need to bring this to school kids, we want every kid to know how it works.’” Not knowing how the city’s basic utilities function is something Falconer sees as a knowledge gap in the population—not just in school kids. “It’s so important but no one really teaches it. Tour isn’t just about water From / A1

Falconer believes that the lessons about water conservation and respecting the system by which water comes to and leaves from their homes is better taught by the people on the ground rather than just by teachers. “The city staff, they take a lot of flak, but they are passionate about making things work. That’s their life’s work—making sure drinking water is clean for people in Port Alberni and making sure waste doesn’t back up into homes.” For his part, Mousley sees the school tours as a key step in making sure kids understand how limited the city’s water supply really is. “It gives them an awareness of how small the watershed is and how valuable that resource is that we take for granted.” It’s certainly given Alisa Clydesdale, 14, something to think about.

City of Port Alberni utilities technician Roberto Polles explains the workings of the city’s sewage lagoon to an E.J. Dunn Middle School Grade 8 class.

“Looking at all the freshwater and how nice the freshwater is but then coming [to the sewage lagoon] and realizing how much pollution is going into the ocean. There should be better ways of doing it than putting it into the ocean.”

Exposing students to the behind-thescenes activities of both the city and an aquatic stewardship organization like WCA opens up the eyes of students like Clydesdale to careers they may have never known existed. “Our society is

HEALTHY LIVING

www.albernivalleynews.com A3

Health tip: Use milk

e v i t c A

instead of water when making soup, smoothies and oatmeal if you need to increase your calcium intake.

Eat healthy in order to age well Healthy Living

Second of two parts “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”— Hippocrates

I

s there a way to age more gracefully? Natural aging often brings more challenges to healthy eating. For example, as people age, their ability to chew and swallow a wide range of foods may be compromised due to oral and gastrointestinal problems. This results in more difficulty with maintaining adequate nutrition. Because food and nutrition provide some fundamental keys to health and wellness, appropriate nutrient intake can influence the aging process. It can become a vicious cycle. Living with multiple conditions and/or chronic diseases can affect food variety and quality. This will ultimately affect health, quality and length of life. It is possible to maintain health with eating well in a way that suits particular requirements, symptoms of conditions and possible side effects of specific therapies. Dentition and swallowing

If tooth loss, dental pain, issues with chewing and swallowing problems are affecting what foods are chosen for meals, this can alter the nutritional landscape for maintaining health.

Lack of good dentition may lead to decreased appetite and weight changes. The texture of foods can be changed to improve dietary tolerance. Softer, moister food items can generally offer suitable alternatives when chomping down on a raw carrot or T-bone steak is not possible. Cooking foods in liquids such as broth, water or juice until they are soft and tender can improve texture that is easier to swallow. Limit foods that require a great deal of effort to chew, such as tough meats or poultry, deep fried foods with batter or breading, certain raw fruits and vegetables, bagels and English muffins. Frozen vegetables and fruits can be easily mashed, added to meals and are more tender for chewing and swallowing. Stomach and bowels

Having acid reflux or heartburn and taking medications to help can impede the body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients over time. Therefore, it’s important to be aware that long-term therapy for stomach problems may impact nutritional status. Plus, many seniors do not get enough vitamin B12 through their diet. Including fortified cereal, lean meat, fish and seafood will help. A supplement may be required in some cases. Talk to your health care professional for guidance. Bowel health can influence appetite and intake. A fibrerich diet is generally

Fresh fruits and vegetables help with bowel regularity when you’re older.

healthful for the majority of people. Fibre has many beneficial effects on the body by lowering risk for heart disease, preventing Type 2 diabetes, and helping to manage weight. Whole-grain foods, vegetables, fruits, beans and peas all offer good sources of fibre to help keep bowels regular. Adequate fluid intake is also key. Choose liquids that are non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic to help with hydration and bowel regularity. For some people, loose, frequent bowel movements are a result of bowel conditions. In that case, fibre and other food factors may need adjustments to improve nutrient absorption. Before buying a natural health aide, seek out professional advice

for the specific bowel problem. Bone health

Bone health is a key factor to help the skeleton stay strong over the long-term. Older adults have higher requirements for calcium and vitamin D to maintain bone health. Three servings of vitamin-D fortified foods, including low fat milk (or fortified non-dairy beverage) and yogurt, plus other calciumrich foods, including dark green leafy vegetables, canned fish (with bones) and fortified cereals will help keep bones stronger longer. If you take a calcium supplement or multivitamin, choose one that contains vitamin D. For overall health, people of all ages need protein for strong, healthy bodies. Some older adults do not

get the protein they need to maintain muscle mass, fight infection and recover from an accident or surgery. Some ideas to easily improve protein intake include, adding canned beans/ legumes to salads, soups, rice dishes and casseroles. Enhance meals with cheese for extra protein and calcium. Keep tinned fish in cupboards for quick additions to casseroles, salads and sandwiches. Peanut and other nut butters are an easy way to boost nutrition for snacks. Use milk instead of water when making soup, smoothies and oatmeal. Add dry milk powder for an inexpensive protein supplements to fluid milk, cream soups and mashed potatoes. In addition, access to nutritious foods and means to prepare meals can also impact

daily food choices. Seniors on limited incomes may have trouble buying enough nutrient-rich foods to meet all their nutritional needs. If this is a problem for you or someone you love, explore the options for senior meal services or other food programs in the community. Extreme dieting or drastic weight loss is not recommended later in life. Many diets that promote restricting entire food groups can easily lead to serious nutrient gaps and the slippery slope to malnutrition. Rapid weight loss often leads to lean muscle decline, acceleration of bone loss, and may aggravate a chronic disease and condition, such as cancer development, bowel problems and/ or mental health changes. Aim for a stable

weight (within 10 pounds of your regular weight) as you get older. If you want to lose a few pounds, talk to your health provider or a registered dietitian about the best plan for you. The right balance of foods and activities could help you lose a little fat, while maintaining strong muscles and bones. There are multiple ways to continue to maintain health by eating well, despite the variety of dietary barriers and chronic conditions. In addition, keeping active daily will enhance the appetite for healthy wholesome food. The first part of this article originally ran in the April 7 Alberni Valley News-Advertiser. Missing dogs of the Community Events Okanagan: a true tale ◆ WALK WITH YOUR DOC at Bob Dailey Stadium. Registration 5–5:30 p.m., walk anytime between 5:30–7 p.m. Live music, displays, free draws.

A Brighter Note

T

wo weeks ago I wrote a column about the increased dognapping cases in the Okanagan. Since then two puppies were stolen and later returned to their owners, and four additional dogs vanished without a trace. I followed up that column with an online report aimed at the police and the media in hopes that they would inform the public about this under reported subject. The listing I compiled includes 39 dogs that have gone missing in the last nine months that were abducted and retrieved or have not been found. I’ve talked to most of the owners of these pets. At least 15 of them were stolen, the rest remain a mystery. To some, this isn’t a big deal. As the law states, dogs are merely property, and their theft isn’t considered any worse than that of a bicycle. To others, like me, this is devastating, since our pets are beloved members of

our family and their lives and ours can be deeply impacted in a negative way when they suddenly disappear. I know this to be true because our world has been turned inside out ever since our adored fiveyear-old cockapoo, Charlie, went missing on March 23 from Glenrosa, West Kelowna, where we live. Since then I’ve been on a mission to find him, and that mission has extended to the other missing dogs of the Okanagan as well. After looking through the pictures of all the pups I was

able to find still being advertised as missing, a reporter friend asked: “Are these numbers out of the ordinary?” Good question. Having never known anyone to lose their pet for more than a day or two, and having no concept as to what would be the norm for the number of missing dogs in an area of our size, I had to ask that as well. What I’ve come to discover is that it’s not standard at all. “Typically when a canine goes missing it’s found,” a Kelowna dog control officer explained.

Dognapping a surreal reality in Kelowna “If no body or evidence of an attack is ever discovered, and the majority of the disappearing pets are sell-able purebred types or fighter breeds, it’s not hard to figure out they’re probably being stolen.” Gina Knutsen, who manages the popular Facebook page Okanagan Lost

and Found Pets, agrees. “Normally I’m posting pictures of lost cats,” she said. “But there’s been a significant spike in missing dogs recently. Hopefully once the public realizes there’s a problem, someone will remember seeing something and report it so we can figure out what’s going on and stop it.” Many people,

including the mayor of West Kelowna just a few days ago, have wondered why anyone would want to steal a dog. Once again, this was a question I initially had to ask as well. I’ve learned a lot about the black market for stolen dogs in the last six weeks and its ugliness is shocking. Not only are these poached pets often

sold to unsuspecting people who’ve been told a bogus story about the pooch being abandoned, abused or something of that nature, they’re also stolen for breeding, ransom and more grotesque motives such as dog fighting, lab research, revenge and the unthinkable. There are other reasons as well, such as unconscionable

neighbours or pranksters who dump animals far from home leaving them to fend for themselves. Unfortunately the criminals responsible for any of these abhorrent acts are rarely caught, and if they are, the penalty is never harsh enough. Of course, theft isn’t the only thing we have to worry about when

it comes to the safety of our pets. We also have to be mindful of traffic and wildlife, and since it’s that time of year when hungry coyotes and cougars are looking for their next meal, it’s a good idea to take extra precautions. If possible, provide your dogs with a fenced backyard that locks, and don’t leave them unattended if wildlife is a concern; don’t leave them alone in front of a store or in an unlocked house; try not to leave them in your car; and get your pets registered, fixed, tattooed and microchipped.
