Support staff cut in schools budget I THREE TEACHER positions cut due to declining enrolment. BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

DeMattia is prepping for the Catalyst gala, where she will have to present to a Dragon’s Den-like panel for $50,000 of support.

Science society vying for social enterprise award BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society is looking to emerge victorious in a Dragon’s Den-style competition on Wednesday (May 20). The society, which aims to inspire children to take an interest in science and sustainability, is one of three social enterprise finalists from Vancouver Island selected to take part in the 2015 Social Enterprise Catalyst Gala.

According to Liz DeMattia, society executive director, it stands to win cash and in-kind support totalling $50,000-plus, if successful. DeMattia said a coach, Jill Doucette, has been provided to assist with working on the pitch. She didn’t want to give away too much information on the presentation and how the money would be spent if the society won, as the two are related. She said the presentation relates to “stepping stones”

to get to the society’s longterm goal of a science centre in Nanaimo. It currently operates a science studio at Departure Bay Elementary School. “I will discuss where [the society] started from, where we are currently and where we hope to go, with their help,” DeMattia said. Cuts to education support workers and preliminary planning for a school gym are among items in the Nanaimo school district’s budget for 2015-16. The school board approved a budget totalling $133.8 million on Wednesday, with trustees Jamie Brennan, Noah Routley and Tania Brzovic voting against. Reductions to custodial and maintenance workers were part of initial budget discussions, but the school district found money to save eight positions, including $200,000 that had been earmarked for a Nanaimo District Secondary School project. A p p ro x i m a t e l y t h re e teacher positions were cut due to declining enrolment and attrition. Seven custodial positions will be cut, along with approximately five maintenance and two grounds workers. The school district is projecting a surplus of $1.6 million for next year, although about $700,000 is already spoken for. It is something that didn’t sit well with Rob Zver, president of CUPE Local 606, the sup-

port workers’ union. “They didn’t need to make the necessary cuts this year to taking away services that are provided for the cleanliness and the safety of the students,” said Zver. “They also passed the two-week spring break, which affects only CUPE and only a handful of [teachers].” During budget consultations, the parent advisory council for École Hammond Bay expressed concerns about capacity of the school’s gym. The trustees allocated $25,000 for project planning, according to the school district. “The district will be working with the school, which already had been doing some work and that’s getting the ball rolling to make sure that in the near future, they do get the new gym that they’re hoping for. “It could very well be a review or in some sort of report because that’s the first step in making sure that we have what we need, so that we can get more money from the [Ministry of Education],” said Dale Burgos, school district spokesman. The school district was hit with a surprise expense of $434,000 for high-speed Internet upgrades from the province. As a result, a 10-per cent reduction on all non-instructional services and supplies will occur. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

FraSEr INSTITuTE releases its annual secondary report. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Following on the heels of recently released elementary school rankings, the Fraser Institute released its 2015 report card for B.C. high schools on Thursday. The report from the rightwing think tank ranks 289 public and private B.C. high schools based on factors such as provincial exam results, graduation rates, and grade transition rates, using numbers from the 2013-14 school year. Dover Bay Secondar y School ranked the highest of Nanaimo area schools and 85th in the overall provincial

rankings, followed by independent school Nanaimo Christian at 114; Nanaimo District Secondary at 151; Wellington at 254; Woodlands at 270; Cedar Community at 272; and John Barsby, which moved up 14 places to 274. The secondar y school report, along with its elementary counterpart, are controversial, as some, including school board chairman Steve Rae, consider public versus private schools an unfair comparison. “I know last year for example, Barsby rated right at the bottom of the Fraser Institute and to me that’s frustrating because there are so many things that school offers that aren’t rated by the Fraser Institute, so I don’t put a lot of stock into what the Fraser Institute has to say,” said Rae. Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school per-

Proposals can be subject to intense scrutiny. DeMattia is hopeful she will be able stand firm under cross-examination. “Our pitch coach has been working with us on how to answer questions and be ready for the hard questions of the

judges, so hopefully I’m prepared ... My understanding is that it will be similar to Dragon’s Den, but they might not be as mean,” said DeMattia. The society will be up against Skookum Food and Coffee and Tofino Ucluelet Culinary Guild. Michelle Stil-

Help needed for dry grad ALMANAC oming... c , e r a s p e g n a h u C . Y Get ready.. While the organizing committee for NanaimoLadysmith Dry Grad is seeing an influx of volunteers, it still seeks more. The alcohol-free graduation event for students in the Nanaimo school district is slated for June 26 at Beban Park and includes a variety of events, such as karaoke, scuba diving and kayak races. Food will be provided as well. There were only 40 people signed up earlier in the month, but according to Dave Brown, dry grad chairman, that number has swelled to an estimated 100-plus volunteers. Organizers are seeking 200 to 250 volunteers for site security, bag check-in, cleanup, entertainment booths and kitchen staff. “Other than that, it’s just generalized volunteering and helping, wherever you’re needed at the time,” said Brown. The event has been taking place for 26 years and is a good event for those about to get their diplomas, he said. To volunteer, please e-mail volunteers@ nanaimodrygrad.ca.

Regional district sticks with current dump fees Regional District of Nanaimo directors debated raising tipping fees for small waste haulers to subsidize larger haulers, but in the end voted to stick with the status quo. In a close vote at its meeting earlier last month, the board decided to leave tipping fees at the current rate while the Solid Waste Management Plan is under review. The regional district’s Solid Waste Services is financed primarily by tip-

ping fees. Last year tip fee revenues were $850,000 less than expected. The shortfall comes from large haulers shipping waste outside the region, likely to the U.S., for a lower cost of disposal. Additional influences include less waste generated due to economic factors, a higher use of waste stewardship and recycling programs, and a reduction in packaging. Director Julian Fell, who represents Coombs-Errington, said bulk haul-

ers, likely hauling for multi-family buildings and commercial users in Nanaimo, are getting a cheaper rate by taking trash to the U.S. “In effect they’re getting a break and the shortfall in cash is to be made up by transferring the shortfall of cost onto the little guys which I don’t think is particularly fair,” said Fell. “It’s also an incentive for illegal dumping.” RDN staff will continue to monitor out-of-region disposal trends.

B.C. SPCA’s Nanaimo branch manager Leon Davis is basking in the glow of peer recognition. Davis was presented with the society’s 2015 Leadership Award, which honours staff who “exemplifies excellent teamwork and ingenuity” at the B.C. SPCA annual awards ceremony in Richmond on May 2. “It’s a little humbling because I know most of my colleagues in the 36 other shelters and we all know how freaking hard everybody works,” Davis said. Davis took over Nanaimo SPCA branch operations in 2009, but followed a winding

road to specializing in animal welfare. The 41-year-old was born in London, England, and came to Canada at age seven when his father took a job with an engineering firm in Calgary. After high school Davis returned to England where he learned management and community relations skills running a theme park in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and also resurrected a failing aquarium, purchased by the theme park operators, which ultimately won three county business awards that included growing business of the year, staff training and environmental awareness. The awards and newspaper clippings of their presentations helped Davis land the SPCA job. Davis has helped establish Nanaimo SPCA partnerships with Haven House, John Howard Society, programs working with people with disabili-

ties and arranging emergency pet boarding for people dealing with health crises or mishaps, such as fires or floods that have forced them from their homes. The society has changed its approach to adopting animals as well, by simplifying adoption forms and establishing relationships with clients to determine adoption suitability. Attitudes toward people surrendering pets they can no longer care for has shifted from a position of judgment to understanding. “They shouldn’t be judged,” Davis said. “They should be applauded for coming here and trying to find help.” He has also worked with the city to establish new animal welfare bylaws and to move forward on building a new shelter on a five-hectare property on Westwood Road, for which construction could get underway this summer.

Alberta vote is a shakeup

The Alberta election, held earlier this month, may or may not prove to be a seismic shift in Canadian politics. The governing Progressive Conservatives, in power under seven different premiers since 1971, were dramatically thrown out of office by voters. Taking their place as the government of Alberta is the Alberta NDP, a party that has never held more than 16 seats in the legislature. Political scientists are having a field day with the election. There are many reasons for the fall of the PCs and the rise of the NDP, but the overriding one seems to be that the PCs took power for granted after 44 years. While leader Jim Prentice was capable and experienced, his actions in luring opposition Wildrose Party MLAs to his caucus, and bringing in a budget that punished ordinary Albertans, seemed to infuriate voters. The NDP under Rachel Notley seemed the best option for many of them. This election could have implications for the federal election in October. The Conservatives won all but one seat in Alberta in 2011. If there is a significant shift away from them (although they are not directly connected to the Alberta PCs), it could hurt the party’s chances of being re-elected as government. The federal Liberals could also be hurt by the shift to the NDP provincially, while the federal NDP in Alberta, who now hold just one seat there, are likely to benefit. In B.C., there are also implications. Notley opposes the Northern Gateway pipeline, which would now seem to have little chance of being built. She backs the twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipeline, and she also wants more Alberta oil processed in Canada – something many people of all political stripes agree with. It is quite likely that she and B.C. Premier Christy Clark can work well together on many issues, including pipelines and adding value to resources extracted in Canada.

The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

city home, I have come to understand just how important coal was to this community and B.C. The City of Nanaimo and its residents have a unique opportunity to come together and transform a degraded concrete structure into a beautifully restored space that attracts tourists and serves not just as a monument to the coal industry, but also as an interactive learning centre. Sure, the costs associated with restoring the Morden Mine structure have been estimated at nearly $3 million, but history is priceless and there are some things worth keeping. Also, any type of restoration project or learning centre would create jobs short- and long-term. There are plaques erected in around Nanaimo that pay tribute to the coal mines, but it isn’t enough. Last September, the Nanaimo Art Gallery featured an exhibit called Black Diamond Dust on the history of coal. It was interactive, engaging and informative, but now it is gone. The Friends of Morden Mine had a vision of something much greater than just a restored concrete structure. They envisioned a place where future generations could come and learn about the workers and history of coal. It seems that all of that will go up in smoke if this group truly decides to hang up its mining hats. But it doesn’t have to. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Start informing voters right now

Two-In-One Tablet/Notebook PC A tablet when you want it, a laptop PC when you need it.

To the Editor,

The T11M 2-in-1 tablet gives you the mobility and flexibility of a tablet PC along with the security, connectivity, convenience, and compatibility of a Windows 8.1 notebook PC.

We have approximately five months before the next federal election. NanaimoLadysmith is the name of our new blended constituency. We have four candidates competing for our vote; Tim Tessier for the Liberals, Mark MacDonald for the Conservatives, Sheila Malcomson for the NDP and Paul Manly for the Greens. The next five months give us an excellent opportunity to learn more about each candidate and their party policies. Betterinformed citizens are possibly more likely to vote – good for our democracy. Instead of waiting until after the election to wring our hands and complain of ‘voter apathy’ why not encourage citizens to write in their questions and give each candidate a set amount of words to respond so policies and candidates can be compared? Remember, however disinterested you may be in politics, the results of the election will affect you. Better to have your say and vote.

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital needs to improve its parking policy or layout to make things easier on patients, says letter writer.

To the Editor,

In this day and age, in all centres with parking facilities, it is the employees who must park on the perimeter of the lot, not the paying public. Why then are the physicians at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital

given priority marked parking spaces nearest the entrances -- ambulatory clinic and emergency? Being a client attending the ambulatory clinic, it is a mystery that the least able must park at such a distance. By the time we find

a space, get a ticket, back to the car and then back to the entrance, gasping for air and leg cramps are our rewards. The hospital should re-think its parking design and think of the patients.

T.M. Wilson via e-mail

The T11M includes a tablet PC with an 11.6-inch full HD touchscreen, quad-core Intel processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and Windows 8.1. The T11M 2-in-1 tablet includes a unique detachable keyboard base station that features a laptop style keyboard, touchpad, two USB ports, and a second battery. The second battery more than doubles the time that you can run without an AC power source. The keyboard base station can be fitted with up to 1TB of optional secondary storage in the form of a hard disk drive or solid-state drive. Ask for details.

Dr. Karin L. Mattern CHIROPRACTOR

3648 Departure Bay Road (across from Rock City School)

Will creditors continue to harass me after I declare bankruptcy?

DR. PAUL GENEAU

The Canadian Association of Optometrists and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind are reminding people that our vision is precious, and that there are steps that we can take to protect and enhance our sight. One of the most important ways to ensure that we maintain good vision is to have regular comprehensive eye examinations, yearly for children and seniors and every two years for adults. 75% of vision loss is preventable! Life is worth seeing. Take care of your eyes.

Dr. Paul Geneau OPTOMETRIST

■ Naturopathic Physician

Some nutritionists and professionals would argue that we can get all the nutrients we need DR. KAREN L. FRASER from our food, but this is debatable. There is a depletion of nutrients in the soil, crops have been hybridized for taste over nutritional value, GMO produce offers debatable nutritional value and cooking causes nutrient loss. As a result, overfed Canadians are suffering from high rates of nutritional deficiencies. I offer my patients a high quality multivitamin to help them build a foundation for optimal health. When looking for a good quality, you should look for a label to say that it is hypo-allergenic, wheat & dairy free (as these are commonly used as binders or fillers), as well as no preservatives or food colouring. On top of these items, look for bioactive ingredients such as 5-MTHF, methylcobalamin, full spectrum tocopherols, activated B6 as P5P, and vitamin K in the forms of MK-7 and MK-4. Instead of taking a handful of individual pills, sometimes a good quality multivitamin may have it all! Naturopathic consults are covered by most extended health care plans.

Tutor Being that it’s so close to the end of the school year and my son, David, isn’t at his grade level for math, should I wait until next school year to get him help?

Between the time that you file for bankruptcy GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP and are discharged, there is a “stay of proceedings” in place under which creditors may not continue any legal collection proceedings. As long as you comply with all of your duties and receive your discharge from bankruptcy, most creditor claims will be legally extinguished such that they can no longer pursue collection from you. However, your discharge from bankruptcy will not relieve you of the following debts: • Court ordered fines or penalties; • Court ordered damages for intentionally inflicted bodily harm; • Court ordered support or maintenance; • Debts arising out of fraud or misappropriation; and, • Student loan debts incurred within seven years preceding the date of bankruptcy. As such, you will continue to have to deal with these creditors claims either during the bankruptcy or immediately following your discharge.

AMBER SCOTCHBURN No! This is a perfect time to get him help as you can talk BSW, B.Ed to David’s teacher to find out where the help should be concentrated. You can ask the teacher: -What does the teacher see as your child’s weaknesses and strengths? -Can they explain the breakdown of David’s current mark? -What would be the best course of action right now to catch up, keep up, and/or excel? -Would they have copies of your child’s tests and assignment from the year? -Could they provide an opportunity to re-do any of the work to excel in the course by the end of the year? -Can they provide the upcoming schedule of work: topics, assignments, tests? -Will they provide review for the final exam (if there is one)? If so, can your child have it earlier? -Would they communicate with a tutor? Please connect with us, as we have designed a PDF Checklist so that parents, just like you, can know what questions to ask! We will passionately and confidently match your child with one of our amazing tutors. And at Tutoring ... With A Twist, we go above and beyond the academic basics to teach your child how they learn. Family Law My boyfriend and I lived together for over two years, had two kids, then broke up and now I want to get sole custody LAURA ALLEN & and guardianship. What’s the difference KARA DUNCAN between custody and guardianship? If you and your spouse were never married, you will be applying for a court order under the provincial Family Law Act (FLA). Under the FLA there is no such thing as custody. That term is now only reserved for married spouses who apply under the Divorce Act in Supreme Court. Under the FLA you and your boyfriend, because you lived together with the children, are both presumed to be guardians. As the guardians of the children, you are presumed to share all parental responsibilities for your children unless you agree or the court otherwise orders. Section 41 of the FLA outlines a list of 12 broad parental responsibilities such as, deciding where the children will live, who the children will associate with, what extracurricular activities they will participate in, and their religious and cultural upbringing. You and your spouse can share all of the parental responsibilities in consultation with one another, divide them up between you or one of you can have them all. If you cannot agree on how the parental responsibilities will be shared, you can apply to the court and have a Judge decide.

■ Laywers

Scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine, falls into two broad categories. One is functional, which arises when the base of the spine is not level, DR. KAREN MATTERN or when segments of the spinal column are misaligned. This can be corrected or minimized with chiropractic treatment. The second is idiopathic, which means it is of unknown origin. Although some forms of idiopathic scoliosis appear in infancy, the most common type begins in adolescence, most often in girls. Treatment is aimed at minimizing the curve, for health as well as cosmetic reasons. Often the diagnosis is made when the patient complains of pain, but if the spinal joints are moving freely, idiopathic scoliosis need not be a painful condition. It is a good policy to have your children’s spines screened regularly by a chiropractor. In the early stages, functional scoliosis can be easily corrected, while idiopathic scoliosis is most successfully controlled if it is detected as early as possible. At any age, spinal pain can usually be relieved. For more information call 250-758-7022, email us at drkarin@shaw.ca or check out our website: drkarinmattern.shawwebspace.ca

Snoring is the sound produced by vibration NICOLE CAOUETTE of soft tissue in the upper airway due to restricted air movement. Snoring can be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) or, at the very least, contribute to sleep deprivation. With OSA, repetitive blockage of the airway occurs resulting in decreased oxygenation of the blood. This disorder can be linked to many significant health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and depression. The easiest way to tell if snoring is a sign of OSA is to have a sleep test done. Provincial Sleep Group offers a no charge sleep test which you can perform yourself in the comfort of your own home. We also provide effective treatment and support for a variety of Sleep disordered breathing conditions. Contact us if you would like a sleep study and assessment performed or for more information.

advertising How can I make sure advertising will work for my company? Message: The essential first step in advertising is to figure out what message to send to your customers. Advertising is simply a way to send a message based on your marketing plan and sound business strategy. Repetition: An advertising campaign is a planned appeal to the client’s potential customers, using the power of repetition. The power of repetition reinforces the advertisers message. Consistency equates with familiarity, familiarity equates with confidence and confidence equates with sales.

Notary My bank has recommended that I add one of my children to my bank account to make it easier for them to help me TIAH M. WORKMAN look after my finances. Is there any problem with me doing this.

This is a question that makes most notaries and lawyers cringe! There is no problem with this as long as you are OK with that child keeping all of the money in that account when you die, but the banks seldom let you know that will happen. If you add someone to your account, any money in that account becomes theirs on your death and they do not have to share it with the others. If you want to make it easier for them to help you look after your finances, have an Enduring Power of Attorney prepared that will allow them to assist with matters at that bank and with any other legal or financial matters that you may need assistance with.

Experts’ Advice How Do I Deal With My Plantar Fasciitis?

The Plantar fascia is a ligament located on the DR. KATIA bottom of the foot. It functions by attaching the ball LANGTON of the foot to the front of the heel. It is important in maintaining arch height and providing stability to the foot when you walk. When there are problems with the way you walk, increased stress on the fascia causes injury and subsequently pain. Biomechanical problems can include the big toe having too much movement, the foot over pronating (arch collapsing) or the ankle being restricted or stiff in its movement increasing stress on the Plantar fascia. Typically the fascia will try to repair itself when you sleep or sit for extended periods. Once you stand up and put weight on the fascia, you tear the ligament and thwart these attempts to heal the fascia. This explains why pain is often worse first thing in the morning or after standing from sitting for longer periods of time. One of the more effective solutions is to support the arch with a custom foot orthotic. Custom orthotics will limit the stretch on the Plantar fascia. Once you limit the repetitive strain on the fascia; the inflammation and the pain it causes will generally resolve over a period of 6-8 weeks. As you are correcting the biomechanics with custom orthotics, you will need to stretch the tight achilles tendon and use cold laser, ice and ultrasound to decrease inflammation and speed up healing.

First I’ll tell you what high density means. Foam is poured by weight per cubic foot, the higher that weight the longer the foam will last. Typically we carry 1 lb, 2 lb and 2.5 lb foams. The 1 lb being suitable for light occasional use, camping, throw on the floor for guests etc. 2 lb and 2.5 for upholstery and beds. Separate from density is firmness, within the 3 weight groups we can make the foam as soft or firm as what we need. So to throw in your tent for a couple of weeks a 1 lb 4” firm will probably be fine (low density). If you’re reupholstering your camper, RV or boat and you use it a lot use a 2 lb or higher. What is my home Comparative worth? Market Analysis

If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIMTIM WAITWAIT P.R.E.C. can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. How can you tell if the CMA you’ve been given is worth more than the piece of paper it’s written on? Call me at 713-1223 or email tim@timwait.com and I will let you know.

Many people today are plagued with a variety of anxiety symptoms ranging from increased heart rate, profuse sweating, feelings of fear and foreboding, TRACY L. THOMPSON body pain, shakiness, burning skin, dizziness and many other symptoms. So why are we getting so anxious today? What is the cause? Some of it has to do with our fight or flight response within our subconscious mind. You see our autonomic nervous system will use our sympathetic response towards any perceived danger by increasing our heart rate, tightening your muscles, and a host of other bodily changes all designed to help us fight off or to run away from danger. But what if the perceived danger is not a bear jumping out of the woods but rather a car cutting us off in traffic? Or maybe you have experienced in the past a negative event, emotion or trauma and something you experience today triggers you into reacting with anxiety symptoms that you wish you could control. Hypnotherapy will help you to get your anxiety symptoms under control by teaching your mind a new reality and by providing you with mental triggers designed to help you change this reaction so you feel more calm, relaxed and in control. art into the library for years. “I’ve wanted to have an art competition in the library now for a couple of years,” Carter said. “But we’re a small cozy branch so trying to have big art wouldn’t really work. I came across another library that had a Post-it Note competition that was really successful. So I thought why not try it.” The Post-it Note contest runs until May 31 and is free to enter. For more information, please call the library at 250-758-5544 or visit www. virl.bc.ca.

Lifelong musician Jeffrey Randle was playing the djembe at an open mike when he caught the attention of a female musician named Katelyn Wood. “She was in the audience. She had never even heard me sing or play guitar or heard any of my songs,” Randle recalled. “I never heard any of her songs and she said to me ‘if you help me find a drum and give some drum lessons I will sing for you.’” Randle happily agreed. “I took a chance and she took a chance” Randle said. It wasn’t long after that the two began singing and performing together. “That’s how it started and we started to start gigging together and she’s on the album I am working on,” he said. On Sunday (May 24) Randle and Wood will be performing at the Lantzville Farmers Market, 7113 Lantzville Rd., between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. “We just enjoy working and singing together,” Randle said. Randle was born and raised in Nanaimo and became interested in music at an early age. “Dad handed me a guitar at the age of six ... and that is how I learned,” he said. Randle, who lived off the grid on the Hawaiian island of Maui in 2007 and was a member of the Naked Grapes band, is working on his second album, which he hopes to release later this year. “It’s going to be a 10-song album,” he said. “On it is it going to be a little bit of reggae. In fact one of the songs that is on it I wrote while I was in Maui.” Randle said the record, which has yet to be named, will include a mix of genres such as country and Romanian gypsy. “There is a little bit of hillbilly stuff ... and when it gets done it is going to have horns on it,” Randle said. Randle and Wood perform in Lantzville on Sunday. For more information, please visit http://on.fb.me/1E8gdU6.

Puppet show pokes fun

I

POLITICAL-THEMED musical touches on range of major issues. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

The Canadian Prime Minister will be in the Harbour City tonight. But it won’t be the Stephen Harper that one might expect. This Stephen Harper is merely a puppet controlled by multitalented performer James Gordon, who just happens to be an elected official in Guelph, Ont. “I make my living mostly as a singer-songwriter. I am touring all over the place,” Gordon said. “In the last few years of touring in Canada the most common topic that people want to talk about is … what is happening to our country?” Tonight (May 19), people will have the opportunity to hear about to hear and see the puppet version of Stephen Harper when Gordon performs his one-man show Stephen Harper: The Musical at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre at 7 p.m. “The reason why I have a kind of creepy large Stephen Harper puppet on the stage is because it is a not-so-subtle metaphor,” Gordon said. “I feel like he is actually a puppet for big oil.” Stephen Harper: The Musical

is mainly a comedy, but Gordon said the show is also designed to educate people about what is happening to Canada. “I kind of lay it out because people have short memories politically in this country, I think,” Gordon said. “In the second half of the show we start to look at what we can do about it besides just electing someone else. There are other things.” Gordon, who was elected as a city councillor in Guelph last October, has been a performer for years and created the musical more than a year ago. While the production touches on a range of serious issues, such as pipelines, Gordon says he tries to keep the show fun. “I try to use humour and music with it and keep it light and I hope people get entertained first and educated second,” Gordon said. Since the show began, Gordon has toured it throughout the country. In an effort to keep the show current, he is always tweaking his production. “There is so much that changes all the time,” he said. “The show keeps changing itself. I keep updating it. I have a song about Bill C-51 now.” Stephen Harper: The Musical runs at Malaspina Theatre tonight. Tickets are $25. For more information, including ticket purchases, please visit www.jamesgordon.ca.

He is survived by his brothers, Mike Seriani, Wayne Seriani, Glen Seriani; sister, Lynette Seriani; daughter, Jennifer (David) Dunne; granddaughter, Chloe Dunne; and dog, Kemo. Ken also leaves behind extended family members, including numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Born in Nanaimo, BC on March 29th, 1953, Ken continued to live in Nanaimo through his adulthood. He worked as a millwright at Western Forest Products for many years. Ken was a true sports fanatic, but his biggest passions were the game of golf and the Chicago Cubs. Ken will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. We will miss all his jokes and witty sense of humour the most. Celebration of Life will take place at the Cavallotti Lodge on Sunday, June 14th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, please consider making a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association, as this charity was very close to Ken’s heart. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

Cindy Zboyovsky-Brown (nee Hunter) September 1955 – May 8, 2015 Cindy is survived by her father, Tom Hunter, siblings Curt, Jeanine, Chris, her daughter Kristen Buckley; grandchildren Braydan, Ava & Leah, and her Aunt Gail (Bryan). Most important to Cindy was her family and she also had such a love for pets. She fought such a long and hard battle with cancer. Those who loved her will have fond memories that will last forever. We wish to thank everyone who helped us through this difficult time. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 from 2:pm – 4:pm at Telford’s funeral chapel 595 Townsite Road. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Cancer Foundation or charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce Bill’s sudden passing. He died in the early hours of May 7 with his wife and soul mate Jackie by his side. He also leaves behind, his brother Johnny, daughter and son in law Ruby & Jim Finkbeiner, grandsons Jamie (Vanessa), Matthew and Paul and great grandson Josh. He is predeceased by his brother George and sisters Jean & Kathy. Bill lived his life to the fullest with joy and determination and met each challenge with courage and certitude that he could make a difference. His glass was always more than half full. Born in Hamlin Alberta, his life choices and career in Construction and Real Estate Development led him to many places and opportunities and his passion for fly fishing and marksmanship helped to balance his love for business with his love for nature. Bill left his mark on the industry he so loved and took great pride in his accomplishments and deeply valued the friends and colleagues he met along the way. He sought to mentor and share his experiences to help others as he had been helped when finding his way. He remained active doing the work he loved and finally called his hobby. Robert Neil Best June 29, 1935 May 8, 2015 Bob passed away peacefully on May 8, 2015. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Sandra and by daughter Kathryn Rutherford (Dennis), and sons Doug (Marilyn), Gerry, Rick (Holly) and John (AnnaRita), grandchildren Kyle (Nicole), Craig (Kylie), Tora Don, Demitra, Montana, Marina, Marino, Danianna (Matt), Meridian and great-grandson Layton. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth Best and sisters, Kathleen, Dorothy, Barbara and Margaret. Bob also leaves behind brothers Douglas (Audrey), Kenneth (Margaret) and Dennis; sisters, Joyce (Bill) Kotchonoski and Elizabeth (Barry) Darby; brother-in-law David Stewart (Lorraine); as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Bob was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and the family moved to Nanaimo in 1937. He attended school in Nanaimo but, even from an early age, was known to miss a day or two if the trout were biting in the Millstream. Bob worked as a mechanic for many years and had a rare talent for fixing small engines whether it was a chainsaw, lawnmower or outboard engines for the bathtub race. A favourite trick of the family was to bring your broken engine to the house and start working on it. Before you knew it Dad was pushing you out of the way to do it properly. Bob had a lifelong love of fishing and hunting and spent many years salmon fishing up and down the coast in his small wooden troller, fishing for trout in local lakes and hiking through fields and hills looking for game. He never tired of sharing his stories with friends and family and loved a good laugh. Bob/Dad/Papa will be greatly missed by everyone, including his best pals Hannigan and Tequila. The family would like to thank Dr. Schulson for his many years of treating Bob and also the wonderful paramedics, doctors and nurses at NRGH for their care in the last days. It was Bob's wish not to have a service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation.

fight

Long weekend delays scores Some teams took the long weekend off, but there were others in action the past few days. Due to early deadlines necessitated by the Victoria Day long weekend, recent sports scores weren’t available at press time. The Nanaimo Pirates played a pair of big games on Sunday against their No. 1 rivals, the Langley Blaze, and the V.I. Raiders junior football team held its spring camp. goes on Gordy Racette trying to make boxing history BY GREG SAKAKI The NewS BuLLeTIN

F

or Gordy Racette, getting back in the boxing ring after 15 years is like something out of The Twilight Zone. There’s an episode of the 1980s TV show, recalled Racette, where a young boy is compelled to read to his greatgreat-great-grandfather every night, and as long as the boy never finishes a story, the old man stays alive and awaits the ending. “So this family, through generations, kept reading him stories. He couldn’t die until he got to the end,” said Racette. “And that’s kind of like me. I set goals five, 10 years down the road. It keeps you motivated to keep going.” Nanaimo’s Racette (396) is fighting Kelowna’s Sandy Pembroke (3-7) as part of the Rumble at the Rink boxing card this Saturday (May 23) at Frank Crane Arena. It will be an historic bout – only two other pugilists have fought in five different decades, and no Canadian has performed the feat. “In 2000, when I had my fourth-decade fight, I went, ‘Ha ha, four decades, I wonder if I can make it five?’ So the seed was planted,”

Nanaimo’s Gordy Racette will step back in the boxing ring for the first time in 15 years this week at the Rumble at the Rink card on Saturday (May 23) at Frank Crane Arena. The 63-year-old Racette will face a 42-year-old opponent.

Racette said. Once he identifies a goal, he said, he can’t quit, and has to “go for the gusto.” Even if someone tells him he can’t do it. “[They say], ‘You’re too old; you shouldn’t be fighting,’ Why? Well, maybe because they don’t,” Racette said. “I’ve passed all the physical hoops, the mental hoops, I’ve done that and beyond. There’s no reason for me to not fight.” His sports heroes are legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Gordie Howe whose careers spanned decades. Racette himself might have generations of fans in the stands this week; the multiple-time toughman boxing champ in the late 1970s and early ’80s went on to fight in Atlantic City and Las

Vegas and exotic locales around the world. Now, his career comes full circle, back to the Island where he threw his first punches. The bout that’s been booked is perhaps a tougher matchup than Racette might have anticipated. His 42-year-old oppo-

nent is coming off a 10-round loss last year in a Canadian Professional Boxing Council cruiserweight title fight. “For some reason, the commission, because of my record, thinks that I should be fighting a top 20 in the world or something,” Racette said. “Hey guys – I haven’t fought in 15 years.” But it’s coming back to him. Some boxers talk about ring psychology; Racette talks about neurons and dendrites and their role in creating innate qualities through repetition. If he can draw from his experiences in the ring, then it won’t matter as much that he might have lost a step over the years. “When you see somebody standing in front of you and their shoulder twitches or their eyes open up, you know

something’s happening, then you have to react. That’s the difficulty, is trying to co-ordinate what you see and evading the shot,” he said. “It’s difficult, but it can be done.” It’s supposed to be difficult, he said. Achieving a goal should take a lot of effort. Too many people talk themselves out of trying, or they let themselves get talked out of it. “Any goal that you have, it’s possible,” said Racette. “You just can’t quit. As soon as you stop your dream, it’s dead. So you have to keep moving towards it.” And that’s why the old man stays alive to hear the ending of the story, and then the next one, and the next one. And the fight goes on. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Two Western Canadian title fights to be contested on boxing card The Rumble at the Rink boxing card Saturday (May 23) at Frank Crane Arena features two Canadian Professional Boxing Council Western Canadian title fights. The night’s main event sees

Aubrey Morrow of Qualicum Beach take on Paul Bzdel of Saskatoon for the vacant middleweight title. Following a long layoff, Morrow won at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre last year and then

won another bout in the fall, setting up his title shot. “Aubrey has been very impressive since his return,” said his trainer, Rich LeStage. “He’s matured a lot as a fighter, which

is great to see.” There is also a super flyweight women’s championship bout on Saturday night’s card. First bout is at 6:30 p.m. -with files from Tyson Taylor

The Nanaimo Timbermen added some scoring punch to the lineup. The city’s senior A western Lacrosse Association club traded for Reagan harding last week, sending a 2016 fifth-round draft pick to the New westminster Salmonbellies. harding recently wrapped his senior season at Lake erie College, where he led his team in goals with 44.

Jr. T-men take on Shamrocks

I

LACROSSE RIVALS meet tonight (May 19) in Nanaimo.

The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen will try to mow down the Victoria Shamrocks. Vancouver Island’s two B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League squads meet for the first time this regular season tonight (May 19) in Nanaimo. Photo submitted

Nanaimo’s Morgan Theedom of Brechin Lanes is the new B.C. Five-Pin Bowlers’ Association ladies’ champion after winning last month in Chilliwack.

Brechin bowlers win championships Two female bowlers from Nanaimo’s Brechin Lanes ended their seasons by winning major championships. Mikayla Eby won the Youth Bowling Canada junior girls’ five-pin championship earlier this month, while Morgan Theedom won the B.C. Five-Pin Bowlers’ Association’s B.C. Open women’s championship last month. Eby averaged 214 over 22 games at the three-day event in Toronto and Oshawa, then needed a tie-breaker game because she

and another girl had each won 17 games. In the tiebreaker, Eby defeated Maude Durand-Rondeau of Gatineau, Que., 239202. Theedom’s victory Easter weekend in Chilliwack also came down to the wire. She averaged 248 over the 10-game round robin, qualifying her for the playoffs. There, she advanced in the double-knockout brackets and had to defeat the top seed twice in a row to win the B.C. Open. Theedom swept Brittany Dacosta 243-195, then 257-231.

“It always builds a lot of energy,” said Kyle Couling, Timbermen coach. “And being from the Island, all these guys have played against each other for years, so there’s a really good rivalry there, and that’s a motivator for a lot of these guys.” The Timbermen have raised their game of late, led by some of their returning college players, the coach said. Still, Nanaimo will go into tonight’s matchup as

the underdog. “That leads us to being hungrier, I think,” Couling said. “If … we want it more and we play physically and all give 100 per cent, then we’d like to take the ‘W.’” GAME ON … The Timbermen and Shamrocks face off tonight at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena and tickets will be available at the door … The T-men hosted the Port Coquitlam Saints on Saturday after press time. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo’s Dylan Chapdelaine has carried on a V.I. Raiders tradition of winning the Wally Buono Award. The linebacker is the fourth Raider in the past six years to win the national award for junior football achievement and leadership. Look for more in a future edition of the News Bulletin.
