Sci-Fi Double Feature celebrates B-movies with cardboard puppets WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser

Yukon thespian Brian Fidler was watching a lot of cheeseball B-movies, noting with amusement the low production value, when a thought struck him. “I was watching all these movies from the 50s and 60s, and with the rockets you can obviously see the strings holding them up, the meteor is made of papier mache. This was all pre-CGI, so there had to have been someone standing above pulling those strings and moving those rockets,” he said. “I started to wonder: what did it look like on set? Who did they hire to move that stuff around? That was the

starting point, was that idea of pulling back the curtain.” The finished product, Sci-Fi Double Feature, involves Fidler using crude puppets on-camera to create two films: Attack of the Slime-o-tron and Last Day on Earth. Fidler scrambles to get the proper puppets into place while his costar Edward Westerhuis films him live—mistakes and all—then projects it on the big screen. “The show is like a Rube Goldberg machine, where everything is in continuous motion. He’s following us around with the camera and we’re trying to keep up, but there’s always an inherent risk of knocking something over or something breaking apart.” And when Kootenay audiences come to see it on May 16 and 17, they’ll have the option of watching the puppets or the puppeteers. “We keep the storytelling really simple, because there’s a lot of information coming at the audience and we don’t want to overwhelm them. There’s a moment of adjustment when the audience is uncertain—‘are we going to watch the big screen or watch the puppeteers down there’? Most people find they end up moving back and forth between the two.” Fidler said the two films are a celebration of the science fiction genre. “The first movie is about aliens, and it’s an intergalactic love story. An alien flees to earth and is pursued by tormentors, but then he falls in love,” said Fiddler. The focus then shifts to time travel. “The second one is a time-traveling show, with this professor and his dog. At one point they encounter a threeheaded dinosaur.” But the puppets don’t always cooperate the way they’re

supposed to. “The original idea was to make everything out of cardboard, hockey tape and hot glue. In some cases these are fairly crude, 2-dimensional illustrations,” he said. And if things start to come apart, or if some sort of mistake happens, that’s considered part of the fun. The show features music and sound design by Jordy Walker, who Fidler said was a huge part of the creative process. Fidler is coming to the Kootenays after an invitation from local thespian Lucas Myers, who he went to school with. “He an I live parallel lives, it’s true. He’s got his theatre company, and he’s living in a small town married to a teacher with two daughters. I’m doing the same thing up here in the Yukon, I’ve got two boys and with Ramshackle Theatre I’ve been touring around with my shows, trying to live this small-town theatre life.” Fidler encouraged the audience to show up in costume. “The more people dress up, the more it’s like an event,” he said, noting that a tinfoil hat goes a long way. Sci-Fi Double Feature will play at the Capitol Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on May 16 and 2 p.m. on May 17. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students.

Place names Kaslo’s earliest mention was in 1889 Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Ninety-fifth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Kaslo is either a corruption of a French name or a First Nations word, with the odds favouring the latter theory. However, it’s so complicated that we’ll devote several installments to it. The community took its name from the river, first mentioned with a different spelling in George W. Dawson’s 1889 Report on a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic] District, British Columbia: “Fry River, seven miles and a half from the north end of the lake on its east side, and Caslo River, 18 miles from the same point on the opposite side, are the only other important affulents in the northern half of the lake.” (Fry River, named for Richard Fry, would be demoted to Fry Creek by 1891.) The earliest mention using the present spelling was a legal ad placed by a W. Jensen in the Victoria Daily Colonist of Dec. 13, 1889: “Notice is hereby given that, 60 days after date, I intend to apply to the Hon. Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works to purchase 1920 acres of timber land, more or less, situated on Kaslo Creek, West Kootenay ...”  The Kaslo townsite was first mentioned by Randall H. Kemp in the Spokane Review of Sept. 4, 1891: “The Kaslo creek excitement has in a measure subsided … As usual the townsite operator is early on the ground [at]  the mouth of Kaslo, eight miles beyond [Ainsworth].” On the 26th of that month, the Nelson Miner carried a story with the headline “Sale of town lots of Kaslo City.” It read: “The owners of the pre-emption at the mouth of Kaslo Creek … have decided that there is more money in selling town lots than in raising farm produce. To that end, a townsite has

Ad from the Hot Springs News, May 4, 1892. Kaslo dropped the ‘city’ once it actually became one in 1893.

been laid out, and lots are now on the market …” Kaslo City was surveyed by Samuel Parker Tuck and the plan deposited in the land registry on Nov. 5, 1891. It was referred to as Kaslo City occasionally thereafter, but when the post office opened on Aug. 1, 1892, it was simply called Kaslo. It was incorporated as a city in 1893 but reverted to a village in 1959. “It is interesting to note that mostly every new western town has to have the affix ‘city’ to start with,” wrote the British Columbia News on Feb. 25, 1898. “As soon as it is old enough to go it alone, it drops the crutch.” The Daily Nor’Wester of Winnipeg of March 27, 1897 noted: “There is by the way a little ambiguity in the mind of the general public as to the name of the city of Kaslo. It is called Kaslo and Kaslo City but the name of the town is the City of Kaslo, by which it will be understood that it is in fact not a city, but a town bearing the name of the City of Kaslo.”  Next: Where did Kaslo come from?

Health MARITIMES BY MOTORCOACH

Understanding self-harm — “Why is my child doing this?”

By Dr. David Smith “Why would my daughter do this?” That is what bewildered parents plead to me and other mental health professionals in BC too often these days. The youth — often but not always — is a female between ages 10 and 19 who is being treated for one of a variety of forms of self harm. Self-harm exists along a spectrum anywhere from self-injuries such as cutting herself with a sharp object, repeatedly hitting herself, or burning herself, or sometimes even poisoning herself with medications or noxious substances. In the last five years, children and youth rates for hospitalization and ER visits for self-harm have soared. This past November a special Canadian study on self-harm found that since 2009 self-harm hospitalization rates for girls have increased by more than 110 per cent and ER visits by 98 per cent. While hospitalization rates for self harm were four times more common among girls, rates among boys had also increased substantially in the study. What is going on? While good research about self harm is just emerging, my mental health colleagues and I believe some reasons may be worth further investigation : feelings of disconnection among youth from loved ones and from themselves; youth feeling insignificant and unworthy; the dominant 24/7 online culture that magnifies bullying and social pressure and ramps up stress; and the normalization of self harm that youth find via the Internet. As well, selfharm, rather than being hidden or dismissed as in the past, is now being more recognized. At the heart of most self harm is usually

psychological pain and a disordered way of coping with unbearable feelings or an inability to regulate emotional responses under stressful situations (somewhat similar to various addictions or eating disorders). Youth will often tell me that only way to relieve their emotional pain is by hurting themselves. Sometimes it is the lack of feeling that compels them to self harm. Youth will say they feel empty, numb, as if they don’t exist: “Feeling the pain feels better than feeling nothing at all.” For others, it gives a sense of control , that rather than being the victim of others inflicting pain on them, they are the ones controlling their own pain. While self-harm occurs among BC youth from all sectors of society, it is more common among youth who are socially or economically disadvantaged; who have past trauma, neglect or abuse; who have other diagnosed mental health conditions or other illnesses; and who have uncertainty about their sexual orientation or who have recently come out in the youth LGBQT community. While self-injury such as cutting and burning is usually distinct from direct suicidal behaviour, youth who self-harm in these ways are many times more likely than the general population to eventually complete suicide. So it is very important that the youth gets effective help. I am particularly concerned that self harm in the form of ingesting poison — taking high doses of over -the- counter medication, prescription medication or ingesting a noxious substance —often represents a true suicide attempt in youth. Parents and health professionals must take poisoning actions very seriously and ensure the youth gets appropriate, urgent help through emergency services. In non-urgent self-harm situations, the first step is to see your family doctor or contact the Child and Youth Mental

Health program provided by the Ministry of Children and Family Development in your region. Call Service BC at 1-800-6618773 for the MCFD office nearest to you. Good information and support can be found through links at the Canadian Mental Health Association (cmha.ca), the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre (keltyresources.ca) and heretohelp.bc.ca. As well, an excellent resource is the website for the National Interdisciplinary Network on Self-Harm, led by Dr. Mary Kay Nixon, a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in Victoria (insync-group.ca). Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying issues that are causing the pain and teaching the youth more effective coping skills and stress reduction techniques. Cognitive behavioural therapy, group therapy, and dialectic behavioural therapy can be very helpful for these skills. Medications may be given if co-existing depression, anxiety or psychosis are part of the underlying issues. Adults — parents, relatives, teachers, coaches, mentors — have a very important role in helping to support the youth to increase the youth’s feelings of connection. Teaching youth healthy ways to express feelings of pain and anger, and new ways to cope with life’s stresses can also help youth leave self harm behind. Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for Interior Health. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The Collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together across BC to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services. The Collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.

Dancers from B.C. and beyond will be lacing up their ghillies and pinning their tartans for two days of competition this weekend, sponsored by the Trail Caledonian Society and the Castlegar Highland Games. The annual Kate E. Shaw Memorial Competition will welcome local highland dancers from ages four to 17 on Saturday, as well as those from other areas of the province, Washington, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The event honours Kate E. Shaw, the region’s highland dancing legend who taught students in Trail, Castlegar, Nelson, Creston and Grand Forks for more than 75 years. “Mrs Shaw was the organizer of the Trail Caledonian Highland Games here in Trail every May for over 40 years,” said Chris Piva, herself a Kate E. Shaw dancer who took over the dance school in 2006. “She taught children of all ages, levels and abilities, and never turned away any individual who wanted to learn how to dance.” Piva continues Mrs Shaw’s legacy with the Trail dance school, still named the Kate E. Shaw School of Highland Dance. She currently teaches 32 students from ages three to 16, many whom will be part of this weekend’s competition that over two days will test skills in a variety of Scottish dances. The event runs in the Trail Memorial Centre’s gym Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. then moves to Castlegar on Sunday for the Castlegar Highland Games in Stanley Humphries Secondary School gym beginning at 10 a.m.

Piva, a member of the British Association of Teachers of Dancing and Scotdance Canada since 1993, said that competitions are not mandatory, but the majority choose to participate and challenge their strength, endurance and artistry of dance. “Highland dancing can be seen at nearly every modern day Highland games event,” she explained. “It is highly competitive and technical form of dance that requires many hours of practice and training over several years.” She said the dance form is similar to ballet with respect to technical requirements and training required for each performance. “Scottish Highland Dancing provides an intensive workout for the entire body, as the technique requires a considerable amount of strength, stamina and grace.” Judges evaluate a dancer on three major criteria; timing, technique and artistic interpretation. The latter is the essential element of all dance and artistry which cannot be quantified or reduced to any set of rules or specific points, Piva explained. “But which does concern the ability of the dancer or performer to convey a sense of feeling, understanding, and appreciation of the art form.” The notion of how dances were to be executed in competition has changed dramatically over the years because its origins are shrouded in antiquity and legend. “For instance, doing an early 20th century Sword Dance in a competition today would get a dancer disqualified nearly immediately,” said Piva. “There used to be terrible confusion as to what would be allowed where until

the (official board) came up with a standard that has become acceptable to the majority of competitive dancers.” The scoring system beings with each dancer starting with 100 points, and mistakes, or poor execution results in subtraction of points at the judge’s discretion. “The dancers are then ranked from most to least points, and medals and points are given based on the number of dancers in the class,” Piva explained. After Saturday’s competition, past students of Kate E. Shaw will be celebrating what would have been the well-loved teacher’s 100th birthday. In a cèilidh-like celebration, which includes traditional Scottish country dances, piping and drumming, dancers from Prince George, Regina, Vancouver and Victoria will gather in the Riverbelle for the Kate E. Shaw Highland Dance Reunion. For information, contact Michelle McPeek at 778-868-3508 or by email, mcpeek@telus.net.

Students in the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking program are currently putting the finishing touches on the projects that will be on display at the annual year end show starting May 22 at the Nelson Trading Company building.

Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Program Set for Year End Show

Renowned in the furniture design and woodworking communities for the highly skilled craftspeople it produces, the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Program is preparing for an impressive showcase of talent at the annual Year End Show. A Nelson tradition, students in the Fine Woodworking Program will have their finished products on display between May 22 and May 24 at the Nelson Trading Company Building (402 Baker Street). “It’s been a fantastic year and great learning environment,” says student Cody Hutchinson. “It’s amazing how far we have all come and credit has to go to the two instructors in charge of the program, Michael Grace and David Fraser.” Students from all across Canada arrive to the Silver King Campus with a wide range of backgrounds and experience to study at Selkirk College in the world-class workshop and learn from the veteran instructors. Over the past nine months the Grace and Fraser have led the class in traditional and innovative techniques which enable students to head out the door with the skills and an extensive knowledge base for a variety of jobs in the fine woodworking field. Just as importantly, students are leaving with an education in design and the creative process in furniture making, turning their ideas and sketches

into reality. “I feel that I now have the educational background to dive head first into a future of fine craftsmanship,” says Paolo Riva, who came to Selkirk College from Winnipeg, Manitoba. This year’s class of 17 students have persevered through the nine month program to produce exquisite pieces of furniture and invite everyone to come out and celebrate their accomplishments, while taking a closer inspection of their work. Some of the work on display will be for sale. The Year End Show will open on Friday (May 22) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be a reception open to the public from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the students and faculty in attendance. The program is also inviting the public to come and celebrate instructor Michael Grace’s last year at Selkirk College. The show will continue Saturday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Throughout the weekend, there will be students on hand to answer any questions and talk about their experiences over the past nine months at Selkirk College. For more information on the Fine Woodworking program at Selkirk College and to view an online photo gallery of faculty and past work visit selkirk.ca/program/fine-woodworking

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.

The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.

Without Audéo V

With Audéo V

The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.

New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to

is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

A new approach found for Nelson pool renos

Busy Schedule?

Renovations to the Nelson aquatic centre will be re-tendered using a new approach after both bids for the project recently came in over budget. The recreation commission will hire a construction manager, who will put small trade-specific jobs out to tender and then coordinate the work rather than try to find one company to do everything. “This allows for less risk for individual contractors and we have more control over what they are doing,” said the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s Joe Chirico. A report released by the commission this month that analyzed the gap between the budget and the bids concluded the change in contracting method could achieve the greatest cost savings. The budget is $4.92 million with borrowing not to exceed $4.5 million. The two bids previously received and rejected were both more than $1 million over budget. Although the project was originally expected to begin early this month, the facility will remain open until July.

Pacific Coastal has decided to end its short-lived service between Trail and Kelowna. Citing low ridership, the company’s spokesperson said the lack of passengers made the direct flights from the Trail Regional Airport to Kelowna unsustainable. “At the end of the day, we were flying around with less than 20 per cent load factor,” said Spencer Smith, vice president of Commercial Services for the airline. “It varies, but at the end of this

past month, we were operating at less than 20 per cent and only generating half of the revenue that we needed to justify keeping the plane in the air.” The service began in mid-January with Pacific Coastal hoping to offer passengers a safer alternative than navigating the sometimestreacherous roads between Trail and Kelowna. “We figured it would be a predominantly winter-time market, which is why we started it in January,” Smithsaid. “We thought starting in the winter gave us the best opportunity to get people

that maybe we can come back and try again possibly in the fall and see what happens into the winter,” he said. “Hopefully we won’t see a winter that we had this year. (With ski tourism) it just didn’t happen this year.” Those with reservations on flights from Trail to Kelowna leaving after May 15 will be giving a fill refund. Future fliers with a complimentary Trail to Kelowna certificate will now be able to apply that certificate to flights to Vancouver. For more information, visit www.pacificcoastal.com.

that are less inclined to go on the roads. It was the mildest winter ever, so that worked against us. Maybe in a different winter it would have worked better.” However, he didn’t rule out any future options for the route. Smith says Pacific Coastal could be looking into seasonal flight scheduling options. For example, offering the flights to Kelowna in the winter when roads are bad and recreation enthusiasts are packing up their skis. “We certainly leaving it open to the notion, that if we are able to find the right way to make it work,

Community Crowds gathered at Gyro Park in Trail last week for an environmentally conscious event: releasing young white sturgeon into the Columbia River. Run by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program and BC Hydro, the program’s goal is to reintroduce the fish back into the ecosystem with the hope that in 20 to 25 years, they will begin to reproduce on their own. The group is traveling all over the area repeating the process and growing the endangered white sturgeon population in places like Creston and Revelstoke. Photo by Liz Bevan
