Searching through the rubble Mission firefighters return from Nepal Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Sammy barked excitedly at a pile of rubble in Katmandu. The way the three-year-old Lab bounced around told her handler, Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson, that there was somebody alive under the collapsed building. The discovery gave the rescue team hope that lives could still be saved after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal three days earlier on April 25. When the men carefully dug through the debris, they uncovered the source of the live scent Sammy picked up. It was a chicken, still in its crate. Watkinson and Mission Fire/Rescue Captain Norm MacLeod, along with their specially trained dogs, Sammy and Scribbles, were part of a 24-member team made up of firefighters, doctors, nurses and search and rescue experts from around the Lower Mainland and Valley that travelled to the Asian country to help with rescue efforts. The area was dusty, hot and humid. Flies were everywhere, and the smell of garbage lingered in the streets as people burned trash. Dressed in boots, helmets and coveralls, Watkinson and MacLeod led their dogs through 12 square kilometres of Katmandu looking for earthquake victims still trapped in buildings. There were a total of three dogs on the team, and each one searched an area with their handler before another arrived later to confirm any findings. In addition to the dogs, the team also carried special sound equipment that could detect the slightest scratching under the surface. “Our job was to assess the risk and search the piles of rubble in the area,” said Watkinson. If the team found someone alive, they were to dig them CONTINUED ON 3

Hatzic proposal faces opposition Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Hundreds of people oppsoe a proposal to develop single family lots on two properties totalling almost 14 acres in Hatzic. More than 500 signatures were collected

on three petitions, and many more residents attended a public hearing at Hatzic Secondary School last week. The two subject properties are located at 8455 and 8502 McTaggart Street. Local developers Gary

Toor and Jason Tiegen have submitted an application to subdivide the lands on behalf of the owners, Colin and Catharine Jack, Mil-Kai Investments Ltd., and Kartar Holdings Ltd. The properties could be split into 61 residen-

tial lots with a minimum area of 7,200 square feet, but the lot configurations are still conceptual. The area is designated for urban residential development in the Official Community Plan and is considered

out, but bodies were noted and left in place for another team to recover, unless they were easily accessible. The Canadians didn’t find anyone alive, but located so many cadavers that Watkinson eventually lost count. They combed the capital, street by street, for six days, marking their findings on a map with GPS locations, and submitting the information to the United Nations. A recovery team with heavy machinery would be brought in later. “It was like a maze on the back of kids’ menus,” said Watkinson. “The majority of the buildings, about 90 per cent, had damage. Not all were completely destroyed, but a lot were. “A seven-storey building was flattened like a pancake,” said MacLeod. But despite the damage, locals were still living inside the buildings. “They’re risking their lives,” said Watkinson. “But they have nowhere to go.” The team of Canadians slept in tents

“completing of filling in” an established neighbourhood by city planners. Speakers opposed to the project were concerned about increased traffic and crime, and a lack of sidewalks and services. Some spoke about the unique characteristics of Hatzic they would like preserved, and said they didn’t want a high-density development like Cedar Valley. Retired RCMP inspector Richard Konarski, who lives in the neighbourhood, said he was surprised a traffic study did not recommend measures to improve vehicle movement. He suggested, at the very least, a left turn lane should be put in place at the end of Dewdney

Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson said his dog Sammy was a big hit with the children, SHAUN MADIGAN PHOTO who weren’t used to such a friendly canine. outside a military base after discovering the hotel they were suppose to stay in had also been damaged. The group also spent a day searching a remote village about three hours outside Katmandu, after they heard 70 people were trapped inside a church. There were just 17 people there, but no survivors. The residents of Nepal were resourceful and helped as much as they could. “They all knew each other,” recalled Watkinson. “Some will tell us if everyone was accounted for in one building, but they’d tell us another building still

has missing people.” The team worked from daybreak until dusk. The information the locals offered helped searchers determine where to focus resources. “We were there to work and to work hard,” said Watkinson, noting the UN declared the task a recovery mission on the day they returned. Everywhere they went, locals followed. They were intrigued with the work being done and hopeful that survivors would be found. And they were also interested in the dogs. Most dogs in Nepal are street animals and resi-

dents don’t bond with them. Once people realized Sammy and Scribbles were safe and friendly, they piled on top of them with hugs and kisses, said Watkinson, noting the pets provided emotional support for search crews as well as locals. Watkinson and MacLeod acknowledged the week was exhausting, but say they would do it again in a heartbeat. “When we are asked to do something like this, we do it because it’s what we’re proud to do,” said Watkinson. “We’re proud to represent Mission.”

Trunk Road where it meets Highway 7. Debbie Schmidt, whose property borders the first phase of the development, asked that speed bumps be installed near Hatzic Park to slow traffic and a fence constructed to give her privacy. In a letter to the district, David Jack, whose family owns Ferncliff Gardens, said he never expected this many homes would be proposed for the area when the family farm was sold. He noted his family still lives in the family house east of the properties, and hopes to continue operating a specialized dahlia farm, which is now in its 95th year. Some people supported the develop-

ment, including Wilson Seig, who spoke about how the entire area used to be strawberry fields but past councils had a vision to grow the community and build houses in the area. In a letter in favour of the development, John Tait said the area is “beautiful” and considered the location to be prime real estate in Mission. The developers are planning to build in two phases. Twenty-five single family residential lots would be created in the first phase, and up to 36 lots could be accommodated in the second. Mission council will review minutes of the meeting before deciding whether to advance the proposal.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Cracking down on drivers

The unofficial start to summer has arrived as thousands of B.C.ers will hit the road this May long weekend to go camping, visit relatives or just leave their homes to enjoy some leisure time in the (hopefully) sunny weather. But all that excitement to “get away” means thousands more cars on the road. The May long weekend is notorious for seeing an increase in traffic accidents, some with fatal consequences. ICBC stats indicate that, on average, 340 people are injured in 1,100 crashes throughout the Lower Mainland – including Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley – every year over the Victoria Day long weekend. Provincially, on average, two people are killed and 490 injured during the three-day weekend. With these stats in mind, police are kicking off an enforcement blitz, beginning today, to try and prevent a tragic incident and cut down on

high-risk driving habits. While impaired driving is a concern, many collisions are caused by smaller errors in judgment. Failing to yield the right-of-way, speeding, unsafe lane changes, tailgating and ignoring traffic control devices are all contributors to accidents. According to ICBC 43 per cent of all crashes in B.C. are a result of failing to yield, and 60 per cent of all crashes happen at intersections. Here in Mission, Project Swoop takes place on the Lougheed Highway as RCMP officers focus on cracking down on drivers who display these bad habits. Police will be handing out tickets to drivers who break the rules of the road. A fine is a small price to pay if it helps prevent a fatal collision. The weekend is supposed to be a fun time – drive slow, drive safe and come home alive. If the statistics hold true, two B.C.ers won’t this weekend.

Is a municipal tax increase of 1.36 per cent reasonable? To answer, go to the home page of our website: www.missioncityrecord.com

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you believe the Fraser Institute’s annual study is a legitimate way to rank B.C. schools? Here’s how you responded:

Is the Orange Tsunami headed west? Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Albertans have always laughed about their long-standing reputation as a reckless, immature society. The classic bumper sticker, now available as a T-shirt or coffee cup in several variations, states: “Please God, give us one more oil boom, we promise not to p--- it away this time.” Now they’ve thrown out the government that finally tried to stop blowing money like a roughneck fresh out of the bush. Jim Prentice had the gall to propose raising income taxes for high wage earners, doing away with former Alberta treasurer Stockwell Day’s signature flat tax. In response, voters have abruptly replaced the 44-year Progressive Conservative dynasty with an upstart NDP that wants to tax the rich and corporations even more. Facing an oil slump, layoffs and a huge structural deficit in Alberta’s lavish public service, NDP premier-elect

Rachel Notley is committed to a 50 per cent increase in the minimum wage and another “review” of resource royalties. One headline in a national paper summed it up: “Go home, Alberta. You’re drunk.” In the sober days after the election, a few truths emerge. Alberta hasn’t been a fiscally conservative, small-government place for a long time. Among other things, it has ratcheted up teacher and nurse wages across the country. Alberta is broke, again, and even the NDP is afraid to resort to a sales tax. The minimum wage hike is a pet policy of Canada’s labour federations, which somehow remain convinced that poverty can be eliminated by state order. On the positive side, Notley has promised to end corporate and union donations to political parties, as has already been done federally. B.C. should be next, but the gravy train of business donations is too tempting for our nominally Liberal government. Here at the B.C. legislature, an NDP staffer passed out cans of Orange Crush to celebrate. NDP leader John Horgan pronounced himself “ecstatic,” and hastened to assure reporters that Notley is “as competent as she sounds.”

Notley now has to sort through a caucus that includes typical NDP place-holders, college students and union staff running in faint-hope constituencies. Soon after the result, the party pulled down its website platform and candidate biographies, as Notley began phoning energy companies to reassure them Alberta will be “A-OK” on her watch.

Alberta hasn’t been a fiscally conservative, smallgovernment place for a long time. Horgan likes to describe the “capital flight” from new NDP governments as if it’s just a show put on by big business. Plummeting stock prices and relocation of corporate offices are all staged, according to the party line, nothing to do with actual investment conditions created by NDP pol-

icies. This fiction is all Horgan dares to say publicly, because it’s what his party base devoutly believes. Besides, they’re only branch offices of multinational oil companies like Shell, Horgan said. He used his favourite Tommy Douglas quote, about the bad news of a big oil company leaving. “The good news is, the oil is staying here.” B.C.’s natural gas might be staying here too. Horgan insists he supports a natural gas export industry, but his party seems more concerned with an ascending Green Party, and an urban base that believes you can run a resource economy on windmills and solar panels. Notley supports twinning the TransMountain pipeline, while Horgan continues to insist he has no opinion on the project Adrian Dix so memorably opposed. The Alberta NDP has a steep learning curve ahead. The B.C. NDP has a couple of years to see if the appearance of a likeminded Alberta government is a boost for them, or a cautionary tale for voters. YOUR VIEWS

Bureaucracy can be a pleasant experience Most letters about government departments are, unfortunately, complaints of one sort or another. This was definitely not my experience when my husband and I went to renew my driver’s licence. We found the location, parked, and entered to find it filled with patrons and a line-up. I looked for a place to take a number, but none was apparent. While in the queue, a woman behind the counter beckoned me to come forward and asked the nature of my business. She quickly gave me a number and sent me to counter 10. There, a pleasant young woman asked for my ID, old licence, and my CareCard. After quickly checking my address and my mother’s maiden name, she had me sign a form, pay $17, (which

I did with my credit card), and then step over to the gray screen to have my photo taken. After two takes, one of which was quite reasonable, we were on our way out the door. The whole process took about seven minutes, and we were amazed as we walked to our car. That wasn’t the end of it. The young woman, named Liz, came out and returned my wallet which I had left on her counter. I have never seen such pleasant efficiency in any bureaucracy, and I noted that there were only women working there. I wonder if all government departments should be staffed by women. My kudos to that crew! Diana Jewell Mission

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation. Without Audéo V

With Audéo V

The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.

New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to

is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

MISSION RECORD

Mission taxpayers will pay 1.36 per cent more in municipal tax. Council approved the 2015 budget and tax increase at a special meeting on Monday. The impact of the 1.36 per cent increase on the average Mission homeowner (based on a house valued at $390,500) will be $24.64. Council also approved a two-percent increase to water and sewer fees which should increase the average homeowners bill by $16.71 for a total increase of $41.35 this year. “I think the budget is fair,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. “We are quite happy with 1.36 per cent,

particularly considering there are three new policemen in that mix.” Hawes said council wanted the increase to stay within the Vancouver Price Index (1.1 per cent). “This is just slightly over. But for future years we want to stay within that if we can. That’s our target.” Hawes said when council looked at services cuts that are needed in order to reach a zero-per-cent increase, it didn’t make sense to council members. “All that kind of thing does is put you farther behind in future years ... If your whole target is financial, there is only one thing that suffers and that’s lifestyle.”

Michelle Hillier has been named “Mission Optimist Mother of the Year” by the local Optimist Club. Hillier was selected after her daughter, Aryanna, a student at Mission Central school, wrote a short essay on why her mother deserves the award. More than 500 elementary school students participated in the challenge. Optimist Club director Dick Brodie presented Hillier with a gift basket and flowers this past weekend on Mother’s Day. MISSION RECORD

Local athlete Liz Janze loves speed. As a child, she raced down ski hills and delighted in being the first to reach the bottom. So, it was no surprise when Janze joined the Mission Racers speed skating club seven years ago at the age of 14. Her experience with skis helped her adapt to the long skate blades and in no time, she was ready to take her training to the next level. “(Coaches) Bruce Wenting and Derrick Ross gave me the introductory steps,” said the 21-year-old Janze, who will always remember it was those first steps that started her journey to becoming a high performance athlete. Janze later joined the club in Matsqui to get more ice time to help her advance her goals. There are so many emotions with it, said Janze about the sport. She often raced others as well as herself for personal best times.

She reached a national performance level and competed against the country’s best in Montreal in 2012. It was her first and last nationals. Janze moved to Calgary the following year to continue her high performance training at the Olympic Oval, and it was there she fell in love with another sport, bobsleigh. “Bobsleigh chose me,”

said Janze, who is also studying community rehabilitation and disability studies at the University of Calgary. Janze had met a professional bobsledder who invited her to try it out. “My first run down the track was a bit of a rough ride, but I knew I had to give the sport another try.” Operating as the brakeman, Janze pushed the sled 10 more times down the track, reaching speeds of 130 km/h.

She thought she’d be scared, but she thrived on the challenge. “It made me want to set another goal,” she said. “How much faster can I go?” It didn’t take long for Janze to realize she was hooked and in a short while, she changed her focus. Now she is setting her sights on being a part of the provincial and national bobsleigh team. She is beginning a movement called From

Mission on a Mission to inspire local youth, engage community groups about becoming a high performance athlete, and to raise funds for her training. “Sponsorship is important because it helps me achieve my goal,” said Janze, acknowledging the support she has already received from the Mission community to get to where she is today. “A lot of these skills I didn’t learn on my own. I had coaches and community volunteers support me and now I want to give back.” She plans to give back to the community by talking to groups about balancing education with high-performance hobbies, goal-setting, and how to pursue a passion in life, in hopes of inspiring others. Janze has teamed up with the new crowdfunding platform BlackPress4Good.com to raise awareness and funds. For information about Janze or to support her mission, visit http://fnd.us/c/ena70.

Diversity ride kicks off Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

It’s been five years since Ken Herar began his Cycling4Diversity ride in Mission. The annual event has grown steadily since it began in 2011. This year, the ride will go through the Okanagan as well as the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Herar and his team of riders will begin on Tuesday, May 19 in Kamloops and then make stops in Vernon, Kelowna, Pent-

icton and Merritt. Then, from May 21-22, the riders will visit Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, White Rock and Langley. The ride wraps up May 22, in Abbotsford, with a public gathering at 4 p.m. at the Sikh temple. “The temple has generously donated food for the event,” said Herar. “Anybody is welcome to join us from 4 to 5 p.m. and celebrate our diversity here in the Fraser Valley.” While the ride began

in Mission, Herar decided not to come here this year, in favour of new areas. As part of the ride, a team of 16 to 20 cyclists (depending on the day) take part in the event, which has frequent stops at local schools to speak about diversity “It’s not about how many people, it’s about the message. We speak at schools for about 20 minutes to a half hour. Every member of the team speaks for a few minutes about their

message. This year’s event features 16 talks at various schools “We encourage students, adults, seniors everyone to make a special effort to be inclusive with each other in their neighbourhoods, work place, sports teams, and let’s eliminate racism.” Mission Council, along with the province, has proclaimed May 17-23, 2015 as Cycling4Diversity Week. A RESPONSE TO GOD’S QUESTION In the Bible, Our Lord asks Peter a question: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” (Mark 8:29) How would we have answered the same question? Would our response be something like, “You are the Christ, the Risen Lord. You are my God, my Lord, my Savior, my King, and my All. You are my last thought before falling off to sleep at night and my first thought at waking in the morning. You are the peace that allows me to take each little cross that comes my way and understand that is all in your plan of salvation for me, and that all of my worrying about such things will do little to help the situation. You are who I live for; because, if I am not living for You, then my life is totally and completely worthless and without any more meaning or significance than a blade of grass that will be dead and gone by the end of the summer. You are the One that I talk to all throughout the day when I am burdened with worries and troubles, or when I am happy.” We could go on and on about who Jesus should be, but it really comes down to who we should be, and how we should be living our lives. We should take the necessary actions to put God first in our lives, which simply means that we should at least begin and end our days with prayer, and start to listen more clearly to what God wants of us.

Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. - N.I.V. Psalm 9:10

Trail repairs Mission selects new CAO completed

New improvements to the Hayward Reservoir Trail have been completed just in time for the 2015 hiking season. With the assistance of BC Hydro staff at Hayward Lake, over 18 bridges and structures were completely rebuilt using Fraser Regional Corrections work crews. Difficulty accessing the trail between the four and eight kilometre marks meant, lumber, supplies, and crews needed to be brought in by boat. A total of $5,000 in provincial funding from Rec Sites and Trails BC assisted in purchasing rough cut cedar used in the bridge decking. Replacing all the decking and railings at once now allows for plan-

ning for replacement requirements rather than approaching maintenance on a piece-meal basis. Other improvements include minor rerouting of over-steepened sections, improved water control and surfacing. Originally opened in 1998, the trail is suitable for families and provides the ability to hike for short distances to spectacular Steelhead Falls as well as longer hikes, particularly once construction is completed at the Ruskin Dam site in the future. To access the trail, park at the BC Hydro Reservoir Trail parking lot, just 0.5 km west of the Municipal Landfill on Dewdney Trunk Road.

Ron Poole has been named as Mission’s new chief administrative officer. Poole, who is currently serving as CAO for the District of Kitimat, will begin his new post on June 11.

“Ron Poole’s experience and expertise are perfectly aligned with many of our major projects and initiatives,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. Poole has a proven track record of exem-

Judging has begun & Nominees are eagerly awaiting the results! Thank you for nominating your favourite businesses around town! Business Excellence Nominees have been busy preparing their answers for the Awards judging panel and rallying the community to vote before the close of day May 19. last year with over 3,000 votes registered. But the community is only one of the nine voices that will determine this year’s recipients. The next phase of judging will evaluate each nominee against the criteria for the award. Information nominees provide plus the testimonials

from their nominations and site visits are considered. This year’s judges include past award recipients, events committee members and Chamber directors. While nominees prepare, show your support and encouragement. Look for the “Nominated” sticker at their business.

Support your favourite businesses! Come celebrate and connect at the Business Excellence Awards on Thursday June 11 at The Stage. Tickets are $65. To purchase tickets contact the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce 604-826-6914

Spotlight on Business: Mission Health Care Auxiliary: 95 years of so much more than knitted baby sweaters Kathleen Rake

CLICK MEDIA WORKS

“I’d sure like people to know what we really do,” says Alyce Campbell, vice-president of Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society (MHCA). “Sure, we have volunteers who knit and crochet gifts for baby, but we do so much more—and we’ve been doing more for 95 years.” MHCA and its volunteers help support health care in Mission by raising money to provide equipment and services, such as specialty equipment for use in the hospital; medical equipment loans (walkers, crutches, etc.) to residents for use at home; the emergency clothing cupboard at the hospital; bursaries; and activities and fun outings for people who live at The Residence in Mission (TRIM).

See the fundraising work in action when you shop at The Cottage Thrift Shop downtown or the gift shop at Mission Memorial Hospital, where there are women’s fashions and accessories in addition to the traditional gift-shop goodies. “Every time someone donates to or shops at The Cottage or buys something from the hospital gift shop,” explains Campbell, “they help us with resources to fund more services and equipment.” Of course, no organization grows strong for 95 years without great volunteers. “We currently have 124 fabulous volunteers, who each put in a couple of shifts a month throughout our numerous services, but we sure could use more,” says Wendy Matus,

MHCA president. And while she acknowledges MHCA needs volunteers for every corner of the organization, she says they have a special need for someone to “step forward and volunteer to help us keep our website current—maybe a high-school or UFV student.” Campbell adds there are educational opportunities as an MHCA volunteer. “And we always find time to have fun!” For more information or to volunteer, contact Campbell at 604-8202796 or jac02@shaw.ca, or Matus at 604-826-0003 or wmatus1@telus. net. the TDI cruised effortlessly at over 120 km/h. After a lunch break of traditional paella, the group headed out again into the canyons and rugged landscape – very similar to Utah – with carved cliffs. The most memorable part was the smell of wild Rosemary bushes and the wild Jasmine filling the air. Not just a hint, rather a wonderful aroma that occupied the entire valley floor. As we pulled into Malaga after 12 hours behind the wheel of the 2015 Touareg, I have come to appreciate it all over again. This is a premium VW offering, starting at $53,965. The TDI is the one to get. Not that the regular gasoline is a bad choice; rather, the TDI diesel is a better choice. The TDI version delivers amazing power; it uses up to 25 per cent less fuel and has amazing resale value. The 2015 model gets a slight facelift, so slight I’d have a hard time pointing out the changes, but this SUV is about what it can do, not how flashy it is. If you would like to find out more about taking part in your own VW adventure, go to www-volkswagen-driving-adventure.de to find out more. Highlander big for bigger families

by Bob McHugh

Toyota introduced a completely redesigned and more upscale Highlander in 2008 (its mid-sized utility vehicle) that was bigger with three rows of seating, more powerful and more expensive. Bad timing, as that very same year the world`s economy took an unexpected and spectacular nosedive, which sparked a major consumer trend to scale down. This model offers has a more rounded shape with pronounced wheel arches and there’s a flip-open rear door window. It`s a handy feature that allows you to drop stuff into the cargo area without opening the large rear door. The V6 engine versions of Highlander came with four-wheel-drive plus extra goodies like a back-up camera, a power driver’s seat and fog lamps. Above base, the higher trim levels were Sport, Limited and SR5 (only for 2008).

Reacting to the new economic reality, in an impressively quick way, Toyota introduced a substantially lower priced and more basic, frontdrive Highlander, midway through the ’09 model year. It came with two-row seating and a 2.7 litre 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine can provide 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm and its city/highway fuel economy rating is 11.8 / 8.7 L/100km. Highlander is a ‘Top Safety Pick’ according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, based on its front, side and rear crash tests. Highlander was included in a series of safety recalls (see list), including the famous “floor mat recall”, in response to mysterious defect that supposedly caused unintended acceleration. No changes were made to the 2010 Highlander, but for 2011, it got revised front and rear styling, with slimmer headlights, a new front grille and new taillights. The Sport model was discontinued and the hybrid version

got a (combined 280 horsepower) 3.5L V6. A third-row seat also became standard on all models. No significant changes were made for the 2012 or 2013 model years, which were the last of this generation Highlander. The completely revised 2014 Highlander, a sleeker family-friendly seven passenger cross utility, recorded its best year ever. A comfortable and secure all-weather family cruiser, the Toyota Highlander is a low risk purchase with a history of solid reliability and excellent resale value retention.

McLEAN, Phyllis June June 21, 1926 - May 10, 2015 It is with much sorrow that we celebrate the passing of our remarkable Aunt Phyllis. She passed peacefully in her sleep after fighting a lung infection for a week. She is predeceased by her 5 siblings and is survived by her sister-in-laws, Pauline and Lena McLean as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her life was spent serving others: first as a teacher in Northern Alberta, and later in response to the call of the Lord as a missionary in tributaries of the Amazon River for over two decades. She retired to Abbotsford after finishing her time in Brazil and became active in the Abbotsford Baptist Church. There will be a memorial service celebrating Phyllis’ life starting with a visitation at 10:00am at Society’s First Alternative, 3070 - 275A Street, Aldergrove, B.C., and then a graveside memorial service at Hazelwood Cemetery lead by Pastor Murray Archibald beginning at 1:30pm. There will be a small reception to follow at the Abbotsford Baptist Church, 33651 Busby Rd., Abbotsford, B.C. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to either the Abbotsford Baptist

Church or her former mission, Crossworld.org

DAVID LORNE GOWLER November 21, 1921 – May 9, 2015

The father we shared: From his humble roots in rural Manitoba, raising his 3 kids in Sapperton, New Westminster, and spending his last 13 years in Langley, our Dad has died. A kind, generous, fun loving, humble, sensitive, hardworking, curious kind of guy you could rely on. Always ready to help family, friends and neighbours with his practical handyman abilities, charm and sense of humour. Dave was a lifelong learner whose curious adventurous nature provided much fodder for storytelling. He was known to talk to anyone about anything and made friends easily. He was extremely proud to have served overseas with the Westminster Regiment in WWII. Dave worked at the BC Pen for 33 years from 1947-1980; his stories could curl your toes! He was devoted and married to his bride, Myrtle Thompson, for 66 years. She predeceased him last year in May. He was a gracious and charming host, famous for his ‘412 Specials’ served at their home on numerous social occasions and Christmas Eve open house events. Dave and Myrt spent 16 years wintering in Palm Springs and made many steadfast friends. They loved to dance and were a joy to watch as they waltzed across a ballroom floor beaming at each other. Dave was an enthusiastic BC Lion’s fan and shared his fervour of football and hockey with his sons and grandsons. He loved to ‘putter’ and care for his home and garden while listening to music. Drawn to the ocean he sport-fished, crabbed and clammed at Boundary Bay and once caught a 36 lb spring salmon. Dave was the original ‘foodie’, this passion for experimenting with food he passed down to us all. He enjoyed solving the world’s problems in his hot tub with family and friends. He played golf and remained as active as he could all his life. Dave, a dedicated involved 50’s style of Dad to Alan (Sandra), Lana (Roger), and Keith (Eileen), was the father to us that he never had. He loved and was proud of his Grandkids – Joanna, Sheri, Kurtis and Kyle. He always had a sparkle in his eye to see his GG kids – Stephan, Randy, Kayla, Paige and Avalee. He also delighted in spoiling his fur grandkids with endless biscuits. He is loved and will be missed madly by all of us! Although he has requested no service, to celebrate Dave please listen to music, share food and drink and tell stories with the ones you love. Thank you to the staff at Langley Lodge who has cared for him with compassion and kindness the last 4 years. Dad, ‘you did it your way’, as much as Mom would let you!
