Art collective embraces The constantly evolving mural on Vernon Street is part of a larger vision for Nelson

The wall beside Thor’s Pizzeria on Vernon Street has been constantly evolving for months as part of the Peanut Gallery’s art project Metamorphosis. Sergio and Amber Santos are two of the artists involved in the Peanut Gallery’s art project Metamorphosis. Photo by Will Johnson WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser

Until quite recently, there was a hardhat-wearing purple monkey sitting atop a pile of bananas spraypainted across the back wall of the Peanut Gallery in downtown Nelson. Joined by a huddle of confused pen-

guins, the monkey shrieked under the words “Don’t Trust the Crayon People”. “It was a bit of a joke on censorship,” said artist Coleman Webb, who was responsible for creating the image. “The crayon people are all those wonderful creative people who want to express themselves more and the

monkey’s like this nutty force that’s in control, which doesn’t make sense, but he’s in the way.” And though the monkey is no longer there—he’s since been painted over—it’s that message that Webb is trying to get across with the collaborative project he’s currently working on, entitled Metamorphosis. Along with

a group of Kootenay artists, he’s currently spearheaded a project to paint his building inside, out and all around. “Right from the get-go, when we moved into the Peanut Gallery, I knew I wanted that back wall to be a constantly changing, evolving piece,” he said. “Then more and more people started getting involved. I’m not sure

I’ve even met everyone who’s worked on it.” Webb said he would like to see easing of the bureaucratic obstacles set in the path of artists aspiring to create large-scale public works, and he’s hoping his project will help people in Nelson abandon their negative ideas of graffiti and street art. continued on page A5

Kaslo’s origin and spelling always controversial Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Ninety-sixth in a series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names In the last installment, we began looking at the origin of Kaslo, first mentioned in 1889 as Caslo. The Kaslo Claim of June 9, 1893 wrote: “It is surprising how many

different ways people spell the name of this city. Here are some of the ways: Caslo, Kasaloo, Kelso, Kalso, Kasslow, O’Kaslo, Kasloo, Kaslien, Caslien, Kissloo, Kisslow, Cashloo, and many others. The proper and official way to spell it is Kaslo, always with a big K.”  George Owen Buchanan, West Kootenay’s early timber

baron, addressed the subject in an address to the annual convention of the Boards of Trade in Eastern BC. His speech was reproduced in The Kootenaian on Oct. 30, 1913. “‘Look for timber on Caslo Creek,’ said Mr. G.M. Sproat, government agent at Revelstoke when I was leaving in May 1888 for my first trip down the Columbia

River to Kootenay Lake. He was kind enough to spell the name for me: C-a-s-l-o. ‘I have the information from the late [Robert] Sproule,’ he said … And now as to the name. I have seen old maps in which the name appears spelled with an initial C. Mr. [David] Kane, however, at an early date decided for the use of a K instead … “Mr. J.W. Cockle derives the name Kaslo from ‘aassassaloo’ which in Kootenay Indian language (Mr. Cockle says)  means a ‘raspberry patch.’ This abbreviated (by white men) became ‘sassloo — Caslo – Kaslo.’ Many of us have a more commonplace explanation. Within easy memory, old Caslo, an Indian, was living at Bonner’s Ferry. Some few years before our time this Indian, under the auspices of Richard Fry … had spent a winter in trapping marten on Kaslo creek. I have heard his catch stated at 800, and again at 1,500 skins. He had a cabin on the present townsite, and the site of his operations continued to be known as Caslo’s creek. As to the origin of the Indian’s name, I

Vernon Street’s evolving mural

West Kootenay Advertiser

There is a little piece of France in the West Kootenay now that Calix Webber is back in Fruitvale. Through an international student exchange program, Webber spent six months in Vannes, France, living with a host family before heading back to Canada with his exchange brother, Remi. The trip opened his eyes to a different culture, different people, and even a new language. “I really enjoyed being part of another family in another country and being part of another culture,” he said. “I made lots of new friends and people that I will remember for the rest of my life. Seeing all the sights of France was nice, too.” Webber isn’t the only one in his family to have done the exchange. His younger sister also lived in France for a few months earlier this year. The Webber’s family ex-

“At the very least we should have a legal permission wall where people can paint freely in public,” he said. Amber and Sergio Santos couldn’t agree more. After doing successful art outreach in Brazil, they’re hoping to change attitudes here in Canada through projects such as Metamorphosis and last year’s Imaginarium exhibit at Oxygen Art Centre. “In Brazil everything started when we got invited to participate at city hall,” said Sergio. “We noticed the city had a hard perception of graffiti and we wanted to show them what graffiti is. It’s art and it’s paint on walls. It’s mostly paint where there is no beauty. We started cutting down that conservative perception of what is art, and it was successful.” Sergio hopes Nelson can have a similar attitude shift. “Graffiti here is associated with vandalism, and what we do is not vandalism. We’re not breaking anything, we’re beautifying.” Amber said they had a unique opportunity with the Peanut Gallery, because both the front and back walls face alleys. That means there are less rules and restrictions. Ultimately she’d like to see large-scale public art throughout Nelson, but she figures the alleys are a good place to start. “Alleyways can be associated with dark

change was organized through a program called En Famille, a non-profit organization that promotes full language immersion exchanges in France, Germany and Spain for students aged 9 to 16. Their mother, Tabatha, says the exchange gave her children a valuable experience and the opportunity to expand their knowledge of world affairs. “I believe that travel is a gift,” she said. “Children who travel to learn, will do it all their lives. It broadens their horizons and gives them memories that will last a lifetime. (Calix) enjoyed living with Rémi’s family and made lots of great friends there that he keeps in contact with.” The exchange also involves French students coming to live in the West Kootenay Region with the Webber family. One of the first things the newcomers notice? The landscape. “They are all amazed by the mountains and the trees,” said Tabatha, adding that her family has become well-versed in what the area has to offer. “Our family become real tour guides

for the time the kids were here. We have gone on hikes, to hockey games and visited the museums in the area. Remi has joined the Beaver Valley Little League Team and gymnastics. (Another exchange student) Albane joined Brownies and the Red Mountain Racers (while she was here).” In both France and Fruitvale, the students immerse themselves in the culture and activities of their new homes, and Tabatha says she would definitely recommend the program to other families all over the Kootenays. “Calix not only came home with beautiful French, but he also came home with many life lessons that exceeded my expectations. He is more confident, tolerant, compassionate, open-minded and academically motivated than ever before,” she said, adding that parents who are hesitant about the program shouldn’t be. “They follow the children, give parents support and guidance throughout the exchange and language evaluations. They

spend a lot of time getting to know the applying families to match them as well as possible.” From the student perspective, Webber also recommends making the move to France, or any other exchange country, to other kids his age. “I definitely recommend this experience, not every moment was memorable or even worth remembering but, I did have some very good times that I wouldn’t have done here in Canada,” he said. “I also saw things that I wouldn’t have ever seen in Canada. I think that it is important that people live in and learn about other countries because it gives you a chance to see the world in other parts, in a different way and it shows you a different perspective on how people live.” Tabatha’s daughter Meadow is currently in France, nearly finished her exchange after hosting her exchange sister, Albane, from September 2014 to February 2015. Bear sightings high this year liz Bevan West Kootenay Advertiser

in all areas for one day a week Call

Bears are out and about this time of year, with 15 sightings in the Greater Trail Area in just the past two weeks. Sharon Wieder with WildSafeBC says the number of sightings, including five black bears reported near Gyro Park, two in Sunningdale and more spread from Rossland to Montrose, isn’t unusual for this time of year. In fact, she expected to see more. “I haven’t heard of a lot of sightings this year, and I am kind of surprised with the snow melting so early,” she said. “I expected to hear more, but less is a good sign.

250-364-1413 ext 206

That means the bears are finding a lot of natural food, which must have sprouted earlier this year, which even with garbage around, is what they prefer to eat.” Bird feeders and household garbage are the number one attractants for bears in residential areas, so take down the feeder and lock up your trash. “It is always about the garbage,” she said. “Keep it locked up or keep it inside. It is really all you can do. If a bear has gotten food in a neighbourhood before, they will come back. They have amazing memories and they learn pretty quickly. Also, bird feeders. The calories in seeds are huge compared to their natural food. One kilogram of sunflower seeds is nearly 6,000 calories.”

Street closure flusters Nelson businesses

Work at the intersection of Hall and Baker streets in Nelson meant a traffic closure over the Mother’s Day weekend that left some business owners scrambling. Photo courtesy City of Nelson

A communication gaffe left business owners in the 600 block of Baker St. in Nelson frustrated over the Mother’s Day weekend. Nobody told them their block would be closed to traffic as part of the Stores to Shores downtown revitalization project. “We didn’t know it was happening,” said Judy Banfield, owner of Mountain Baby, a children’s store, where a Mother’s Day event was scheduled. “If I had known, I would’ve changed the date of my event. It was fine, but the attendance wasn’t anywhere near what I had expected and hoped for.” Chris Dawson, owner of Culinary Conspiracy, said he wasn’t trying to

be unduly critical, “but the city needs to communicate what they’re going to do ahead of time so we’re not scrambling to react to unforeseen circumstances.” “There was a communication gap between the city and the contractor on who was notifying which businesses and unfortunately some of the Baker St. businesses were missed,” city manager Kevin Cormack admitted. While acknowledging the mix-up, the city praised the actual work, noting contractor Maglio Installations excavated the intersection at Hall and Baker streets to make way for new water and sewer lines in less than four days.

Rilkoff’s luncheon Raj (pictured right) and Baljit Khehra of Rilkoff’s Store generously hosted a Mother’s Day East Indian lunch on the wekeend. The luncheon has become so successful over the years that this year, family and volunteers (pictured left) dished up for hours on both Saturday and Sunday. All the proceeds go to three local charities: Relay For Life, Habitat for Humanity, and the Rotary Club of Grand Forks will each receive $2,350 from the $7,050 total. The Khehras also donated door prizes — Tracy, Jules, Fern, Deb and Beth each take home hanging baskets. The family was quick to thank the volunteers and people of the community who supported the annual event. Photo by Della Mallette The Khehras invited representatives of the three charities to accept donations of $2,350 each. From left are Lynn Burch of the Rotary Club of Grand Forks, Raj and Baljit Khehra, Bob Huff and Irene Friesen of Habitat for Humanity, and Jennifer Edwards for Relay For Life.

Touchstones exhibit recognized nationally The Canadian Museums Association has awarded a Touchstones Nelson exhibit that hasn’t yet been shown in Nelson. Roll on Columbia, a multi-format exhibit about the Columbia River Treaty, was shown for three days at a conference in Spokane last fall. “Our national jury of museum professionals were unanimous,” said Audrey Vermette, director of programs and public affairs for the association. “They were

really impressed with the innovation in this exhibition. For a small museum in a small community to tackle an important social issue like the environment and water ecosystems is very brave, very innovative, and something other museums are hesitant to tackle.” Touchstones executive director Leah Best oversaw the project and enlisted writer Eileen Delehanty Pearkes and artist Deb Thompson as guest curators. The exhibit will open in Nelson in November.

Toma Villa, who lives at the mouth of the Columbia River, contributed The Water, the Wind, and the Sturgeon to Roll on Columbia, an exhibit produced by Touchstones Nelson that has won a national award. Submitted photo
