Appeal court rules in favour of gov’t
Decision overturns previous rulings that Province infringed on teachers’ collective bargaining rights T R E VO R C R AW L E Y
An appeal court ruled in favour of the B.C government against the teachers’ union on Thursday in a legal dispute over class size and competition that dates back to 2002.
Thursday morning’s ruling was made in response to an appeal filed by the B.C. Government back in February on an earlier decision that sided with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, which concluded that the govern-
ment infringed on teachers’ collective bargaining rights. It was a split result, with four justices affirming the decision and one dissenting the ruling that examined the constitutionality of removing the right to bargain class size
and composition in legislation passed in 2002 and 2012. “In our opinion, the legislation was constitutional,” read the ruling. “Between the consultations and the collective bargaining leading up to the legislation,
teachers were afforded a meaningful process in which to advance their collective aspirations. Their freedom of association was respected.”

The Cranbrook Community Theatre Society was in council on Monday to give an update on the status of the organization. Terry Miller, from the society, said they usually come in to do a report every two years. The Studio is a 1,000 sq. ft.

thousands of Cranbrookers have attended classes or events of some description in this space,” Miller said. “This past summer we refinished the hardwood floors for the umpteenth and possibly the last time .” Miller noted it is getting thin.
The second floor of the building houses an 83 soft seated theatre venue — the Stage Door — where the society presents its theatre works. “It’s a very charming and intimate space,” he said. “It’s also a favourite for musical performances. A locals group for one has been using it for
decades. There have been a number of concert series taken place there. Travelling theatre groups and singer/ songwriters love to perform there. It is a really nice space.” Miller gave some the history of the building as well.

Patrick Baranowski and Tracy McGuire are Rollie and Daphne Waters in Cranbrook Community Theatre’s production of ‘Skin Flick,’ opening tonight.
The Porn industry by Mr. & Mrs. Middle Class Cranbrook Community Theatre’s production of ‘Skin Flick’ will add some sexy spice to your life Ba r ry Coulter
What happens when you, your wife and your best friend suddenly find yourselves unemployed? Don’t despair. There are always alternatives. Sometimes they just pop out at you. “Skin Flick,” Cranbrook Community Theatre’s ribald new comedy, which opens tonight, commences in the middle of the story, with a cast of characters already engaged in the enterprise that will turn their lives around. But almost immediately, our narrator, Rollie Waters (played by Patrick Baranowski), stops the action and brings us back to the beginning. He has a sense of order and propriety, after all. Rollie — who works in the costume industry — has a fabulous collection of bowties and a “Honey, I’m Home” nature from another era, like a gentle father from a 50s TV sitcom. As a narrator, he is omnipotent, speaking to the audience directly and even editing the speech of his fellow characters, to their perplexity. Rollie is married to Daphne (Tracy McGuire), who has a strong, determined streak, and comes across as the alpha in their relationship. And then there’s Rollie’s best friend Alex (Bob Wakulich), a leering, coarse, somewhat sleazy TV cameraman who is as unlike Rollie as chalk to cheese. And all at once, they’re all jobless — Rollie given his notice, Daphne turned down for a new job, and Alex fired. They are facing immense monetary pressures. What to do? A mistake in a movie rental reminds Alex — who should know — of how lucrative pornographic films can be — low initial investment, hot profits. This awakens Daphne’s entrepreneurial spirit, and the die is cast. Here we have a whole new outlook on the erotica industry — pornography as a Mom and Pop operation. And what an innuendo-filled delight it is. First off, actors are needed — actors who are prepared to lay it all on the line. Chance brings to the Waters’ door one Jill (Lisa Aasebo), singing telegram girl and an unemployed actress prepared for whatever comes up. She
signs on (for significant money and percentage points in movie sales). So far, so good. Now all this crew needs is a John Holmes. Who will the big man be? By accident, it turns out to be the hapless Byron Hobbs (Jerrod Bondy), who seems as unsuited to the role of a porn stud as he is to running the family bookie business. Nonetheless, he ends up being Jill’s choice for leading man. Let this blue movie get underway. Rollie continues the narration, though he is a little apart from the cinematography. He still has a few days of work left to complete, after all. In the meantime, Daphne is taking to her role as porn director with unexpected enthusiasm, Alex serves as the experienced guide into porn trade, and Jill and Byron — well, the talent has a lot a surprises up their sleeves. The whole literature, for want of a better word, of the porn industry lends itself to the comedy. Imagine the infinite series of puns that comprise porn titles, and you can bet that in “Skin Flick,” the puns and double entendres come thick and fast, with nonstop tumbling hilarity. There is a subtext — and Rollie as narrator is good enough to stop the action and explain it to us, the audience. Porn, of course, is sex mythologized, with everyone well endowed and satisfaction guaranteed. The reality is that everyday sex can be awkward, unfulfilling and a chore even married couples must work at — the pressures to perform, and all that. What a relief to talk about it, finally! But Rollie cuts all that short, and heads back to the movie-making. After all, there’s money to be made, and interesting new undercurrents are coming up in the characters’ relationships. “Skin Flick,” by Norm Foster, is directed by Bob McCue and produced by Kristy Quinn. It is a raucous, hilarious romp, so leave the kids at home and head to the Studio Stage Door in Cranbrook. “Skin Flick” opens tonight, Friday, May 1, and runs Saturday May 2, then May 6-9, and May 13-16. Tickets are available at Lotus Books.

Court rules in favour of Province Continued from page 1 The ruling reversed two decisions that had previously gone in favour of the BCTF. Reaction to the ruling was swift from both sides. “After today’s quick analysis, it seems that this ruling swings the power too far against workers’ rights,” said Jim Iker, president of the BCTF. “A government should not be able to just dictate what they want, simply talk to the union, and force it by legislation when there are collective agreements in place. “Collective bargaining needs to be about give and take… about respect and hard negotiations between employers and employees. Collective bargaining – real collective bargaining – is not about pre-determined outcomes.” He added the BCTF intends to take the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada. Peter Fassbender, the B.C. Education Minister, said he was pleased with the decision. “Along with last year’s historic six-year agreement, today’s decision gives us a unique opportunity to work with teachers to improve outcomes for students,” he said in a statement. “Since 2002, we’ve seen dramatic improvements in student outcomes, particularly for students with special needs – and teachers should be very proud of this. “Starting to move past this legal dispute allows everyone to focus on what matters most – working together to improve opportunities and outcomes for B.C. stu-
dents.” Responding for the Cranbrook and District Teachers’ Association, Shelley Balfour said she was upset with the court’s ruling. “I am profoundly saddened for the students of British Columbia today,” Balfour said. “For a brief moment, I thought maybe they could catch a break and their learning conditions would improve and my members’ working conditions could be restored to a manageable level. The government has the money – they need to spend it on our education system. “I am also extremely disappointed that the government now has even more power to undermine the rights of working people. Working and learning conditions were an integral part of our Collective Agreements and without them the students and educators are very negatively affected. I challenge the public to spend some time in a public school. It is definitely not like it used to be.” Frank Lento, the SD5 board chair, notes that there are no winners in the dispute, which has been the result of unfortunate circumstances. “Relationships have been injured, scarred and bruised during the past decade and a half and also with the recent labour negotiation that we got settled and hopefully it doesn’t continue to fester into hurt,” Lento said. “We have an excellent working relationship with our local union. We have some good people here.”

Studio Stage Door Continued from page 1 “Over the winter of 1908 and 1909 local masons erected a beautiful two-storied building to house their lodge or temple. By 1973, they realized they could no longer afford to heat and maintain the building, so they put it up for sale. The only person that was interested in buying it at the time was the Mount Baker Hotel to knock it down and put in a parking lot.” The members of the society, including Bud Abbott, among others, lobbied the council of the day to purchase the building. The council obliged and then immediately turned it over to the society to act as stewards. “CCT have taken their role as stewards very seriously and have put in well over $500,000 in improvements and upgrades over the years,” he said, adding that’s in addition to the thousands of volunteer hours that have also been invested in the building. In the past five years, the outside of the building has been painted, the HVAC system upgraded, ceiling insulation upgraded, a stairlift added, eaves troves and down spouts installed and re-carpeted the Stage Door lobby and stairs. The studio dance floor was also refinished. Miller said that totals $215,000 in the past five years invested in to the building. The city has provided $2,000 per year since 1974 to help with heating and maintenance costs for the building. In 2009, the city upped that to $3,000 a year.
The city also paid to reroof the building a couple of years ago. Miller said they continue to keep the building in good health and well used. “We’re constantly providing professional quality theatre productions and workshops to keep our community entertained, engaged and educated, and give them the opportunity to flex their performing muscles,” he said. Miller was also happy to see that all the members of council have been in the Studio Stage Door. “It’s not uncommon for me to present to a council and find that no one has been in that building,” Miller said. “It always amazes me when people come into the building and say ‘oh, this is really nice.’” He said some have been in Cranbrook all their lives and not visited the building. Coun. Ron Popoff said the society is doing a great job. He also asked about the rumour of the building being haunted. Miller said he’s spent countless hours alone in the building, often in the dark, and never had a run-in. “As an interesting side point to that, there was a baby born in that building, back to the days of the Masons. They had resident caretakers, whose daughter was born in that building.” The Cranbrook Community Theatre is also getting set for their upcoming play ‘Skin Flick’ which runs May 1 and 2, 6-9 and 13-16 (See more, page 2).

B.C. facing French Immersion teacher shortage: report T r e vo r C r awl ey
There is a critical need for French language teachers in British Columbia and the Yukon, according to a report from the Canadian Parents for French, which was released a week ago. In a survey of 86 school districts, a key finding from the report was that it is challeng-
ing to fill all available French immersion teaching positions with qualified teachers. “Nearly one third of all students in BC are enrolled in the Core French (CF) program,” read the report. “This proportion is largely a function of provincial legislation that requires all students in BC’s public education sys-
tem to learn an additional language between grades five and eight. “For a host of reasons, including financial incentives from the Federal Government, the language primarily offered is French. According to a 2007 study, 78 per cent of elementary school Core French teachers and 71 per
cent of those in middle school do not feel comfortable speaking French.” In terms of French programming in the Southeast School District, Superintendent Lynn Hauptman says that there are enough teachers for French Immersion programming. “Our situation right now is we do have
enough French Immersion teachers for our program, however, we don’t have much in the way of any reserves in terms of teaching TOC’s that can fill in for French Immersion teachers,” she said. “So that’s our biggest issue, is just not having those people here.” All the programs are ‘ w e l l - s u b s c r i b e d ’,
meaning that parents and students are interested in accessing French Immersion programming, she added. In SD5 and Cranbrook, programming runs from Kindergarten to Grade 12 that come with all kinds of educational benefits. “It gives them the ability to be fluent in a second language and in
this case, a second official language and that in itself is always a wonderful skill to have,” said Hauptman. “It’s for people that are interested in learning a second language or who’s parents want their children to have that flexibility of a second language and it’s great that we have that opportunity here in our district.”

Canada and the USA. This raffle, organized by Kimberley Arts Council’s Kimberley Kaleidoscope festival committee, gives residents and visitors to Kimberley the chance to own this powerful sculpture, valued at $2,000, for the price of a raffle ticket, just $20. There are only 150 tickets available, so the odds are pretty good. Rob works in his back yard studio in the converted garage of the home he shares with his wife, Heather Wattie, in Kimberley. Inside the converted garage studio he transforms found materials into unique, dynamic twoand three-dimensional sculptures which evolve as he plays with the materials to see where they will go. Working by hand on an anvil, using
a propane forge and electric welder, the forms he creates are only limited by the capacity of this equipment to cut, bend, and polish the materials. Toller started sculpting about 12 years ago as a recreational hobby when he lived in High River, Alberta. It was not until after he and Heather moved to Kimberley that he first exhibited any of his work in a public gallery. As
an emerging artist in 2011 he entered three pieces of steel sculpture in the Arts on the Edge adjudicated exhibition at Centre 64 and won two top prizes. He returned in 2012 as an established artist to again win a top prize. This was followed in 2013 by his first solo exhibition in the Gallery at Centre 64 in which he exhibited 29 sculptures in wood, steel, wire mesh and assorted other materials, 17 of which sold,
a record for the gallery. He followed this up with a top prize in the 2013 Arts on the Edge exhibition. Portal can be viewed in the lobby of the Centre 64 art gallery any afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the Centre 64 office during these hours or at Kimberley’s Farmers’ Market on Howard Street when it opens on June 25.

The Hole–y Bible, or the heart of God
O
ne of the blogs I peruse regularly is called God’s Politics. It comes from the Sojourners community, which was organized in the early 1970s in an inner–city neighbourhood in Washington DC. Led by Jim Wallis, this ministry focuses on the relationship between Christian faith and social and economic justice. Their mission is to “articulate the biblical call to social justice, inspiring hope and building a movement to transform individuals, communities, the church, and the world.” Jim Wallis writes that “One of our first activities was to find every verse of scripture about the poor, wealth and poverty, and social justice. We found more than 2,000 texts that we then cut out of an old Bible. We were left with a ‘Bible full of holes’ which I used to take out with me to preach.” A Bible full of holes. That’s what you get when you take social justice and economic issues out of the Bible. A hole–y Bible. Christian faith cares intensely about social justice issues in our world. Those who claim that Christianity is a private faith simply haven’t read their Bible. Let me give just a few examples. After learning she is to bear Jesus in her womb, Mary sings the Magnificat, which includes these lines “God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.” It echoes the song of Hannah in 1 Samuel 2 —“ He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from
the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour.” Near the end of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells a parable in which the righteous and the unrighteous are judged on this basis: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Both the righteous and unrighteous are surprised by this judgRev. Yme ment. When did we do this, Woensdregt or not do this? Jesus’ response is that “as you did it (or didn’t do it) to one of the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.” Israel’s prophets also thundered against the rich. In words that Martin Luther King, Jr would often use, Amos preached “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever–flowing stream.” Isaiah puts a rhetorical question in God’s mouth: “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?” I could go on and on. Just a few weeks ago, I discovered an interactive tool online which allows us to see how frequently a word is used in scripture. “Poor” and “poverty” appear 446 times in 384 sepa-
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
rate verses. “Wealth” can be found 1,453 times. “Justice” appears 1,576 times. On the other hand, “hell” only appears 237 times. “Heaven” shows up 771 times and such an important concept as “love” only 654 times. “Family values” or “believing Jesus is my personal Saviour” doesn’t appear at all. “Justice” is mentioned twice as many times as “love” or “heaven”, and seven times more often than “hell”. Isn’t that interesting? It seems obvious that justice is a pretty big deal to God. I’m inspired when I see movements which bring social justice to the fore. In a land of plenty such as Canada and the US, it’s a moral outrage that the gap between rich and poor is widening at an increasing rate. The richest one per cent in the US, for example, now pocket nearly 25 per cent of the nation’s income, and control more than 50 per cent of the total wealth. At the same time, the number of homeless people increases alarmingly. Justice issues are at the heart of Christian faith. Followers of Jesus are called to help end extreme poverty, combat greed, build a more equitable economy at home and abroad, eradicate malaria and other imminently curable diseases from the world, and heal the environment. Our faith is intensely this–worldly, loving the world with the same passion as God. If one is to believe the Bible, this is what is in the heart of God. Or perhaps you’d rather read a hole–y Bible? Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

T
he East Kootenay has long been known as one of the best hunting and fishing districts in North America. From the time of the earliest hunters and trappers to the days of the Wild Horse gold rush, white settlers soon discovered what the natives had known for millennia: if you’re looking for game, the East Kootenay is the place to go. Local Cranbrook resident Charles M. Edwards (for whom Edwards Street is named), wrote, in a letter of May 16, 1907, to Bryan Williams, Chief Game Warden of B.C., of the early days of hunting in the district: “It will be my endeavor to lay before you as fair an account as possible of conditions past and present … In 1886, the year in which I came to the south east Kootenay … it was the customs of the St. Mary’s, Windermere and Tobacco Plains Indians to go to Fisher River, now Jennings, Montana, for their fall hunt, and the last few days of October would see droves of empty pack horses driven across the International boundary for the fall hunt. The Indians would camp there and wait for the first snow, which brought the mule deer within easy distance of camp … They came in literally by the thousand … one would have to see them to believe that such numbers of deer still existed in one section. The deer were killed by the hundred, as 40 to each of the 75 to 100 hunters was by no means a high average, and the meat was dried and packed home for winter food. “The advent of the Great Northern [railway] was the means of bringing in white settlers and it was, I think, about 1896, that the first prosecution of B.C. In-
A day of hunting provided only a small part of the legal limit. – Cranbrook Prospector, 1911 dians was taken, and consequent on this the B.C. Indians had to hunt and endeavor to obtain an equivalent supply of winter food on their own side of the line … the hunting grounds being Gold Creek, Elk River, Morrissey, Elko, Sheep Creek and the Upper Kootenay and it is in all these sections that the fearful diminution in numbers is to be noticed.” This was not a revelation at the time. Indeed, the British Columbia government recognized the problem as being province-wide on July 1, 1905, by establishing the Department for the Protection of Game and Forests. Sadly, the number of game wardens was not equal to the size of the territory. It was akin to asking the needle to police the haystack. The fact that there was no real budget and that most the wardens were untrained volunteers did not help. The diminishing wildlife throughout the province was noted that same year when a provincial petition circulated calling for more stringent regulations as to the killing of game. At that time the single season limit for each hunter was five caribou (bull), five deer, two elk or wapiti (bull), two moose, five mountain goat, three mountain sheep (ram), 250 duck and 250 snipe. Non-residents, other than officers of his majesty’s army and navy, were required to purchase a $50 license,

and there were plenty of non-residents who did just that. By 1906, the old-timers were commenting that game had never been so scarce in the district. A suspension of beaver hunting was established in 1905, but the remainder of the animals remained vulnerable. The above letter from Charles Edwards was on behalf of a proposed East Kootenay game preserve. A Game Protective Association was already active in Fernie but it was a novel idea for the Cranbrook sportsmen. In April, 1908, a meeting was held at the Cranbrook Hotel to form such an association, with Messrs A. Leitch and C.M. Edwards duly elected as chairman and secretary, respectively. The concept met with a great deal of support
and a meeting the following week, supported by members of the Fernie group, saw a large turnout resulting in representatives chosen from Cranbrook, Fort Steele, Maryville, Wardner, Wattsburg, Moyie, Yahk, and Wolf Creek. It was agreed that members, most of them experienced hunters and fishermen, would do their best to see that all game laws were enforced and that any fines collected by members giving information would be turned over to the association. Further, the association agreed to seek provincial approval regarding the establishment of a game preserve and to meet with the provincial game warden to establish the district. This is where the Bronx Zoo comes into the picture. Not in the form of animals as one might suppose, but rath-
er in the form of William Temple Hornaday, the first director of the zoo under the New York Zoological Society (which later became the Wildlife Conservation Society). W. T. Hornaday (1854-1937), an American conservationist, taxidermist and author, was hired to create a world class zoo in New York in 1896 and Mr. Hornaday did just that. In 1905 he spent time in the East Kootenay wilds which not only resulted in a best-selling book, “Camp-Fires in the Canadian Rockies,” but the beginnings of what would become a serious campaign on his part to have a game preserve set aside in the East Kootenay. His countless letters and articles won him favour from prominent British Columbian politicians, landowners and the CPR, by stressing the advantages of the tourism generated through the enterprise. He worked closely for a time with the Fernie Game Protective Association although they differed on the location and size of the preserve. On Nov.15, 1908, B.C. established the Elk River Game Reserve, of approximately 450 square miles between the Bull and Elk Rivers using nearly all of Hornaday’s recommendations. As Hornaday stated “whoever aids in preserving from extinction the grand game of British Columbia renders good service to two countries.”

Around the corner Bandits finalize roster with season approaching
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
With the 2015 American Legion Baseball season on the horizon, Cranbrook Bandits head coach Paul Mrazek has finalized his roster. With 13 returning players at his disposal, Mrazek selected two fresh faces to add to the Bandits’ active roster along with three new recruits to the team practice roster. Joining the active crew are a pair of 14-year-olds. Carson Meggison and Shane Walker will provide a youthful infusion into the Bandits’ lineup heading into the 2015 campaign. “These guys, they’ve got the arm strength. They’ve got good velocity. They can throw the distance that’s needed at this level,” Mrazek
said. “They can throw with the speed that’s needed at this level to make plays. Their direction is good. Their fundamentals on fielding grounds balls and fly balls were the highest.
“They have pretty good swings. We’re going to be changing their mechanics a little bit and perfecting things. At the plate, they have good balance and they have good hands.” Mrazek said he envisions both Meggison and Walker suiting up in the infield, as well as throwing off the mound this season. still to be determined as Mrazek stressed the importance of inserting players into positions where they are comfortable at an early age. The practice roster will be filled out by Hayden Mastel, Linden Meggison and Parker Thompson. In total, Mrazek looked at 10 hopeful players over the course of tryouts spanning April 22 through 24 in both Cranbrook and Kimberley. With the roster set, focus turns to preparations for the team’s season-opening tournament scheduled for May 9 and 10 in Libby, Mont. The Bandits’ first practice is slated for May 5. “First thing is base-running,” Mrazek said. “It’s great if we get on base, but it’s no good if we don’t know what we’re doing running the

Boxing’s richest fight Tim Dahlberg Associated Press
LAS VEGAS - His middle name is Money, or used to be before Floyd Mayweather Jr. stopped flashing $100,000 wads of cash every time he saw camera. That doesn’t mean money is far from his mind. Not now, when he’s the richest man in the richest fight ever. Mayweather has spent as much time this week talking about the mansion in Las Vegas, home in Miami and private jet that seats 14 than he has about Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather proved smart in signing for a fight that will likely earn him $180 million or more. But the smartest thing he may have done was delay the fight five years so it would be must-see TV, even at a record price of $99.95. “Five years ago this was a $50 million fight for me,” Mayweather said, “and a $20 million fight for him.” The frenzy for boxing’s biggest event of the century continued to build Wednesday, even if the two fighters were very subdued. They ap-
peared at a final prefight press conference with nothing bad to say about each other, and couldn’t even bring themselves to scowl for pictures. If the past five years were personal, with the two camps trading barbs, the fight is not. Pacquiao will be fighting for his legacy and a country desperate for him to win, while Mayweather will be fighting to add to his already substantial bank accounts. That was apparent when Mayweather was asked if being undefeated was the biggest motivation for him. “At the end of the day my daughter can’t eat no zero,” Mayweather said of his unbeaten mark. “She can’t spend a boxing ring.” Money shouldn’t be a problem for the Mayweathers after this fight. Not with total revenue of some $300 million - and possibly more if the payper-view is the hit network executives think it will be. Mayweather won’t be the only one getting rich. Pacquiao will also share in the $120 million or so his side will pocket for the fight.

Crosby named Canadian captain at worlds CANADIAN PRESS
Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby will serve as Canada’s captain at the world hockey championship. General manager Jim Nill also announced Thursday that Dan Hamhuis of the Vancouver Canucks and Jason Spezza of the Dallas Stars will serve as alternate captains. The world cham-
pionship begins Friday in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic. Crosby, of Cole Harbour, N.S., was the captain of Canada’s Olympic-champion squad in 2014 in Sochi, Russia, and scored the overtime winner to lead the Canadian team to gold at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. Hamhuis, of Smithers, B.C., will play in his
sixth world championship. He helped Canada win gold in 2007 and silver in 2008 and 2009 while also being a member of the Canadian 2014 Olympic squad. Spezza, a Toronto native, will also make his sixth world championship appearance, winning silver in 2008 and 2009. He also helped Canada capture the 2012 Spengler Cup.
NFL’s Dolphins exercise option on QB Tannehill ASSOCIATED PRESS
DAVIE, Fla. - The Miami Dolphins have exercised their fifth-year, $16.2 million option on QB Ryan Tannehill’s rookie contract for 2016. The Dolphins announced the move,
which had been expected, hours before the NFL draft began Thursday. Tannehill was the eighth overall pick of the 2012 draft. He has started every game in his first three NFL seasons and improved each year. Last season he threw for
4,045 yards with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and his passer rating was 92.8. The 2016 salary will be a big increase for Tannehill after making a total of $12.7 million in the first four years of his contract.

The Cranbrook Lacrosse Association is set to kick off its 2015 season with the Kootenay Box Lacrosse Festival Sunday, May 3 at the Kinsmen Arena and Memorial Arena. “It’s a great way to continue the development of lacrosse in the Kootenays,” said Cranbrook Outlaws coach Russ Sheppard. “Lacrosse is the perfect off-season sport for hockey and, based on its current growth, is on its way to becoming very popular in the region.” The Outlaws are set to host teams from the West Kootenay and Elk Valley, with youth aged eight to 16
in action across novice, peewee, bantam and midget divisions. The all-day tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning and runs through the final tilt of the day, which features the Bantam Outlaws taking on Elk Valley at 4:30 p.m. at the Memorial Arena. In addition to the all-day lacrosse festivities, there will be a barbecue on-site all day, with food available by donation. Following this weekend’s home festival, all ages of Outlaws will travel to Red Deer, Alta., May 15 to 18 for the 24th annual Red Deer Tradition Lives Lacrosse Tournament.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You will need to defer to others in order to accomplish anything. You might be surprised by how helpful a touch of wit and humor can be. Someone of authority could be very controlling. You will surprise this person with your unpredictability. Tonight: Uncork your imagination. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You could overextend yourself in an effort to turn a situation around. Call a loved one who cares a lot about you. Work with what appears to be a far-out idea; you’ll see the positives with ease. Someone you respect proves to be more rigid than you thought. Tonight: Join friends. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your originality mixed with ingenuity will prove to be today’s problem-solver. You might choose to keep many of your judgments to yourself, as they will not help move a situation forward. Your smile and wit make the impossible nearly possible. Tonight: Be a wild
thing. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You seem to be coming from an anchored position. Others see where you are coming from and naturally will want to delegate more responsibility to you. Be willing to say “no” if it could have a negative impact on the quality of your personal life. Tonight: TGIF with a favorite person. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Listen to news from various sources. It could be difficult to get only the facts. By the end of the day, you might be chuckling at the many different versions attached to one event. Recognize your limits, especially with your daily life. Tonight: At a favorite haunt. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Before you head out, be sure to balance your checkbook. A mistake made now easily could mar not only the weekend but also other future happenings. Once you know the lay of the land, you will feel better. Make time for an important discussion. Tonight: Your treat!
Tundra
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Tap into the energy around you in order to draw in more of what you want. Listen to news, and be direct in what you choose to do. Honor a change, and you will be far better off than you originally had thought. Tonight: All smiles wherever you are. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Intuitively you know it is best to maintain a low profile. The people you care about will seek you out anyway. You’ll want to avoid some strong headwinds from an associate who must have it his or her way. Let it go for now. Tonight: Reach out to a friend at a distance. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to gain a better understanding of the dynamics between you and someone else. Emphasize the importance of your friendship, no matter what is occurring. Detach, so that you don’t trigger this person. Listen to what he or she has to say. Tonight: Accept an offer. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) One-on-one relating draws in positive results. You might
feel as though you can handle a problem and get past it with ease. Open up to different possibilities more often; you are sure to like the outcome. Tonight: Be the ringmaster of the party. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Reach out to someone at a distance. This person will be thrilled to hear from you, even if he or she gives you some flak. Examine what is going on behind the scenes that allowed a situation to become more difficult than need be. Tonight: Feel as free as a bird. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might want to be more expressive than you have been in a while. Your way of handling a problem, with the help of a key person in your life, is likely to work. Let others know how closely knit you are, as it will explain some of your choices. Tonight: Dinner for two. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My youngest son is engaged to “Carol,” a lovely young lady. My oldest son, “Mitch,” lives out of state with his partner, “James.” Both are in the wedding party. Carol has known Mitch for years, is well aware that he’s gay and has no problem with it. However, I’m relatively sure her parents don’t know, and I’m of the opinion that they need to be told before the big event. I’ve tried to casually bring it up with Carol several times, and she always smiles and says, “Don’t worry about Mom and Dad,” and then changes the subject. The truth of the matter is, I don’t worry about them. They are charming people and pillars of the community. But I don’t want them to be shocked at the wedding when meeting the gay brother and his same-sex spouse. Mitch and James are not into public displays of affection, but they’re obviously not going to ignore each other. Considering the idiotic things people can say, I think Carol’s parents need to be prepared. At my daughter’s wedding years ago, an uncle of her new husband cornered her at the reception and strongly suggested she consider adoption “just in case it’s hereditary.” I’m considering inviting Carol’s mother to lunch and laying the cards on the table, but my other kids insist I need to stay out of it. Even James, who basically agrees with me, says it has to be Carol’s decision. Is he right? Carol’s parents are going all out for this wedding, and I wouldn’t want a surprise like this to upset them. What to do? -- Mother of the Groom Dear Mother: Your heart is in the right place, but you are talking to the wrong people. Your soon-to-be-married son is the person who should talk to Carol if he thinks her parents need this information in advance. And while surprises should be kept to a minimum at weddings, we don’t really see a problem here. Mitch and James won’t be doing anything disruptive, and there’s nothing you can do about ignorant people like your daughter’s uncle-in-law. You are over-thinking this. Relax. Trust your son and his bride to handle the details, whatever they are. Dear Annie: I have a quick tip for your readers: My wife and I receive a lot of junk mail. I take all of the junk envelopes, whether they have been opened or not, put a rubber band loosely around one end, stick a pencil or pen under the rubber band, and leave them where my wife and I write notes or grocery lists. This works great. We haven’t bought note pads in a year. -- The Villages, Fla. Dear Villages: For folks on a budget, this is a great way to have spare notepaper handy while recycling. Thanks for the suggestion. Dear Annie: “Cringing in Exercise Class” pointed out the annoyance of chewing gum while exercising. Gum chewing is dangerous during all sports activity. I am particularly concerned when I witness children and others doing so in the swimming area. As a water safety instructor, I have had to deal with some scary, life-threatening episodes. -- No Gum In the Pool, Please Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Campaign to wipe out polio has never been in such a strong position Helen Branswell Canadian Press
The nearly three-decades-long battle to wipe out polio is making significant progress and may be poised for success, leaders in the campaign said Thursday. “Our consensus in the polio community is that we’ve never been in a better place to hold hopes of being able to eradicate this disease once and for all,” said Peter Crowley, UNICEF’s head of polio, during a media briefing on the state of the program. Crowley and others quickly noted, though, that it is too soon to declare victory. All who have worked on the polio program know that with this wily virus, complacency is a dangerous state of mind. Too often gains have been followed by devastating setbacks. To date this year there have only been 23 cases of polio recorded, in only two countries Pakistan and Afghanistan. Last year at this time there had been 68 cases spread over eight countries. Adding to the optimism is the fact that Nigeria has not reported a single case in more than eight months. Africa’s most populace country is one of three remaining countries where polio is considered endemic, meaning spread there has never been completely snuffed out. Viruses from the endemic countries sometimes spill over into neighbouring nations sometimes even coun-
tries far afield - and ignite outbreaks. If Nigeria goes 12 months without a case, it will come off the endemic countries list, leaving only Afghanistan and Pakistan as places where polio viruses are spreading. A further indication that transmission may have stopped in Nigeria is the fact that the country has not found wild polio viruses in the sewage surveillance system it operates. People infected with polio shed viruses in their stool; a number of countries test sewage for polio viruses as a way to enhance surveillance. “We have never gone anywhere near this long without any wild polio virus isolated from either Nigeria or of course Africa,” said Jay Wenger, director of the polio program for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the partners in the eradication effort. To date smallpox is the only human disease that has ever been eradicated. Buoyed by the success of that program, four partners embarked on a bid to rid the world of crippling polio in 1988. Their goal was to complete the task by the year 2000. The four original partners were the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the service club Rotary International. The Gates Foundation joined the fight later on. The current target for extinguishing polio is the end of this year.
