Gold Pan City implementing strategy for physician recruitment A partnership in Quesnel is set to start the implementation of a locally driven physician recruitment strategy. The main points of the strategy include: • developing a new local primary care clinic for unattached patients; • supporting social integration and spousal support for new recruits and their families; • ensuring Northern Health and physicians enhance the partnership with the City of Quesnel, MLA for Cariboo North Coralee Oakes, the Cariboo Regional District, and Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District; and • executing a communication strategy to engage the broader community. “The action plan is a

great example of what can happen when we work together and it will play an important role in the recruitment of physicians,” Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said. “The April meeting allowed the group to examine best practices in physician recruitment and integrate local ideas. I look forward to working hard alongside the community to demonstrate to physicians that Quesnel is a great place to live and work.” Northern Health is connecting with physicians who have expressed interest in relocating to Quesnel. The process includes inviting the interested physician and their families to the community for a tour of the medical

facilities and amenities. “As physicians come to Quesnel for site visits, we want to make sure they have a fantastic experience so they make the choice to practice in Quesnel,” mayor Bob Simpson said. “I would ask members of the community to join us by positively promoting Quesnel on social media and in the community to show the reasons we love to live and work here.” “The Cariboo Regional Hospital District has been proud to provide funding health care projects, with the latest being the renovation to the pharmacy,” Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District Chair John Massier said. “As a board we want to continue supporting health care in the Cariboo

including support the recruitment efforts to our wonderful region.” The new primary care clinic for unattached patients will be developed by the summer to meet the needs of patients in Quesnel. The primary care clinic will feature an inter-professional team that will work collaboratively to provide care for patients. While the clinic is still in development, members of the team may include visiting and permanent physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, primary care nurses, and mental health and addiction clinicians. Support will also be provided by other medical professionals including dietitians, pharmacists and home support.

Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber Jane Smith! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.

“We have heard from physicians that they are interested in working with interdisciplinary teams, and the new primary care clinic will provide another option for physicians wanting to practice in Quesnel,” Northern Health Quesnel health service administrator Debbie Strang said. “While recruitment activities are underway, it will also provide unattached patients in Quesnel access care.” There are a number of initiatives underway to promote the opportunities in Quesnel. These include highlighting the work and lifestyle available to residents with videos of Quesnel physicians that will be located on the Northern Health physi-

cian recruitment website. Northern Health’s physician recruitment team will also be attending seven recruitment events nationally and internationally to showcase the opportunities to physicians seeking a change of location, keeping close contact with potential recruits, and working closely with Health Match B.C. “We have a great team of physicians that are working in Quesnel, and we will continue to work hard for our patients in the community,” Dr. Helene Smith said. “I really enjoy living and working in Quesnel. For me it is about showing physicians interested in Quesnel all of the great benefits the community has to offer.”

Mother’s Day history E

very May women around the world are celebrated for their sacrifices and contributions to the family. With all that mom does for her children, it would seem like the concept of honouring her would be ages old. However, it really wasn’t until relatively recently that a celebration of mothers was instituted. In ancient Greece individuals honoured Rhea, mother of the gods. Christians also celebrated Mary the mother of God. But it wasn’t until the 1900s before the general mothering population was celebrated in earnest. Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis was a young Appalachian homemaker who, beginning in 1858, attempted to improve sanitation and nursing

procedures through women’s clubs and what she called “Mothers Friendship Day.” It wasn’t Anne Marie, but rather her daughter, Anna Jarvis, who created the Mother’s Day that we celebrate today. Anna spent many years caring for her aging and ailing mother. Anne Marie died on May 9, 1905 and Anna missed her terribly. Anna noticed that many children failed to respect and honor their mothers while they were alive and it wasn’t until after they died these children recognized what they had lost in their parent. She intended to start a Mother’s Day to honour mothers. In 1907, Anna Jarvis attempted to establish Mother’s Day to “honour mothers, living and dead.” She started the campaign

to establish a national Mother’s Day. Together with her friends, Jarvis started a letter-writing campaign to urge ministers, businessmen and congressmen to declare a national Mother’s Day holiday. Her efforts paid off. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated on May 10, 1908 and honoured the late Anne Marie Reeves Jarvis. After this initial celebration, Mother’s Day caught on. The Mother’s Day International Association was established on December 12, 1912, to promote and encourage meaningful observances of the event. And on May 9, 1914, a presidential proclamation declared that every year the second Sunday in May would be observed as Mother’s Day.

are some ways to set the day apart. • Create a handmade card with personalized sentiments that reflect the unique relationship with this special woman. This can mean more than a pre-purchased card that may not offer the right words. • Find out her interests and spend a day doing entirely what she wants to do. It doesn’t necessarily have to take place on

Mother’s Day. • Treat her to a special dinner. Ask about favorite foods and create a meal at home. • Find something you both enjoy and then go and do that. Maybe you met up due to a hobby or interest. Remember the first day you met and reminisce by heading to that place for a celebration. • Have an extended family fiesta. Host a

Mother’s Day party at home and single out all the special women in attendance. Serve cocktails and enjoy the time spent together. Mother’s Day is a special time of the year to honour not only a person’s mom but also any other notable woman in his or her life. The holiday can be customized any way a person sees fit just make it special.

Celebrating more than moms Every spring individuals celebrate their mothers on Mother’s Day. It has evolved from a day to honour mothers to one that recognizes all special women. There are many reasons a person may want to honour a woman that is not his or her mother. Perhaps the person’s own mother has passed away or is not prominent in this individual’s life. Maybe there is a grandmother or aunt with whom one is especially close. There may be a teacher or mentor that has touched the life of a person in a special way. Although Mother’s Day is built around giving thanks to mom, it’s certainly acceptable to thank women in addition to dear old Mom. Furthermore, one needn’t wait until a specific day in May to honour a notable woman. This can be done all year long with certain gestures and sentiments. For those who are celebrating all women on Mother’s Day, here

Barkerville Historic Town is gearing up for an eventful 2015 season filled with education, entertainment and three sesquicentennial celebrations. These celebrations include the 150th anniversaries (1865 – 2015) of Barkerville’s Cariboo Sentinel newspaper, the Cariboo Amateur Dramatic Association’s first public performance (in a saloon) and completion of the legendary Cariboo Waggon Road from Yale to Williams Creek. By 1865, English boatman-turned-Cariboo miner Billy Barker’s namesake city was considered by some to be the largest north of San Francisco and west of Chicago. It was a wooden metropolis in the wilderness of British Columbia’s Central

Interior and before long Barkerville’s multicultural community was making culture of its own. The Cariboo Sentinel newspaper printed its first edition in June 1865. One week after that, the Cariboo Amateur Dramatic Association presented its first play. The Cariboo Waggon Road from Yale to Richfield was completed in November, bringing more population, industry and opportunity to the goldfields. It also paved the way for Barkerville’s physical preservation. Declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 1924 and later a provincial heritage property in 1958, Barkerville is now the largest “living museum” in western North America. Tens of thousands of people from all

over the world still travel the Gold Rush Trail every year and, in doing so, help keep the spirit of B.C.’s earliest days prosperous and full of life. But that’s not all. The Royal BC Museum’s (RBCM) 2015 exhibit, Gold Rush: El Dorado in BC, will bring tales of unfathomable Barkerville riches (along with Billy Barker’s very own pocket watch) to nearly half a million museum visitors in Victoria between May and October before heading out to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec and several additional ports of call in 2016 and beyond (www. royalbcmuseum.bc.ca). “We are very pleased to have partnered with the RBCM on its Gold Rush exhibit in 2015, and look

forward to future collaborations,” says Barkerville chief executive officer Ed Coleman, who will sign an historic memorandum of understanding between the two institutions later this summer. “As bookends to B.C.’s Gold Rush Trail, Victoria and Barkerville have been integrally connected for more than 150 years. By exploring and promoting this relationship, both provincially and internationally, we bring our communities closer together despite our perceived geographical distance.” Never one to miss a party, Barkerville Brewing Co. of Quesnel has produced a special Mucho Oro lager to commemorate the RBCM’s Gold Rush: El Dorado in BC exhibit and partial proceeds from

the sale of each bottle will benefit both the museum and the Barkerville Heritage Trust, the stewards of Barkerville’s modern-day legacy. With its unique streetscape of more than 130 heritage buildings, authentic displays, satellite museums, restaurants, shops and accommodations Barkerville still has so much to explore. With three significant anniversaries at hand, this season looks like the perfect time to plan a visit. For more information about Barkerville’s 2015 season of sesquicentennials, which starts May 14 and runs through Sept. 27, visit http://www.barkerville.ca, or phone Judy Mooring, Visitor Experiences, at 1-888-994-3332, ext. 29.

British Columbia’s communities are shaped by those who live in them, and especially by the extraordinary individuals who contribute in many areas such as health, education, multiculturalism, sports and recreation, community volunteerism, arts and culture, environment, philanthropy, and youth or seniors’ leadership, among others. In B.C. we often celebrate these individuals through numerous awards, including the B.C. Community Achievement Awards, the Citizen of the Year Award, and the Business Excellence Awards, among others. Each one of these exemplifies a specific facet of the community that has made outstanding contributions as a volunteer or in the course of their work that have gone above and beyond to strengthen their communities. Tommy Moffat from Quesnel is one of the 35 recipients that received the B.C. Achievement Award for his many contributions. The decades of dedicated service that Mr. Moffat has provided to our community from the Quesnel and District Museum and Archives, to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #94, and to the Quesnel Rod and Gun Club, are just a few of the organizations that he helped serve over the years. Recently, the 35 recipients of the 2015 British Columbia Community Achievement Awards were recognized in a formal presentation ceremony at Government House in Victoria. Another exceptional citizen that deserves to be recognized is Florence White, who received the 2015 Citizen of Year award in Quesnel for her very impressive volunteer dedication to our hospital, the Lions Club and a number of other organizations. You are shining example of what each of us can do to be more engaged in our community. If we could all take a page out of their books, our communities would thrive, and become even more spectacular. In fact you can help out with all kinds of great organizations by visiting Volunteer Quesnel on Facebook to learn about volunteer opportunities in Quesnel.

Knowing water related risks

E

xamined in the right light, statistics can teach us a great deal. For example, are you aware that every year in Canada more than 500 people die in water-related fatalities? How about the fact that fewer than 100 of those occur in bath tubs, swimming pools or as the result of motor vehicle accidents (where a car becomes submerged in water)? Did you know that about twice as many people – some 170 annually – drown while engaged in recreational boating activities? (Swimming and other in- or near-water activities also claim significant numbers each year). Have you ever considered how, nationally, alcohol consumption is a major contributor to the annual drowning death toll; that it is proven or suspected in 27 per cent of swimming deaths and more than 50 per centof those related to boating? And pardon the pun, but here’s some

sobering data: it is estimated that if every person involved in on, in or near-water (such as fishing from a dock or even children playing on the beach) activities were to wear an approved life-saving device, drowning deaths could be reduced by upwards of 90 per cent. While it is worthwhile to give consideration to where you fit on the “risk” scale – males between 15 and 44 are, statistically, at the highest risk – do not allow yourself to become complacent simply because you are outside that age range or female. When it comes to British Columbia specifically, we can at least begin with some good news: our province’s rate of water-related fatalities showed a drop of 14 per cent in the most recent coroner’s data collection years, 2007 – 2011, over the previous five-year period. And while that’s both positive and encouraging, the Province’s average drowning rate (1.8

CAPSULE COMMENTS

with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm) When you visit your doctor about a problem (like pain), be a good reporter. Plan how you will give your doctor information. The better reporter you are, the better the chance your doctor can help. If it is pain, use descriptive words like “stabbing”, “sharp”, “dull”, achy”. It is sometimes helpful to write down your comments so you don’t miss anything and it saves time as well. Pharmacists put a “shake well” label on some liquid prescriptions. It’s important to heed that label. Some liquids are suspensions and the medication may settle to the bottom of the bottle. Shaking will distribute the medication evenly and ensure you receive the right dose. Children’s liquid antibiotics are a good example. “More is better” is something that doesn’t always apply to drugs. Drugs often reach a peak level of effectiveness at a certain dose and taking more will often not give better results. But side effects can occur at higher doses. Follow your doctor’s orders regarding how much medication to take. Protect your teeth by keeping certain foods to a minimum. Even soft drinks and sports drinks contain acids that can corrode tooth enamel. Dried fruit can stick to teeth surfaces. Some contain extra sugar, too. Even yummy potato chips get into tooth crevices and stay. It’s hard to avoid some of these foods and drinks but brushing soon after eating them will avoid tooth decay and other problems. There are many rumors circulating about a potential exodus of doctors from Quesnel and the impact this may have on our emergency services at the hospital and for those with chronic care needs. per 100,000) still remains higher than that of Canada as a whole (1.5 per 100,000). As of yet we do not have the final number of drowning deaths for last year, but here are the stats for the data collection years mentioned plus 2012 – 13: 2007, 75; 2008, 89; 2009, 81; 2010, 85; 2011, 59; 2012, 61; 2013, 74.

As you can see, even with the lower number of fatalities in 2011/2012, the number of drowning deaths in BC still averages almost 75 per year. In our next keeping safe report, some perspective on these numbers The Quesnel Power and Sail Squadron is proud to promote Boating and Water

NATIONAL HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE WEEK

National Hospice Palliative Care Week is May 3 - 9, 2015 MYTH: Receiving hospice palliative care means you’ll die soon. FACT: Hospice palliative care is not just for the final days or months of life. It’s holistic

approach that includes pain and sympton management, caregiver support, spirtual care, bereavement and much more. Some supporting statistics: Over three in ten Canadians (32%) personally suffer from a chronic illness while four in ten (39%) have a sufferer in their immediate family. When taken together, six in ten Canadians (57%) either personally suffer from a chronic illness or have a sufferer in their immediate family. Chronic diseases account for 70% of all deaths.

MYTH: Hospice palliative care is just for seniors. FACT: Hospice palliative care is provided to people of all ages - from infancy to adulthood.

As a matter of fact, Canada has six hospices dedicated to pediatric palliative care. Adults in their primealso die, and we need to ensure that them and their families are properly supported and prepared for the end-of-life, no matter their age. Some supporting statistics: Pediatric palliative care programs in Canada care for a diverse population of patients with a wide range of age and disease conditions. Only a small percentage of children who die, however, receive services from these dedicated programs.

MYTH: I can only get palliative care in a hospital. FACT: Palliative care services are offered in many places, including hospitals, long term care facilities, and hospices and in your own home. Some supporting statistics: When asked, most people have indicated that they would prefer to die at home in the presence of loved ones yet almost 70% of Canadian deaths occur in a hospital. Ontario found that betweeen 20 and 50% of people on waiting lists for residential long-term care could age safely and cost-effectively at home if some basic services were accessible. And hospice palliative care services and treatment can lead to better outcomes, such as improvement of symptoms and reduced caregiver burden, while reducing cost.

CITY COUNCIL NEWS

The number of family doctors practicing in Quesnel will be reduced over the next 18 months, for a number of reasons; some as a result of retirements, most from lifestyle choices. It’s important to realize that most rural communities are experiencing a similar phenomenon. Our situation is not unique and it is not a result of fear that the mountain pine beetle will cause our community to “die.” Shortly after I moved to Quesnel we had a similar “exodus” of doctors. At that time we were able to recruit new doctors from South Africa to fill those positions. Part of today’s challenge is that recruiting South African doctors is no longer an option. Another challenge is that many doctors want a more supportive environment to work in (e.g. easier access to specialists, diagnostic services, and other professionals) and are less inclined to do emergency and hospital coverage on top of their family practice. Many also don’t want the overhead costs and management headaches associated with running their own clinic. Both the provincial government and NHA are aware of this changing dynamic and the challenges it presents for rural health care delivery, and provincial strategies have been developed to start addressing this. These are the strategies that Council, the NHA, CRD, the MLAs office, and our physicians are collaboratively investigating to start addressing our needs here. Over the coming months Council will be exploring options to assist NHA to recruit doctors to come to Quesnel to practice full time or part time (locums), while also finding ways to provide additional support to the doctors who are continuing to practice in Quesnel. We are also working with Northern Health to establish an unattached patients clinic to support residents who do not have a family doctor and to unburden our emergency room. We have already made significant progress on this issue since our collaborative team came together in March. Watch for announcements and updates over the next few months, as Council works with our partners to proactively address this emergent need in our community.

OPINIONS

Repeal The provincial government and the courts are doing their best to keep participation in elections under strict control. The two big political parties, the BC Liberals and NDP, are behind proposed legislation that would give political parties a complete list of everyone who voted in a provincial election. The information would not be made available to independent candidates or even incumbent MLAs like Delta independent Vicki Huntington. This is nothing more than an assault on privacy. In some ways, it is an attempt to use sophisticated technological means to go back to the era when people had to cast their votes in public. In those days, voters could lose their jobs, their homes and face assault and other criminal acts — simply because of the way they voted. Thankfully, Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver, Huntington and the privacy commissioner are standing against this. The effort to coerce Elections BC to hand over this private information to political parties must fail. Elections are the one time when citizens have the power to bring politicians and political parties to heel. They should be freewheeling affairs — not a stage-managed series of photo-ops designed for the 6 p.m. television news, as increasingly happens on both the federal and provincial stages. While there is a need for some spending limits during campaigns, particularly by parties and candidates, it is highly unlikely that spending of $1,000 by either an individual or group will sway the outcome of an election in a given riding. And if it does, it means that message resonated with a large number of voters. Vincent Gogolek, executive director of the B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association, says the court decision is an assault on freedom of expression. His organization launched the court challenge to try and overthrow the requirement to register with Elections BC, on constitutional grounds. The maximum penalty for not registering is a $10,000 fine and a year in jail. The law says it applies to “an advertising message that takes a position on an issue with which a registered political party or candidate is associated.” That could be virtually anything, and could apply to a hand-written sign in the back of someone’s pickup. This law is far too restrictive, and it needs to be repealed. –BP

Time for teachers to question union

A

fter the first few glum lines of his speech, it was difficult to tell anything had changed for B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker as he took his familiar place before the TV cameras last week. Iker droned on about how B.C. schools are under-funded by hundreds of millions of dollars, echoing demands from the disastrous strike he led the union membership into last year. The B.C. Court of Appeal had just overturned a bizarre trial court decision that tried to give the union everything it wanted: a trip back in time to the NDP wonderland of 2001, a constitutional spanking for the B.C. Liberal government and a $2 million bonus of taxpayers’ money. The BCTF must now pay back that $2 million and scrape up whatever is left of its members’ compulsory dues to plead for an appeal at the Supreme Court of Canada, continuing the executive’s self-righteous fantasy of controlling education spending in B.C. The appeal court didn’t just overturn the judgment of B.C. Supreme Court

✍ Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Justice Susan Griffin. It shredded her legal reasoning and bluntly corrected her, over and over, on evidence she ignored or misinterpreted. The appeal court confirmed at great length what I said when Griffin’s second decision came down in early 2014: it was far worse for B.C. schools than when judges decided in 2005 that teachers can bring union propaganda into classrooms. Did the government bargain in bad faith? No. Did they conspire to provoke a strike? No. Did they illegally strip working conditions from the teacher contract? No. Turns out our kids are not just “working conditions” for teachers, and public policy still matters. And it turns out that making special needs assistants dash between

sector unions had already accepted. In the end, their paltry strike fund long gone, the union grudgingly accepted the going rate. They figured they had the elected government on the run in court. Wrong again. Next up for the ministry is taking control of professional development. A bill before the legislature will enforce standards, once the NDP is done denouncing it. Singing <I>Solidarity Forever</ I> around a campfire and calling it paid professional development (a real example, by the way) will soon go the way of the union-controlled College of Teachers – onto the scrap heap of history. There are BCTF members who understand how illserved they are by their union. They are looking critically at the performance of their leaders, who are too often distracted by grandiose “social justice” campaigns as far away as the Middle East. classes to deal with two kids here and three over there was a lousy idea. Now there’s even a credit course offered in high school for students with learning difficulties, which probably has some BCTF minion crafting a pile of grievances about segregation. In the negotiated settlement reached last fall, teachers shared $105 million to make thousands of baseless grievances go away, after the union filed one for student numbers in every class in the province. This bloated perpetual protest machine drains the public purse in more ways than taxpayers realize. Parents understand the strikes, though. They remember a union that scrapped report cards, disrupted administration and forced schools to shut down at graduation time. The strike then dragged into the fall, as the government held the line on public service spending. And what was the key issue that kept schools closed? It wasn’t special needs support, where student performance has continued to improve. No, it was the BCTF demanding a raise twice as big as other public

Deeply concerned Editor: Open letter to Minister of Finance and Education. The Board of Education of School District 28 (SD28) Quesnel would like to express our disappointment and concern regarding the lack of Education funding for 2015/16. Our district has continued to make the required cuts to our annual budget; however, we are past the point of being able to keep the cuts from impacting students. In the past five years our enrolment has declined by approximately 430 school aged students. Declining enrolment and other unfunded cost pressures have resulted in the following decisions: • Closure of a rural elementary school • Restructured our continuing education program • Eliminated summer school program • Reduction of 20 teaching positions • Reconfigured two principal positions • Elimination of two support staff positions • Reduced classroom supplies • Reduced administrative/program/department expenses • Eliminated school bus runs • Participating in shared services initiatives, absorbing all unfunded cost increases and funding the cooperative gains increase for our support staff The 2015/2016 preliminary budget process is currently underway, we are yet again facing a funding shortfall of over $900,000. The factors contributing to the funding shortfall are the required Administrative savings target cuts of $202,670, further loss of regular schoolaged, international and adult students and continued unfunded inflationary cost pressures such as Medical Service Plan (MSP) premiums, Hydro and WorkSafeBC rate increases. We are currently undergoing a School Development Strategy process which will be completed in December 2015 and the recommendations will likely include additional school closures. An efficient use of our facilities will enable the District to keep the resources in the classroom and provide the best possible service for our students. We are deeply concerned that continued shortfalls in funding will jeopardize the District’s ability to continue to offer quality education programs. SD28 Board Of Education

Beware of fraudulent CRA contact

Scams could result in identity and financial theft The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) warns you to beware of telephone calls or e-mails that claim to be from the CRA but are not. These are phishing and other fraudulent scams that could result in identity and financial theft. You should be especially aware of phishing scams asking for information such as credit card, bank account and passport numbers. The CRA would never ask for this type of information. Some of these scams ask for this personal information directly, and others refer to a website resembling the CRA’s, where you are asked to confirm your identity by entering personal information. You should not click on links included in these e-mails. E-mail scams may also contain embedded malicious software that can harm your computer and put your personal information at risk. Some recent telephone scams involve threatening or forceful language to scare you into paying

fictitious debt to the CRA. If you get such a call, hang up and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre – see contact information below. Some recent e-mail scams involve telling you that you are entitled to a refund of a specific amount or telling you that your tax assessment has been verified and you are getting a tax refund. These emails often have CRA logos or Internet links that look official. Some contain obvious grammar or spelling mistakes. These types of communication are not from the CRA. When the CRA calls you, it has established procedures in place to make sure your personal information is protected. If you want to confirm the authenticity of a CRA telephone number, call the CRA by using the numbers on its Telephone numbers page. The number for business-related calls is 1-800-959-5525. The number for calls about individual concerns is 1-800959-8281. To help you identify

possible scams, you can use the following guidelines: The CRA: • Never asks for information about your passport, health card, or driver’s licence; •Never shares your taxpayer information with another person, unless you have provided the appropriate authorization; and •Never leaves personal information on your answering machine or asks you to leave a message containing your personal information on an answering machine. When in doubt, ask yourself the following: •Am I expecting money from the CRA? •Does this sound too good to be true? •Is the requester

asking for information I would not include with my tax return? •Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? •How did the requester get my e-mail address or telephone number? •Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? •Is there a reason that the CRA may be calling? Do I have a tax balance outstanding? The CRA has strong practices to protect the confidentiality of taxpayer information. The confidence and trust that individuals and businesses have in the CRA is a cornerstone of Canada’s tax system. For more information about the security of

taxpayer information and other examples of fraudulent communications, go to www.cra.gc.ca/ security. For information

on scams, to report deceptive telemarketing, or if you have given personal or financial information unwittingly, contact

the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www. antifraudcentrecentreantifraude.ca. or toll free at 1-888495-8501.

Turkish schools are similar but different in many ways to Canadian schools

I have the good fortune to know some Turks who love to travel and share their culture. Each trip has afforded new sights and delightful cultural differences. Snippets from Turkey are just a few of my observations from this amazing historical world that tries to blend modernity with tradition. he schools I have seen in Turkey are alike in some ways to our Canadian system; however, there are many interesting differences. Children are grouped into primary and secondary schools with the majority attending schools that encompass just three or four grade levels. Schools vary greatly and it depends on the level of conservatism in the city. On the west side of the country, most schools are like European schools where students are blended. Further to the east, where life is more conservative, there is an Arab system of separation. This separation might be at the school level where the girls go to one and the boys to another or within a school where the classes are separate. If willing to pay, there are private schools available in larger centres. A parent might pay $1,000 a month for specialized education such as all in English. The schools are large block construction of three and four stories high. Including the play areas, you could fit about four Turkish schools on the land area on which Correlieu sits. The whole of the play areas have been paved or tiled and since the buildings are brick and cement, there is little maintenance to do. Not all of the schools have a gymnasium and if they do, it seems to be a separate building that was added later.

T

The schools often bear the names of prominent people of the area and I discovered that this is because these people have funded the building of the school. Once a private person has facilitated the construction, the building is turned over to the state. This also happens with smaller, private universities. Many schools also boast a very large statue or painting of Kemal Ataturk, the man who promoted a common language and education for all. School starts later in September because the heat of summer is still intense in most areas. A school day seems to be similar to what we know but many have a longer lunch hour. It varies but younger students usually stay at school for the lunch break, while older students either go home or flood the city cafes. Uniforms are the ‘norm’. It seems that each school has a pair of colours and students are expected to wear attire that matches the colours. There is no standard pant or skirt so there is some choice allowed. Yesterday, the group of girls all wore the same sweater but one had a skirt, one pants and one shorts in khaki and white. Interestingly, the colours are all standard and muted. Red was the brightest colour I noted. High school students are most often seen in navy or black and white. For this level, ties are a common accessory and many girls wear a form of scarf tie. School busses are a fact of life in every town. They are a small bus that holds about 20 students and parents must pay extra for this service. The bus has a set group of students to ferry and can be seen sitting outside a house, honking the horn. At rush hour, there is a fleet of these

Aside from bussing, arriving at school, just like in Quesnel, happens in a variety of ways. Often a grandparent walks the little ones, clutches of pre-teens can be seen walking or cycling to school and mothers like to hover. In rural areas, it is not uncommon to see a horse and buggy draw up, complete with three generations. The little ones hop off and head to school while the rest take the bountyloaded wagon to the market. Tractors may also be a noisy part of the mix. Depending on population, some schools have split shifts so the noon hour is chaotic with little busses taking the early crew home and returning with the later bunch who get out of school after 5 p.m. I heard music coming from the school loud speaker today. There were about 10 seconds of music, then a tone and then an announcement. It was a pleasant way to get everyone’s attention. Apparently, some schools still play the state anthem at the beginning and end of each day. During free or exercise time, soccer seems to be the

game of choice. The factions either choose to watch or play the game and often the ball is well on its way to being flat. High fences keep most of the errant kicks on the playground but I have retrieved a few balls that escaped the

Fight of her life

ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

C

herri Riley is in the battle of her life. Diagnosed in March of this year with Stage 2 Hodgkin Lymphoma, life took a decidedly different turn for this busy wife and mother. She went to the doctor after discovering a lump on her breast bone and one on her neck and was immediately sent for an ultrasound then a biopsy, all within a week which resulted in her diagnosis. With Hodgkin Lymphoma, a relatively rare cancer, accounts for about five per cent of all cancers and 15 per cent of all lymphomas diagnosed. Cherri was advised that this type of cancer can invade all parts of the lymphatic system including her bone marrow so she underwent three separate bone marrow biopsy before they had enough to confirm she was negative. It was a testing frenzy for this 43-year-old including pulmonary tests to check her breathing, echocardiograms in Quesnel, a PET scan in Vancouver and CT scans back in Quesnel. All within a month of first visiting the doctor. Treatment was determined and on April 10, Cherri had her first chemotherapy in Prince George. “They use old school aggressive treatment because it always works,” she said. “It takes five hours for the chemicals to travel throughout your body and I had every side affect they listed as even remotely possible.” Cherri suffered with mouth sores, body and muscle ache, fatigue, bloating and diahrea and extreme dizziness. “These side affects set in within 24 hours of my first treatment,” she said. “I never dreamed in a thousand years this would happen to me.” With total family support, her husband has driven Cherri to her first two treatments in Prince George. Her 14-year-old son Connor accompanied his parents for the first treatment. “I’m very open with him about everything,” Cherri said. “My husband is adjusting to it all. He’s had to take over most of my domestic responsibilities and he’s doing a wonderful job. I have a huge support network and I couldn’t do this without them.” This amazing women still holds down two jobs. After her first treatment she tried to go to her job at the

A&W, but realized she needed to recover first. Now she takes the week off after treatment but returns to her job the following week, just before another round of chemo begins. Cherri is also a mechanics helper with the Rocky Mountaineer and hopes to be able to do the same with that job which she loves. A&W has been accommodating for Cherri and Rocky Mountaineer staff have been very supportive, she reported. Each chemotherapy treatment consists of five drugs being pumped into her body the last of which takes two and half hours to administer. “That drug is painful the entire time,” she said. “The nurses wrap my arms and also dilute the drug with three bags of saline just to get it into my body.” Within two weeks Cherri’s hair began to fall out. “We had a headshaving party but I cried,” she said.

Annie Gallant Lifestyles Editor

“Losing my hair was a reality check. My husband had to drag me to the first treatment and the second was no better now that I know what I was facing.” For her third treatment, Cherri will be taking it in Quesnel. “Sometimes I have my own pity party, but you have to put that aside, put on a smile – both because attitude is everything but I also don’t want my family to worry.” She said regardless of all the support, “and I’m very grateful for that” in the end you take this journey on your own. Cherri admits she still in denial. “I don’t want to give in to this disease,” she said. “I want to carry on like I always have.” But she knows as treatments continue her immune system will be more and more depleted but with both her jobs she had minimal public contact so is optimistic she’s remain healthy enough to carry on with both. One of the ongoing issue for Cherri is the boredom that accompanies the illness. “I’m restless, maybe I need a hobby.” The family has signed up for counselling and Cherri has discussed her appetite issues with a Canadian Cancer Society dietician. She is also signed up for the Look Good, Feel Good program at Kordyban Lodge in Prince George which is a beautiful facility serving out-of-town patients, primarily cancer patients with temporary lodgings during treatments and other services for patients. Once Cherri’s treatments are finished (in about six months) she will have another PET scan which lights up any cancer cells remaining in her body. She said they’ll know instantly if they’ve got it all. Cherri has participated in Relay for Life for two years but this year will be very different for her. “Now I get it why people commit to Relay for Life. I never expected to experience what I’m going through and learn what I’m learning.” There’s still time to form a Relay for Life team by either contacting the local office, 778-466-3332 or online at cancer.ca/Relay and filling out a registration form. Relay for Life in Quesnel is slated for May 30 in LeBourdais Park, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. where the place will be packed with teams, activities, entertainment on the Friendship Stage and plenty of camaraderie. This year’s theme is the Colours of Cancer and its expected to be a colourful day in the park. The entire community is invited to come to the park and share the excitement, even if you’re not on a team.

Perennial of the Year – geranium Biokovo

E

arlier this spring while raking out my border, I was rewarded with the citrusy scent of the little Geranium x cantabrigiense Biokovo. It is one of my favourite perennials and I’m so glad to see it has been awarded the ‘Perennial of the Year’ for 2015. Perennial geraniums or cranesbills are truly the work horses of the perennial garden. These cranesbills should not to be confused with the other half – hardy geraniums of the genus Pelargonium which we use mostly as annuals. This geranium was discovered in the Biokovo Mountains of the Dalmatia region of Croatia. Not to get off topic here, but if you ever get the chance put Croatia on your bucket list. I only wish we had more time to explore and hike this mountainous area. I could go on but this is a gardening

column, not a travel blog. Biokovo was discovered here as a naturally occurring hybrid of Geranium dalmaticum and G. macrorrhizum. Biokovo provides multiple seasons of ornamental interest as required to be nominated as a perennial of the year. In late spring, the

plant is covered with masses of blush pink flowers making it a great groundcover. It combines nicely with dark foliage perennials such as heucheras or silver leaved plants, such as Japanese painted fern. Reaching a height of

climatic conditions, be low maintenance and be relatively pest and disease resistant. I have had this tough little ground cover in my garden for many years. It is definitely hardy to zone 4 and I would say safe to grow in a zone 3 area. Once established it requires very little care, being very drought tolerant. It will grow in full sun to part shade. I have it growing in a tough location – dry shade. It pulls through every year with little to no care. It spreads by rhizomes, but not deeply rooted, so it easy to pull out and control in the area you would like it to stay within. I give it a light raking in the spring to remove any dead leaves. It appears to be very resistant to pests and diseases.

Local athlete scores winning goal at Canlan Classic Spring Showdown GREG SABATINO Staff Writer The 2008-born BC Northern Selects, made up of 10 Williams Lake and two Quesnel hockey players, made history last weekend skating into Vancouver and winning the Canlan Classic Spring Showdown. In exciting fashion, Quesnel’s Kaelen Swanson potted the game winner just seven seconds into overtime in a 5-4 championship victory over the Kamloops Ice Pirates. Swanson also lit the lamp once in the first period, before Williams Lake’s Colton Gerrior and Blake Lamb, with two, helped achieve the feat. Jaxson Dikur was solid the entire tournament between the pipes. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve had,” said BCNS coach and Total Ice

Training Centre’s Tyrel Lucas. “The emotions on the kids, they were so happy. They deserved to win and they did.” It was the first time the team, which trains out of TITC, had played together at a tournament as a team. “I’ve been involved in hockey for 25 years and I’ve played for a lot of teams in Williams Lake before, but I’ve never been to Vancouver and done that,” Lucas said. “It’s never really been done by a team from the north.” Prior to the final the BCNS beat the Semiahmoo Sehawks 9-7, the BC Kodiaks (Richmond) 9-2, the Vancouver Seabirds 8-2 and the BC Spartans (Vancouver) 14-2. Linden Pinette, Asher Lucas, Andrew Lindsay, Rhys Marchand, Blake Riley, Dawson Rowse, Nathan Johnson

lakecity hockey players continued to shine. The 2001 BCNS, with goaltender Devin Chapman and 100 Mile House’s Lane

Paddison, also went unbeaten, posting a 5-0 record to claim the gold medal. Brady Wood and Blake Pigeon also combined to help the

2006-born BCNS to a silver-medal finish with four wins and two losses. In the 2005 division Jackson Altwasser and Cadence

Peticlerc-Crosby helped the team to a fifth-place result, while Ty Oviatt and Ethan Smid suited up for the 2004-born BCNS.

.C. captures Canadian Wheelchair Curling gold medal British Columbia’s wheelchair curlers added to their leading gold-medal collection on Sunday at Centre Gilles Chabot in Boucherville, Que. B.C. captured its leading fifth Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship, beating the home team from Boucherville, skipped by Benoit Lessard, 11-1 in the gold-medal game. Not only was it a fifth national title for the province since the event’s inception in 2004 (and its first since 2010), it gave B.C. skip Gerry Austgarden his third gold medal after he won throwing lead rocks in 2005 and 2006 as a member of Team Canada, skipped by Chris Daw. Also, it was a third gold medal for vice-skip Darryl Neighbour (he won in 2007 as a skip and as a lead in 2009 for skip Jim Armstrong), and a fourth gold

for second Frank Labounty (he played vice-skip for Armstrong in 2009 and 2008, and for Neighbour in 2007). The B.C. team, coached by Brad Burton and based at the Richmond Curling Centre, was rounded out by lead Alison Duddy. Lessard’s Quebec team (third Carl Marquis, second Johanne Daly, lead Christine Lavallée, coach Germain Tremblay), was seeking its second Canadian title in three years after winning in 2013. Quebec sailed through the round robin in Boucherville, going 8-1 to finish first, and then dispatched 2014 champs Dennis Thiessen of Manitoba 12-3 in the Page 1-2 playoff game on Saturday night. But after taking a single in the first against B.C., the Lotuslanders took over, taking a deuce in the second, stealing singles in the first and fifth ends, and then a crushing steal of

three in the sixth. The teams shook hands after B.C. stole four more in the seventh. B.C. entered the gold-

medal game on a high. Earlier Sunday, B.C. ended the hopes for a gold-medal repeat from the Manitobans with a 10-3

triumph in the semifinal, thanks to a count of four in the first end, a steal of two in the second and one more in the third.
