Wildrose’s Nixon elected in RimbeyRocky Mountain House-Sundre BY JASMINE O'HALLORAN-HAN
After weeks of campaigning, then waiting for the votes to slide in, Wildrose Party representative Jason Nixon won the election for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding Tuesday night. Nixon received 6,670 votes. After winning the election, Nixon said he felt excited and humbled by people putting their trust in him in the constituency. “I'm going to work my butt off in the next couple of years to make sure I earn their trust,” Nixon said. “I'm feeling pretty happy for the Wildrose Party.” He reflected on the previous few months where some people considered the Wildrose Party to be almost dead. This is when he said he was proud of his colleagues because they were able to hold it all together and find a new leader. “We will be Official Opposition,” Nixon said. “Now the only difference is that we will be holding an NDP government to account.” Nixon said the biggest challenge of his campaign was trying to spread his message to as many people as possible in 20 days. Nixon said he listened to people and took their concerns seriously about government accountability, which helped in his campaign's success. He said the Wildrose
Party has been good for being in Official Opposition in the last few years and said many people wanted to see Wildrose MLAs standing up to keep the government accountable. As the new MLA, Nixon will take the next few months to plan meetings with stakeholder groups across the riding. He said he is going to start developing a plan of focus for the next couple of years. Some of the issues Nixon plans to tackle are flood mitigation, infrastructure issues and stable municipal funding, which is something he said he is very passionate about. “I'm concerned that our municipal areas, particularly rural Alberta, are struggling,” Nixon said. “They don't have stable and predictable municipal funding and I want to fight for that.” Progressive Conservative candidate Tammy Cote was second in the running and earned 5,296 votes. Nixon commended her on running a strong campaign. “Only another candidate can understand what a marathon of what a general election is,” Nixon said. “I congratulate her on a well-run campaign. I look forward to meeting with her to talking about some of her ideas for the riding.” Although disappointed with the results, Cote said she is still happy with the campaign she ran. She said

she worked with a supportive and wonderful team who worked hard to actively promote their ideas. Right from the start Cote and her team made the commitment to run a very positive campaign, with no negative words mentioned towards any of the other parties or candidates. Cote said she was proud to be a PC representative. She said her team's focus was strictly on their campaign, which included focusing on what they could offer people and what was needed to move the province forward. “I'm really happy with what we did,” Cote said. “We planned to run a clean campaign and focused on what we had to offer. We worked hard on that and did everything we could.” Going forward Cote is not sure of what her impact

On The Other Side
Once again, Mother’s Day, complete with its great expectations, has come and it has gone. The day, itself, is relatively new, initiated at the turn of the century by an innovative young woman who wanted simply to recognize her mom who had passed away. Apparently, this young lady invited a few friends over to help her recognize and honour her mom, not having any idea that her idea would be the lightbulb that would spark dollar signs in the commercial world. Before she knew it, greeting card companies (sorry Hallmark) and florists (flowers say it best) caught on to the idea and the famous Mother’s Day holiday was created.

exhausted florists who miscalulate their orders, run out of flowers, close early, and succumb to liquid refreshment and forget even their own mother. Other possible, but highly unlikely scenarios brought on only by my imagination include the following! It is five minutes to closing and two people are racing to get a Mother’s Day card. They give into road rage, an accident occurs, only minor injuries result, but the police are called. Meanwhile the store closes. No one, the cops included, gets their mom a card. Mom is mad, disappointed and hurt. But, because moms are the same as everyone else, and know they are less than
perfect, they are quick to forgive. But, for some reason, probably because they are simply human, they are less likely to forget. Of course, best case scenario, all of the above is avoided, mom is happy with her gift, the attention, and her kids, no matter what their age, know in their hearts they did well, rose to the occasion and now they can go home and watch their choice of sports. As for me, I am so blessed to be a mom and a grandma who is loved and spoiled not just on Mother’s Day, but always, that I feel quite humbled and slightly bewildered as to why I am so lucky. I joined the ranks of
motherhood on a cold and snowy day in November. I was not awake when my son came into the world, but only became aware of his existence when the nurse’s voice interrupted the lovely darkness where I had been quite happily floating. “Mrs. Mielke, you have a baby boy,” she said. Still groggy from the anesthetic I remember thinking, “I’m a Mrs. I have a baby? Wow! And then I immediately felt exhausted. And here it is more than 40 years later and I still feel exhausted, but, oh, so lucky and so very grateful for Mother’s Day and the fact that I am a mom and a grandma. For me, at least, it truly doesn’t get any better!
Shelter with solitude is great for now
Proofing Deadline Friday at 10 a.m.
Production:
Of course, Mother’s Day, like any other holiday brings with it all sorts of unseen problems. The other siblings come through with the best gifts, raising the bar ridiculously high. And then there is the family who all decide to get together to buy mom the perfect gift. Sounds good! But then somebody forgets to pay. The other ones will pick up the tab, but, more often than not, they won’t do so happily, and in their mind they remember when that particular sibling always snuck away to the bathroom when it was time for dishes. They dream of ways to get even. Another scenario which should not, but could, because of the imperfect world in which we live, be one where ungrateful and/ or busy children, husbands or significant others forget Mother’s Day entirely. Later they will kick themselves, phone and apologize, and mom, who is quick to forgive, will say it’s okay. But chances are good to excellent she will not forget. Other unfortunate incidents which may upset the Mother’s Day apple cart could include poor,
I ate half a tub of cottage cheese and two pickled eggs; my dinner was rinsed down with a cold certified Sarsaparilla. My bachelor life isn’t exactly a display of pure eloquence but is mostly a functional survival with shallow culinary skills, neck tattoos, and drawer full of black Levi’s 501 jeans. A shower curtain
doesn’t existence in my house, so I take an evening bath (Sarsaparilla included) while listening to the first five songs on the Rolling Stones Forty Licks album. I had spent most of the week reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance again. A man can only take so much motorcycle philosophy, music, and restless thrashing around in the tub before he must escape into an evening on his motorcycle. One of the best pieces of advice I can give is — don’t attend a bush party without wearing a good pair of boots and don’t leave town without a full tank of gas. I had no plans on attending any mid-week parties, but I still wear boots upon the cycle (I don’t own much else for footwear other than black steel toed cowboy boots).
My cycle, with its peanut fuel tank, always needs gas — premium fuel only; unless I was in dire straits would I then burn winter windshield washer fluid if I had to get back home. Two months ago I was driving around and chasing a chance to see the Northern Lights; on this night I was just looking to solve some restlessness with solitude. I left town quietly on my cycle. The sun was still high in the sky on the last day of April; it was still cool under the sun and cold in the shade though. I shot north on highway 20 and then ripped it east on the 611. I was nearing the point no return — my trip odometer was closing in on 50 kilometers, hardly considered a great distance but it is the marker for my fuel to be almost half gone. A quick decision guided the
cycle north on 771 and then slightly east on the 13 into the Village of Pigeon Lake. At the road side fuel station I filled up, bought a candy bar, urinated, and inquired with the cashier about any ice cream and soda shops in the area — I was in luck. In the soda shop nearby, a couple of jocks eyeballed me from within their football jackets. The daylight was burning away and I felt I didn’t have the time to enjoy a proper milkshake. I ignored the gazes and bought two shots of chocolate milk from the sophomore behind the counter. After the first shot was gone, I told the freshman on the stool beside me that rock n’ roll hasn’t been the same since Buddy Holly died. I left a tip for the sophomore, told her not to spend it all in the juke
box, and finished my second shot. The clouds in the west had shaded the remaining daylight. It was cold now but I held tense and begun backtracking my route. I haven’t spent a mid-summer’s afternoon with a swell gal in a row boat in a park pond in a while — but the thought warmed me up a little while I rode towards home. I crept past Pas Ka Poo Park and a quick glance confirmed there were no vandals or arsonists in the shadowy dusk. Once back home and having placed the cycle in the garage, I drew another bath to get warm, listened to the first five songs of an Elvis anthology album, and went to bed. Maybe one day I will get a cycle built for two — but until then I’m cool with riding solo.

Reaction to NDP rule BY TREENA MIELKE
The May 5 Alberta election was not a good day for the PC government. After 44 year of holding the reins of political power in the province, Albertans have announced loudly and clearly they are ready for change. And change is what they got. The election saw the New Democratic Party winning in 53 ridings. Wildrose has claimed 21 seats, while the PCs saw their political dynasty collapse as they managed to hold onto only 10. The resignation of Premier Jim Prentice means a byelection will need to be held to determine who will hold the seat in that riding. As of press time last Thursday, a tie in one of the Calgary ridings has yet to be determined. The Liberals and Alberta Party each claimed one seat. According to Elections Alberta, voter turnout was more than 57.01 per cent, the highest voter turnout since 1993 and up nearly four per cent from 2012. Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw was surprised with the election results because, he pointed out, the NDPs have not been major players in Alberta’s political arena. “They came out of nowhere and by 8:40 p.m. they were declared as a majority government. I wouldn’t have believed it.” Pankiw attributes the NDPs success, at least in part, to the charisma and leadership qualities of Rachel Notley. The mayor is not ready to make a prediction regarding how the NDP’s rule will affect municipal government. “It’s far too early to tell,” he said. “I think it will be a huge learning curve. It will take at least six years (for the premier) to figure out the cabinet, especially the finance minister. That is the toughest role to fill in the province.” Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin said he is “cautiously excited” about the new government. “Let’s give them a chance.” McLauchlin said he has had to deal with the PCs every year while he has been reeve. “Every year we have had to go to them hat in hand hoping for substantial funding.” McLauchlin said he understands the need to raise corporate taxes. “It doesn’t need to be the lowest in the country to have a successful economy,” he said. “The NDPs will have to clean house and knock a few heads together,” but Albertans are motivated to want change. McLauchlin said he looking forward to working with the new Wildrose MLAs in Ponoka County. Jason Nixon won the seat in Parliament for the Wildrose in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding, defeating PC candidate Tammy Cote, NDP Hannah Schlamp and Independent Joe Anglin. Ron Orr won the Lacombe-Ponoka riding, defeating NDP candidate Doug hart, PC candidate Peter DeWitt and Tony Jeglum from the Alberta Party. “I’m excited to work with them both,” he said.

calls for service last week
Lask week, Rimbey RCMP Detachment responded to 50 calls for service including several break and enters, assault, sex assault, mail theft, another drug bust and many other serious matters. Thieves behind bars On May 4th, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a Rimbey Mountie observed a truck on Main Street and stopped the driver for a traffic offence. The officer very well knew the 21-year-old male driver and the 33-year-old male passenger, both residents of Rimbey. The 1992 Chevrolet truck they were operating was uninsured and had no registration. Upon further investigation, police seized a huge Jim Bowie style knife that was located beside the driver and other weapons. The alert officer also seized a safe from behind the driver’s seat that contained methamphetamine and drug trafficking paraphernalia. In addition the to the illegal drugs and weapons, a pair of heavy-duty bolt cutters were seized as well as a $1,200 chainsaw. Police checked the serial number
on the chainsaw and found it had been stolen a couple of weeks ago in Rimbey. The victim had the saw chained to the back of his work truck and a thief had cut the chain with bolt cutters during the night and stole it. The arresting officer notified the gentleman who originally owned the chainsaw that it had been recovered and his smile could not be described in a thousand words! In this case, both accused men will be peering out from behind bars for a lengthy period of time for the poor decisions they have made. Sandwich wrappers lead to investigation Officers have been investigating a number of auto thefts in the area. On May 6th, police recovered another stolen Dodge truck behind the soccer field in Rimbey. The investigating officer searched the stolen truck and found sandwich wrappers inside that did not belong to the victim. Police attended local businesses in town and located the identical sandwiches being sold. The investigating member inquired with the sales clerk about who may have purchased the same items last evening. She remembered the man and the investigation finally led to surveillance video of the culprit entering the store and buying the items. Police are now tracking down the thief who is also believed to be responsible for stealing the Dodge truck. He is also believed to be responsible for

stealing a Kubota UTV the night before near Rimbey, which police recovered in the Leslieville area. Holiday trailer recovered Police recovered the stolen holiday trailer, which was reported missing last week. It is believed those responsible for that theft are also responsible for other serious crimes in the Central Alberta area over the last several weeks. The investigation in this case involves numerous detachments and is continuing at this time. Moose on the loose On Thursday, police received numerous calls of a moose on the loose in town. Often, moose and deer will come into town or into a farmer’s yard to have their baby because they know it is
safe from predators such as coyotes, cougars and wolves. After the baby is born, they will head back to the woods when the little one is able to run away from danger. The best thing to do in these cases is to leave the wild animal alone and not threaten or try to chase it. Eventually, it will find its way back to the wilderness. If you have any information regarding these or any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-222-8477 #8477 on Telus Mobility *8477 on Rogers AT&T Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work! Crestmere 4H Multiclub News wrapping up its year April showers bring May flowers, and also the annual highway garbage clean-up. May 2 was the big day this year. Once again 4H clubs from across Alberta along with many other service clubs were out cleaning out our ditches. The Crestomere 4H Multi-club was out in full force, 45 members and parents braved the wind and cleaned a 15km stretch. We found many disgusting items: carcasses and diapers topped the list. Most often found items were empty cigarette packages, Tim Horton’s cups, lots of fast food garbage and so many strange pieces of cardboard; it is amazing how many items are carelessly tossed. Amongst the unwanted items a few treasures were discovered like an iphone and amazingly, money! A five dollar bill, a ten dollar bill and a hundred dollar bill, this was a huge surprise. These treasures along the way motivate us to bend down and get our hands dirty again next year. My mom says this is good for us and builds character. All I felt afterwards was tired and dirty. 4H is starting to wrap
up its 2014-15 year. Feel free to come to
Crestomere School on May 23rd at noon to see
what we have been working on all year.
With Heartfelt Thanks! Well, what an exciting month it has been! Everything went perfectly‌except for one small detail.
To my family, who always believe in me, I am so lucky to have you.

Cote supporters disappointed and surprised by election results BY TREENA MIELKE
PC candidate for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding, Tammy Cote strokes her dog as she and a group of loyal supporters gather in Rocky Mountain House on Tuesday evening to watch the election results come in. The unofficial results of the May 5 provincial election state in no uncertain terms Albertans want change and once the smoke has cleared and all the numbers finalized, the province will have a new majority government with the NDPs taking the reins and the Wildrose as the official opposition. Jason Nixon is clearly the candidate of choice in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding, and the unofficial results show the Wildrose candidate leading by a sizable margin. With the majority of the polls in Tuesday evening, Nixon has 4,735 votes, well ahead of Progressive Conservative candidate Tammy Cote, who trailed with 3,425. In a telephone interview, Tuesday, Nixon chatted briefly about his win. “I feel pretty good, excited,” he said. “A few short months ago people were saying the (Wildrose) party was dead.” He said he is humbled by the support shown him at the polls. “I am ready to get to work right away.” The Wildrose representative said all candidates in the riding worked hard and

deserved recognition for all the time, effort and commitment they put into their campaigns. Progressive Conservative candidate Tammy Cote held her head high and remained gracious and poised at her camp in Rocky Mountain House. “The sun will come up
tomorrow,” she told her loyal supporters, who applauded her, as she struggled to maintain her composure. “We had a plan right from the get-go and I’m not too sure there was much more we could have done.” Cote said she is worried about the province in the hands of the NDP. “I don’t think this can be good for us at all. There has already been significant layoffs and this will not help that situation at all.” Former PC MLA Ty Lund, who was at Cote’s headquarters Tuesday evening blamed former premier, Jim Prentice for the fall of the Tories. “Tammy was a good candidate who worked really hard. But Prentice didn’t have to have an election. It was a bunch of nonsense. And he did a stupid thing with the budget, raising taxes. People are not happy with Prentice.” Brenda Nicolay, who helped Cote with her campaign said she was disappointed with the results. “I am surprised and disappointed. She (Cote) is one class act and a role model for my daughter and other women in politics.” NDP candidate for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding, Hannah Schlamp who received 1,935 votes from the 65 polls and Joe Anglin who ran as an Independent and received 1,238 votes could not be reached for comment.

Senior portraits part of Bentley centennial project BY JUNE NORVILA
RECYCLE
YOUR PAPER!
A local photographer is attempting a special project that is close to her heart for Bentley’s centennial. Bonnie Hoskin of Traditions PHOTOGRAPHY would like to include portraits of as many seniors from the Bentley area as she can, especially of founders of the area, in her Centennial Portrait Exhibit. There will be no cost for the individuals selected. Photos used will be displayed in the Bentley Community Hall at the art show and possibly other places around the town of Bentley during Centennial rodeo/fair days August 6-9. “I have no idea how many (portraits) it could include. The number involved will dictate what kind of display I end up having,” she says. “I have thought of creating portraits of the town’s senior citizens numerous times in the past and with the celebration of Bentley’s centennial I thought this would be the best time in my lifetime to do such a project.” Hoskin, who was raised in Bentley and still lives in the area, is an accredited member of the Professional Photographers of Canada. She will be avail-
able to take pictures at her own studio, at the Bentley Care Centre, at Westview Apartments, at the Bentley Drop-In Center, or will come to the senior’s residence. Bonnie will be at the Bentley Drop-In Centre on May 26 from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to take pictures there. Families or individuals who would consider being included in her special project, at no cost, can contact Bonnie directly by calling 403-748-4458 (res) or 403340 9094 (cell) to get more information or make an appointment. A signed model release will be required. Some seniors may need permission from their families for portraits to be taken. Portraits used will be gifted to the senior or the family after her Centennial display is over. The deadline to have pictures taken to be involved in this special project is June 30. Please pass the word around to other families and individuals from the Bentley area who might consider being included in this special project too. Long time area residents and founders of the community are her main focus.

Putting the finishing touches on the Show Book comprised a portion of the April meeting of the Rimbey and District Horticultural group. The Show is held every August and its success is based on dual participation. The horticulture group plans and the public participates. The book of categories and rules will soon be available to the public. Whether your interest is growing, crafting, photography, baking, preserving, etc. there is a category for you. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Gayle Rondeel, representing the Farmers Market, was the April guest and the subject was apples. Yes, apples can be grown in this part of Alberta. If you want apples that have not been exposed to pesticides, then you can chose to grow your own. Find a spot in your yard and plant a tree. It will take a while to produce fruit, but is well worth the wait. The Farmers Market will be holding an Apple Fest on the September long weekend. Everything Apple. If you are a lucky apple tree owner and would like to donate some for juicing at that time, call Gayle at 403-704-4001. The Farmers Market Planning Committee can use more members who meet once a month at the Market. Call Gayle at 403-704-4001. The Horticulture Group is considering a one-day bus trip in May or June. Stay tuned for the proposed destination for this get-away. Now is the time when most gardeners divide their perennials. If you are dividing, don’t pitch them over the fence. If they grow a foot tall or less they can be used at the Bluffton Rock garden, (as soon as the moles are trapped). Call 403-843-6805 to have them picked up.

Regionalized Fire Service Agreement ceremony held Tona said, “and as one region we must be prepared to share services and share economies of scale. We have an excellent relationship with the county and it is always a pleasure to plan and work with CAO Cutforth.” The agreement includes the fifteen-year provision for the county to conclude the purchase of land, building and equipment. During that time, Rimbey will be serviced by the county at no cost. “Our firefighters are community ambassadors, skilled and professional in all they do and we look forward to working with them in our community, having their attendance at our functions, and supporting them as they request. Each and every member is a class act and we are truly blessed for their dedication to our safety,” Tona said.

Finishing off the 4-H year strong BY SYLVIA TRAUTMAN
The last couple months have been very busy and lots of fun. Many members enjoyed a ski trip to Canyon. The snow was great and those who went had lots of fun! In March we had our farm tour. Since we have many families we do a virtual farm tour. Everyone’s calves looked great. We also judged a pen of heifers outside, which was very chilly! We also had district public speaking. From our club Sylvia Trautman placed 1st in seniors and moved on to Regionals. Leah Trenson also did a great job! Our district also had presentations. From our club Kaiden Eadie placed 2nd in seniors and in juniors Carter Eadie placed 1st and Tim Trenson placed 2nd. There were lots of great presenters. Kaiden Eadie also placed 1st at Regionals, where he advanced to Provincials and did a great job. Our mini show was lots of fun and we learned lots. We had fun brushing up on previous skills and learning
new ones. We also judged a class of finished steers. Everyone’s steers and heifers behaved well and looked great. We are all super excited for our achievement day. Recently we had our Interclub live carcass judging. There was lots of steers and they all looked great. Jent Hoekstra and Collin Kyknan judged the steers
and did a great job. We all appreciated them coming out. We will also be going to the Family Meats in Ponoka to look at our carcasses. During show and sale the places will be announced for the fifteen steers. We are all super excited to see how we did. On May 2nd we also helped with Highway
Cleanup. It felt great to help our environment. The ditches look great. As these next weeks fast approach we are leading, brushing, blowing, working with our projects and doing last minute preparations. We are super excited to show our projects that we have been working on all year. Our show and Sale was on May 10 and 11.

At a helmet ceremony on Tuesday, May 5 Charlie Cutforth, CAO for Ponoka County, and deputy mayor and firefighter Paul Payson and Rimbey fire chief John Weisgerber handed management and operation of the Rimbey Fire Services to Ponoka County. The transaction provides a tremendous opportunity for the firefighters who will now be able to train with a larger group, have more specialized training opportunities, full time administrative support and opportunity for advancement. Interim Chief Administrator Donna Tona is pleased with the success of the agreement, the support from the firefighters and the ease in which Rimbey and the County of Ponoka finalized the agreement. “We are all one region,”

He was born on April 26, 1935, the second youngest son of five boys, to the late Carlyle and Flora Casey. He was predeceased by two premature infants and three brothers; Victor, Maitland and Delbert; daughter-on-law, Cathy, as well as one grandson Nathan. Elmer is survived by three daughters; Terri (Darren Halverson) of Port Howe, N.S., Shelly Casey, Heather (Gunnar Dudenhoeffer) and son Adam and step-son Shayne (Trinity Leamont) all residing in Alberta; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one brother, Carlyle Jr. (Mary) of Port Howe, N.S. In the fall of 1956 he went to British Columbia to work on heavy equipment. Elmer married Dina Trenholm in 1957. In the early 70’s, Dina and Elmer leased a garage with a lunch counter in Port Philip from Irving Oil. In 1975 they purchased Orrin’s Diner from the late Orrin Blois. He traveled between Newfoundland and the U.S. Between 1981 - 1991 he worked for North Shore Forestry in Pugwash. Elmer headed west again in 2000’s, making his home in Rimbey, Alberta. Mama’s Hands I saw you hide your hands in line, behind that lady fair, I noticed too, hers soft and white immaculate from care. But Ma, I say, it’s no disgrace to have workin’ hands like you, and had she lived the life you have, she’d have hands just like it too. But her hands have never hauled in wood or worked in God’s good earth. They’ve never felt the bitter cold, or chopped ice for waitin’ stock, they’ve never doctored sick ones, or dressed a horse’s hock, They’ve never pulled a hip-locked calf, or packed water to the barn. They’ve probably never patched blue jeans, or had worn ol’socks to darn. They’ve never touched a young’n, or caressed a fevered head, with hands so gently folded, all night beside his bed. They’ve never scrubbed a kitchen floor, or done dishes every day. They’ve never guided with those hands a child who’s lost the way. They’ve never made a Christmas gift, shaped by a lovin’ hand. They’ve never peeled apples, nor vegetables they’ve canned. They’ve never worn a blister, or had calluses to show, for all they’ve done for others, and the kindness I know. So you see, my dearest Mama yours are hands of love. And I know the Lord took notice when he met you up above. Loved and missed, Daughter and family

GARNICK 1969-2015 It is with great sadness the family of Zane Paul Garnick of Rimbey Alberta, announces his sudden passing following a tragic accident at his home, on April 29, 2015 at the age of 45 years. Zane was born May 20,1969 in Eckville Alberta to Zoley and Carole Garnick. Zane married Denise Scholing August 24, 1991 and together they had 4 children; Colemen, Dayne, Kelcie, and Keefer. Zane worked as a pipeliner following high school and then got his class one drivers licence and went trucking. All through these jobs, farming remained his ultimate goal. So, while working as an oilfield operator he began building up a cow herd at his parents farm. Zane’s career focus eventually became operating alone. Zane was highly respected in the oilfield for his work ethic and dedication. He did his best to teach these qualities to his children. When not at work Zane enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, driving his Teryx and working on things in his shop with his kids. Zane is predeceased by his parents; Zoley and Carole. Zane is survived by his wife of 23 years, Denise and their four children Colemen, Dayne, Kelcie, and Keefer, as well as parents in laws Andy and Tina Scholing, sister in laws and their families, numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. A Celebration of Zane’s life was held from the Peter Lougheed Community Centre in Rimbey, Alberta on Thursday May 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Brian Allan officiating. Fundraiser to be held at Beatty House for families in Nepal BY TREENA MIELKE
A fundraiser, which will help provide insight into the plight of single women in Nepal, will be held Thursday evening at the Beatty house to raise funds for families in that earthquake torn country. The May 14 fundraiser will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dessert and coffee will be served and a film screening of amazing women and youth from Canada and Nepal who have shared their stories of courage in the face of adversity will be shown. The fundraiser is being sponsored by Rimbey Community Wellness and Crossing Community Art Project. Edith Regier, the founder and artistic director of Crossing Community Art Project, a non-profit organization founded in 2002, said single mothers in Nepal are among the most marginal population in that country and are desperately in need of help. Crossing Communities Art Project is an organization that engages in transdisciplinary collaborations with remotely located women and youth and stages audience interactive conversations locally and internationally. “We use what’s called transmedia story
telling which is collaboratively telling stories through a collection of visual media such as videos, drawings, performance, photography and dance,” she said. The soft-spoken founder of the art project who recently moved to the Buck Lake area is looking forward to the evening and an opportunity to share her insight into the lives of families in need in Nepal. Her project, which began in the mid-90s in a Manitoba prison for women as the Portage Art Project has a wonderful history of creating a better understanding and providing the potential for social transformation between women of diverse backgrounds. At its inception, the project involved a series of visual workshops and included Passing Pictures with Prisoners, an exchange of letters and pictures between imprisoned women and their artist collaborators. The art project expanded in 2007 and videos of participants from Canada describing personal histories of self-harm were exchanged with Nepali women and youth who then made their own videos which were exchanged. The process of making lookinginspeakingout.com took place over more than four

years in Thailand, Nepal and Canada. The participatory video Empty, was collectively created in CCAPs Winnipeg studio. In February, 2009 several Crossing Communities artists including Regier traveled to Nepal, staying in a rural hotel for a month. A widow from Nepal, after seeing the videos brought from Canada, shared stories of her life, telling how her husband had
isolated and abused her and how she was forced to wear a white sari when he died. Her video, White To Red was screened in the lookinginspeakingout.com forum event in Kathmandu. Developing a sense of self-worth is inextricably linked to issues around inclusion in society and community, Regier said. “Awareness of self and community is the first step towards happiness.”
