Council asks for stay on Colliery dam order BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

The City of Nanaimo will fight the province’s order to remediate the Colliery dams. Nanaimo city council voted 8-1 at an open meeting Monday to request a stay against the provincial order for the dams and file an appeal with the Environmental Appeal Board. It will also send the Dam Safety Section a beautification and dam-hardening remediation proposal, which is anticipated to address potential safety hazards and add extra features, like an amphitheatre and wheelchair ALTERNATE OVERTOPPING ramp, for method from engineering less than $3 firm GSI introduced as million. possible solution to Coun. It’s a credible method and least expensive and least intrusive, according to supporter Coun. Bill Bestwick, who called for a stay and appeal based on the information and the need for time to pursue the option. It’s unknown if council will be able to get a stay, which, if granted, would prevent the city from having to do remediation while the province’s order is in dispute. The stay is estimated to cost $20,000 to $40,000 to prepare and the city’s solicitor has advised it’s difficult to get. City bureaucrats are also not convinced the province will accept the alternative option.

An admitted senior member of the Nanaimo Hells Angels was given a five-year prison sentence by a B.C. Supreme Court judge Tuesday. Judge Robin Baird ruled that Robert Frederick Widdifield, 63, was part of, although not personally involved in, an October 2010 extortion plot with an alleged member of the Hells Angels and a pair of associates. A man was forced to pay $160,000 and had a yacht taken as a result. As part of his sentence, Widdifield was ordered to pay $120,000 restitution for the boat and also had a lifetime weapons ban imposed. Crown counsel sought six to eight years in prison and John Green, defence lawyer, sought two and a half to three years, but Baird said five to six was appropriate. The judge took into account Widdifield’s

modest criminal record, good behaviour during nearly five years on bail waiting for the case to go to trial, as well as the substantial restitution payment. Despite a long-standing association with biker gangs, Baird said Widdifield had a “fairly minor and dated” criminal record, including charges of assault from the 1970s and ’90s. Baird also took into consideration that Widdifield is the centre of his family’s life. He is in a long-term marriage and raised three daughters, who Baird said, “seemed to be successfully launched in reputable, law-abiding directions.” Charges against Widdifield were stayed in June 2013, citing court delays, but Crown successfully appealed to the B.C. Supreme Court and the trial took place last fall. Tuesday’s sentencing hearing was adjourned from March. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

WHY LATEX?

As a consumer in today’s marketplace I strive to purchase products that are made as close to home as I can get, items that are cleaner and greener, always with an eye on value. With over a quarter of a century in the sleep industry I’ve seen thousands of mattress fails and very few wins. One of those wins is good quality, natural, pure, Talalay latex which I get from Latex International (LI) who in my opinion produces the best product. side and medium on the other) with a 3” soft latex topper. This combination gives you the best of both worlds – supportive, and pressure relieving.

Here is a partial quote straight from LI on quality and purity: “Our Talalay Natural is the best latex being offered on today’s market. Our Talalay all natural formulation is made from 100% natural latex from the rubber tree and the only other properties added is needed for the vulcanization process. No latex foam in the market is completely made of all natural ingredients. All latex rubber needs additional sulfur, zinc oxide, and vulcanizing agents to be made into a usable form. LI also uses a natural, mineral reinforcing agent to improve the strength and durability of the product. On a volume basis, this material is less than 10% of the latex foam make up. Latex used is all natural latex. The product is washed after the vulcanization process to remove residual residues.”

Talalay vs. Memory foam. Of the top four mattress companies in the US, one spends more in annual advertising than the other 3 combined, and this company only makes memory foam beds. This is why we see so much hype about memory foam. While memory foam seems to be good at relieving pressure, it actually only works one dimension – you sink into it until you hit the firmer surface underneath. Latex is two-dimensional: it supports you while reducing pressure. At John’s our latex mattresses have a 6” medium and/or firm base (and yes, we can build you a mattress that is firm on one

Latex doesn’t sleep hot. “Too hot” is the biggest complaint I hear about memory foam. Memory foam requires body heat to collapse the foam cell structure in order to conform to your body curves; this collapse prevents air flow and traps body heat. This same process also creates a crater where you sleep, when you turn over the feeling is like rolling uphill leaving a hole behind. I’ve had many people tell me they wake up exhausted from this process. LI Latex is seven times more breathable than memory foam. Talalay latex is healthier. Our Talalay latex is harvested from rubber trees that create an inherently hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, mold and mildew resistant sleep environment that doesn’t off-gas like as memory foams can. Latex lasts longer. I have a sample of latex that was in a client’s favorite chair for 50 years and is still in pretty good shape (better shape than me at 50)! Latex from LI has been proven to last 20 times more than leading memory foam. Come and talk to our sleep specialists about your sleep needs. You can email me directly anytime. john@johnsbedrooms.com

Inbrief Review tasked to find

options for fire service

city scene

Robbery nets jail sentence Michael Wayne Drew Zabloski, 21, received a five-year sentence in Nanaimo provincial court yesterday for his role in the January robbery of the Terminal Park liquor store. In addition, he will serve one year for aggravated assault to run consecutive to the robbery conviction. He also received a two-year concurrent sentence for a home invasion, according to Nanaimo RCMP. Chance Kenton Nicol, 21, was also charged in the robbery and pleaded guilty in March, which earned a two-year sentence. Police say a third man is in custody in another province for a separate offence and his involvement in the robbery is still under investigation. During the robbery, one of the suspects fired a shotgun into the store ceiling and bear spray was discharged at one of the store employees. No one was injured.

currENt chiEf Tom Whipps set to retire at the end of June. By Tamara Cunningham THe NeWs BulleTIN

The District of Lantzville has hired former Saanich chief administrative officer Paul Murray to lead a fire services review. Council voted 6-1 to hire Murray, who’ll do an estimated $6,300 review of the fire department and the district’s options to replace outgoing fire chief Tom Whipps. The chief’s position is currently volunteer, with a $12,000 honorarium. A district report shows the consultant will look at costs and implications for fire service options, which could see the municipality keep the status quo position, move to an in-house full-career fire service, or contract out fire protection. The report will also include an overview of the existing service and input as well as feedback from the fire department. Whipps told council at an open meeting Monday that he still has concerns about the consultant’s lack of fire credentials. Coun.

Trial date expected to be set next month

The trial date for the accused in the April 2014 Nanaimo Western Forest Products mill shooting is expected to be set on May 25. Kevin Douglas Addison, 47 at the time of the incident, is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder and two counts of attempted murder in relation.

A preliminary hearing took place in March and while it was thought a date would be set on Monday, it was pushed back. “[We want] to make sure everything is ready before we set a date, basically that’s it,” said Scott Van Alstine, Crown counsel.

The clock is ticking and it’s more important in this stage of the game that we get it accomplished.

Dave Scott, however, said it’s better to have somebody from the outside and who has interview skills and management experience. Coun. Jennifer Millbank said she’s sensitive to the concern the consultant might not have specific experience on the floor or managing a fire hall, but under the circumstances, the district has to get the review done. “He may not be perfect. He may not be the ideal candidate, but the clock is ticking and it’s more important to me in this stage of the game that we get it accomplished,” she said. The review is expected to take five days. Whipps is expected to retire at the end of June.

Smoking, electrical problem ALMANAC cited as possible fire causes Weather

#601-5800 Turner Rd. Nanaimo 250.751.2966

Investigations on a pair of fires that displaced 16 people from two separate residences last week in Nanaimo’s south end have concluded. An April 9 fire on Nicol Street started at the back of the building’s exterior, according to a press release from the City of Nanaimo. While the cause of the fire has not been determined, investigators believe that poorly discarded smoking materials caused the blaze. The six occupants of the house were displaced and the investigation revealed smoke alarms were removed or disabled. As for an April 11 fire on Fifth Street, investigators say the source of the fire was an electrical cord connected to a table lamp in one of the upper-floor bedrooms in a middle unit of an apartment complex. Smoke alarms sounded in that situation and 10 people were displaced. Nanaimo Fire Rescue says the incidents remind people to check their alarms and electrical cords.

Firefighter training standardized

I

EStabliShES miNimum safety levels. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

A new training guidebook could help firefighters train quickly to prevent injuries or deaths. The Structure Firefighters Competency and Training Playbook was sparked by the death of Chad Schapansky, a Clearwater, B.C., volunteer firefighter killed fighting a restaurant fire in 2004. The incident highlighted the need for minimum training standards for all firefighters to ensure their safety when attacking a fire from inside a building, dealing with hazardous materials or other dangerous tasks. B.C. fire chiefs, fire training officers and the fire commissioner office collaborated on the playbook to revise training standards set out in 2003. Gordon Anderson, B.C. fire commissioner, said the playbook focuses training on minimum standards.

News BulletiN file

Firefighters in city and rural departments face standardized training requirements to ensure safety.

“Previously the standard was the (National Fire Protection Association) standard itself, in its entirety, which is a very far-reaching and wide, in scope, document and what it essentially did is include all types of training,” Anderson said. “Whether or not you actually provide certain types of service, you’d still be bound by that training standard.” Safety is the primary concern, but benefits of standardized certification also include transferable personnel skills between fire departments. Craig Richardson,

Nanaimo fire chief, said municipal departments won’t be affected much because of the levels of continual training provided to full-time firefighters, but there will be some pressure to get volunteer or paid-on-call department staff trained up. “Where there’ll be an impact is on Protection Island, where they’re operating without full-time staff or are in a delayed response until fulltime staff get there,” Richardson said. Rural paid-on-call departments also will be spending more money on training. Certification means

incurring fees for writing tests and having them evaluated, but there are options for how the training is carried out. John Marmot, Lantzville Fire Department deputy chief, said much of its training can be done in-house and in co-operation with Parksville Volunteer Fire Department to keep costs down. Lantzville’s 27 paidon-call firefighters can do most of the theory work at home. “These guys then get a certificate at the end of it, which I think is good and it’s good for their resumés as well,” Marmot said. Ron Gueulette, Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department chief, said his 35 firefighters are doing online training offered through the Justice Institute of B.C., but there are there are 33 exams to cover and just writing each exam costs $25. For a fire department that normally budgets $10,000 a year for training it’s a big expense. “You go through that pretty fast,” Gueulette said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

With zero snow pack this past winter, the city is concerned that water supply may be stressed. Community schools extended to north end

I

plEaSaNt vallEy and Rock City elementary schools become hubs for area. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

The Nanaimo school district is looking to bring the community school model to the north end of Nanaimo. The current model sees two groups – or families – of community schools in Harewood and Cedar, and a report from Bob Esliger, assistant school superintendent, recommends going to a three-zone model. The northern zone would consist of

Rock City and Pleasant Valley elementary schools. South and central zones would each have two coordinators, while one coordinator would be responsible for the north, he said. Individualized student programming during and after school, and increased staffing to enhance student

safety, not only after school but also on evenings and weekends, would be amongst the things offered. According to Dale Burgos, school district spokesman, the current model focuses on certain areas in Nanaimo, but there are vulnerable students across the whole district. “When you have a community schools program like this, it will address the vulnerable students in those schools.

Instead of only focusing on certain areas, it’s including all students,” Burgos said. “That’s a big piece behind it.” Esliger said there has been an evolution to the community school model. When it first started, a school became a community school and there would be a coordinator that would only work at that particular school. “But as we’ve evolved in our district, our community

schools became hubs for the community, so we have fully embraced the hub model and so now in looking at the north end of the district, we have determined that those two neighbourhoods would be good hubs to bring students together,” said Esliger. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

The News BulleTiN

Lantzville Fire Rescue has new firefighting power. The district’s half-milliondollar frontline fire engine arrived this month. It’s the first custom-built chassis for the fire department, with enhanced safety features for firefighters, better lighting and the storage capacity to allow it to become both a pumper and rescue truck in the future. The engine is also expected to maintain the community’s insurance rating. Fire Chief Tom Whipps said the truck will be a big benefit to the community and it’s a relief to get it. “It’s always good to see a lot of hard work come together,” he said, crediting the work of a committee of four or five members. “The next step is to complete the training and

Costs were originally estimated at $375,000, but has seen increases to the budget, including by $8,523 last year to accommodate changes around service and safety.

The district paid a net $524,354, which includes a GST rebate. It also plans to sell the 34-year old engine No. 4 for surplus. Big Bad Wolf on trial for Law Day

I

froNt StrEEt courthouse hosts variety of events. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Adults and children will have an opportunity to experience a trial first-hand at Nanaimo provincial court on Law Day this Saturday (April 18). As part of Law Week festivities that celebrate the signing of the Charters of Rights and Freedoms, the Front Street courthouse will host a number of events, including a mock trial with children serving as jury, according to Laura Tay-

lor, a family law lawyer and organizer. Volunteers putting on the trial will be in costume as the case of Regina versus the Big Bad Wolf will be heard and the Three Little Pigs will be called to testify, according to Taylor. “There’s a verdict as to whether the Big Bad Wolf should be guilty on all counts or not, so that’s a lot of fun.” In addition, Nanaimo RCMP will be demonstrating police dog services. The police will also demonstrate Walk the Line, which will see children donning goggles that mimic alcohol impairment while trying to complete a roadside impairment test. “There are tours of the sher-

iff’s cells downstairs ... The RCMP will also [do] a talk on drugs on the streets of Nanaimo, the facts and current concerns. We’re also having a Crown counsel who’s part of a domestic violence organization in the community who will be doing a talk on Nanaimo’s response to domestic violence,” Taylor said. While photos aren’t usually allowed in the courthouse, there will be an exception made for Law Day, and still photos will be allowed in the mock trial room. No other video or photos can be taken anywhere else in the building. Events will run between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Firm offered overtopping solution to council last year From /1

Staff say the plan doesn’t meet Dam Safety Section regulations, lacks an engineered design and needs to be peerreviewed by an engineer because the method has never been applied to a B.C. dam. The proposal also isn’t all that new. GSI offered a Colliery solution for less than $3 million to council last year, and while the company has been included in staff recommendations as something to explore, politicians haven’t

previously directed staff to pursue it, according to Toby Seward, the city’s acting general manager of community development and protective services. City manager Ted Swabey told council GSI was on the radar as a solution, but the challenge now is it’s past the deadline. “I don’t think that it meets dam safety requirements and I don’t think you can do it this year, but at least we are talking in a common way that there’s

a solution that you might be able to get behind,” he said. Mayor Bill McKay said he supported the alternative and the stay because it’s moving forward and Bestwick believes the Dam Safety Section would be respectful of the city’s willingness to spend on a stay and appeal to get the right answer. “This, to me, has been an expense up until now. Everything after this, to me, is an investment,” Bestwick said.

Saving school comes at cost

Rumours of Cedar Secondary’s demise were greatly exaggerated. Nanaimo school district trustees voted last week to recommend the re-opening of the high school in 2016. It shouldn’t come as any surprise, as that course of action was central to the election platform of several trustees. By re-opening Cedar Secondary, they are, in a way, keeping an election promise. At the same time, they have put themselves in position to break another election promise – the promise do what’s best for students across the school district. With the school district projecting multimillion-dollar budget shortfalls every year, an extra school on the books spreads resources more thinly. The secretary-treasurer will crunch the numbers and create a workable budget, but it’s not going to be pretty. The school board chairman suggested that recent community consultation justifies the trustees’ decision. The process, however, was of questionable value so soon after the election – trustees received a mandate then. The stack of surveys is mostly a mishmash of wildly varied viewpoints. Parents wrote about their kids, or their educational philosophy, or the good ol’ days, or they simply bashed the government. Parents who filled out the surveys didn’t have to make the math work – that’s up to the school board and district staff. And trustees made it a whole lot tougher, now, with an extra school and no further funding. It should be noted that this past weekend, almost all the trustees attended a rally calling for greater funding of public education, and some had stern words for the provincial government. They have to ask for more money because that’s their best hope, now, of balancing the budget in the coming years. It’s great news for Cedar that a high school is returning to that neighbourhood. It’s a fine school. It’s a community asset. It’s a lot of things, but in NanaimoLadysmith school district, it’s not a solution, and we need solutions. signed by B.C.’s colonial governor James Douglas in the 1850s. One of the biggest missing pieces in the latest agreement in principle is the share of federally regulated fisheries. This has been a theme of B.C. Treaty Commission reports in recent years, as Ottawa holds up treaties for years because it is unable or unwilling to offer shares of salmon in particular. Hunting and fishing rights are acknowledged even in historic treaties, and reaffirmed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Sharing these rights while maintaining conservation of fish stocks has been more than Ottawa, and in some cases neighbouring aboriginal communities, have been able to manage. Eyford’s findings, and the B.C. government’s sudden refusal to keep staffing a B.C. Treaty Commission that shows so little progress, have sent one overdue message. If participants aren’t prepared to make real compromises and show a willingness to conclude agreements rather than drag them out, they should leave and come back when they are ready to do so. u Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

Across the province right now you would be hard pressed to find a school district that isn’t struggling trying to balance its budget, some with upwards of $15 million shortfalls; could it be that all of them just don’t know how to manage their money? Or is it more likely that the chronic underfunding by our government is finally at a breaking point? There is a lot of finger pointing at school boards for not being able to find these mysterious savings and “lowhanging fruit” our government keeps mentioning, as if school boards across the province have

every child in this province if even their basic school conditions depend on how much their parents can fundraise? I don’t believe closing a few schools will solve our underfunding issues; it may allow us to balance our budget this year, but when the next set of cuts come we will be right back in this position, debating what school or community deserves funding more. Until we, as parents and a community take a stand and demand better funding for our children and schools the government will keep cutting.

Voting is a good way to get government to listen To the Editor,

While there is much hand wringing and crocodile tears about so-called voter apathy there is actually some satisfaction in certain parties that some segments of the population don’t vote much. New barriers such as additional voter ID to prevent the non-crime of electoral fraud is really designed to eliminate many who are poor or who have unstable housing arrangements such as students and lowpaid workers. That makes it easier to concentrate on pleasing older, settled, often wealthier people who vote in greater numbers. Polls from Nanaimo-Ladysmith indicate that 36.5 per cent of voters did not vote in the last election. Extrapolating from national figures,

Banners project paints new relationships Festival of Banners changing hands after more than two decades BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

In a few weeks’ time, hundreds of banners will grace the streets of Nanaimo. The banners are not corporate advertisements, nor are they plain and boring. They’re colourful, unique and created by residents of the Harbour City as part of a nearly three-decade long project known as the Festival of Banners. This year’s banners theme is My Favourite Things, which requires participants to create banners that highlight the things they enjoy most. “They don’t have to be artists either,” said Brenda Peck, Festival of Banners project coordinator. “Anybody who likes to draw is more than welcome.” Upon completion, the banners will be displayed throughout the city between May and October. The Festival of Banners began in 1987 and was been organized and paid for by the Nanaimo Art Gallery. However, this year’s festival is a joint project between the gallery and the Nanaimo Arts Council, which will become the festival’s sole

organizer beginning in 2016. “They [Nanaimo Ar ts Council] are excited about it and they are excited to make it grow into hundreds of banners,” Peck said.

THE NEWS BULLETIN

Festival of Banners project coordinator Brenda Peck.

Peck, who has been the festival’s project coordinator for the last 15 years, is responsible for making sure the 200 banners that will be created this year are properly painted and prepared for display. “It is not just a matter of coming in and painting a banner,” Peck said. In order to ensure the ban-

ners will survive the weather conditions, Peck monitors each of the painters’ progress. “One thing you have to be careful with these banners is that if you over paint them then they can rip,” Peck said. “If you under paint them then they will also rip. You really have to watch everybody paint because every molecule of fabric has to be covered.” Peck also determines where the completed banners will go on display, which she says is a delicate and time-consuming process. “I don’t just look at it,” she said. “I think about what stores and what businesses are around.” After 15 years of being the project coordinator, Peck has made plenty of friends and says that is what keeps her coming back each year. “It is the people,” Peck said. “I consider us all a family of painters.” To paint a banner or for more information about the Festival of Banners, please visit the Nanaimo North Town Centre, 4750 Rutherford Rd., or visit www.nanaimoartgallery.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

VIU graduate earns multiple awards A former Vancouver Island University student has had her work recognized south of the border. Earlier this month, creative writer Shelley Stein-Wotten saw her online web series All My Pants win three awards at the Los Angeles Web Series Festival, which were held on April 4 in California. All My Pants won the award for Outstanding Student Series, Outstanding Series Premise and Outstanding Score. “We were just over the moon to be recognized that many times for our little series,” Stein-Wotten said. Stein-Wotten hails from Nanaimo and graduated from Vancouver Island University’s

creative writing and journalism program in 2011. The Nanaimoite then attended the Vancouver Film School, where she studied writing and graduated in 2013. The web series, which was cowritten by Stein-Wotten and Dan Christensen, focuses on a pair of blue jeans named Gene, who is trying to get ahead in life. In addition to the show’s success in California, All My Pants was named as an official selection of the Korea Web Festival. For more information and to watch the online series, visit www.youtube.com/allmypantswebseries. You can also follow the series on Twitter @AllMyPants.

MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS PORTRAIT EXHIBITION

Port Theatre expansion remains on track

NAME SPONSOR for project anticipated to come on board. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

Gordon Lafleur Photography is looking for mothers and daughters who would like to participate in our 17th annual “Tribute to Mothers and Daughters” portrait exhibit. The show will open May 10th at the Quality Resort Bayside (Parksville). We’d love to include a variety of age groups as well as multi-generation portraits. If this is something you have always wanted to do, please call us immediately. We will not charge a session fee for any of the participants, and portraits included in the exhibit will be available at special one-time only prices.

Please call for more information and visit our website at

www.nanaimobulletin.com

The Port Theatre expansion project is well on track and there could be some big news on the horizon. According to Port Theatre general manager Bruce Halliday, the theatre recently engaged in a “very positive meeting” with a potential naming sponsor for the community performing arts centre. “The word is that they will be getting back to us very soon,” Halliday said. The Port Theatre Society is currently seeking $8 million to help pay for the expansion, which would be added

onto the side of the theatre. The proposed project, which is expected to cost $12.6 million, would include a 50-220 performance space, three separate rehearsal spaces and other amenities. Halliday would not comment on whether the potential sponsor was a local company or a major corporation. “I won’t speak to that at all,” Halliday said. “Not even a little bit. It will be a terrific sponsor.” The City of Nanaimo has committed $4.6 million to the project, but only if the Port Theatre Society can successfully raise the $8 million. “The project is on budget,” Halliday said. “We are very confident that we can raise that in the appropriate timelines.” Last year the Port Theatre raised $225,000 from private donors and submitted an

application for a $2.5-million grant from Heritage Canada. Halliday said that the project is well on track. “Design is going well and we are moving into the final phase of design,” Halliday said. There is no exact time frame on the anticipated sponsorship announcement. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Event drums up awareness Inbrief about teen mental health arts

REACHOUT PSYCHOSIS concert tour features performance by Vancouver rock band Froghead. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

A number of Harbour City high school students will be educated about psychosis this week. On Thursday and Friday (April 16-17), students at John Barsby Secondary School and Woodlands Secondary School will be educated about the devastating mental condition through an interactive concert organized by ReachOut Psychosis, a program run by the B.C. Schizophrenia Society and HereToHelp. “We really want to decrease the stigma about not wanting to talk about mental illnesses,” ReachOut Psychosis tour coordinator, Susan Nase, said. The ReachOut Psychosis event includes

a performance by Vancouver band Froghead and a tap dance performance from Nase. Froghead member Mike Young will also give a speech about how psychosis affected his life. “We include music and dancing and a lot of demos and interactive stuff with prizes to keep the kids really engaged,” Nase said.“It is a heavy topic ... and so we feel that this way the message will get through more effectively.” Psychosis is a severe mental condition that causes people to become delusional and hallucinate. Patients who suffer from psychosis or a psychotic episode fail to distinguish between reality

and fiction. According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, psychosis affects roughly three per cent of the population and symptoms typically occur when people are in their teens and early 20s.Those who experience psychosis for more than six months are diagnosed as having schizophrenia. Nase says the point of ReachOut Psychosis is to raise awareness with teenagers and young adults, who are most at risk of experiencing psychosis. “It is something you should be just as comfortable talking about as if you had a broken leg,” Nase said. ReachOut Psychosis began in 2005 and performs to more than 20,000 students provincewide each year. For more information, please visit www.reachoutpsychosis.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Graphic design students from Vancouver island university will be showing off their skills tomorrow night. On Friday (April 17) the design students will be hosting synapse, a public exhibition that showcases their work for the year, at the Vancouver island Conference Centre, 101 Gordon st., at 5 p.m. The event will include a presentation by graphic designer Matt salik, owner of Bully Design Co. Researchers say that no single dietary factor is as critical as magnesium. Magnesium helps your muscles and nerves function properly; it assists in keeping bones strong, the heart rhythm steady and blood sugar levels regulated. It promotes normal blood pressure and is required for producing and storing energy.

Get involved in your community by participating in a local event or take a more personal approach and commit to changing one thing in your life that will make a difference for the rest of the year. You could start a herb garden on your balcony or windowsill, commit to taking one less car trip per week, or even make a stronger commitment to the 6 Rs - reduce, refuse, reuse, regift, repurpose and recycle. Another great way to make a difference every day is to choose local, organically-grown vegetables and fruit, non-GMO products and ethically sourced meat, poultry and fish.

New Chapter’s extraction technologies helps to preserve a plant’s beneficial compounds, including its beneficial fats and oils.

The return of warm weather marks the return of road trips for millions of motorists across the country. Whether going to the beach or heading off to parts unknown, hitting the open road with the windows down is a time-honored tradition for drivers of all ages. But such road trips can prove disastrous if drivers don’t take the right steps to prepare their vehicles for spring and summer travel. The following are a few ways motorists can ensure their car is ready to tackle the open road. Tighten things up Loose parts, such as exhaust clamps, license plates and interior trim panels can create rattles and cause parts to get damaged or fall off. Wash your car A newly washed car not only looks good, but it’s often much

safer as well. Take your car to a car wash or auto detailer a few days before the trip and have the vehicle thoroughly cleaned. A thorough cleaning will remove dirt and grime from the vehicle’s undercarriage, not to mention unsightly bird droppings and water spots or salt stains leftover from winter. Fix foggy headlight lenses

Many spring and summer road trippers travel at night so their days can be spent soaking up some sun at the beach or lake. Before heading off for parts unknown, motorists should inspect their headlight lenses to reduce risk of accident. If the lenses are yellowed and foggy, that’s likely because salt, ozone and road debris has dulled them to a point where vision can be impaired, placing drivers and their passengers at risk. But foggy lenses don’t mandate an expensive headlight replacement. Products are available to restore lenses – ask your service centre to

chips in the windshields are a common problem regardless of the season. But such damage is most prevalent in the winter because of the extra debris that’s on the road. These nicks and cracks need to get fixed as soon as possible to prevent them from spreading and resulting in the need for a windshield replacement. For any repairs, please contact your service centre and discuss the best options for your vehicle and your budget.

recommend a brand. Check the battery Over time, battery terminals and cables will start to corrode. Such corrosion will eventually eat away at the battery’s parts, creating a bad connection that sooner or later will require the battery be replaced. Check the battery before your trip and remember to clean the battery periodically as part of routine vehicle maintenance.

Spring Car Care Special section Take steps to protect vehicle from hot weather Dramatic fluctuations in temperature can wreak havoc on automobiles. Extreme heat adds to an already high temperature under the hood, requiring ventilation and cooling systems to work that much harder. Proper maintenance and some hot weather guide-

lines can keep drivers safe and on the road when temperatures soar. Be sure the radiator is working properly and is filled with fluid at all times. Hot temperatures cause items to expand, such as air inside of tires. Make sure the tires are properly inflated so

blowouts do not occur. Keep up-to-date with oil changes and other routine maintenance. Proper air flow is essential to cool an engine and keep a vehicle air conditioning system operating efficiently. Park in the shade whenever possible.

Christina Windle Christopher Findlay theson sonofofMs. Ms.Findlay. Findlay.

Lucas was a loving big brother and precious son. He had a passion for Lego, enjoyed art class, family-time, and playing at the beach. He loved his baby brother immensely. He had many achievements: playing piano, skiing, riding his bike, learning to read and swim. Having cancer didn’t stop him from learning, growing, and enjoying life. He taught many people about true faith and bravery. A Celebration of Life will be held later this spring.

A March 5, 2016 wedding is planned.

LINDA McCOURT April 20, 2014 It has been a year since we talked, since we shared our stories. I didn’t know it then. I didn’t know what an impact your death would have. I didn’t know I would miss our daily talks so much. I didn’t know your words of wisdom would continue to be heard. I didn’t know how many lives you had touched. I didn’t know you had touched mine. I didn’t know we were friends. I didn’t know it then. But now I do. I miss you, my friend Teresa xo

SMITH, Harvie Emile February 17, 1928 - April 6, 2015 With heavy hearts, the family wishes to announce Harv’s passing on Monday, April 6, 2015. Harvie was born in Winnipeg and raised on a dairy farm in Treherne, Manitoba. He became an engineer and spent over 30 years working with the Department of National Defence. Hockey was the love of Harvie’s life and at the age of 80 he was still playing. He loved his family and will be dearly missed by them and his many friends. Harvie is survived by his wife Eileen, sons Kevin (Babe), Michael (Anna), and Leonard, daughters Christine (Grant) and Cindy, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son-in-law Ron Horne. We would like to thank Dr. Blair RudstonBrown, Dr. Peter King and the nurses on the third floor at NRGH. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. No service by request.

Frank Peter John Velsen 84, of Gabriola Island, quietly passed away at the Nanaimo Seniors Village on March 28, 2015. Frank was born August 12, 1930, in the Netherlands to Pieter and Margarite (Quast) Velsen, He was raised in Indonesia where he spent most of his early childhood. He came to Canada on one of the immigrant ships, landing in Halifax in 1954. Frank was a prolific reader and was continually learning. He was known for his endless sense of humour and love of nature - the songs of the birds and the howl of the wolf were music to his ears. He had the ability to enjoy life wherever it took him. Frank worked at a job he truly loved at the Nanaimo Biological Station for 30 years where, in addition to other accomplishments, he pioneered new photography techniques of salmon egg development. He always looked forward to spending time with his family and friends and he always had time for a chat, a joke and a smile. Frank is survived by his wife, Anne Velsen (Brown); his sister and her husband, Jan Roelof & Eveline Branbergen; daughter, Christine Velsen; son; Martin Velsen, son and wife; Adam & Josee Velsen, grandchildren; Keana & Kaleb and brother in-law and wife, Doug and Kathy Brown. He was a true gentleman, forever in our hearts! At Frank’s request, there will only be a small gathering of family and close friends honoring and celebrating his life.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To all the friendly, helpful staff at Home Hardware. Special thanks to Duane for putting together a fan that was beyond my capabilities. BEEF To the person who changed the rules and will not let staff take patients to another building for entertainment. If you can’t walk safely, you stare at four walls 24/7. Isn’t this supposed to be assisted living? BOUQUET To Tim and Robin at Big O Tire for the amazing customer service. The problem was solved within a couple of hours and I was on my way. BEEF To the thieves who stole our sapling monkey puzzle tree from the Harewood Dental Clinic garden. This tree was a memorial to Mark Lueke, the late husband of one of our dentists and loved teacher at Dover Bay Secondary. That is what you ripped out by the roots.

BOUQUET To Dave Tomlinson, case manager from WorkSafe B.C. for supporting my medical needs at my workplace. Also thanks to Ron from Mobility Store for his knowledge in selecting a product that meets my needs to work in a pain-free environment. BEEF To people who walk around with their mouths hanging open. You look ridiculous, and it ages your face 10 years and makes your IQ look 50 points lower. BOUQUET To the three people who helped me out of the Lost Lake trail after I hit my head. Thanks for staying with me until my husband arrived. BEEF To parents who do not teach their children proper table manners. Spilling food off the sides of their plate and not knowing how or when to use a knife make them really stand out in a negative way at other people’s houses.

BOUQUET To Kelly at Bowen TD for her patience and skill at ensuring I am able to use the online features to my best advantage. The information Kelly gave me has already saved me countless hours and trips to town.

BOUQUET To my lovely husband of nearly five years. Thank you for being wonderful, and understanding these past few months. You have been there for me for all that I’ve been going through and I really appreciate it.

BEEF To the orange scooter driver. Should you continue to ride two feet inside the white line, you will be hurt – maybe killed – by drivers who think they drive right past you. Learn the correct and safe position to ride on the road.

BEEF To our recently appointed ‘leader.’ The workers have not been crushed by your lack of integrity when you flew off the handle – just more aware of the many knives you have been hiding behind your shield of former friendship. Maturity and experience would have let the dust settle before throwing it back in our faces.

BOUQUET To the lady with the little white dog and the jogging stroller at Colliery dam. Thank you for helping me get my dogs into my truck. Without your help after my fall, I likely would have been lying there with my broken wrist for a while. BEEF To the drug store that has its overhead ceiling fans on so high it makes shopping unpleasant and painful in certain aisles. A large amount of seniors shop here – turning down the wind would have us buying more things.

BOUQUET To the kind, helpful folks at Gold’s Auto who saw us without an appointment at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday and fixed our brake problem at no charge. We made it home safe and sound thanks to you. BEEF To Nanaimo drivers. Bowen Road is not a race track – there is no trophy for being first place at the next red light. Slow down. BOUQUET To a very nice, young, intelligent cashier, Kelsey S., at Thrifty Foods in Port Place mall. He is always helpful to the customers who are in the most need. BEEF To the mean-spirited beefer. Your maligning character and lack of knowledge of the true issues damages a society coming off a recent $1.3-million capital campaign. Volunteers are intelligent – you are transparent. BOUQUET To Yellow Point Lodge for allowing us to look around and offered us free tea or coffee and dessert. Now that is good customer service.

BOUQUET To the young people who stopped their car to pick up my bicycle bag that had fallen off (unknown to me), then followed me to return the bag. BEEF To the dental clinic. I have been a patient for more than 10 years but when I requested an appointment for a cleaning and a checkup, I was informed I would have to go on a waiting list. I have now contacted a new dentist.

SUNDAY BRUNCH

BOUQUET To beautiful, lovely and very kind bus drivers Merv, Norene and Connie. BEEF The city’s latest changes to recycling plastics curbside is counteracting the objective for recycling. People are confused by the vague rules as to what plastics the city will accept. People are now throwing the majority of plastics in the garbage. BOUQUET To my neighbours and friends, who helped me during my surgery recovery. Special mention, to John, for nightly walks with Piper; to Anita, David, Vicky and Roland, for Sunday walks; to George for tree pruning, and more; to Judy and Lynne for help in my home. BOUQUET To the parents and grandparents of the Vesna Ukrainian Dancers for making the thousands of perogies and borscht for the successful Ukrainian Easter Bazaar. BOUQUET To the lady in Ricky’s in late March who kindly picked up my tab. It was unexpected and very much appreciated by the elderly grey-haired lady. BOUQUET To our awesome neighbours Ray and Diane for looking after our house and cat Goldie. You guys are the best. BOUQUET To Nanaimo Yacht Club for another enjoyable Easter egg hunt on Newcastle Island. Thanks to volunteers and donors for their hard work and generosity, and to the Nanaimo Harbour Ferry for providing free rides for children. BOUQUET To Nesvog’s Meats for allowing a customer to come in and buy a steak more than half an hour after closing time.

Premier Pirates get swinging at stadium I BASEBALL TEAM plays home opener this Sunday (April 19). BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

Some baseball teams talk about swinging for the fences and some teams back it up. The Nanaimo Hub City Paving Pirates will hit the baseball, they’ll hit it often, and they’ll hit it a long way this season. The city’s B.C. Premier Baseball League team holds its home opener this Sunday (April 19) at Serauxmen Stadium when the Abbotsford Cardinals come to town. The Pirates began league play last weekend with two wins and two losses. It was an inconsistent start, but an encouraging one, too, as the offence was prolific. “We’re a confident group,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “I haven’t seen a group like this in a while.” The Pirates are setting high standards for themselves, as players are already talking about making the PBL’s championship tournament and the possibility of winning it all. “With this team, with these players and our group, the way we’ve bonded together, we definitely have that potential,” said Zach Diewert, Pirates outfielder. Here’s a look at the 2015 Pirates: BATTING

Don’t tell the Pirates that it takes batters a while, at the start of the season, to get their timing at the plate. They scored at least seven runs in all four of their games last weekend. “Really, we’re not even all the way there for our offence; there’s still a little bit more exe-

North Rainey and Matt Skingle both started the year with productive weekends at the plate, Shawn Arabsky and Garrett Goodall are other middle-of-the-order guys and Shane Rogers has been the leadoff man. on throwing strikes,” said Goodall. “Some of the guys were just trying to be a bit too fine with their pitches but if they just throw strikes, hitters will get themselves out.” Goodall will get the start in

the Pirates’ home opener and brings stability to the staff. “He’s a guy that does throw strikes, who does get the first batter out,” Doug Rogers said. “He does all the things that we ask for.” Robert Busch, Sam Baker, North Rainey, Bryce BergStromquist and Aaron Page are some of the other members of the staff and Josh Burgmann will join the team later this summer. Goodall said the pitching staff consists of veteran, hard throwers. “It’s a bunch of guys who have really improved; it’s good to see,” he said.

Series tied after Vees win Game 4 BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

So much for tightchecking, low-scoring playoff hockey. The Penticton Vees outscored the Nanaimo Clippers 8-5 in a barnburner of a Game 4 on Tuesday night at Frank Crane Arena and the BCHL finals are now tied at two games apiece. The Clips held a 2-1 lead after one period of hockey Tuesday, but the Vees scored four straight goals in the second period, including three on the power play, to build a lead they didn’t relinquish. “It was a really interesting affair, to say the least,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “We just didn’t stay focused as well as we needed to be, so that’s why we lost the game.” The coach said his team generally played good hockey, skating well, forechecking with energy and producing shots, but had some costly stretches of play. “We took some bad penalties. The officiating is what it is – we had to kill those penalties; we didn’t…” said Devin Brosseau, Clippers alternate captain. Dakota Conroy, Vees forward, said his team scored “a couple lucky ones and a couple of good goals, as well” against Clippers goalie Guillaume Decelles. See ‘FINALS’ /37

Nanaimo Clippers defenceman Nick Gushue, middle, clears a puck out of his zone and away from Penticton Vees opponents Patrick Newell and Tyson Jost during Tuesday’s Game 4 at Frank Crane Arena.

“We’ve been creating good offence throughout most of the games and we’ve always had good spurts, but he’s been playing well and it was nice to get a couple by him tonight,” Conroy said. Brosseau, Sheldon Rempal, Spencer Hewson, Jake Jackson and Brendan Taylor scored for the Clippers. Steen Cooper and Tyson Jost led the Vees with two goals apiece and Hunter Miska was the winning goalie as shots ended up 41-38 in favour of the Vees. Conroy said winning Game 4 was huge for his team. “It’s a different mentality almost, now that we’re back to Square 1,” he said.

Junior Pirates start season

Team to debut new look From /36 DEFENCE

GAME ON

At the premier level, every team has players come and go every season, so every team is working on defensive chemistry at this time of year. “We tell our guys, hey, you’ve earned your spot, go out there and play, have some fun,” the manager said. “Mistakes will happen. If there were no mistakes it would be 0-0 and it would be awfully boring.” Warken is the starting catcher, Skingle plays first, Shane Rogers will be at second, Page at shortstop and newcomer Kevin Sengara at third. Diewert plays centre field with Rainey in left and Goodall or Josh Carless-Jones in right.

The Pirates are pumped up about getting into their home park this weekend. “Coming out on opening day in Nanaimo with your fans behind you, there’s nothing better, really,” Diewert said. The Pirates will debut new uniforms that day, “new unis that are pretty shocking, but the kids love them, they asked for them…” Doug Rogers said. “So we’ll see what they look like.” Sunday’s games are at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium. Admission is $5 for the doubleheader. For more schedule information, please visit www. bcpbl.com. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Slo-pitch nears opening day

John Annesley, left, treasurer of the Nanaimo Adult Recreational Slo-Pitch League, and players Susan Toth and Chuck Rogerson are looking forward to another ball season on the diamonds at the McGirr Sports Fields.

There are no sad days in Mudville when players take the bat in the Nanaimo Adult Recreational Slo-Pitch League – every day is happy and sunny. “It’s a good group. We compete, but it’s fun,” said Chuck Rogerson, one of the players. The league, for women aged 45 and up and men 50 and up, will hold registration next week for the coming season. Organizers are looking for any players,

GREG SAKAKI ThE NEwS BullETIN

and there is particularly a need for more ladies. “It’s a lot of fun, a lot of laughs, but people play hard, they try hard,” Rogerson said. Registration is Tuesday (April 21) and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. both days at the McGirr Sports Fields. Pick-up games will follow. For more information, please call 250390-2353 or 250-585-1132.

Timbermen teams meet in exhibition Two of the city’s Nanaimo Timbermen teams will play one another as they try to get ready for the start of their respective lacrosse seasons. The Timbermen junior A and senior B squads will play an exhibition matchup this Saturday (April 18) at 6 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. Admission is $10 or free for children. The junior A Timbermen start the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League season April 26 on the road against the

Coquitlam Adanacs and play their home opener May 2 against the Delta Islanders at 4:30 p.m. at the NIC. The senior B Timbermen start the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association season on the road April 23 against the Ladner Pioneers and play their home opener April 25 against the Valley Rebels at 7 p.m. at the NIC. Committed to Kids Three years ago, Ethan Baker, a 5-year-old boy with autism, ceased to communicate verbally, even with family. After months of silence, Ethan brought home Andy, an Autism Support Dog provided by BC and Alberta Guide Dogs. Within a few months, he was speaking again, proud to introduce his best friend. With Andy by Ethan’s side, the Nanaimo family can breathe easy—Andy is there when Ethan plays outside or when he needs help to calm his emotions. “We cannot imagine life without Andy,” says Tammy Baker, Ethan’s mom. “He provides Ethan with so much support.” Thanks to a grant from Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, more children with autism on the Island will benefit from Autism Support Dogs. The largest children’s health charity on Vancouver Island, Children’s Health Foundation raises money to ensure children

with disabilities and health challenges have access to the support they need, so they can have the same opportunities and life chances as other children. Children’s Health Foundation recently announced it will invest an incredible $2.25 million in children’s programs in 2015/2016. BC and Alberta Guide Dogs is one of this year’s 24 funded partners— the Foundation was invited to name one of the puppies; they named the pup Polly, after the girl who inspired the creation of the Foundation in 1922. “Our funding helps children and youth thrive and grow,” says Foundation CEO Linda Hughes. “We are grateful to our donors who support our work and help Island kids achieve great health outcomes.” Since 1984, Children’s Health Foundation has invested over $44 million in children’s programs. This year, the Foundation’s funding will reach nearly 40,000 children on Vancouver Island.
