Linda Ruan: winner of the Registered Music Teachers’ Annual Piano Competition

Praised for “a great passion and poise” in her performance, seventeen-year-old Linda Ruan has participated in many local and international music festivals and piano competitions where she has received numerous scholarships and awards. Some of the most recent achievements include being one of the two Canadian pianists to advance to the live rounds of the 2013 International e-Piano Junior Competition; she was again invited to participate in 2015 edition of the competition. In the summer of 2012 and 2014, she was one of the few young pianists across Canada to be accepted into the internationally-renowned “Morningside Music Bridge” program. She has given performances and recitals at various venues from the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Brechemin Auditorium at the University of Washington to the the Koerner Recital Hall at the Vancouver Academy of Music and the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. The U19 Film Festival is gearing up for its big premiere this weekend in Rossland. For the eighth year in a row, young movie makers from New Denver, to Nelson, to Trail have been working since February on their entries and the time is here for original and creative short films to hit the big screen. Tara Kowalchuk is the executive administrator with the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC) and says that now the hardest part, making the films, is over, everyone is invited to come to the Rossland Miner’s Hall this weekend and check out the finished product. “The community always has a wonderful time watching the youth showcase their films at the festival,” she said. “We hope to provide an environment where youth feel safe sharing their films with the public, and to inspire new youth to try filmmaking.” This year, the theme of the festival is “Favourite Movies” and all movie-goers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite film character to add to the fun atmosphere. Along with a fun night out at the movies, Kowalchuk says the festival is about enhancing a film-

maker’s personal experience. “The festival is about participation and learning and experiencing a new art form,” said Kowalchuk, adding that it also gives youth a chance to meet likeminded peers. “It is good for them to meet others interested in the same things. It gives them an opportunity to meet more people they can collaborate with and it offers an opportunity for youth to showcase their work to a broader audience than they would normally get.” A committee of young film makers also have a hand in organizing the festival; selecting the judges, emceeing the event, advertising, introducing their own films and more. “It is great to have the youth involved with the planning of this event,” said Kowalchuk. “They really take the event and make it their own. we hope that the youth committee will gain valuable skills in teamwork, event planning, budgeting, time management, and working with the community.” The entry deadline has come and gone, with films being entered in six different categories: non-fiction/ documentary, comedy, sports, quick and dirty (under 19 seconds), action/adventure or drama. Film makers are throwing their name in the hat

to win cash prizes and the coveted Olaus Awards, an Academy Award-like statue in the form of skiing great Olaus Jeldness. Leading up to the festival, the RCAC has put on workshops to help the moviemakers deliver their best work, including a full day with a Hollywood stuntman, creating safe but exhilarating stunt reels, and another teaching youth how to take raw shots and turn it into a completed project through post-production techniques. The festival starts on May 1 at 6 p.m. at Rossland Miner’s Hall on Columbia Ave. Tickets are only $5.

The Trail Market on the Esplanade is slated to return for another season beginning June 5 and continuing every second Friday until October 9. Trail Times file photo Liz Bevan West Kootenay Advertiser

After the success last summer, the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce has its sights set on offering even more at this year’s editions of the Market on the Esplanade. Norm Casler, executive director of chamber, says now that dates have been marked down on the calendar, arrangements for the popular market can get going. “We can begin making plans to continue to grow, showcase our beautiful city and esplanade and bring hundreds of extra people into the downtown core,” he said. The market has been slated for a June 5 start date, and will run every other Friday until Oct. 9. Along with the usual Friday afternoon schedule, Casler says the chamber, working with the city and downtown businesses,

have expanded on last year’s evening market success. “This year, we have decided to add two evening markets this year,” he said, adding that they are currently scheduled for July 15 and August 19. “This will become much more of an event with plenty of additional vendors, participants and things to do and see for all ages. We will also be presenting the special Saturday edition of the market in conjunction with the Halloween Spooktacular on Oct. 31.” To go with the vendors selling goods at the market, Casler wants downtown businesses to capitalize on the fun and the extra people passing by their stores. “We continue to encourage the businesses to get involved on market days with specials, sidewalk sales, hand-out flyers and coupons,” he said, adding that the chamber is always open to input. “(Businesses can) set up a satellite store at the market. We have been working with downtown businesses and will

continue to work with them throughout the summer to consider any and all opportunities that will ensure the market offers the best possible advantage for them as well. Watch for a few surveys to be circulated.” There are also a couple of extra incentives for business owners and locals to sign up for a table at the Market on the Esplanade, explained Casler. “Chamber members will receive an additional 10 per cent discount (on a table),” he said, adding that vendors who sign up for ten markets will get one for free. “We feel that there is a fine balance between too may vendors and just the right number of vendors. We averaged close to 50 vendors per market last year. We also strive to make sure we have a good balance of different types of vendors.” There are vendors are already signing up to get in on the market, says Casler, adding that who wants to get a table for their business or homemade goods, can call the chamber at 250-368-3144.

Chemical leaks plugged Nelson’s fire department was called out twice in as many days last week to deal with unrelated chemical leaks. First, they responded to a call at 823 Vernon St. after the co-owner discovered nitric acid on the premises. Firefighters cordoned the street off, donned hazmat suits, and removed a number of unlabelled containers with clear fluids inside. Three people were taken to hospital

after being exposed to noxious fumes. Police believe the former tenants were using the acid to remove the coating off ordinary copper wire in the home’s electrical system for resale. In the second incident, an ammonia spill at the Nelson and District Community Complex saw an employee sent to hospital to be treated for minor burns.

An unknown amount of ammonia leaked near the building’s air intake and the fumes spread inside. The building, which was occupied by recreational hockey players finishing up a game and some staff, was evacuated. Firefighters again neutralized the material and disposed of it. The Regional District of Nelson firefighters responded to 823 Central Kootenay, which runs Vernon St. last week after a nitric the facility, is investigating. acid leak. Submitted photo

Shooting some hoops There was a lot of basketball action Thursday evening at GFSS as the Boundary Basketball Development League players battled. The league goes twice a week for 7.5 weeks and features 40 players from grades 4-7. The players work on skills each Tuesday and scrimmage on Thursdays. The league is made up of boys and girls from Grand Forks and Christina Lake. Organizer Scott Stewart said the league is developing players skills and giving them a head start for when they get to high school. Helping Stewart coach are some players from the high school as well as community coaches. Photo by Craig Lindsay

Atamanenko undeterred on horse meat issue Nicholas wethal West Kootenay Advertiser

NDP MP Alex Atamanenko says he’s disappointed his private member’s bill over horse meat for human consumption failed to pass in parliament but he hopes it leaves a lasting influence on the food industry and general public. The bill would have imposed certain limits on the horse slaughter industry. Horses are injected with a variety of drugs which are prohibited for human digestion. Last year the Conservative party voted against the bill, which failed to pass. The Lib-

Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko in hopeful we haven’t heard the last of his private member’s bill over horse meat for human consumption. Tamara Hynd photo

erals and most of Atamanenko’s party voted for the bill. Atamanenko, who speaks passionately about his bill, told the Advertiser he believes industry pressure prevented it from passing. “This type of pressure from industry is what I have been battling over the years. The same thing happened when I introduced my bill on genetically modified foods and organisms,” he said. Although the bill did not pass, it did receive positive support from members of his party. After a bit of rewording, he hopes the bill of similar stature will be reintroduced by someone in the NDP.

SPRING

“The support is there, the groundswell of all the people who have come behind the bill, the petitions, the folks in the horse defence coalition, and others have tremendous support for this bill.” Because private member bills are essentially ideas, the government could take this bill and introduce their own. Atamanenko said he and his party hope the government will advance this issue. Atamanenko said he’s not distressed but is optimistic his bill, though it did not pass, will open the minds of the populace. Food quality is important and people should know what they are eating, he said.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award For young people looking for a great experience to strengthen their leadership skills in a fun environment, Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is accepting applications. The intensive one-week leadership training program is for youth, both male and female, aged 18-25 and runs July 4-11 at Selkirk College in Castlegar. The program incorporates, through a number of excellent presenters, challenging small and large group work and interaction with approximately 50 other young adults. Topics include: awareness of self/others; group dynamics; dealing with conflict/ change; goal setting; styles of leadership; and many more. One of the senior organizers, Stacey Cassidy, attended RYLA as a youth in Grand Forks and was really influenced by her time there. Cassidy, who works as a

revenue development coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, is now heavily involved in the Castlegar Rotary Club and acts as district youth services chair. “I attended RYLA as a participant in 2007,” she said. “When people ask me to tell them about my experience the most accurate thing I can say is that it was indescribable and life changing. At RYLA I learned so many different skills that I find myself applying daily to my work, social and family life.” Cassidy said that RYLA is so much more than just a leadership seminar. “At RYLA we hear from phenomenal presenters, participate in hands-on breakout sessions, delve deeply into topics in small groups, get creative, ask questions and have fun,” she said. “We explore a wide variety of topics including ethics, communication, leadership, impromptu speaking

COOK / CHEF Scheduler FOR WEEKENDS CAREER OPPORTUNITIES!

CAREER OPPORTUNITY! Mountain Side Village Is Fruitvale’s Newest Seniors Housing, Care, & Services Community.

Margaret Beth Kraft (nee Perry) Margaret Beth Kraft (nee Perry) died peacefully at the age of 90 at Jubilee Manor in Nelson BC, on April 9, 2015. She was born August 27, 1924, at the family farm near Lewvan, Saskatchewan. She recalled her life on the farm with her parents and seven siblings as a very busy and happy time despite the challenges of the depression and years of drought. Mom enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps at the age of 18 and served her country ďŹ rst in Vermillion, Alberta, then Ottawa, and ďŹ nally Shilo, Manitoba. It was in Shilo that she met her soon-to-be husband, Dave Draft, a dashing young paratrooper who would occasionally jump out of airplanes in fright (sic). Dave remained in the army after the war and he and Beth raised their children Perry, Brenda, and Candace while enjoying postings in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta. When they retired, Beth and Dave spent a summer traveling through British Columbia searching for the ideal place to begin the next phase of their lives. They chose to settle in Creston, BC. It was surrounded by mountains which Dave loved but also had a wide open valley to remind Beth of the prairies. Dave got a job with the BC Forest Service and began a second career as a lookout man on the Thompson mountain and then later in the ďŹ eld of silviculture. Beth was always busy tending a large garden in the summer and taking care of their fruit trees. Camping with their children and grandchildren was always a favourite activity. Both Beth and Dave were delighted with their eight grandchildren: Dorian, Ryan, Tom, Katie, Johann, David, Luke and Adam. It was Beth’s dream to have a great-grandchild and she was ďŹ nally blessed with a great-grandson, Conrad, in 2012. Beth and Dave were married 59 years when Dad passed away in 2006 at the age of 84. May they rest in peace together as content as they lived in life. Our family would like to express out sincere thanks and appreciation to the sta and residents of Jubilee Manor where Mom spent her ďŹ nal years. Their care was exceptional in every way.
