RDEK celebrates areas F and G volunteers The Regional District of East Kootenay has formally recognized its 2015 Electoral Area F and G Volunteers of the Year. Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth says Area F Volunteers of the Year Terry and Shirley White have touched many lives with their kindness. “The Whites are active in their community through the Lions Club and both have dedicated many hours to the Columbia Valley Arts Council. Beyond that, they also give personally – whether it’s
helping a family in distress, finding information for someone or just making them feel cared about through their giving ways. Their impact on this community was clearly demonstrated by the wonderful turnout at the Resort last night as we presented them with a gift of our appreciation.” Over 75 people attended the Area F Town Hall Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation celebration in Fairmont last night. Terry and Shirley White (left) and Vi Wittman were recognized as the 2015 Electoral Area F and G Volunteers of the Year. Year Vi Wittman has also been recognized for her years service to the community of Edgewater. “It’s hard to summarize the contributions Vi has made to our community,” says Area G Director Gerry Wilkie. “She and her husband worked
hard to build the ball diamond, which was named Wittman Field in their honour. They spent endless hours teaching the children of Edgewater and surrounding areas about sportsmanship and how to play ball.” In her 14 years with the Royal Canadian
Legion, Wittman has held every office except Membership Chair and through her efforts, Edgewater now has a permanent tribute to veterans. “A few years ago, the Royal Canadian Legion decided it needed a Cenotaph to honour the veterans from this area.
Vi offered to walk from Edgewater to Invermere if people would pledge her per kilometre. She got pledges and spent a few weeks walking every day with a friend until she’d walked the distance. Today, Edgewater has a beautiful Cenotaph complete with flowers and green grass. This is all thanks to Vi as she has planted the flowers, mowed the grass and looked after the Cenotaph’s upkeep for well over 10 years,” adds Wilkie. Wittman is also well known for helping neighbours in need. She was formally recognized at the Area G Town Hall Meeting and Volunteer of the Year celebration in Edgewater on May 6.

The Weekend View
B.C. Views: Farmland for climate change
by Tom Fletcher It was 2008 when word first surfaced that B.C. farmland was being bought up to grow trees as a European carbon offset. Reckitt Benckiser Inc., a British-based global manufacturer of household products such as Lysol spray and Calgon laundry soap, bought 1,500 hectares east of Vanderhoof and planted aspen. For comparison, that’s about the size of downtown Vancouver from 16th and Oak to Stanley Park. Since tree growing is permitted in the Agricultural Land Reserve, a use intended for fruit, ornamental or nursery trees, no permission was needed. And to meet the carbon offset rules of the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change, a 100-year restrictive covenant against harvesting trees was issued by B.C.’s land titles office. Goodbye farmland. After that deal, the B.C. government changed legislation in 2011 to require permission from the Agricultural Land Commission to make these covenants valid. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick says he is waiting for that process to be tested. It likely will be soon. Reckitt has bought another 7,000 hectares of cleared farmland from

Prince George down through the Cariboo to Quesnel. NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham has been tracking these acquisitions, and she says there are more deals in the works. Last fall, the Bulkley Nechako Regional District wrote to Victoria Wood, Reckitt Benckiser’s “global head of sustainability,” telling her that “the planting of trees on centrally located and productive agricultural lands is not appropriate” and would weaken local farm economies. Wood responded that the RB Trees project targets only “marginally productive” land such as pasture, abandoned farms or those that have been up for sale for long periods. Former Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson raised the issue in the legislature in 2008, noting that Crown land near Vanderhoof had been sold for farming, bought by a numbered company and then “flipped” for around $1 million to RB Trees. Now mayor of Quesnel, Simpson takes issue with the company’s claims with his usual shyness. “It’s bull----,” he told me. “This isn’t marginal land.” He said it includes prime alfalfa fields and historical ranch and forage crop lands. In one case, neighbours found out about the new use when they saw a helicopter spraying herbicide to prepare the area for tree seedlings. In the Cariboo as in other rural B.C. areas, aging farmers want to

retire and young people keen to work seven days a week are in short supply. So naturally there is pressure to sell. Perhaps Letnick is right, and the ALC will stop productive farmland from being turned back into forest. While we’re waiting for that, here are a couple of other questions. What happens when these forests burn? The first big forest fire of 2015 grew out of control near Prince George last week. And since aspen doesn’t last 100 years, what is its real carbon offset value? How’s that European carbon trading market doing? It’s a mess, with the cost of emitting a tonne of carbon dioxide fallen far below what’s needed to be effective, and Interpol investigating various schemes to game the system. Remember B.C’s own Pacific Carbon Trust? This Gordon Campbell brainchild to sell carbon offsets was quietly greenhouse gassed after the Auditor General revealed its first two big projects were of questionable value to say the least. Finally, does anyone really think that returning B.C.’s scarce farmland to forest is a good way to change the weather? Would it offset the loss of local production and trucking in farm produce from elsewhere? And where are B.C.’s tireless food security advocates on this dubious scheme? Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @tomfletcherbc Email: tfletcher@blackpress.ca.

OUTER SPACE Creating an outdoor oasis Creative container gardens No matter the area in which you live you can face a number of challenges when it comes to gardening. Whether it is limitation of space or pesky deer wanting to enjoy your plants before you get to indulge yourself, container gardening has grown immensely the last ten years due to ability to solve so many problems. The days of a simple geranium basket hanging by the door are long over. We can plant the traditional baskets or tubs, maybe an old barrel or even an old
bathtub. The possibilities are endless, as long as you take into consideration some key factors to help you remain successful. In which ever container you decide to plant in, make sure you have adequate drainage. If whatever you choose doesn’t have drainage holes, you can provide drainage by adding gravel or styrofoam into the bottom of the container. The next key factor to consider is your potting soil. This is crucial, since all pot-
ting soils are not created equally. Good potting soils allows roots to breathe and flourish compared to using local topsoils in containers that will compact during the summer months. Other factors that are available are potting medias that contain water polymer. These little gel like crystals help to absorb and retain moisture, which in turn helps your container to last longer between waterings. Some potting mixes also contain slow release fertilizer. Keep in mind how-
ever, that most plants need more than this to exist all summer and flourish. There are also now available organic mixtures for vegetable containers. These are a nice mix, being a little heavier and having all of the organic compounds like kelp and fish soil already added into them. So, always ask what the options are and even what sizes will make sense for your project. The next consideration is where your container will go. For flowers you need to know if it is sunny or
shady. We consider anything less than 6 hours to be a shady situation. Success in these applications will vary greatly on what plants you choose. If you are planting vegetables they will do best in full sun situations. Plant breeders have even developed vegetable plants specific for containers. From eggplants and squash that are perfect for patio containers to tomatoes that thrive in hanging baskets, the choices grow every year. Just remember, veggies in containers are big
growers and producers and will need regular fertilization. The best choice is a water soluble variety, since it will accessible to the plant immediately. Big enough containers even allow potatoes and root crop like carrots to flourish. Lots of gardeners do perennial crops like strawberries in containers. To help these guys make it through winter, sink the container in the ground for winter. This will protect the plant from the cold of winter. The choices in flow-
ers for containers has grown immensely in the last few years as well. Plant varieties like Proven Winners, have been developed by plant breeders, to be the hardiest and lowest maintenance plants around. This helps even the novice gardeners to be successful. Join the trend. Container gardening is growing and the choices are endless. Just follow some of the tips above to help ensure success and give it a try. Happy gardening.

Black belt instructors Jennifer Wachon, Rene Kowalchuk and Simon Wachon expertly coached members of Evolution Tae KwonDo Academy, based on Seventh Avenue South in Cranbrook, to success at the acclaimed International Canadian hosted Competition. Madison Wheadon in the girls junior high grade division was the first to compete on the Saturday winning some hard fought sparring rounds but not quite making it into the medalling positions. Public Input On Idlewild Lake We would like your input on the future of Idlewild Lake and Park. As a result of recent assessments on the dam at Idlewild Lake, the water levels will be lowered to protect public safety. Cranbrook City Council recognizes the significance of Idlewild Lake to our residents and park users, and is seeking funding to replace the dam and restore the lake. The City sees potential opportunities to enhance and redevelop the park during the dam’s reconstruction. Please provide your input on the future of Idlewild Park by completing a survey on the City website. Paper copies are available for pick-up at Leisure Services or reception at City Hall. The deadline for the survey is Monday May 25, 2015.

Roses! And What's New for 2015
Today we are going to talk roses, and some of the new ones we are growing this year. Did you know, that we grow all of our roses at our production site right here in Cranbrook? Well we certainly do, and it's one of our crops that we are especially proud of. About the first week in May, when life is crazy and hectic, I go to this greenhouse and just sit and have my lunch in the middle of it. The smell is unbelievable with all the roses blooming and needless to say the sights are incredible too. And every year our Nursery Manager, Tara, impresses us all with some new beauties. Whether you are a gardener with roses already planted, or a new gardener looking to expand into some beautiful blooms here are some new and exciting choices for you to consider. Remember, if the rose is in a round pot, that means it’s a toughy and a good one for someone that wants low maintenance. And if its in a square pot, remember to mulch it and protect it a bit going into winter. 1. “Never Alone Rose;” we are especially proud of this new beauty. Bred and produced by the CNLA with a partnership of the CFL alumni, the proceeds of this extremely hardy, beautiful red and white rose, go to help folks battling cancer. Their vision is that no one should have to face cancer alone. We agree and are proud to have this rose in our collection this year. Being developed in Manitoba, its a hardy, round potted variety! 2. Bill Reid: At first I thought this may be a relation to our Nursery manager with the same last name, but instead it is named after a famous Canadian artist famous for bringing the art of Indigenous People of the Northwest Coast to light. This yellow rose that resembles sunshine is very disease resistant, will tolerate many soil types and is known for repeat blooming. It grows 90cm high and 70cm wide and in true Canadian form is hardy to zone 3. Now these next few are a part of the Clean n Easy Tea roses. They are new and exciting tea and floribunda roses that produce amazing bouquet style blooms, have incredible disease resistance and are extremely easy to grow compared to a lot of tea roses. A. Eternal Flame; A very large, blooming yellow rose with a strong citrus fragrance. Excellent disease resistance and they make ideal cut flowers. Gets 3-4 feet tall. B. Souvenir de Baden Baden : This elegant rose has creamy hues of pink blooms and crenated petals that have a strong fruity scent. It reaches 3-4 feet and is extremely disease resistant. C. Brother's Grimm; This is an award winning rose that gets excellent ratings for vigour and disease resistance. Flashy orange with yellow reverse blooms that turn to a soft pink as they mature. Very full blooms on a 2-3 foot plant. Simply stunning! D. Poseidon; Named after the Greek God, this rose lives up to its name. Exquisitely cupped, lavender blue rosettes pack in over 50 petals each. This rose gets simply covered in blooms. disease resistant. Gets 3-4 feet in size. E. Laguna; It's a stunning climber!! Intensely fragrant, deep pink rose, that blooms in clusters of 6-8 flowers. Has a dark green, shiny foliage and gets 8 feet in height. Plant this where visitors go by, it's that pretty and fragrant. Remember these are just some of the beauties we grow. They love sun, and with some care can provide you with years of enjoyment and flowers for your table. Ask any of experts for help on selections and planting guides. We want you to succeed. I tell people when planting any tree or shrub to do it right. We often see people buy shrubs to plant and just dig a hole and put it in. They never consider adding good soil,or fertilizer or how to even plant it properly. Ask, we can help! Till next week..happy gardening!

3 Facts You Need To Know About...
Forest Fire Risk This Year 1. There have been twice as many forest fires in our Southeast region this year (25) as there were last year (12). It is warmer and drier in SE BC this spring than in the recent past and snow load is way down, so this fire season could be a bad one. 2. All 25 fires in the SE so far have been caused by humans. Unsafe campfire use and unsafe spring burning on properties are examples of how wildfires that threaten our communities are started by the people who live amongst us. 3. Before you start a fire on crown land or private property, be sure you know what restrictions are in place: http://bcwildfire.ca/ hprScripts/WildfireNews/ Bans.asp . And please report any unattended fire or wildfire to 1-800-663-555 or *5555 on your cell phone.

A uniquely Indian and grand car show By Nigel Matthews India’s finest exhibition of vintage automobiles and motorcycles is the Cartier “Travel with Style” Concours

The other person responsible for the event is the renowned Indian automotive historian and expert, His Highness Rana Manvendra Singh of Barwani who hand picks some of the rarest restored and preserved vintage automobiles from across India. The Cartier Concours, which began in 2008, has generated great excitement amongst Indian collectors. More owners are now taking an interest in maintaining and restoring their cars to the high standards required for such an international event. The following year there were four cars in Bombay. Jamshedji Tata an Indian pioneer industrialist, who founded the Tata Group, which has grown into India’s largest conglomerate company, owned one of them. Ratan Tata, who is the great grandson of the company founder and Chairman Emeritus of Tata & Son, was at the Concours and enjoying a personal inspection of the cars on display as we performed our judging duties. Tata purchased Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford in 2008 for $2.6 billion. I’m sure Mr. Tata enjoyed viewing the 1951 Jaguar MKV, it’s a pity there weren’t any old Series I Land Rovers present. The Maharajas possessed an

Having lost a number of significantly important cars, the Indian Government put measures into place to protect their automotive heritage by eliminating the export of cars from India. It is also extremely difficult to import a vehicle manufactured after Jan 1st 1950 into the country without being subjected to as much as 181 percent duty. To summarize the event, it is unique and it is India’s closest comparison to the most famous event in the world the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It is a comparatively young event, which focuses on India’s automotive heritage, unlike Pebble Beach. Things to See & Do Hugs: To the person who found my keys by the swimming pool last week and took the time to drop them off at Save-On-Foods and Hugs to the employee who took the time to look up my contact info from my save-on card on my key chain and called me to let me know they were at customer service! Slugs: To the people who live at the re-use center and sell that free stuff on Facebook. People who are in need are going without because you are trying to make a buck. Hugs: To my favorite Cranbook Firefighter (DK) and his beautiful daughter (B) for moving in a loaned chair while I was in hospital. This chair is wonderful and so nice to have while recuperating from hip surgery. Thank you. Hugs: hugs, hugs to Dr. Buckley and the wonderful team of
nurses on the 2nd floor for their wonderful care and amazing teamwork during my medical crisis. So comforting to know I was in such capable, caring, attentive care. Made that whole experience much less frightening. Thank you. While I don’t remember, I am told I had the same quick teamwork in the OR as well. Cranbrook citizens, our local hospital and employees are AWESOME. Hugs: To you Shannon for this column. What a wonderful way to acknowledge the wonderful folk in Cranbrook. Hugs: to the best & kindest and most helpful staff at the Safeway Gas bar. Anyone that has any kind of discomfort or needs assistance with fueling up, these gals are the best. Hugs: Hugs and more hugs to my wonderful family for the terrific birthday they gave me on the 18th of April. Also hugs
to the many friends I received gifts and cards from. Bless you all! Hugs: To my “favorite” son-inlaw for a speedy recovery on his recent surgery. Hugs: Hats off to Ryan and his team of professionals at Cranbrook Auto Repairs for the prompt courteous manner in repairing my car. Their team came highly recommended to me for their trustworthiness. As a first time senior customer, I am truly impressed and will be back for any service in the future. Your team certainly earned your many awards of the year for vehicle repairs. Hugs: A giant hug to Custom Stereo for going that extra kilometer to get my new car stereo working exactly right! Thank you so very much!

60
th
Year! (1955 - 2015)
Servicing the Moving & Storage needs and requirements of families and businesses in Cranbrook and the East Kootenay.
In 1955 Cranbrook being a small growing town two trucking Company acquaintances George Williams of Williams Transfer in Vancouver and Walter Millar of Millar and Brown Freightways in Cranbrook decided that the town was growing large enough to support a moving and storage business, so as equal partners created a new business… Williams Moving and Storage (Cranbrook) Ltd. Originally the company was operated in a small area in the Millar and Brown building in downtown Cranbrook with one truck and two employees. As the population of Cranbrook and the East Kootenays increased so did warehouse requirements so land was purchased on Kootenay Street and in the early 60s a 5,000 square foot warehouse and office was built. As the city and population increased in size so did warehousing requirements and two additions were added over the next ten years bringing the total square footage to 27,000. In 1974 with Gary Stepney accepting the position as manager he and his wife Joan relocated from Vancouver to Cranbrook. With Gary and Joan now in an owner’s position, the company continued to expand, purchasing two mini storages and another 10,000 square foot warehouse in Cranbrook. Later in the decade a Moving and Storage Company was purchased in Lethbridge and two years later a mini storage complex was built on the excess land to complement the existing facility.
Gary and Joan have now retired from the day to day operation and in their place, their son Cory, who has been part of the business all his life, starting as garbage boy earning 25¢ per hour and now progressing to General Manager of both the Cranbrook and Lethbridge operations. The company has continued its growth from its original roots in 1955 of two employees, one truck and a corner of a building to present day of six buildings, 80,000 feet of warehousing, 30 employees ( many with over 25 years of service with the company) and in excess of 80 pieces of equipment. Being a shareholder of United Van Lines (Canada) gives the company the expertise needed to provide the professional and knowledgeable assistance whether moving across the street, across Canada or throughout the World.
For information on any of your moving requirements contact Cory Stepney or Earl Duchscherer at toll free 1-888-577-5588 or Cranbrook at 250-426-4271.
