Hikers get a lucky break from helicopter A Victoria Day outing by two sisters on the Ripple Rock Trail turned into a search-and-rescue effort after the sisters left the trail and found themselves lost on the shoreline. Thanks to the assistance of an RCMP helicopter that happened to be working in the area, local searchand-rescue volunteers were able to quickly locate the women and return them unharmed to the trailhead. “They very wisely called for help on their cell phone sooner rather than later, so rescuers were able to mobilize while there was still plenty of daylight,” SAR spokesperson Tim Fairbank said in a written release. Fairbank said personnel in the RCMP helicopter quickly spotted the sisters, “which cut hours off the job of finding the women.” Campbell River Search and Rescue reminds the public to always take along supplies for unexpected situations when in the outdoors, and also to let someone know where you will be and when you expect to return.

Geographers advocate big changes for Campbellton Urban geography students from Vancouver Island University envi-
sion a whole new identity for Campbellton if the motivation and resources are there to make some minor – and some major – changes. Keltie Chamberlain, an urban
geographer research student from VIU, has been studying Campbellton for more than two years and has been instrumental in developing a Campbellton Action Plan.
She told council at its May 11 meeting that she focused her attention on Main Street, the stretch of Highway 19A between Tamarac and Maple streets, as well as on the river
project. Chamberlain suggested that creating access to the Campbell River, which runs behind the businesses

along Campbellton’s Main Street, should be a top priority. “The concept plan is for the end of Maple Street, to include parking with decorative barriers, wildlife viewing platforms, interpretive signs, lighting, and a gateway,” Chamberlain said. “The area can be used for public access and recreation and it creates an amenity for the neighbourhood as well as promoting healthy communities. “These spaces are ones which will build on the identity and character of the river.” The Campbellton Neighbourhood Association, a group of Campbellton residents and businesses working to improve the area, has worked in tandem
with the VIU students and is proposing to install five different viewing platforms along the river to make it accessible to tourists and Campbell River residents. There are currently no view points along the south shore of the Campbell River between the end of the Myrt Thompson Trail and the logging bridge upriver. The vision is to develop a small park area off the road near River Sportsman and the bridge that connects Campbellton with northern Campbell River. The Campbellton Neighbourhood Association is also looking at developing and clearing out the area near the end of Maple Street and the
Myrt Thompson Trail. While the river project has been gaining traction with both the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association and the VIU students, there are also other ideas for revitalizing the northern end of the city. C hamb erlain s aid t he Campbellton Action Plan also includes ideas for how to spruce up Main Street (aka Highway 19A). “We found the challenges on Main Street are both aesthetic and safety,” Chamberlain said. “We found that poles are in strange spots and there’s a lack of connectivity for pedestrians.” The students propose moving the utility lines and wires underground, adding cross-
walks and sidewalks. Cheaper suggestions to improve the area include: murals, awnings on store fronts, street planting, painting the utility poles, brightly painted crosswalks, and uniquely shaped bike racks. Coun. Ron Kerr said he was pleased to see the work that’s gone into studying the neighbourhood. “I think the partnership with the CNA (Campbellton Neighbourhood Association) has been really positive and I think there’s a bright future for them,” Kerr said. Mayor Andy Adams agreed. “It’s been a great partnership and we hope you continue the work in our community that you developed.”
Busy power lines and wires clutter Campbellton’s main drag – Highway 19A.

The Strathcona Regional District paid out $4.24 million to its employees and elected officials combined last year. Regional District staff made up the greatest chunk of that, collecting $3.93 million in remuneration. Russ Hotsenpiller, the regional district’s chief administrative officer, topped the list, earning $137,747 last year, followed by Tom Yates, the regional district’s corporate services manager, at $109,263. The next top earners were Yves Bienvenu, current Strathcona Gardens facility manager, at $82,146, Lorne Parker, operations manager at Strathcona Gardens, who earned $80,545 and Susan Bullock, programs manager at Strathcona Gardens, who collected $77,668 in remuneration. The regional district paid out a further $3.24 million to other employees with remuneration and expenses of less than $75,000. Among elected officials, Director Jim Abram earned the most last year as chair of the board, with remuneration of $61,121. His expenses were $18,443 last year. Our View
Scientific freedom of speech is not just a right, it’s a job description Federal public scientists want the protection of their right to speak freely enshrined in their collective agreements. First of all, before we get into anything, let’s take a moment to remember that freedom of speech is their right as citizens of a democracy and specifically their rights as Canadians. But aside from that, there is a great public interest in government-paid and/or funded scientists being able to exercise their right to freedom of speech. In fact, beyond being a right, it should be part of their job description. There is some room for confidentiality in the process of disseminating information by scientists who are specifically hired to find out the truth of We say: Federal things. You can’t have scientists need to them just blasting their mouths off. The same be able to work standards of accuracy, without interfence honesty and corroboration should apply to their opinions as they do to their research and the publicizing of that research. But as the ultimate employer of these scientists, the taxpayers own their research and therefore have a right to know everything about it. They answer to the citizens of this country not to the politicians. Truth in science is more important today than ever. We here on the West Coast know that as well as anybody as we weigh conflicting claims regarding crucial fish science and the environment. We need to be able to depend on our taxpayer-funded scientists to tell us what the facts are. The Stephen Harper Conservatives have done a disservice to the citizens of this country by muzzling scientists and hacking scientific research to bits. The information researchers uncover belong to us and our public scientists need to feel safe enough to express their informed opinions. What’s more, publicly-funded science should be neutral and unbiased. No corporate interference is acceptable. This is not science for sale. It’s science for the public good.

The experiment in Europe has come full circle where pedestrians and bikers were considered to be the second lowest and lowest priority on lane ways and through the evolutionary process were elevated to the priority level of rights of way. This choked off the flow of consumers from shopping venues and it was ascertained that people who walk and ride bikes aren’t the biggest spenders when it comes to consumer products. Children are an investment in our future Council last week heard from an advocate of a plan to move early childhood education under the umbrella of the provincial government and create affordable childcare for families. Under the plan, the B.C. ministry of education would subsidize childcare costs, and parents would be left to pay just $10 a day for full-time childcare, $7 for part-time care and daycare would be free for families with annual incomes of less than $40,000. While some on council were supportive, not all were ready to jump head first into endorsing the plan, as several other local governments have, including our School District 72. Having not had a lot of time to consider the initiative, council chose to hold off on making any decisions until its next council meeting. Fair enough, but I hope council comes around and lends its support. Something needs to be done. Dr. Tanya Flood with Success by Six provided some alarming statistics for council in February. and the extra funds could be directed toward the plan. Advocates of the plan also argue that because more parents would be able to afford to go to work, the cost would be offset by an increase in taxes going to the province on the additional income being spent. The province of Quebec invests $2.2 billion each year to offer universal childcare at a $7 per day rate. In 2008, it’s estimated that both the Quebec provincial government and the federal government made $900 million over and above the additional costs incurred by paying for universal childcare. And it induced nearly 70,000 more mothers to enter the workforce. McPhee told council that in B.C., such a plan is estimated to return $2.54 to the economy on ever dollar spent on the $10 a day plan. As Coun. Larry Samson so eloquently put it following McPhee’s presentation, “there is no greater asset than our children for our future and now. It’s an investment now for our future and it’s an investment for our children’s future.” Who can argue with that?

Editorial does not reflect majority opinion I am writing this letter as I was extremely disturbed by your Black Press editorial (Campbell River Mirror May 1, 2015) entitled ‘Less will be the norm’. I have since discovered that this same editorial was published simultaneously in a number of Black Press local newspapers. The anonymous writer of this editorial takes the stance that public health care is unaffordable and we should be supporting the expansion of private health care facilities. In my view, this statement does not reflect the viewpoint of a majority of Canadians. Over the last few years, health care costs are not, as the Editorial says, “spiraling” as there has been little change in health care allocations as a percentage of government budgets. Better and more timely access to doctors, specialists and needed medical procedures could be achieved by federal and provincial governments instantly if they prioritized public health care over such things as spending billions of our taxpayer dollars on political advertising, supporting unnec-

health care will continue to weaken the public health care system. Taking vitally needed doctors and specialists out of the public health care system will actually cost the Canadian taxpayer much, much more in the long run at a time when many Canadians can afford climbing private health care less and less. In addition, private medical companies obtain increased profits from doing the “easier” health care procedures in a privatized model of health care and leaving the more complex health care operations to the public system. Black Press has some less than comfortable bed fellows in taking the less is more stance. Promoting private health care facilities is more reflective of the opinions of Dr. Brian Day whose court case is trying to justify his and other medical corporations’ private for-profit health clinics. As well, the current federal government under Prime Minister Harper has not renewed the Health Accord. This will inevitably result in smaller medical transfer payments to the prov-
inces and encourage more private medical care. In B.C., our provincial government and the Health Care Authorities it created some 15 years ago are proposing to contract out surgeries to private clinics rather than adequately funding operating rooms and hiring enough staff for hospitals to perform these surgeries. We truly can do without this kind of “smoke and mirrors” reasoning, as displayed in your editorial, to justify privatization of health care. Expect during the coming months a pushback against political parties, groups and individuals espousing public health care cutbacks and privatization. Canadians young and old are concerned enough about keeping our public health care system intact and expanding it that they will voice that increasingly loudly and, hopefully, will vote against politicians supporting the ongoing breakup of Medicare in Canada. men whereby pedestrians and bikers are once again at the bottom for considerations of traffic flow. Dogwood is an example of how screwed up a thing can get when lights do not react to the major flow of traffic and give equal consideration for one or two vehicles showing up on side roads never mind the 20 or 30 units that have to wait for a timed interval. The pedestrian crosswalks are another irritant. Lights are set to flashing for one walker and remain flashing for 20 seconds for some unknown reason and when they are about to change another pedestrian shows up to reactivate the lights once
essary military action, public surveillance, and subsidizing big business. Some of the increasing costs of public health care can be chalked up to the increasing use of Public Private Partnerships in building hospitals and health care facilities – with billions of dollars being siphoned from the public health care budgets to enable huge medical corporations to reap excessive profits – all money that could have been used for improving and expanding our public health care programs and services. Most Canadians of all political stripes still support universal public Medicare and do not want the for-profit health care system of the United States where getting needed medical care depends on how much money you have. As well, health care coalitions, health care unions, Canadians Doctors For Medicare and many other groups oppose privatization of health care. Time and again, Canadians have done the math, added up the figures and proved that privatizing
again forcing another 20 second wait. I’ve seen this sequence repeated as many as three or four times. The lights should have a five second time out with a reactivation freeze for 30 or 40 seconds. The multiples of new four way stops that have popped up are ridiculous, several of them are within a 20 second walk to an existing controlled crosswalk. Planning your route to allow ease of access is a choice that can be made before you find yourself in an impossible situation trying to make a left turn. Exiting the Tyee Plaza parking lot can be made easy if you consider before hand a right turn out of the north west exit or a right turn at the south west exit

The city is stepping up to help BroomBusters in its quest to eradicate Scotch broom within the city. Council, at its May 11 meeting, approved giving the Campbell River chapter of BroomBusters $1,000 to cover the cost of signs, clippers, garbage bags and gloves. BroomBusters, which is co-organized by Morgan Ostler and Carol Couture, has been cutting ‘broom in bloom’ since 2013. Since then, volunteers have cleared broom from all four of the major entrances to the city, as well as spots in Campbellton and a section of Highway 28 west of Haig Brown House. This year, BroomBusters is putting its efforts into removing the bright yellow broom that’s growing along Jubilee Parkway. In addition to the funding, council also voted to have city staff work with BroomBusters to coordinate communication material and improve broom cut collection and disposal options. That will include having the city logo on ‘Cut Broom in Bloom’ signs put up in areas where broom is being removed, as well as tailoring the pickup of broom piles. Coun. Ron Kerr, a staunch supporter of broom removal groups including Greenways Land Trust and its

annual Broom Bash, praised BroomBusters for its efforts. “They’ve been out cutting broom for the past couple of weeks and they, as well as Greenways, have been doing great things in the community to clean up the broom,” Kerr said. Coun. Charlie Cornfield said while it’s nice to see groups doing something to control the spread of broom, there are areas being missed. He said he would like to see a priority list of areas around the community that need to be focused on, such as the Tyee Spit where broom is gaining a foothold. “What I see is – maybe it’s just me – but I don’t see a coordinated effort in which areas are prioritized,” Cornfield said. “I see the efforts of volunteers, be it Greenways or BroomBusters or others that go out and cut broom, and I’m wondering who is doing the prioritizing of the areas that get treated, because
I think that’s extremely important. That it isn’t a free-for-all, that people just pick an area that they want to do. It’s got to have rational sense.” Council agreed with Cornfield and directed city staff to co-ordinate and prioritize treatment areas with BroomBusters and other volunteer groups that cut broom. Meanwhile, the city has also been doing its part in fighting the spread of broom. Coun. Kerr thanked the city crews that have been out cutting broom along Highway 19A near the Quadra ferry terminal and along the side of the Dogwood Street hill leading into downtown. Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, said city crews will remove broom growing in small patches and they also target broom that pops up in city parks. “We have for the most part eliminated broom from usable places in
our parks,” Milnthorp said. “We do the maintenance work and if we see broom starting to grow, we definitely take it out.” Scotch broom is an alien species that kills native plants, takes over vacant lots, is highly flammable and causes allergic reactions. It’s believed to have first been introduced to Vancouver Island in 1850 when travellers from Europe brought the plant to Sooke. The plant, which spreads like wildfire, has made its way north and is prevalent along the Inland Island Highway. It typically blooms near the end of April until the beginning of June and prevents forest re-growth and is toxic to grazing animals. It spreads rapidly on trails, forest roads and under power lines. For more information on BroomBusters and its efforts to eliminate broom, visit www. broombusters.org/campbellriver.html

Chamber panel to put spotlight on state of education Local business and industry can become — and remain — competitive through continued investment in the development of human capital. The Campbell River Chamber of Commerce believes that education is one of the most important investments in the future economic prosperity of our region and province and that the business community, the providers of economic prosperity, should have the opportunity to help shape direction. An opportunity to hear what the state of education is in our community from kindergarten through to post-secondary and municipal government areas of focus will be the topic of discussion at the upcoming Chamber Luncheon on Thursday, May 21, at Sequoia Springs golf course. Panelists include Mayor Andy Adams sharing highlights from the new four-year municipal plan; Randall Heidt, VP Strategic Initiatives North Island College (NIC) speaking to innovation

A ‘different’ kind of garden sale
T
he Campbell River Grandmothers to Grandmothers (G2G) are hosting a unique garden experience that will brighten the day, as well as the patios and gardens, of those who attend. On Saturday May 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Sybil Andrews Cottage in Willow Point is the site for a different kind of plant sale, combined with a sale of garden-themed crafts, and a refreshing, relaxing tea. Different from most other plant sales, at this event, plants are already nestled into pleasing arrangements in baskets and colourful containers. Vegetables and herbs are combined with flowers and foliage in readyto-display vessels. Varieties from tiny Forget-me-Nots to sturdy Rhododendrons are potted and ready for your yard or patio. (The usual small plastic pots with starter plants are also available for buyers to combine into their own creations.) These arrangements have been thoughtfully created by knowledgeable local gardeners,
Jane Toso, Carol Seeley, Robin Geary and Sally Wilson, all members of the local Grandmothers to Grandmothers group. Other members have created garden-themed crafts including scarves, purses, bags, aprons and microwave bowl potholders for the sale. Darlene Hawes has coordinated the project. To refresh shoppers on a busy Saturday, tea with tasty home-baked treats is being offered in the Cottage garden,
for the small price of a donation to the Grandmothers Campaign. The Grandmothers Campaign provides funding for grandmothers in Africa raising children orphaned by AIDS. In the nine years since its inception, this arm of the Stephen Lewis Foundation has contributed over $22 million dollars to social programs and health services. Of that, the grand-

mothers groups on Vancouver Island have so far raised $2.2 million, with over $61,00 of that coming from the Campbell River group. The African grandmothers, whose own children have died of AIDS, have benefited from the support for the many needs of their growing grandchildren, from the basics of food and shelter, to the hope that comes from education and the love of a caring family member.

Monsters wreak havoc at speedway The Monster Trucks of Port Orchard, Washington’s Straight Up Racing team ripped up Saratoga over the May Long weekend. In their first visit to the track in the 2015 season, Rockstar and California Kid hit some amazing jumps on both days of the weekend doubleheader, with plenty of very fast donuts mixed in. The I.M.C.A Modifieds also made their first appearance of the year to highlight the action on Saturday, accompanied by the Crash to Pass cars, Hornet cars, Roadrunners and the Bomber cars on Sunday. In Saturday’s main e vents, Ryan Guest topped the Roadrunner class after winning the heat race; Chris Beaulieu took advantage of a blown transmission by leader Travis Stevenson on the final lap to claim the 35-lap Modified main; and Sheldon Hopp claimed his second straight Crash to Pass main by holding off Jeff May in the 20-lap feature. In Hornets action, Kevin Lawrenuk swept to the A Main win while Rowland Westra took the

B Main. Sunday night saw more of the same tight racing, with even more monster truck action on display. Another 15-lap Roadrunner main saw Ryan Guest take home his third straight main win, once again holding off Stevenson to take it home. Westra held off Ashley White to repeat in the Hornet B Main and Daryl Cahill snapped Lawrenuk’s two-race winning streak by claiming the A Main.
Hopp was another repeat winner, taking the Crash to Pass division for his third win in four weekend races. Extra laps … This weekend marks the second round of Drifting and Drag racing at Saratoga Speedway. Time Attack, a new event to Saratoga, will also be on the card on Saturday. Two weeks ago the track drew 11 Drifters and 18 Drag racers take to the track, with another great field expected this weekend.

The Campbell River Gymnastics Association duo of Quinn Kuschel-Ross and Liam Deagle helped Team BC to the gold medal in the Level 4 Open division and also brought home plenty of individual hardware in the 2015 Western Canadian Championships in Okotoks, Alberta, last week. Both CRGA competitors won individual championships. Kuschel-Ross won the Western Canadian championship on the
rings while adding a silver medal on the parallel bars and a bronze on the pommel horse. Deagle won the Western championship on the floor exercise and finished seventh in the finals of the vault and 14th in the all-round competition. The Western Canadian Championship was the final competition for the pair for the year and they will now begin preparing for next season.

Hunter tracks down record Campbell River Christian School’s Joanna Williams swept to a pair of distance-running titles and Carihi’s Hayley Hunter set a new record in the javelin throw to highlight performances by local athletes in the annual Vancouver Island High School Track and Field Championships last week in Victoria. Williams claimed the senior girls 3,000-metre title in 10 minutes, 32.33 seconds, winning by more than 24 seconds, and added the 1,500metre steeplechase, in 5:24.00. In the junior division, Carihi’s Hunter shattered the Island meet record while winning the javelin throw with a mark of 38.91 metres. That easily surpassed the year-old record of 35.89, set by Reynolds Secondary’s
Kelsey Carrothers. Nathan Downey of CRCS claimed the senior boys 1,500 race walk by more than a minute. Tekarra Reierson of Carihi won the senior girls 400-metre hurdles in 1:04.26. In second place after her preliminary heat, Reierson improved her time by nearly three seconds to claim the championship. Carihi also won the senior girls 4x400-metre relay in 4:08.80. In the Grade 8-9 division, Timberline’s Joelle Gilkin doubled with wins in the girls 800 metres, in 2:32.72, and the girls 1,500, in 5:25.72. Top finishers qualified for the B.C. High School championships June 4-6 at Mcleod Athletic Park in Langley. More at www.campbellrivermirror.com.

But that was the only threat the Whalers would mount, as Goodliffe closed the period with back-toback goals and Sweet opened the second with a pair of his own. 10-8 and, with time ticking down below the fourminute mark, converted his third goal of the period to make it 10-9 with 3:37 remaining. That touched off a land rush, with Wyatt Aarts tying the game 24 seconds later with a shot that was initially stopped before rolling slowly behind the goalie and into the Alberni net. Maddex Frazee was next on the board, getting free behind the defence for a fast break game-winner at 17:56. Perhaps fittingly, Banman added a final insurance score with 1:13 to play. It was his fourth goal, all coming in the decisive third period. Tristen Watson added a hat trick for the Ravens, and Ty Easton and Frazee each finished with two goals. The Ravens return to action tonight with a home matchup against Comox Valley at 6:30.

Campbell River’s novice Ravens lacrosse team picked a dramatic way to collect its first win, storming from behind with the final five goals to post a 12-10 win over previously unbeaten Alberni Valley in Vancouver Island Minor Lacrosse action at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. Trailing 8-6 entering the third period, despite outshooting the visiting Tyees 30-14, the Ravens (1-3-2) got a goal from Carter Banman early in the third to trim the deficit to 8-7. But that score held up until the middle of the period, and Alberni (4-1-1) buried two goals in the span of a minute and a half to build a seemingly comfortable 10-7 edge with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. As it turned out, the Ravens had plenty left in the tank. Banman scored again at 11:35 to make it
