LET IT GO — About 1,000 juvenile white sturgeon were released into the Kootenay River on May 6, including about 300 in a public event at the former

West Creston ferry landing (above); the others were released by schoolchildren in the morning. The annual release, co-ordinated by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program has been going on since 1999, with a goal of helping to repopulate the endangered species. Out of every 1,000 released, 280 will survive two years, 220 will survive five and 190 will survive eight. After 12 years, about 180 are still alive. Twenty-one-year-old Elisha Jimmy of Creston faces a charge of arson causing bodily harm as a result of an RCMP and Creston Fire Rescue investigation into an apartment fire on April 30. Jimmy was to remain in custody until a scheduled court appearance yesterday, according to an RCMP spokesperson. A young Creston man, Ross Millar, remains in critical condition in Vancouver General Hospital. A report on GoFundMe. com, a fundraising website, states that Millar underwent a seven-hour skin graft operation on May 7.

Creston firefighters responded to an alarm in the early hours of April 30, where they found an 18th Avenue South building partially in flames. Four other apartment dwellers were evacuated safely but a severely burned Millar, whose apartment appears to be have been where the fire started, had to be rescued by firefighters. He was initially treated at Creston Valley Hospital and later airlifted to Vancouver with life-threatening injuries. Following an intensive investigation by RCMP Creston and Kelowna’s South East District, as well as Creston Fire Rescue, Jimmy was identified as “a person of interest”, according to RCMP, and arrested on May 4.

he Creston Valley’s first Business Walks event will take place May 25. The walk aims to take the pulse of downtown by connecting face to face with businesses. Volunteer teams will be going door-todoor from 9:30 a.m.-

noon and 1-4 p.m. in the downtown area. The Business Walks program involves a partnership facilitated by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training (JTST), the Town of Creston and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce, and local service providers. Volunteer walkers (teams of business, civic leaders and business support service providers) will go from business to business asking owners or managers a couple of simple questions about their business. Businesses that need assistance will receive followup visits and will be provided one-on-one support. Business Walks is recognized as an economic development best practice by the provincial government. Gathering community and business information is a key ingredient to foster the area’s economic growth and expansion potential. Business owners and managers are encouraged to be at their business on May 25 when the teams are engaged in Business Walks. By taking the time to answer just a few questions, you will be providing valuable information that area support agencies can use to develop programs and services that will better support small businesses. MS Society volunteer earns President’s Award For 40 years, Ken Chubb has lived with multiple sclerosis, the chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system, which affects about 100,000 Canadians. And for most of that time, Chubb has been an active volunteer with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, offering support and advocacy — and his dedication and commitment were recognized when he received the BC and Yukon Division’s President’s Award last week. “My life is a life of service,” he said. “It’s not for accolades. This is just who I am.” There was a time when that life of service was unimaginable — the 63-year-old was diagnosed in his early 20s, when a severe attack put him in the hospital for more than five months. “I was really, really sick,” he said. “The MS symptoms came on so quick, they didn’t expect I was going to live.” When he was released, he went to work with his brother in his parents’ dry-cleaning business, which wasn’t ideal for someone dealing with the disease. “The heat of the laundry made it difficult to cope with,” he said. When his parents sold the business, Chubb went to university, earning a bachelor’s degree in social work. He worked at a group home when institutions for the mentally disabled people were first closed, and later began working for Child Protective Services

until his retirement in 2000. Chubb was involved with Kelowna’s MS Society chapter for 12 years. He and his wife, Suzanne, moved to Creston in the late 1980s, and he got involved with the Creston support group in 1988. He was a board member of the BC and Yukon Division for a number of years, and is currently a member of the division’s client services committee, as well as one of the main contacts for the Creston support group. “Ken has been instrumental in connecting clients with the MS Society to assist with advocacy, support and information, as well as to assist with the navigation of the health care system and access to the MS clinic for diagnosis,” says the BC and Yukon Division newsletter. “Ken has liaised with the client services staff, helping to identify local challenges, gaps and problems with health care services, as well as assisting in making connections between local health care providers and the MS Society to facilitate more collaborative care for those living with MS in the Creston area.” Including spouses and children, there are about 50 members in Creston support group. Those connections are important for everyone involved. “You’re dealing with a major loss,” said Chubb. “You’re losing your health and the things that go with it. … It’s generally a downward slide. But you make the choice to keep going with the support of family and friends.” Chubb can’t stress enough his gratitude for his family’s

support, with his wife, two children and grandchildren always ready to help however they are able. Although he hasn’t had an attack as severe as the first one, Chubb now deals mainly with mobility and balance issues, and he’s had optic neuritis — a temporary blindness — a few times. But none of that has lessened his passion for supporting others in similar situations. “I wish I had more time and energy,” he said. “I would like to spend more time doing home visits.” Personal contact and support are important, and the Creston group is always interested in extra help. “Doctors don’t have time to do anything but medical stuff,” Chubb said. “We’re always trying to recruit healthy volunteers that are focused on the cause of the MS Society, which provides support for people living with MS.” For Chubb, that volunteer work has given him a greater purpose than simply managing his own health — he harks back to a college term, “self-actualized”, to describe how he feels. “It’s an awesome bonus to feel that way,” he said. “I don’t go to bed at night wondering what to do the next day.” And he’s happy to keep on helping others — all the while humbly downplaying his award. “I feel very honoured,” he said. “It’s an honour to be able to serve. … “I truly have found myself.” For more information on the Creston support group, contact Ken Chubb at 250-428-7737 or Barb West at 250-428-2882.

Martial arts convention running for third year BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

For a third year, the Deep Water Martial Arts Convention and Tournament is being hosted in Creston, bringing dozens of students and masters to town. Running Friday to Sunday this weekend at the Creston and District Community Complex and open to the public, Deep Water offers a chance for education in a

wide range of martial arts-related areas. “The idea is that martial arts is a lifestyle rather than kicking and punching people — I feel that people get too caught up in the kicking and punching,” said Neil Ripski, Red Jade Martial Arts founder and Kootenay Chin Woo Martial Arts Association board member, both of which sponsor the convention. masters will attend the convention, along with about 70 students from schools in Nelson, and Lethbridge, Red Deer and Edmonton, Alta. Workshops include Chinese medicine — discussions of basic Chinese meridian theory (Friday) and Chinese medicine in everyday life (Sunday) — swords, ninjitsu and more. An opening ceremony followed by a tournament is the event’s official kickoff at 9 a.m. Saturday; all of the events take place at the rec centre, except for an evening tea with the masters, which runs Saturday at the Snoring Sasquatch. One of the discussions Ripski will lead deals with drunken boxing; the Creston Valley resident is one of only a few teachers in the world. Last year, he spent a week teaching in Israel, and he recently visited Rome to teach at Heaven Fight Arena, where he was visited by students from Israel, Switzerland, Britain and Italy.

It was an intense week, with Ripski cramming as much as he could into five eight-hour days. “I just pushed it on them to see how much they could handle,” he said. “It was like going to your grandma’s house and she keeps telling you to eat.”

issues such as land use and development, environmental management, heritage and culture, and transportation. It provides direction for growth and change.

“The idea is that martial arts is a lifestyle rather than kicking and punching people.” Neil Ripski

As with his previous teaching trip, Ripski made sure he had time to see the sights, visiting the Vatican (where he accidentally followed the wrong group and nearly ended up at the papal residence before police caught up with

him) and filming martial arts videos in the Coliseum and Roman Forum (where police chased him out while filming after sunset). In Rome, Ripski stayed near a church that was the last architectural work of Michelangelo, and was amazed to see fountains in the city that were still served by ancient aqueducts. “You can’t go five minutes without seeing one that’s been trickling water for two thousand years,” he said. He even had the opportunity to use his martial arts training when a man came up to him, shook his hand and whispered in his ear — the man’s hand was already in Ripski’s backpack as he did so. Rispki defended himself by twisting the man’s wrist. “It’s a move that I never use and thought was stupid when I learned it,” he said with a laugh. Out with the old

When we were in Calgary a few weekends ago, I joked with some family members that I wanted to be there on the morning following the provincial election to see if the sun would come up if an NDP government was elected. Even at that late date no one seemed to take the possibility very seriously. It seems hard to believe that it was 44 years ago that the Progressive Conservative Party was trying to pull off a similar upset, hoping to form a new government after more than three decades of Social Credit rule. I was 17 and totally immersed in the campaign. Too young to vote but already an old at hand at election volunteering. I had worked on a federal campaign at 14 and as a 16-year-old was the youngest PC constituency director in the province. The election campaign in 1971 was exciting to work on. Peter Lougheed and a youngish group of bright lights had already made waves in the previous election with an enthusiastic and positive approach to wooing voters. Door-todoor campaigning, not common at the time, really got the attention of the public. In that election I had seen PC candidate Len Werry out going door to door, wearing running shoes, and it made a deep impression. It was enough to push me to make a cocky bet with my math teacher that Werry would unseat the incumbent and much older Socred in our riding. Much to his chagrin, he had to pay up, which he did by tossing my dime winnings across the classroom to me. In ’71 there was a cardinal rule in the PC party. No criticizing the Socreds. Instead Lougheed and his team put together a series of propos-

als that illustrated how they would govern and, in the end, the public believed them. It seemed like a miracle when a government that had been in power since long before I was born was toppled. That shift couldn’t be described as being nearly as dramatic as the

Lorne Eckersley one that happened last week, though. With Sarah Notley somehow elbowing out room in the centre of the political spectrum, she came across as articulate, passionate, thoughtful and not at all frightening. Here was an NDP leader that didn’t seem radical or anti-business, but who could be trusted to rid the province of the accumulated odor many long-lived governments emit. Much like old shoes, the Alberta PCs’ tongues were still fine but their soles had long since worn through. In retrospect, I suppose it has been too easy to paint Alberta as a right wing province, given the long track record of electing conservatives candidates. But Calgary’s choice of Naheed Nenshi should have been an indicator that Alberta has changed significantly, getting younger and decidedly more international in flavour as the long boom in gas and oil attracted professionals from around the world. It is this change in demographics, I think, that fos-

tered an increased sense of disgust with the status quo, first as Premier Alison Redford went all North Korean in her love of government perks, and then with ultra-corporate friendly Jim Dinning cynically calling an election for no better reason than his party was looking good in the polls. What had long since been clear to many living outside Alberta, the ruling party’s government was simply fresh out of ideas. And when Dinning welcomed the Wildrose Allliance Party’s group of opportunistic turncoats into the PC caucus a year earlier the message was clear — “Nothing new to see here, folks. We do whatever is good for us and damn the rest of you.” Now, unless Notley turns out to be the second coming of Nenshi, I can’t imagine that the NDP will be at the helm for anywhere near as long as the PCs or Socreds were. The pressures from the business sector, and oil and gas particularly, will be enormous. But if this election does nothing else, it could break the fear of change rut that the province has been in for most of its history. Albertans might sneer at our B.C. politics, but we do have a better record of taking chances and having a shorter stock of patience, which is a good thing, in my opinion. This result also breathes hope that a new, more worldly generation — and many, many more women — might be ready to inject new life into a province that hasn’t done particularly well in capitalizing on its resource wealth. Practice helps to bear the unbearable Soon after we start a regular meditation practice, we realize we are stuck in patterns. We suddenly become aware that things aren’t solid. They just slip away. At this point, mountains are mountains, in the narrow way. Then as

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague our idea of a solid self stumbles until there is nobody there, mountains are not mountains any longer; rivers are not rivers. There is nothing to hang on to. We have realized a deep truth about absolute reality. This experience is both terrifying and freeing. When we re-enter daily life, mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers once more. This coming back to ordinariness, this knowing that you can’t hang on to ordinariness, brings awareness that our lives aren’t ordinary at all. We begin to cultivate the realization of completion in every moment.

I’ve talked to many whose experience of life threatening illness has awakened them. It seems like we have to go through a horrible experience to find out that who we thought we are, we aren’t, and that who we want to hang on to, we can’t. And then this ordinariness has a whole different quality. When cultivating practice of ordinariness, although it is not as unconscious as it was before practice, delusion still comes up: grasping, judgment, competition. For Zen master Eihei Dogen, the 13th century founder of Soto Zen in Japan, it is sitting meditation that brings awareness that delusive thought is coming up, and that we are not it. With practice, human foibles still arise, but we know what they are so we no longer identify with them, grasp after them and insist on them. You recognize them as suffering. It’s easy to forget this and go down the road of suffering, but if we meditate, at some point we recognize what is actually happening. “Oh, yes, that’s right, suffering.” With Zen practice there is a consolation that when profound reality — even if it is horrible profound reality — presents itself, there is a part of the mind that knows to say, “This is a delusion,

and it’s passing. This doesn’t have substance. Don’t hang on to it.” Profound reality has no substance; it comes and goes. That’s what makes it profound, and that’s how we bear the tremendous difficulties of a human lifetime. Horrible and unacceptable things happen to each and every one of us. There is no one who doesn’t have to meet loss or a defeat that strikes us so hard that we can’t imagine how to live another day. This happens to every single person in a human lifetime, and the way we bear that reality is by recognizing that it too is coming and going. What we are experiencing is not the absolute. That’s how fully realizing impermanence helps us to bear the unbearable — even when it is very difficult. Suggested practice: If something happens that upsets you, step back from your emotions, turn your attention to your breath and remember that this will arise and pass, like everything else. darker green of neighbouring trees. Crimson king maples offer a dark maroon leaf colour. We have one for shade growing smack dab in the middle of the nursery. Princeton gold maples offers a bright yellow leaf colour. All three are, in fact, grafted Norway maples. The pink dogwood beside the nursery office is looking its best these days too. It offers a great floral display now, as well as pretty cool fall leaf colour and an interesting shape for winter. Around town, people are seeing the Japanese flowering quince, with bright red or orange flowers. We had a hedge of them in front of the house I grew up in. The flowers will attract hummingbirds. Chaenomeles are often referred to as japonica, which pretty much refers to any plant native to Japan. Many native Canadian plant species are named canadensis, like the eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis.

Dry weather will help reduce fungal growth on outside plants. Diseases like apple scab, brown rot of soft fruits and grey mould of strawberries should be naturally suppressed this year if the weather holds up. Farmers won’t have to spray as much. There hasn’t been any frost for a few days now, so with the snow melted off the mountains it’s pretty safe to put the garden in. Most years, I plant mine when the nursery slows down early June. I still get a good harvest as the warm soil and bright sunshine gets everything off to a good start. For Father’s Day, I plant some colourful annuals. I like mass plantings of drought tolerant plants, thick enough to keep the weeds down. Then it’s only a matter of getting the gardens watered once a week to keep them all looking their best. Happy planting! Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Help available for youth with anxiety

Everyone has times of feeling anxious, scared or fearful. In fact, without our body’s innate ability to sense and respond to pending danger, we would never have survived as humans. These days, however, anxiety disorders are like a car alarm repeatedly sounding when there is no real threat. Anxiety

Youth Mental Health Dr. David Smith disorders are the most common mental health concern for children in B.C., affecting an estimated four per cent of all chil-

dren, impacting their day-to-day life, their friendships, their school performance, their physical health and their sense of well-being. My colleagues and I in the mental health field are concerned that in this modern, fast-paced, wired world, anxiety disorders in children are greatly increasing. We are seeing more children than ever before who are constrained and made miserable by their fears when they should be feeling safe, secure, confident and happy. Anxious feelings include a rapid heartbeat, difficulty catching one’s breath, a sense of doom, sweaty palms, an upset stomach or stomachache, even nausea and vomiting. Focusing on the feelings can cause them to intensify, a vicious cycle. Anxious symptoms become a true anxiety disorder when the anxiety leads to avoidance of the situation that is causing the anxiety and causes significant physical distress and disruption of daily

life and functioning. An unresolved anxiety disorder can often lead to depression or substance use problems in future years. Anxiety, however, exists on a spectrum. A certain amount of anxiety is normal and beneficial. It keeps our children safe and conscientious; it motivates them to perform well. Children who tend to be anxious are often model students: high achieving, diligent, analytical, sensitive, alert, creative and imaginative. Too little anxiety and a child or teenager may take foolish risks or lack motivation to succeed. But too much anxiety and children become so paralyzed by fear that they may be unable to leave their parent’s side, leave the house, go to school, make friends or participate in normal life. The good news is that anxiety can be very successfully managed or treated when required. SEE YOUTH, PAGE 12

From 4,000-5,035 feet on Lady’s Slipper Trail

The Lady’s Slipper Trail is one of four of the Creston Valley’s most popular mountain trails and trail systems. The Rim Trail leads along the crest of the Thompson range,

Then on Creston Mountain there is the Balancing Rock Trail System, which includes the Fern Forest and Creston Mountain trails that connect at the swamp boardwalk. The Lady’s Slipper Trail has kind of unique weather and exposure as it is exposed to inclement weather from more directions than are the other trails I mentioned. they went through “four seasons’ travel” with warm and cold, sun, wind, rain and snow. It is quite possible to experience that on any mountain especially in exposed areas but until now I had never seen the significance of Arrow Mountain’s position in this Kootenay River valley. On the way up the trail there are several exposed overlooks on the west side (left) of the trail that might be windy but are great spots to view the valley and the winding of the Kootenay River against the background of the Selkirk Mountain range. The fore mountains, starting in Canada, in the south are Rykerts, Dodge, Creston Mountain ( directly west) and Mount Midgely on the north side of Summit Creek. Farther north on a clear day one can see the peaks of Hulme and Steeple and the fore mountains, along Kootenay Lake, Kootenay Peak and Mount McGregor just north of Cultus Creek at Tye. On the south side of the U.S.-Canada boundary are the sharp peaks

Moving Along Together Week 3 Our weekly sessions at TAPS for this new program are attended by people affected by memory changes and their family caregivers. We use the “By Us for Us” Guides published through the University of Waterloo by the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program as points of discussion chosen by the participants. We’re offering a few ideas and resources in these columns for your information, for family, friends and loved ones. Information will be posted on the Valley Community Services website. This is meant to complement any information available through other sources and stimulate discussion. In this third session participants chose the Guide: Enhancing Wellness. We’ll be covering this topic over two weeks. The focus this week is: Maintaining Physical Well-being and the following was drawn from the guide including comments by Brenda Huanam in the Introduction in the Guide.

All wellness components of our lives overlap and are intertwined with physical, psychological and emotional, social and spiritual aspects contributing to our total health. When faced with changes, paying attention to and enhancing all these aspects can make a meaningful difference to how we adapt to the challenge of change and also how we can continue to live our lives to the fullest extent. In giving you this heads-up, we’re hoping you might consider if there is anything here that might be valuable, might be worth a few moments of your time for a closer look for yourself, or in assisting others. What does make a difference to how we live fully? How do you treat your mind, body and soul?

“Two factors are important to enhance wellness for persons living with early-stage memory loss: Being proactive and establishing routines.” We’ll talk more about being proactive next week. Developing healthy habits and creating routines can help keep you on track. While situations constantly change, you can reassess your situation on a regular basis to make the necessary changes. Now, what are more habit and routine based than our food choices and activity levels, and also contribute to our well-being? The Canada Food Guide is a list of recommended food choices for healthy living and this week the group reviewed it, utilizing a checklist for their usual choices to become aware of what their habits are. There was a lot of discussion, sharing of ideas and at least one breakfast recipe! A suggestion for folks who were not sure about adapting it, was for them to follow the guide for one week and report back. Google Health Canada’s Webpage for a recommended checklist. Moderation, that ages old wisdom, is always recommended, and you have probably heard about some nutrients as potentially playing a part in reducing risks and enhancing functions. For example, some research suggests there is value in including foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as olive oil, fish, raw nuts and seeds and food rich in flavonoids or other antioxidants including a little red wine, green tea, chocolate (75% cacao content or higher). Turmeric is a spice recognized for its antioxidant properties. Reducing the amount of processed foods, including fresh foods and eating smaller amounts more often, keeping hydrated and eating a variety of foods are other suggestions.

We haven’t touched on the importance of physical exercise and its role in maintaining and enhancing memory. We’ll say more about that next week. This week the group including caregivers began a program at the Creston and District Community Complex which they will be doing every week. Thanks to fitness instructor Tia Wayling in partnering with us on developing this aspect of the program. Ongoing posts and further links can be found at http://www.valley.services following the links at Seniors Services to TAPS then to Moving Along Together.

of Fisher and Parker peaks. Now let’s take a closer look. The Lady’s Slipper Trail is accessed by the Goat Mountain Forest Service Road that takes off, to the south, from the end of Foster Road in Lakeview. At the six-kilometre marker is a crescent pullout on the right. On the left is the trailhead and sign. In late spring, summer and early fall, the road is easily maneuvered with a high-clearance vehicle. However, skilled drivers have gone up with cars. To reach the trailhead, usually, one can just stay on the main drag; however, rain can obliterate vehicle tracks. One could also say, at major intersections stay right. At the first intersection, keep right. The other turns back to the left. At the second, keep right. At this division there is a post bearing an arrow and “Lady’s Slipper Trail”. At the third intersection, there is a board sign with engraved letters indicating the route to the right. It may take 30 minutes to reach the trailhead. In the East Shore and Creston areas, there has been an increased number of incidents where hikers’ vehicles have been broken into. It is best not to leave valuables in the car. If necessary, put them in the trunk or take them with you. Just a reminder. On the last day of April when five of us took to the Lady’s Slipper Trail, one couldn’t have wished for much better weather, not too hot and not too cold. It wasn’t long before we started shedding jackets but when we got to the mountaintop and sat down to eat our lunch we found it cool enough to put our jackets back on. The elevation gain from approximately 1,234 to 4,934 feet (376 to 1,504 metres) and the breezier conditions made it feel much cooler. The flower roll call was much the same as other years at this time. Calypso orchids (a.k.a. fairy slippers) were the most striking with

their slipper-shaped pink flowers. Another was the creamy white twinflower honeysuckle (Not to be mistaken with twinflower, which is also in the honeysuckle family with leaves, flowers and fruit in pairs). Counting the yellow round-leaved violet, just about every color was found along the trail. Purple flowers of ballhead waterleaf added a different color to the trail. When we got near the top we were in the spring season for the second time around! Yellow glacier lilies, white and pink spring beauties and an occasional mountain bluebell (Mertensia) displayed a splash of brilliant blue amongst the fresh green foliage. It is nice to get out on the trails in the spring season. Not just the Lady’s Slipper Trail but every trail in these Kootenay mountains, in its own right, is beautiful and something to appreciate in spring, in summer and in autumn. The Lady’s Slipper Trail has its own special show of summer flowers, also. While hiking along the Lady’s Slipper Trail I couldn’t help but think of Ralph Moore and all the energy and time he put into helping to establish many of our local trails. These have done much to create awareness of and appreciation for our unique Kootenay mountains. At several points along the trails, I saw evidence of his presence there in old chainsaw cuts to clear the trail. At a specific spot I remembered how he would excitedly tell people about the rare, uniquely colored pinesap plant one might find along this trail. How does one remember Ralph? How does one best remember him? Perhaps it is by picking up the “torch”, in whatever way there is an opportunity, to foster awareness appreciation and action along our trails and for the endless creation in our Kootenay Mountains. ith hair product instead of booze bottles, and scissors instead of a six-shooter, Doran Amatto’s saloon is a bit different to any other. But then, his shop at the corner of 16th Avenue and Canyon Street is called the Barber Saloon. The refurbished travel trailer, with its wood siding and red, white and blue barber poles, looks like a Story and miniature throwback to the Wild West. It’s been photo by open for a few weeks, Brian since Amatto arrived in Lawrence Creston, calling it home after returning to the Kootenays following several years in Kelowna. “A saloon motif would fit into anywhere I went,” he said. “And it’s masculine.” Appealing to men is key to having a barbershop. For most women, a new do is a planned event; for men, the process is much simpler. “When men get a haircut, it’s usually spur-of-the-moment,” Amatto said. “Most men just come in and say, ‘Make it short.’ ” The profession is nothing new to Amatto. He grew up in Nelson, where his father owned a barber shop, Razor’s Edge, above the dry cleaner, as well as an ice cream shop at corner of Stanley and Baker streets, where it can be seen in the 1987 film, Roxanne. (Amatto was also behind the scenes during filming around Nelson, working as a night guard for the North Shore exterior set built for Housekeeping in 1986.) “I spent my childhood watching my old man cut hair,” he said. “Cutting hair just became second nature.” Although he eventually studied barbering in New Brunswick, Amatto wasn’t interested as a teenager, and bought a van to cruise to every Canadian province and territory, eventually working backstage on two tours with Stompin’ Tom Connors. “I’m not a country fan, but I like Stompin’ Tom because he’s funny,” he said. Amatto has also been a woodworker, selling log furniture at a roadside stand in

Balfour and running a larger shop in Kelowna for several years. And he’s restored antique boats. But the social jobs — bartending, waitering and even pulling a rickshaw — are the ones he enjoys most. Beyond that, he appreciates the chance to be creative, which woodworking, restoring boats and cutting hair allow. “I’ve got to create, and doing hair cutting falls into that category,” Amatto said. “You’ve got to read a person’s face,

the shape of their face and the way their hair grows.” Amatto’s Barber Saloon, which made its debut in Balfour earlier this year, isn’t the first travel trailer he’s adapted to a new purpose — he’s also created a hotdog stand, a barbecue restaurant and a ski/snowboard tuning shop. “If I see something and go, ‘Wow, that’s cool. I’m gonna do it,’ I usually start about ten minutes after the idea

pops into my head,” he said. The Barber Saloon will see a few changes in the near future, with a deck soon to be added, making the new shop look like a more permanent part of Amatto’s new home. “I wanted to find a town I would like to live in that wasn’t too big,” he said. “I don’t want to live in Kelowna, I don’t want to live in Nelson. “I’m still a Kootenay guy. I’ve got my mountains and I’ve got my lake.”

Regular exercise and reliable routines in children are often all it takes to quell mild cases. Mild and moderate anxiety is very responsive to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which is a process of addressing the unhelpful thoughts and actions that underlie anxiety. Thought stopping, talking back to negative thoughts, not believing everything you think, relaxation techniques like calming breathing, mindfulness meditation, and gradual safe exposure to the things you fear are all examples of types of CBT. All children — and adults, too — could benefit from learning simple CBT techniques to turn off their body alarms that are sounding unnecessarily. In more long term or severe cases of anxiety — such as panic disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessivecompulsive disorder — treatment may include a period of anti-anxiety medication in addition to teaching the child age-appropriate CBT techniques, an approach called “pills plus skills”. If you are worried about your child or teenager’s anxiety, there are many places to get help. Many online resources as well as books, some written for specific age groups, are available to give in depth information about anxiety and step-by-step instructions for specific CBT techniques. For parents of children and youth, the FORCE (Families Organized for Recognition and Care Equality) Society for Kids’ Mental Health, in partnership with the Ministry

The Advance interviewed local action team co-chair Dr. Randy Grahn about youth mental health services in the Creston Valley. The story appeared in the April 16 paper, and subscribers can read it online at www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca/news/299961901. html (or tinyurl.com/ke8qw73).

of Children and Family Development’s Friends for Life program, offers an online parent program for parents of children ages 4-13 years. Anxiety BC (anxietybc.ca) is another great site and offers detailed pages for adults and youth. Other sites include mindcheck.ca and keltymentalhealth.ca. If you feel your child needs professional help, see your family doctor or call Service BC at 1-800-661-8773 and ask for the MCFD Child and Youth Mental Health office in your community. In my next column, we will talk about depression in children and teenagers. Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for the Interior Health Authority. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior and Vancouver Island regions. David James and Big River are often described as one of the most authentic Johnny Cash tribute shows touring today. Thousands of fans agree with those reviews, as they routinely sell out shows in venues large and small across Canada and the U.S. James and his band – Todd Sacerty on bass, Duncan Symonds on guitar and pedal steel, and Colin Stevenson on drums – look and sound like the legacy of the Man in Black, and when they step on stage, they live it. From the way Cash holds his guitar to the way he talks to his audience, the legendary musician lives again when James steps to the mike and says, “Hello – I’m almost Johnny Cash.”

Open 7 Days a Week ~ 11am to 5pm

The Blossom Festival has become a major event in the Creston Valley, offering something for everyone with a few new wrinkles thrown in to keep it fresh. For instance, the Friday night opening ceremonies have gone back to bringing in a wellknown entertainer to headline the show. The show will feature David James and Big River, a group dedicated to preserving the music of Johnny Cash. The same night, the Rotary clubs will

announce who the citizen of the year is. Local dignitaries will cut the ribbon to officially open the four-day weekend festival. Saturday is the busiest day of the weekend. Early in the morning, the Creston Lions Club will be setting up shop next to Sunset Seed Co. with their big breakfast featuring two pancakes, two sausages, two fried eggs, juice and coffee for $6.

74TH BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

New events on the Blossom Festival schedule BY HUGH JOHNSTON

The people in charge of the Creston Valley Blossom Festival have decided to not stand on their laurels but to bring in some new events. Get your Blossom Festival passport from participating merchants and take it to the 24 businesses taking part. Once you have your passports stamped, turn it into the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. On Monday at 12:30 p.m., head down to Centennial Park for the big draw. The winner will receive a voucher for one nights accommodation at Panorama Mountain Resort. Last year’s big success was the 100-kilometre yard sale, which ran from Yahk to Riondel. It is back again and organizers are looking forward to attracting more residents to put their goods at the end of their driveway and wait for the customers to come. The parking lot at the Peterbilt dealer, formerly Creston Truck Service, will be an assembly point for Creston vendors. Sunday morning will see the kickoff and even bigger crowds than last year are anticipated. Also returning this year is the midway after a lengthy

absence. It has returned to Creston in recent years either in April or early May. This year, West Coast Amusements will be bringing in more rides as it sets up shop on the vacant lot next to Extra Foods on Cook Street for your midway fun on Thursday through Sunday. The teen dance in Millennium Park will be held on Friday this year to accommodate the busy schedule of popular DJ Robin. South of town, the Therapeutic Riding Program will be holding an open house, and you can also take a tour of Spectrum Farms from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. In case you had forgotten, the John Bucyk Arena has a cement floor, so on Saturday from 3-5 p.m. you can rollerblade with music. Enter to win a Fitbit. Skate rentals will be available. On Saturday, the Creston branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is holding a Blossom Festival dance beginning at 8 p.m. Perfect Storm will provide the live music. Sunday will see the Rally in the Valley, which is a U12 soccer jamboree on the pitch next to the Creston and District Community Complex.

Spectrum Farms

Eleven lambs, this one only an hour old, will be showcased on this weekend’s tours of Spectrum Farms.

Sunday is also movie time at the Tivoli Theatre with the showing of the family movie, Finding Normal, sponsored by the Creston Ministerial Association. On Monday, don’t miss the wheelbarrow races being held outside Home Hardware Bulding Centre at 9:30 a.m. Feel like a swim? Success by Six is sponsoring a free public swim at the community complex pool from 2:15-4:15 p.m.

74TH BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Lieutenant-governor visiting during festival BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

www.ltgov.bc.ca

B.C. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon will visit Creston this weekend.

B.C. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon will be arriving in Creston Saturday morning, geared up for a full day of touring and Creston Valley Blossom Festival events. “Her timing is excellent,” Mayor Ron Toyota said. “I think that at first it was just a coincidence that she was coming on Blossom Festival Saturday. She will have a very full day of experiencing what the Creston Valley has to offer.” Guichon, who will be in Toyota’s company for much of her visit, has an intensive schedule to follow once she arrives at town hall at 8:30 a.m., where she will be greeted by the mayor and his wife, Judy. She and Toyota will almost immediately head off for a meeting with Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie. During her visit, Louie will lead a tour of the new LKB roundhouse (which is not intended for use in public events) and provide her with information about the proposed expansion to the LKB’s Yaqan Nukiy School. They will then return to Creston, where a meeting with Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 29 will precede Guichon’s participation in the Blossom Festival parade. Invited guests at the traditional postparade lunch at town hall will be able to meet Guichon, a resident of Nicola Valley, where she owned and operated a cow-calf operation prior to her appointment by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Guests will include KootenayColumbia MP David Wilks, NelsonCreston MLA Michelle Mungall and Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt. In the afternoon, Toyota will accompany Guichon and her entourage as she visits the 25th annual Yaqan Nukiy Powwow, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area and the Creston Museum and Archives.

“We are very fortunate to be hosting the Honourable Judith Guichon during Blossom Festival celebrations,” Toyota said. “It is a

wonderful time to show off the Creston Valley and it looks like the weather will be co-operating, too!”

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project Open House and Invitation to Comment Teck Coal Limited (Proponent) is proposing to extend the working life of the Coal Mountain mine by developing and operating the proposed Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located approximately 15 km South of Sparwood, British Columbia, and would produce an estimated 76.5 million metric tonnes of clean coal over the estimated mine life of 34 years.

At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

EAO accepts public comments in the following ways:

After taking public comments into account, EAO will finalize the Application Information Requirements and issue them to the Proponent.

•By Online Form at http://www.eao.gov.bc.ca

•By Mail: The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment Karen Christie certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Executive Project Director Environmental Assessment Office PO Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) Box 9426 Stn Prov Govt for a certificate by the Proponent, Environmental Assessment Victoria BC V8W 9V1 Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements. •By Fax: 250-356-7477 Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of Valued Components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. This task is done through the Valued Components Selection Document.

An electronic copy of the Valued Components Selection Document and information regarding the environmental assessment process are available at www.eao.gov.bc.ca.

Open House

Copies of the Valued Components Selection Document are also available for viewing at these locations:

To provide information about Valued Components Selection, EAO invites the public to attend an Open House. There will be one Open House, to be held as follows:

Teck Community and Aboriginal Affairs Office 116 Centennial St, Sparwood 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday

at:

Hosmer Community Centre Front Street, Hosmer (next to the Hosmer Fire Hall)

on:

June 4, 2015

Sparwood Public Library 110 Pine Avenue, Sparwood

from:

Invitation to Comment There are 30 days for the public to submit comments in relation to Valued Components Selection. The comment period will begin on May 25, 2015 and end on June 24,2015. All comments received during this comment period in relation to Valued Components Selection will be considered. The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects—environmental, economic, social, heritage and health—that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process.

Fernie Heritage Library 492 Third Ave, Fernie Coal Mountain Operations Main Gate Corbin Road, Corbin If you are unable to participate at this time, there will be an additional comment period during the Application Review stage when you will also be able to provide comments to EAO on the proposed Project.

Students collect batteries to help environment and save lives CANYON-LISTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Canyon-Lister Elementary School’s Be the Change group collected 954 batteries of all varieties throughout the month of February. The children learned that recycling batteries saves our environment and it saves lives. Batteries contain toxic material. If batteries are disposed of in the garbage, landfills are “poisoned”. This poison leaches into the groundwater and drains out to connecting water sources, including rivers and lakes. Animals and fish become poisoned;

birds eat the fish and the cycle goes on. Recycling batteries also means saving lives. The Call 2 Recycle company that provided a drop-off box will recycle the batteries and send the reclaimed zinc overseas to children suffering from zinc deficiency. Did you know that 2 billion people worldwide suffer from zinc deficiency? It has become a global health concern. Did you know that the zinc recovered from one AA battery saves the lives of six children? The CLES students’ 954 batteries will save approximately 5,300 children’s lives. Be the change!

Dorothy Catherine Blain January 26, 1930 ~ April 23, 2015

Dorothy passed away peacefully on April 23, 2015. Dorothy was born on January 26, 1930 and spent her childhood in Wolfe Island, Ontario. She married Cpl. Bill Blain in 1952 in Kingston, Ontario and they spent the next 20 years moving their family from RCAF Stations in Ontario, Germany, Quebec and Alberta. After retirement, they moved to the Creston Valley to a little home on a big lot. They built their dream home where they could see across the valley and all the mountains. Dorothy loved watching the birds and seeing the beautiful sunsets from their dining room window. Dorothy was never idle, sewing dresses for her girls and later, knitting sweaters for her grandchildren. She studied oil painting, and gave many paintings away to anyone who wanted them. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles, knit, crochet and sew. She bought many cross-stitch kits from the Gleaners, which she would finish and then donate it back to the Gleaners or give it to a friend or neighbour. Dorothy enjoyed her morning coffee at 6:00 am with her 'Breakfast Club' friends and had many pleasant Thursday lunches with the 'ladies who lunch'. She could be counted on the make the coffee for the Tuesday afternoon Rotacrest dances, and yes, she danced too! She played crib some Wednesday evenings, bingo some Friday mornings and loved going out with the 'Supper Group' on Friday evenings. Dorothy was pre-deceased by an infant son Robert in 1958 and by Bill, her husband and love of her life, in 2008. She leaves behind daughters Ruth (Kerry) MacKenzie, Faye Oszli, Lorna (Tom) Stanford, Arley (Dave) Haner; as well as seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family sends a special thank you to Dorothy's dear neighbours and friends who visited her in the hospital. Her family would also like to thank all the staff of Creston Valley Hospital who treated her with such care and comfort. At Dorothy's request, there will be no service.

String trio playing women’s works in Crawford Bay LA CAFAMORE

La Cafamore is in its sixth season of performing chamber works in the Kootenays. The trio consisting of Angela Snyder (violin), Alexis More (viola) and Carolyn Cameron (piano) will perform works exclusively by female composers on May 24 in Crawford Bay. “Some of my favorite concerts have been those featuring works by women,” said Cameron. “I’m not sure if it’s the thrill of discovering a hidden jewel, promoting the talented underdog or just getting completely involved in amazing works. I’m always surprised that these pieces aren’t performed more often.” The dissemination of classical music into the popular consciousness involves several steps: talented composers, willing publishers, able performers and a public receptive to the work. If any of these steps is missing, great works can be overlooked. Take the case of Fanny Mendelssohn. “By all accounts, she was every bit as talented as her younger brother, Felix,” said Cameron, “ but her family and society’s belief that women should not seek careers in music resulted in Felix publish-

ing many of her works under his name.” One such work became a favorite of Queen Victoria. The queen, upon meeting Felix, asked to play her favorite song to him. Felix sheepishly confessed that the music was, in fact, written by his sister, Fanny. Even to this day, many of Fanny’s over 450 works remain unpublished. Rebecca Clarke’s works were largely ignored during her lifetime, even though she is considered one of the most important composers from the period between the first and second world wars. She would sometimes use a male alias for some of her works, and received much greater praise for those works than the works performed under her own name. It wasn’t until very late in her life that some interest in her compositions occurred. Amy Beach, on the other hand, met with acceptance and success during her lifetime. She was a source of local pride in Boston, being the first American to achieve such a high degree of proficiency without the benefit of European training. She had a publisher who was receptive to her work and judged it on merit, rather than on its com-

pliance with society’s accepted views of femininity. “Critics would say things like, ‘The music sounds very masculine, and inappropriate for a woman,’ ” said Cameron. “Male composers did not face the same type of scrutiny.” Amy Beach was so incredibly talented both as a performer and composer that the criticisms did not hold her back. “We hope that our audience will appreciate the works,” said Cameron. “They deserve a prominent place in the classical music repertoire.” The concert at Crawford Bay’s Harrison Memorial Church begins at 2 p.m. Admission is by donation.

In between acabe presenting a musical offering spanning demic years, he pursued supplementary four centuries and six cultures on Sunday studies with such internationally renowned cellists as Janos Starker, Aldo Parisot and YoYo Ma. He was born and raised in Edmonton, where he began his musical studies at the age of three. Following his graduation from McGill, Faragher returned to Edmonton where he undertook studies leading to an MBA, became the head cello instructor for the Edmonton public school system, as well as serving as head of the string department at Grant McEwan College. Faragher is a prodigious talent with an innovative spirit. Rather than a career in a major orchestra, he has chosen a life in the Kootenays where he is free to explore the full range of teaching, coaching, performing and conducting possibilities. These include the position of music director of the Symphony of the Kootenays. Nichol pursued a meandering career path that passed through a master’s degree in European history before being diverted from academic ambitions into the life of a symphony orchestra musician.
