VICTORIA DAY CAMPING
Patrols at Lake Koocanusa bolstered for long weekend CRANBROOK – Extra enforcement will be taking place at Lake Koocanusa throughout the Victoria Day long weekend in an effort to keep the popular recreation area safe and clean, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett announced Wednesday. The multi-agency strategy is aimed at eliminating acts of vandalism on Crown land along the lake, where partiers from Alberta and B.C. caused extensive damage during last year’s Victoria Day weekend. “The enforcement efforts planned for the long weekend will help discourage unruly be-
haviour and promote a fun and safe environment for residents and visitors,” Bennett said. “I want to assure residents and people who use Lake Koocanusa that we will not put up with a repeat of the mess and destruction of property made by vandals last year.” The co-ordinated enforcement campaign will involve RCMP, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Ministry of Environment. Enhanced RCMP patrols will be complemented by natural resource officers from the Ministry
of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the Ministry of Environment’s B.C. Conservation Officer Service. Additionally, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has reached an agreement with the Regional District of East Kootenay that will see natural resource officers provide enhanced patrols at Lake Koocanusa throughout the summer and fall. The public is reminded that violations can be reported to the Natural Resource Violation reporting line at 1-844-NRO-TIPS (1-844-676-8477).
Hockey Academy City looking to bring hockey school to Kimberley C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Mayor Don McCormick shared at Council this past Monday evening that Kimberley was in the process of trying to secure a Women’s Hockey Academy’s relocation to the City. The Academy is currently located in Warner, Alberta, and its coach and director
of hockey operations is former NHLer Mikko Makela. “They are looking to move it here,” McCormick said. “He was here touring facilities.” The school has about 25 students, all young women aged 14 to 18. They would use Kimberley as a base for training and take part in a Canada/US league. However, McCormick says that the process of securing the school for Kimberley has run into a few snags. One of the issues is accommodation. See HOCKEY, page 4

Remembering ‘one of the best libraries’ in the province T here must have been some smiles that day. Some well earned grins amongst the small yet celebratory crowd. A match was struck. A document was set alight. The people cheered. Fire is the bane of libraries everywhere, but this one, set in the fall of 1975, was special. This one consumed a mortgage document, one the Cranbrook Public Library had just paid off. Besides being debt free, this year also marked the 50th anniversary of Library. The year before, BC’s Library Chairman had stated “it was one of the best libraries in the entire province.” This had been no easy thing. Since its inception in 1925, the Library mirrored the steady growth of Cranbrook itself. When its original site at the Old Post Office became unmanageable, it relocated to larger Provincial Government building in
1958. Unfortunately this site was too small almost immediately, and by 1962 the Library was seriously overcrowded. A new Library Building Project Committee was (once again) formed to investigate alternatives. Meanwhile, the Library was now open 6 days a week from 1:30 to 6:00 pm, with the exception of Tuesdays and Saturdays when it stayed open until 9:30 pm. Talk of being open 7 days per week was discussed, but this would not occur for another 50 years. Much of the actual library work had to be done in the morning, as it was simply impossible to do much of anything when open. Besides books and serial publications, the Library now began to collect films from the National Film Board of Canada. A projector was also available for loan, but one had to demonstrate a working knowl-

Mike Selby edge of it before it could be checked out. The World Book Encyclopedia was now available for patrons, although someone walked off with volumes “A” and “B” in 1964. While overdue books are common and expected, theft of books another thing altogether. A series of the Harvard Classics and a copy of Chute’s ‘Shakespeare of London’ had been checked out by someone unwilling to return them (they eventually did, although months had gone by). This was nothing to a
case in the early 70s, when a Library member blatantly refused to return a series of costly books they had borrowed, and did so “in the rudest of terms.” The Library was forced to take the member to small claims court, where the Judge ordered the person’s wage to be garnished. By 1966 the Library had 88, 282 items in circulation, with 1605 adult members and 3232 juvenile members. Just over 500 books were in use by the local schools, as were the Film Board movies. Teachers of all grades continued to bring their classes to the library, who were instructed in proper library use techniques. Yet even without a class of 20 to 30 students, most days the Library was standing room only. Unfortunately, Cranbrook’s Mayor at the time appeared unsympathetic. His solution was to dissolve the Li-

brary altogether, and to let the public schools handle the city’s reading material. No one else on the City Council agreed with this idea (a logistical nightmare at best), and the push for a new library building continued. On August 24th, 1970, a new mayor (he he) turned the first sod at Balment Park, future home of the Cranbrook Public Library. June 19th, 1971, was the day the Library opened its doors to its very own building. A majestic totem pole was built to commemorate the site which had been a significant meeting place of our First Nation ancestors. Prime Minister Trudeau was scheduled to tour the Library on opening day (it remains unknown if he did—no one recorded whether he was there or not).

made their first appearance during the 70s. Children’s Story-time became so popular it was soon overrun, and had to be divided into separate times. The Canadian Nursing Association, Selkirk College, School District Five, the Cranbrook Archives, and the Cranbrook Playschool all occupied sections of the Library. Even the Cranbrook Boxing Club requested use of part of the Library to train in, but this was vetoed due to noise considerations. By the time the mortgage was burned, it truly was one of the best public libraries in the province, if not Western Canada. Then again, it always had been. A brand new building—what could go wrong? Almost immediately, the newly laid carpet began to wrinkle and curl. The outside lights worked haphazardly, and after the first light rain the windows leaked around the edges. After the first heavy rain, every car became stuck in the gravel—now mud— parking lot. That mud also ruined what was left of the wrinkled carpet, which really took a beating in 1973 when the Library became completely flooded. The flood was a combination of a leaky roof and city piping. But all that is simply housekeeping. The new building brought an incredible increase in both adult and juvenile memberships. A Children’s Library was created, as was a separate Reference section. National Nursing Week is May 11-17. This year’s theme is “Nurses: with you every step of the way.” What comes to your mind when you think of a nurse? Do you know what nurses do? Interior Health employs approximately 300 registered nurses and almost 120 licensed practical nurses just in the Cranbrook/Kimberley area. Three nurse practitioner positions are also dedicated to supporting patient care in our area. In Canada, there are almost 300,000 registered nurses and nurse practitioners; 75,000 Licensed practical nurses; and 5,600 Registered Psychiatric Nurses. Each of these groups is accountable to their respective provincial li-

censing body and has its own scope of practice. This means that they adhere to high professional standards of practices and codes of ethics. With the exception of Quebec, Registered Nurses must complete a four-year university degree, registered psychiatric nurses complete a minimum of a two-year diploma program, and licensed practical nurses now complete a two-year program. Nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists must complete their nursing degree and a master’s degree and complete a rigorous competency process. In addition to their entry-level education, many nurses complete additional educational programs and degrees. Nurses who work in specialty settings (such as intensive care, emergency, and maternity to name a few) may require additional education and training. If you require health care services in BC, you will encounter nurses. In Cranbrook alone, nurses work in varied settings, both within Interior Health and for other agencies and or-
ganizations. They are employed in residential care, community programs, aboriginal health, public health, and hospital settings. Nurses practice in five major areas of responsibility: direct care (including preventive care), education, administration, research, and policy. They make a difference every single day. Nurses provide highly skilled assessments and interventions that improve the quality of care you receive, reduce the risk of an adverse event, and improve health outcomes. Nurses promote healthy living, assist in chronic disease prevention and management, and facilitate the transition throughout the health care system. Nurses work with people and support their families throughout the life cycle. Every day, nurses encounter situations that are happy, miraculous, challenging, sad, and truly heartbreaking. Nurses make a difference and will work with you, support you, advocate for you, and care for you every step of the way.

Although there are many who disagree with the whole concept of the Fraser Institute report card on schools, it has nonetheless been released again. Selkirk Secondary in Kimberley continues its steady climb up the rankings, this year being rated 76th out of 289 secondary schools in the province. Last year, Selkirk ranked 79th. The Fraser Institute gives it a ranking of 7.2 out of 10. Average exam marks have risen to 70.3 per cent in 2014 from 67.7 per cent in 2010. However, the Fraser Institute warns that re-
sults for small schools tend to be more variable than do those for larger schools and caution should be used in interpreting the results for smaller schools. Selkirk’s Grade 12 enrollment was only 62 when the numbers were recorded. However, other small schools in the District; David Thompson in Invermere and Golden Secondary, are further down the rankings. David Thompson ranks 193rd out of 289 with a 5.2 out of ten; and Golden 209th out of 289 and a 5 out of ten. The Overall rating out of 10 takes into account the indica-
tors Average exam mark, Percentage of exams failed, School vs exam mark difference, Gender gaps, graduation rate and Delayed advancement rate described above to answer the question, “In general, how is the school doing academically compared to other schools in the Report Card?” As is usual, private schools head the list of the best high schools in British Columbia such as York House in Vancouver, which was ranked number one. The complete rankings can be found here http:// www.compareschoolrankings.org/
Women’s Hockey Academy looking at Kimberley From Page 1 The school would prefer a dormitory style set up, and McCormick said that Kimberley didn’t really have that sort of thing to offer, although he thought that working with local accommodators, something could be worked out. However, the other snag is education costs for out-of-province students. “Most of the girls are from Alberta and would have to pay extra fees to SD6,” McCormick. Those fees are no
small change — being approximately $7,000 per student on top of the tuition for the school. “The bottom line is we’ve run out of time for this year,” he said. “So the effort is to focus on next year, or if they decide to go somewhere else, we will look for something similar. “It’s a great idea. It gets our facilities used and takes advantage of Kimberley’s hockey heritage. The goal of academies like these is scholarships. That’s why the education piece is so important.”

New City grant policy Thanks to Royal Canadian Legions From Page 1 “It is the policy of the City of Kimberley to consider, within its financial capacity, financial support to community organizations within the City,” the preamble states. “This support is provided in recognition of the value these organizations provide to the well-being and vibrancy of the community and in helping the City retain a strong community focus. The City recognizes that supporting volunteer community-based organizations is fundamental to maintaining our quality of life. The goal of this policy is to establish open and transparent guidelines for the evaluation and distribution of C o m mu n i t y Grants.” One of the things the policy did was to
reduce the number of standing grants to three organizations. Standing grants go to what the City considers core community groups. These grants are given for general operating expenses. The three groups will not have to reapply each year for the grants. The recipients of yearly standing grants, with a yearly 1.5 per cent increase for inflation are: • Kimberley Arts Council (2015 Grant $25,375) • Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce In Kind (2015 Grant $9,310) • Kimberley District Heritage Society (2015 Grant $23,812) It was on the issue of standing grants that the one dissenting vote on the new policy came. Coun. Bev Middlebrook voted against

it.
“I believe the standing grants should include the Youth Centre, as they have for years,” Middlebrook said. “It’s likely that in the future other groups will be added to the standing grants, depending on the robustness of their boards and what’s happening,” said Goodwin. “A great amount of work went into this policy,” said Coun. Darryl Oakley. “It provides clarity.” Under the policy, all other grants, such as discretionary, personal travel grants, in-kind grants and project/event grants can be applied for throughout the year, but these grants have access to a limited amount of funds.
Cranbrook, BC… The opportunity doesn’t come very often but for EKFH Chair Brian Clifford and Donna Grainger, Executive Director the chance to say thanks and address the attendees of the Zone Conference of Royal Canadian Legion recently held in Cranbrook was an honour. “When you look over the years the donations to EKFH from the Legions combined is over $85,500 for equipment

and patient comforts that are focused on aiding veterans and their health journey. It is simply astonishing so to address the Zone Conference was a rewarding moment for the founda-
tion,” states Donna Grainger. The majority of the gifting by the Legions is from annual Poppy Fund proceeds. From serving their country to serving their communi-
ty the Royal Canadian Legion continues to be an important part of the history of making a difference in the lives of others.

The path to Jesus means the inclusion of all
H
ave you ever noticed as you read the gospels how often Jesus eats with outcasts? In fact, Jesus did it so often he was accused of being a drunkard and a glutton. For example, “As Jesus sat at dinner in the house many tax–collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.” (Matthew 9:10) In the first century, you didn’t eat with those who weren’t part of your group, or with those who were beneath you. By eating with these outcasts, Jesus proclaimed that they were insiders. They had value and dignity. They were included. That’s why all four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) remember Jesus for this practice. The radical inclusiveness of Jesus was an important part of his total message that God’s kingdom was being put in place, and that God’s way of doing things would overturn human ways. No wonder the authorities of the day were appalled at Jesus’ behaviour. He ate with people who were deemed unworthy and untouchable by both the sacred and secular society of their day. It is very clear that in Jesus’ eyes, everyone is made in the image of God. All people bear the likeness of God. Everyone had worth and dignity before God. When we defame, demean, devaluate, dehumanize, demonize, and discriminate against any human being, we denigrate God’s image or likeness in them; and ultimately, in ourselves as well. Until we begin to see this truth, and begin living it out in our words and actions, we will continue to perpetrate all the ugliness and ungodli-
ness we deplore (or say we do) in the world. The church has too often been guilty of excluding people. We insist they have to believe like us, or behave like us, or think like us if they are to belong. But the example of Jesus shows us that that’s simply not so. All are included, according to Jesus, because all are made in the image of God. Period. End of story. Nothing else counts. It simply doesn’t matter if you believe differently, or think differently, or behave differently. Our ways of believing and our ways of interpreting the sacred texts, or our ways of living out Rev. Yme the faith are not the only Woensdregt valid and viable vehicles of truth. We have to find ways to include others, and become communities of radical inclusion. When we do so, we follow in the way of Jesus who ate with “tax–collectors and sinners”. I am proud to be part of a church which seeks to be broadly welcoming and inclusive. I delight in being part of a church which works hard not to marginalize others. I am pleased to be in a church which understands that we must strive to interpret our sacred texts in the light of centuries of scholarship (both sacred and secular). We understand that the Bible was written in the context of an ancient world view that is different than ours, and we must continue to interpret these ancient writings in ever new ways to find the truth for contemporary society in them. Our sacred texts come from a different world than ours. We can’t treat them as if they are fossilized truth. So we must read
our sacred scriptures with a keen awareness of the differences between the time they were written and our own time. We cannot just understand them with a naïve literalism. We must avail ourselves of the lens of thousands of years of scholarship to help us understand them. The heart of the gospel is the unconditional love Jesus expressed for everyone. The Greek word for that love is “agape”. It is a verb of action and not of feeling. It means to “will the best for others and to do all we can to see that it happens for them”. It is a self–giving love which is willing to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of the other. It is caring, compassion, seeking justice and equality for our brothers and sisters. One of the practical results of this is that I will be proud to be with folks from other churches to have a table at Pride Day on May 23rd in Rotary Park. We will be with our LGBTQ brothers and sisters, saying the God’s love is so large that it encompasses everyone, without exception. My column last week was entitled “Finding God in the Park.” Perhaps as we share this time and space together on Saturday, we will find God in the Park. The example of Jesus shows us that whenever we embrace another, we will indeed find God. Whenever we include and welcome another, we will also be welcomed. As Jesus did, we must continue to foster a climate of inclusiveness, knowing that all people have value and dignity as people of God. As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we will, surely, perish together as fools.” Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

The Galbraiths: First on the block What’s Up? T
he Galbraith name has a long and distinguished history in the East Kootenay and is inexorably linked with the town of Fort Steele but the family is also linked to the very wellsprings of Cranbrook. It was John Galbraith and his wife Sarah who were the first white settlers on Joseph’s Prairie and it was they, along with John’s brother Robert, who first laid claim to the land later purchased by James Baker to become present-day Cranbrook. In 1864, John Galbraith came in search of gold along the Wild Horse Creek. It is said he traveled with the first group of miners led by Jack Fisher (for which Fisher Peak is named) but soon realized that the real money was to be found in providing miners with transportation and supplies. His brother Robert, however, states in a Herald newspaper interview of Dec.22, 1904, that by the time John arrived at the Wild Horse “he found the ground all occupied, and therefore turned his attention more in the line of strict business, such as the establishment of a ferry near where Fort Steele bridge is now built.” Either way the result was the same; John Galbraith established what would become the town of Fort Steele. John and Robert were two of the nine children of Alexander and Rose Galbraith, all born in Ireland between the years 1826 to 1849. Of the siblings, three brothers: John, James and Robert Leslie Thomas (often referred to as R.L.T.), and two sisters: Maria, and Catherine (Kate), arrived at Fort Steele by the turn of the twentieth century. John came first, traveling by steamer around the Cape Horn of Africa and landing in San Francisco sometime around 1858. The year 1864 found him in Walla Walla, Washington, and it was from here that he journeyed to the Wild Horse. He set up a ferry business across the Kootenay River which became known as Gailbraith’s Ferry. It was the only practical way to cross the river for the many miners making their way to the gold fields of Wild Horse Creek via the Dewdney Trail and that, combined with his general store and pack trains, soon made him a man of means. He sent for his brothers James and Robert and also for his brothers-in-law James and Charles Clark. The Clark brothers, hailing from Liverpool and engineers by trade, married the Galbraith sisters Maria and Catherine (Kate) respectively and went on to survey much of the local district. John Galbriath met and married Sarah Larue during his time packing supplies from Walla Walla and she, too, joined the Galbraith/Clark clan in the flourishing town of Galbraith’s

Ferry. Both John and his brother Robert purchased land that would later become Cranbrook and John and Sarah took up ranching there about 1867. Wild Horse pioneer Dave Griffith, while visiting Cranbrook in 1901, spoke of the many fine residences on Baker Hill and said that the last time he was in that part of town was 15 years earlier when Mr. and Mrs. John Galbraith were the only ones there and lived in a log hut.
a heavy mortgage on his soon-to-be Cranbrook property. Mr. Beale further states that, until that time, the CPR engineers strongly favoured the Fort Steele route. If that was the case then the people of Cranbrook have Robert Galbraith to thank and the people of Fort Steele have him to blame for the rise of one town and the fall of another. In May, 1904, the government decided to move their offices from Fort Steele to Cranbrook, thus driving an unretractable spike in the coffin of the former town of Gailbraith’s Ferry. Robert Galbraith, perhaps most affected by the change due to his large property holdings in Fort Steele, took a philosophical view, saying, “Such is the fortunes of politics. Government offices are a small thing compared to the undeveloped resources and possibilities of the country.” As to the big picture he was quite correct, but as for Fort Steele it was the beginning of the end. John and Sarah Galbraith, the first settlers of Cranbrook, sold to James Baker in 1884 and retired to Parsons Bridge near Victoria. They are both buried in the Ross Bay Cemetery. Maria Brit Clark (nee Galbraith) died at Fort Steele in 1909, as did her sister Catherine Clark in 1911. Charles Clark drowned in the Kootenany River in 1901, and his brother James died in New Westminster in 1911. Robert “Uncle Bob” Galbraith, the “Grand Old Man of the Kootenays,” at the age of 79, married Ella Fleming, 40 years his junior. Robert died at Fort Steele in 1924, and is buried along with his sisters and his wife in the cemetery there. Ella died in Cranbrook in 1966, after an extended stay in the former Bowness residence, at the time the Gardner Rest Home.
JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron Robert Galbraith arrived in 1870. Aside from his duties with the ferry and the general store, he served as a Member of the B.C. Legislative Assembly from 1877-1886 and served many years as the south-eastern B.C. Indian Agent. Along with his land holdings at Joseph’s Prairie he purchased a great deal of property in and about Fort Steele. It is interesting to note that in September, 1938, M.A. Beale, a real estate and insurance agent who worked in Fort Steele before moving to Cranbrook, stated that he was present at the historic meeting between the CPR representative and Robert Galbraith, held in Tom McVittie’s parlours (Tom McVittie married Robert Galbraith’s niece, Anna) at Fort Steele. Mr. Beale claims that the CPR demanded a share in the Fort Steele townsite which Mr. Galbraith flatly refused to surrender as he held
Grizzly bear activity: Parks Canada closes area in Banff C ANADIAN PRESS
BANFF, Alta. - A grizzly bear has forced the closure of some popular trails on Tunnel Mountain in Banff National Park. Parks Canada officials say the grizzly bluff-charged a hiker who had come upon the bear while it was feeding on a carcass. They say the bear ran out of a bush and came within five meters of the hiker, who was not injured. Conservation specialists have put up closure signs and tape to clearly mark the prohib-
ited area. The trails will remain off limits until the bear wanders off. Anyone caught disobeying the closure faces a fine of up to $25,000. Parks Canada is reminding people to be particularly vigilant as grizzly bears have recently come out of hibernation. This means they are very hungry and focused on finding food. Surprise bear encounters may happen at any time and can lead to defensive behaviour by the animals.

Shoot for the moon Rockets book ticket to Memorial Cup with sweep of Wheat Kings
L arry Fisher Kelowna Daily Courier
On an ominous day in the Okanagan, the clouds parted and Bruce Hamilton beamed. His work — and that of the players he cast on a talent-laden roster — had paid off, with the Kelowna Rockets completing an improbable sweep of the regular-season champion Brandon Wheat Kings. Capped by Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Prospera Place in front of 6,428 broom-wielding fans, the Rockets lifted the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL playoff champions — for the fourth time in franchise history and first since 2009 — and punched their ticket to the Memorial Cup tournament in Quebec City, beginning next Friday. “Tonight was electric, it reminded me of the Memorial Cup night (in 2004),” said Hamilton, the Rockets’ owner and general manager. Hamilton deserves his share of credit for sensing the potential of this group and then going all-in by acquiring defenceman Josh Morrissey and centre Leon Draisaitl from the Prince
Albert Raiders. “When you make the deals we did, it takes a long time to get your team moulded,” said Hamilton. “These guys have come together at the right time. We’ve had some bumps along the way, but I couldn’t be more proud of the players and our entire staff.”
Draisaitl, who spent the first half of the season with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers, delivered the game-winning goal Wednesday and was named playoff MVP. “He’s got better all the time, and as he got more settled here, he just figured out what we needed him to do,” Hamilton said. “He’s excited about what’s happened here.” “It’s unbelievable,” said Draisaitl, whose 28 points tied for the playoff lead in scoring with Portland’s Nic Petan. “As a hockey player, you want to win and you want to win championships, and
once you’re there, it’s the greatest feeling ever. I’m extremely proud of every single guy on our team, we’ve worked so hard all year for this.” Morrissey battled an injury throughout playoffs and was held off the scoresheet in the final two games, but he finished the series with a plus-nine rating and was very much a difference-maker in shutting down Brandon’s best players. “Playing in the league for four years, and being my last year here, to end it off like this, it’s a pretty amazing feeling,” added Morrissey. “To have that in the same year as winning a world-junior gold, it’s a special season. “I’ve got to thank Bruce for making that trade and bringing me here, to give me an opportunity to do something like this.” Draisaitl’s linemates — Rourke Chartier and Nick Merkley — also scored third-period goals as the Rockets pulled away from the Wheat Kings after a tight-checking, scoreless opening 40 minutes. When the final buzzer sounded, the Rockets
Kalispell calling Bandits head south looking to remain perfect
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
A week after the Cranbrook Bandits opened the 2015 American Legion Baseball season in perfect fashion, they look to keep the streaking running as they head to Kalispell, Mont., this weekend. The Bandits open their three-game weekend in a dust-up with Edmonton on Friday at 2 p.m. “It’s going to be a step up,” said Bandits head coach Paul Mrazek. “We play in this tournament every year. Last year, we played in the final. I don’t see why we can’t compete with these teams again. But I think there’s going to be a few teams that are going to be better than the talent we saw [last weekend] in Libby.” Mrazek saw plenty of
promise from his squad on opening weekend, but with the season still in its infancy, he knows there’s plenty of room for improvement.
In particular, he planned on using the week ahead of the tournament to work on situational hitting with his squad. “When we have runners in scoring position, we’ve got to cash them in,” Mrazek said. “That’s done by hitting grounds balls and line drives as opposed to fly balls.” After opening the Kalispell tournament against Edmonton, the
Bandits face Calgary ‘A’ Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. The final opponent of the weekend is still to be determined, with the final game coming Sunday. The Bandits are 3-0 after one weekend of American Legion Baseball, having defeated Noxon, Missoula and the Kootenai Valley Rangers. Infielder Brendan Bird carries a dangerous .500/.727/1.000 slash line into the weekend, while Devon Marra has tossed six innings, whiffing 13 batters. Following this weekend’s journey to Kalispell, the Bandits return to Cranbrook for their home opener when they welcome the Kootenai Valley Rangers to Confederation Park for 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday, May 23.

The Kelowna Rockets completed a four-game sweep of the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday night to claim the 49th Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions. rushed to congratulate Jackson Whistle — not Michael Herringer, who ironically had replaced Whistle in each of the three previous series-clinching victories over Tri-City, Victoria and Portland. This time, it was Whistle on the ice savouring every second as the clock counted down to Kelowna’s championship. He stopped all 19 shots he faced for his franchise-record tying fourth shutout of these playoffs. “It’s nice obviously to close out the series,” said an elated Whistle. “It’s just a great feeling to contribute my part to the
team, and the team played great tonight — it was just unreal.” Whistle opened and closed the playoffs with shutouts and never lost the trust of head coach Dan Lambert. “I think it was a little bit unfair that everything was being said about him not being able to close it out,” said Hamilton. “That was great incentive to him tonight and I thought he did a great job.” It was shocking seeing handshakes after four games between the WHL’s top two teams, neither of which had lost three straight — let alone
four in a row — prior to this series. The sweep came to fruition when the Rockets struck twice early in the third period while Dillon Dube was serving a delay-of-game penalty that carried over from the middle frame. Those shorthanded goals proved to be the final nail in Brandon’s coffin. For the second straight game, Draisaitl opened the scoring with Kelowna outnumbered, taking a feed from Madison Bowey as he drove between two defenders and backhanding a shot over Papirny’s glove at 1:10. Then, at 1:29, Pa-
pirny coughed up the puck on a careless nolook pass from behind his net, which Chartier picked off for a gift goal into the vacant cage. Merkley put on the finishing touch, at 14:30, by firing in a rebound of a perfectly executed 3-on-2 rush that saw Papirny rob Chartier off a feed from Draisaitl, who had taken a drop pass from Merkley just inside Brandon’s blue-line. “My goal was to win a championship and I did it, Draisaitl said. “Now we want to win the Memorial Cup and I think we have the group to do it.”
Rough day on The Farm
Kimberley’s Jared du Toit battles through first round at NCAA Regionals Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
It’s safe to say the opening round of the NCAA San Diego Regional didn’t go quite to plan for Kimberley native Jared du Toit. Representing the University of Idaho Vandals at the NCAA San Diego Men’s Regional golf tournament at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., du Toit fired an opening-day 74 to sit in a tie for 21st place after 18 holes. “I think they were expecting rain and they didn’t get it. They had the course firming up and drying out really well. When they didn’t get the rain and the wind [came], it was playing really firm and really fast,” du Toit said over the phone Thursday afternoon. “It was
tough to get to the hole and the scores kind of indicated that.” The Kimberley native and Big Sky Conference Player of the Year opened the NCAA regional tournament with a one-over 37 on the 3,570-yard back nine before rolling over to the 3,377-yard front nine and carding another one-over 37. “It’s a pretty position-based golf course,” du Toit said of The Farms. “It depends where you put yourself. You don’t always have to be close as long as you leave yourself on the right side of the hole. “I definitely learned that [in round one]. Hopefully I can improve upon that [in round two].” Round one wasn’t all rough as du Toit drained a birdie on his final hole of the day and made three others throughout.
“I left a few out there,” du Toit said. “It was nice to get one on 18. “[I’ll] keep plucking away and go at it [Friday]. Try to roll a couple putts in and get the scores dropping.” On the team leaderboard, du Toit and the Vandals sit 10th out of 13 teams. At 13-over par, the Vandals are 17 strokes back of the Oklahoma Sooners (four-under) for the team lead. On the individual leaderboard sits a threeway tie at the top, with Grant Hirschman, Gudmundur Kristjansson and Grant Bennett all knotted at three-under after 18 holes. du Toit and his Vandals teammates will try to make up some ground when the second round of the NCAA San Diego Regional gets underway Friday morning.
The 54-hole tournament wraps up with the third round Saturday. du Toit claimed the individual title at the Big Sky Conference Men’s Golf Championship, helping his Vandals squad to the overall team championship, which qualified them for the NCAA Regional event. The top five teams at the NCAA San Diego Regional advance to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship slated for May 29 to June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe was redesigned by golf course architect John Fought and PGA Tour professional Tom Lehman in 2000. Check Tuesday’s Townsman/Bulletin for a weekend recap of du Toit’s NCAA Regional.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might have decided to clear the air with someone you deal with on an intellectual level. Hold back for now, as your timing could be off and a nasty tiff might result. Be spontaneous, but make a point of returning all of your calls. Tonight: Embrace surprises. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Try getting more information before making a decision. You could be in a position where it would be a mistake to say or do anything more. The unexpected might throw off your plans; your imagination is likely to go haywire as a result. Tonight: Vanish while you can. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could be in a position where you would prefer to relax. Nevertheless, someone close to you will make a demand of sorts. Lighten up the moment -- not with energy and conversation, but with a smile. It will be very much appreciated. Tonight: Hang out with friends. TGIF!
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You could be pushed beyond your limits and might feel more tired than you thought was possible. Let go of a need to control others. The unexpected will run rampant at the workplace or with an older friend. Tonight: Greet the impossible with laughter and a smile. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Consider taking a trip or planning to do something new; it will refresh your energy. You have a lot to do, so don’t allow others to distract you for too long. A call or email from someone at a distance could be confusing. Ask questions to clarify. Tonight: Be spontaneous. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A close relationship could demand a lot of your time and attention. You might feel as if someone has prevented you from doing something you want to do. You will make some decisions involving a relationship. Hold on to them for now. Tonight: A close encounter. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You could be in a situation that
Tundra
causes a dilemma. You might not be sure which direction to head in or what solution would work best. Allow greater giveand-take between you and others. Your conversations will prove to be most enlightening. Tonight: In the limelight. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Pace yourself, and know what you must do. Touch base with a loved one who tends to be quite controlling and unpredictable. Learn to go with the flow of this person’s different moods. You will like the results, as unpredictable as they might be. Tonight: Try a new spot. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be more tired than you realize. You might want to rethink a personal issue that is affecting your day-to-day life. A loved one seems to be very touchy and difficult at the moment. Do not let this person’s words get to you. Tonight: Be a little naughty. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Focus on an investment that might not be financial but could involve emotions. You could feel
as though someone is pushing you very hard to get you to do something. Consider asking a different person to help you with a project. Tonight: Invite some friends over. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You seem to know what to say in order to calm down a situation and intrigue a loved one. In your playfulness, you could trigger someone else’s temper. Try to remain sensitive to this person, not only for him or her, but also for you. Tonight: Let go of stress. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Your ability to handle funds comes forward. You might feel justified in making a purchase right now, but it wouldn’t be the best decision. Honor a change of pace, and seek out a friend for his or her feedback. You will feel more upbeat as a result. Tonight: Love doesn’t have to cost. BORN TODAY Football player Emmitt Smith (1969), tennis player Andy Murray (1987), baseball player George Brett (1953)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My best friend, “Clara,” and I have known each other for 30 years. We’re both retired and live in the same town. Neither of us has a husband. We talk on the phone every day. We get along fine, except we have never been able to talk politics. If I don’t agree with her completely, Clara gets angry. I’m not allowed to have my own opinion. It’s her way or the highway. Every time she gets mad at me, I’m always the one to pick up the phone and talk to her as though we’ve never argued. Last month, we got into a heated discussion about our world problems, and we both hung up angry. I called Clara that evening, but no one answered, and she didn’t call me back like she always does. This went on for two weeks, so I wrote her a letter explaining how sorry I am, but that I am entitled to my own opinion, the same as anyone else. I also said our friendship is too important to let a silly argument end it. I haven’t heard back. Clara and I were the kind of friends who told each other everything, and I thought we had each other’s back. Her friendship meant everything to me. But am I supposed to lie and say I think the same way she does just to keep the peace? She claims to be religious, but how can she not forgive something like this? I really miss my friend. -- Need Some Advice Dear Need: These days, politics can make enemies out of anyone. Your best bet is to steer clear of the discussion altogether, because you know it only creates an argument. If Clara brings it up, simply say, “I don’t want to talk about politics. How is your daughter doing?” You shouldn’t need to apologize every time. But is there a possibility that, rather than avoiding you, Clara is unwell? Could you check with someone to see whether she is OK? A mutual friend or relative can fill you in on her status and also act as an intermediary to put this latest argument behind you. And keep it there. We hope she’s fine and you can reconcile. A 30-year friendship shouldn’t be thrown away over politics. Dear Annie: I am 91 years old and would like the ability to cry at a death or a funeral or anything sad. What is wrong with me? I feel that I should cry at these times and am hurt when others remark on it. -- Paducah, Ky. Dear Paducah: Everyone responds differently to various emotional events. An inability to cry at all is often a sign of depression, brain injury or illness and should be checked by a physician. But if your problem is that you simply cannot cry at sad events where others are present, it’s more likely you have an inhibition against showing extreme emotion in front of others, something that may have been reinforced since childhood. It doesn’t mean you aren’t sad, and you don’t need to apologize. How you display emotion at funerals is nobody’s business. If faking it would make your life easier, pull out a handkerchief and pretend to wipe your eyes now and then. B.C. judge tells jury to drop one of four terror charges Tamsyn Burgmann Canadian Press
VANCOUVER - A British Columbia couple accused of plotting to blow up the provincial legislature has been found not guilty of one among four charges even before their trial concludes. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Bruce told jurors that due to legal reasons they will not need to make a decision on count three of the indictment - knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity. “You will not be required to come to a decision about the guilt or
innocence of the accused on this count in the indictment,” Bruce said Thursday, a week after jurors were last in court for the trial that began in February. “You must accept as matter of law that the accused cannot be convicted of this charge and you must not speculate as to why this has occurred.” John Nuttall and Amanda Korody pleaded not guilty to a total of four charges. The remaining charges are conspiring to commit murder, conspiring to place explosives on behalf of a terrorist group

After the judge’s ruling, defence lawyer Marilyn Sandford opened her case by presenting several audio and video clips not included during weeks of evidence displayed by the Crown. The jury spent several weeks watching an
Korody said they realize it will take a lot of preparation work, including joining a rocket-building club and obtaining explosives. She said they have thought about dropping pressure-cooker bombs around Victoria as practice to gauge the reaction time by police. The officer responded to the latter idea, saying, “That’s doable. It’ll send a great message.” Nuttall added that he’s “never, ever strayed from my rocket idea.” He suggested that detonat-
