Parks are a priority
Blazing a trail
Council wants advisory committee Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD
Investment in local parks has been lacking for the past few years, according to Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. But that is about to change. Mission council is focusing its attention on the district’s more than 20 municipal parks, looking for ways to make them more user-friendly and attractive to both long-time residents and newcomers. “We are recognizing that livability is a huge thing in this community. We know we have a lot of parks and areas of this community that have very little infrastructure. There’s not much there for families,” said Hawes. “This is a priority issue that has to be addressed.” Playgrounds, bathrooms and programming are needed in many of the parks, which previous councils were not inclined to spend money on, said Hawes. “If you’re not investing, then you’re basically just picking up pieces of ground and developing what I call moose pasture. “To the best of our ability we’re going to put some money behind this to bring that infrastructure to those parts of the community.” Hawes said it’s too early to
determine how much money will be needed to make improvements. In order to establish what infrastructure is needed, council agreed on Tuesday to move forward with a proposal to create a parks and culture advisory committee. The committee will likely consist of eight or nine members of the community, once all of the details have been worked out. “We’re at the very beginning point,” said Maureen Sinclair, the district’s director of parks, recreation and culture. She expects to go to the community, seeking committee members, by the fall. Hawes is hopeful that a broad cross-section of citizens will get involved. “Let’s make life better for families, particularly for kids.” According to Hawes, council recognizes that if a city wants to have proper economic development, it has to offer the facilities families want, in order to convince them to relocate to the community. “If they don’t like it, they won’t come.” While the new committee will be able to make recommendations, council will still have final say on any changes.

A crowd of close to 50 people stood quietly in Hatzic Cemetery on Friday morning, remembering a fallen friend, comrade and troop mate. A half century after RCMP Cst. Kenneth Kornelson died, his fellow police officers finally had the chance to say goodbye. Kornelson, a recruit from Mission, was accidentally electrocuted while swimming in the pool at the RCMP Academy “Depot” in Regina on May 17, 1965. The ceremony, which recognized the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, was organized by Staff Sergeant Major John A. Buis, who said he was motivated to do something after hearing the story of Kornelson’s death and reading the written account. He said that after Kornelson’s death at the depot in Regina, his body was quickly taken back to Mission for a proper funeral. However, his troop mates could not attend. “All they had were the memories of him and a very short service in the chapel without Ken’s remains being there,” said Buis. “This (Friday’s ceremony) was a way for them to properly say goodbye and it was quite emotional for many of us.” Buis said that many of the troop mates had wanted this for a long time. Ten of them showed up for the service. “A lot of people don’t quite understand, but when you go through training, there are 32 in your troop and you become like a family. So they lost a member of their family,” he said. One of Kornelson’s troop mates, Jim Simpson, brought his two sons to the ceremony. Both are in the RCMP as well. Also attending the event was Mission Mayor Randy Hawes, Coun. Jim Hinds and representatives from the Mission RCMP, including Insp. Ted De Jager, who told those in

attendance that the memorial service will become an annual event. “He is a member of the (RCMP) family, so that was a commitment that I made at the memorial that we will remember him,” said De Jager. “Although it was a short service, his service was every bit as meaningful as anyone else’s.”
“It’s important to have that understanding of the sacrifices that our members throughout the years have made.” De Jager was impressed with the ceremony, especially the fact that members of Kornelson’s troop were in attendance. “They’ve been long since retired, so having them come out was amazing.” One issue that both De Jager and Buis would like to see resolved is despite the fact Kornelson was officially on duty, training in the pool when he passed away, his name has still not been added to the RCMP’s Honour Roll. Ten years ago, one of his troop mates, John Mitchell submitted documents to the RCMP to get the oversight corrected. Those were forwarded to the Canadian Police and Peace Officers Memorial, which is separate from the RCMP. “It was accepted and his name went up on the cenotaph just outside parliament,” said Buis. However, Kornelson’s name is still not on the RCMP memorial and that’s the next step that Buis wants to see happen. He plans to file new papers to get Kornelson officially recognized. The RCMP Honour Roll is located in Regina.

horsemanship, sportsmanship and dedication to the sport. Alves will now hold the award for one year, will retain a trophy and has received $1,000. When she learned she was chosen, from all the eligible riders in Canada, Alves said she couldn’t believe it.
MISSION RECORD
Natalie Alves has been fascinated with horses since her father placed her on one when she was just a baby. The Mission resident began riding before she could walk. At age six, she began to show horses. “My dad’s had horses for about 30 years so I was kind of born into it,” said the 17-year-old rider. Her love of riding has never diminished. “I was really into dance and school sports for a long time but at the end of the day, I quit everything to do this (horseback riding) more and more.” Her dedication recently paid off as Alves was the recipient of Equine Canada’s Gillian Wilson Junior Equestrian of the Year Award. The award is given annually to a junior equestrian athlete who has excelled in competitions for the current year while demonstrating exceptional talent,
“I was just shocked. I believe, from my knowledge, that I’m only the second-ever Arabian competitor to win the award.” In the past, Olympic riders have usually been honoured. Arabian riding runs in its own, non-Olympic circuit. Alves said a lot of

Is the grass greener?
Setting priorities is an important move for any municipal council and Mission has made it clear that recreation and parks will be a major focus. It’s been six months since this council was elected and in that time it has announced the Stave West master plan, ended the contract with the Mission Heritage Association to run Fraser River Heritage Park, and just this week, announced plans to create a parks advisory committee to look at improving infrastructure and amenities. Individually, each project could be interpreted as council managing the day-to-day needs of the district, but as a whole, it’s clear they are committed to making wholesale changes to Mission’s recreation scene. Mission Mayor Randy Hawes calls it improving livability, adding that improving parks and recreation will help attract new business and families to the area. He’s likely right. Certainly, the Stave West plan has
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
been needed for years. The area’s natural beauty and obvious potential for tourism dollars has been hampered by a lack of planning, an absence of facilities, and the difficulty of policing such a large, distant area. Stave West had become a destination for drunken partying, shooting and other activities that aren’t family-friendly. The new development plan can only help clean it up and attract visitors. Parks improvements is also an easy idea to get behind. Creating an advisory committee to examine needs and make suggestions makes sense. Who better to decide what facilities a park needs than the people who use it. The only question mark is the decision to end the contract for Fraser River Heritage Park. The Mission Heritage Association has run the park for 35 years. Only time will tell if the park grass is greener when under new management.

Sacrificing farmland for climate change Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views It was 2008 when word first surfaced that B.C. farmland was being bought up to grow trees as a European carbon offset. Reckitt Benckiser Inc., a British-based global manufacturer of household products such as Lysol spray and Calgon laundry soap, bought 1,500 hectares east of Vanderhoof and planted aspen. For comparison, that’s about the size of downtown Vancouver from 16th and Oak to Stanley Park. Since tree growing is permitted in the Agricultural Land Reserve, a use intended for fruit, ornamental or nursery trees, no permission was needed. And to meet the carbon offset rules of the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change, a 100-year restrictive covenant against harvesting trees was issued by B.C.’s land titles office. Goodbye farmland. After that deal, the B.C. government changed legislation in 2011 to require permission from the Agricultural Land Com-
mission to make these covenants valid. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick says he is waiting for that process to be tested. It likely will be soon. Reckitt has bought another 7,000 hectares of cleared farmland from Prince George down through the Cariboo to Quesnel. NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham has been tracking these acquisitions, and she says there are more deals in the works. Last fall, the Bulkley Nechako Regional District wrote to Victoria Wood, Reckitt Benckiser’s “global head of sustainability,” telling her that “the planting of trees on centrally located and productive agricultural lands is not appropriate” and would weaken local farm economies. Wood responded that the RB Trees project targets only “marginally productive” land such as pasture, abandoned farms or those that have been up for sale for long periods. Former Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson raised the issue in the legislature in 2008, noting that Crown land near Vanderhoof had been sold for farming, bought by a numbered company and then “flipped” for around $1 million to RB Trees. Now mayor of Quesnel, Simpson takes issue with the company’s claims with his usual shyness.
“It’s bull----,” he told me. “This isn’t marginal land.” He said it includes prime alfalfa fields and historical ranch and forage crop lands. In one case, neighbours found out about
Since aspen doesn’t last 100 years, what is its real carbon offset value? the new use when they saw a helicopter spraying herbicide to prepare the area for tree seedlings. In the Cariboo as in other rural B.C. areas, aging farmers want to retire and young people keen to work seven days a week are in short supply. So naturally there is pressure to sell. Perhaps Letnick is right, and the ALC will stop productive farmland from being turned back into forest. While we’re wait-
ing for that, here are a couple of other questions. What happens when these forests burn? The first big forest fire of 2015 grew out of control near Prince George last week. And since aspen doesn’t last 100 years, what is its real carbon offset value? How’s that European carbon trading market doing? It’s a mess, with the cost of emitting a tonne of carbon dioxide fallen far below what’s needed to be effective, and Interpol investigating various schemes to game the system. Remember B.C.’s own Pacific Carbon Trust? This Gordon Campbell brainchild to sell carbon offsets was quietly greenhouse gassed after the Auditor General revealed its first two big projects were of questionable value to say the least. Finally, does anyone really think that returning B.C.’s scarce farmland to forest is a good way to change the weather? Would it offset the loss of local production and trucking in farm produce from elsewhere? And where are B.C.’s tireless food security advocates on this dubious scheme? Volunteers help improve accessibility Zajac Ranch benefits from gift of time Hundreds of children and young adults with a range of medical conditions and disabilities who visit the Zajac Ranch for Children each year will benefit from improved accessibility, better-equipped outside communal spaces and spruced up landscaping, thanks to a volunteer team of 50 BCAA employees. The Zajac Ranch for Children, located in Mission, provides camps for children and young adults with chronic, life-threatening and/or debilitating conditions. These experiences give participants the opportunity to explore the outdoors while developing greater social and environmental awareness, increased self-confidence and positive growth in attitudes towards physical activity. BCAA employees rallied at a special volunteer day event on Tuesday (May 19) which provided the ranch with more than 250 hours of donated time, as well as building and landscape materials.
A day of caring Employees from Prospera Credit Union in Abbotsford and Mission were among those participating in the recent Day of Caring. The annual event involves employees contributing volunteer hours for United Way agencies in their communities. In total, almost 4,200 volunteer hours were contributed across B.C. for this year’s campaign in activities such as helping seniors with spring cleanup and gardening, sorting donations for the food bank, serving a meal and helping with renovation projects. Agencies assisted in Abbotsford were Cyrus Centre, the Abbotsford Food Bank and Abbotsford Community Services. In Mission, volunteers helped out at Hope Central and the Christine Morrison Hospice.
YOU and the LAW CAR CRASH? COMPENSATION FOR DEPRESSION
If you’ve been hurt in a car accident and it’s at least partly someone else’s fault, you’re probably entitled to get compensation from the other driver (who usually has some ICBC liability insurance coverage). The aim of such compensation is to put you in the same, but no better, position you would have been in if the accident hadn’t occurred. If you’re partly at fault, your compensation will be reduced accordingly.

Manny turned left in front of her at an intersection in Surrey, and the vehicles collided. Both vehicles were seriously damaged by the impact and had to be written off. Linda and Manny disagreed who was at fault. But relying on an independent witness and other objective sources, the court decided both Manny and Linda were equally to blame. Unfortunately, Linda’s injuries were long lasting and she still suffered at the trial four years later in 2014. Before the accident, Linda was an active outgoing person. She used to go camping, hiking, fishing and, in later years closer to the accident, “ghost hunting” with friends.
The court looked at the psychiatric evidence and concluded that Linda’s depression more than 20 years earlier was in remission and wasn’t a factor before the car accident. By the time of trial, however, she was diagnosed as having a major depressive disorder and a somatic symptom disorder, resulting in her experiencing chronic pain. The court attributed both of these conditions to the car crash with Manny. The court awarded Linda damages of $160,000 for her depression and chronic pain, plus over $155,000 for other things like loss of future earning ability and lost past wages. Because the car accident was half her fault, though, that amount was reduced by half.
Back in 1992, she had a workplace back injury that needed two back surgeries. Afterwards, she could no longer lift heavy things and it slowed down her activities. Around that time, she also suffered from depression due in part to her brother’s drowning death and her son’s schizophrenia diagnosis.

Riding for a cause Students’ efforts compel principal to take to the roof Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Leadership students at Mission Secondary School raised hundreds of dollars to get their principal peddling on the roof of the school and keep him there for at least six hours. Principal Jim Pearce began riding the stationary bike loaded with water and snacks on the lower part of the building’s roof at 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning. By close to 11 a.m., he had already travelled more than 70 km and he was expected to reach a couple of hundred kilometres before the day is done. “I love this stuff,” said Pearce, who enthusiastically supported the class’ project to raise funds for the Because I Am A Girl organization. The goal was to raise $100 to get Pearce to take on the challenge, and $15 every hour to keep him there until end of the school day. Donations were collected from students and staff

CAROL AUN PHOTO in the school. Throughout the year, leadership students in Grades 10 to 12, come up with ideas to raise funds for non-profit organizations, said teacher Mike Schneider. The class, made up of about 30 students, has already supported Greenpeace, Unicef,
Canadian Red Cross, and Cops for Cancer this year. As part of the class curriculum, students also educated the rest of the school population on their causes. Because I Am A Girl supports education and health initiatives for girls in developing countries.

Property Tax Notices Being Mailed Out – Pay & Claim Online 2015 Property Tax Notices will be mailed out to all Mission property owners by the end of May. Property tax payments and eligible Home Owner Grant applications are both due by Thursday, July 2, 2015. Home Owner Grants You can claim your home owner grant online as soon as you receive your tax notice. Remember, your application for this grant must be completed each year even if you are not making a payment. Visit mission.ca and click “Claim Your Home Owner Grant”. You will be asked for your roll number and password, located on the front of the tax notice. Don’t forget to print off or save the confirmation number for your records. Property Tax Payments Do you use online banking? Go to your financial institution’s online website and add District of Mission – Taxes as a payee with your roll number as the Payee account number. Pre-set the payment date Why not pre-set the payment date for your taxes? Setting a payment date of June 30, 2015 will eliminate the confusion over the timing of your payment. Payments can take up to three days to process, so we recommend you set the payment for June 30, 2015 at the latest. Remember to record your payment confirmation number. Can’t pay your taxes in full? You can pay as much or as little as you can afford, but remember, the outstanding amount after July 2, 2015 will receive a 10% penalty. The District accepts year round payments for those home owners who are trying to catch-up or are making pre-payments towards the next tax year. Setting up recurring payments through your online banking system makes this easy. Remember, to avoid the penalty, all payments and completed home owner grants must be received by the District by the July 2, 2015 due date.

YOU’RE “IT” Two of the most common children’s games are “Tag” and “Hide and Seek,” where the object is to avoid being tagged or even seen (in the case of Hide and Seek), by the person who is “it.” The person who is “it” is imagined to have some type of stigma attached to them, to the point where we can’t even let them touch or look at us. These sorts of games highlight the importance of our not wanting to be seen as different by others. No one wants to be “it,” and even children seem to feel this strong sense of wanting to be like everyone else. And although this fear of being different actually is a reflection of our wanting to follow the crowd, isn’t there something more special about being truly unique? We should celebrate our individuality and work passionately at becoming the unique person all of us are, instead of fearing that we will be thought of as eccentric, or a bit odd. We should learn to love and even pursue our individual eccentricities that God has given us, especially if they are part of our better self. And most of all, don’t be afraid of “it.” That’s right; you’re “it.” And you’re terrific! Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. -R.S.V. Hatzic music students shine at world festival
Band and choir students at Hatzic Secondary took home both gold and silver medals at the World Strides Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, Calif.
Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Band and choir students at Hatzic Secondary left a mark on the world music scene that will not soon be forgotten, even after the last Grade 12 graduating class walks out the school’s doors in June. The school is being turned into a middle school next year and the two music teachers that worked closely together for the past seven years will be going their separate ways. But this last year together is one to remember, said Joe Heslip, the school’s vocal music teacher. The Hatzic’s vocal jazz band called Affirmation won gold and the jazz band earned a silver at the World Strides Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, Calif., this past weekend. They were the only Canadian team there. “The band won a high silver. They were just one mark away from getting gold,” said Heslip, noting the band was led by Julie Aldridge. Grade 10 singer Mara Hatklin received a Maestro Award for best soloist and was ranked the number one vocalist of the festival. “She was fantastic,” said Heslip, adding there were hundreds of singers this year, but only 10 were selected for a Maestro Award by adjudicators at the festival. Hatklin’s solo was a part of Affirmation’s performance of 1,000 Things. Other numbers the group presented in a cappella were Michael Jackson’s Bad and Sting’s Fields of Gold. “There was no music accompanying them. They made all the drum sounds and base sounds,” said Heslip. “It was kind of hard, but they did a great job.” This was the choir’s third consecutive gold medal finish at the festival. The band performed Soul Vaccination, Cry Me a River, and Cheesecake. Students played their hearts out and Heslip said their performances were the best he’s ever heard.

plenty available to get this truck up to highway speed. I quite enjoyed the drive and although my day was filled with errands, I still managed to relax as a drove throughout the city, only to have my bubble burst as I ran into never ending construction. Verdict: I found the new F150 to be slight improvement over the previous version with most of the improvements coming from the interior. The new body design is more of a personal preference and I think it will take me a while longer to come around. Give it a year and I’ll let you know if it was a hit or a miss. The opulence and elegance of India’s long-standing automotive legacy has returned to India thanks to the vision and hard work of the event creator and

amongst Indian collectors. More owners are now taking an interest in maintaining and restoring their cars to the high standards required for such an international event. India has a very rich motoring heritage dating back to 1897, when a resident of Calcutta, imported the first car into India which was a De DionBouton. To summarize the event, it is unique and it is India’s closest comparison to the most famous event in the world the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It is a comparatively young event, which focuses on India’s automotive heritage, unlike Pebble Beach. Vehicles are not shipped to India from all over the world because only vehicles from within India can enter. It gives people a chance to see some magnificent cars from the esteemed stables of Indian royal patrons and noted private collectors. Visit the picture gallery at drivewaybc.ca

Suzy passed away peacefully on May 13, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Suzy was born in Langley, BC on April 12, 1952 and lived her whole life in the lower mainland. Tragically predeceased by son Jarrid in 2004, Suzy is survived and will be forever missed by daughter Brittany (Terry), husband Kevin, stepson Lee (Chelsea), grandchildren Benjamin, Lukas and Tucker, mother Joan, sister Connie, brother Gordie (Kim) and many other friends and family too numerous to mention. Suzy was a long time employee of London Drugs and was eternally grateful for the network of friends she had through her work family. She was an avid hiker, loved to dragonboat (and that network of friends), working in her garden and yard at Birch Bay, loved animals and was a regular supporter of the SPCA. Suzy had a smile that could light up a room and embraced life every day, no matter what challenges she faced. Suzy firmly believed her family and friends came first and she was the first one to provide comfort in times of need and to help celebrate their successes. Suzy’s passing leaves a hole that can never be filled but memories of her kindness, her joy of life and love and commitment to friends and family will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers donations to the Mission Hospice would be gratefully appreciated. A Celebration of Suzy’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015, in Abbotsford, time and location still to be determined. Tributes and condolences may be left at www.hendersonsabbotsfordfunerals.com
