Giant slip-and-slide set for Harbour City BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

Deadline for hotel construction looms

COMPANY HAS until May 30 to lay foundation, says agreement with city. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
A Nanaimo city councillor will “definitely entertain” a bid to claw back property from the conference centre hotel developer if a deadline to lay foundation isn’t met. SSS Manhao has until the end of May to pour the foundation for its $50-million conference centre hotel or Nanaimo city council has the option to purchase the property. Coun. Gord Fuller plans to propose politicians flex that right.
It’s been more than nine months since the company announced the start of the construction phase of its hotel. The building permit application expired in December, the developer hasn’t reapplied and there’s been no recent discussion about a permit with the City of Nanaimo, according to Dale Lindsay, the city’s director of community development. The lack of a building permit means no foundation can be laid and without one by May 30, the city can reclaim the site. Mayor Bill McKay said he doesn’t want council to make any rash decisions. There are not “six other people” lined up to get the property and he said he believes the developer has a winning formula to make a hotel on that site successful.
But Fuller questions how long council is willing to “wait and see.” “We go out of our way to offer great conditions and then nothing,” said Fuller, who believes the developer should be held to the agreement. “Unless they have some really, really, really, really good excuse, but I just can’t see it. I can’t see why they wouldn’t have contacted us by now to say that they weren’t going to be able to meet that deadline.” Council needs something to show the developer is committed and “we just haven’t gotten it yet,” says Fuller. McKay said things aren’t going as fast as he envisioned, but he understands SSS Manhao is still working on the project, including on design modifications and financing. See ‘COUNCIL’ /4
A giant slip-and-slide could be spilling into the Harbour City this summer. Slide the City, a 300-metre slip-and-slide and street party, is working on a permit to make Nanaimo ground zero for its inaugural tour north of the border. Vancouver Island is up on the event website as a destination for the event, which is coming to Canada for the first time this year. Thousands of people have already signed up to be the first to hear about registration, but it hasn’t been known which city would play host. The City of Nanaimo now reports it’s helping Slide the City with the permit process that could see people coursing down a giant slide this July. Slide the City co-founder John Malfatto confirms Nanaimo is its Vancouver Island pick. While Victoria was in the running, “Nanaimo kind of said, ‘Hey we can get you permitted really quickly and we’ve got some streets that will work really well’,” he said. Slide the City is working with Nanaimo to pick a street for a one-day event, which can see up to 6,000 slip-and-sliders. Registration will open once it has a permit. “Right now it really is in the hands of the health department and it has been for the past few weeks,” said Malfatto, adding the company wants to get the whole community involved, including non-profits, which would get donations in exchange for volunteers. Rachel Thomas, Slide the City’s director of slippery surfaces, has been working with the city and didn’t want to disclose any further details, but said her group hopes to make an announcement by May 12. “It’s just so new, unique and unusual and another big draw is just how nostalgic it is,” said Thomas. “People going back to when they used to put on these fun mini slip-and-slides in their backyard, but we’re kind of making it bigger and better and bringing it to the heart of downtown and bringing an entire community together.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Educators doubt value of ranking
I
fraSEr iNStitutE puts private school at the top of annual report on elementary schools. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
A private school is the highest-ranked Nanaimo area school in the 2015 Fraser Institute Report Card on B.C. Elementary Schools. Aspengrove School in Lantzville was 24th overall in the province. Rounding out the top five in Nanaimo was École Hammond Bay Elementary, Learn at Home K-7 program, Nanaimo Christian School and Departure Bay Elementary School.
The Fraser Institute, a right-wing think tank, generates the elementary school report based on Foundation Skills Assessment testing results. Some educators question the value of the rankings. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said he doesn’t put much credence in the rankings. He said private schools have more
money at their disposal. “They have the benefit of raising their own money. It costs a lot of money for people to go there. It’s not comparing apples to apples, as far as I’m concerned,” said Rae. “We are publicly funded and we do an amazing job with what we have. To me, we can’t compare them equally.” E l i s a b e t h R e a y, Aspengrove admissions director, said the school was pleased to hear of the results, but added that her school looks at individual skills
assessment results, not rankings. “There are a lot of things that go into the scores that come out of the rankings, so for us, there are so many variables it’s not really a true picture of a school, whether it’s our school or any other school in the district,” said Reay. “It doesn’t give you a true picture of what goes on within the walls of a school.” The institute’s secondary school rankings are tentatively scheduled to be released next Thursday (May 14). reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Council has to meet with the company to find out exactly where the project is at, McKay said. Councillors Wendy Pratt and Bill Bestwick also want to talk to the developer. Pratt says she hasn’t given up on the hotel or the conference centre, but doesn’t have enough information to say what decision council will have to make should the deadline not be met. Bestwick said he wants to hear SSS Manhao’s new dates, goals and objectives. “I think we all have concerns and we have for some months with the deadlines that have not been met … and then what is next steps? Until such a time as I can hear what their new plan is, or isn’t or what their goals and objectives are ... I don’t think any of us can make a balanced decision,” he said.

Trustees consider cuts to courtesy bus rides
I
courtESy ridErS could be eliminated to balance budget. By Karl yu THE NEwS BuLLETIN
Four hundred courtesy rider seats on Nanaimo school district buses could be axed as part of the 2015-16 budget. The elimination of the non-guaranteed bus seats – for students living within walking distance of a school – are part of the proposal, as school trustees try to balance the budget with a $4-million shortfall. In addition, the district is considering purchasing software that will track when and where students get on buses, trip duration and allow for online registration. “The students would receive a swap card, so we would know when and if they’re on the bus, numbers, etc.,” said school district superintendent John Blain at a recent budget meeting.
“We would do analysis of the bus routes all year, of the change in courtesy riders, so we could do some efficiency pieces around that as well,” Blain said. The software is estimated to cost $18,000 and according to Pete Sabo, school district director of planning and operations, the software would be an add-on to the global positioning systems currently installed on buses. The district isn’t anticipating any savings due to the courtesy seat reductions, as the school district previously approved busing for students in the Cedar school zone to Ladysmith Secondary School. According to a budget report, the district currently has $345,281 budgeted for 2015-16 for facilities and transportation. The district is also considering implementing bus rider fees for the 2016-17 school year. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Council OKs tax increase It’s official – Nanaimo taxpayers will see a oneper cent tax hike. Nanaimo city council adopted its financial plan and property tax rates bylaw on Monday, which will see taxes inch up one per cent this year. “After much discussion, I am pleased that we were able to hold the line and arrive at a final figure that, at one per cent, is the smallest increase Nanaimo ratepayers have seen in years and, quite likely, one of the smallest in B.C. this year,” said Mayor Bill McKay. Property tax notices will be mailed after Victoria Day weekend.
Lantzville faces tax increase Lantzville residents could see a two-per cent tax hike this year. The district is one vote away from adoption of its five-year financial plan and tax rates bylaw, which will push civic property taxes up two per cent this year. Lantzville council, which is now down to five members after two recent resignations, voted 4-1 for the fiveyear plan with Coun. John Coulson opposed. Coulson and Coun. Denise Haime were both opposed to the tax rates bylaw.

Hockey team seeks new owners ISLAND EXPRESS BUS

NANAIMO ClIppErS operations strong, says club’s governor. By GreG sakaki The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Clippers are for sale. The owners of the city’s junior A hockey club decided last month to look into selling the team. Ken Wagner, Clippers governor, said the decision was made collectively by the ownership group at the end of the B.C. Hockey League season. “It’s been 10 great years, but it’s different interests and different reasons why we’re selling the club,” he said. “Someone local should have
that opportunity to take the bull by the horns and have as much fun as we have.” He and the other owners – Bill Gallacher, Kelly Hrudey and Paul Colborne – live in Alberta and have work and family commitments there. Wagner said the operations of the Clippers are status quo. The team is working on sponsorships and marketing just like any other off-season and Wagner said the recruiting budget is the same as previous years. “If we don’t sell the club, nothing’s going to change,” he said. “We’ve just made it public now, to say, hey, if there’s anybody local, or anybody out there that has an interest, this is the best way to get it out there.” Wagner said he and the other
owners consider themselves stewards of the hockey team, part of the Clippers’ 42-year history. Whoever takes over the club, he said, will inherit a strong program with renewed community support. “We’re only going to talk to people that we know are two things – they’re in a position financially to buy the club, and the second thing is people that are in the position financially to support the club,” Wagner said. “The worst thing you’d want to do is blow up the program by selling it to an owner that gets caught up in the moment. You’ve got to have someone who can sustain the losses when it’s not so good, but you’ve also got to have someone that is doing it for the right reasons.”

Grant supports renewable energy development By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Cash awarded at a recent export workshop in Nanaimo could benefit local companies involved in renewable marine energy. Ed Fast, federal minister for international trade, announced $60,275 from the government’s Opportunities for Associations program for Marine Renewables Canada at the workshop,
hosted to provide tools and information small and mediumsize enterprises can use to capitalize on international business and expor t opportunities. Marine Renewables Canada is the trade association for Canada’s tidal and wave power production equipment manufacturers, research, design and engineering firms. The money will go toward covering
travel expenses to send industry representatives to technology and trade conferences in Europe in 2015 and 2016, said Scot Merriam, an engineer with Nanaimobased SRM Projects. SRM representatives plan on attending the International Conference on Ocean Energy in Edinburgh in 2016. “SRM’s interests are in project management and project development so
we’re always keeping an eye open for the latest in technology, what people are doing, how they’re mitigating impacts and things like this,” Merriam said. B.C.’s industry is in its infancy compared to other alternative energy technologies, he said. There are no Nanaimo manufacturers and just a few applications for tidal power test projects on Vancouver Island.

Marine flares to be collected The proper disposal of expired marine flares is a challenge for boaters as they cannot be lit, thrown in the water or tossed into household garbage. As a community service to the boating public, Nanaimo Power and Sail Squadron, in cooperation with CIL Orion, will be accepting expired marine flares of all kinds on May 23 at the West Marine store at 120-2000 Island Highway North. There is no charge for this service. All boats are required to carry a specific number of marine flares of various types, depending on the size of the boat. Approval of these expires four years from the date of manufacture, which is stamped on each flare. Before the boating season gets into full swing, boaters should check that they have the correct number and type of flare on board and ensure that they have not expired.

Hold out hope for hotel plan
Instead of a hotel, all we’ve got is a vacant lot. Nanaimo’s long-awaited conference centre hotel project is going nowhere these days, let alone 21 storeys skyward. Ever since developer SSS Manhao let its building permit expire a few months ago, Nanaimo city council has been left to wonder at the hotel’s status, and stew. One councillor, Gord Fuller, intends to put forth a motion for the city to exercise a clause to buy back the property should the developer miss the deadline to pour the foundation. We understand council’s frustration with the project’s delays. It has been 10 months since the hoteliers held a ribbon cutting at the site and suggested construction would be completed in 2016. Clearly, the photo op and the timeline were overly optimistic. But why pull the property out from under SSS Manhao now? Buying back the land would cost taxpayers in the short term, and there’s nothing to suggest it would be a sound business decision in the long term. If there were other viable proposals for the Gordon Street lot, fine, but according to the mayor, there aren’t. Unless we go so far as to rezone the land and sell it to the highest bidder to build a stack of condominiums, then the property is only worth so much. Manhao’s hotel and its promise of tens of thousands of Chinese tourists are as much as we could hope for at the site if we’re thinking tourism and downtown revitalization. So why not hold out hope a little longer? Watching and waiting isn’t costing us anything – not until we’re watching and waiting while a better opportunity passes us by. If that’s happening, now is the time to let city council know. If we’ve lost confidence in this conference centre hotel, and think there’s another solution for the city, then we should speak up. One way or another, let’s make sure we get quite a lot out of our little vacant lot. Coast Guard base needed To the Editor:
Re: Coast Guard hysteria sinks to lower level, Opinion, April 30. The Coast Guard station in Kitsilano was primarily a rescue boat station, but ‘Kits Base’ was also one of the best equipped and trained lifeboat stations in Canada. We fought fires, responded to numerous oil spills yearly, rescued and assisted hundreds of mariners and boaters annually, trained many ‘basic oil pollution responders’ (until that program was shut down also). The staff at the station also monitored and helped to maintain navigational aids in the busy harbour. How do you explain closing one of the busiest Coast Guard stations in the country to save $700,000 a year? When will Canadians wake up?

Budget isn’t really balanced To the Editor,
The Stephen Harper government announced with much fanfare that the budget was balanced. They will take this supposed stupendous feat of fiscal serendipity to garner votes all the way to the election – but sadly it’s not true. The so-called balanced budget is only a hopeful forecast for 2015-16. On a total budget of over $200 billion they have managed to wangle a razor-thin excess of $1.4 billion by selling assets, over
optimistic employment, interest and growth rates as well as other unestablished and frankly unverifiable scenarios. For any of this to actually come to pass is highly unlikely. However, fortunately for the Harper gang, we will not actually find out if the budget is balanced until the public accounts come out in 2016, well after the election. Anyone willing to bet on an actual balanced budget in 2016? Will anyone care by then? Liz Fox Lantzville

Lantzville has problems that it won’t acknowledge To the Editor,
Re: Two councillors resign from Lantzville district, April 30. The B.C. Community Charter, after stating that the mayor is the “head and chief executive officer of the municipality” describes the additional responsibilities of a mayor. The phrases “on behalf of the council” and “reflect the will of the council” make it clear that the mayor is the spokesperson of council and does not have independent authority. The November 2014 election brought back Colin Haime as mayor, with two councillors who could be expected to support him – one of the two is his wife Denise. Suddenly, six months into the term, came an open memo from all five senior district managers, complaining of harassment and public humiliation and asking for improved council meetings. Maintaining decorum, a standard of civilized behavior, is the mayor’s responsibility. This tells us that, in the opinion of senior employees, the mayor is failing in his duty. Shortly thereafter, a flyer signed by four councillors was circulated to all residents. It set a special meeting at which three motions were to be heard: remove the mayor from his appointment to the Regional District of Nanaimo, replace him with someone else, and begin immediately to resolve the complaint from the managers. This tells us that a majority of councillors were convinced that they could not effect change without desperate measures because they resorted to using one of the few items councilors have control over: appointments to outside bod-
ies made by public vote. Subsequent actions destroyed the purpose of that special meeting. One of the four who had signed the flyer changed his vote and moved to rescind the motions. Proper procedure was violated – special meetings are supposed to adhere to the reasons for which the meeting was publicly called. Shortly thereafter, two councillors, highly valued by the community as expressed in election votes, resigned rather than sit through three and a half more years of what they see as high-handed usurpation of the powers of the council. There are two stories that emerge from all this. One story tells us that the mayor, backed by a majority of members of council, intends to continue as he has begun and all hope for improvement is lost until 2018. The other story tells us that the mayor and his supporters have no idea what the problem is. At this point, there is no middle ground. Residents of Lantzville who care about how their council is run must make personal, moral judgments about whom to believe. Talk of mediation and arbitration displays lack of knowledge of these two processes. Mediation fails if one side refuses to acknowledge fault. Either process is corrupt if the accused chooses the facilitator. The ministry responsible for municipal affairs will not intervene at this time. What kind of person will want to run in the coming byelection in Lantzville? Marjorie Stewart Lantzville

When Shaeah Love finished a week-long meditation she had a stunning moment of clarity. “When I came out I realized it was time,” Love said. “There was a voice that said you need to write a book.” Love had dreamed of writing a book for years, but it wasn’t until her enchanted episode more than two years ago that she realized the time was right. “There was a deeper calling that awoke within me that I was able to connect with,” Love said. After two years of weaving her adventures, heartbreaks, moments of loss and confusion together, Love released her first book, From My Heart To Yours, this past June. “It is a year in my life recounting my experiences, life challenges, life blessings,” Love said. “The whole intention is to share ... about my experience and my journey of healing and transformation.” On Friday (May 8), Love will be reading excerpts from her book, From My Heart To Yours at the Vault Café. The event will also feature a musical performance by songstress Theda

e are lucky to get our water from a high quality source in the mountains 40 km upland from the City of Nanaimo. There are two dams: Jump Lake Dam and South Fork Dam that serve as reservoirs to store large volumes of water for domestic needs and fish flows. This water carries on to flow into the Nanaimo River system. Some of this water enters a pipe that splits into dual pipelines that carries the water by gravity from the South Fork Dam to the new
my soul’s calling,” Love said. “For the last 10 years it has been my intention to live authentically and the big part of that journey was unraveling all the layers imposed by society.” Love, who has battled with depres-
sion and provides a variety healing and meditation options through her company Aloha Love Heals, hopes her book inspires people who are struggling in their personal lives, whether it be with mental health or anything else.
filtration plant on Nanaimo Lakes Road. This filtration plant (coming online Fall 2015) filters the already clean water to the high standards required by the Island Health Authority, removing pathogens that may be present in the water, as well as turbidity caused by heavy rains. The water’s journey from the first dam at Jump Lake to your tap in the City takes about 24 hours. This mountainous upper watershed resides in private managed forest lands, where active forest management takes place. The forestry companies operating
“There is such a stigma to mental health issues and depression,” Love said. “There is this thing that we have to hide it because of that shame and I want to break down that stigma and bring a normalcy to the struggle so that
people can reach out and get help and not feel like they have to hide and pretend.” Love reads Friday at 7 p.m. A donation of $10 is required. For more information, please visit www.shaeahlove. com.

in the watershed work collaboratively with the City and the Regional District with the common objective of maintaining high drinking water quality and protecting fish habitat. Management practices on the land are in place to ensure the forestry activities do not impact the water resource. Though we get substantial rains in the winter months, summertime brings dry spells where we can go without rain for months at a time. Luckily the City’s water storage in Jump Lake is sufficient to carry us through the dry season. However, it is
important to conserve and be wise with water use. Lower winter snowpack and less frequent precipitation means that holding on to the water we have is crucial. Conservation measures such as reducing outdoor irrigation, using efficient appliances, and fixing leaks go a long way to making sure the water storage we have lasts. Cheers to delicious Nanaimo water!

Author shares research
I
LAWRENCE WINKLER speaks at the Nanaimo North library. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
University of British Columbia professor Lawrence Winkler was sitting in his backyard of his Westwood Lake home one day, when he became curious. “I would sit in an Adirondack chair after working in the garden and I would look around subconsciously ... at what was there and gradually I just started asking questions of what things were and where they came from,” Winkler said. Eventually, Winkler, who happens to be a doctor in Nanaimo, became curious and started researching about all the plants and animals in his yard and around Westwood Lake. That research quickly turned into Winkler’s first book called Westwood Lake Chronicles. “Over time it became an anthem,” he said. “It was something I wrote initially for my wife and I. It was just a snapshot
in space and time of what we enjoyed and the nature in the backyard.” On Saturday (May 9), Winkler, who has written seven other books, will be reading and sharing stories from Westwood Lake Chronicles at the Nanaimo North Library, 6250 Hammond Bay Rd., at 2 p.m. Westwood Lake Chronicles was originally released on Amazon in 2012, but has since become a paperback after popular demand. The book is a narrative non-fiction that focuses on the various plant and wildlife in and around Westwood Lake and the dangers they face. “The book is sort of written in three layers,” Winkler said. “There is a lyrical layer on the bottom, there is kind of a scientific filling and there is a philosophical top strata.” Although Westwood Lake Chronicles was released in 2012, Winkler says it was the first book he ever wrote. His other books include Between the Cartwheels and Samurai Road. For more information on Winkler, please visit www.lawrencewinkler.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Geneen Georgiev speaks to young dancers at a workshop. Workshops are an important part of DanceCore competitions, which are taking place at the Port Theatre until Sunday (May 10).
Dancers dominate the Port Theatre By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
D a n c e r s f ro m s t u d i o s across Vancouver Island have invaded the Harbour City this week. Currently taking place at the Port Theatre is DanceCore, a six-day series of dance competitions and workshops. DanceCore organizer and
graduate of Nanaimo District Secondary School Geneen Georgiev said that while the event is competitive it’s also about forming new relationships for the dancers, who are between the ages of 6 and 20. “It’s a competition but we try to get everybody to learn and make friends,” she said. The final day of the event, Sunday (May 10) will include
an awards ceremony and gala, which features the top 10 dancers from the solo and group divisions. The ceremony and gala takes place at 5 p.m. with tickets ranging from $20 to $25. For ticket purchases and more information, including a full event schedule, please visit www.porttheatre.com.

Gallery paints goodbye to campus location
I
NANAIMO ART GALLERY focusing creative juices on downtown location. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
The paint has all but dried for one Nanaimo Art Gallery location. After nearly four decades of operation, the Nanaimo Art Gallery will close the doors at its campus location at Vancouver Island University later this month.
Julie Bevan, executive director for the Nanaimo Art Gallery, said the closure is emotional. “It is quite exciting, but bittersweet,” Bevan said. The campus location closure had been discussed for years and is part of the gallery’s strategy to centralize staff and resources on the downtown location. “Having all of our staff under one roof, we can concentrate on building an excellent exhibition and education program downtown,” Bevan said. The campus location first opened in September of 1977 as the Madrona
Exposition Centre and will officially close on May 15. Following the departure of the gallery, the location will see new life as VIU’s art and design department will eventually take over the space. According to Bevan, the relocation will not result in any job losses for the gallery. She said there is great pride in the gallery’s relationship with the university, which it plans on maintaining. “Our connection with VIU is important,” Bevan said. “It has been a long history.” arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Its car-like ride keeps the driver from feeling fatigued. Verdict One of the advantages of Fiat taking over Chrysler is the broader range of products they can introduce into the North American market. The team in Michigan took the award winning Doblo from Fiat and modified it to meet our needs. Things like the springs and shocks being stiffer and raising the ride height to help when driving over our rougher roads. The larger engine, running on gasoline will appeal to a wider audience than diesel but some buyers will wish that a diesel option were available here. At first glance, this Promaster City is something new, from a brand that has a lot of experience building smaller vans for urban environments. If you are in the trades and don’t need a full-size vehicle, this type of van is up to the job. The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 178hp 4-cylinder Fill-up: N/A Write to zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Smog lifts from Shanghai show Everything n
Sale! o
by Zack Spencer
Visiting China can make your head spin; from the number of people to the sights and smells, even the impact to the environment is all a bit overwhelming. Shanghai was the sight of China’s big 2015 auto show, alternating each year with Beijing. The difference between the two cities is vast. Beijing might be the capital but Shanghai is the bright light of capitalism that is the symbol, to the rest of the world, of just how quickly this country has changed. The traditional section of Shanghai is called the Bund, with colonial buildings facing the Huangpu River and the financial centre, across the river, called Pudong. It’s hard to believe, but this section of the city was farmland 20 years ago. It’s now home to some of the tallest towers anywhere in the world. Since China is now the largest new car market in the world, with more than 18 million vehicles sold each year, the push is on to limit the number of cars on the road and promote cleaner solutions. The city of Shanghai charges massive licensing fees for each car on the road. In some other

The auto manufacturers used the show to highlight new technology that will help cut vehicle pollution. For example, VW showcased the C Coupe GTE concept that looked ready to roll. This car would only be available in China and bring a level of luxury not found in other VWs here. It has a plug-in hybrid system that helps provide the best of both city and highway driving modes. The idea is to use up to 50 kilometres of electric range in the city, then switching to a gasoline/electric hybrid system
outside of the city. The Shanghai show is massive, with eight enormous halls showcasing brands from all over the world, including more than 100 domestic brands we will never see on our side of the world. Some domestic brands are doing exciting things but China is also known for some vehicles that look so much like existing brands, they could be called knock-offs or imitations. The government might be trying to eliminate air pollution but there seems to be no curbing the fake versions of import brands.

Visiting ancient temples and gardens is wonderful but you are always reminded of the 21st century. Just in the background is yet another high-rise being built for the throngs of newcomers to the big city from the countryside. Let’s hope the auto industry can help alleviate some of the air quality problems. But to do so it will require the population to embrace these more environmentally friendly cars as much as it has embraced change in other aspects of Chinese life. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

October 30, 1940 ~ April 25, 2015
I
t is with very sad hearts that Del’s family announces her passing on April 25, 2015 with family and friends by her side at the Palliative Care Unit at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Del’s valiant six month battle with stage four lung cancer came to an end on April 25, 2015. Her strong will to live, her positivity, and love and prayers from family and friends carried her through the last six months of grueling chemotherapy and radiation. Del was born October 30, 1940 in Trail, BC to Erminio (Butch) and Nina Bortolussi, the younger of two beautiful girls. Del is survived by her sister Geri, who resides in Deer Park, Washington. After graduating from J. Lloyd Crowe High School and working as a secretary at Cominco, she met her sweetheart, John Wolsey. The couple were married in 1964 and had two children. They were married 27 years before John passed away in 1991. Del was profoundly loved and will be sadly missed by her sister, Geri Watts; children, Tami (Dan) and Tony (Jenn); grandchildren, Joshua, Logan, Ethan, Cameron and Abigail; her cousins, nieces, nephews and beloved friends. Del loved working closely with the elderly for many years as a caregiver. She cherished her time over the last six years volunteering with Alzheimer and Dementia patients. Del loved animals and was frequently seen enjoying her favorite sport on television, soccer (football), or delving head first into a complex crossword puzzle with her crossword puzzle dictionary at her side. Known for her kindness and outgoing personality, some may be surprised to learn of her actual shyness. She possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor and laugh. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Del will always be remembered for her willingness to listen or help anyone who needed it, her overwhelming kindness, and her constant smiling and laughter. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital as well as the Palliative Care Unit staff. It was Del’s final wish not to have a funeral service. Those that met her, knew her, loved her, and were loved by her will most certainly never forget the immense joy she brought to all of our lives. We love you, Del! Her life can be summed up in these words: Our Angel that lived, laughed, and loved. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society and/or the Nanaimo SPCA. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032
Andrew John Rodocanachi April 29, 1961 April 3, 2015 Our beloved Andrew left us suddenly. In his too short life he experienced the world through extensive travel, exercised his many talents (carpentry, gardening, painting, pottery, writing, design) and had careers in social work, child education and photography. He is mourned by the Rodocanachi and Whelton families and his many friends. Special thanks to his nephew Noah and his Nanaimo ladies Pat McArthur, Linda Harvey and Liz Stewart-Jones from just a couple of his Vancouver ladies Christine Arcand and Hugette Gingras. All welcome at a Gathering of Remembrance, 821 Farquar St., Nanaimo May 9 from 11:00 am.
Bhan Kaur Shahi passed away peacefully at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on April 30, 2015. Bhan Kaur was born Nov. 4, 1925 in India. She came to Canada in 1958 and lived in Paldi BC for eight years before moving to Nanaimo in 1966. She is survived by her children, daughters - Harjit Budial (Raminder), Raminder, and Harmesh (Dave) and sons - Harb, Harjap (Jaswant), Paul, Terry and one sister, Amar Kaur Dhami. She was a loving grandmother who had an influential role in raising her grandchildren, Onkary, Kalvir, Neena, Dean (Leanne), Shawn (Sandra) Mark, Manisha, Annika and Soren. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Savannah, Xander, Chase and Harlyn. Our mother was a very generous and caring person. She enjoyed life and had a large circle of friends on the island. She devoted many years of service to the Community Sikh Temple. She will always be in our heart and we will miss her dearly. We would like to thank the doctors and the nurses at NRGH and the homecare support group for the care and attention provided to our mother. Funeral services will be at First Memorial Funeral Chapel on Bowen Road, Nanaimo BC on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 9:45 a.m. Cremation will be at the Cedar Valley Crematorium followed by lunch and prayer services at the Sikh Temple on Third Street, Nanaimo, BC. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Bhan’s memory to a charity of your choice. First Memorial Funeral Services 250-754-8333

June Margaret Lolk
Born in Edinburgh Scotland October 18, 1929 – Died from cancer, May 1, 2015 Nanaimo, British Columbia. Eldest child of George & Isabella Ingram (deceased). Surviving June is her husband Aage & 2 brothers (George & Gordon), 2 sisters (Greta & Gillian) from the UK. After graduating Portobello High School she worked for the Ministry of Fuel & Power & subsequently for a firm called Millar & Bryce, in the department of Searchers of Records. At 22 June emigrated to Canada & was one of the first women to work in the fingerprint Section of the Toronto Police Department. There she met & married her soul mate Aage Lolk on July 23, 1960. They moved to Coldwater & set up a flourishing manufacturing business of Lolk paddles & canoes. After a holiday here, they retired to Nanaimo in 1989. June was very social & was on the executive, or a member of many groups (Newcomers Alumni, Trilliums, Danish & bridge clubs). She excelled at gardening, entertaining & decorating seasonally. She was always impeccably dressed, with coiffured hair. June had many best friends & made us all feel like the favourite. We all loved kind June dearly & will miss her with all our hearts. Our condolences go out to her husband, Aage & her overseas family. A grateful thank you to all her physicians & palliative care staff. No service by June’s request.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To those who contribute to society through hard work, leadership, kindness, compassion, care, social activism, stewardship, volunteerism, philanthropy, art, entertainment, laughter, love or any or all of the above. BEEF To those who don’t feel any responsibility to do their share. BOUQUET To the remarkable young gentleman who found my credit card holder on the street. Your kindness, honesty and generosity by delivering it to my door truly merits recognition. BEEF To the gas stations in Nanaimo for charging more for gas than Comox, Duncan or Port Alberni. BOUQUET To Jennifer at Hair Mates for the very best bob cut I have ever had. Also for her honesty, kindness and caring nature. BEEF To the lady with the small boys at the lumber store who complained candy was by the checkout. I asked her where she bought her groceries. All stores have candy at their tills. BOUQUET To the homeowners on Yellow Point Road for keeping our area clean from litter for Earth Day. BEEF To the young woman who almost hit us at the crosswalk on Bowen Road and Dufferin Crescent. My wife and I consider this one of the most dangerous intersections in Nanaimo. Drivers, please watch for pedestrians. BOUQUET To Johnny, manager of Superstore bakery, for that extra bit of service. Much appreciated. BEEF To the Nanaimo Golf Club food and beverage workers. Being loud and obnoxious, while also disrupting traffic, is not appreciated in a residential area. BOUQUET To my staff at Harbour Air Seaplanes. Thank you for all your hard work. I do appreciate it and I look forward to a successful summer with you all.
BEEF If you are waiting in a doctor’s office and just can’t resist chatting with other patients waiting, use your inside voice. medical office assistants are trying to listen to the doctor’s dictation and have typing and other work to do. BOUQUET To Sue and friends for organizing the successful Daffodil Tea and Fashion Show for the Canadian Cancer Society. In her busy month, she was able to carry this through. BEEF To the very horrid, nasty person who did donuts in the delicate Harewood Plains. BOUQUET To Nolan at Slegg Lumber. Thanks for picking the fence posts for Cassidy delivery two days later. BEEF To the clinic with the worst lawn maintenance for truly stinking up the neighbourhood by the hospital. We all had a great gag. BOUQUET To our friend Shelby. You are such a fun and genuine person. You have created so many fun memories for all of us and we all love you so much. BEEF To the store that charges full membership price to belong and we don’t have a gas bar or propane fill-up station like the other Island stores. BOUQUET To Alexandra’s Bistro for making my 45th birthday a huge success. My family and friends said their food was excellent, considering it was all their first time eating Greek food. BEEF To my neighbour in the condo above who stomps, loudly agitating. Why do you continue to harass and bully? Agitating is actually a form of terrorism. BOUQUET To Ken at Petroglyph Park. We took notice of the hard and wonderful work at the entrance to the park. Also to Val who cut down all the brush. Over time our park has lost its beauty and maintenance – you have brought some back.
BEEF To the mobile home park. The garbage area could use a new fence and trees need to be trimmed. Potholes in driveways need to be filled. Our rent goes up but we don’t see anything done to benefit us. BOUQUET To Morrell Sanctuary for cleaning up Nanaimo Lakes Road. BEEF To those who have once again littered that stretch of road. You show not only a lack of respect for the environment but also for yourself. BOUQUET To Jordan at Country Grocer for locating a hard-to-find item. BEEF To the people who got a puppy that they have no time for. A dog needs to be walked daily, not kicked out the door into the yard before and after work, by itself, to sit and bark at the door. BOUQUET To Jim Murphy from Murphy’s Law, who helped me end a four-year battle with the phone company. Jim got them to remove the false debt and credit rating and the two gag clauses in the release.
BEEF To the person in charge of a seniors’ facility. It is really time for you to retire – you are too impatient, unwelcoming and this place needs better organization. BOUQUET To the very nice men who rescued us outside of Smitty’s restaurant. The seniors on our bus were very thankful to be on the road again after a morning out. BEEF To the ladies in Cedar-by-the-Sea who keep calling the fire department on neighbours for burning regulated fires. Taxpayers pay for false calls and take valuable family and work time from volunteers. BOUQUET To the young lady and her beautiful dog who stopped for me on Townsite Avenue and Bowen Road. BEEF To the irresponsible 13-year-old who came to my house to hang out with my son and shot my TV with a BB gun and lied about doing it so he wouldn’t be held responsible. Neither you nor your guardians will even apologize. BOUQUET to the young lady and gentleman who were my Good Samaritans when I fell on Chapel Street. BEEF To the appliance repair business. You force out an older, experienced woman to bring in your daughter. Nepotism is alive and well. BOUQUET To the students, staff and parents of McGirr Elementary School for their continued support of the Justin Smith Coin Drive and Scholarship Fund. A special thank you to Tyler and Brody for requesting donations for Justy’s coin drive in place of birthday gifts. BOUQUET to people who remain polite, even when those around them are so rude.

COLLEGE BASEBALL team wins last game of regular season, 21-12. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

If the last game of the season has any bearing on the playoffs, then the VIBI Mariners could be overpowering. Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Baseball Institute won its final game of the regular season, 21-12 on Tuesday in Alberta against the University of Calgary Dinos. “We were able to stick with it and score more than they did,” said Jordan Blundell, VIBI manager. The score might not have been a coach’s dream, but players could be forgiven for looking ahead – national championships start tonight (May 7). “We’ve played pretty good baseball here the last couple of weeks and we’re looking forward to getting into the playoffs,” Blundell said. “It’s something that we’re prepared for and we’re going in there no excuses and we’ll see what happens. We like our chances. Our guys are ready.” The Mariners won three out of four games this week in Calgary against the Dinos and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack to bring their record to an even .500 this spring. The M’s were able to earn splits the last two weekends of the season against the league’s best teams, reinforcement that they can play with anyone. That said, every team will bring its highest level to this week’s playoff tournament. The Mariners will be facing some bona fide aces. “You’ve got to battle those guys
hard and you’ve got to take advantage of mistakes and you’ve got to try to get to them early,” Blundell said. “You don’t want them to settle in and get a good flow going.” Quite a few VIBI hitters are swinging a hot bat after their 21-run effort, including Chad Schultz, who had six RBIs in that game, and Connor Merilees, who had five. The Mariners start the national championships the right way, playing the feature game tonight against the host Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs. VIBI will send out its ace, Nanaimo’s Kenton Schroter, the league’s strikeout king this season.
Quickfacts VIBI MARINERS won the Canadian College Baseball Conference championship in 2010 and since then, lethbridge’s Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs have won four straight national titles.
Blundell said VIBI’s pitching staff is deep, and said some guys are much more important to the team than their numbers might show. And regular-season numbers go out the window, anyway, as any player could be in position to be a playoff hero. “We’re at this point and now we can just relax and have fun and go see what we can do,” the manager said. “You need a couple bounces to go your way and you need a guy or two that maybe you didn’t expect to step up and deliver. I think we’ve got a bunch of guys here that are ready to be that guy.” For more information about the tournament, please visit www.ccbc. pointstreaksites.com. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

MOVIE LISTING AD
We think life’s milestones should be celebrated. Just not at Nanaimo Golf Club. On April 24th, Nanaimo Golf Club locked out two dozen servers, bartenders, cooks, dishwashers, janitors, and the Chef. That means very limited food and beverage service at the Club. It also means staff and their supporters are on the picket line. If you are planning to hold a wedding reception, party, business meeting, celebration of life or other important event at Nanaimo Golf Club, please contact us at Local40Campaign@gmail.com so we can help you move your event to another location.
Support the locked out staff. Please patronize another local venue or golf course until the Club brings staff back to work. WorkersAd(May6).indd 1

To win, the Buccaneers will need a mix of skill, size and speed, he said. “My coaching style is finishing every hit, defence-first hockey. So that’s going to be expected out of everyone on the team…” Lemmon said. “The kids are expected to be coming in in shape and working hard.” To read more, please visit www. nanaimobulletin. com/sports.
