Drivers asked to respect the tractors on the road Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Ah, spring in Chilliwack. Tractors are out on the roads, and the smell of fresh cut hay, and manure is in the air. Motorists are being urged to slow down and use caution when sharing the road with tractors and other large farm vehicles. Dairy farmer Gail Derksen said she was “smoked” by a speeding pickup while driving her tractor on Lickman Road. It happened about noon on Friday as the Derksens were in the middle of cutting and harvesting hay on the family dairy farm. She was about to make a turn into the driveway. The tractor was almost at a complete stop in the northbound lane of Evans Road, when the truck came up behind her, passed on the left and hit the front forks of the tractor. The truck bounced off and ended up on the shoulder of the road, after almost hitting some trees. “I was fine, and my machinery was fine because I was on a tractor,” Derksen told The Progress. Gail and Steve Derksen live and work at the dairy farm that’s been in Steve’s family for 50 plus years. Their kids learned to drive a tractor at 14. “We realize we live on a very busy road, and we try hard to be careful,” she said. “We are very vigilant because we know it’s an issue.” Nonetheless there are a handful of incidents and near misses every year, she said, including one where she was physically and verbally assaulted by a driver who didn’t want to respect the tractor she was driving with a full load of hay, and followed her with the intent of getting in her face about it. Derksen is asking people in Chilliwack to slow down, and pay attention. Continued: FARM/ p6

An excavator stands at the ready outside the gutted home of the Janzen family on Llanberis Way Tuesday morning. Investigators have confirmed three bodies were removed from the home, however they have yet to formally confirm their identity. JESSICA PETERS/ PROGRESS

Coroner to investigate Janzen deaths Jessica Peters The Progress Laurel Janzen sent out a message on her Twitter account on March 9. “Watching someone I love in unbearable pain everyday for 18 months and I feel helpless,” she wrote, adding: #weneedhelp. Her 19-year-old daughter, Emily Janzen, had been suffering from debilitating migraines since elementary school, but in the past year and half they had left her bedridden, ill for days and ultimately unable to attend UBC for music studies. Both women’s Twitter accounts are filled with messages of hopelessness and despair over the migraines and their effect on Emily’s otherwise promising young life. But Emily’s sense of humour and hopefulness are also chronicled online. “Whenever I start to feel sorry for myself, I just thank God I’m still alive,” one of Emily’s most recent posts read. “I complain about all the pain, but at least I’m here to feel it.” Now, the B.C. Coroners Service is launching an investigation into the events that led to Emily

and Laurel’s deaths at their home in Popkum, along with the deaths of father Randy Janzen, and his sister Shelly. RCMP have been slowly confirming what people close to the family have been reporting since last Thursday — that Randy Janzen confessed on Facebook to killing all three women. He said he shot his daughter as a way to release her from the pain, and that he shot his wife Laurel “because a mother should never have hear the news her baby has died.” In another post he confessed to also killing his

sister, Aldergrove resident Shelly Janzen, to save her from the “shame” of what he’d done. Friends have told media they saw the posts immediately, at about noon, and went to his sister’s house to see if she was okay. Newspapers were piled up and there was no activity, so they turned to the police. By 4 p.m. Thursday, RCMP had surrounded the Janzen home on Llanberis Way in Popkum, believing Randy Janzen was inside. A police helicopter circled the small community for hours, keeping watch on the house and the surrounding area. Llanberis Way is an idyllic no-through street, backed by the former Minter Gardens site and tucked in a forested area filled with tall cedar trees. On Thursday, neighbours arriving home from work were kept at bay on Bunker Road, as RCMP, a tactical unit, and the K9 unit moved in on the house. Other neighbours were told to stay indoors for their safety. After hours of slow activity, something changed as RCMP and the K9 unit began to move in quickly. Continued: ANSWERS/ p3

Bursary established as community seeks answers ANSWERS from Front There were five distinctive bangs, which sounded like gun shots to the dozens of onlookers. Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said on Friday those bangs were the result of “less-than-lethal force and distraction devices, in order to attempt to make contact with an individual believed to be in the house.” By this time, rumours were spreading among the neighbours and passersby that the man inside had killed his family and was in the middle of a standoff with police. And then, without warning, a distinctive boom rocked the neighbourhood. A fire had broken out inside the home and caused an explosion. A plume of thick, black, and dark grey smoke rose from the house, causing at least one volunteer firefighters who had been watching from Yale Road to jump in his vehicle and head to the firehall. One woman stayed glued to her cell phone, keeping connected with her daughter who lived near the Janzens. “She’s scared,” the woman said. “She’s afraid.” By 7:30 p.m., the house was engulfed in flames following a loud explosion, presumably with the Janzen family inside. The perimeter was widened and firetrucks arrived quickly. RCMP were unable to get inside the home to access the crime scene until sometime Friday.

“At this point, our priority is to speak with anybody who had been in contact with the Janzen family in a three-week period leading up to the incident on May 7,” says Sgt. Stephanie Ashton. The bodies in the Popkum home were badly burned, making identification difficult. However, on Tuesday morning it was announced that the B.C. Coroners Office would be launching an investigation into the events leading up to the deaths, including whether Emily’s health concerns played a role. This could include probing into what sort of treatment Emily was

given for her migraines, and how Fraser Health treats patients.

Migraine pain Emily was well known in Chilliwack theatrical and musical circles, having become an accomplished soprano singer. Her life was full of friendships, volunteer work, and involvement several groups, including the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts. Her name was often in the pages of the Chilliwack Progress, as part of productions like Seussical the Musical. Friends and former fellow cast

members have been posting loving tributes to the young singer, recalling favourite moments on and off the stage, and thanking her for being a friend. But Emily’s life was also full of a quiet, painful misery, suffering from almost constant migraines. “In two years I haven’t gone more than 12 hours without a headache livin’ the dream,” is just one of several tweets Emily sent out over the past months. Much of the time, it seems, Emily either smiled through the pain or resigned from her social life. She had even stopped singing most

Looking for answers While RCMP have yet to identify the Janzen family as the victims in the fire, they confirm three bodies were recovered from the gutted home. They are now asking anyone who had contact with the family from mid-April until May 7 to contact them, no matter how small the detail is. Police are hoping to get a clearer picture of the events leading up to the fire.

recently, which is mentioned in her father’s apparent online confession. Migraines differ from run-of-themill headaches, according to medical literature. They include several stages that patient experiences, from the oncoming symptoms that can last for one or two days. That is accompanied and/or followed by migraine aura, which can include visual problems or vision loss, loss of sensation in body parts, and speech problems. Migraines can last as long as three days, or more in extreme cases and include nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light, and pain that pulses. There are numerous triggers for migraines, and several types of medications designed to help with migraines. Finding a suitable medication for each patient can prove difficult, however, and many of the medications have strong side effects.

The Emily Janzen Memorial Bursary Fund has been established following the aspiring singer’s death last week.

A bursary has already been set up to honour Emily Janzen’s dreams of becoming a singer. The Emily Janzen Memorial Bursary Fund will be given to students pursuing a music education. Initially, the goal was $1,000 as seed money to be put into a longterm deposit. The funds are being administered by the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra, the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts, and the Chilliwack Academy of Music. Within 18 hours, the fundraiser had already hit $2,100. “Emily, former student and instructor, forever a part of our CSOPA family, will be fondly remembered for her beautiful voice and amazing spirit with the legacy of this bursary fund,” said AnneLise Woyke, office manager of the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts. For a link to the fundraiser, see this story online at www.theprogress. com.

‘There is not anger, just sadness around this tragedy’ Monique Tamminga Black Press Lifetime Aldergrove resident Shelly Janzen, 53, was a beautiful, gentle soul who loved her family dearly, said those who knew her. More than 100 members of her church, Bethel Mennonite on 56 Avenue in the North Otter area, gathered to grieve on Sunday. Shelly had been a member of the church since the day she was born. “Shelly had a gentle spirit. She was a real giver to people and to animals,” said Linda Hoock, Bethel church assistant administrator. Police descended on Janzen’s home, in the 2500 block of 271A Street, on Thursday afternoon, May 7. Her brother Randy Janzen is now thought to be responsible for killing her sometime earlier last week. He is accused of killing his family and confessing to the crimes in a chilling post on Facebook on Thursday, May 7.

In his Facebook post, he said he couldn’t watch his daughter Emily suffer any more debilitating migraine headaches so he shot her, his wife Laurel and then later his sister, so she wouldn’t have to suffer the shame of what he had done. The Facebook post is what tipped police off. A neighbour of Janzen’s in Aldergrove said she was a quiet woman who kept to herself. Another neighbour said she was very sweet. Shelly was a “very reliable” newspaper carrier for the Langley Times and the Aldergrove Star for the past six months. It was a job she really enjoyed, said Hoock. Several stacks of undelivered papers could be seen piled up at her home as police investigated the murder on Friday. Shelly had never married. She cared for her mother, who lived with her. Her mother, Kathy, passed away last August. Randy, her sister-in-law and her niece were everything

to Shelly. They were all very close, said Hoock. “Randy was very kind to her,” said Hoock. Randy grew up in the church too but was no longer an active member. “There is not anger, just sadness around this tragedy,” said Hoock. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over both the crime scene in Aldergrove and in Popkum, east of Chilliwack, on Thursday. Just after 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, Langley RCMP received information obtained through social media that indicated a Rosedale man had harmed his family members. As a result of this information, Langley RCMP attended the 271A Street home and located a deceased individual in the home, said IHIT in a press release. Fur ther information received through social media indicated there was a potential second location of concern in the Rosedale/Popkum area.

Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP attended with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team. They attempted to make contact with a man believed to be inside the home.

Approximately four hours after police arrived on scene, gunfire could be heard and the residence caught fire and was quickly engulfed in flames. It’s believed Randy killed

himself. The B.C. Coroner Service will be investigating the triple murder-suicide, looking at the circumstances that led to Randy Janzen’s actions.

Canada will be streaming into the valley to test their mettle in the first Firefit challenge of the year. They’ll don the heavy gear and start by running up six flights of stairs carrying a hose. Then they hoist another hose before running back down the stairs. The next gruelling phase has them driving a steel beam using a mallet and then running

50 metres to douse a target with a live hose. As if that weren’t enough, the final leg of FireFit sees competitors dragging a heavy mannequin about 30 metres to the finish line. That last stretch is apparently the hardest. The heavy-duty event tests the mettle of competitors in terms of strength, cardiovascular fitness and stamina. The opening ceremo-

Run For Mom raises more than $22,000 Participants at this year’s Run For Mom in Chilliwack raised more than $22,000 for Chilliwack General Hospital on Saturday. The annual Mother’s Day event, now in its 17th year, raises money for the purchase of equipment for CGH’s maternity ward. This year nursing staff at the hospital identified an infant warmer as this year’s goal. With a purchase price of around $20,000, the unit can now be bought, participants heard. Since its inception, the event has raised more than a quarter-million dollars for CGH through the Fraser

Health Care Foundation. This year organizers added a few changes. The distance for the chiptimed run was increased to 10km from 8km. And the date was changed from Mother’s Day to the day before. The start and finish location was also new. It began at the old parade ground at Canada Education Park. Nearly 250 participants chose between the 5km run/walk, or the 10k run. Both distances followed along the scenic Rotary Trail. For video from this year’s event, go to www.theprogress.com

Green light, rules for pot producers in ALR Province limits cities’ power to control marijuana growers Jeff Nagel Black Press The province has given the green light for medical marijuana to be produced in the Agricultural Land Reserve despite objections from some cities. Along with the formal change to the ALR regulation making medical cannabis an allowed use is a standard that municipalities are expected to follow in passing local bylaws to control any federally licensed commercial pot producers within their boundaries. Delta, Langley Township,

Abbotsford and Kelowna must have approval from the province on any bylaws they pass affecting farmland, so Victoria has a hammer to force them to comply. Other municipalities may have a somewhat freer hand in passing restrictions but they cannot prohibit licensed pot farms outright. The province’s bylaw standard sets out setbacks from streams and property lines, a maximum footprint size for the facility, and minimum distances from parks, schools and urban or ALR boundaries. The agriculture ministry said it expects all local bylaws to comply

with the bylaw standard and the amended regulation by early fall, adding it sought to ensure as much ALR land is used for agriculture as possible while balancing other requirements. Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese, one of the municipal leaders who opposed allowing the construction of heavily fortified pot factories on ALR land at all, said Friday he is studying the new rules. Froese said the province appears to have taken into account many issues raised by municipalities, but added he is still concerned cities will face higher costs to regulate the facilities and police quiet country roads for any criminals they may attract.

“The biggest concerns we have is safety and protection of the environment,” he said. Langley Township has already set a business licence fee of $5,000 for medical marijuana producers and Froese hopes that won’t have to change. “That gives us some control over inspection and that’s important,” he

said. “Medical marijuana, as far as I’m concerned, is a pharmaceutical. It’s a lot different than just growing tomatoes.” Under the provincial rules, pot producers on ALR land will still have to pay industrial property tax rates, not the lower agricultural rate.

Farm vehicles on the road mean caution FARM from Front “These are your neighbours,” she said about the people out there driving tractors. “We’re not there to get in anyone’s way or to slow them down. But this is a farming community. We have

a job to do.” There are even signs on Evans Road and elsewhere showing pictogram of someone riding a tractor with text that says: “Respect farm vehicles.” Chilliwack is a city

where 67 per cent of the land base is agricultural land, so it matters. Derksen climbed down from her vehicle after the collision, and touched base with an eye witness who saw what happened. The other

driver’s truck was “annihilated” on the one side where it collided with part of her tractor, she said. Her turn signal was definitely on and she shoulder-checked more than once, but the speeding driver of the pickup told her he had been rushing to get someone to hospital who was suffering from heatstroke. Now the Derksens want to raise some community awareness about the need for extra caution around farm vehicles. “I’ve become very passionate about this,” she said. The tractors are not allowed on the highway but they are allowed to motor through town. “My real concern is that people don’t seem to respect the fact that farm vehicles are very big and have very limited stopping time.” Spring time in Chilliwack always means more farm vehicles on the roads, said Coun. Chris Kloot, chair of the Agriculture Advisor y Committee, who also grew up on a dairy farm. Farmers are toiling hard to get their cover crops from the winter mowed, harvested, fields fertilized, and then corn planted, in some cases. Coincidentally Kloot answered his phone when The Progress called him, while he was on a tractor haying. Although he runs a broiler chicken farm, he was helping to bring in the hay at his brother’s farm, so he said he understands the frustration felt by the Derksens. “Everyone needs to be a little more aware.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com

Jennifer Feinberg Lots of people in Chilliwack still don’t have a regular family doctor. But there are health officials working on the problem. A community forum is set for May 19 at 6 p.m. at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre to explain how Chilliwack Division of Family Practice is working to improve “attachment” and “access” to primary care providers. ‘A GP For Me’ is the province-wide initiative that local doctors and nurses have been chipping away at, supporting better provider/patient relationships, and improved access to primary care for anyone in B.C. seeking it, including after hours care. “Attachment” in this context means actually finding a family physician, and “access” refers to how long it takes a patient to get an appointment. At the Thursday night forum at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (next to Chilliwack secondary) they’ll be talking about ways primary care is changing in Chilliwack, and details about the Chilliwack Primary Care Clinic, an update on doctor recruitment and retention and more. A dedicated phone line has been set up at 604-7950034, for anyone seeking a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Ask for Pam. Everyone is invited to “join in the conversation” about improving health care at the Chilliwack Partners in Health Care Community Forum. Light refreshments will be served at both events being hosted in Chilliwack (46361 Yale Road) and in Agassiz (1525 MacKay Crescent) on May 19 and 21 respectively, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call 604-795-0034 to RSVP or email afarooq@divisionsbc.ca.

R AESIDE

The Alberta election, held last Tuesday, may or may not prove to be a seismic shift in Canadian politics. The governing Progressive Conservatives, in power under seven different premiers since 1971, were dramatically thrown out of office by voters — capturing just 10 seats and coming in third. Taking their place as the government of Alberta is the Alberta NDP, a party which has never held more than 16 seats in the legislature. The NDP won 54 seats, although there was a tie vote in one Calgary riding. Final results there are not yet official. Political scientists are having a field day with the election. There are many reasons for the fall of the PCs and the rise of the NDP, but the overriding one seems to be that the PCs took power for granted after 44 years. While new PC leader Jim Prentice was capable and experienced, his actions in luring most of the opposition Wildrose Party’s MLAs to his caucus, and bringing in a budget that punished ordinary Albertans, seemed to infuriate voters. The NDP under Rachel Notley seemed the best option for many of them. This election could have implications for the federal election in October. The Conservatives won all but one seat in Alberta in 2011. If there is a significant shift away from them, it could hurt the party’s chances of being re-elected as government. The federal Liberals could also be hurt by the shift to the NDP provincially, while the federal NDP in Alberta, who now hold just one seat there, are likely to benefit. In B.C., there are also implications. Notley opposes the Northern Gateway pipeline, which would now seem to have little chance of being built. She backs the twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipeline, and she also wants more Alberta oil processed in Canada — something many people of all political stripes agree with. It is quite likely that she and B.C. Premier Christy Clark can work well together on many issues, including pipelines and adding value to resources extracted in Canada. ~ Black Press

B.C. V IEWS

Is the Orange Tsunami headed west? VICTORIA – Albertans have always laughed about their longstanding reputation as a reckless, immature society. The classic bumper sticker, now available as a T-shirt or coffee cup in several variations, states: “Please God, give us one more oil boom, we promise not to p--- it away this time.” Now they’ve thrown out the government that finally tried to stop blowing money like a roughneck fresh out of the bush. Jim Prentice had the gall to propose raising income taxes for high wage earners, doing away with former Alberta treasurer Stockwell Day’s signature flat tax. In response, voters have abruptly replaced the 44-year Progressive Conservative dynasty with an upstart NDP that wants to tax the rich and corporations even more. Facing an oil slump, layoffs and a huge structural

deficit in Alberta’s lavish public ser vice, NDP premier-elect Rachel Notley is committed to a 50-per-cent increase in the minimum wage and another “review” of resource royalties. One headline in a national paper summed it up: “Go home, Alber ta. You’re drunk.” Tom In the sober FLETCHER days after the election, a few truths emerge. Alberta hasn’t been a fiscally conservative, small-government place for a long time. Among other things, it has ratcheted up teacher and nurse wages across the country. Alberta is broke, again, and even the NDP is afraid to resort to a sales tax. The minimum wage hike is a

pet policy of Canada’s labour federations, which somehow remain convinced that poverty can be eliminated by state order. On the positive side, Notley has promised to end corporate and union donations to political parties, as has already been done federally. B.C. should be next, but the gravy train of business donations is too tempting for our nominally Liberal government. Here at the B.C. legislature, an NDP staffer passed out cans of Orange Crush to celebrate. NDP leader John Horgan pronounced himself “ecstatic,” and hastened to assure reporters that Notley is “as competent as she sounds.” Notley now has to sort through a caucus that includes typical NDP place-holders, college students and union staff running in faint-hope constituencies. Soon after the result, the party pulled down its website platform and

candidate biographies, as Notley began phoning energy companies to reassure them Alberta will be “A-OK” on her watch. Horgan likes to describe the “capital flight” from new NDP governments as if it’s just a show put on by big business. Plummeting stock prices and relocation of corporate offices are all staged, according to the party line, nothing to do with actual investment conditions created by NDP policies. This fiction is all Horgan dares to say publicly, because it’s what his party base devoutly believes. Besides, they’re only branch offices of multinational oil companies like Shell, Horgan said. He used his favourite Tommy Douglas quote, about the bad news of a big oil company leaving. “The good news is, the oil is staying here.” B.C.’s natural gas might be

staying here too. Horgan insists he supports a natural gas export industr y, but his party seems more concerned with an ascending Green Party, and an urban base that believes you can run a resource economy on windmills and solar panels. Notley supports twinning the TransMountain pipeline, while Horgan continues to insist he has no opinion on the project Adrian Dix so memorably opposed. The Alberta NDP has a steep learning curve ahead. The B.C. NDP has a couple of years to see if the appearance of a like-minded Alberta government is a boost for them, or a cautionary tale for voters. Canada has no business in war Congratulations to Mark Strahl on his latest communication to his constituents. He is now willing to ask his voters how we feel about some of Canada’s most important Federal issues. Though this discussion has been non-existent on Strahl’s website and in his “Have your say!” brochure Chilliwack voters now have a genuine opportunity to speak to our MP. Canada is in an endless loop of military action. The USA’s financial policies continue to depress their economy, and their only solution is the distraction of war. Though the current Canadian government seems to be wedded to this same foreign policy,

our MPs have not provided any opportunities for the citizens to decide if this is the best course of action for our separate sovereign nation. The media hypes fear and the need for war. Lone nut lunatics killing police officers and drug addled pressure cooker bomb makers present frightening scenarios of chaotic events. While these events may present reasons to review our response to anti-social acts caused by mental illness and drug abuse, they do not constitute valid grounds to invade foreign nations. They do not provide reasons to further legislate the removal of the personal rights and freedoms of law

abiding Canadian Citizens. Canada has no business in the War in Syria. Our actions there will only further any foreign cause to harm Canadians. Bill C-51 strips the rights of lawabiding Canadians. Even though this opinion poll is an election tactic, Mark Strahl has provided his voters with an opportunity contribute to meaningful Federal discussions. I urge everyone return Mark Stahl’s latest tax-payer funded opinion poll, and let him know that Canadians will not go to war for American economic problems, and that we value our personal freedoms. handicapped scooter in the first place. I avoid Vedder Road and Yale Road like the plague. But when I absolutely must take short stretches of those two roads -- or any other road that doesn’t have bike lanes or shoulders -- I am literally taking my life into my hands. And today was even worse... I had my

three-year-old granddaughter on my lap as my scooter was literally hugging the curb, not moving, until there was enough break in the traffic that was flying by, not slowing down in the least, to make it to the corner and get off Vedder Road. And I was desperately muttering, “Slow down people, please, please

NDP takes aim at Greens In response to Art Green’s letter (Green party has vision for Canada, Chilliwack Progress, May 8), I am confused by his argument. He appears not to have read my original letter (Investing in children is an investment in the future Chilliwack Progress, May 1). He claims that “the very reason that these children are vulnerable is because their families lack a liveable income and support systems…”, yet I referred to the UBCHELP study that demonstrated that “most vulnerable children are in the middle class.” It is stereotype to think of all or even most vulnerable children as poor. Furthermore, as I stated, the proposal is that the cost to parents “would be capped at a maximum of $15/day,” so the $15 is a maximum rather than a pre-determined fixed user fee. The program would be universal and so offer childcare to all parents and families in a manner

that would minimize financial and other barriers. The details would vary with provinces and would require provincial participation. This is about children and the health and welfare of all children. The NDP understands the need to offer a complex environmental and social agenda to Canadians. We understand and commit to the UN vision of strategies for sustainable development that meet the needs of this and future generations. Early childhood education is a critical need for this and future generations. For the Green Party candidate in Mission/Matsqui/ Fraser Canyon to attempt to attack the NDP universal childcare agenda shows their disregard for the human or social policy agenda, which we believe must be integrated with environmental policies for responsible governance. CSO welcomes the vocal sensation Vivace Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus season finale Live music is alive and well in Chilliwack. The Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus has been leading the way for local live music, and their memorable 2015 concert series closes with a bang on May 30 at the Cultural Centre with featured guest artists, Vivace. The powerful Vivace will be backed by the CSO that night, under the able direction of the CSO music director Paula DeWit.  This concert with its stellar lineup of beloved classical and contemporary music, “presents the perfect opportunity for neophytes who may wish to dive into the world of symphonic music for the first time, she said. Vivace includes four exceptional singers: Melody Courage, Tiffany Desrosiers, Marc Devigne and Michael Ciufo. The group started merging their talents in 2010 performing at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Since then, they have gone on to tour the United States and Canada, captivating audiences everywhere they go. They are the latest to join the classical and pop crossover phenomena known as “popera and audiences jump up to offer standing ovations once they hear the incredible harmonies. They are already being called the best classicalpop group since The Canadian

Tenors. The stirring combination of powerful male voices and emotionally driven female vocals come together to create a sound that is exclusively theirs. With a rich and diverse repertoire ranging from pop, to arias, to their own original material, Vivace is a fresh new take on the classical and modern music of today. “Treat yourself and be entertained by this amazingly talented group, now on track to rival in popularity with our all time favourite musical standouts like The Canadian Brass and The Canadian Tenors, said DeWit. The CSO prides itself on a fantastic commitment and connection with youth and they plan to continue to foster young musicians at the May 30 performance. Grace Owens, 14, will open the series-closing concert. She has been singing since she could talk, and since her whole family loves to sing, her vocal musicality is something that she picked up quite naturally. In Grade 1, she started playing the guitar and just this past January she started singing lessons. When she went to a Taylor Swift concert as a six-year-old, she told her mom that she would like to play and sing for lots of people on a stage one day. “The CSO is now delighted to provide this opportunity for her.

Karl Jiung, 11, will play Minuet in G by J.S. Bach on his guitar. He’s back performing by popular demand after the last concert on April 11. The CSO event is the perfect family-friendly outing. Ever After Princess Party Events will be greeting patrons in the Cultural Centre lobby beginning at 6:30 p.m. and again later during the intermission. Founded by local theatre personalities Emily Hamel and Pauline Dynowski, they pride themselves on providing high quality entertainment for birthday parties or events. “Be sure to enjoy and catch their antics in the lobby.â€? The fairy tale characters are singers as well as actors, and their impressive talent is known to magically transform any festive occasion. â€œTheir presence in the lobby will enhance the evening’s concert experience for the younger members of the audience and provide added enjoyment for all.â€? • The Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with special guests Vivace take the stage at 7:30 p.m. at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre HUB International Theatre on May 30. Tickets by calling 604-391SHOW (-7469) or online at www.chilliwackculturalcentre. ca or in person at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.Â

Vivace includes four exceptional singers: Melody Courage, Tiffany Desrosiers, Marc Devigne and Michael Ciufo.

Chilliwack band Medevil is still basking in the afterglow of a provincial win on the heavy metal landscape. As the band prepares to head to Toronto on June 6 for the final rounds of the Wacken Open Air Metal Battle Canada, they will first be playing a celebratory gig at the Echo Room night club on May 23. It’s the first time local metal fans will get to see the band live. Members of Medevil said they were stoked by the win, and now have their sights set on the ultimate prize of the global gathering, Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. “We’ve never been so excited for something in our lives, but we hope this will not be the end of it,” said Medevil front man Liam Collingwood. Medevil was formed in 2011 by Liam Collingwood (vocals), Eric Wesa (bass) and Ross Collingwood (drums), and guitarists Gary Cordsen and Brett Gibbs. Next up is the nationals in Toronto and then hopefully the worlds. Medevil performs live Saturday, May 23 at 9 p.m. at the Echo Room with special guests, My Own Chaos and Obsidian. Show is 19+ doors at 9 p.m. $10.

Besides the very obvious physical exterior changes a woman goes through during pregnancy, there are other more subtle changes that occur in the mouth. Many pregnant women ask “why do my gums bleed all of a sudden when I brush and floss my teeth? Why are my gums so sensitive when I brush and floss? The constant hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can play havoc on the gums. Research shows the gums are much more sensitive and prone to inflammation from the bacteria in your mouth during pregnancy. This increase in inflammation can make the gums more delicate and prone to bleeding when normal brushing and flossing forces are applied. In addition, growths called pyogenic granulomas

(pregnancy tumours) can occur. These benign growths are usually raised, red, bleed very easily, and can range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters. They can grow on many parts of the body not only in the mouth. If small enough they resolve on their own with good hygiene, but if they grow large enough your dentist may have to remove them. Research shows a strong association between gingivitis and preeclampsia, premature birth, and low birth weight infants. This does occur more in severe forms of gingivitis and periodontitis. As a result, pregnant woman should make sure they are educated on, and practice proper oral hygiene care. Regular checkups with dentists and hygienists are very important during pregnancy and even pre-pregnancy (to eliminate any existing gingival/ periodontal conditions).

or into BC to secure employment, housing needs increase. Single family homes were the big sellers last month, representing 137 of the total 255 home sales. There was also a noticeable increase in vacant land and commercial sales, reflecting renewed investor confidence. The largest number of home sales (39) were in the $300,000 - $349,999 price range, followed by 35 sales ranging from $400,000 - $499,999. There were 24 sales over the $500,000 mark, including one over $1 million. More listings are needed for the current brisk market conditions – at the end of last month, there were 1,488 active listings on the market. A higher inventory assures a good selection of homes at various price points. March came in like a lion on the local real estate scene! A total of 255 homes sold last month, a 28% increase over the same month last year, and representing almost $81 million in dollar value. What’s the big draw to real estate at this time? A number of factors, according to Chilliwack and District Real Estate (CADREB) President, Travis Heppner. “The economic indicators are looking good right now, so investors are moving forward based on interest rates still being low”. Mr. Heppner added that while affordability is still a big factor in local sales from out of town buyers, he cautions that price increases may be imminent. “Real estate is fueled by supply and demand. When the market is strong, it creates more competition and nudges prices up. However, Chilliwack and area is firmly planted in a balanced market and historically has not experienced big price swings”. Another factor appears to be inter-provincial migration, due to the oil-patch downturn. As more people move back

Cameron jumps from Kermodes to Cascades

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress

Chilliwack native Shayna Cameron graduated from Chilliwack secondary school and went to Quest University in Squamish, becoming a Kermodes basketball legend. Now heading into her final season, Cameron will try her luck at the CIS level. SUBMITTED PHOTO

After four years in Squamish, Chilliwack’s Shayna Cameron is coming home. The five-foot-nine Chilliwack secondary school grad will make the leap from PACWest college basketball to CIS when she suits up for the University of the Fraser Valley womens team this fall. “I’ve always wanted to play at UFV, but I wasn’t ready for it when I first came out of high school,” Cameron said. “I wanted to go somewhere to develop my game, and now that I’ve won back to back provincial championships at the college level, I want to see how I can do at the CIS level.” Cameron, a shooting guard, spent the last four seasons with the Quest Kermodes, helping turn that program into a powerhouse. During her tenure, the Kermodes made the playoffs for the first time in their existence.

Cameron and company won their first provincial title in 2013-14. They went undefeated in PACWest play this year, rolling off 21 straight regular season wins. Then came the second provincial crown. “I think the first one was the sweetest because we’d never accomplished it before and we were so excited,” Cameron said. “We had to fight for every single game that year, which made it even better.” “Looking back it on now, my teammates and I left a legacy there, created history and helped build a program.” Cameron was in the middle of everything as the team’s top player, earning tons of individual accolades. Four times last season she was the PACWest player of the week, and most recently she was named Basketball BC’s Female College Athlete of the Year. She leaves Quest as the Kermodes’ all-time leading scorer. The school is in the process of creating a record book, and her name will be all over it. “It was an amazing experience and Quest really helped me develop as a person and an athlete,” she said. “(Kermodes head coach) Dany Charlery put in so much time with me, and that’s why I’m as good as I am today.” “I don’t play basketball to get those records, and I know someone will come along and break them,”

she continued. “But it might be cool to look back in 10 years and have something good to reminisce about.” Cameron and UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer have had annual conversations about her playing for UFV, every time she comes home for the summer. A graduate of the Junior Cascades program, Cameron holds the Cascade bench boss in high regard, and when she thought she might be ready for the CIS jump she shot him an email. “I had a couple CIS offers and I emailed Al around Christmas time to tell him my situation and ask if there was a spot for me on his team,” she explained. “A lot of coaches wouldn’t want to take a player with just one year of eligibility, but Al knows who I am, he’s seen me develop and he saw me as a fit.” Cameron also drew interest from the University of Northern BC (Prince George) and the University of New Brunswick. UNB was a serious consideration. Proximity to home was obviously a huge draw and another was ease of transition. Though she’s switching schools and teams, Cameron knows many girls she’ll be playing with and against next season. “But the thing that tipped things to me wanting to stay here was Al, and the opportunity to play for such an amazing wellrounded coach,” she

explained. “I would say he’s intense, that’s for sure. He really pushes you to the limit, and that’s what I look for in a coach.” One of Cameron’s former coaches isn’t one bit surprised at what she’s accomplished. Cameron is one of many players Joe Ogmundson has sent on from CSS — a list that includes Sarah and Nicole Wierks, Courtney Bartel, Alexa McCarthy and others. “I could write an entire piece on Shayna, another dedicated (AD) Rundle kid who refused to be defined by anybody but herself,” the Hall of Fame coach said Tuesday. “With a smooth jump shot and deft touch, Shayna showed early that she was a scorer. She is so coachable, so appreciative of help and opportunity and so very deserving of her success.” What Cameron’s done at the college level isn’t guaranteed to transfer to CIS, at least not without some bumps. One thing that seems certain is she’ll give Tuchscherer ever ything she’s got, and be available every night. Not once in her Kermode career did she miss a game. “It takes consistency and working your butt off night in and night out,” she said. “I’m upping my training a bit now and I’ve played against CIS teams in exhibition games and done quite well. And I know Al and the girls will prepare me quite well during the summer and preseason.”

ago. Past tournament champions include fellow Abbotsford products Adam Hadwin (2014 Web.com Tour money list champ, current PGA Tour golfer) and James Lepp (2005 NCAA individual champ, Canadian Tour winner). Nick Taylor, who has a win on the PGA Tour this season, posted a runner-up finish at the UFV tourney in 2012. “It has been wonderful to be involved in an event like this when you get to see the direct results in the young men and good players that the UFV golf program produces,” Stewart said. “The community has been very supportive and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come.” The VGT, now in its ninth season, has proven instrumental in developing local golf talent. Under the guidance of commissioner Fraser Mulholland, the tour has been a springboard for many young pros, with the likes of Hadwin and Taylor advancing all the way to the PGA Tour. “I am really excited about the newly formed partnership with the UFV Cascades golf program and highlighting their fundraising Pro-Am as an official event on the Vancouver Golf Tour,” Mulholland said. “We have been fortunate to witness the development of many great young golfers from the UFV golf program.” Get info online at vancouvergolftour.com and ufvcascades.ca Send spor ts stats, scores and schedules by email to sports@ theprogress.com or call sports editor Eric Welsh at 604702-5572.

FLACK

July 7, 1923 - May 5, 2015 She was so much more than a wife and mother, grandmother and great grandmother, friend and volunteer who gave to each and every one with an unselďŹ sh and loving heart of gold. So many of us she has left behind to share our grief and so very many sweet and treasured memories. Gone to join her lifelong sweetheart.

She saw the beauty within, that many others could not see.
