Free plaza parking comes to an end ALISTAIR TAYLOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Lawrie Bowles found this pink slip on his vehicle last week warning him that free overnight parking in Tyee Plaza will not be tolerated. The Quadra resident works in town and is supportive of the plaza owners’ right to expect a reasonable fee for providing the space for commuters who want to cut down ferry costs.
Plaza to get into your car and drive to work is very convenient. But that free ride or, more correctly, free parking, may be coming
to a halt. “What we’re finding is that at midday, the parking lot, it’s full. There’s no room for clients of the mall to
park,” said Mary-Jean Jacobsen, Director of Property Management for the Tyee Plaza. “The tenants have asked us to be more stringent.”
By Monday, however, plaza management had softened their stance slightly, indicating they’re willing to

When you finally find a vacant parking spot in Tyee Plaza it can feel like you’ve landed on the Monopoly board’s free parking space. Of course, there’s no jackpot coming your way, just a short walk to work, a shop or the Quadra ferry. But the management of the Tyee Plaza has served notice that it’s no longer going to serve as the free parking square in “Campbell Riveropoly,” beginning with vehicles parking overnight. Over the last couple of weeks, security personnel at the plaza have been papering windshields with a pink flyer warning that overnight parking at the plaza will no longer be tolerated starting May 4. For one Quadra Island commuter, Lawrie Bowles, that is an understandable but inconvenient development. “The owner of the Tyee Plaza has decided to go out and evict all the overnight parking,” Bowles said. “It’s been heavily used for years by Quadra people. For years.” Parking in the plaza has always been taken for granted by not only Quadra commuters but also Campbell River residents shopping or working downtown. Even though the city provides two free parking lots up against the bluff along Cedar and Dubeau streets, people still like to park in the Tyee Plaza because it is so central and convenient. If you live on Quadra Island, bringing a vehicle over can cost you $23.90, compared to $10.30 for the walk-on fare. Being able to walk off the ferry, cross the street to Tyee

tion is the interpretation of a covenant put in place when the Tyee Plaza was built in 1961 that requires it to provide “reasonable” access to the public for parking (see side bar). The plaza was built on filled in foreshore and for that privilege of alienating beach habitat, the Province of British Columbia placed the covenant. Unfortunately for the plaza owners, they’re caught in the middle of what was considered almost a right in Campbell River. “Unfortunately, we’re going to be the bad guy,” Jacobsen said. But she wants the community to realize that the
accommodate Quadra Island commuters who park in the plaza overnight. But it is going to cost a fee and require a permit. What’s happening is that something residents and commuters took for granted is no longer going to be tolerated. “Part of it is habits (have to) change,” Jacobsen said. What’s also changing is an apparent increase in the use of the plaza by drivers. This is surprising considering that nearly half the plaza is vacant. “The lot is very often full,” Jacobsen said. A further complica-
plaza is playing a part in bringing services and more new development to Campbell River as it pursues commercial and other tenants. The plaza has plans to demolish the former Super Valu store and build on that site. This will cut into the available parking in the plaza as well as place more demand on the remaining spaces. Bowles, meanwhile, is sympathetic to the plaza’s plight and is willing to pay a reasonable amount for the privilege of parking there. “That’s something we would go for,” Bowles said. “As long as it’s something reasonable.”
ALISTAIR TAYLOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Drivers who feel they have a right to park in the Tyee Plaza… do, actually. But how much of a right, may be put to the test in coming weeks and months. You see, back when the Tyee Plaza was built, it required permission from the province to fill in tidal foreshore in order to create the shops and the large, convenient, central parking lot that Campbell Riverites have considered almost a birthright for over 50 years. In return, the province placed a covenant on the parking area of the property stating that the owners needed to provide free public parking to the public. “The covenant is actually with the province and previously there hasn’t really been any enforcement
or whatnot done by the new property owner and so this hasn’t been an issue before,” said Elle Brovold, property manager with the City of Campbell River. The city is not responsible for the parking in any way, other than as an interested observer, Brovold said. The covenant is held by the province’s Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations. The issue is how extensive that parking access was intended to be. Was it completely open – park as long as you like – or is it limited? “That’s the concern because it is 55 years old or whatnot…pretty old and it’s written on some very old paper,” Brovold said. “They said basically there has to be reasonable access provided and whenever you have that word reasonable it is open to some inter-
pretation there.” Brovold said the city has been in discussion with the plaza owners and the province as a result of inquiries from the public after notice was given about the change of parking policy. “The city isn’t very clear on what restrictions would apply if any,” she said. Mary Jean Jacobsen, director of property management for Tyee Plaza, does not believe the covenant requires them to provide parking to the community. “I mean there’s a covenant in place but the interpretation of the covenant…I’m not qualified to determine how that’s interpreted,” Jacobsen. “The covenant’s not clear.” Jacobsen pointed out that there is free parking provided by the city in other lots downtown.

Stranded teens return from Nepal J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A pair of Campbell River teens are back at home this week, following a harrowing week in Nepal triggered by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the country April 25. Aidan Anderson and Tyler Kelly, both 18, were hiking a remote mountain trail on the way to see the base camp for climbers of Mount Everest when the quake struck, triggering avalanches all around them. “Aidan said they were on the hardest part of the trail that day, near the edge of a cliff,” his mother, Denise Henley, said. “First they felt the ground shaking, and then they heard a loud thunder. Then the cliff edge in front of them, he said, just exploded.” In the company of two other hikers and a local Sherpa guide, Anderson and Kelly managed to complete their trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, the final jumping-off point for climbers bound for the world’s tallest mountain. There, in a village without a road or
functioning airstrip, they were stranded, battling illness, conflicting advice and dwindling resources until finally hiking the 10 hours back to Lukla and its tiny airstrip Friday. From there they caught a flight to the capitol city of Kathmandu and flew into Vancouver late Sunday morning, where they were met by their families in an emotional reunion. The lifelong friends, soccer teammates and 2014 Carihi graduates were in Nepal as part of a larger, months-long trip that began in New Zealand and had included stops in Thailand and Malaysia. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, which has claimed more than 7,000 lives and injured twice as many more, Henley and Shari Jensen, Kelly’s mother, waited 13 hours to find out their sons’ fate. The young men finally contacted their families through Facebook Messenger, and the social media outlet would remain the lifeline between the Nepalese village and their Campbell River homes as the

mothers scrambled to contact embassy, aid and rescue officials in an effort to help Anderson and Kelly. Initially, they were told to urge the teens to stay in Namche Bazaar until a rescue could be mounted. With the risk of aftershocks and the unstable terrain, the trail

for Canadians in remote regions of the country. By last Tuesday, three days after the quake, Canadians in Nepal were urged, instead, to make their way by the safest method possible to Kathmandu, where Canadian Forces C-17 transport planes were evacuating those who
wished to leave. Anderson took ill and was virtually bedridden for two days. Eventually, though, the two made the decision to hike out on their own. By Friday morning they had reached Lukla and had scheduled a flight from there to Kathmandu — and from there to home.

SD72 marks historic Aboriginal Ed agreement J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Against a cultural ceremonial backdrop of singing, dancing and complimentary speeches, School District 72 and First Nations leaders renewed their commitment to young learners with the signing of their historic fourth Enhanced Aboriginal Education Agreement. “Today is an historic occasion, the signing of our fourth enhancement agreement,” said Tom
Longridge, SD72 superintendent, after thanking the Laich-kwil-tach First Nations for hosting the gathering on its traditional territories. “We are extremely proud that SD 72 is one of an elite few districts that have finalized their fourth agreement.” The EA process was approved by the Ministry of Education starting in 1999, and Campbell River School District was in the first wave of districts across the province recognized with the

five-year pact. The district is one of three in the province to sign agreements that first year, with the Okanagan and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows districts. The agreement was developed through input from the local Aboriginal Education Advisory Council in community meetings, forums and surveys, and facilitated in part by Greg Johnson, SD72 principal for aboriginal education. It was adopted by members of the Campbell River, Cape Mudge, Homalco, Klahoose and Kwaiakah First Nations, the Kwakiutl District Council, the Laichwiltach Family Life Society, Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal

cil (no relation to Susan Wilson) said that partnership extends well beyond those 35 years. “I was told of our history growing up in Cape Mudge,” he said. “Back in the 1920s the chiefs of the day made the transition from big houses to the modern day houses and had electricity running to our village before Campbell River did. “My grandfather and his generation fought for our children to go to regular schools and not residential schools. And my uncle, 30 years ago, was part of the people who put all this together. I know, because I was there, and watched it.” The agreement sets out a series of five goals, which are build into the district’s strategic plan. Those goals focus not only on academic improvement and expanded access and opportunity for aboriginal students, but a recognition and celebration of their heritage, culture and history within the larger student body. “As stated in the agreement, we’re proud to acknowledge the formal relationship of trust and shared responsibility, focussing on meaningful success for all learners,” said Longridge. SD72 has an Aboriginal student population of 1,113, which represents 21 per cent of the total number of students in the district. In the past five years, the six-year completion rate for Aboriginal students in the district has climbed from 56 per cent in 2009-10 to 64 per cent in 2013-14, which is higher than the provincial average.

Our View
Lottery process raises questions The potential winner of a $50 million lottery ticket that was sold in Langley in March, 2014 wants to stay anonymous. That’s according to an anonymous source who spoke to a Vancouver newspaper. The source went on to say that the ticket holder (who isn’t the lottery winner yet, as B.C. Lottery Corporation says it is still conducting an investigation of all circumstances around the winning ticket) has retained a lawyer and will be fighting in court for the right to remain anonymous. Word of this desire for anonymity fits in with the other circumstances around this ticket. Despite many pleas, the potential winner only came forward a few days before the one-year deadline to redeem the prize. The news that the apparent holder of a $50 We say: Will million winning ticket BCLC allow wants to be anonymous winner to avoid has naturally started lots of conversations. Most the limelight people may not be aware that claiming a lottery prize comes with the proviso that the BCLC has the right to take the winner’s photo and publicize the win. While BCLC says this protects the integrity of the process, which it does, it also helps to promote the idea that winning big is possible. It perpetuates the sales pitch that “dreams can come true” simply by buying a lottery ticket. Advertising promoting that idea does not include the actual odds of winning a big prize, which are infinitesimal. Very few lotteries run by provinces or states in North America allow for anonymity, although a few do. BCLC has granted anonymity itself in the past, but only in very rare and exceptional circumstances. It will be interesting to see if the holder of this potentially winning ticket does manage to preserve his or her anonymity. If that does happen as a result of a court decision, it may force BCLC and, quite likely other Canadian lottery corporations, to change their longstanding rules about who can actually win a prize. — Black Press
Letters ● Artificial turf doesn’t fit with city’s green goals Campbell River seems to have developed a split personality of late. On the one hand is the desire to be “natural.” There is a huge effort to restore the land in the estuary, get rid of invasive species and return to the natural state. Organic community gardens springing up, water conservation is mandated, and we have an environmental department, which has championed the installation of a green, living roof on city hall, installation of composting facilities and offers lessons in how to compost. Yard wastes are picked up and composted. The fleet of city vehicles is going green with hybrid vehicles coming on stream, Charging stations for electric vehicles are springing up. The foreshore will be made back to a natural beach. Great stuff! What happens next? We turn our natural turf playing fields into artificial fields? Is this consistent? Lets look deeper. Artificial fields are basically plastic. They Continued on Pg. 7

Here’s to making our roads safer The intersection of Shoppers Row and 13th Avenue was recently converted from a twoway stop to a four-way stop. I like it. Way to go, city! I think it’s long overdue, especially considering the other entrance to Tyee Plaza, at the intersection of Shoppers Row and 10th Avenue, was changed to a four-way stop last year. It’s about time the other one was converted too. For those who aren’t sure where I’m talking about, it’s the entrance/exit to Tyee Plaza next to the new Comfort Inn, and which is directly across from 13th Avenue. It’s always been a sketchy intersection. Many times as I’ve gone to pull out of Tyee Plaza it’s been difficult to see if cars are coming to my left because

The 30 km per hour sign for vehicles traveling west-bound is near some tall bushes and it doesn’t stand out very well. It would have been helpful if the city had put up some signs warning that the speed limit up ahead has been changed, or made the new signs splashier. Having said that, I do commend the city for making the effort to make our roads safer. To me it’s common sense to slow down on that stretch of road, but not everyone thinks the same way or maybe the thought just never crossed their mind. Some people just need a gentle reminder.

City declares war on Canada geese KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
City council has committed to spend up to $5,000 to track thousands of non-native Canada geese that are flocking to the Campbell River estuary and “destroying” the environment. Coun. Charlie Cornfield told council April 20 that while there are roughly 100 to 150 local Canada geese, each summer around 1,100
non-native geese also congregate in the estuary to lose and replace flight feathers, a process known as moulting. “Those subsequent 1,100 to 1,200 birds are destroying the islands in the estuary which is habitat for fish and other wildlife species as well as the plant vegetation – they eat it,” Cornfield said. “When they do that, they pull the roots out and then de-stabilize the soil.”
Cornfield added that it’s been documented by wildlife biologists that “damage to habitat by (the geese) consuming huge quantities of plant material is contributing to erosion of the islands and adversely affecting juvenile salmon, migratory birds and many other species that use estuarine habitat.” Cornfield said that in order to do the control work necessary to protect the estuary, it first needs to be determined
where the birds are and where they’re coming from. And that’s where the $5,000 comes in. The Campbell River Environmental Committee, the Nature Trust of BC, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Campbell River Indian Band are working together on a goose banding program. The cost to implement the program is $26,600

are plastic pellets, treated with chemical, dyed, extruded, twisted, and sewn in a huge energy gobbling industrial plant. Chemstrand (later renamed Monsanto) made the first artificial turf. Yes, that would be the same company of Round-up and biological engineering notoriety. Another giant chemical company 3M then got in the business. Later entrants are from China.

After the artificial ingredients are finished, they are essentially chemically inert, except for the fill that gives them resiliency, generally ground up rubber tires the production of which in itself is a huge industrial process. Contrast this with grass turf which is grown locally and which breathes in CO2 and releases oxygen. The CO2 is removed from the atmosphere and the carbon sequestered as
“grass”. It stays that way until the grass ultimately rots down into compost, which just happens to be a great material to add to those new “organic gardens” we are building. Is someone at city hall missing something here? Is that something some sober thought about where the city is going, what we want to be or is it trumped by a consuming desire that sports teams get more days of practice? Has anyone
realized that with appropriate drainage, permeable sub bases and new varieties of grass that natural fields can do most everything those artificial fields do? As a bonus, natural fields are more self-cleaning. Where does dog doo and deer or coon poop go on an artificial field? In a natural turf field, the residues break down and fertilize the grass. and involves capturing the geese in the summer when the birds have moulted their feathers and can’t fly. “They would be fitted with plastic neck collars and banded. By adding tags on them, then you can track their movements,” Cornfield said.
“If funding can be secured, experienced professionals will work with volunteers to place 200 neck bands on the geese when they are moulting. “To me it’s a really good project. I think it’s a good thing.” Cornfield added that
the Environmental Committee is confident that with the funding from the city, the organization can leverage the remaining $13,000. The City of Campbell River’s portion of the money will come from council’s contingency account.

Answering common health questions from women 1. I am a teenager with terrible PMS and I don’t want to take the birth control pill that my doctor recommends as I am not sexually active. Dr. P: PMS is a combination of symptoms that may include irritability, headaches, breast tenderness and painful menstrual periods. I often recommend that you take good doses of calcium with magnesium. Even taken every hour during the first day of the period can really help with menstrual cramps. Magnesium is also great for general PMS symptoms and headaches. Other symptoms are best treated with herbs such as black cohash and helonias that can help the function of your ovaries and uterus. There are many options aside from oral contraceptives to treat your PMS. 2. have a medicated IUD. What concerns do you have about the long term use of these? Dr. P: These IUD’s are usually medicated with “progestins” which are the same hormones used in the HRT trial that was stopped in 2002 due to increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack and breast cancer. I encourage patients to avoid these synthetic progestins even into menopause. I recommend the copper IUD instead. 3. I have been diagnosed with infertility. What can naturopathic

6. I have had a lot of mammograms since I turned 40 and I am concerned about having any more? What do you recommend? Dr. P: There certainly is a lot of controversy about mammograms so I offer patients “thermography” as an option to evaluate functional changes in the breast before pathology sets in. A temperature evaluation of the breast is taken using infrared technology and “inflammatory” processes are evaluated. If there are suspicious results then an ultrasound of the breast is recommended and naturopathic treatments begun in the meantime. 7. I have been on
bisphosphonate drugs for osteoporosis for several years now but I want to get off them, what can naturopathic medicine offer me? Dr. P: Naturopathic protocols have shown steady improvements on DEXA bone density scans over several years of treatment and we see very few fractures in our patients. Bashing the broom in Campbell River just got a bit more eco-friendly. Greenways Land Trust hosted its annual Broom Bash, a volunteer cutting of Scotch broom, and more than 40 residents attacked the invasive shrub along the Myrt Thompson trail under sunny skies Saturday. But they didn’t need to bring trucks to haul off the cuttings. “We’re using a new technique this year, called chop and drop,” said Cynthia Bendickson, Greenways acting operations manager. “We’re asking people to cut the plants into smaller pieces and leave them on the ground.” The chopped bits of plant material then form a natural mulch and decompose over time. There is no risk of reseeding or re-growth, Bendickson said. The plants are cut while flowering, well before seeds have formed, and new shoots will not emerge from the short stumps left behind. Pre v iously, ent ire plants were piled for pick-up and removal to Campbell River Waste Management Centre.

Charitable organization suffering parking headaches KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Charmin Shannon, who is known for helping others, is reaching out to the city for some help of her own. As the coordinator of Meals on Wheels, Shannon, along with the help of volunteers, delivers hot, freshly made meals to the doors of ill and aging residents of Campbell River. The program is run rent-free out of the back of the Island Health building at 930
Island Highway, across the street from Robert Ostler Park. While t he space allows Shannon to carry out the office end of the Meals on Wheels program, it also comes with parking challenges. “We work a 3.5 hour shift,” Shannon wrote in a letter to city council. “Parking rules are two hours around 930 Island Highway. “When I am dealing with families who are trying to figure out how to look after their aging parents; who are
distressed at the overwhelming issues of care that has fallen in their hands…I can’t go move my car because my cell phone alarm goes off and reminds me it is time to car hop,” Shannon added. She said that she’s even been issued a couple of parking tickets because she’s been with a client and not in a position to go and move her car. Shannon said the Meals on Wheels board voted to pay for one of the tickets after she let it slip that she had
received a second parking ticket. The other issue facing Shannon on an almost daily basis is the fact there are no allocated parking spaces in the lot where she works. Which means she often is making a long trek to her car with meal coolers and containers that have been dropped off at the office. “This makes it difficult to park in the all-day parking areas at the Visitor Centre or behind the old post office (in Tyee Plaza)

at how we deal with it. That we don’t set another precedent. This is what I’d like staff to look at.” Shannon said she would like to see the city provide Meals on Wheels with a parking pass that would allow its employees to park for up to four hours. “Some sort of permit that can be placed in our vehicles for exceptions to the two hour parking rule,” Shannon said. “This will allow us to not have emotional encounters with our townsfolk interrupted by a cell phone alarm and our sheepish apologies and explanations to people when they ask what the alarm is for.”

Community shows heart in annual benefit walk J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Organizers of the 30th annual Walk for Hearts credited good advance advertising for pushing participation to more than 110 walker Sunday in Willow Point. On the other hand, the brilliant, sunny weather may have had something to do with it. Put on by the Campbell River Open Heart Society, the walk raised $7,436 with more donations still coming in. “We’ve raised over a quarter-million dollars for cardiac equipment, cardiac nurses’ training and tech courses,” said co-organizer Ed Jarvis, himself a heart surgery survivor. “But our main focus is on patients, esp e ci a l ly chi ldren and their families who require help traveling for treatment in Victoria.” Open Heart Society is a Vancouver Island-based organization, originally formed in Victoria. The all-volunteer Campbell River chapter started up 32 years ago, and two years later began hosting the Walk for Hearts. With Sunday’s contribution, it has now raised more than $295,000, and the number of children and younger participants Sunday indicate that the walk will continue to have a bright future. “That’s a good turnout. I’m very pleased,” registrar Lois Jarvis said. Walkers gathered at Willow Point Hall to

register before receiving brief instructions and departing the building to hike the seawalk north toward Campbell River. There was no set distance for the walk; rather, participants simply walked for about a half-hour, then turned and returned to the hall for refreshments and a prize draw. Other than some of the kids’ prizes, which were purchased by the society, all other prizes were donated, including several one-of-a kind, handcrafted items. The walk was dedicated to the memory of Joyce Campbell, a longtime supporter who died earlier this year.

School program is genius J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
J.R. RaRdon/Campbell RiveR miRRoR
From left, singer Kaydence Harris, bassist Rylee Eve and guitarist Owen Olney polish their take on Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” during Genius Hour at Discovery Passage Elementary School Friday.
Students at Discovery Passage Elementary School get to take charge of some of their own learning in a new program called Genius Hour. Supporters throughout the community have proven pretty bright, too. Student requests to self-direct studies in music, engineering, chemistry, video production and other areas highlighted shortfalls in
available equipment and supplies at the school. So teacher Eben Van Renen placed a request for donations in online forums like Facebook and Craig’s List, and was overwhelmed by the response. Individual donors, along with the Campbell River Canadian Legion and Long & McQuade’s Music in Courtenay, came through with musical instruments, tools and other supplies that have allowed the program for Grade 3, 4

and 5 students to prosper. The music section in particular was a big beneficiary, with two guitars, two bass guitars, an electric keyboard, amps, effects pedals, cables, a tuner and more. Most of the big pieces came from individual donors, along with a pair of large cabinet speakers donated by the Legion. “Long & McQuade filled in the gaps,” said Van Renen. “But mainly it was the community. We even heard from one person in Fort Mac(Murray), who saw the ad and wanted to contribute.” Additional tools and equipment were donated for engineering, biology, chemistry and video production components of the program. Van Renen did not use a template when he opened up the program
for his classroom. “I started with a blank board,” he said, sweeping his arm at the dryerase board in front of the classroom. “As long as it’s legal and doesn’t blow up the school, they can choose what they want to do.” Students learn by adopting their chosen vocation and then researching and creating a project in small groups. Teams include a rock band, engineers, chemists, biologists and a video production team that records it all for its in-house “TV” program, Discovery Hour. Best of all for the tudents, they will not be graded on their work in Genius Hour. “I want to see them lost in their art,” said Van Renen. “The moment I attach grades to this, it switches the focus to me, to my expectations.”

ramatic scenery and fascinating marine life are memorable features of this part of the coast, but it’s also a place rich in history. There are stories attached to every inlet, island and bay. Tales of endurance and humour, battles won and lost, by a cast of remarkable characters. The Museum at Campbell River offers an annual five-day tour for ten people aboard the historic Columbia III to see the Broughton Island archipelago and Kingcome Inlet. The trip, from May 30 to June 4, offers a rare glimpse into life on the coast. Historian/writer Jeanette Taylor serves as the guide, drawing upon her current book
in progress, a historical biography partially set in this region. Taylor, a former museum staff member, has four books in print about the history of north Vancouver Island. “River City, A History of Campbell River & the Discovery Islands” has been in print for over fifteen years. A more recent book, “Tidal Passages, A History of the Discovery Islands,” was on the BC Bestseller’s List for nearly a year. “This is an active trip,” says Taylor. “We take the zodiac out several times a day to explore places like Maud Island in Seymour Narrows, an intact 1890s homestead at Port Neville, an untouched watershed, and aboriginal village sites.” The Columbia III winds through the

tightly packed Broughton Islands and then heads up to Kingcome Inlet, with its mountains and waterfalls. There are old Kwakwaka’wakw village sites scattered throughout the islands, says Taylor. Most have been abandoned for generations, and their glistening, white clam shell beaches attest to thousands of years of occupation. Some have remains of traditional big houses and totems and there are many pictographs (paintings on rock). “We’ll get a taste of present day life too,” says Taylor. “Billy Proctor of Echo Bay has become a legend in his own time and we’ll stop at a reoccupied Kwakwaka’wakw village too, to see their tradi-
tional big house.” The crew of the 70-foot Columbia III, a family-run business based on Sonora Island, is famous for their gourmet fare. They also love to share their passion for birds, plants and sea life. On board for this trip will be Luke Hyatt, who is particularly knowledgeable about birds and marine mammals. Museum staff recommend you book soon as there are only two spots remaining. For more information check the Mothership Adventures website at www.mothershipadventures.com or the Museum at Campbell River site at www.crmuseum.ca. Through their many years of sponsorship and participation of the Rod Brind’Amour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic, they have learned a great deal about cystic fibrosis and the impact it has on the people who have it, their families and friends. Doug Riederer said “I have a deep respect for children and young adults who are battling cystic fibrosis – it is a devastating disease. We really want to support the CF cause and help find a cure or control so children like Maysa Milligan can live a longer and healthier life – we want to make a difference in their lives.” Milligan takes many medications, uses a nebulizer several times a day and under goes physiotherapy at least twice a day to help loosen the secretions in her lungs. She struggles with gaining weight and is on a special diet. Her parents take her to Victoria every few months for check ups with the specialized cystic fibrosis clinic at Victo-

It is a multi-system disease that affects mainly the lungs and the digestive system. In the lungs, where the effects are most devastating, a build-up of thick mucus causes severe respiratory problems. As improved therapies have helped to address the malnutrition issues, ultimately most deaths related to cystic fibrosis are due to lung disease.

Relive the 80s as Honeymoon Suite brings their brand of hits to the Tidemark Theatre tomorrow, May 7. Johnnie Dee and Derry Grehan founded Honeymoon Suite in 1982. It was Toronto’s Q107-FM Homegrown Contest (1983) that put them on the map with “New Girl Now” winning the contest. The response was so overwhelming that Bob Roper at WEA Canada immediately signed the band. Their self-titled debut album hit stores in 1984. The album went platinum with more than 400,000 units to date in Canada alone. The band’s second album “The Big Prize” (1986), featuring a rare appearance by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, went platinum in Canada and saw Honeymoon Suite’s first real entry into the U.S. market.

Time to dust off that bike With only six weeks ‘til Bike to Work Week, it’s time to get your bike – and your team – ready. Work Week 2015 runs May 25 to 31 and Campbell Riverites are encouraged to register as a workplace, school, individual, family or group of friends. “This event is more than biking to work,” says Jen Furst, the city’s recreation programmer. “It’s about choosing another mode of transportation, and you get exercise, save money on fuel and prevent additional greenhouse gases from going into the atmosphere. “Make it fun and challenge another department, organization, company or school to see who can log the most kilometres.” Bike to Work Week features prizes at the various breakfast stations and a barbecue held during the week. RBC takes heart The Campbell River Hospital Foundation is the latest recipient of the RBC Foundation’s charitable considerations. The Foundation has written a cheque for $20,000 to support the purchase of an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Kit at Campbell River Hospital. ACLS is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the management of patients in cardiac arrest, with unstable heart rhythms, or suffering acute heart attacks or strokes. Team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post cardiac arrest are highlighted. Specific skills in airway management and related pharmacology are also featured.

Campbell River’s Ryan Howich, right, parks in front of the Khazakstan crease during Team Canada’s appearance in the Winter Deaflympics in Russia.
Canada had topped the Russians 2-1 in the final group-play game to finish as the unbeaten top seed with a 23-4 goal differential. En route to the final, Team Canada blasted Kazakhstan 14-0, topped the U.S. 4-2, and downed Finland 7-1 before edging Russia and setting up the gold-medal rematch. “Each team was way different,” Howich said. “No teams were at the same level; there was a real variety.” Howich, who came up through the Campbell River Minor Hockey program and competed for the Tyees rep program, equated the skill

level of the teams to a cross between juniors
SEASON BEGINS!
Back home from a week in Russia, competing for Team Canada in the 18th Winter Deaflympics, Campbell River’s Ryan Howich kept returning to one word to describe the customs, behaviour and even food of the host country. “It was weird,” said Howich, 20, who helped the Canadian men’s hockey team claim the silver medal in the games in Khanty-Mansiysk. “It was an unreal experience. Everything’s different.” That include the food — “The food’s not different; they have the same things,” he said. “But they keep it in water and boil everything.” And while Canada has an almost legendary reputation for politeness, to the point that it is a recurring punchline for comedians, it was no laughing matter for Howich and his Team Canada mates to discover it is not universal behaviour. “Nobody holds a door for anybody else,” he said. “If somebody bumps into you, you know how we say, ‘Sorry’? They don’t even look at you; they just keep walking.” On the other hand, the hockey players — particularly those from Canada — were treated like rock stars, he said. “It felt like being in the NHL or something,” Howich said. “People are coming up and asking for autographs, wanting to talk with you. They said if Canada didn’t come they wouldn’t even have Deaflympics hockey.” The Deaflympic Games are sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee and are structured exactly like the Winter Olympic Games, but are open only to the hearing-impaired. The games began in 1924, making them the second-longest running multi-sport event behind only the Olympics themselves. Russia won the goldmedal final 6-3 after
and recreational men’s league. He noted, however, the Russian squad boasted several players with professional experience. Team Canada was made up of players ranging from 16 to 35 years of age. In addition to his silver medal, Howich returned from Russia with other mementos of his experience. Athletes exchanged pins, buttons, patches and other items with those from other countries. And Howich received one gift that crosses all cultural divides. “I got some chocolate from Russia,” he said.

Fishing Corner More anglers are hunting down salmon in the Campbell River area but some are finding a hotspot closer to Powell River. Those that are heading out after halibut are finding fish as well. The Hump has been hot at times for winter springs and while the fish are now scattered, there is an abundance of bait for the fish to feed on. In the past two weeks, the number of boats getting out is increasing. Ed Cargill reports more chatter on the VHF radios. During the summer months boat traffic is heavy in the popular fishing areas in Campbell River and Courtenay. Shelter Point has had good fishing and anglers are getting down deep using Tomic Plugs, Glow Hoochies and Point Wilson Darts. In recent weeks, there has been good fishing at Bates Beach and Kitty

At the request of local anglers and following a review by DFO Stock Assessment Sub area 13-22, Bute Inlet – lying north of a line running from a marker at Alpha Bluff to a marker on the opposite shore – will remain open to the retention of Chinook salmon for the month of May. Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal waters of British Columbia. Maximum length for halibut is 133 cm and daily limit is one with possession limit of two. Annual limit is six per licence. With the warmer weather,
some of the best freshwater fishing started last Monday when trout were surfacing at Mohun Lake in late afternoon. Trolling Wedding Bands and small plugs are working well at the moment. Echo Lake saw lots of anglers last Sunday and at times parking is hard to come by. Wolf, Maple and Spider are key lakes to fish this week. On the fly, many sports shops carry fry imitations and this is a key fly to use from shore if you are trying for catch-and-release trout. Campbell River levels are always consistent and water levels are low on the Quinsam
Don Daniels
and Oyster Rivers. Discovery Pier is now open for the season and the first salmon caught was registered April 16 when Al Smolkin landed a 26-pound spring. The best time to see anglers are evening hours when the locals head out to catch the big one while enjoying the fun of catching bottom fish. Next week I will have a full report on local trout fishing derbies coming up and I get a number of inquiries from readers each week wanting to know where the fish are biting and what to use. I have developed a fly that is being tested by a few local anglers and fishing guides. The pattern is simple to tie but the material is the key factor on catching trout due to the colour and the action it has in the water. All inquires can be emailed to dond@ campbellrivermirror.com.

A young fan enjoys the best seat in the house as the 2015 racing season kicks off at Saratoga Speeway Saturday.
The 2015 Saratoga Speedway season opener was marked by a sellout crowd, fireworks and more than 50 cars in the pits for a double points session Saturday evening. Ten rookie drivers rounded out the field of 32 Hornet cars and 15-year-old Brayden Weiler claimed the A dash in his first appearance on the track. Michael White, 14, took the B dash. The evening was highlighted by new track record was set in Hornet
qualifying, with Daryl Cahill beating his own previous track record with a lap of 17.891 seconds. Four heats were contested in the Hornets class. Cahill snared the A victory, Taylor Pheaton won the B, Diana Ackerman outdueled Ashley White in a bumper-tobumper duel for the C, and 13-year-old Chris Hleck claimed the D. In the B Main, Rowland Westra held off another charge by White to take the checkered flag. Kevin Lawrenuk
just edged Cahill to win the 25-lap A Main. In the Roadrunner class, Dennis Leavitt dominated the early going with wins in the dash and the 10-lap heat race. But Ryan Guest claimed the main event. Justin Beaulieu and Darren Larson won the two trophy dashes in the Bomber class. Beaulieu carried his success into a wire-to-wire victory in the 12-lap heat race, but Gilles Cyr, returning to Saratoga after a two-year absence, claimed the first main event of the season.

The glitz and glamour of Hollywood was on display at the “Old Hollywood” Gala in support of Cameryn’s Cause for Kids on April 25 at the Sportsplex. Classic cars, a red carpet, glamorous gowns, gourmet food and a glittering dance hall set the scene for a spectacular evening. Photos by thea stratton
HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD! AND CAMERYN’S CAUSE FOR KIDS Hollywood-themed gala raises $47,000 to help families deal with the turmoil of medical expenses
T
he “Old Hollywood” Gala in support of Cameryn’s Cause was held on April 25 at the Sportsplex and raised $47,000. Tickets for the event sold out within one hour resulting in 350 guests attending and dining on a gourmet meal provided by Quay West Kitchen and Catering that featured themed cocktails, appetizers and dessert bar. Guests were welcomed by a red carpet with oldfashioned cars parked outside. A replica of the Hollywood sign was set
up on the Sportsplex Hill. Inside everyone enjoyed dancing to the music provided by The P-Nut Gallery and Theo. There was also a silent auction and a live auction. The emotional heart of the annual event was given a voice by Cameryn’s Cause founder Shayleen Harris. Before 2007, Campbell River was a very different place for families with sick or injured children, or for families that were dealing with the death of a child, Harris said.
Without warning, a family’s life is thrown into turmoil. Expenses come out of nowhere. Flights. Ferries. Gas. Hotel rooms. Long-term parking at the hospital. Childcare for the children left at home. Meals. Back at home, the mortgage is still due. The hydro needs to be paid. The bills don’t have sympathy for their plight. And one parent, usually dad, is away from the family trying to pay for it all. The reality? These should be the least of their worries. “When a child dies, the expenses are ones that you never even want to think about, but again – the reality is they are there,” Harris said. “For the last eight
years, for 120 families to date in Campbell River, something was to change. Not the expenses and the reality of dealing with a sick child – that didn’t go away. But the ability to cope better did, in the form of Cameryn’s Cause. Very quickly, families are able to receive funds to keep them going. To take that flight to get there faster, to get a hotel room instead of sleeping in a chair at the hospital. To have both parents there at the child’s side, which is the best medicine a child could have. And for grieving families facing a loss, Cameryn’s Cause provides funds to help pay for the funeral, and allows the families to give their child that
last gift. “So how do we pay for this? This past year Cameryn’s Cause had a variety of successful fundraising events. We had last year’s gala, which raised an amazing $37,000. We had a radiothon hosted by 99.7 Today FM, a golf tournament put on by Sequoia Springs, a comedy night, a Shopping For Cameryn’s Cause event, the Storm vs. Cameryn’s Cause Charity game, a Onesie Party, to name the larger ones. We also had raffles like the Brown’s Bay Hawaii trip. Some of my favourite donations come from children from things like bake sales and birthday parties. We also had a one-day dance-a-thon put on
by the kids at Urban Dance which raised an amazing $6,000 for Cameryn’s Cause. There’s something really wonderful about kids helping other kids. And there are many more donations or smaller contributions that are just as important and make a huge impact for our families. “One of the things that has come out of this experience is something that families have shared with me time and time again – it’s not just about the money. As one father put it, there’s something comforting in knowing that your community is behind you that makes things easier to bear. And that is, I believe, one of the greatest blessings of
Cameryn’s Cause, and the thing that makes all the work worthwhile. “I’d like to end with a quote from Albert Schweitzer, who said, ‘In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flames by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.’ “Cameryn, her life and her legacy, were that spark for me. And it is through all of you, and with your support that we are able to be that spark for our families. Thank you for helping to rekindle their spirits, and for helping us build a support system for many more families in the years to come.”
