Centre Society is grateful to the Government of Canada for their financial support and to our members, instructors, staff, students, and partners at School District 75 who with their energy and willingness to share their experiences, skills and wisdom made the project a rewarding experience for everyone. MINI is bringing a completely new meaning to driving glasses. At the Shanghai Auto show, the BMW sub-brand has offered first sight of its revolutionary eyewear. “MINI Augmented Vision gives an insight into how intelligent connectivity between a MINI car and eyewear into which relevant content is projected might work in the future,” explained Dr. Jörg Preißinger, projectmanager MINI Augmented Vision, BMW Group research and technology. “Working with several Qualcomm companies, we have created an interlinked system and augmented reality eyewear with
a characteristic MINI design that revolutionize the experience both in and outside the vehicle. This prototype with its customized, interactive functions succeeds in fusing augmented reality with the brand’s trademark sense of lifestyle.” Using see-through technology, the eyewear projects information in the driver’s direct field of view without concealing other traffic. “We are proud to have helped develop a breakthrough augmented reality interface between eyewear and the automobile,” said Jay Continued on page 26

High tech glasses offers a look into the future
Wright, Vice President, Qualcomm Connected Experiences, Inc. “MINI Augmented Vision offers a compelling example of what’s possible today, and what we can expect in the future.” The technology will enable drivers to enter destination details outside of the car then transfer the information to the on-board navigation.
The navigation will then display from the current location to the vehicle or from the vehicle to the final destination. Direction instructions in the shape of coloured arrows will appear projected on the road ahead at the turns. Current speed and posted speed limits will be projected into the driver’s field of view above the steering wheel, without obscuring the road ahead. A small icon shows in the eyewear when a message is received and the SMS message can then be read out by the “car”. Now this is an amazing feature: A virtual view through parts of the vehicle (such as A-pillars and doors) makes visible external areas or objects concealed by the car’s body parts! keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Ella Lillian (Stadnick) (Locken) Jan. 14, 1926 ~ April 16, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother. Born in Ratcliffe, Saskatchewan in 1926 she grew up on the farm with five siblings. She became a school teacher until she met her husband Stan and they started married life in Radville, SK, having three children; Warren, Marcella and Nancy. The family relocated to Abbotsford, BC in the late 60’s. Ella found herself single in the 70’s and started her own catering business at the Skyline Club located at the Abbotsford Airport. She remained a very active part of the community, catering to weddings, graduations and to the club’s membership. Ella remarried Norman Arseneault and had many happy years in Abbotsford. She loved playing Bingo and was always up for a game of cards. The last decade she resided at the Menno Home and Cottage facility in Abbotsford. Her last year was spent in the Dr. Andrew Pavillion in Summerland, BC which placed her close to family members. She was given excellent care at these facilities and we would like to sincerely thank the staff for their loving care and kindness. She was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. At Ella’s request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the South Okanagan, Similkameen Medical Foundation, at the Dr. Andrew Pavilion Activity Department, 12815 Atkinson Road, Summerland, BC V0H 1Z0.
With sadness, we announce the passing of Charles “Rae” Robins on April 1, 2015. Rae was born in Williams Lake, British Columbia. Many of his childhood years were spent in the Peace Country of British Columbia including the communities of Charlie Lake, Fort St. John and Baldonnel. Rae came to Mission in 1972 with his young family. He worked for Canadian Longyear in Fort St. John and Vancouver. The remainder of his career was spent at Canada Post. He is survived by his sons: Will and Mark (Heather); grandchildren: Mackenzie, Zach, Emma, and Liam; sisters: Ellen (George), Ann (Al), and Allana (Bob); along with many nieces and nephews. There were many other very important people in his life that will always be considered family: Yvonne, Paul, Chris, Treena, Matt, Meghan, Courtney, Sadie, and Kaitlin.
