Paramedics Memorial unveiled at Legislature C A RO LYN GR ANT
It has now been almost exactly nine years since an accident took the lives of two Kimberley Ambulance Paramedics — Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier — and the two workers they were trying to save — Bob Newcombe and Doug Erickson. On Wednesday, May 6, the Fallen Paramedics Memorial was unveiled on the south lawn
of the Legislature in Victoria. Attending the ceremony were the families of Shawn Currier and Kim Weitzel, whose names will join eight others, forever remembered as giving their lives in the line of duty. Columbia River Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald attended the unveiling along with Kim’s husband George Weitzel, and Shawn’s parents Bob and
Lori Currier. The memorial was funded by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and the Ambulance Paramedics of BC (CUPE 873) to serve as a tangible reminder of the ultimate sacrifice paid by paramedics who dedicate themselves to helping others.

Dycar Pharmaceuticals, the company that is planning to open a commercial medical marijuana facility in Cranbrook, will be answering question and giving an update on its progress on May 25. Dycar will give an update on where they are with the Health Canada application process and how the plans are coming along for the Cranbrook facility.
On Thursday, Carmen Wannop, Dycar Phamaceuticals vice-president of sales and marketing, spoke to the Daily Townsman about the progress and some of the things that they are preparing for with the venture into this city. Wannop said things are progressing smoothly with the application. “We haven’t had any major hiccups yet,” she said.
There are a total of seven steps in the application process from the time Health Canada receives the applications. Dycar is on stage three. “Actually it’s moving a little faster than we expected, based on what other applicants have said, we are pretty impressed that we are already in stage three,” Wannop noted.

Following the experience of Nikita Dalke in last year’s Extreme Huntress competition, another local huntress is aiming for a spot in the reality TV show. Jodi Schmideder, a Cranbrook woman, completed the entry process online and is in the top-20 finalists. From here, she needs to garner votes and support online, while entrants are also judged on the merit of their application. Online votes make up 40 per cent of the consideration, while judges evaluate social media presence, networking and their 500word essays for the other 60 per cent. In her essay she submitted to the Extreme Huntress judges, she wrote that hunting has been in her family since she was a little girl. “I live a lifestyle that depends on hunting: I do not hunt for trophy, nor respect; I hunt because it’s who I am, and it’s in my blood,” Schmideder said. “I enjoy eating fresh organic meat and I come from a long line of hunters and gatherers and I plan to continue my family’s heritage. “I want to prove not only to women, but to anyone that wants to get into the sport, that hunting is not just about the kill, it’s about coming back to a primal feeling and understanding who
JODI SCHMIDEDER you are as a person.” Schmideder insists that being a hunter isn’t just about the sporting aspect of it. “I was raised to appreciate and respect what I have gathered and I believe strongly in proper game management and conservation of our wild lands,” she wrote. “This passion lead me to pursue an education in environmental science, where I spent two years expanding my knowledge on wildlife management and the importance of conservation at the Lethbridge College.” Schmideder stopped
by the Daily Townsman to talk about her essay submitted to the show and the advice she received from Dalke. “Basically, hunting to me when I wrote it—it’s not about the kill, it’s about just getting out with my father, was the most important, because he started taking me out when I was two years old,” Schmideder. “I remember sitting in the car seat and he’d give us 10 cents for every animal we’d see. “It was just more of an experience hanging out with him.”

Fundraiser for Nepal this Sunday Sunday, May 10, 7 p.m. Centennial Hall in Kimberley C AROLYN GR ANT
It’s being called a gesture of solidarity from one mountain community to those mountain communities in Nepal so drastically affected by the quake 12 days ago. After Nepal’s devastating earthquake, more than 7,500 have been confirmed dead, with thousands more expected, tens of thousands have been injured and have lost their homes, and infrastructure throughout the country, from roads to airports, water lines and more has been decimated. They have a long road to recovery. This Sunday, May 10 a fund-raiser has been organized by local people who were in Nepal at the time of the earthquake and those who are intimately familiar with the country. Pat and Baiba Morrow, Robyn Duncan, Jim Campbell, Annie Coulter and Shauna Jimenez are coordinating this fund-raiser and will be present to answer questions after the Morrow’s slide show on Nepal. “Pat and Baiba Morrow have a deep connection to Nepal,” said Jimenez. “They will present “Heart of the Himalaya” a visual representation of the peoNeed help with current events?

Learn more about them at www.patmorrow.com In addition, there will be a discussion afterwards with four locals who were in Nepal at the time of the earthquake. Join Jim Campbell and Annie Coulter, Kara Brissette and Robyn Duncan to hear their first-hand experiences during and after the earthquake. “Sunday is Mother’s Day. Mount Everest is known as Chomolungma in Nepal - Goddess Mother of the World,” Jimenez said. “So, bring your mom, your Grandma, your sister — we will have goodies! Come and celebrate by helping to nurture Nepal back to stand on her feet.” All funds raised will be directed to grassroots organizations ensuring these funds get directly to the people in Langtang, Tsum and Manaslu areas. These areas have received very little if any aid to date, and were tragically destroyed by the quake, Jimenez says. Admission is by donation. Fund-raiser organizers gratefully acknowledge the City of Kimberley for providing the use of Centennial Hall for the event.

The opportunity doesn’t come very often but for EKFH Chair Brian Clifford and Donna Grainger, Executive Director the chance to say thanks and address the attendees of the Zone Conference of Royal

She said that speed could account from their application being especially thorough when it was sent in to Health Canada. “I know some people sent in an application that was 30 pages — ours was thousands and thousands of pages,” she said. “The more thorough your application is, the less hassle you’re going to have.” Carmen and her husband Dylen have been designated growers for over 10 years. The old law was the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) and she agrees with the move to
the new regulations. Carmen was personally involved in the stakeholders meeting with Health Canada in Vancouver back in September, 2011. “So we knew they were changing the law — which they needed to — because there were too many people breaking the law under the old way,” she said. Wannop expects to answer questions on the procedure with Health Canada and how far along they are, as well as the jobs that they will be offering once the facility opens. “As we stated, in the first year of operations there will be 200 full-
time positions. Now because of the way we operate we can hire people with disabilities or people with children at home who only want to work part-time,” she said. “It may take me three part-time people to fill one full-time position. There could be more than 200 people employed with us — it’s just that we have 200 full-time positions available.” She said out of all the people that they’ve met with in Cranbrook, they have only heard from two people against it. “I’m sure somebody is going to come up to me and say how marijuana is bad for soci-

Rails 2 Trails to close a section today Trevor Crawley
Repairs to a washout on NorthStar Rails to Trails will close a portion of the trail to the public on Friday. The closure will happen between Wycliffe Road to the Rails to Trails bridge over the St. Mary’s river from approximately 8am until 4:00pm. Trail users will be able to detour around this section by fol-
lowing the Wycliffe Store Road, which is just a precaution for workers and trail users. According to Chris Zettel, the corporate communications officer for the City of Cranbrook, there is a small section of the trail that needs some work after being washed out from winter melt. Workers will be on hand with light machinery to fix the section, which should only take a day,
Zettel added. Though the trail is being closed for Friday, the work might even only require a few hours. As far as he’s aware, that is the only section of the trail that needs immediate maintenance work. The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience this closure may cause. Your patience is appreciated.

cess, then, hey, I did a good job,” she said. The whole board of directors will be at the meeting. Wannop said their company has strongly rooted community values. “We’re actually a family. For instance our CFO is the father of my soon to be son-in-law,” she said. “Even with our staff, with any business that we’ve owned, it is a family atmosphere. We’re not those big pharmaceutical companies where every employee is just a number, and every patient is just a number. “We got into it for the compassion reasons, and we will continue to be in it for the compassion reasons.” She said almost all the correspondence they get from the public has been supportive. “We’ve had tons and tons of emails and comments posted on the internet about people excited we are coming to town for new jobs, and it’s great to be there,” she said. Dycar announced the plans earlier this year. “We’ve been going through this process with the City of Cranbrook for well over a year. We didn’t put the public notice out until February. That was our choice because we
didn’t want everyone to go ‘there was this announcement made, why aren’t they here yet?’ We knew how long the process was going to take, so we didn’t want everyone getting excited and then saying, ‘this is never going to happen.’”
“It’s not just slap up four walls, put some lights in and put some plants in — that’s not what it entails. We are scrutinized by the government. We are a secured facility. Some of the rules we have to follow are not like a normal employer.” Carmen Wannop Dycar Pharmaceuticals
She said it is going to happen, and it is not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. “We literally are at the timeframe of the government right now,” she said. “But we’re hoping that since ours was so thorough it breezes right through with absolutely no problem” Wannop said their application is one of
about a thousand that have gone into Health Canada. Many of those have been denied and many withdrawn once they realize what it takes to set up a facility. “It’s not just slap up four walls, put some lights in and put some plants in — that’s not what it entails,” she said. “We are scrutinized quite a bit by the government. We are a secured facility. Some of the rules we have to follow are not like a normal employer.” For instance the company has to account for every part of the plant that it produces — even the parts that are destroyed. She also noted that one concern people sometimes have with this type of facility coming into a community is that organized crime will get involved. “There is no possible way organized crime can get involved in one of these,” she said. “We have to prove where our money comes from to build the facility. If it’s tainted in any way Health Canada is going to throw your application out.” She said that was one of the things that stakeholders pushed for when the new regulations were being put together.

Paramedics The 1950s: The library moves forward memorial O unveiled Continued from page 1
The Fallen Paramedics Memorial joins the law enforcement and fire services memorials, which together honour emergency responders and remind the public of the danger these men and women face as they work to help save lives. “I hope this memorial provides some comfort to the families of the 10 paramedics who died in the line of duty in BC. We honour these heroic men and women, and their selfless contributions are never forgotten,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. Macdonald later spoke in the Legislature. “Paramedics do a very difficult job. They rush to scenes of trauma to give comfort and ease pain. And they are often asked to go into dangerous situations. “Kim and Shawn thought they would be attending a drowning. They believed they were going to a pond, not a shed. They had no way of knowing that the conditions in that shed would cause their deaths.

ne of the hard, fast, and unchangeable laws of librarianship is that — from the day they open their doors — libraries are growing organisms. As the Cranbrook Public Library entered it third decade of operation, this law (first observed by an Indian mathematician in 1931), was clearly in full effect. Brought to life in 1925, by 1950 the library was beginning to burst at the seams. Still located in the Cranbrook Post Office building (where the CIBC is today), it was becoming clear that this location was no longer suitable for the growing population of Cranbrook. Not only had tables been removed or reduced (one was actually sawed in half), but shelves had been built under, over and around windows, radiators, and even other shelves. By 1952 footstools were needed to access a significant portion of the Library’s holdings. Also by this year there were 712 members, borrowing more than 11,000 books annually. Serious discussions about finding a more suitable location began that year, with the Cranbrook Rotary Club characteristically offering assistance at all levels. While they began to draw plans and consult builders in addition to their fundraising activi-
ties, the library continued to operate as usual. George T. Moir, who would later have a park named after him, had published the book ‘Sinners and Saints’ — a compelling look at the antagonism between two major railway companies fighting over the Crows Nest Pass. Demand for this title was high, so not only were two copies purchased, but the idea for obtaining more books featuring local history was planted. The early 1950s also saw the introduction of the Dewey Decimal Classification, which greatly organized the collection for easier access; helping readers find materials much quicker and make more effective use of library resources (albeit a nightmare to all elementary school students, forced to learn it under duress). The Library also maintained a small but growing selection of children’s books, which was no easy thing. Unlike today, juvenile books had to be purchased from the H.R. Hunting Company in Springfield, Massachusetts (Luckily, a kind-hearted customs broker always waived the duties the library owed on book purchases). To complicate matters further, there was simply no room for chil-

Mike Selby dren’s books, so the entire collection was kept at Central School, a difficult situation at best. By the mid-1950s, overdue books were getting out of hand, so various strategies were implemented to deal with these book-borrowing scofflaws. Postcards were mailed out to patrons to remind them to return their books within seven days or be charged the book’s full price (this was far more gentle than the 1960s, when the library was able to have a phone installed. Then the holder of an overdue book would receive a stern conference-call from an extremely unpleased Library Board, who offered to come to the person’s house to collect the overdue items. Yikes!) 1957 saw the Library extend its hours of operation: it was now open every afternoon from 3

to 5 pm, and 2:30 to 9:30 pm Tuesdays and Saturdays. There was a strict three-book limit, which was further limited by insisting one of the books be nonfiction. If one wished to just check out fiction, only two books were permitted. Kids could were limited to only one book—and only if they were accompanied by an adult. A horrifying incident took place on January 15, 1958, causing an emergency meeting of the Library Board. Earlier that day, a member of the library staff caught a grade 6 student “reading a book from the
adult section!” Fortunately, the Board took swift action, banning not only this miscreant, but all students in grade 6 or under from attempting to read above their station. The Cranbrook Public Library greeted the 1960s in their new location at the Provincial Government Building (where the courthouse is today). But how long before that pesky law of librarianship would catch up it? Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

The Chinese quarter-century T he picture of the two Asian giants that most people carry around in their heads shows China racing ahead economically while India bumbles along, falling ever further behind. People even talk about the 21st century as “China’s Century”, just as they called the 20th century the American Century. But it may turn out to be only China’s Quarter-Century. The headline economic news this year is that India’s economy is growing faster than China’s. Not much faster yet, according to the official figures – a 7.5 percent annual rate for India vs. 7.4 percent for China – but there is good reason to suspect that the real Chinese growth rate is considerably lower than that. Anybody who goes to both countries can see that India has a huge amount of catching up to do. The contrast in infrastructure is especially striking: China has 100,000 km of expressways (freeways, motorways); India has only 1,000 km. But the differences in income and productivity are also very big: Gross Domestic Product per capita in China is between three and five times higher than in India, depending on how you calculate it. But that is a snapshot of now. It was very different thirty-five years ago, when per capita income in India was still higher than it was in China. It was then-leader Deng Xiaoping’s decision in 1978 to open up the Chinese economy that unleashed the spectacular economic growth rates of the recent past, and an economy growing at ten percent a year doubles in size every
seven years. That means (allowing for a little slippage) that the Chinese economy has grown more than twentyfold since 1978. That’s why it is so far ahead now. India’s growth rate was a quite respectable three or four percent for most of that period, but that gave the Indian economy a doubling time of around twenty years, so it has only grown around threefold during the whole period. India is not chronically poorer than China. It just missed that particular bus. The next bus has now arrived: India actually catch up with China Gwynne could if its economic growth rate is now really surging ahead Dyer of China’s. There is good reason to believe that it is, because China’s declared growth rate for this year is pure fiction. China avoided the global recession after the 2008 crash by opening the credit taps to full and embarking on the largest spending spree on infrastructure (roads, housing, railways and airports) that the world has ever seen. But capitalist economies cannot avoid recessions forever. The country is now full of empty apartment buildings, the private debt load has doubled in five years — and the recession is coming. More than that, China’s period of highspeed growth was probably always going to be limited. Japan enjoyed a quarter-century of ten percent annual growth in 1955-80 and became, for a while, the world’s second-biggest economy. But once its per capita income reached devel-
oped-world levels, the growth rate dropped down to developed-world levels too: between two and four percent. (Now it’s almost nothing.) China has also had its quarter-century of ten percent growth, and it is probably over. The official figure for economic growth last year was still over seven percent, but the less easily manipulated numbers for rail freight, electricity production and bank lending suggest that the real growth rate was only around three percent. That is to say, less than half of India’s. The other thing that will hold China back in future is a steady fall in the population of working age. India’s birth rate is still 2.7 children per woman (though it’s falling fast). China’s is at most 1.7, and the one-child policy means that it may even be lower than that. So fewer and fewer young Chinese are entering the workforce, whereas there will be no shortage of young Indians. India’s total population will overtake China’s in less than five years (they are both around 1.3 billion), and after that the gap will steadily widen. While China’s population shrinks and its economic growth slows, India is only now entering the golden quarter-century of high-speed economic growth. In 25 years’ time, India may be back in the position it occupied for most of the past two thousand years: the biggest economy in Asia. Then & Now
Jim Cameron Mr. Caven stopped the train to investigate and found that the elk’s head had been cut off close to the shoulders, leaving it in perfect shape for subsequent mounting. Fred Ryckman failed in the capture of a big game trophy in October, 1915, when he organized party of hunters to bring down a bear that Mr. Ryckman claimed was relentlessly raiding his pigsty and making off with the bacon. The men stationed themselves nearby in the dark of night and, hearing the squealing of the pigs, advanced forward to let loose a terrific volley. Upon close inspection they discovered the bullet-ridden body of Mr. Ryckman’s bulldog. Mission accomplished, more or less. Tragically, it is sometimes the hunter who becomes the target. Not as often as might be thought but, needless to say, there are more than a few graves in the Old General cemetery occupied by those who, with a loaded gun in their hands, made one mistake. Perhaps Charles Campbell had it right when he opened his shooting gallery on Baker Street in 1903; after all, he was the local undertaker. Those on record as having died by a single misplaced bullet include Joseph Tacier, a CPR worker, who was among the first in the city to suffer death by

aple-roasted rack of venison, grilled rainbow trout, panseared duck breast with blueberry sauce and a fine bottle of pinot noir; the hunter’s choice cuisine. But first you have to kill it, although, as clever hunters know, the wine is generally killed differently than the meat. Sometimes, in fact, you have to catch your prey after you kill it, as E.J. Peltier and Charles Armstrong discovered in September, 1902, when they travelled in the company of a borrowed bird dog to a lake on the St. Mary Prairie to do a little duck hunting. They shot well, the ducks dropped in the lake and the dog refused to budge. Not to be snookered by a canine, Mr. Peltier shrugged off his clothes, climbed into the saddle of his trusty steed and headed for the middle of the lake. Hanging on by the mane he and the horse swam from duck to duck and gathered them all; a perfect poster boy for Super Natural British Columbia. Much to his chagrin Lester Clapp, in an oft-repeated tale, met with misfortune while hunting ducks near Twin Lakes. Taking a break he sat down to rest against a tree for a smoke when he spotted a lone mallard coming towards him in full flight. He raised his shotgun and fired at a distance of some 30 yards. His aim was true but the duck did not falter. It flew directly into Mr. Clapp’s head, crushing both his cigar (Mr. Clapp’s, not the duck’s) and his pride, before falling dead to the ground (the duck, not Mr. Clapp). Thomas Caven, a conductor for the CPR, did away with the whole rifle thing completely in 1916, when his train, No. 514, heading east, struck and killed an elk. On the return journey

He was working in the Cranbrook rail yard when he slid his rifle backwards onto a handcar, caught the trigger in some tools, shot himself in the stomach and died soon after. In 1913, Edgar Rawles brought down a grouse with a .22 caliber pistol. When the bird showed continued signs of life he picked it up with one hand and shot himself in the stomach with the other. He walked two miles to his camp and died the next day. In April, 1905, W.C. Cook, the CPR station agent at Fort Steele Junction, went out with his rifle and didn’t return. An ensuing search revealed his rifle and clothes on the shore of a small lake. His body was discovered in the water not far from the

dead duck he was apparently trying to swim to retrieve when he was overcome by cramps. Edward Trowse shot himself in the chest with a 30-30 rifle in 1913, when he struck the hammer of the weapon on a rock upon which he was seated while hunting up Gold Creek. He died instantly and, ironically, was carried down the mountain in a deer hide. Robby Boyter somehow shot himself through the lung with his father’s shotgun in April, 1919, while leading a team of horses. He managed to walk home but died the next day. In a bizarre accident, Alban Michel shot his friend, 11-year-old Gabriel Ignacz, on Christmas Eve, at St. Eugene Mission. The two boys were playfully arguing over possession of a gun when it went off, blowing away Gabriel’s hand and sending a piece of bone into his
stomach which killed him almost immediately. On the other hand, there is the tale, first heard in 1912, of local game warden Jim Bates encountering a hunter with his gun in the mountains during the closed season. “Good country for hunting,” said the warden. “It certainly is,” replied the hunter, adding, “I killed one of the finest bucks yesterday I ever saw. He must have weighed over two hundred pounds.” “I see,” said the warden, “and do you know who you are talking to?” “No, I’m afraid I don’t,” answered the hunter. “Well, sir,” said Bates, “I am the chief game warden of this district.” “And do you know who you are talking to,” asked the hunter? “No, I do not,” said Bates. “Well, sir,” said the hunter, “you are talking to the biggest liar in British Columbia.”

Tabbing Taphorn
Ice select 10 at Bantam Draft; Yorkton’s Taphorn tops Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Kootenay Ice president and general manager Jeff Chynoweth called it one of the most important days on the calendar. Guided by Garnet Kazuik, director of scouting, the Ice selected 10 players at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft Thursday morning. With no first-round pick in the chamber, the Ice chose Yorkton, Sask., product Keenan Taphorn in the second round with the 34th overall selection. “He competes hard, he’s got good hockey sense, he’s a big body,” Kazuik said over the phone Thursday afternoon. “He’s a typical Kootenay Ice player. “He comes from a winning tradition.” Taphorn, a right-winger, spent his last two seasons with the Yorkton Terriers Bantam AA squad, accruing 53 goals and 131 points in 55 games. Kazuik compared the 6-foot, 157-pound Taphorn to former Ice forward Drew Czerwonka, who went on to suit up in 227 WHL games and produce 110 points after
being selected 20th overall at the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. Taphorn has a twin brother, Kaedan. He was selected by the Vancouver Giants in the third round (47th overall) of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.
Outside of Kootenay’s top pick in Taphorn, the Ice selected four defencemen and five other forwards Thursday afternoon. “Overall, we feel pretty good going away and every team feels like that,” Kazuik said. “You feel fine. We had to work a little bit harder. Not having that first [round pick] and fifth [round pick], that makes a difference in your draft. “From where we were and what picks we had and what numbers we started at, I think, overall, we’re happy with where we’re at. Time is
going to tell. This whole draft class is going to be two to three years away before we truly, truly know what it’s all about.” In the third round, Kazuik tabbed 6-foot, 170-pound defenceman Loeden Schaufler (56th overall). The fourth round brought another Saskatchewan forward to Cranbrook, with Eli Lieffers being selected 78th overall. “Huge honour to be drafted to the Kootenay Ice! Big thanks to all my coaches, teammates and my parents,” Lieffers tweeted. The Ice were without their first- and fifthround selections, having dealt them to the Kamloops Blazers in the deal that brought French scoring sensation Tim Bozon to Cranbrook in October 2013. With the 122nd-overall pick in the sixth round, Kazuik drew from NHL bloodlines in selecting left wing Benjamin Sanderson -- the son of longtime Hartford Whalers forward Geoff Sanderson. The Ice had two selections at their disposal in the sixth round, having acquired the 123rd-overall pick from

Kazuik used that to draft 5-foot-10 defenceman Bobby Russell. “Very excited to be selected by the @ WHLKootenayICE in the whl bantam draft #proud,” Russell tweeted. Centre Michael King became an Ice prospect after being selected 144th overall in the seventh round, and he was joined shortly after by

The Ice wrapped up the final three rounds of the draft by selecting centre Michael Araki-Young (188th overall, ninth round), defenceman Lucas Gaudet (210th overall, 10th round) and forward Austin Wong (232nd overall, 11th round). Wong is the younger
brother of current Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Tyler Wong. “What’s important for these players moving forward is what they do moving forward,” Kazuik said. “They’re all going to be treated equally. They’re going to have equal opportunity to come and prove themselves. “There’s a good mix of players here that I think are pure Western Hockey League players.” In all, the Ice selected three players from B.C.,

Chiefs select defenceman Ty Smith first overall at WHL Draft Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
There wasn’t much question coming into the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft -- Ty Smith was going to be the first-overall pick. As the clock ticked past 8:30 a.m. (Mountain), the Spokane Chiefs made it official, selecting the Lloydmin-
ster-born defenceman with the top pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. “Ty is a dynamic player that makes an impact every shift, said Chris Moulton, Chiefs director of player personnel, in a team media release. “He is a leader and a competitor. “Ty’s vision is as good as I have ever seen
and he makes those around him better.” Smith, a 5-foot-10, 161-pound blue-liner, spent the 2014-15 campaign with the Delta Hockey Academy Bantam Prep team, posting nine goals and 28 points in 16 games. The Chiefs landed the first-overall pick and the opportunity to select the left-shooting Smith
courtesy the Saskatoon Blades in January 2013 after swapping forward Collin Valcourt. “Ty Smith is a special
hockey player,” said Garnet Kazuik, Kootenay Ice director of scouting. “He controls the pace of the game.” Kazuik compared Smith to former Portland Winterhawks defenceman Derrick Pouliot, who went on to be a first-round selection of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.
Though Smith won’t suit up for the Ice, fans in Cranbrook may very well get plenty of opportunity to see the 2015 first-overall selection once he joins Kootenay’s nearest southern rival. Smith is eligible to join the Chiefs for the 2016-17 WHL season. He turns 16 on March 23, 2016.
Smith was the first of two selections in the opening-round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft for Spokane. The Chiefs also claimed centre Koby Morriseau, of Grandview, Man., with the ninth-overall pick Thursday morning. The 2015 WHL Bantam Draft was hosted at the Deerfoot Inn in Calgary.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Follow through on what needs to happen in order to make time to be with a loved one. Follow your sixth sense with a child. The more detached you are, the more caring you can be. Understand where he or she is coming from. Tonight: In the whirl of the moment. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll feel best relating to others on a one-on-one level. Tension could build to a nearly unprecedented level. You might feel as if you’ll gain a better sense of direction by interacting in this way. Know that there is no stopping you right now. Tonight: A must appearance.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Defer to those around you. You might want to share a longterm goal or desire with a loved one. A friend could be unusually insistent on having his or her way. You could be somewhat tired and reactive if you are not careful. Tonight: Roll into the weekend. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Whereas others seem to jump right into weekend mode, you’ll be left holding the bag. You might have a lot of small details to clear up. Get everything done as quickly as possible. No one loves the weekend quite as much as you do! Tonight: Do what you must, then relax. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You could be at a point where you want to let go and enjoy your contemporaries by participating in a project with them. Be more forthright with your thoughts, and be ready for the same in return. Tonight: Head home early. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Be as direct as possible with a loved one. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are poised and well-informed. These characteristics

Tonight: All smiles. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You have the ability and the knowledge to take the lead, but the smart move is to let others assume that role. They need to understand how much work will be involved; otherwise, all the responsibilities will fall on you to handle. Tonight: Get some extra zzz’s. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could be at a point where you want to try a different approach. You might not be seeing the results you want. Be willing to reach out to a friend for feedback. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am 17 years old. I have a job that requires I work only a few times a month, and the staff can trade shifts if they choose. I have been at this job for two years, and I enjoy it. During my first year here, I was taken advantage of quite a lot. People would constantly ask me to change shifts, but I would later find out they had nothing particular going on to require it. I learned how to say no, because I don’t really trust some of them. I agree to change shifts with people who ask me in advance or tell me what’s going on, but have become wary of those who ask at the last minute. The problem is my mother. She always makes me feel as though I’m not behaving properly. When I’m asked to switch shifts for no good reason, she says, “Why didn’t you say yes? You’re supposed to say yes.” I then get a lecture on how I need to be more responsible and more understanding when people have other things to do with their time. I know that most people’s intentions are good, but I don’t want to be taken advantage of. Why doesn’t my mother think I’m good enough? I don’t drink, I go to church, I obey my parents, and I’m in the National Honor Society. People say my mother is lucky to have a daughter like me, but I don’t feel that from her. I don’t mean to sound conceited, but I’m starting to get tired of always being good. I’m scared I may just stop trying. -Not Good Enough Dear Not Good: Everyone needs to feel that their efforts are appreciated, and kids especially need to know that their parents believe them to be good people. We think your mother knows this, but she worries. She doesn’t want you to alienate the people you work with, but you are right to set boundaries for yourself (as long as you are polite about it). It engenders respect. But please don’t use your mother’s fretting as an excuse to go off the rails. Talk to her. Reassure her that you are not expected to say “yes” to every request. Let her know that she has done a great job raising you and now must allow you to make your own decisions and live with the consequences, so you can learn to be the responsible adult she expects. Enlist her support and cooperation. Ask for her advice. It will make her happy to know you still value it. Dear Annie: This is in response to the “horror stories” that women tell pregnant mothers-to-be. As an obstetrician (retired), with over 5,000 babies delivered, here is what I call Dr. Elfmont’s Rule of Pregnancy: Never listen to what people (your mother, grandmother, aunts, etc.) tell you about their pregnancies -- you’re too big or too small for your due date; you’re carrying high (or low) and that means it’s a boy (or a girl); you’ve gained too much or too little weight; they were in terrible labor for 197 hours, etc. I told my patients that nobody in the history of human civilization had ever given birth to the particular baby they were carrying, that the odds were overwhelming for a normal labor and delivery, and if there were any problems, I’d be there to take care of them. -- Dr. John Elfmont in Redondo Beach, Calif. Dear Dr. Elfmont: Well said. Thank you for the reassuring words. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Obituaries Mary Louise Apps-Stober
Mary Louise “Mary Lou Apps-Stober (nee Beedle) left her earthly body and pain behind early the morning of May 2, 2015. Ever the caregiver, she reassured her devoted husband that all would be okay even as she took her last breaths. She had accepted the call home to meet Jesus and looked forward to seeing those who had gone before her. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends during her last days. She is now pain free and smiling down with pride on all the children she helped raise and the projects that others will carry on for her.

Mary Lou housed a beautiful, warm, nurturing soul that touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with during her time on Earth. As a sister she helped her father care for her younger siblings during her mother’s final illness. As a wife she has always been supportive and caring. As Jack will attest, Mary Lou was always there for him. As a mother Mary Lou raised her three daughters in a whirlwind of activity and charitable work. She fostered children giving them the same loving upbringing she gave her own. She was the neighborhood mother and every child who entered her life called her ‘mom’. As a caregiver Mary Lou looked out for the poor and the vulnerable. Her children had many ‘grandparents’ as she brought the elderly she cared for into the family. Along the way Mary Lou nurtured her own entrepreneurial spirit with a second hand store. This satisfied another passion Mary Lou had to recycle and reuse. Mary Lou enjoyed traveling and was able to combine it with her other passions when she and Jack began traveling to Mexico. They started a daycare/orphanage to help care for and feed underprivileged children. Their Christmas Outreach project touched the lives of many others. Mary Lou leaves behind her husband Jack Stober, daughters Walleah Moody, Wanesa Anderson, Wanda Edgar (Gary), stepdaughters Joanne Stober, Irene Stober, grandchildren Shyanne, Ryan, Krystal, Jason, Marcus, Marlon, Richard, Melynda, Clint, Nicole, Chad, and nine great grandchildren.
A memorial mass for Doug will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Christ The Servant Church in Cranbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the: Alzheimer Society of BC, #300, 828 – West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1E2.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Mary Lou on Monday, May 18th at Rotary Park in Cranbrook, BC at 4:00 pm with a potluck to follow. In case of inclement weather the celebration will be moved to 131 - 7th Avenue South. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Connect Church Mission Fund.

With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

I recently read a wonderful little story online. Abe was a fiercely independent, 85–year–old man. After a mild stroke, however, his son insisted he move in with him. Abe missed going to the park near his old apartment. One Saturday he set out to find it. He became disorient-

Finding God in the Park saw them hug and approached her son in a worried voice. “Who was that old man?” “I think he’s God,” Timmy said. “Did he say that?” she demanded. “No, but when he

touched me and told me I’m going to be okay, I felt really better. Only God can do that.” When Abe got home, his son asked in a scolding voice, “Where were you?” “I was in the park with God.” “Really? What makes you think you were with God?” “Because He sent me a boy who needed me, and when the boy hugged me, I felt God telling me I wasn’t useless anymore.” Whenever I hear a story like this, I’m reminded that God comes to us in many disguises. In 1972, Presbyterian professor Robert McAfee Brown wrote a wonderful book called “The Pseudonyms of God”. His point was that God speaks to us in many different ways — through human culture and natural events, through interior mystical experiences, and through very public experiences. In that book, he wrote, “I need more than the resources of Bible, theological tradition, and my own commitments if I am to understand my faith and the world in which it is set; I also need the ethical insights of my secular colleagues, the political and psychological analyses of my friends and foes, and the prophetic jab of nonchurchmen whose degree of commitment so often puts my own to shame.” We can catch a glimpse of divine reality in many different ways, including the everyday and ordinary moments of each day. Part of our task, then, is to listen, to see deeper into the heart of reality, so that we might see and hear God’s presence in all these ways. Like Abe and Timmy, we may even learn to find God in the park. I know people like them who are close to God when they’re riding a bike, or climbing mountains, or listening to a piece of music, or finding ourselves lost in a work of art. Celtic spirituality calls such experiences “thin places”. It’s a wonderful concept. It leads us to know the holiness of God that rests all around us. It helps us see God’s holiness in other people, and especially those who are different from us. So what do you say? Want to go the park?
