The Comox Valley School District has become one of the safest districts in the Province, thanks to a joint pilot project with St. John Ambulance. “School District 71 and St John Ambulance committed to working together to give Comox Valley children some very valuable life skills, plus to empower them to know what to do in case of an emergency,” said Christie Kiers, North Island Manager of St. John Ambulance. Since the program began in 2012, more than 2,500 students in Comox Valley have learned first-aid skills. Taught by St. John Ambulance staff, children have acquired a variety of safety skills set to their age level, from the kindergarten Bandaid program, to Grades 8 and 9 becoming certified in CPR with AED. “The Comox Valley School District has taken a proactive stance towards emergency preparedness for many years, and knows full well that personal preparedness and knowledge of first aid are key elements in success at a time of crisis,” said Paul Berry, the district’s principal for health and safety. “As a district, we recognize that in each school, we must stand prepared to look after each other following a major natural disaster. Students trained in first aid will be able to work as part of a team to look after themselves, their friends and potentially their teachers.” The training also comes just in time for National Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week), which seeks to promote emergency preparedness among all Canadians. The Comox Valley School District has clearly recognized first aid as an important part of preparing children for life. “I’m encouraged by the school district’s degree of dedication to bringing first aid into the school curriculum,” said Carol Pilon, St. John Ambulance director of operations for the Interior, Vancouver Island, and Sunshine Coast. “And I call on other school districts to invest in emergency preparedness like Comox Valley has – they’ve really set the bar.”
