Four years old Lachlan Ross was eagerly tipping pails full of fish fry into a protected weir at Douglas Creek of Mount Douglas Park on Friday. His was the first of about 35,000 chum fry that were stocked into the creek. Ross will be seven when the first of the chum return to the creek, though some male cohos which were placed in the creek in January are expected to return as soon as this fall. “It’s quite remarkable when you think about

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF

Lowe’s to replace former Target store at Tillicum Centre

Lowe’s Home Improvement will be taking over the vacant two-storey space left by Target at Tillicum Centre shopping mall. Lowe’s Canada, a home improvement retail chain, announced on Monday it is taking over the leases of 13 vacant Target Canada locations and is buying Target’s distribution centre in Milton, Ont., for approximately $151 million. The acquisitions came out of a real estate auction of Target assets that included purchases by Canadian Tire and Walmart Canada. “Since opening stores in Canada in 2007, we have developed a successful model for providing the Canadian customer with outstanding service and quality products for the home,” said Sylvain Prud‘homme, president of Lowe’s Canada. “These additional locations will accelerate our expansion across the country, enhancing our presence in Western Canada and strengthening our base in Ontario. We are excited to bring Lowe’s to more customers in more communities in Canada, further demonstrating our commitment to this important market.” Lowe’s said the 13 stores will create about 2,000 jobs. Canadian Tire will fill the vacant Target at Hillside Centre after it took on 12 of the Target stores at the same auction. reporter@saanichnews. com

John Bate, left, and Bob Wheaton of the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame hold a sketch of Ken Dobson, the longtime CFAX 1070 sportscaster. The Dobber Classic golf tournament at Cedar Hill Golf Course raises funds for the hall of fame each year.

Dobber Classic reunites old friends Former broadcaster’s invitational tournament at Cedar Hill set for June 5 Travis Paterson News staff

When former CFAX 1070 sportscaster Ken Dobson started an invitational golf tournament, he wanted it to be fun and inexpensive above all else. Twenty-one years later, the Dobber Classic is sticking to Dobson’s vision with its June 5 tournament at the Cedar Hill Golf Course. “Dobson was a devoted communityminded person who supported all the amateur sports groups,” says Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame director John Bate, who chaired the Dobber Classic for 20 years before passing on the role. “If anyone asked, he would show up and speak. He was committed that way.” Ken Dobson (1923 to 1995) was a colourful and much loved sportscaster and sports director at CFAX. After his death, CFAX

initiated the Ken Dobson Athletic Scholarship in his memory for graduating grade 12 students who are active in sports. Before he retired, Bate managed the old Memorial Arena and was the director of Parks and Recreation at the City of Victoria. His family lived in Saanich, two doors down from Dobson’s family. “We got to know Ken quite well and really see what he was about,” Bate says. While the tournament entry price has slowly grown – it’s up to $110 per person – Bate points to the loyalty of the tournament players and the number of goodies that come with each registration including tickets to the Victoria Shamrocks, Victoria Royals and UVic Vikes, among other items. “This is one of our two annual fundraisers and it’s a big deal to us, as our goal is to produce a new display (for the Hall of Fame) at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre each year, usually on that year’s inductees,” he says. “The tournament still a great deal for what you get. You don’t find golf tournaments as fun as this where you come out with as many sponsored gifts for the price.” And the same players keep coming back

d n a e Com ! n u f e join th

each year, Bate adds. Organizers see a return rate of about 85 to 90 per cent from the previous year. “It’s an annual reunion with a core of players who’ve been coming out since it started,” he says. “Even the foursomes are the same, slowly changing one player at a time.” Among the big draws is an impressive sports auction with autographed Vancouver Canucks sticks and Toronto Maple Leafs memorabilia, as well as a prized Jose Bautista bat, signed by the Toronto Blue Jays slugger. It’s safe to say a bat like that would fetch an auction price in the thousands of dollars in Vancouver. “Sometimes we need to remind ourselves there are other perks of being in Victoria. Though, all it takes is two bidders,” Bate says wryly. Registration is open now for the 2015 Dobber Golf Classic. The entry fee includes golf, roast beef buffet dinner and a quality prize for every golfer. To register, visit gvshof.ca or raceonline.ca/ events/details/?id=921. reporter@saanichnews.com

Regional study poses few risks Continued from Page A1

Coun. Fred Haynes, who planned to second Plant’s motion, said participating in a province-led study on the benefits and risks of amalgamation will provide “another set of data” for reference with the municipality’s own review. “We still don’t know if amalgamation is the answer, but we have to have a conversation about what problems we’d like to solve,” Haynes said. “If there’s no cost to us to participate, why would we back away from another discussion of this that includes our regional partners?” Haynes said there are legitimate concerns about the real benefits and cost savings of amalgamation, but the purpose of a province-led study is to sort out these concerns. Look for updates to this story in Friday’s edition of Saanich News.

Second vote required by law The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development told the News in 2013 that any municipal amalgamation would require a public vote from affected residents. At that time, voters would be provided with the details of what a proposed government structure would look like. “If the municipal councils involved agreed that there was enough public support of amalgamation, they could request the Minister to order a restructure vote in each of the municipalities that participated in the process,” a ministry spokesperson said. “In order for amalgamation to take place, the vote would have to be successful in each municipality.” editor@saanichnews.com

Victoria man arrested after clothing store break-in Saanich police officers used a K9 unit to trace a break-and-enter suspect from the scene of the crime Friday morning. Just before 2:30 a.m, police responded to an intrusion alarm at a commercial business located in the 3200-block of Oak St. in Saanich. Saanich Police dog Zeke and his handler, Const. Zielinski, traced a scent from the scene and found a man hiding within a large gargen area in the same block. A 49-year-old Victoria resident was taken into custody without incident and about $800 in merchandise, which consisted mostly of clothing, was recovered.

OUR VIEW

Distracted driving needs to stop Seems like a lot of motorists just don’t get it. They continue to use their phone while driving. Police in Saanich and across the Capital Region continue to catch people using their phones while driving in great numbers. There is no reason for this. The technology exists so calls can be made or taken, hands free. And yet, the problem continues. Distracted driving is now the second-leading cause of car crashes in the province, police say, and contributes to 88 deaths annually. That’s roughly 28 per cent of all car crash fatalities in B.C. Making matters worse is that since distracted driving legislation was passed, some drivers have migrated their cellphones from their driving wheel at eye level to their legs. The result is even less eye contact on or towards the road in front of the vehicle. Efforts to curb the carnage have resulted in stiffer fines, and aggressive policing campaign. If you are caught using a hand-held device while driving (or even at a red light or stuck in traffic) you’ll pay $167, and earn three penalty points against your licence. New drivers, or those with a learner’s licence, are prohibited from using any electronic device – even hands free. But the rules run even deeper than that. Workers who are injured in an accident caused by their distracted driving may not be entitled to compensation. And employers who encourage, or turn a blind eye to distracted driving may be found at fault by WorkSafe BC. The rules are clear, but it will take more than stiff penalties and rigorous enforcement to change behaviour. We need an attitude adjustment. This is an issue about safety – ours and those around us. Smart phones are amazing devices, capable of amazing things. But too many people are discovering they also have the potential to cause great harm. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. All letters must have a name and a telephone number for verification.

Get smarter on tax spending Re: Be taxed or expect less, Opinion (May 6) I don’t think the average person really objects to taxes or even that they sometimes have to go up. I know I don’t. What people object to, and are totally fed up with, is the incredibly stupid and irresponsible politicians that continually waste our tax dollars on pet projects and other things that the money should not be spent on. We have roads in Greater Victoria that are almost undrivable yet they keep pouring money into “traffic calming” and “gardens” on these roads. The waste is ridiculous! Federally and provincially, we have citizens that can’t get by and programs that are being cut, but the government continues to send millions of our tax dollars to other countries so they can look good in the eyes of other politicians. We need to take care of our own people first. If politicians would spend our tax dollars on things that really matter

to us and that we really need, their spending might not be criticized as much. They seem to think that because we elected them, that gives them the right to spend our money on what they want. Wrong! Larry Zilinsky Saanich

system is abysmal, not one that we should be proud of. My daughter in Germany has immediately seen her GP, then a specialist, and had an MRI for a back problem within an afternoon – isn’t that how an efficient system works? Roger Love Saanich

Healthcare system not a point of pride

Beautiful moments are appreciated

Re: Be taxed or expect less, Opinion (May 6) You suggest in this editorial that we should be proud of our health care system. That is, surely, inappropriate when we are rated No. 30 by the World Health Organization and No. 10 of 11 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries by the Commonwealth Fund. If we stop just comparing ourselves against the U.S. and look at successful health care systems – that all seem to offer public and private mixtures – we see that our

SAANICH NEWS -- Wednesday, Wednesday, May May 13, 13, 2015 2015

LETTERS

Is the Orange Tsunami headed West? Albertans have always laughed about their long-standing reputation as a reckless, immature society. The classic bumper sticker, now available as a T-shirt or coffee cup in several variations, states: “Please God, give us one more oil boom, we promise not to p--- it away this time.” Now they’ve thrown out the government that finally tried to stop blowing money like a roughneck fresh out of the bush. Jim Prentice had the gall to propose raising income taxes for high wage earners, doing away with former Alberta treasurer Stockwell Day’s signature flat tax. In response, voters have abruptly replaced the 44-year Progressive Conservative dynasty with an upstart NDP that wants to tax the rich and corporations even more. Facing an oil slump, layoffs and a huge structural deficit in Alberta’s lavish public service, NDP premier-elect Rachel Notley is committed to a 50-per-cent increase in the minimum wage and another “review” of resource royalties. One headline in a national paper summed it up: “Go home, Alberta. You’re drunk.” In the sober days after the election, a few truths emerge. Alberta hasn’t been a fiscally conservative, smallgovernment place for a long time. Among other things, it has ratcheted up teacher

and nurse wages across the country. Alberta is broke, again, and even the NDP is afraid to resort to a sales tax.

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

The minimum wage hike is a pet policy of Canada’s labour federations, which somehow remain convinced that poverty can be eliminated by state order. On the positive side, Notley has promised to end corporate and union donations to political parties, as has already been done federally. B.C. should be next, but the gravy train of business donations is too tempting for our nominally Liberal government. Here at the B.C. legislature, an NDP staffer passed out cans of Orange Crush to celebrate. NDP leader John Horgan pronounced himself “ecstatic,” and hastened to assure reporters that Notley is “as competent as she sounds.” Notley now has to sort through a caucus that includes typical NDP placeholders, college

students and union staff running in fainthope constituencies. Soon after the result, the party pulled down its website platform and candidate biographies, as Notley began phoning energy companies to reassure them Alberta will be “A-OK” on her watch. Horgan likes to describe the “capital flight” from new NDP governments as if it’s just a show put on by big business. Plummeting stock prices and relocation of corporate offices are all staged, according to the party line, nothing to do with actual investment conditions created by NDP policies.

This fiction is all Horgan dares to say publicly, because it’s what his party base devoutly believes. Besides, they’re only branch offices of multinational oil companies like Shell, Horgan said. He used his favourite Tommy Douglas quote, about the bad news of a big oil company leaving: “The good news is, the oil is staying here.” B.C.’s natural gas might be staying here too. Horgan insists he supports a natural gas export industry, but his party seems more concerned with an ascending Green Party, and an urban base that believes you can run a resource economy

on windmills and solar panels. Notley supports twinning the TransMountain pipeline, while Horgan continues to insist he has no opinion on the project Adrian Dix so memorably opposed. The Alberta NDP has a steep learning curve ahead. The B.C. NDP has a couple of years to see if the appearance of a like-minded Alberta government is a boost for them, or a cautionary tale for voters. ... Detective duckling Eleven ducklings were rescued from a storm drain along the Trans-Canada Highway on Sunday evening by some persistent Saanich Police officers, including Const. Peter Wong, right, who let one of the rescues sit on his laptop while he filed a report. The ducklings had slipped through the storm drain’s metal grate and their mother’s panicked behaviour caused passing motorists to call police. The ducklings were transported to a local veterinarian hospital and then to the B.C. SPCA’s Wild ARC recovery centre in Metchosin, where they’re expected to make a full recovery. Unfortunately, the mother was struck by a passing motorist while police were tending to her young and did not survive. Photos courtesy of Saanich Police Department

The Victoria General Hospital Auxiliary is donating $12,388 for a new stretcher at Victoria General Hospital. The stretcher will be used for transporting and assessing patients in emergency and trauma care at VGH. “The transport stretcher is easily adjustable for providing medical assessment and treatment like CPR,” said Dr. Brian Farrell, site chief for emergency medicine at VGH. “The emergency department

treats almost 60,000 patients a year, and the ability to transport them quickly and safely is essential to providing the highest levels of patient care.” Victoria General Hospital Auxiliary is a charitable society of members who run the gift shop and organize various fundraising initiatives for equipment purchases at VGH. Over the last two years, the auxiliary has supported the Victoria Hospitals Foundation through Poinsettias4Patients, a

Christmas plant sale campaign which has raised $20,000. “We are a diverse group of women and men dedicated to supporting our hospital through community service and volunteer work,” said Valerie Smith, president of the auxiliary. “We are so happy being able to work with the Victoria Hospitals Foundation to support this new equipment, and we hope it will make a big difference for patients in the emergency department.”

Alpine plants reveal ‘a puzzling gap’ Biologists collect vital information from unnamed B.C. mountains

Each summer, Royal B.C. Museum biologists make collections to understand the distribution of plants and animals in British Columbia. These field collections contribute to the knowledge needed to provide sustainable stewardship of the remarkable plants and animals with whom we share B.C. distributions vary over time, usually in response to changes in climate. For example, we know that tundra occurred as far south as Arizona and as recently as the end of the Pleistocene 13,000 years ago. During cold periods of the Ice Age, these species may have spread widely when tundra-like habitats occurred at lower elevations than currently. Tundra zones were certainly disrupted and even obliterated by expanding continental ice sheets. Following the end of the most recent ice advance, more tundra habitat was lost with warming climate and expansion of forests and deserts. This second explanation doesn’t fully explain why these species do not occur in southern B.C., an area from which there is a more thorough, though still incomplete, record of plant distributions. There is much more to learn about the flora of British Columbia and to do so we intend to visit those regions that have been poorly collected and expect to continue to make new discoveries. To put this work in a modern perspective, past changing geographic patterns show how important climate is in shaping the distribution of plants and animals. At this time of global climatic change we are likely entering a major re-organization of the distribution of plants on the globe. ••• Kendrick Marr is curator of botany and Richard Hebda is curator of botany and earth history at the Royal B.C. uring the 20 years Morgan Dhanowa spent working as a public health nurse, she saw many clients struggling with low self-esteem and depression. These clients felt frustrated and trapped by their circumstances. Providing additional resources didn’t always help as they didn’t address their underlying beliefs about themselves and their abilities. Dhanowa sensed there was more she could be doing to help people overcome negative self-talk and behavioural patterns. “We can spend a lot of time trying to motivate ourselves by being harsh and critical of ourselves. Our internal negative messages can be quite relentless and yet we remain stuck,” says Dhanowa, who left nursing in 2011 to create her private practice Inner Vision Hypnotherapy. The good news about all these negative thought patterns is that they can be changed by learning new ways of thinking. “We can refocus our thoughts on those that are that are kinder to ourselves,” she says. As an accredited Clinical Counselling-Hypnotherapist, Dhanowa spends her days working in both downtown Victoria and Brentwood Bay offices, helping clients change their old patterns and grow into the people they love. Hypnotherapy is an opportunity to learn skills and techniques not only for the issues that are presently bothering us, but also for issues that arise in the future as we continues to grow and change, Dhanowa says.

“These changes in thinking are reflected deeper into how we actually feel about ourselves, and how we feel inside is critical to how we take care of ourselves,” she says. Dhanowa has trained in past life therapy under Brian Weiss at the Wiess Institute. She is also a member of the Newton Institute, which teaches techniques developed by Dr. Michael Newton through his books Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls. “For some people, a few tweaks in what is already working allows them to easily incorporate new changes into their lifestyles,” Dhanowa says. “Others who have had many challenges may feel disconnected from themselves and their world. Deeper work can allow them to recognize they are in control of their lives and choices, and from here they can move forward into healthier patterns.” For more information, visit innervisionhypnotherapy.ca or call 250-5807656.

Rose Chisholm, left, poses with Canadian Parents for French B.C.-Yukon President Patti Holm. Chisholm, a Grade 7 Early Immersion student at École Bayside Middle School, was the first-place winner at the organization’s pan-provincial French public speaking competition, held in Surrey on May 2.

Bayside students take top honours at panprovincial competition Three students from Saanich’s École Bayside Middle School earned top-three awards at this year’s pan-provincial French public speaking competition, Concours d’art oratoire, organized by the Canadian Parents for French. Rose Chisholm, a Grade 7 student, won first place for her monologue, “Les rêves” at the May 2 event in Surrey. Carlos Quintero won second at the Grade 8 level for his speech “La penicilline,” and Edouard Arthur was third among Grade 6 students with his dialogue on Apollo 11. “It’s an incredible feat to make it to the provincial finals – taking home a medal is a real achievement,” said Concours d’art oratoire chief judge, Dr. Renée Hamilton-Clark. Three more students qualified for provincials from Bayside, Grade 6 student Lucy Kendrick with “Les Beatles, Grade 8 student Nathalie Veronneau with “La forme physique,” and Grade 7 student Matteo Hilton for “La physiologie du sport.” Student participants choose a subject they are interested in and present it however they’d like in a three- to five-minute speech in French. There were 240 students who qualified to compete at provincials from Grade 6 to 12. reporter@saanichnews.com

It’s a fresh take on a timeless classic. That is what audiences can expect from the latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tale of Macbeth on now at the Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre. Macbeth is the tragic tale of a Scottish general who receives a prophecy from three weird sisters that one day he will become the king of Scotland. He becomes consumed by his ambition and desire and jumps into action to take the throne for himself. Traditionally, the play involves more than 40 characters. But director Brian Richmond has adapted the tale to be told from the perspective of the three weird sisters rather than its traditional form and involves six speaking and four non-speaking actors. “The play was originally written with nearly 40 characters so it’s taking a huge show and putting it into a format where six actors can perform it. Primarily, the bulk of the show goes to the three weird sisters,” said Richmond, noting that the Roxy Theatre can accommodate roughly 10 actors on stage at a time. “It’s going to be a very visually intriguing production. We’ve also put it into a timeless environment . . . and the original score is very contemporary. It’s this interesting meld of old and new that we’re attempting to accomplish,” said Richmond, who grew up in Saanich. Local actor Celine Stubel, who plays Lady Macbeth, Hecate and murderer three, said working on a smaller production reminds actors of what it takes to put on a show. “There’s a real feeling that we’re all doing this together and that’s apparent in the staging of it,” said Stubel, who is acting in her first production of Macbeth. “We’re so reliant on each other, helping each other change and handing each other props just at the right time.” Richmond’s version of the play, which is rooted in the 11th century (the time in which the historical Macbeth was believed to take place), focuses on the traditional political allegory and the role of women in society. “Another more interesting allegory is that women need to not be seen in a dehumanized context,” said Richmond. “King James I was really a big advocate for witchcraft and that diminishes the role of women in society and Shakespeare was being critical of that.” Macbeth runs until May 17 at the Blue Bridge Theatre (2657 Quadra St). Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticket Rocket at 250-590-6291 or ticketrocket.org.

QUARTERLY REPORT

Dominion Lending Centres Chief Economist Says US Style Housing Crash Unlikely in Canada Responding to recent news reports about the IMF warning of an overheated Canadian housing market, the Chief Economist for Dominion Lending Centres, Sherry Cooper, says the prospect of a soft landing is good news for homeowners, “there is no doubt that letting some steam out of the boiling markets is a good thing because were prices to rise rapidly for too long, a nasty correction would be likely.”

Bank of Canada Remains On Hold With Hopes of Economic Rebound As was widely expected, on Wednesday April 15, 2015 The Bank of Canada announced that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at 3/4 per cent. The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1 per cent and the deposit rate is 1/2 per cent. Core inflation, at 2 percent, is a reflection of the dampening effects of a slowing economy offset by the pass through effects of the lower dollar.

Dr. Sherry Cooper

in the January MPR); however, the second quarter is expected to see a rebound to 1.8 percent growth, revised up from earlier expectation. The Bank continues to assert that, “Underneath the effects of the oil price shock, the natural sequence of stronger non-energy exports, increasing investment, and improving labour markets is progressing.” This will be aided by an improvement in the U.S. economy and the easing in financial conditions.

Chief Economist for The Bank is hopeful Dominion Lending Centres that global growth will strengthen in coming months to 3-1/2 percent—consistent There remains a good deal of uncertainty with their forecast in January’s Monetary in this sequence: While March Policy Report (MPR)—as a direct result employment in Canada improved of central bank rate cuts and quantitative substantially, business investment easing in Europe. Lower commodity remains disappointing, manufacturing is prices will boost growth in some weak—especially in the auto sector—and countries. The Bank also believes that the improvement in trade has been less strong growth will resume in the United than expected. States after a weak first quarter, which, of Real GDP growth is projected to rebound course, has yet to be confirmed. in the second quarter and subsequently First quarter growth in Canada has been strengthen to average about 2 1/2 per revised downward to 0.0 percent in the cent on a quarterly basis until the middle April MPR (from 1.5 percent growth of 2016. The Bank expects real GDP

growth of 1.9 per cent in 2015, 2.5 per cent in 2016, and 2.0 per cent in 2017. The Bank also believes the risks to the outlook are balanced, an upgrade since the last policy meeting in March. As a result of this view, they judge that the current degree of monetary stimulus is appropriate and have left rates unchanged. I am cautiously optimistic that the Bank has got it right, but I continue to believe that the risks are on the downside for the economy and inflation. My forecast for Canadian growth this year is 1.5 percent-below the Bank’s 1.9 percent forecast. Much hinges on the U.S. economy. The April MPR revised down its U.S. growth forecast for this year from 3.2 percent to 2.7 percent.

Cooper, one of North America’s most respected economic experts, points out that existing home sales were down 2 percent year-over-year in January, but were still up moderately outside of Alberta. Later data suggests that in February, sales rose month-over-month as gains in Toronto and Vancouver offset faltering markets in other parts of the country. More recently, Sales of existing homes in Canada rose in March from February, led by gains in the big Toronto and Vancouver markets. Sales were even up in Calgary where sales had slowed in recent months in the wake of the oil price decline. “With home ownership at a record high of 70 percent of households and interest rates at record lows, national sales growth will stabilize at a modest pace,” says Cooper. “However, steady demand from immigrants and non-resident purchasers in Toronto and Vancouver should continue to support housing markets. In addition, Millennials are in their first-time homebuying years. While many might be priced out of the single-family home market, many will take the plunge into condos.” On the supply side, housing starts and completions are down and are now trending slightly above household formation rates. Taking replacement demand into consideration, the current pace of overall home construction is at appropriate levels to meet long-run demand. We have also seen evidence of a recent increase in dedicated rental housing construction as institutional investors are providing increased funding in this long-overlooked area of the housing market. Condos have effectively replaced traditional apartment units and are an affordable alternative for those who are priced out of Toronto’s detached housing market. Rental vacancy rates remain at extreme lows in Vancouver and Toronto. Cooper says the bottom line is that there is little evidence of an upcoming U.S.-style housing crash anywhere in Canada, even in the hardest hit energycentered markets.

Graffiti clean-up crew About a dozen volunteers from the Quadra-Cedar Hill Community Association joined forces with the Saanich Police Department last Saturday for a graffiti clean-up event in their neighbourhood. The teams started in Playfair Park and fanned out to tag-ridden areas along major roadways. Saanich Police Chief Bob Downie, Coun. Fred Haynes, Quadra Cedar Hill Community Association President John Schmuck and graffiti program co-ordinator Const. Mike Pamminger also attended the event. More than 100 utility poles and 250 tags were cleaned up, said Pamminger, who hopes to organize similar clean-ups with other community associations in the future. Cloverdale Paint and the City of Victoria generously provided materials for the clean-up, Pamminger said.

Saanich’s Nic Renyard was named the CJHL’s top goaltender for his outstanding season with the Okotoks Oilers.

Nic Renyard’s story of redemption is complete. On Friday (May 8), the Saanich-raised goalie, who was released from the Victoria Grizzlies at the outset of the 201415 season, was named the top junior A goalie in Canada. Renyard not only captured the Alberta Junior Hockey League MVP and top goaltender award as a member of the Okotoks Oilers, he was one of five finalists for the Canadian Junior A Hockey League MVP award, winning the CJHL top goalie. “(Okotoks is) a really awesome group of guys, the coaches had confidence in me and they

gave me an opportunity to play, which is all I needed. I’m really lucky,” he told Hockey Canada. The 20-year-old Reynolds secondary graduate is committed to the University of Massachusetts Minutemen for the 2015-16 NCAA Hockey East Div. 1 season. With the Oilers, Renyard won a league-high 30 games to go along with eight losses and three ties, and shared the AJHL’s best save percentage of .924, while posting a 2.19 goals against average with the Oilers. His five shutouts set a new franchise record. The season began with Renyard going 12-0-1 in his first 13 starts. He racked up five game first star honours and was player of the month in October. The Oilers finished third in the AJHL’s

South Division in the regular season and made it to the second playoff round before getting swept 4-0 by the Brooks Bandits. Prior to Jr. A Renyard played for the major midget South Island Royals (Thunderbirds) and was backup in Penticton to Vees’ netminder Chad Katunar, also of Victoria. That team won the 2012 RBC Championship, but the following year they traded Renyard. He ended up in Victoria, but was traded again. “I never considered quitting, not even for a second. I was going to find a way – there’s no way I was giving up.” Former Saanich Brave Cole Golka was an honourable mention for CJHL MVP of the year. reporter@saanichnews.com

Achieving perfection in yoga Local woman earns international distinction in ashtanga yoga

321-3980 Shelbourne St. Victoria 250.477.7234

Harmony Lichty in the vrschikasana “scorpion pose” at the Ashtanga Yoga Studio.

Kendra Wong Black Press

For Victoria’s Harmony Lichty, the phrase practice makes perfect is one she lives by. Over the past decade, Lichty has travelled to South Asia a dozen times to study ashtanga yoga from Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who started the original practice in Mysore, India in 1948. Ashtanga yoga is a specific discipline that encompasses a series of complex postures, internal selfpractices such as cleanliness, telling the truth and living a moderate lifestyle, concentration, meditation and breathing control. Certification is only awarded to students who have studied under Jois or his grandson for more than 10 years and have mastered the highest series. After 11 years of studying yoga and making fundamental lifestyle changes, Lichty has become the first woman in Victoria (there are only 17 women and 30 men in the world) to earn her certification in ashtanga yoga.

It has become a way of life for Lichty and her husband Jeff, who practice six days of the week. “It helps me to feel good in my day. It helps me mentally to feel more balanced and I feel more happy on the days that I’m practicing compared to the days that I don’t,” she said. “It’s very healthy. My body feels good — it’s strong and flexible.” Lichty’s journey to become a certified ashtanga yoga instructor began in 2004 with her first trip to India to study under Jois. Students practice at 3:45 a.m. for several hours, learning new postures and in the afternoon move on to classes such as cooking, art, sitar playing or learning sanskrit. “It’s a pretty big commitment to go to India and spend a good amount of time there. Your whole life has to revolve around saving up for that and the priority to go there and do that,” said Lichty. It is a three- to four-month-long trip she has become familiar with, having travelled to India for 12 years with the exception of 2001 when her son was born. “She’s able to put her mind to a task and goal and complete it no matter what,” said Jeff of Harmony’s certification. “That’s a good skill to be able to understand a goal, put your mind to it and complete the goal.” According to Lichty, it is not just the ability to complete complex postures, but it is a self-realization and dedication that has been the key to her success in the practice. “That’s when yoga starts to change people’s lives because they’re committed to themselves and to a daily discipline and a teacher,” she said. Lichty and her husband now run an ashtanga yoga studio (203-560 Johnson St.). For more info, visit ashtanga-yoga-victoria.com.

The Velox Valkyries used a dominating first half to win the Gordon Harris trophy as B.C. Rugby Union premier women’s champions, defeating Burnaby Lake RFC 36-12 on Saturday (May 9). It’s the Valkyries first premier women’s B.C. title since 2012 and it’s also the last time a Velox team played as a Saanich-based club as the organization prepares for next season at their new clubhouse in the lower park of the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre in Colwood. “We came out strong and controlled large parts of the first half going into the break going up 29-7, but the second half was a different game,” said Valkryies head coach Rob Nichol. Burnaby played to their strengths in the second frame, a power forward game that gave Velox fits in their end of the field, Nichol said. “Full credit to Burnaby, we were pressed and ended up getting penalized for repeated infringements, marginal offsides, entering the side of the ruck, a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, that kind of thing, and it led to Burnaby getting a penalized try.” Despite being up 29-7, Velox was holding on until national team player Brittany Waters scored a late try to seal it for Velox. “Even myself, I was feeling tense at one point and had to remind myself we were three scores up,” Nichol said. “You have to remember the game can turn in a matter of a few minutes.” Scoring for Velox was Meaghan Howat with two tries, Waters with two and Amanda Thornborough with one. Randi Hunter converted two tries, with Waters converting one as well. The core of Valkyries included players from the team’s last championship including national player Barbara Mervin and provincial player Marlene Donaldson. Mervin, Waters and Thornborough filled Velox’s quota limit of three national players, making for tough decisions as the club has other national players in the program. The future of premier women’s rugby is strong on the South Island as the Castaway Wanderers are in the process of creating a senior women’s team, though they’re yet unsure if it will be ready for September, or what level it will be at, said David Crossley.
