Private care facility targets growing retirement sector BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

Family remembers ‘outgoing’ boy I INVESTIGATION INTO cause of fatal Albert Street fire continues. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
While investigators sift through the debris of a fire that killed a young boy on the weekend, his family is preparing to put him to rest and rebuild their lives. Dominik Ambrose David Billy, 7, of Nanaimo died in B.C. Children’s Hospital Sunday morning despite attempts by police, firefighters and paramedics to save his life after fire swept through the second-storey apartment where the family of eight lived above a thrift store in a nearly
100-year-old wooden building at 361 Albert St. Investigators from Nanaimo Fire Rescue and the B.C. Coroners Office were back on site Tuesday probing what sparked the fire. Shirley Antoine described her nephew as an outgoing, articulate boy who really loved professional wrestling. “John Cena was his favourite wrestler, so I’ve been out asking everybody if they can find a John Cena shirt for him,” Antoine said. The night before the fire Antoine recalled Billy wrestling with his cousin at a family get together for his grandfather’s birthday, tossing each other down and bouncing off a bed like it was a wrestling ring “They were having fun and all of us were just around them letting them
do whatever,” Antoine said. Billy attended Georgia Avenue Community School. Some of his artwork was brought to his family Monday, including a picture on which he’d written, ‘My peace is spending time at home with Mom and Dad.’ “He was special,” Antoine said. “He wanted to be a wrestler. We called him our Dominator. I said, ‘I’m going to call you the Dominator when you become a wrestler, Dom.’” People left teddy bears, small toys and votive candles at a vigil on Albert Street Monday night. Billy’s parents and five siblings grapple with his death and the loss of their home and belongings. One of Billy’s sisters asked Antoine if they could have a Christmas tree. See ‘DONATIONS’ /10
A new, private dementia care facility could break ground in north Nanaimo next year. Avenir Retirement, a company with memory care centres in the United States, plans to build an 83-bed, private-pay facility near Long Lake and Nanaimo North Town Centre for people with different stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Rooms are expected to cost residents between $4,500 to $5,900 a month at the new Nanaimo Memory Care, a four-storey facility with round-theclock care and different ‘neighbourhoods’ of people with similar cognitive abilities and stages of disease. According to Jason We need a Craik, a partner with Avenir, the model is balance of already used in Arizona where the comfunded and pany has multiple private-pay facilities, but this is first time they facilities that the will bring it to CanOther locations specialize in ada. in the country have also been earmarked dementia. as the company plans an expansion in the United States and north of the border with dementia becoming more of an issue for North Americans. “Certainly we need a balance of funded and private-pay facilities that specialize in dementia,” Craik said. “It’s becoming an epidemic here throughout North America so we are excited to bring our model to Nanaimo and believe it’s going to serve a great purpose in helping change families’ lives with their loved ones.” Craik said Nanaimo is a destination location for retirees and seniors, with a large senior population.

Volunteer draws on classic Dickens tale
I
hElp NEEDED to fill kettle ringing positions. By Karl yu The News bulleTiN
C
harles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has long been associated with the holiday season, something John Garenkooper takes full advantage of as he volunteers for the Christmas Kettle campaign. Garenkooper has been associated with the Nanaimo Salvation Army’s Christmas fundraiser for 10 years, but rather than merely standing and ringing a bell, hoping to elicit loonies or dollar bills for his kettle, he dresses up in full Dickensian getup, adding to the experience. Garenkooper was in musical theatre, collecting costumes along the way, and drew inspiration from that. The theme of Dickens’ classic is giving to the less fortunate after all, he said. “I thought I would dress up in that era costume at the Salvation Army kettle,” Garenkooper said. “It would make people think and stop. So I started doing that and from that

looks the part, he also goes into character, like a man in the time of Ebenezer Scrooge. Some appreciate the effort he puts in and at times it has led to $5, $10 or even $20 dona-
tions. Sometimes he even pretends to be a mannequin, only to surprise some unwitting child who happens to be taking a closer look. “It’s very satisfying. It’s almost like celebrating the event and when I’m finished, it takes me a little while to unwind because I really catch it. I’m really into the character and people communicate that way,” said Garenkooper. While people like Garenkooper are donating their time to the campaign, there is also a massive shortage of volunteers, according to Dawne Anderson, Nanaimo Salvation Army fundraising and promotions coordinator. The campaign goes until Christmas Eve. “The shifts are only two-and-a-half to three hours long,” Anderson said. “They are Monday through Saturday, in 27 locations from Ladysmith to North Nanaimo, inside and outside locations. All the money we raise in Nanaimo stays in Nanaimo.” For more information, please call the Nanaimo Salvation Army at 250-7401004, Anderson at 250-7166595 or visit www.salvationarmynanaimo.com. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
Cold weather pushes shelter use to capacity By Chris Bush The News bulleTiN
Cold weather shelters are packed to capacity and numbers of people seeking shelter are up over previous years. The Salvation Army’s New Hope Centre at 19 Nicol St. has 24 beds and takes overflow from other shelters, such as the First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo Extreme Weather Shelter when it gets full. “We have six additional mats that we can put down and we are seeing one or two people come in at night for the overflow as well,” said Jenna Brett, Salvation Army shelter manager. Kevan Griffith, coordi-
nator for the First Unitarian shelter, located on the corner of Millstone Avenue and Townsite Road, said its beds have been filled since the cold weather started. The shelter takes a maximum of 25 people and, like the Salvation Army, offers laundry facilities and hot meals. “Last year in November we were running an average of about 16 [beds full] and this year we’re running an average of about 19,” Griffith said. Higher numbers could be because it’s easier for people to find them. This year the extreme cold weather shelter received some operating money from the Regional District of
Nanaimo, which now puts up posters and distributes brochures listing locations and services for emergency shelters, food banks and soup kitchens. Violet Hayes, Island Crisis Care Society executive director, which operates Samaritan House emergency shelter for women, said the 12-bed shelter has been at capacity for months. “So that we’re not turning women out into the streets, we send them over to [extreme weather shelter], but some aren’t willing to go there because there are men there as well, so then we just put mats down in the dining room so that they have a safe place,”

Hayes said. Cpl. Dave LaBerge, head of the Nanaimo RCMP Bike Patrol Unit, said his team has seen a higher street population throughout 2014. “I don’t think we have any spare beds,” LaBerge said. “A lot of the folks like to go to the extreme weather shelter. They’ll always put a plate of food out for you, even if you show up at 11 o’clock at night, you can drag your shopping cart in there and park it in the corner.” The extreme weather shelter needs donations of socks, long johns, sweat pants and pyjamas. McKay sets priorities during first meeting as Nanaimo mayor By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN
Nanaimo’s mayor invited councillors to join an effort to set a new course and achieve new goals, after he pledged action on the Colliery dams, the city’s permit process and a programs and services review. Former city councillor Bill McKay became Nanaimo’s 25th mayor during the inaugural meeting and swearing-in ceremony at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre Monday. McKay and eight newly elected council members were led by bagpipe into a ballroom with more than 200 people who watched as councillors were sworn in, the mayor made his inaugural speech and outgoing politicians were given gifts. City representatives were also announced for the Regional District of Nanaimo and Vancouver Island Regional Library boards. Outgoing mayor John Ruttan handed McKay the chain of office during the event and thanked the people of Nanaimo and the councillors he served with, calling his time as mayor a great honour and privilege. In his inaugural speech, McKay said he would be asking his new council to adopt his campaign agenda and that they’ve already signaled a readiness to get started on several initiatives. “To begin with, we will resolve the issues surrounding the Colliery dams quickly and conclusively,” he said to applause. “We’ll find answers to questions surrounding the Vancouver Island Conference Centre; we will establish terms of reference for a program and services review; we will streamline and speed up the permitting and development process, review the need and effectiveness of the city’s committees … and ensure we create a sustainable plan for the delivery of city services.” McKay said citizens will guide and drive decision making over the next four years. Coun. Diane Brennan said she’s looking forward to getting to work, but has not agreed to McKay’s promised action. While she said she’s eager to see what the mayor is proposing, nothing has been laid out to her and discussions have to be held in public. First-time Coun. Ian Thorpe also said there hasn’t been discussion about what exactly the mayor has in mind, but that any way the business of the city can be done more efficiently is worth considering. In a post-event interview, McKay said in order to move onto new initiatives, council will have to deal with things that have been left dangling. “We’ve got work to do,” he said. McKay and councillors Jim Kipp, Bill Bestwick, Wendy Pratt, Bill Yoachim, Ian Thorpe and Jerry Hong will sit on the regional board, with Gord Fuller and Brennan acting as rotating alternates. Brennan will get the primary seat on the library board with Pratt acting as her alternate. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Trustees ask for plan to enhance music programs By Karl yu the News BulletiN
The Nanaimo school board has requested staff develop an enhanced program for music in elementary schools. Trustees approved the busi-
ness committee recommendation at their Nov. 26 board meeting and it could include new construction or alterations at schools, subject to money being available. The setup of music programs at primary schools had been discussed at several teachertrustee liaison committee meetings, said Jamie Brennan, trustee and business committee chairman. He said the physical layout of

music programs varies. Some schools offer them in multipurpose rooms, while others in classrooms or portables. “There are a couple of issues. One is the programs themselves. The board would like to see music programs enhanced. We used to have elementary band in most of our schools and now it’s kind of here and there. Also, we’d like to make sure that the physical plans, the facilities, are capable of housing a music
program and dealing with the increase in noise generated. “So that may require some new build, it may require some renovations and some sort of alteration of the schools and some of the rooms. So we’ve given [staff] five years in which to bring that up to speed,” said Brennan. While work will be dependent on funding, Brennan said there is money in the school district’s capital fund to accommodate
any alterations. He said the board of trustees will check in with staff periodically to see how the initiative is progressing. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Input will be sought related to specific pricing options and what customers would like to see in the systems going forward, but there won’t be public consultation, Corrigan said. The first phase of the plan could roll out in 2017 and will include a pilot project on a couple of routes across the system, testing the technology as well as the pricing engines and models. Corrigan said it’s likely the first pilot will take place on a Nanaimo route. He said Macatee has 60 days to make a decision.

B.C. Ferries is looking to revamp its booking system and website. The company announced Wednesday that it has submitted an application to B.C. Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee for a proposal that includes fare flexibility and online components. The initiative could lead to shorter wait times and discounted fares at non-peak times, according to a company spokesman. Mike Corrigan, B.C. Ferries’ president and CEO, said the fare flexibility is a new way to price rates for the company. “It basically takes into consideration the fact that in the airline industry and the hotel business and other places, there’s models in place
now so the price you pay is dependent upon how far you book in advance, what restrictions you’re willing to put on yourself and when you want to travel or stay,” said Corrigan. Another part of the proposal includes a new website and e-commerce platform, so customers can pay online via mobile device or computer and can book vacation packages. B.C. Ferries’ point-ofsale reservation systems are 25 years old and they need to be replaced, Corrigan said. He said it hasn’t been yet determined how the proposal will affect fares. “Over the next couple of years – hopefully we get the commissioner’s approval – then we have to go out and pick a vendor we want to work with both for the fare side and the digital/ecommerce side,” said Corrigan. “And at the same time, we want to start building the actual models and we need to work with customers to determine what are the

Diverse leaders benefit Nanaimo We consider Nanaimo a tolerant, accepting community, so when we discovered that Bill Yoachim is likely the first person of aboriginal descent to be elected to city council, we were surprised, to say the least. We were also surprised that less than a generation ago, aboriginal people were not welcome on Commercial Street or on the main decks of the ferry from downtown Nanaimo to Vancouver. It makes Yoachim’s win in last month’s municipal election, as well as that of Natasha Bob for Nanaimo school trustee, all the more historic. Nanaimo’s relationship with its indigenous population has been a rocky one at best. Snuneymuxw No. 1 Reserve is located within Nanaimo’s municipal boundaries, but the two governments might as well be on different islands. Snuneymuxw continually complains that Nanaimo fails to consult with the First Nation on issues that affect them, from the closure of schools in Cedar to the removal of the Colliery dams. Increasingly, First Nations across Canada have turned to the courts to have their voices heard. In the last decade, that relationship has started to change. Municipal water was finally connected to the downtown reserve in 2012. The reconciliation agreement signed between Snuneymuxw and the provincial government in 2013 granted the First Nation 877 hectares of land on Mount Benson, $50,000 to kickstart economic development and a two-year extension to manage Newcastle Island – all of which hold partnership potential for the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo. Aboriginal people in Canada still face discrimination daily. But hopefully, with advocates like Yoachim and Bob at the table, First Nations’ issues will be addressed early in the discussions, rather than during the litigation process. The coming years are an opportunity for new kinds of leadership to emerge, to help create unity from our diversity. After that it received the required two-thirds majority support. Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He seemed genuinely surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of generations of labour. “You’ve got to have big dreams,” Gosnell said. “Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. Culture has role in city’s economy
To the Editor,
Re: Airport targets federal money for expansion, Nov. 27. Some background that taxpayers should be aware of before being asked to join Nanaimo Airport Commission president and CEO Mike Hooper in his joy at the prospect of the Nanaimo Regional Airport, once more, having a letter of support from the local government in an application for public infrastructure funding. The Area A official community plan of 1998 explicitly identified the airport as being situated on land not zoned for airport use. While previously received federal and provincial moneys (in excess of $20 million dollars) have been used to expand the airport, there have been no zoning changes to the property that might allow for those physical expansions to the airport’s infrastructure. Thus, despite how much certain entities might wish to see the Nanaimo Regional Airport expanded into a bigger and more capable facility, shouldn’t taxpayers be able to insist that all of the several levels of government involved impose a due respect for statutory prerequisites? Lest the law be drawn into disrepute by the perceived arbitrariness attached to this particular, local enterprise?

Former Nanaimo mayor John Ruttan, left, and former city councillor George Anderson were two of the dignitaries on hand for the opening of a new bike lane in Harewood last month.
Cyclists need co-operation, not just painted bike lanes Re: Life in the bike lane, Nov. 27. I was one of the cyclists who participated with the City of Nanaimo in the opening ceremony of a bike lane on Bruce Avenue. As part of a worldwide pattern, Nanaimo is encouraging its citizens to leave their cars at home more often. Part of the strategy is to encourage people who are risk averse to walk or cycle by building better infrastructure. It has been shown in other cities that as the numbers of cyclists on the road increases motorists become more cautious and aware. Everybody

Re: Re-development plans proposed for former city hall annex, Nov. 20. Most of us adult cyclists also drive a car. We are not out there deliberately trying to delay other road users. I urge motorists when faced with the need to overtake cyclists to pause a little and consider how to do it in a considerate manner. It rarely takes much extra time. Re: Culture can thrive without tax dollars, Letters, Dec. 2. The letter writer argues against the funding of culture through taxation, saying that artists will find ways of expressing themselves regardless of whether they are subsidized. It is true that artists could make a living by, for example, busking on street corners, but this would not be a good model to follow. The 2013 Nanaimo Arts and Culture Economic Impact Study shows the economic impact of the arts in the Nanaimo region,
saying, “The total direct (not including indirect) gross output attributed to the arts and culture sector in Nanaimo is estimated at $9.4 million in 2012. This is equivalent to $5.5 million worth of contributions to the provincial GDP, 880 jobs created, and $7 million in tax revenue to all levels of governments.” If, as the letter writer says, “we are smart about money” we can “create the conditions where our arts and culture will grow” by making shrewd investments of taxpayer dollars.

Dementia care expected to increase on Island From /1

pates we’ll see more dementia care and facilities. The lodge is in the process of replacing its Nelson Road building with a larger publicly funded centre. Eden Gardens, a 130-bed facility, will have 40 additional beds over its former lodge. Nevertheless, Coutu says they should be building a second building already, “or someone else should be, especially in governmentfunded health care,” adding there’s likely
a market for four or five facilities. The Alzheimer Society did not have statistics for Nanaimo but reported 747,000 Canadians currently live with the disease and that number will nearly double to 1.4 million in less than two decades. The new privatepay facility has a development permit and expects to begin construction at the end of March. It anticipates 50 to 60 new full-time jobs will be created.
“The kids are having a really hard time adjusting,” said Charlene Nelson, one of Billy’s aunts who stopped by the scene Tuesday. “They keep asking where their brother is. We keep letting them know he’s not coming home. He didn’t wake up and he’s gone. They’re going to put him in a better place now.” The family received temporary shelter through the city’s Community Assistance Program but now needs a new home, clothing, furniture and other necessities. Nanaimo Native Victory Chapel at 471 Irwin St. is accepting donations on the fam-
ily’s behalf. “We’ve made the church available to the family to use as a clearing house – just as much as we can help them,” said Per Knudsen, Nanaimo Native Victory Chapel pastor. Financial donations can also be made to the family by visiting the Go Fund Me website at www.gofundme.com/ i1qd7k. Billy’s funeral will be held at the longhouse kitchen, located on Longhouse Road, Snuneymuxw No. 4 Reserve in Cedar Thursday (Dec. 4) at 11 a.m. The ceremony is open to everyone who wishes to attend. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Tips needed on robbery attempt A woman sustained minor injuries when a man tried to rob her as she walked home from a shopping errand Saturday. The 38-year-old woman was walking along a wooded path from the Windward Beer and Wine Store at 1588 Boundary Ave. to Seafield Crescent at about 8:45 p.m. when a man came up behind her, grabbed her pony tail and demanded she give him all her money. He then forced her to the ground, hit her on the head with a stick and kicked her several times. The suspect fled without managing to steal any of the woman’s belongings and was last seen running toward Seafield Crescent. Police searched the area and reviewed security camera footage from the beer and wine store, but weren’t able to find the suspect. The victim did not see her attacker’s face, but described him as about sixfeet tall and wearing a black or darkblue, puffy-style three-quarter length jacket and a dark hat with a white or yellow design on the back. She said he also had a very deep, masculine voice. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www. nanaimocrimestoppers.com.

Municipality supports cell tower proposal A proposed cellphone tower aims to improve coverage in Nanaimo’s Brannen Lake area. Nanaimo city council opted last month to provide a letter of agreement to Industry Canada for a 40-metre tower as part of an approval process. Rogers Communications Inc. is looking to build a cellphone tower
on Jordan Avenue near the Mostar industrial park, which it says will improve wireless service for the Brannen Lake neighbourhood and surrounding area. According to the company, it mailed out 15 notices to nearby residents about the proposed build and received one comment, to which it has since responded.
The Regional District of Nanaimo is eliciting input from electoral area residents and property owners with the aim of eliminating barriers and supporting agricultural activity. A survey is available at the regional district website and results could lead to amendments to related policies. Greg Keller, regional district senior planner, said 13 barriers to agriculture have been identified. He said a potential loss of larger parcels of land that have the greatest likelihood of having farm status and the most opportunity to support the broadest range of agricultural uses was one of the barriers. “So that’s really

about protecting our agricultural land base and ensuring that, in the future, we have a broad range of parcel sizes available for agriculture,” said Keller. The survey is open until Jan. 2 and Keller said results will be tabulated after that. “We’ll be meeting with our board, our electoral area directors and the agricultural advisory committee and we’ll be discussing the results and some potential for recommendations,” said Keller. He said the survey is only related to obstacles that are a result of regional district policies and regulation. The project was identified in the 2012 agriculture area plan, he said. Jason Parsons and Ash Buchholz were stocking beer at a golf course when they started chatting about music and made an instant connection. “We artistically hit it off right away because he respected my ambitions for trying to do something in entertainment and more specifically music,” Parsons told the News Bulletin. Buchholz and Parsons both came from musical backgrounds and had known about each other long before their first encounter back in the early 2000s. It wasn’t long after their initial meeting that the two Toronto-area residents teamed up and formed the alternative-electronicrock duo, Ubiquitous Synergy
Seeker, better known as USS. “We were both willing to put everything on the line to see if we could have a shot at travelling the world,” Parsons said. On Monday (Dec. 8) USS will be opening for Mother Mother at the Port Theatre. “We haven’t played in Nanaimo in quite some time, so it will be really good to get back. We’ve had some great experiences and memories over the years,” Parsons said. “We feel like when you’re on the Island you have to keep coming back.” The duo are fresh off their newest record, Advanced Basics, which they released in February. “We’ve pretty much come to think of it as a marriage between our three previous records and what we have been striving for, for years,

Over the years, USS has been involved with the Kids Help Phone organization. Starting in early 2015, the duo will launch a new T-shirt, with a portion of the sales going towards to the organization. “I can’t imagine if you’re 15 and your home life is destroyed and you don’t know who to talk to,” Parsons said. “A lot of those kids, they look to music for the hope that they can’t get out of their family life and Kids Help Phone is where they turn in a time of need.” USS perform at the Port Theatre on Monday (Dec. 8).

The song was written in a very short time frame, something that isn’t normal for USS. “It was one of the first songs that we really ever truly wrote on the spot,” Parsons said. “That’s something that, moving forward into our next record and next set of songs, we should probably try that again because we’ve never done anything like that before.” Since forming in 2004, USS has performed in countries around the world including Austria, France, Germany, India and Singapore. Their roots may be firmly planted on Gabriola Island, but New Society Publishers’ seeds were sowed on the streets of Philadelphia. On Saturday (Dec. 6) co-owners Chris and Judith Plant will tell the story of New Society Publishers in a presentation called Gathering the Threads of Social Change at the Phoenix Auditorium at the Haven on Gabriola Island. “I promise anybody who comes out a really good story,” Judith Plant said. New Society Publishers was originally formed back in 1971 as a Quaker-based organization called the Movement for New Society. “These folks organized to do the first non-violent civil disobedience training … in North America,” explained Plant. “They were standing up against the Vietnam War and they needed to know how
to do this in a safe and effective way. These were heavy times.” By the late 1970s, the movement, which had begun to organize non-violent opposition against other issues such as nuclear weapons programs, developed a mandate to publish books. The Movement for New Society had also began expanding around Philadelphia and the United States. “They first started creating pamphlets,” Plant said. “They would disperse them, like thousands at a time, to the people who needed the tools to do the work.” In 1990, a publishing organization called Catalyst Education Society was formed and operated on Gabriola Island with a similar mandate and concept as the Movement for New Society. In 1996, the Movement for New Society folded after decades
of successful community outreach. It was at this time that The Catalyst Education Society decided to acquire The Movement for New Society and their list of books and form The New Society Publishers. “The Philadelphia organization decided to lay their organization down. They had done almost 20 years of service to activist community and they were done, but we weren’t. We were just getting going,” Plant said. Since becoming New Society Publishers in the mid-1990s, the company, which had always preached the importance of environmental awareness, has become one of the leaders in environmental and social responsibly. In 2001, they decided to branch out from the pack and use acidfree paper for all of its upcoming book titles. “We were the first,” she said. “We had to do it. We had to walk our talk or we were going to get caught.” In 2005, the New Society Publishers were considered the first North American publisher to go car-

We were just getting going. bon neutral. “At the back of each book is an eco-audit, which tells the reader how many trees have been saved by using 100 per cent postconsumer paper, how much water has been saved and how much is going to the landfill.” Today, New Society Publishers is an award-winning company with a lengthy roster of authors from Canada and the United States, whose books have been distributed worldwide. Judith Plant speaks at the Phoenix Auditorium on Saturday (Dec. 6) at 7 p.m. The event is free and will include a book sale. Dancer comes home for Christmas
I
CHELSEA PRESTON will perform as part of Yellowpoint show. BY NICHOLAS PESCOD The News BulleTiN
For dancer Chelsea Preston, this Christmas will be a little different than usual. “This will be the first time in, I think about eight years, that I will be home for the whole month of December,” Preston told the News Bulletin. Preston, a former resident of Qualicum Beach, has returned home this month to prepare for her upcoming role as a dancer in the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular, which will kick off this weekend in Nanaimo at Cedar Community Hall. “I am super thankful to have the opportunity to perform so close to home. That’s really special to me,” she said. This year’s production has 14 professional musicians and dancers and will feature songs by popular artists such as the Bee Gees and Elton John. “I’ve never actually done a Christmas-themed show before. It’s a lot of fun and it is the best way to get into the Christmas spirit,” Preston said. Preston began dancing at the age of three and is a former Parksville Ballet School student. As a teenager, Preston moved to the Lower Mainland to attend the Richmond Academy of Dance. She said the decision to move was a critical step for her career. “This is what I needed to do to become a better dancer and performer,” Preston said. “It

just seemed so clear to me.” After graduating from MacEwan University for Theatre Arts, where she focused more on singing and acting, Preston spent two years living in London, England, and appeared in the Off West End production of One Touch of Venus. Although Preston moved to the U.K. for personal reasons, living in one of the world’s biggest cities helped her grow as a dancer. “It is a lot more competitive, which is really awesome because it pushes you in ways that a smaller pond doesn’t,” Preston said. “It was a good learning tool to be in such a
big pond and sort of struggling. I learned a lot of things about myself and about this job.” As as a dancer, singer and actor, Preston’s credits include Hairspray, Letters and Words, The Wedding Singer, Chicago, A Connecticut Yankee, Little Me and Grand Hotel. In 2011, Preston choreographed The Hoof and Mouth Advantage. The production earned a Sterling Award nomination for Outstanding Choreography in 2012. Preston explained that one of the more difficult things about being a dancer is learning the steps to each performance. “That’s a huge process,” she said. “The whole learning process is about muscle memory, but then you also have to go over it mentality. Sometimes you can rely on just your muscle memory, but a lot of times you have to go over everything in your head.” Costumes also play a huge role, as they can make things easier or tougher for a dancer. “I’ve had ridiculous hats,” she said. “In Spamalot, I had a hat that was a foot tall and it throws off your whole centre of gravity.” The Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular runs from Dec. 5 to Dec. 7 and from Dec. 12 to Dec. 14 at Cedar Community Hall, 2388 Cedar Rd. The show will then run from Dec. 19 until Dec. 21 at the Port Theatre. For a detailed list of show times, ticket prices and to purchase tickets, please visit bit.ly/11UQMdh. Singers support youth
I
ISLAND BEL CANTO singers will perform two shows this weekend.
For nearly two decades the Island Bel Canto Singers have been committed to supporting young singers in Nanaimo region. “That’s what we have made a tradition of doing ever since we started this choir,” said Island Bel Canto’s communication director Laurene Coleman. “It’s about giving an opportunity for upcoming young musicians in Nanaimo to perform in a supportive environment.”

Christmas signals changing tides for Tidesmen There will be plenty of Christmas spirit in Nanaimo’s north end tomorrow night. On Friday (Dec. 5), the Tidesmen will be holding their Christmas Harmony concert at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre. The concert will feature guest performances from the Nanaimo Youth Choir, Joëlle Rabu and the Heart of the Island Sweet Adelines. “It’s going to be a packed, but really fun two-hour show,” said Tidesmen vice-president, Jim Cameron. “There is going to be a singalong with the audience.” The Tidesmen are also expecting a special guest to appear at the concert. “There will be a special guest from the North Pole,” Cameron said. In previous years the Tidesmen have held a concert each November. However, this
That tradition will carry on this weekend when the choir holds its Christmas concert, Wintersong: Melodies of Christmas Then and Now at Brechin United Church on Saturday (Dec. 6) and Sunday at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre on Spartan Road. Both concerts will feature young harpists Hayley Farenholtz, Kaleigh Stroink and Ava Barakso. “We had one rehearsal with them and they basically just nailed it the first time we played with them,” Coleman said. year they decided to move their November concert to a later date and focus the Christmas concert. “This year we’ve expanded our Christmas show substantially,” Cameron said. “What we’ve done is shifted our normal November show at the Port Theatre to the Spring. It’s going to be in May next year. What that has done is allow us to have more time to really improve and finesse our Christmas show.” The Tidesmen and their guest acts perform Friday at 7 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre, 6234 Spartan Rd. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door. They can also purchased at Arbutus Music, 6324 Metral Dr. and at the Quilted Duck, 5299 Rutherford Rd. Choir raising money for local charity ISLAND EXPRESS BUS
The Christmas season is all about giving and the Malaspina Choir is doing its part. On Sunday (Dec. 7) the Malaspina Choir will be holding its singalong Messiah concert at St. Andrew’s United Church at 2:30 p.m. Joining the Malaspina Choir will be the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and guest performers Andrea Sicotte-Rodall, Erin Ronningen, David Brown and Steve Price. Proceeds from Sunday’s concert will be donated to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. “It’s nice to know that it [the proceeds] is going towards people who need it,” said soprano Sicotte-Rodall.
Messiah, which is an oratorio, was originally composed in under a month by George Frideric Handel in 1741. The concert piece was inspired by the works of Charles Jennens, who combined the Old and New Testament scriptures in an effort to convey the story of Jesus Christ. According to the Smithsonian Institution, Messiah was first performed at Musick Hall in Ireland in 1742. Tickets to the Malaspina Choir’s performance on Sunday (Dec. 7) at St. Andrew’s United Church, 311 Fitzwilliam St. are $20 for adults and $10 for students. Fundraiser intended to help women in Zimbabwe A Nanaimo entrepreneur is looking to make womanhood easier for those living in Africa with a new sanitary product. News Bulletin sales representative Erin Burden is using FundRazr to collect money she’ll use to distribute her new menstrual cup product – Lunacup – to women and girls living in Zimbabwe. The new product could also be stocked in Nanaimo stores if Burden gets Health Canada approval. Burden, who will travel to Africa this January, hopes to make things easier for girls and women who don’t have access to proper sanitary products. Fundraised dollars will cover the cost of the cups, which will be supplied to the Sandra Jones Centre in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The reusable Lunacup, an alternative to pads and tampons, collects menstrual flow and can last at least five years. For more information or to donate, please visit http:// goo.gl/exWXFa.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To Evelyn, our wonderful neighbour, for the donation of the computer monitor, kindergarten keyboard and speakers. Thank you from our students. BEEF To all you brainwashed and lowinformation climate change fear mongers: CO2 is not a greenhouse gas as you have been led to believe. It is natural, nonpoisonous and plants require it.
BEEF To a moving and storage company for not returning all of my belongings.
BEEF to the guy at the gym who goes around in bare feet. Since you feel so at home, why not just leave a toothbrush by the water fountain, too.
BOUQUET To Madame Nadia at Pauline Haarer Elementary School for helping her Grade 5 class review and debate mayoral candidates for the recent municipal election. Such great learning for these kids and she made it fun.
BOUQUET To the Remembrance Day section in the News Bulletin. The paper always does an excellent job remembering those who serve and sacrifice for us.
BEEF To all the gas station owners in Nanaimo who put prices higher than they should be and our government who warns them if they come to check.
BOUQUET To the voters at the recent civic election at Oliver Woods. Large numbers, polite, friendly and patient. Great for democracy. BEEF To humankind. Can’t we make anything that works anymore? It seems as if every other week there’s a recall of something that was meant to help us but turns out to be dangerous or even deadly. BOUQUET To responsible, rational dog owners who get that dog behaviour can be unpredictable and so they keep their dogs on leash in all our city parks. Another bouquet to those who use a halty or muzzle on their aggressive dogs. BEEF There are people who were born in this country and have lived here all their lives who don’t know In Flanders Fields or its significance. Is it no longer part of our heritage?
BEEF To the Canadian government that was one of three countries, along with the U.S. and Ukraine, to vote against a U.N. resolution against the “glorification of Nazism.” My grandfather fought in the Second World War and must be rolling in his grave.
BOUQUET To Tim Hortons for their Timbits soccer program. The youngsters must love their team shirts, too. BEEF To people on electric scooters with no red flags. Traffic needs to know where you are. BOUQUET To the employee who cleaned up a real mess of V8 juice (my wife dropped it) at the Great Canadian Superstore. She was quick and cheerful, and gave us another bottle for free.
BEEF To most Americans, their Thanksgiving is sacred and most businesses are closed for the day. Yet on Nov. 11, not only are most businesses open, it’s a reason for a big sale. BOUQUET To Barry and Carol Anderson for making a father and daughter’s experience at the Motley Crue concert memorable beyond description.

BOUQUET A shout out to ‘Anna’ for making so many children happy by volunteering for the Frozen event.
BEEF To the fire department concerning my worries about candles being placed outside on a property. If that caused a fire in your area, you would say differently.
BOUQUET To the Ladies Auxiliary Legion No. 257. They have generously contributed money to help provide nutritious snacks for the students of Park Avenue Elementary School. We send many thanks your way.
AFTER REBATE:
BOUQUET To all the guys who helped push a stalled vehicle from the Bowen Road and Island Highway intersection. It was nice to see so many guys help – great small city attitude.
BOUQUET To Jayson at Urban Style Salon in Harewood for always a great haircut and style. He’s truly a credit to his profession.

BOUQUET Thank you for leaving News Bulletin editions in the Living Forest Campground. I read the newspaper cover to cover, like to go through the sales flyers and do your puzzles.
BOUQUET To Darren, Clay, Brian, Shane and all the players involved for helping to save the life of teammate Kelly. Their quick action of CPR and the use of the defibrillator turned a tragic event into a miracle.
BEEF To the City of Nanaimo for plowing road snow onto the sidewalk and then expecting homeowners to make it disappear. If you fail in this magic trick you can be fined.
BOUQUET To Phyllis Birch who had a huge heart and sat with an injured deer at the side of the road and kept him warm and calm until the veterinarian at Woodgrove Animal hospital treated him for broken ribs and made arrangements for his shelter.

Moe is loved and missed by his wife Monique of Nanaimo, daughters Michelle of Victoria and Marcia (Jean-Sebastien) and granddaughter Genevieve, all of Ottawa, his mother Claire of Strathmore, sister Suzanne of Calgary, brother Arthur (Cindy) of Strathmore, and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Henri, brothers Herb, Louis, and Jacques, and brotherin-law John. Moe grew up in Wakaw, SK. He loved riding his Harley, hunting down the best cinnamon buns on the Island, and going on adventures with Monique and his dog Ollie at his side. He was always helping others, and perhaps no better demonstration of his generous nature can be found than the fact that, just so he would have enough room for his granddaughter, he drove a minivan. A minivan. He was a true original, and we miss his warmth and sense of humour already. Celebration of Life to be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Ave, Nanaimo on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Flowers gratefully declined. Mildred Sarah Maria (Ratchford) Tremblay
HELP WANTED
Mildred Tremblay, from “Reading Obituaries On Wednesday October 29, Mildred, known as Sarah later in her life, left us gently, full of light and grace, with loving daughters at her side. She was predeceased by her loving husband Ross in 2010 and is deeply grieved by her 6 daughters Suzanne, Leila, Anita, Lorraine, Joan and Mia, her 10 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren, and many dear friends from both her writing and meditation groups. Her daughters were her pride and joy and the centre of her life. Mildred Sarah Maria Ratchford was born in Kenora, Ontario. A childhood friend said the following about her: “Millie was easily the most beautiful girl in Kenora but it was her humour and lightheartedness that charmed everyone. She met and married Rosaire Tremblay in 1947. The couple lived in Victoria, Edmonton, Montreal & Toronto before moving to Campbell River in 1960, then to Nanaimo in 1970. Sarah was a strong supporter of women’s rights, an active environmentalist and a very talented poet & writer with 3 books published by Oolichan Books: her collection of short stories “Dark Forms Gliding, and 2 books of poetry: “Old Woman Comes Out of Her Cave and “The Thing About Dying. She was the recipient of many awards including the Vancouver International Writers’ Festival Award for poetry, the League of Canadian Poets Award, The Arc National Poetry Award and the Stephan Leacock, Orillia Award for humour, and was once the judge for a Canada-wide poetry contest. A feisty, brilliant, fiercely truthful and radiantly loving being, those close to Sarah also knew and loved her sometimes dark humour and “Irish impishness; however core to her life was her profound belief in loving kindness and “one-ness, and in the words of one of her daughters “she so desperately wanted, with the blinding brilliance of her whole dear heart, for every last being’s happiness. Rest in peace beautiful dreamer - together forever, forever together. “The thing about dying is, I won’t get over it; I can’t say, well, that sure taught me a lesson – Let’s go home and have a drink. ~ Mildred Tremblay, from “The Thing About Dying Sarah’s “A-wake was held on Nov. 1, 2014. In lieu of flowers, if anyone wishes to make a donation to the Haven Society in Mildred’s name, she would love that.

Barsby on a mission in bowl game I
FOOTBALL TEAM gets a chance to defend B.C. title.
V.I. Raiders announce new coach BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
One team has scrappers, the other has the star power. But even though the Barsby Bulldogs and the Mission Roadrunners got to the B.C. championship a different way, their paths have now converged leading up the Subway Bowl on Saturday (Dec. 6) at B.C. Place stadium. “We’ve got to be our best and the ball’s got to bounce our way,” said Rob Stevenson, Bulldogs coach. Barsby, the defending AA varsity champions, will try to match up against Mission and its marquee athlete, Jesse Walker. The Roadrunners’ quarterback pretty much willed his team into the B.C. final, running for 338 yards and eight touchdowns in a 62-61 overtime thriller semifinal against the Ballenas Whalers. “We’re playing a man…” said Stevenson. “Once we get our hands on him, we’ve got to hang on and we’ve got to get help in there, fast.” Stevenson said the Roadrunners have a special offensive line and talented backs and receivers and would be a deep playoff team even without their star. But the defensive game plan will be built around stopping Walker. “If we shut him down, we shut down Mission,”

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN
“
Barsby Bulldogs AA varsity football players Tyler Hill, North Rainey and their teammates will compete in the Subway Bowl provincial championship against the Mission Roadrunners on Saturday (Dec. 6) at B.C. Place stadium.
said Tyler Hill, Barsby linebacker. “It’s going to be, this week, really focusing on tackling and getting him on the ground [and] playing within our scheme, every guy on the defence doing their own job. It’s teamwork, really.” North Rainey, Barsby’s quarterback and also a defensive back, said Walker can be contained if the Bulldogs execute and go to the right spots on the field. “Get helmets to him, get his feet stopped and drive him back,” Rainey said.
We’ve got to be our best and the ball’s got to bounce our way.
The Bulldogs’ offence will be more balanced – no guy is likely to score eight TDs. “If we run the ball hard, then it will open up our pass game,” Rainey said.
“We’ve just got to do what we’ve done every other week to win.” The Subway Bowl is a little different, though. Entering the big dome signifies that the players’ ultimate goal is within their grasp. “It’s special, man,” Hill said. “It’s really, truly a one-of-a-kind feeling and it’s something that everybody definitely remembers for the rest of their life.” The Bulldogs may be defending champs, but they know they had to scrap their way to get back to this stage.
“They’ve shown a lot of character this year, resiliency, patience,” Stevenson said. “This entire year has been a story of us overcoming challenges.” Now comes the big one. There’s one more opponent, one more obstacle, one star to stymie, one score to settle. “We’re in for a battle,” Stevenson said. “I don’t know if I’ll predict winners, but I’ll predict a lot of valour out there.” GAME ON … Saturday’s kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. at B.C. Place stadium. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
The V.I. Raiders only had to look as far as the next city over to find their new coach. Nanaimo’s junior football club was set to announce yesterday after press time that Jeremy Conn has been named as head coach. “It was something meant to be,” said Hadi Abassi, a V.I. Raiders director. Conn, who lives in Nanaimo, coached Parksville’s Ballenas Whalers to the provincial high school semifinal last week. He has more than 20 years of coaching experience, including at the junior level. “He started on Vancouver Island and he’s been all across the country coaching, so it’s not something new for him,” Abassi said. “I think the transition will be very, very easy for him based on his experience.” Conn has helped the Raiders as a guest coach in the past. “He’s been a fan of the Raiders for a long time and he’s a believer,” Abassi said. “He believes in the tradition we’ve built with Raiders football.” Look for more on Conn in an upcoming issue of the News Bulletin or online at www.nanaimobulletin.com/sports. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The Nanaimo Clippers duked it out in Island rivalry games the last two weeks and now they’ll mix things up a little bit. The Clips host the Merritt Centennials on Friday (Dec. 5). The Cents are a middle-of-the-pack team in the B.C. Hockey League’s tough Interior Division. “We know Mer ritt’s going to be a good opponent for us; they’ll be a good challenge,” said Cole Maier, Clippers forward. “It’s nice to see somebody new so we’re looking forward to that.” Anthony Rinaldi, another Clippers forward, said it’s a different sort of challenge to play out-of-division opponents. “We don’t know how strong they really are,” he said. “It’s kind of a mystery when we play them.” The Shipmen will look at some video on the opposition and take the coaching staff’s advice to heart. “We just follow our systems and listen to what coach [Mike] Vandekamp has to say. He takes us
through some steps before the game and we just have to follow them,” Rinaldi said. “The boys sort of know what to do. We’re 30 games in right now, so we just play our game and do what we can.” Maier said the mindset shouldn’t be much different stepping on the ice against Merritt. “We’re confident if we stick to our style of play, we should be able to take care of business,” he said.
“
We should be able to take care of business.

Hoops season gets started
I
Home for the Holidays
WELLINGTON WINS its first game, 66-17.
It was the first game of the season and at times, it looked that way, but there were some hoops highlights out there, too. The Wellington Wildcats senior girls started basketball season with a 66-17 road win over the Ladysmith 49ers on Tuesday. “When you’re just practising and watching them over and over it’s harder to tell, because you’re just playing against each other, but it’s good to see they moved the ball around, a lot of talking, everybody took their roles,” said Bill Fraser, cocoach of the Wildcats. Olivia Mjaaland had 31 points for Wellington and Shania Shabbas added eight. “Everyone had good minutes and played h a rd . We w o r k e d together really well,” Mjaaland said. Marika Grubac led Ladysmith with nine points.

VALENTINO Angel came to our shelter when her owner found out she had severe allergies to her cats. Angel is quite an affectionate cat who loves just about everyone she meets. She has lived happily with other cats but would also be very happy to be an only pet. Angel has lived her life as an indoor cat and would prefer to continue living indoors only.

ANGEL We would like to introduce everyone to Emily. This beautiful girl is looking for a quiet home where she can be the only pet. She isn’t a fan of sharing her affection with others. Her last home was a little too busy for her but since coming to the shelter she has been on a calming diet and has settled down beautifully. If you are looking for an affectionate sensitive girl to complete your family Emily might just be the cat for you!

Bucs make blockbuster deals
I
JR. B hockey club moves top scorer to division rival. BY GreG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Buccaneers didn’t plan to be active on the trade market, but they ended up making a major shakeup. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League club sent top goal scorer Will McNamara and defenceman Thor Rosback to the Campbell River Storm on Monday,
then turned around and acquired two high-profile local forwards from junior A teams. Joining the Bucs are forwards Zach Funk and Nick Gomerich, as well as forward Jonah Pearson and D-man Quinlan Moore from the Oceanside Generals and Joe Gage from the Storm. “We weren’t throwing in the towel…” said Glen Smith, Bucs general manager. “That’s what it looked like originally, but there were some underlying things there.” Gomerich played in the WHL last season and
had been with the B.C. Hockey League’s Powell River Kings this year, while Funk had been with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs the past two and a half seasons. “We’re expecting quite a bit of offence from those two,” Smith said. “We wish [our former players] well, but the overall strength of our team has improved.” GAME ON … All the new Bucs will be in the lineup tonight (Dec. 4) against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at 7:15 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The 2015 model year vehicles are rolling into dealerships, with just a few stragglers set for later arrival in the New Year. This week, the Driveway team takes a look at what’s new, in print and online at drivewaycanada.ca, starting with our chief test driver Zack Spencer.

New Year’s Resolution: Hot rides and buys for 2015 Here are what I consider to be five important cars for 2015.
This sixth generation Explorer marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic SUV, with over 350,000 sold in Canada so far.
Mazda MX-5 2015 Jeep Renegade Over the last few years Mazda has been introducing There is no question that the merger of Fiat and vehicles with its new Skyactiv technology but there is Chrysler has helped to introduce many new vehicles. one car that will signify the culmination of all the things The small car segment is a perfect example; the Fiat Mazda does well, the next generation MX-5 (Miata). 500 and its variations has been a plus The MX-5 will come in 2015 as a 2016 for Chrysler’s bottom line. Built in Europe model and all eyes are on Mazda to see on the Fiat 500L platform, this smaller what it can deliver. The bodywork is more Jeep Renegade replaces the Compass dramatic and having seen it in person, and Patriot models. Powered by either the dimensions look fanatic but the new a 160hp, 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder front grille might take a while to adapt too. or a larger 184hp, 2.4L 4-cylinder, Jeep The two-seat cockpit is roomier, thanks to claims that this compact crossover is a wider body and longer wheelbase but still a capable vehicle because of two the overall length is 105mm shorter and by Zack Spencer available all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. 20mm lower. The standard models will be available with front-wheelThe 2.0L Skyactiv direct injection 4-cylinder will power drive (FWD), with either a 6-speed manual or 9-speed this lightweight car and power will go to the rear automatic transmission. wheels though a 6-speed manual transmission. Engine Styling is all-American; the signature Jeep grille is maroutput has not been announced, neither has the price, ried perfectly into the boxy design, as too are other Jeep but expect the car to be competitive with the 2015 styling cues. The interior is has a rugged, yet upscale model on price. design that features all of Jeep’s latest technology, Ford Explorer including the award winning Uconnect infotainment The sixth generation Ford Explorer will arrive in 2015 system. Pricing has not been announced but expect it as a 2016 model, now with new 2.3L EcoBoost engine shortly as it is due at dealerships very soon. available on the base and XLT trim. This replaces the older 2.0L Ecoboost and provides a 270hp, a 13 per cent bump over the last version. The 290hp 3.5L V6 is carried over but the Sport trim and new Platinum trim will be fitted with the 365hp Ecoboost V6. Ford claims that styling is the number one purchase consideration so the shape was retained but new grille and LED headlamps help refresh the look.
Honda HR-V Coming in 2015 is another SUV, smaller than the CR-V, helping to define the new subcompact SUV market. This little runabout is built off the excellent Honda Fit platform and will include many of the features that make that car a standout. The first is the interior of the HR-V. It will also feature Honda’s Magic Seats that flip
“GO FOR THE BEST”
and fold for amazing versatility. The same 1.8L 4-clinder engine with 138hp will power this vehicle, either with FWD or AWD, through a continuously variable transmission or 6-cpeed manual. Pricing will be introduced closer to the introduction this coming spring. Built in Mexico, the HR-V will give Honda the same leg up that the original CR-V did for the small SUV segment. Chevrolet Volt It might surprise many people that the best selling electric car in Canada is the Chevrolet Volt, not the sexy Tesla Model S. There are many reasons for this, mainly the fact that the Volt provides all-electric transportation for 65 kms but with the aid of a small 4-cylinder generator to extend the range over 300 kms. This car has all of the upside of an electric car with none of the range limiting restrictions. In 2015, Chevrolet will introduce the second generation of Chevrolet Volt, one that hopes to improve on the usability of the car in terms of comfort and electric driving range. General Motors will showcase the next generation car in January at the Detroit Auto Show and the company’s CEO has stated that the new car “will store more energy in its battery pack with fewer cells, yet go further on a charge.” General Motors claims that 80 per cent of current Volt owners commute entirely on electric power, so any improvement to range will help increase this number. The Volt isn’t a huge volume seller for General Motors but this new model will help the company to showcase what it can do technologically. General Motors has the capability to produce some the most advanced cars on the road.
Alexandra Straub writes this week about the unusual new colours featured on cars at the LA Auto Show. Do you favour one colour when you buy a car. If so, what and why?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK!
Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer.
Safety Tip: On average, there are almost double the crashes resulting in injury or fatality in B.C. due to driving too fast for conditions in December. In poor conditions, slow down, increase your following distance and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

Price is right on new vehicles under $25K by Alexandra Straub
If you’re in the market for a new car but don’t haven an unlimited budget, fear not, you have quite a few options. VW Golf The VW Golf is undeniably popular. With more than 30 million sold around the world since it first hit the streets, it just keeps getting better. For 2015, the everpopular three or five-door variant comes with a new engine, new architecture and new sheet metal. An all-new, 1.8-litre directinjected turbocharged
engine, delivering 170 horsepower and 184 pound power it-feet of torque. The shape and design elements remain as defined, as ever, with a distinctive C-pillar and roofline framing classic Golf side windows, but the striking new front end and steeply sloped hood leave no doubt this is an all-new model. Honda Fit The all-new, five-passenger, five-door vehicle comes with style and flair. And just because it doesn’t have a huge price tag, it doesn’t mean you don’t get some pretty great standard
The Subaru Legacy is a pleasant surprise for its price, says columnist. features. The 2015 Fit marks the debut of an all-new directinjected 1.5-litre DOHC
i-VTEC engine. It produces 130 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 114 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm. Engine output
PHOTO submiTTed
is increased by 13 horsepower and 8 lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing engine.
Nissan Micra It’s small and comes with a small price tag, but expect big things from the all-new Nissan Micra. At one of Canada’s lowest MSRPs – it competes directly with the Mitsubishi Mirage for that title – it’s amazing what you can get for so little. Under its hood is a 1.6L, four-cylinder engine that produces 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque. OK, it’s not a lot but certainly enough to get you around. Available in three models, the Micra S, SV and top-ofthe-line SR, these micro cars will be able to be matched
with a five-speed manual transmission, or a fourspeed automatic. Subaru Legacy The all-new Subaru Legacy will pleasantly surprise those in need of a mid-size sedan with all-wheel drive. There’s room for five, and its 2.5L, four-cylinder engine produces 175 horsepower. Whether you’re looking for a hatchback, sedan, or a micro car, the 2015 model year has all-new vehicles in that segment and more. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca
BUILT BETTER. BACKED BETTER. The Chrysler 200 is an attractive car.

Cruise in style with new rides by Rob Rothwell
You can pay a fortune for a premium brand but you needn’t break the bank to buy wheels with style. Chrysler 200 Chrysler stunned the marketplace with the introduction of its completely new 200 Sedan, resetting benchmarks for style, panache, and performance within a fiercely competitive segment. The base engine is a 2.4 litre four-cylinder affair that feeds 184 horsepower to the front wheels through a segment-exclusive ninespeed automatic transmission. Acura TLX The four-door Acura TLX Sedan replaces the former TSX and TL sport sedans, merging their respective strengths into a single product positioned as the brand’s mid-level contender. The TLX delivers plenty of sport-inspired luxury built around a 206 horsepower 2.4L four-cylinder power plant fused to an eightspeed automatic transmission. Audi A3 Looking remarkably like the highly successful Audi A4 sedan despite casting a shadow 245mm shorter, the new A3 sedan is sure to capture the attention of entry-level Audi buyers that scorn the A3’s hatchback
design despite the vehicle’s praiseworthy driving dynamics and general practicality. The 170 horsepower 1.8L TFSI I-4 power plant turns the front wheels through the auspices of Audi’s six-speed S tronic automatic gearbox.

Mercedes-Benz C class sedans Despite slotting beneath the venerable E-Class in the Mercedes-Benz hierarchy of sedans, the new C-Class Sedan takes on a notably formal appearance and a more upscale demeanor for 2015. It’s also lighter and more powerful thanks to the extensive use of aluminum and a pair of revised engines. The C 300 receives a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 power plant capable of 241 horsepower. Need more oomph? A 3.0L twin-turbo V6 places 329 horsepower under the hood of the C 400. BMW 228i, M235i Reminiscent of the legendary 1968 BMW 2002 Coupe, today’s 228i and M235i coupes combine the outstanding driving dynamics of the stubby BMW 1-Series coupe, which they replace, with a sleeker, more aggressive interpretation of the iconic brand’s ethos. The 228i is the tamer of the pair, but with 241 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, its 2.0L twin-turbocharged I-4 engine delivers highly spirited performance nonetheless.

A world of GOOD WISHES. One of the real joys this holiday season is the opportunity to say thank you and wish you the very best for the new year.
In the theatre you can be anyone you want to be. If your heart can believe it, you can achieve it. All that is required is a deep breath, and a leap. Let’s leap together.

for many families at Christmas!
At Christmas time each year the community newspapers of Black Press organize and promote the PENNIES FOR PRESENTS CAMPAIGN, which raises money for charity. For the last 18 years the PENNIES FOR PRESENTS campaign has raised more than $160,000 (in Nanaimo alone!) in pennies, nickels, dimes and other change for various local community charities. Frank Legh was the founder and driving force behind the Pennies for Presents, and in honour of Frank’s memory we will be continuing this campaign, now called Coins for Kids. We thank you for your continued support!
