Firefighters help search for survivors Specially trained dogs taken to Nepal Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Two Mission firefighters are in Nepal this week to help searchers locate missing people after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated the region Saturday, killing more than 5,500 and injuring thousands more. Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson and Captain Norm MacLeod along with more than a dozen Metro Vancouver firefighters are part of Canada’s response to the government of Nepal’s request for international assistance. Watkinson and MacLeod will be travelling with their highly trained dogs to search for survivors. “These are very, very special dogs,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. “There are only eight of these dogs in B.C., and two of them are in Mission.” According to Hawes, when the dogs put on their working vests, they “zero in on finding live people.” When someone is located the dog will scratch and bark. If a corpse is found, the dog will lie down and whine. He added the K9s are excited every time they are asked to work, but the job is psycholog-
ically hard on them as well as their human handlers. “They work for an hour, then have to rest.” Hawes, along with the rest of Mission council, gave their approval for the trip this past weekend after Watkinson presented them with a proposal to take the dogs to the disaster area. “It took about two seconds for us to say ‘go, but be safe’,” said Hawes. “Aftershocks are still happening there.” Despite the danger, Hawes felt it was a mission that couldn’t be turned down. “If we ever have an earthquake like that, we would like help too. Because we can help, we should.” Mission’s safety will not be compromised with the absence of its fire chief and a captain, said Hawes. “We have several people working in the assistant chief position, and we have very experienced firemen. It will not be a problem.” On April 25, a large earthquake hit Nepal, close to its capital Kathmandu. Canada is committing $5 million in humanitarian assistance.

‘We’re being fired’ District will allow park contract to lapse, review governance Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD
Brian Antonson doesn’t understand why fundraising efforts for the new observatory at Fraser River Heritage Park have to be stopped. The president of the Mission Heritage Association (MHA) isn’t sure if the district has the authority to halt volunteer efforts to finish construction of the facility. The decree came as part of a letter informing the association that the District of Mission would
not be renewing its maintenance agreement for Fraser River Heritage Park. The association has been maintaining the park for the past 35 years. While the letter says the agreement will be allowed to lapse, Antonson said members of the MHA feel like “we’re being fired.” He explained that the district informed the MHA at the end of 2014 that it planned to end its agreement, but he saw it as the new council merely doing its due

diligence. Antonson said he knew there had been some public complaints regarding the unfinished buildings – including the observatory – located in the park. However, he thought the agreement would likely be reworked. Under the present contract, the AHA receives $155,000 from the district to maintain the park. The group also has a budget of $150,000 that it raised through various events, for an approximate annual budget of $305,000.

Battle against illegal dumping
Public to be Clean-up costs district about $35,000 a year involved in parks plan Carol Aun
MISSION RECORD
FROM 1
Antonson said it will cost much more for the district to pay staff to do the work his organization has been doing. As for the observatory and other building projects, he doesn’t know what the council has planned. Mission Mayor Randy Hawes told the Record that most of the buildings onsite are amenities needed in the park, but the observatory project is more like a commercial venture and the operational costs would be funded by admission charges for school groups. “We want to make sure a sound business plan is in place,” before going forward said Hawes. Antonson said he had created a business plan for the observatory and sent it to the district. But Hawes indicated he had no idea how much it would cost to operate the facility. That is one of many things that needs to be investigated by staff. Hawes did estimate that it would cost about $300,000 to finish the observatory and make it operational. “We have to take charge,” said Hawes. “It’s past time to have a full assessment on those buildings.” He said he wants the public to be involved in any future discussions. The move to end the contract with the MHA is part of a bigger parks plan, explained Hawes “We have looked not only at Heritage Park, but all the parks in the district. We believe it’s time for a much broader governance structure that will cover all of our parks.” Fraser River Heritage Park is the only park in the district that has a separate management contract. Hawes said it is time to design a new structure, whether it be an advisory committee, park board, friends of the park or some other form of governance. Whichever new governance is eventually implemented, Hawes said one priority will remain the same. “We intend to ensure that the park remains the jewel that we all think it should be and think it is.”
PARK HISTORY Fraser River Heritage Park is a sprawling park overlooking Matsqui Prairie and the Fraser Valley. It is situated on the former site of St. Mary’s Mission and Residential School, founded by Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1861, and retains several heritage sites including the O.M.I. Cemetery and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. After the St. Mary’s school became derelict in the 1960s, the land became the property of the B.C. government and was slated for high-density housing. The Mission Heritage Association was formed in 1979, and the founding president and honorary chairperson Norma Kenney stepped in to lobby the government for the site. The park was created from 44 acres of the original land in 1986, and the Mission Heritage Association continued to develop and promote the facilities. Since 1986, the Norma Kenney House, Flag Plaza, Bell Tower, and Blackberry Kitchen restaurant have been built on the premises. Annual events include the Mission Folk Festival, Envision Twilight Concerts in the summer, and Old Car Sunday, and there are more throughout the year. Portions of the park are available to reserve for private functions.
About $35,000 is spent cleaning up illegal dumped garbage around the community every year. From dirty adult diapers to drywall waste and old car parts, it seems people will leave just about anything on public spaces for district staff to pick up. But this year, the problem appears to be getting worse. Two-thirds of the district’s budget allocated to deal with the issue has already been used up. ‘We’re at $26,000 already with over two-thirds of the year left to go,” said Mission’s public works operations manager Matt Dunham. There are some problem areas in town, like on Stave Lake Road from 7th to 9th Avenue, but the issue mostly lies in the rural areas. Tyler Street, Nelson Street, Dewdney Trunk Road, and Clay Street are areas that have been littered with
Crews work to safely remove a 45-gallon drum filled with an unknown substance. CAROL AUN PHOTO unwanted material recently. Last week district crews found a substantial amount of trash on Gunn Avenue, like someone had been dumping garbage out of their truck while driving down the road, said Dunham. But it’s not just household trash plaguing Mission. The district spends tens of thousands more on illegally dumped garbage that are related to drugs or other chemicals. “Those sites are handled
differently and involve many more different departments,” explained Dunham. “I have seen those (numbers) as high as $60,000.” Several weeks ago, a 45-gallon drum filled with an unknown substance was found at the end of a quiet culde-sac at Silver Creek Industrial Park, but workers were advise by the fire chief not to open it, move it, or dispose of it because its contents had not been ascertained.
Some municipalities are finding “seriously large synthetic drug dumps,” said Fire Chief Larry Watkinson, noting the contents inside could be dangerous. Days later, firefighters determined the drum contained a petroleum-based substance and Dunham received a quote of $7,000 to remove it. If the contents cannot be determined, a hazmat team has to be called in and the bill will increase. About one drum a month is being reported to the district, but crews are finding used motor oil every week on the side of the road, which is alarming Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. “There is so much of it, we have to do something,” said Hawes, who is proposing a reward for information leading to the conviction of anyone responsible. “We’ll be looking to make an example of someone. It just can’t keep happening.”

Hospice gala features gold, glitz and glamour Society’s annual fundraiser surpasses goal Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD
Mission residents had the chance to shine their shoes, don their suits or gowns and enjoy a night of “Gold, Glitz and Glamour” as the Mission Hospice Society hosted its annual gala evening on Saturday night. A sold-out crowd of more than 230 people attended the affair, which featured fine dining, silent and live auctions as well as dancing, games and much more. “We had a goal to sell 224 tickets and we ended up selling 235. This has exceeded all expectations,” said Angel Elias, executive director of Mission Hospice Society. “It has been a glamorous and fantastic evening,” she added. The event was a celebration of 30 years for
the Mission Hospice Society and 10 years for the Christine Morrison Hospice. The ballroom at Mission’s Best Western was packed with supporters enjoying an evening of fun and fine dining. Prizes were given out including cash, a trip to Las Vegas and a ring – donated by Lanka Jewels – worth more than $4,000 While the evening is designed to entertain, it is also the biggest fundraiser of the year for the society. According to Elias, this year’s goal was $45,000, and while the final total has yet to be confirmed, the event has surpassed that goal. “We did very well, we have exceeded our amount from last year,” said Elias. Organizers also honoured some special
guests. Cliff and Marjorie Rock own the home that the society has been using as it’s headquarters since June of 2013. The Rock family has decided to donate the house to hospice, thus giving it a permanent, rent-free space. The official transfer of the property will occur in the coming weeks. Also on hand was Lilian Dudfield, the founding member of the society back in 1985. Dudfield was recognized for her years of service to hospice. “We had a very difficult time in 1985 to get anybody interested in how people died. And what I felt was that people should never die alone,” said Dudfield. She added how thrilled she was to see how many people now support hospice.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
World is not your trash can
We all know littering is a constant problem. People carelessly throw out a used cup, food wrapper, cigarette butt or whatever item they don’t want to hang on to or have lying on the floor of their cars. But while these “litterbugs” are annoying and their refuse quickly builds up to a larger problem, they are slightly less concerning than the increased practice of illegal dumping that seems to be plaguing Mission. In recent years, the district has spent approximately $35,000 per year cleaning up after illegal dumpers. These louts use the district’s rural areas to avoid paying dumping fees. A drive up a little-used road provides the opportunity to empty out the back of a pick-up truck or SUV, resulting in a new, no-cost landfill. At least no cost for them. So far in 2015, the district has already spent $26,000 on clean-up costs (story on page 3) to address illegal dumping.
With eight months remaining in 2015 – and if the dumping trend continues – this year’s clean-up budget will skyrocket to around $80,000. All taxpayers are paying for this because some individuals don’t want to pay legal dumping fees. Even worse is the high expense of cleaning up non-household trash – hazardous materials such as oil, chemicals and drug paraphernalia. This has to be stopped. The public needs to get on board and be vigilant. It is everyone’s responsibility to report dumping when they see it. More importantly, it’s the district’s job to prosecute those who get caught. Mayor Hawes has suggested a reward system for people who report dumpsters. That’s a good idea, as long as the offenders are hit with a large financial penalty for their crime. Recycling commercials and kind words won’t solve the problem. Nailing offenders in the wallet will.
Do you agree with the district’s decision to end its parks agreement with the Mission Heritage Association? To answer, go to the Home page of our website: www.missioncityrecord.com

Coast Guard hysteria sinks lower Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views The Vancouver media’s frantic coverage of the Great Bunker Spill of 2015 has just about run out of fuel. By late last week, the usually serious Globe and Mail was reduced to quizzing a U.S. expert who had at first told the CBC he thought the spill response was pretty good. But then he heard that it might have taken up to 12 hours until the leaking grain ship was completely under control, which would be not so good. This U.S. expert admitted he has not “followed the Vancouver spill very closely,” and was basically speculating. But that’s OK, because the main purpose of this media frenzy is to feed the established narrative that the Harper government is gutting the Coast Guard while trying to ramp up heavy oil shipments to Asia. Yeah, that makes sense. A University of
Toronto philosophy prof recently suggested that Stephen Harper likes war. Maybe he likes oil spills too. A retired captain from the now-closed Kitsilano Coast Guard station became the latest of a series of disgruntled ex-employees and union bosses to serve as the media’s go-to critics. He contradicted Coast Guard management at every turn, dismissing them as political appointees with little operational experience. His claims about loss of spill response capability from Kitsilano are questionable at best. There was no talk of spill response when Kitsilano closed two years ago, because it was a search and rescue station. Former B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair held almost daily news conferences as it closed. People are going to drown, warned a parade of union spokespeople. It’s been two years, and nobody has. Premier Christy Clark and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson were quick to summon TV cameras as oil-sheen angst spread through condo towers. They declared the Coast Guard response a failure before they had any real understanding of it. Unifor, the union representing Coast Guard employees, has vowed a full-scale election
advertising attack on the Conservatives this year. On federal budget day, Unifor protested the closure of the Ucluelet Coast Guard ship monitoring station. Similar stations in Van-
People are going to drown, warned a parade of union spokespeople. couver and Comox are also closing this year, replaced by a new monitoring system run from Prince Rupert and Victoria. I asked Industry Minister James Moore, the federal minister responsible for B.C., if this is a reduction in service. He said 1970s-era ship tracking equipment is being replaced with a new system that has already been deployed on the East Coast, to improve safety. “These fears were also raised back in the ’60s and ’70s, when lighthouses were de-staffed,” Moore said. “I remember people saying, “Oh my God, this is going to be the
end.’ And it turned out to be complete nonsense.” Unifor operatives rushed to the media again last week with dire news of a half-hour outage of this new system, portraying this as evidence of a high-tech disaster waiting to happen. (Ships were told to monitor an old-school emergency radio channel for that uneventful half hour.) What the union is really doing is ramping up its election propaganda, and intensifying efforts to protect redundant positions that are being replaced by new technology. There was a similar media campaign last year targeting the consolidation of Veterans’ Affairs into Service Canada offices. There are serious problems with services to veterans, but union featherbedding will not help them. The B.C. government is also introducing digital technology, eliminating hundreds of paper-pushing jobs in the process, with a mostly realistic response from unions. But in this federal election year, realism will be in short supply. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Hospice offered Support for development amazing care Last fall a friend of mine lost a valiant battle against the big ‘C’, cancer. Joan (not her real name) had spent the final months of her life being cared for at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission. She had occupied the tiniest room situated directly across from the elevator, always refusing a more spacious room when it was offered to her. Joan preferred instead to observe the comings and goings of everyone who passed through its doors. That is not to say that Joan actually needed a diversion, hers was a revolving door of visitors from the extensive number of friends she had been blessed with over her long life. She was a woman who gave generously of her time and compassion towards others. From my vantage point opposite her bed, I could see the nurses’ station where the busy staff completed some of the numerous tasks required of them. When the pain became unbearable and Joan needed to ring the alarm button for assistance, I saw the nurse drop everything she was doing on several occasions and was truly amazed by the speed of her arrival. The purpose of this letter is to convey my sincere admiration and thanks for the exceptional care Joan received during her extended stay, not only from the nurses, but also the cheerful staff who brought her meals, and everyone I met there. Kudos to all of you! Connie Eberhardt Mission
Re: Proposed McTaggart rezoning and subdivision applications. I’m writing in support of the proposed rezoning and subdivision proposal by the developers on McTaggart Street. The planning process with the District of Mission staff for this development proposal went through 32 revisions from the original proposal by this developer in order to address the concerns of the District of Mission staff, the neighbourhood and general public. When a developer is prepared to develop property within the District of Mission and in accordance with the Official Community Plan, I believe we as a community should work with them. This developer is prepared to invest approximately $2 million in offsite sanitary sewer main infrastructure and $4.5 million in onsite infrastructures. With the possibility of failing septic fields in the area and/or along the sanitary corridor, this allows for the option of an

SAVORING THE PRESENT The pace of modern life is truly dizzying. And when we combine this frenetic pace with the fact that most of us have too much going on in our lives, it is no wonder that we rarely savor the present moment. To make matters even worse, we spend most of our time ruminating about the past and planning for the future, and thus, we ignore the only time that is truly here, i.e., the present. The past is gone; it no longer exists. The future is not yet here; it is just as illusory as the past. The only time that truly exists is the present moment, this slender knife-edge between the past and the future. And unfortunately, we too often spoil this wonderful moment by infusing it with recollections of the past or anticipation of what is to come. So, how does one go about savoring the present? First, slow down. Second, be mindful of what you are doing or feeling. Become totally absorbed in what you are doing, and do just one thing at a time. Finally, share your experience with someone.

in being a desirable location and has homes that exceed the median value of homes in the Hatzic area. To the best of my knowledge, none of these past developments created a detriment to the Hatzic neighbourhood in any way. My experience is, that it is change that people object to, but decide to call it something else other than that. Petitions are circulated with incorrect information. This happens to be the last large piece of land in the Hatzic area and its highest and best use is being proposed. All of the Hatzic Bench area has been developed, a piece at a time, and I’m sure each application was met with some sort of opposition. If council declined every development proposal that met opposition, there would be a lot less people enjoying the Hatzic Bench community lifestyle. KC McPherson Mission

None of the forgoing includes their land cost. What Mr. Toor and Mr. Tiegen are proposing is not out of the ordinary for the Hatzic community. The same size lots have been developed on Tindall Terrace just west of Draper and also Riverbend Estates located on Coleman Street north of the Lougheed Highway. Mr. Toor and I developed Rockridge Estates which caused a neighbourhood controversy but the council of the day saw their way to approving our application and the subdivision resulted

Marketing Silverdale lands Investors, developers learn about opportunities Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
About 70 per cent of growth in southwestern B.C. will happen in the Fraser Valley, according to the Urban Development Institute, which hosted a breakfast meeting in Mission this week to discuss development opportunities. Morgan Dyer, senior vice-president at Colliers International and a speaker at the event, presented a video marketing the 1,100 acres of land for sale in Silverdale. The properties are currently owned by development companies Genstar and Madison, and form the largest tract of consolidated land available for development in the Lower Mainland. Dyer noted housing starts generally reflect interest rates, and single family detached homes are still the highest form of housing in demand. In 1989, there were
1,200 houses built in the Fraser Valley, but in 2014, with low interest rates, there were only about 400 constructed. It’s only a matter of time when interest rates and housing starts will increase, he said. “The trend we need to be aware of is to forecast where development will happen,” said Dyer. Trends Dyer identified included more mixed use developments with smaller units, and increased building along transit lines, like the new SkyTrain tracks in Coquitlam. He noted Asian developers coming to the B.C. market are here to stay and they should be welcomed with “open arms.” The local industry needs to be innovative and think outwardly. The future of Mission has been tied to the Genstar properties in Silverdale for more than 20 years, said Mayor Randy Hawes.
“But there’s a lot more to Mission than those properties.” More development should’ve come to the community many years ago, added Hawes, who said he and the current council are committed to removing roadblocks in order to grow the community. “But I have a great fear that if we develop without a job base or industrial land, we will pour commuters on the highway every day, and we’ll have a problem.” That’s why Hawes wants to take the properties west of the Silver Creek Industrial Park out of the Agricultural Land Reserve. “It’s perfect for industrial use,” said Hawes, pointing out it’s close to the highway, rail, and the U.S. border. According to Hawes, there are many manufacturing plants in Metro Vancouver that want to expand, but are prohibited by land costs

and availability. Westack Development’s Ole Bakstad, an experienced industrial land developer in Mission, agrees. He has built several buildings at Mission’s new industrial park and said they are being rented out as quickly as they are going up. “It’s important to have a good industrial base,” advised Bakstad. “Maple Ridge has kind of exhausted its industrial land.” Investing in industrial buildings is a long-term project, said Bakstad, who doesn’t expect to see a quick return on his investment. “I’m not making a profit on my buildings on my property, but my son might. I’m building for the future.” The event was sponsored by the District of Mission and attended by close to 90 people.

in bed Few gestures of affection create such a stir as presenting Mom with breakfast in bed. On Mother’s Day, treating her to breakfast in bed can get her big day off on the right foot. The surprise of breakfast in bed is almost as important as the presentation. Make sure everyone keeps the secret and rises early enough to prepare the meal. Delegate some tasks to kids. A young child may be able to arrange flowers in a vase, while a slightly older child may be more adept at slicing toast or helping to flip pancakes. The breakfast should be a joint effort so that the person treated to breakfast knows everyone involved cared enough to pitch in.

Think outside the box There is no perfect answer to the question “What do I get Mom for Mother’s Day?” However try thinking outside the box when shopping for a gift. If you want to try something different this year, don’t go for the usual flowers or chocolate, get something Mom can use. Ask yourself, what does your mother like to do? If she is active and enjoys keeping in shape, perhaps a gym membership is an option. Or, maybe she would appreciate an opportunity to try yoga. Mission’s Iron Lotus Yoga is offering special deals for Mother’s Day. If you want another idea, maybe buying mom tickets to an upcoming concert or play might be the answer. Even if you have outgrown Mom’s musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town.

Picking the perfect gift Many men think of jewelry as a gift for their girlfriend or wife, but remember, Mom likes it too. Finding a special item to tell your Mom how much you appreciate all she has done for you is as simple as visiting your local store. Whether it be a bracelet, earrings or a necklace, Mom will love her special gift. Lanka Jewels in Mission has a huge selection to choose from to fit any taste or budget. When purchasing jewelry, remember to think about what your mother likes, not what you want. Her style may be less, or more, extravagant than yours. The best option is to keep it simple. Ask yourself what kind of jewelry does your Mom like? Does she wear a lot of rings? Or are bracelets more her style? Are her ears pierced?

Take a look at some of her other pieces of jewelry in order to get some creative ideas. If all of her jewelry is gold, then silver is likely a bad option. If she doesn’t have any bracelets or broaches, then she probably doesn’t like to wear them. When buying such a personal gift, it is better to play it safe than sorry. Pick something more generic. Simple gold bands or something with her birthstone may be the best way to go. To make the item even more special, think about getting it engraved. A short, personal message can mean more than the present itself. If you can’t decide on a piece of jewelry, then maybe a watch is the answer. There is a huge variety of women’s watches to choose from, be it practical or dainty, functional or decorative.

pampering Whether she’s still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, Mom deserves our best efforts come Mother’s Day. And while traditional gifts, like flowers and chocolate, might make for thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts, those who want to go the extra mile for Mom this year can consider other options. If Mom is still as active as ever, then a day of pampering at a nearby spa is sure to please. Many spas offer packages, especially around Mother’s Day, that make a full-on spa treatment a more affordable gift. Men and women can even accompany Mom on her trip and reap the rewards of being such a thoughtful son or daughter. Mission’s Natural Reflextions Day Spa is offering May specials that any Mom would love. From pedicures to a hot stone massage, you mother will love this relaxing idea. Another great way to pamper your mother would be to get her nails done. Mission Nails is offering both manicures and pedicures as well as gel nails and even eyelash extensions. This year, why not give Mom a chance to relax and be pampered.

District sets sights on stopping offensive odours Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Foul fumes will not be tolerated in Mission. Mission council passed three read-
ings this week to add a definition for offensive odours in its noise regulation bylaw. The move is aimed at marijuana grow operations that pro-
duce offensive odours, which limit the enjoyment of the outdoors for other residents in the neighbourhood. But the bylaw will also apply to other noxious
smells, such as those emitted by garbage containers, restaurant venting stacks and paint booths. According to a report from Mission’s direc-
tor of development services, Mike Younie, a couple of problem sites have been identified, but the district will mostly be relying on residents to doc-
Spring Cleanup Week & Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day Spring cleanup week this year is from May 4 to 8. Single-family residents can put out an additional two cubic metres of waste on their regular collection day. One cubic meter is the same as six bags of waste, or one stove, or one armchair. Anything beyond the limit of two cubic meters will be left behind. All materials must be manageable by two people. Please do not pile materials loosely and promptly clean up any leftover debris.
• Construction, demolition & renovation wastes, including drywall, flooring materials, wood debris, fencing & roofing, bricks, rocks, toilets & windows; • Hazardous materials, including toxic, flammable, corrosive and petroleum products, paint, pesticides, used oil and antifreeze & fluorescent lights; • Bio-hazardous materials, including needles & animal wastes.
Mission residents (proof required) can drop off residential hazardous waste at the Mission Recycling Depot on Saturday, May 9, from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. No commercial or agricultural products will be accepted.
ument the problem over several weeks and report it. Coun. Jenny Stevens said each person has a different interpretation of what an offensive odour is and worried the new rule would invite “neighbourhood fights. Younie agreed interpretations are personal, but noted action could be taken if three people document the same odour in the same neighbourhood. “This is almost exclusively because we have so many grow ops venting on a regular basis, said Mayor Randy Hawes. “We have dozens of residents who say they can’t sit in their backyard and enjoy the summer because of their neighbour’s venting. Similar sentiments have been expressed from people in industrial areas too, Hawes added, noting there are filters growers can use to purify the air. In 2013, there were more than 700 Health
Canada licensed marijuana grow operations in Mission, according to the district. Those licenses were supposed to be phased out in favour of large commercial grow ops last April, but that has been held up by a Supreme Court challenge. The municipal bylaw, which is considered to be a temporary fix until a comprehensive good neighbour bylaw is developed, will not affect any operations on agricultural land. Younie noted staff will try to work with the odour offenders before issuing a ticket for $500 each day of non-compliance. Mission council began investigating an anti-odour bylaw in February after Langley Township successfully developed a similar rule. The first three readings of the bylaw was passed unanimously, but council will have to formally adopt it at a later date.

now. For Cook, music has been a journey. After two decades of crisscrossing the world in his restless pursuit of inspiration, innovation and collabo-
ration, this virtuoso changed course for his ninth studio album One World. Rather than exotic locales, he stayed home in his studio. Rather than a foreign legion of per-
formers, he relied on his own devices. And rather than exploring myriad cul-de-sacs of music he united them. The album pivots between worlds — past and future,

Mission man honoured posthumously Frank Soeten wins volunteer award from Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brother Frank Soeten and Little Brother Hunter pose for a fun photo last year. SUBMITTED PHOTO
Mission resident Frank Soeten was posthumously honoured with a volunteer award at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley’s annual general meeting, held April 22, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the community of Mission. Soeten was matched with his Little Brother
Hunter in December 2012, not long after the young boy said to his mother: “All I want for Christmas is a Big Brother.” Soeten didn’t come with gift wrap and bows, but he was definitely Hunter’s favourite gift that Christmas. He taught Hunter how to use tools and build a doghouse, reminded him

Stringing of the transmission line (conductors) along the new transmission towers for the Interior to Lower Mainland Transmission Project has begun. Helicopters are required for this work. The contractor has obtained the necessary permits and permissions and is in compliance with Transport Canada requirements. Conductor ends will need to be joined with the use of an implosive connector that is a metallic sleeve with a small charge in it for each conductor. Using safe and controlled methods, the sleeves are detonated which compresses (welds) the conductor ends together. This split-second process will create several flashes with smoke and very loud bangs. Traffic control measures will be in place as needed. Work hours will conform to municipal bylaws.

to use his manners and encouraged him to step outside his comfort zone. He passed along his quiet wisdom over regular breakfast outings and truly changed a young life over the course of two years by being a consistent and caring male role model. Soeten passed away suddenly at the end of January, but his legacy will live on in the child he mentored. Last week, friends of Soeten organized a memorial motorcycle ride, raising over $800 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters programming in Mission. Mentoring co-ordinator Cassie Silva hopes that Mission residents will be touched by Soeten’s story, and will consider volunteering in his memory. “Our waitlist of Mission boys is pretty much maxed out, because we have a
significant shortage of male volunteers,” she said. “Some of these boys have been waiting years for a Big Brother. They just want someone to do ‘guy stuff’ with, like toss a ball around or go fishing. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available for both men and women, ranging from just once a month to once a week, so I would encourage everyone to at least look into it and see how being a mentor could fit into their schedule if they want to a make a difference in our community.” Hunter’s mom Kelly said she has “watched my boy transition from a shy, timid, non-trusting angry child into a fine young man. Frank quickly became my co-pilot, helping me mold him, teaching my son to be the man of the house, how to treat women, how to respect and
love his sisters, how to control his anger and how to be a better person. How to dream big, work hard, stay focused and see the good in everyone.” She’s proud of the man her son has come to be. “Frank has taught him loyalty, compassion, empathy, courage, to face his fears and finally to let go. I have no regrets for signing my son up for a mentor because what Frank taught my son cannot be bought, planned or scheduled, it was a bond that was truly felt by both of their hearts. I believe Frank will continue to push Hunter to soar to great levels, he will guide him on the right path always and forever.” For more information on Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley visit www. mentoringworks.ca or call 604-820-3337.

Genius Hour hits Hatzic elementary
WWW.GALLERY7THEATRE.COM
If you could learn about anything in the world, what would it be? Students at Hatzic elementary researched their interests one hour a week during the school’s Genius Hour. Children in grades 3 to 6 and kindergarten studied a range of topics from catapults, cooking, and chess to bees, robotics, and even endangered species. They presented their findings at the Passion Fair a few weeks later. “Students were very excited and enjoyed sharing new discoveries with their peers,” said Hatzic vice-principal Sharon Widdows.

The fair, which featured close to 200 projects, was attended by other classes in the school and parents. “Genius Hour is a project-based learning strategy cropping up in classrooms worldwide,” said Widdows. “While discussion about personalized learning has initiated much conversation among educators about how to tailor learning to individual students, the notion of Genius Hour was pioneered by Google executives, who theorized that allowing employees time during the week to work on projects of their choosing would increase produc-

Saint Martin’s University on Feb. 14. It was the third highest single game point total in Simon Fraser history. Chambers started 113 of 114 games over her four-year career. Earlier this year Chambers was honoured by the university as co-winner of the SFU Female Athlete of the Year award along with middle-distance runner Lindsey Butterworth. Another Missionite to receive honours on the weekend was Joby McKenzie, who was inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame. A graduate of Hatzic Secondary (she led the team to the B.C. High School AA Championship in 1994 and was named high school player of the year), McKenzie was recognized for her outstanding career at SFU. She led Simon Fraser to four trips to the NAIA National Championships during her time with the Clan. McKenzie was inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame, joining her dad Ken McKenzie who was inducted in 2008.

The SE EcoBoost package ($1,600) adds fog lamps, a rear spoiler, a full body styling kit, and 17-inch machined alloy wheels. The Winter Package ($700 – not that I really put it to good use at this time of year) adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, all weather floor mats and a power/heated mirror. While visibility is pretty good from all angles, the Reverse Sensing System ($700) can always lend a helping hand. Overall, I quite liked this sedan. The Focus is comfortable, compact and certainly has a convenient engine size for the city. When considering the Focus with the 1.0L EcoBoost, it’s only available on the SE trim (MSRP of $18,849) and comes as part of the aforementioned EcoBoost package ($1,600.) The price as tested on this vehicle comes in at $23,315 (which includes the $1,565 destination charge.) Write to alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Euro-style crossover is roomy and thrifty at the pump (AJAC), when introduced for the 2008 model year. Good consumer reliability ratings and excellent crash safety performance have helped make Rogue a solid and smart used vehicle choice. It`s also typically priced a little lower than more established competitors from Honda or Toyota... another plus for prospective used Rogue buyers. under normal operating conditions. There’s also a locked 50/50 mode, which is useful on snow covered or slippery road surfaces. Rogue’s rear independent multi-link suspension is also interesting. In addition to offering a better ride than a conventional strut type suspension, it’s a more compact design, which allows more rear cargo space inside. Changes for 2012 included a new sport mode that gives the transmission a more aggressive shift pattern, at the push of a button. The SL trim also received Nissan’s superb Around-View-Monitor system. This clever parking aid can provide what looks like an overhead (bird’s eye) picture of the Rogue via four wide-angle cameras. Not much changed for a 2013 model year which carried over into 2014, until an all-new (second generation) Rogue got a mid-model year introduction. Although the same length the outgoing model, this new Rogue has a longer wheelbase and it`s taller. A larger interior also allowed an optional 3rd row of seats. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

CARTER Margaret (nee West) Dec. 15, 1932 ~ April 19, 2015
It is with the greatest of sadness our family announces the passing of Margaret Carter, our beloved Mom, Grama, Great Grama, Partner and Friend. Mom passed peacefully surrounded by her family, at the age of 82. She will be greatly missed by all lucky enough to have been touched by her loving heart, fun nature and kindness. Mom loved music, dancing, adventure and friendships which she truly cherished. Mom was the most creative lady; a fine seamstress, artist and a truly talented oil painter. Her beautiful smile, sharp wit and sense of humour will be deeply missed by all of us.
KRAWZIK APPELDOORN Joe It is with deep, profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, Dad, Grandpa, and brother. Joe is survived by his wife, Karin, daughter Donna (Bruce) Kraakman and son Ken (Linda); brothers Wim (Pacita), Hank (Pauline), Gerry (Sharon); sisters Eefie Eden and Gerda (Bob) Phillips, and sister-inlaw Shirley Appeldoorn. Surviving also are grandchildren Clarke Appeldoorn and Jacey, Jenelle, and Joel Kraakman. Joe was predeceased by his brother, Bill, and grandson, Reid. Joe was born in the Netherlands, son of Willem and Heintje Appeldoorn. The family came to Canada - Terrace, BC - in 1948, when Joe was 12 years of age. In 1954 the family began dairy farming in Abbotsford. Joe met Karin and they married in 1960. They moved back to Terrace where the children were born. Joe began his career in trucking and bulldozing in Terrace, a career that spanned 35 years. In 1968 he moved his family to Mission where he carried on and became well known within the construction industry as a competent, proficient operator. Joe took great pride in his reputation and integrity involved in his business. He had an ‘old school’ work ethic. In his leisure time, Joe enjoyed fishing, family camping trips, winters in Arizona, gardening, and ‘tinkering’ in his workshop. Joe was also so very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. In 1994 Joe and Karin retired to Armstrong where they made their home for 19 years. In 2013 Joe and Karin moved back to Abbotsford to be closer to family. In spite of Joe’s ongoing health issues, Joe’s strong will enabled him to enjoy his later years. He will be in our hearts, with love, forever. We ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army. A celebration of his life was held on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford, BC.
