Vintage fire truck gets new heart A R N E P E T RYS H E N

CRANBROOK HISTORY CENTRE

Phase I of museum set to open BARRY COULTER

Exciting days are at hand for the Cranbrook Heritage Centre. The museum and archives complex, formerly known as the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, will be holding a grand opening of Phase 1 of the new Cranbrook Museum and model railway display. Events are set for Friday, May 1 (members only) and Saturday, May 2 (general public). “The conceptual designs were done a year and a half ago,” said Charlotte Murray, the Centre’s Executive Director. “It’s been evolving ever since. “Different members of the community have loaned us artifacts” Phase 1 of the Cranbrook Museum is the lower flow of the eastern side of the complex, known as the freight shed. It is now home to a growing collection of displays and artifacts representing a comprehensive history of Cranbrook and the East Kootenay. These include paleontological and paleogeological artifacts, natural history and wildlife (including donations from Aasland Taxidermy), examples of heritage fashion (including, notably, one of the first wedding dresses ever worn in Cranbrook), and business and railroad history. There is also a section devoted to the Ktunaxa.

Thanks to a band of volunteers the City’s 1929 International Ladder fire truck will have a newer engine and drivetrain. The volunteers are mostly made up of current firefighters, along with Larry LaPointe at the helm of the project. The truck carried ladders and equipment like shovels and axes for the fire fighters of the day. A water pump sits on the front. The truck was originally being worked on at the Public Works yard, but a concerns from the City lead to the project being moved to LaPointe’s garage. LaPointe explained that the purpose of what the engine and transmission swap is to deal with a number of issues that the 86-yearold fire truck had while running. “They’d have trouble in the parades, it ran hot and was hard to shift and those kinds of things,” he added. For instance, the truck had a manual gearbox that required double clutching, which was difficult to do smoothly. The engine was also not very cooperative at staying running in the parades, LaPointe said. The old engine won’t go to waste — with plans for a cosmetic restoration and a display spot on the fire hall.

There are several different types of tick protection available through your veterinarian. Some topical preventatives are applied directly to the skin at the back of the neck and others that be given in pill form. Both are effective, convenient, methods of controlling these ectoparasites. Ask your veterinarian for more information on which method is best suited for your pet.

Ktunaxa classroom opens at COTR Barry Coulter

The Sookenai Drum Group performed at the Aboriginal Gathering Place following a ceremony opening the Ktunaxa classroom at the College of the Rockies.

The College of the Rockies dedicated a room for the Ktunaxa Education and Employment Sector on Wednesday, April 22, and marked the occasion with a special ceremony. The dedicated classroom will provide a visible point of continuity for new or potential aboriginal students to connect with current Ktunaxa students. The room will host programs such as Bladerunners — an employment training program focussed on providing job readiness skills and education — and the Ktunaxa Workplace Essential Skills training that are currently held in other locations within the College. It will also provide a location for cultural activities, workshops, drop-in sessions, coaching and mentoring sessions and more. The classroom project has been a partnership between the College of the Rockies and the Ktunaxa Education and Employment Sector, and on Wednesday dignitaries praised the teamwork and vision of that partnership. Stan Chung, Vice President of Education for COTR, said it was an hon-

our “to be guests on Ktunaxa Nation Territory.” Chung thanked everyone who’d worked hard to make it possible, and mentioned specifically “how much work the Deans and Nation teams have done in relationship building. “This is our 40th anniversary this year,” Chung said, “and we would not have been here without the nation walking beside us. Wherever we’re going, we’re going together.” Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair Kathryn Teneese said this event had been a long time in the making. “We can long back on those years when we didn’t have any post-secondary education in this region … now it’s a reality. “We all know education is the future, to change our circumstance, to build capacity, and create the workforce that we need, for our young people and for our older people too. “The world is there, and we need to work towards providing ourselves with choices and opportunities.” The throng then moved over to the Ktunaxa Gathering Place to listen to the music of the Sookenai Drum Group and enjoy lunch.

Vintage truck Continued from page 1 “It had the original engine and tranny up until now, but it was getting to the point where it wouldn’t run through a parade or we couldn’t keep it running, so that was the idea, to swap it out so that we could still use it around town,” explained Paul Relkoff. The original engine was a 1929 Lycoming flathead six engine. In 2001, they did a similar project to the City’s vintage 1924 fire trunk. The new engine comes out of a 1980 Mercury Cougar. “There was a lot of fabricating to make it work,” LaPointe said. “But we don’t butcher anything on the truck. We don’t do any cutting or welding on the frame or anything.” For instance, the engine mounts on the newer engine were fitted to plates that lined up with some of the bolt holes already on the frame. They did have to drill a few holes,

but opted for as clean looking of an install as possible. That leaves the option open for the truck to be restored to the original drivetrain in the future. The wiring was also converted from six volt to 12 volt. The City of Cranbrook actually purchased the truck brand new in 1929. It was bought by the City of Edgewater in 1955, but then was purchased back and returned to Cranbrook in 1979. At that time it was fully restored. A part of the frame that was removed was restored and it was brought back to as close to original shape as possible. Helping the project along are Murray Robertson, Paul Relkoff, Cody Swanson, Ken Gaudreault and Bryan Home. They have also had great support from businesses around town that have been glad to help out.

Paul Relkoff welds some components in the engine bay of the 1929 International ladder truck.

which will house all paleo and natural history components. This will be located in the lower freight shed. Phase three will be comprise the upper floor of the freight shed area, 5,000 square feet that will be comprised of four galleries, studio space and possibly a cafe. The museum expansion is contributing to what is already a heritage gem, central to the region. The Cranbrook History Centre, is probably best known for known for its extensive collection vintage rail cars, the sumptuous Royal Alexandra Hall, and the Cranbrook archives — which are the second largest such archives in B.C. But the whole Centre contains “tons of history, waiting to be unleashed for residents to see,” Murray said, and the expansion and renovations currently in the works extend beyond the freight shed to the western end of the complex. The gift shop has been expanded, and the space above the gift shop will be renovated as office

space. Murray says ideally these offices would be rented out to like-minded heritage or culture organizations. Currently these rooms are used for storage, including the original table and chairs from Cranbrook’s first city council. The Cranbrook History Centre, as it is now known, has always been a great tourist attraction — 2 million cars a year drive by on Van Horne Street. But an increasingly important part of the Centre’s mandate of is to make locals aware of the resource that is key to Cranbrook’s historical self, to bring them out the Centre and enjoy it as much as passing tourists. “We want to engage local residents and welcome them,” Murray said. “Times have changed.” The grand opening will be a two-day affair. The May 1 relaunch will feature a reception for Cranbrook History Centre members and invited guests. On Saturday, May 2, the Museum will be open to the public.

Guy Davis superb at Studio 64 M IKE RE D FERN

It’s difficult not to indulge in extensive hyperbole about Tuesday night’s concert by New York bluesman, Guy Davis, at Studio 64. It was wonderful entertainment. Standing tall on the small stage facing a full house of expectant blues fans, Davis plunged into the opening number on his 12-string guitar, his powerful voice riveting the audience, electronic reverb adding depth to the instrumental sound, and left us spellbound. Utter silence followed the applause for each number as the audience waited in thrilled anticipation for the next one. The man was magic.

It did not take long, however, before Davis’ big smile and his humorous asides tucked between the lines of his songs had the audience laughing. And when he invited us to sing along on certain chorus lines, he had us in the palm of his hand. Soon it was just a lot of fun. Switching between 12-string and 6-string guitars, and manipulating those dicky little electronic foot pedals, Davis varied the style of songs and accompaniment, taking us from deep south Delta blues to Dylan and Donovan and the Rolling Stones. Many of the numbers were written by Davis, one or two of them as yet unrecorded, and

when he sang about women and love and sex he added some body language that obviously delighted the female half of the audience, judging from their peals of laughter. The man was a consummate entertainer. Guy Davis was last in the East Kootenay about 12 years ago when he appeared at the Key City Theatre. For most of last night’s audience he can’t come back too soon. The third and final concert in this spring’s

Live at Studio 64 concert series takes place on Saturday, May 23, when Blue Moon Marquee from the Alberta Badlands comes to town. This duo of A.W. Cardinal (guitar, vocals, harmonica) and Jasmine Colette (bass, drums, vocals) are usually considered a gypsy blues band but their music has been variously tagged as delta blues, folk, swing, and ragtime at one time or another. Playing primarily original compo-

sitions, they owe their style origins to the likes of Django Reinhardt. It promises to be another great concert. Advance tickets, available from Centre 64 and online at snapd. eastkootenay.com, are $22 Kimberley Arts Council members, $24 non-members, or $26 at the door, although the likelihood of there being any tickets left to purchase at the door is negligible, given the last two sold out events.

All the unwanted garbage was consumed as a way of was fighting for its life. keeping the city cleaner. So let’s explore the concept a little bit. So often, however, the gospels use this The Bible never uses the word “hell” understood in that way. The Bible uses image and many others as metaphors. four different words which are all translat- Like the image of a camel trying to squeeze through the eye of a needle, Jesus uses ed by this same word in English. The Old Testament uses the word hyperbole to make his point. For Jesus, “Sheol”. It is a nebulous, ethereal realm, Gehenna becomes a teaching tool to help but most importantly, it is a neutral place motivate people to do right in this life.

Jesus uses it as a metaphorical ‘stick’. In the same way as the garbage fire kept the city clean, so God would use metaphorical fire to clean up our lives. It’s important to remember, however, that the gospels only use “Gehenna” 11 times. Jesus rarely spoke about the ‘stick’ and spent far more time offering the ‘carrot’. Jesus describes the kingdom of God in much more positive ways to describe the blessings of living in godly ways on earth that demonstrate that we are citizens of God’s beloved community and realm. Jesus never tries to guilt us or beat us into the kingdom of God through fear. It is always an invitation, a gracious welcoming into a new way of living with compassion and grace and love. As a result, I don’t follow Jesus in order to go to heaven when I die. Conversely, I don’t follow Jesus to avoid going to hell. That’s much too small a vision. It’s a cheap form of faith that is really nothing more than eternal fire insurance. Do I believe in hell? Certainly. But I suspect that the only hells that exist are the ones that we create and allow to exist. Too often, we make “hell on earth.” But that’s not the gospel. The gospel is that we are invited to follow Jesus here and now so that we might experience wholeness and grace, compassion and peace, goodness and love. These are the gifts given to us as we give ourselves away in love for the service of all people and all creature. I believe that we are called to live as the people God created us to be here and now. This is what the gospel of John calls “abundant or eternal life”. For me, that’s the whole purpose and raison d’être of being a Christian. Opinion/Events Letters to the Editor

Relay for Life I am thrilled and honored to be Cranbrook’s Relay For Life Honorary Chair this year. The Canadian Cancer Society and their research and fundraising efforts are very important to me. In 2012 I was diagnosed with grade IV brain cancer and have been in treatment ever since. My kind of cancer, Glioblastoma Multiforme, is a hard to treat cancer with a low survival rate. The average life expectancy is 12-14 months and I am so happy to have beaten that statistic. The improvements in cancer outcomes would not be possible without the research supported by the Canadian Cancer Society. The Canadian Cancer Society has the greatest impact against the most cancers across Canada and leads the charge in prevention methods through education and advocacy efforts. Without them, there would be fewer advance-

ments in not only treatment but in prevention, early detection and screening; as well as less support for patients and their families during this difficult time. Few people are aware of the full scope of support programs the Society has to offer, including financial support to offset travel and accommodation expenses, lodges to stay at during treatment, peer support programs and information services. The Canadian Cancer Society has been an incredible resource to me since diagnosis. One of the supports they offer is free wig banks, and I’ll never forget how amazing they were when I lost my hair. It may seem superficial, but it took a toll on me. At that point I not only felt sick, I looked it. I knew I wanted a wig and the Society was there with a number of options. When none of the wigs at the Cranbrook location worked, they contacted the Vancouver office who sent me two beautiful options. One

Katie Norton was the perfect color and once it was cut, it looked exactly how my hair had before. They completely understood how important this was to me and did everything they could to ensure I was happy. I am really excited about Relay this year for a lot of reasons. This year’s theme is “Filling the Pot of Gold at the End of the Cancer Rainbow,” where each team gets to choose a

cancer that is significant to them and raise awareness about that type of cancer! It’s also a fun way to brand your team - choose shirts in the cancer’s color, base your team’s name on it, etc. It will be amazing to see all the different cancers represented this year. I am also incredibly grateful to Brain Canada, as this year they are matching all donations dedicated to brain cancer. So for every dollar donated, two dollars will go to brain cancer! The June 6th Relay For Life is located right in the heart of downtown in Rotary Park from 4:30 pm-10:30 pm. To create your own team or join an existing one, head to www.relayforlife.ca/cranbrookkimberley. I look forward to seeing you all there to support the amazing work of the Canadian Cancer Society. Warriors of the Squared Circle

JANUS:

Then & Now

Jim Cameron

O

kay, let’s get this “squared circle” thing cleared up at the outset. The squared circle refers to a ring, as in a boxing or wrestling ring, which isn’t really a ring but rather a square. Many years ago, competitors used to compete in a circle but when ropes were added it was squared up. Wrestling is the subject here. Not WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) or its precursor WWF (World Wrestling Federation), however. Not even Stampede Wrestling and the Saturday night television voice of Ed Whalen calling the show. We’re talking old-time wrestling which wasn’t all that much different than modern day wrestling. It had choreography and dramatic storylines and larger-than-life characters acting out scenes that vaguely resembled serious sport.

It’s bigger now: the WWE televises about 320 events a years to an audience of 36 million in 150 countries. Wrestling is lucrative. The earliest local wrestling occurred at Fort Steele, which, by July, 1898, and probably earlier, was chic enough to feature J.C. O’Neill of Kalispell, the champion catch-weight (irregular weight class) of the Northwest taking on W.H. West of Seattle, the champion middle-weight of the Northwest, in a ten-round contest at the opera house (take that, Figaro). Tickets were $1.00 each, about $25 by today’s standards. The first wrestling in Cranbrook appears to have taken place in July, 1899, during the Dominion (Canada) Day celebrations on Moir Park, one of those former local landmarks that the city council of the day decided we could all do without. The programme featured football, baseball, a bicycle parade and lots of horse racing — including a cigar horse race in which contestants had to saddle their horse, light a cigar, ride 300 yards and pass the post with the cigar lit and the saddle cinched, but that’s not important now — nor was it then as it was cancelled due to a lack of entrants.

Winterhawks’ Bjorkstrand and Wheat Kings’ McGauley named WHL Player of the Year finalists Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Brandon Wheat Kings’ forward Tim McGauley and Portland Winterhawks’ forward Oliver Bjorkstrand have been named finalists for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL Player of the Year for the 2014-15 season. The Western Hockey League made the announcement Thursday afternoon. McGauley is the Eastern Conference nominee for the WHL’s annual p l a y e r- o f - t h e - y e a r award, while Bjorkstrand represents the league’s Western Conference. A native of Wilcox, Sask., McGauley led the Wheat Kings in scoring this past season, tallying 42 goals and 105 points over the full 72-game slate. Those totals were good enough to rank him third league-wide. Through 10 playoff games, the 19-year-old has contributed four goals and nine points to help the Wheat Kings advance to the 2015 WHL Eastern Conference final. McGauley and the Wheat Kings fire up their conference finale on home ice Friday night when the Calgary Hit-

men roll into Brandon. Last year at the NHL Entry Draft, McGauley was passed over by all 30 pro clubs. Heading into the 2015 edition of the NHL’s annual draft, McGauley has been ranked 165th amongst North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Service. WHL fans in Cranbrook were lucky enough to get a brief glimpse of McGauley’s abilities when the Wheat Kings visited Western Financial Place Feb. 6 and 7. The 6-foot, 185-pound centre posted three goals and five points in the Wheat Kings weekend in Cranbrook. McGauley came to the Wheat Kings via the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft after being selected during the first round with the 20th-overall pick. In 225 career games, McGauley has registered 80 goals and 210 points. Unlike McGauley, Cranbrook hockey fans weren’t lucky enough to take in the brilliance of Bjorkstrand during the 2014-15 WHL campaign. His Portland Winterhawks stayed home, hosting the Kootenay Ice Nov. 28 in the

lone meeting between the two clubs. A native of Herning, Denmark, Bjorkstrand returned to the Winterhawks after an extended stay with the Columbus Blue Jackets, who selected the 20-year-old with the 89th-overall pick in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. From there, the Danish dynamo demolished the WHL, tallying 118 points to lead the league in regular-season scoring. “I had a good second half of the year,” Bjorkstrand told Sunaya Sapurji of Yahoo! Sports on April 17. “I really took off, because I feel like I had a slow start. I came back from Columbus training camp and I guess it was a slow start for me and the team -we lost a lot of games and nobody really got going. “For me the turning point was really after I played at the world juniors at Christmas time. That’s when I really stepped my game up and started feeling a lot of confidence and the team started to get a lot of confidence, too. That’s where it all started for me.”

The 6-foot, 168pound winger came to the Winterhawks via the 26th overall selection at the 2012 CHL Import Draft. In 193 career games, Bjorkstrand has burned WHL goaltenders for 144 goals while setting up 156 others, good for 290 points. Canada advances at U-18 championship CANADIAN PRESS

ZUG, Switzerland - Canada has advanced to the semifinals of the world under-18 hockey championship with a 5-3 win over Sweden on Thursday. Mitchell Stephens led Canada with two goals and an assist, with Jansen Harkins, Deven Siederoff and Graham Knott also scoring. Lucas Carlsson, Joel Eriksson and Carl Grundstrom scored for Sweden. Zachary Sawchenko stopped 24 of shots for Canada, while Felix Sandstrom made 29 saves for Sweden. Canada will face the United States in the semifinal round on Saturday. The Americans advanced with a 7-2 win over the Czech Republic. The other semifinal will feature Finland and Switzerland. The host Swiss advanced with a shock

5-0 win over Russia, while the Finns blanked Slovakia 3-0. Canada took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Harkins and Stephens, but Carlsson got the Swedes on the board with a power-play goal just 64 seconds after Stephens scored. Siederoff scored with 34 second left in the first period to restore Canada’s two-goal lead. The Swedes came back again with Eriksson’s goal at 2:51 of the second, but Stephens scored his second of the game to put Canada up 4-2 after 20 minutes. Grundstrom and Knott traded goals 22 seconds apart in the third period to finish the scoring. Canada’s Mathew Barzal had two assists in the game to give him 12 points, tied with Auston Matthews of the U.S. for the tournament lead.

Toronto Blue Jays place catcher Dioner Navarro on DL ASSOCIATED PRESS

TORONTO - The Blue Jays have placed catcher Dioner Navarro on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and recalled catcher Josh Thole from Triple-A Buffalo. The switch-hitting Navarro is batting .276 with four RBIs in eight games. The move is retroactive to April 22. Navarro suffered the injury trying to stretch a

single into a double in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s 13-6 win over Baltimore. He was thrown out by Delmon Young on the play and grabbed the back of his left leg as he arrived at second base before slowly leaving the field. Thole hit .269 with three RBIs in seven games at Buffalo. A six-year veteran who previously played for the New York Mets, he’s considered a specialist at catching former Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball.

Memorial Trophy are determined through a voting process, which includes general managers, coaches and media representatives of each WHL club.

Former athletes speak to challenges and triumphs of LGBTQ inclusion in sports L auren L a Rose Canadian Press

TORONTO - When Canadian swimmer Mark Tewksbury won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, there were no gay characters on TV and talking about his sexuality was considered taboo. Flash forward nearly 25 years and the landscape has seen a major shift as an increasing number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer athletes have come out publicly. Tewksbury is buoyed by the moves made to support LGBTQ athletes - particularly within the upper echelons of sport. He pointed to changes in the charters of both the Canadian and International Olympic Committees to include sexual orientation in non-discrimination policies as one of several signs of progress. “Sexual orientation has not been a topic that’s really been discussed thoroughly in the world of sports. It’s been a long overdue discussion,” Tewksbury said in an interview Thursday during a COC roundtable on LGBTQ inclusion in sports. “(It) helps build awareness, helps people be visible, represented, and really helps move the whole sports system forward.” Last December, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced a partnership with leading LGBTQ organizations aimed at protecting and supporting athletes, youth and coaches in sport and schools, part of a plan to encourage a broader conversation around gay rights issues. During a morning panel Thursday, U.S. diving great Greg Louganis was lauded for his accomplishments in and out of the pool. But the four-time Olympic champion said he didn’t have a role model. “I always challenge young people... find the hero in yourself,” Louganis said in an interview. “We are our own heroes. That is kind of something that I’ve tried to live by.” Louganis said he never thought he’d see the day where an athlete on a team sport would publicly come out and has been encouraged by the progress made. But he’s also witnessed the challenges LGBTQ athletes still face. He spoke of his experience at the Russian Open Games in Moscow last year following the Sochi Olympics at a time when the country’s anti-gay laws were the focus of widespread international attention. Louganis said the Open Games faced bomb threats, and when authorities learned of a LGBTQ panel discussion at one venue, they were warned they’d be shut down. Despite the hardships, Louganis said he felt honoured to be on the ground to show solidarity with the LGBT sports federation. “By supporting them, it allows young people to see that kind of support so they don’t feel that alone and isolated when they’re being chastised and judged by their own governments,” he said. Wade Davis came out publicly in 2012 - eight years after leaving the NFL. He played with Tennessee, Seattle and Washington during his pro stint from 2000 to 2004. “I think the biggest fear that I had was that no one who was in my circle of close friends - whether it be high school, college or football - would look at me the same way, that they would absolutely think that I was different, that I was less than,” recalled Davis, executive director of the You Can Play Project, an advocacy group working for equality for LGBT athletes in sports. “Most of my teammates said: ‘What did I do to make you think that I wouldn’t love you?’ And I really learned that a lot of the fears that I had (were) really going on in my own head. And when I finally invited the world in, my life has just gotten so much better.”

Anderson happy to star for Sens again Lisa Wall ace Canadian Press

Hammond took the Senators on a 20-1-2 run to make the post-season. Anderson was then forced to watch coach Dave Cameron go with his hot goaltender and start Hammond for the first two games of the series in Montreal. It wasn’t the most popular decision considering Anderson had only played four games since January and had posted a 1-2-1 record. The Senators lost Game 3, but Anderson was

OTTAWA - Forced to take a back seat during the Ottawa Senators’ remarkable run to the playoffs, goaltender Craig Anderson is happy to be back starring. The veteran netminder posted his third career playoff shutout Wednesday as Ottawa defeated Montreal 1-0 and forced a fifth game in their first-round series with the Canadiens. Anderson was sidelined due to a deep bone bruise suffered Jan. 21 and was relegated to the backup role as Andrew

the way Hammond was playing he couldn’t argue with the decision. “If I go out there and pout and complain that doesn’t do myself any good or the team,” Anderson said. “This is a team game, you need everyone on the same page, everyone playing well. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing every game or every other game or once a week or once a month, you’re still part of the team and you have to find a way to push yourself to be ready when called upon.” The 33-year-old Anderson said he’s energized by the playoffs and feels “25 years old again.” His success comes as no

solid and no one is criticizing his performance in Game 4. “I thought I was fighting it a little bit in the first period of Game 3 and fortunately it didn’t hurt us at all and they didn’t score on any of those mishaps that I had,” Anderson said. “As the game wore on I felt more comfortable. There’s a lot of positives to pull out even though we lost that game. I think we used some of that good feeling for Game 4.” Anderson said losing his job to Hammond wasn’t the easiest time of his career, but with

surprise to teammates. “I think he was hungry, I mean he was starving to get a chance again,” said Clarke MacArthur. “In the past he’s had good playoff runs and good numbers so I’m not surprised. He played great for us all year and for him to come in and do what he’s done is what you expect of him and the only chance you have to compete really.” Friday’s Game 5 is back at Montreal’s Bell Centre, where Anderson has had notable success. He was instrumental in the Sens’ 4-1 defeat of the Habs in the first round for the 2012-13 playoffs. He won two games at the Bell Centre.

Janus: Warriors of the Squared Circle Continued from page 7

It was 1907 before wrestling appears to have occurred again in the city. Jimmy Ramsey, champion of Manitoba and W. Addison, champion of Minnesota, (there are more champions in wrestling, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy) fought it out to a draw. There was a large crowd in attendance and a $200 purse at stake; a notable sum. It worked out nicely all the way around. Wrestling was lucrative. Local audiences were becoming more hip to the wrestling scene by 1909, when Harry Buckle, alleged champ of Saskatchewan and Alberta, sparred with M. Matsuda, oddly, champ of nothing in particular, in what the local paper called “one of the worst fakes ever pulled in Cranbrook. The big man from the prairie was evidently a four-flusher [fake] and those who assembled were disgusted in the extreme. It is time this kind of business was cut out in Cranbrook.” It appears it was. Wrestling seems to have all but disappeared until February, 1925, when George Anton, local entrepreneur and owner of the Victoria Cafe, began promoting a series of matches. The first event

took place at the Knights of Pythias Hall when Jack Sampson, middleweight champion of the U.S. Marine Service took on Nick Bozinis, middleweight champion of Canada and the Eastern States. It was advertised as a “clean, fast show” – which is the nice thing about wrestling, the show can be accurately described before it happens. Admission was $1.00, plus a ten percent war tax – which is the nice thing about war taxes, they can continue long after the war is over. It went over well and the following month Mr. Anton brought in Nelson Moe of Yorkton, Sask., the light-heavyweight champion of Sweden and Norway, to battle Jack Milo, the light-heavyweight champion of everywhere, apparently. This time it was held at the old auditorium on 10th Avenue. Billed as “The Show of the Season,” ringside tickets were now $1.50 (plus tax). A fair-sized crowd watched Moe eventually end the match by picking up Milo, spinning him around three or four times, throwing him flat on his back and then falling on him, a familiar move even by 1925. Bozinis challenged Moe to a match the following week. It led to victory for Bozinis following which he was carried aloft on the

shoulders of his supporters amidst much cheering and jubilation. He immediately became a town favourite, more so the following week, when he won, according to out-of-town reports, the title of Canadian middle-weight champ in Spokane. Why the Canadian championship was held in the United States is anybody’s guess. Not really a problem anyway as, according to Bozinis, he was the Canadian champ before he won the Canadian championship. Sadly, for wrestling fans, Mr. Anton retired from the promotion business soon afterward, which pretty much ended wrestling in Cranbrook until the 1950s, but that is a story for another day. George Anton continued to run the café, regaining the limelight briefly in 1926, when he served Cranbrook Ed, the rogue elephant, his final meal outside of the Victoria Café (next to the Cosmopolitan Hotel) before Ed lumbered into a boxcar and rode into the sunset. Cranbrook Ed was executed by firing squad after killing his trainer a few years later. George Anton closed the café in 1932 and faded from view. Wrestling continued to live and is lucrative.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband died 11 years ago. Our son, “Marcus,” was 6 at the time. His dad was in intensive care for two months, and because of his young age, our son was not allowed to see his father. Before he died, my husband asked his younger brother to keep his drum set until Marcus turned 18. Marcus’ uncles used to call him every year on his birthday, which also is his father’s birthday. But since my husband died, neither has called to wish their nephew a happy birthday. Marcus will be 18 soon. He is into music and wants the drums. I have asked his uncle on several occasions by sending a message on Facebook. I also asked my son’s half-brother (from my husband’s first marriage) to get the drums, and Marcus would pick them up from his house. Nothing has happened. I recently noticed a picture on Facebook of a guy who used to play in a band with my late husband. In the photo, he is playing drums that look suspiciously like the ones that belong to my son. Marcus has nothing of his father’s. He was not included in any decisions on what to sell or what to keep, or even asked what he’d like to have. He was also given his dad’s El Camino, but my husband put the title in the name of Marcus’ half-brother, who sold it. He didn’t even give my son any of the money from the sale. That was bad enough, but Marcus only really cares about the drums. The entire family knows that my late husband wanted Marcus to have the drums. What should I do? File a lawsuit? How do I honor my late husband’s wishes and give my son this final gift from his dad? -- Distraught Mom of a Musician Dear Mom: Is anything in writing? If not, you might need to file a lawsuit, but in order to prove your case, you probably will need other credible witnesses to testify that your husband’s wish was for Marcus to have the drum set. An attorney will let you know if you have a case. But a lawsuit should be a last resort. Please stop asking for personal things on Facebook. Pick up the phone. Call the uncle who supposedly has the drum set. Be nice. Tell him what a wonderful birthday present it would be for Marcus to finally have this memento from his father. Ask when would be convenient to pick it up and what you can do to facilitate the transfer. Marcus also can call his uncle. These relationships work both ways, and Marcus is old enough now to establish his own contact. And if he is close to his half-brother or another paternal relative, perhaps you or Marcus could get the relative to intercede on his behalf. Dear Annie: “Holding My Breath” said she can’t kiss her husband because of his halitosis. I had bad breath for 10 years. I brushed, used mouthwash and saw the dentist regularly. I also had frequent problems with my digestive tract. Finally, after having an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, my gallbladder was found to be functioning at 17 percent. It was removed, and my bad breath and constant low-level nausea went away immediately. -- Alabama Maggie Dear Maggie: Thanks for writing. Readers, please don’t assume these things are unimportant. They can indicate serious medical problems. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. In the early morning hours of Monday, April 20, 2015, Edna Elizabeth Ballard passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 93 years. Edna was born on September 8, 1921 in Wardner, BC, the youngest of four children born to Gustav and Elfrida Edna was the last surviving child of her

Edna was our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In her life she had a great love for the outdoors and spent many trips camping, fishing and just relaxing in the outdoors. She was also a knitter and crocheter. She had a pattern in her mind for a very unique hat. Mom did the craft until her hands would not allow her to anymore. Edna leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Joanne (Lou) Marchi and son Robin (Lynn) Ballard. Also left are her grandchildren; Laurel (Bruce) Marchi-Cole, Colin Marchi, Florence Ballard, Janna (Eddie) DeWitte, Keith (Ivy) Ballard, and Christine (Jason) Fischer and her great grandchildren; Cassidy Marchi, Elena Marchi-Cole, Nole Dewitte, Owen DeWitte, Merek Dewitte, Farrah Fischer and Paige Fischer. Edna was predeceased by the love of her life, Lawrence; two sons Randy and Murray, her granddaughter, Cherie Ballard, her daughter-in-law Donna and her husband Leo Bozzer.

Jumbo construction in hazard zones not unusual, project planner says that these slabs on grade, without foundations, were a last minute attempt by developers to show that ‘something’ had been done — a far cry from a substantial start … It’s time for the province to act in line with its own legislation

and cancel the Environmental Assessment Certificate,” said Bergenske. However, Jumbo project planner Tom Oberti said that the report has revealed nothing unusual for those in the industry. “In a nutshell, there’s nothing new in terms of surprising information from the report and they’re playing fast and loose with the avalanche zone description,” said Oberti. “New mapping shows the day lodge is not in a red zone, it’s in a blue zone, which is the zone closest to the red zone. What this means is that you have to have an evacuation plan like when you do avalanche control and the building has to be closed to the public. They’re making a big deal about something that is not unusual and not unexpected.” Oberti added that there are plenty of day lodges that are constructed in red zones, such as Sunshine Resort in Banff. Unlike the day lodge, the service building — which was meant to house generators — is partially in a red zone. Due to this, the service building will be converted for storage and will store summer lifts while winter ones are in use. “Functionally, there is no change except moving generators. The mapping is very close to what the mapping in the ‘90s showed and there are no real surprises show other than the new classifications which are a new way of mitigating risk that wasn’t in place in the ‘90s,” said Oberti. Bergenske has stated that the “last minute attempt” on Jumbo’s part to demonstrate that work has substantially started as well as the avalanche risk should nullify their chances for certificate renewal. “Given the serious concerns about building placement, compliance issues and the risk to public safety, this should be the final chapter in the story of this ill-fated real estate scheme,” said Bergenske. Oberti however stated he is “confident” that that completed construction will substantiate a certificate renewal. Oberti said that should the decision come within the next few weeks, construction will resume this summer. Otherwise, building may not pick up until next year.
