A person suffering a drug overdose at the Cliff Avenue homeless camp Wednesday survived thanks to the help of a good samaritan prepared for such an emergency. Ambulance and firefighters responded to a call about the overdose at about 1:45 p.m. The person was found lying on the street just outside one of the tents, at the east end of the camp, which is behind the Salvation Army on Lougheed Highway. “One of the homeless people there had a Narcan kit,” said Dan Herbranson, civilian spokesman for the Ridge Meadows RCMP. “Certainly, the administration of this boost of Narcan [naloxone] went a long way to saving this person.” He didn’t have a name or age of the victim. The atmosphere was tense at the camp as temperatures climbed, while fire, police and ambulance attended and a life hung in the balance. Herbranson said he didn’t know what drug was ingested and pointed out the person needed medical care after the naloxone injection. See Overdose, 3

His daughter, 15-year-old Katelynn Kirkland, was a passenger in a Volkswagen that was in collision with a Toyota pickup truck and didn’t survive. Now Struchtrup wants to at least improve the odds for future drivers. He and his sister, Nicole Grant, have also started the Petition for Katie’s Corner on change.org to be directed to the city to ask it to change the intersection and make it safer. Removing barriers to get people off the street and into homes is the priority of an action plan presented by the city’s homelessness solutions task force on Tuesday. The plan identified a lack of low barrier housing in Maple Ridge and requested a staff report on the possibility of bringing in container housing. Mayor Nicole Read gave council an update on the task force’s progress, prior to its formal release next Thursday, May 28. “We need to get something on the ground relatively quickly,” Read said during a livestreamed, half-hour slide presentation. “We have quite an emergent situation.” A homeless camp has formed on Cliff Avenue in recent weeks, behind the Salvation Army shelter. One solution to the homelessness problem, according to the task force, could be bringing in shipping containers converted into 250-sq. foot living units. “We’ve got some significant gaps in housing in this community,” Read said.
There are no low-barrier shelters here where people can get a roof over their heads no matter what their problems. And the new federal government’s Housing First program is more difficult for smaller cities to access, she added. Read said the biggest challenge is affordability. Currently, single employable people only get $375 a month for shelter allowance, taken out of their $610 monthly income assistance. Meanwhile, the average cost of rental housing per year in Maple Ridge is $13,000. “You can see there’s a significant gap there,” Read said. “What we’ve heard over and over again from our citizens who are currently unsheltered is that, ultimately, they need a place of their own.” Sharing premises can lead people back to the drug world or eviction, she explained. Read said the task force has talked to B.C. Housing about possible housing types. “Ultimately, this kind of housing is something council really needs to have a conversation about.” Read said the city wants to get homeless campers off Cliff Avenue, but doesn’t have a solution for that yet. If the task force’s strategy didn’t succeed in a few months, Coun. Gordy Robson, who, along with Coun. Bob
Masse, is on the task force, wants to try a new approach. “If this model doesn’t work quickly, we’re going to change it to a more direct and actionable way,” Robson said. “I’m hoping we’re going to see a difference in weeks and if we don’t, we’re going to have make a change.” Read said the problem wasn’t solely the city’s and wants local MLAs and MPs involved, particularly with a federal election approaching in November. A shift by the federal Conservative government to the Housing First program resulted in the closure this year of the emergency shelter beds at Iron Horse Youth Safe House and the loss of 1.5 outreach worker positions. “They’re not going to get away with all attention focused on the city. The question is, where are the funding providers,” Read asked. “We need a national housing strategy in this country, there’s no question.” Several questions from Cliff Avenue residents followed Read’s presentation. “Get them off Cliff Avenue,” said one. “We do know we need to move the camp off Cliff Avenue, so that’s something we’re working towards,” Read said at the end of the slide presentation. Starting a permanent homeless
camp on city property raises other issues, Read added, and that subsidized housing is a big incentive for someone living in a tent. People living in that housing would be paying part of their income to do so. Another person asked what happens if people refuse drug addiction treatment. Read agreed that drug addiction is a “demon” and suggested a one-for-one needle exchange, collecting used ones when new syringes are issued. She also said homeless people can’t be blamed for local crime. “I want to be very clear, that is not the case.” Crime waves happen when criminals sweep through an area, she added. However, part of the homeless solutions strategy included initiatives such as RCMP electronically tracking goods sold in pawn shops and metal yards, as well as the city knocking down derelict buildings. Read said, as part of the presentation, that those living in the homeless camp on Cliff Avenue have requested they be referred to from now on as “street citizens.” A woman who lives in the Cliff Avenue camp said people there don’t want to bother anybody. “We are people too and sometimes we need help. We don’t want to be there.”
Fraser Health gives out free Take Home Naloxone kits to people to combat deadly fentanyl overdoses. Fentanyl, a pain-killing drug, is 100 times more powerful than heroine. Dr. Liz Zubek, who has a clinic near the Cliff Avenue camp, said the person who administered the antidote has been trained to do so and carries around a kit in case such incidents occur. She wasn’t sure if he was actually a resident of the camp. “He’s one of the street people who is responsible and who looks out for others.” Zubek said there is drug use at the camp, but it’s minimal and most residents don’t support that. “You can’t stop drug use completely.” She said camp residents were upset that someone in one of the buildings on Cliff Avenue was laughing during the emergency. The Take Home Naloxone kit includes two syringes, two doses of naloxone, rubber gloves and a breathing tube. The idea is to give them to friends or family of users so they’re handy if a drug user overdoses. Clients watch a video on how to administer the antidote before receiving the kits. If someone is overdosing, the naloxone can be injected into the major muscles right through clothing if necessary. Alouette Addictions Society in downtown Maple Ridge has given out several such kits.

atzie First Nation band members now have a place of their own where they can keep active and healthy, have large gatherings or community events and just be together. The $4.5-million Katzie First Nation Health and Community Centre opened Wednesday on the band’s reserve in Pitt Meadows. “Everybody was blown away by the quality of the building, the size of the building,� said Katzie Chief Susan Miller. She enjoyed listening to people’s comments as they entered the building for the opening ceremonies. The building, just east of the band office, features a full-size gym, kitchen, a board room, office space for visiting professionals, an elder’s lounge and a health centre. Long-range plans are to become certified by Fraser Health so the health centre can serve the larger community. For now, though, Katzie residents will no longer have to find other places in Pitt Meadows for meetings. The band also wants to develop a business case for possible rental of the building for weddings. It could also be used as a centre for regional aboriginal associations. “It’s been a long time coming,� said band resident Eileen Kenworthy. “We’ve been waiting 20-plus years.� The building, which has a capacity of 450, is decorated in muted
earth tones inside with brighter colours outside. It’s focused on health and youth and means kids don’t have to leave the reserve to get involved with activities, Kenworthy said. “We can have it here. Our community gatherings we can now have here. So it’s beautiful. It’s something I think, they went beyond our expectations,� Kenworthy added. Half of the money for the project came from Health Canada and the
other half from Katzie First Nation Resources. The Katzie council looked at what other bands have done. “We wanted it to be a well-lit, uplifting place. We didn’t want it to look like an institution,� said Band Coun. Peter James. “We always wish we had more because our community is growing so rapidly.� Current population on the reserve is about 350, while there are 550 registered band members. The building will be a
place for the kids to go away from the street, he added. Elder Cyril Pierre wants people to learn to respect and honour the building. It’s something they’ve never had before, he added. “It will change our future, for our young people especially.� He added that such a beautiful place can change lives. “A lot of learning and teaching has to come now from this [for the] future to change.�

A good start Maple Ridge council introduced part of its homelessness solutions strategy this week and it identified a need for low-barrier housing. Mayor Nicole Read also acknowledged that the city needs to move the campers off Cliff Avenue, next to the Salvation Army shelter, but does not have a plan for that, yet. Regardless, at least the city, through this new committee, is taking action. The committee and its many sub-groups have identified the multiple barriers that prevent homeless people from getting off the street – from addiction and mental health issues, as well as affordable forms of housing, people and funding to bridge the gaps. Similarly, a pilot project in Ottawa, Waterloo and Hamilton mirrors what the Maple Ridge task force is attempting. The 20,000 Homes campaign is being led by the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness. Volunteers there talk to those who are living on the street, put names to faces, get to know them, their story, to identify their own personal problems and barriers, and try to help them find homes. Volunteers and social services staff work together, surveying the homeless, learning everything from medical histories to education levels. Individuals are then rated who is in most need – the most vulnerable – of housing assistance. Much was known about those staying in shelters, but less so about the “hidden” homeless – those camping or living in cars, or moving around from place to place. The campaign identified how resourceful homeless people are – figuring out where to get food and a safe place to sleep, but not how to break the pattern. The campaign aims to help them do that. We can only hope for the same in Maple Ridge. The campaign here, much like the one in Ottawa, will follow the federal lead of housing first. Once people have shelter, other supports can be put in place, even rent supplements, or donations of furniture and clothing. It’s about making people feel a part of the community. Freshwater of Pitt Lake beckons S ince retirement, we have traveled extensively throughout parts of North America – from tropical paradises in the Caribbean and Mexico to the wilderness of Alaska and the north country, and from the Sonoran Desert and Grand Canyon in Sidewinder Arizona to the wild and Sandy Macdougall wet, fog-shrouded rain coast forests on Vancouver Island. We have witnessed beauty and marvels of nature which defy description. And, yet, the most beautiful, awe inspiring miracle of nature lies right in our backyard. I am referring to the grandeur and spectacle of Pitt Lake. It was created more than 10,000 years ago, when the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age gouged out the deep trough that forms the lake bed. The lake is now a body of fresh water, but it is still subject to ocean tides, one of the only freshwater lakes in the world where that can be encountered. We have enjoyed the lake at its best, when the gentle waters beckon and entice you. But the lake can be a wild, destructive beast when winter winds howl and whip the waters into a frenzy, with three to four foot waves ready to wreak destruction on unwary boaters. Pitt Lake is surrounded by towering,

sometimes snow-capped mountains, such as the twin peaks of the Golden Ears, which rise majestically from the eastern shore of the lake. Enshrined in legends of the Coast Salish people who lived, traveled and hunted in the area, the Golden Ears can reflect many different moods and images depending on the season and the weather. Some of the images are so vivid you will remember them forever without the aid of photographs. Of all the great sunrises we have seen in the southwest deserts or aboard a tall ship in the Caribbean, nothing can compare with the almost mystical scene of the sun rising over the Golden Ears and spreading its warming rays westward across the chilly waters of the lake. Prior to its evolution as a fresh water body, Pitt Lake was an ocean fjord. Its shores encompass almost every British Columbian tree species known on the West Coast. From that heritage, we are left with the marvelous site of Arbutus trees in various locations along the lake’s shoreline. Arbutus trees with their highly visible peeling red bark normally grow only along rocky coastlines. There is no other known location of these spectacular trees growing this far from the ocean. Climbing the eastern slopes of Pitt Lake will lead you to sites where you can discover seashells, another reminder of the lake’s ancient history. There is also the mystery of Slumach’s lost

gold mine, which, according to legend, is supposed to be located somewhere in the general area northeast of Pitt Lake. Slumach was a Coast Salish native who had reportedly discovered gold in the area east of the lake. He was later convicted of murder and hanged without ever divulging the location of his secret gold mine. The steeply sloped and heavily forested shores of Pitt Lake are home to black bears, deer, wolves, cougars, coyotes and many other species of wildlife which can be easily spotted by a patient observer. Eagles, owls, and several other raptors also frequent the area along with water fowl of every type. And in the cold, deep waters of the lake, fish make their way to spawning grounds in the tributary streams to the Upper Pitt River. One of my favourite things to do is to travel to the head of the lake by boat and then cut the engine and simply drift along with the wind and tide and admire the awesome tableau unfolding before my eyes and breathe in air so fresh it almost has a scent of its own. With water gently lapping at the hull of the boat we can relax and enjoy the scenery. Undoubtedly, in the years ahead, we will continue to travel and marvel at the bounties and beauty of other places, but Pitt Lake will always be one of the most beautiful and interesting places we have been privileged to enjoy. Human nature to seek bias
Editor, The News: Re: Cliff campers digging in (The News, May 13). The question always comes up, with the only solution being to build homes. That is a simplistic solution. The real question: is permitting this camp helping or enabling? Abbotsford put up portable toilets and I am not sure when the city plans to bring in power. Is this the direction of Maple Ridge, or maybe the business next door should help by setting up a hot tub for use of those on the street. Phil Melnychuk wrote to identify three reasons for homelessness: those who lost a job; a mental health issue; or addiction issues. Those who lost jobs can always get a place to stay with the B.C. welfare system, which spends two and half billion dollars a year on social services. This group can get help if desired. Why is it thousands of immigrants come here with not a penny and I have never seen a homeless immigrant? Those with mental health and addiction issues cannot solve them by being given a ‘home’ or enabling them to have a comfortable convenient space in that neighborhood. You can see how quickly this location is expanding as word gets out a no hassle place is available. Enabling does not help. They need help with their issues. They do not need the city enabling the comfort of living in tents. Choices of help are not looked at favourably. A drug addict needs a reason to get off drugs, not support by enabling living on street. Dan Banov Maple Ridge
Editor, The News: Re: Basing everything on fallacy (Open mic, May 15). How is it that you so clearly see the sliver in your brother’s eye, but not the log in your own? Mike Shields says, “We all reach conclusions based on logic.” If that were true, wouldn’t there be more agreement on issues? A better view to take is that humans reach conclusions that are based on preexisting bias. Our prior world view influences our take on most issues and we seek out and support that which confirms our bias and avoid, ignore and disparage that which counters it. It’s human nature. I am in agreement with him that too many arguments these days are based on logical fallacies. So imagine my disappointment when I find that he engages in logical fallacies himself, in the article.
He uses a ‘strawman’ fallacy’ (conclusion is misrepresented) to imply that skeptics of Al Gore’s CO2 induced catastrophic global warming thesis use ad hominem to deride him because they lack contrary scientific data. But there is data* and there are many scientists who legitimately and scientifically dispute Gore’s claims of an imminent CO2 induced climate disaster. He uses an ‘ad hominem’ himself when he asserts that it is “ridiculous” to question the veracity of research that is paid for with multi millions of dollars of government grants, when it is obvious to all, that if you don’t step out of line and stay near Gore’s thesis, your funding will continue well into the future. No, money couldn’t be corrupting their work. But the skeptics presumably have (strawman and ad hominem) “carbon-industry-funding” (Big Oil?), so
their position is therefore totally suspect. How nice it must be to see so clearly what motivates those who you agree with and those who you don’t, and be able to differentiate the two. Are you sure that’s not your personal bias showing through? Then he uses that old and so tired “97 per cent of scientists” meme that has been debunked so many times in the past. This is an obvious ‘appeal to authority’ fallacy that the climate alarmists just refuse let go of. His slippery slope fallacy example is not very convincing, either. Not long ago, same sex marriage was illegal. Now your called a bigot if you don’t support it. I do not agree that it is “mocking reasonable debate” to suggest that polygamists see the gains made by gays and think that they might use the same sort of arguments to overcome bigotry and gain popular
acceptance and legal marital status for themselves. I see no logic to prevent it; gay or poly, who cares any more? He is correct to acknowledge that same sex marriage has compromised actuarial expectations of pension and life insurance payouts. As usual, follow the money to understand behaviour. Logical fallacies are an impediment to proper discussion of issues. They are used by people of all political stripes to score cheap points on many issues in the press, the blogosphere and on TV news. As consumers of media, we must call it out and expose it, even when it is used in support of our most cherished beliefs. The sound caused by noisy expansion joints on Golden Ears Bridge continues to plague one Pitt Meadows resident. According to Derek Thorkelson, a professor of earth sciences at Simon Fraser University and Wildwood Crescent home owner, the joints currently in place are not buffering the noise adequately. He said area residents are still annoyed, but have given up trying to argue about the voice because they believe nothing will get done. “Residents are upset with TransLink and looking to Pitt Meadows for a solution,” Thorkelson said at a regular council meeting Tuesday. He added that one of his neighbors described the issue as “like having a barking dog next door, except that it never stops.” In 2011, two years after the bridge opened, TransLink implemented a sound-deading solution that had been used in China and involved placing cloth-like material in between the bars that make up the expansion joints on the bridge. After that cloth was in place, neoprene strips, glued into place, were used to the fill the gaps between the main span and approach ramps. TransLink could not confirm the cost of the option, but indicated it was cheaper than covering the joints with plates and building ramps on the deck to get cars on to those plates. A TransLink spokesman at that time also said the solution was expected to cut the noise level by approximately seven decibels. Thorkelson reported he had pages of data proving the sound-relief solution provided some reprieve, but not enough, in part because the neoprene strips are starting to degrade. He showed council pictures of the degradation and suggested maintenance was not being properly monitored. “The policy for main-

the noise emitted by expansion joints was continual. Council voted in favor of inviting TransLink to come to a council meeting to further discuss the possibility of implementing better bridge maintenance, as well as other noise buffering solutions.

“It was a very special gift to be able to help other families in our time of loss. It’s huge, right? “I try to envision, maybe it was a girl Katelynn’s age [for whom] we helped save a life.” Struchtrup’s efforts to increase safety at the corner of Callaghan and the Haney Bypass are being aided by Port Haney resident Ian McLeod, who, after the accident, wrote a letter to MLA Doug Bing, asking his support in making safety improvements to the bypass. It wasn’t the first time McLeod had lobbied for something to be done. “I was reminded of the letter I wrote to you in February 2014 about the frequent crack-ups and near-misses at this corner. Our elderly neighbour had just walked away from a pile-up that he was lucky to survive,” McLeod told Bing. McLeod said the 600-metre curb lane ends abruptly at the concrete island at Callaghan Avenue. That can cause inattentive drivers to swerve into the centre lane suddenly. “This randomizing of driver behaviour puts all traffic directions at risk.” McLeod again referred to his 2014 note in which he said overhead and pavement signage was needed to signal that the curb lane is not a through lane. “A couple of small rightlane-must-exit signs were tacked up. They may have helped slightly, but it’s not enough.” He says the right lane can be blocked farther up the hill, or the ministry can buy land and extend the right lane to beyond Callaghan. It could also install traffic lights or build a roundabout at the intersection. Bing replied that this March, he and MLA Marc Dalton, Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and municipal engineer David Pollock met with Transportation Minister Todd Stone to discuss how to improve safety on the Lougheed Highway. However, the letter would be relevant to the discussions, Bing added. According to ICBC’s traffic statistics page, the intersection has a low number of accidents. Between 2009 and 2013, there have been only 15 accidents of all types there. The other end of the bypass, by Kanaka Way, has had 396 accidents in that time.

The B.C. family doctor shortage continuing to plague the province may become a distant memory for residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice executive director Treena Innes says local staff who run the program A GP For Me are optimistic their strategies for dealing with the issue will continue to have an impact on the provincial shortage, which has been called critical. Their program research showed there were 17,000 people in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who did not have a family physician. In its second year, RMDFP, which represents 87 family physicians in the community, has been successful in attracting several practitioners in the past
year. Three have been recruited since August 2014. Two more doctors from the U.K. agreed to move to Pitt Meadows and will arrive in July. And another doctor is due to arrive in Maple Ridge in September. Each of them will have the typical roster of patients ranging from 1,500 to 2,000. “We are definitely seeing some great progress,” says Innes. A GP For Me is a $132-million, twoyear-old provincial initiative developed by B.C. doctors and the Ministry of Health. The program’s goal is to have everyone in the province who wants a family physician to have access to one. To date, the Ministry of Health reports it has matched 54,600 patients to primary care providers. Although Innes describes the recruitment
component of the program as “highly successful,” she indicates there is still much work to be done. Her organization’s research also showed more than onethird of family doctors located locally will be retiring over the next 10 years. It is also expected the area’s population will grow by 19 per cent in that same time. “We’ve got to keep moving forward with all of this.” Retired family doctor and RMDFP board member Dr. Al Neufeld echoes Innes’ sentiments and adds a recent statistic shows 350 doctors in B.C. retire annually, “but only 280 students from B.C.’s medical schools are graduating.” He said further that less than half of those graduates actually go into family practice. In addition to recruiting new family doctors,
RMDFP has developed a number of doctor-retention initiatives that include the launch of a medical pilot program called GP Extender, which involves administrative staff being trained to take over the administrative duties family doctors tackle on a daily basis. A nurse practitioner who works out of the Salvation Army care facility and sees low or no-income individuals for everything from foot and wound care to nurse practitioner training is another example of RMDFP initiatives started in the last year. According to recent reports, a backlog of 176,000 British Columbians looking for a family physician in 2010 has grown to more than 200,000. Funding for the provincial A GP For Me program ends March 2016, when it will be reviewed.

Why non-GMO seeds matter, to me By Mike Lascelle
I
noticed that when this year’s seed racks were delivered, most, if not all of them had banners declaring them free of genetically modified seeds – the reason being that consumers want nothing to do with such products. Then the new pineapple-flavoured ‘Aloha’ strawberry arrived and almost every single potential buyer took the time to ask me if they were genetically modified – which they are not, as it is just a hybrid. This level of concern surprised me, but I was still happy to see people making informed choices. That said, I think it might be a good idea to review what constitutes a hybrid, cultivar, variety or clone – or other terms sometimes mistaken for genetically modified. A hybrid is generally a cross of two compatible species. This can occur in cultivation or naturally. Cultivars are usually vegetatively-reproduced natural mutations that are discovered in gardens or in the wild. Natural varieties or subspecies are found in the wild and survive without any human intervention; these just have traits (flower colour, leaf shape) that differ from the species. Clones or tissue-cultured plants are simply reproduced by using their own genetic material, so there is no actual tinkering with the natural DNA. This brings us to genetically modified plants, which do have the DNA altered and are not found in the wild, except as escapees. These have not gone through the filter of millions of years of biological evolution, so we have no idea how they will ultimately impact the environment. They are generally modified to resist insect pests and herbicides and include corn (93 per cent of U.S. crop), cotton (96 per cent of U.S. crop), soybean (94 per cent of U.S. crop), canola, sugar beets, rice, potatoes, squash and the ‘Arctic’ apple. Personally, I think you should just say no to GMOs, but if you are interested in knowing more: • Once released, GMO plants cannot be controlled – escaped GM canola plants (Brassica napus var oleifera) have been detected from Japan to Canada, but in North Dakota two such

escapees were found to be herbicide resistant, even after naturalizing. Such plants would be capable of cross-pollinating with compatible noxious weeds such as field mustard (Brassica napa) and creating an herbicide-resistant offspring. (1) • GM crops are responsible for herbicide resistance – weeds will eventually develop a resistance when only one herbicide (glyphosate) is applied to Roundup-ready GM crops, which has already resulted in 21 resistant weed species. This has forced some farmers to resort to secondary herbicides or, additional sprays, which some have been estimated to be equal to 25 per cent increases per year. (2) • They often harm more than the target pest –

genetically modified Bt corn pollen has been shown to kill 44 per cent of Monarch butterfly larvae in controlled experiments (and in the wild), with the remaining larvae being about half the size of those not exposed to the Bt pollen. This is a serious problem because much of the Monarch’s natural habitat is adjacent to the corn crops in America’s heartland. (3) • Genetically modified material is being absorbed by the human body – Bt toxins (linked to GM corn) were found in the blood of pregnant women, their babies and also non-pregnant women in the eastern townships of Quebec. In 2003, 90 residents of a Filipino village became seriously ill when the newly planted GM corn started bearing pollen – all lived within 100

metres of the field and Bt contamination was found in the blood of 30 individuals. Register for Bike to Work Week ICBC is urging drivers to watch out for cyclists during Bike to Work Week next week, May 25 to 31. In B.C., 670 cyclists are injured and six are killed in car crashes from June to September every year. That’s five cyclists injured every day in the summer. Distracted driving and failing to yield the right-of-way are the top contributing factors for drivers involved in crashes with cyclists in B.C., says ICBC. Last spring, 7,500 people – more than 20 per cent of whom were new to bike commuting – registered online for Metro Vancouver’s Bike to Work Week, according to HUB Cycling, the Metro Vancouver cycling advocacy group. Thousands more participated in the public events. Celebration stations along major bike routes and at transit stations provided free
coffee, snacks, cycling maps and bike repairs to the public, with registrants eligible for individual and team prizes. This year, HUB expects to draw bike commuters to the event, thanks in part to increased participation from the business community. “Increasingly, businesses are recognizing the benefits of promoting Bike to Work Week to their staff,” said Laura Jane, HUB’s Bike to Work program manager “Employees who bike to work are shown to be healthier and more productive. Plus the friendly competition for team prizes and bragging rights makes Bike to Work Week a great team-building activity.” ICBC’s tips for drivers: • Actively watch for cyclists on the road. Make eye contact with cyclists whenever pos-
sible to let them know you have seen them. • Shoulder check for cyclists before turning right and watch for oncoming cyclists before turning left. • Before you or a passenger opens a vehicle door, shoulder check for cyclists coming from behind. Before you pull away from the curb, make sure you shoulder check for cyclists. • If you need to cross a bike lane to turn right or to pull to the side of the road, signal well in advance and yield to cyclists. • If you’re entering the roadway from a laneway or parking lot, always scan for cyclists and other road users. Tips for cyclists: • Plan your route before you go, give yourself plenty of time and choose bike lanes and paths where possible. If you’re new to cycling, pick routes with less traffic. Google Maps can
help you plan your cycling route and municipalities often have great maps of bike routes on their websites. • Be aware of what’s going on around you at all times and scan ahead for hazards like potholes, gravel, glass and drainage grates. Watch for vehicles entering the roadway from laneways and parking lots. • When turning, shoulder check well in advance, hand signal and then, with both hands on the handle bars, shoulder check again before turning. • Ride at least a metre from parked vehicles to avoid being hit by an opening door or a vehicle pulling into your lane from the curb. Use caution if you notice someone in the vehicle. • When riding at dusk, dawn or at night, your bike must be equipped with a white headlight visible at 150 metres and a rear red light and reflector visible at 100 metres. Consider adding more lights to be even more visible. Registration for this month’s Bike to Work Week is free, and lets riders create teams and map routes, as well as win prizes.

espite the loss of one of the country’s top players, this year’s edition of the Maple Ridge Burrards is expected to again contend for the WLA crown. The Burrards will take their first steps on the road to the WLA title and a trip east for this year’s Mann Cup when they host the Burnaby Lakers on Sunday, 6:45 p.m. at Planet Ice – a team they defeated in six games in the opening round of the playoffs last year. The 2015 pre-season rankings have the Burrards sitting at No. 4 in the nation, two spots behind last year’s WLA champions, the Victoria Shamrocks. The Burrards lost the WLA final to their Island counterparts in a tough five-game series. Burrards head coach Chris Gill said he’s excited to get the season started and build off the team’s success last year. In order to do that, he said the Burrards will have to continue with their strong defensive play. “I’ve said it before, offense doesn’t win you championships. Defence does,” said the secondyear bench boss. Gill said one of the first things he did when he

The Burrards will again rely heavily on goalie Frankie Scigliano, who had a league-leading 6.65 GAA and the top save percentage, at .838. The team also ranked second in penalty killing last year at 68 per cent, second only to the Salmonbellies, at 73 per cent. Scigliano has had a solid season in the pro ranks with the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League, something Gill said should boost his confidence when he suits up for the Burrards. The Roughnecks are down 1-0 to the Edmonton Rush in the best of three Western Conference final. Game 2 goes Saturday, May 23 in Calgary. If the Roughnecks win, a 10-minute Game 3 tiebreaker will follow immediately after. While defence is the Burrards’ strong point, they still have to put the ball in the net. Gill said losing a player of Dickson’s scoring ability leaves a hole, but said he’s confident his team can win despite the loss of their top offensive star. “Losing a guy of that calibre is huge, but you’ve got to roll with the punches. We’re not going to lay down, that’s for sure. The guys that we have coming in are solid players and will give us a ton of depth that we didn’t have last year.” See Burrards, 27

Royals win midget AAA tourney The Ridge Meadows Royals went undefeated on the Victoria Day long weekend to win the inaugural Aldergrove midget AAA baseball tournament. The Royals won the tournament, topping the host Aldergrove Dodgers 9-6 in a wild game that featured a number of lead changes. The Royals jumped out to a 5-1 lead early, only to watch the Dodgers claw back to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning.
However, as the trend had been all weekend, the Royal’s bats continued to pound the opposition, battling back to earn a 9-6 win and take the inaugural tournament title. Chris Bailey started on the hill for the Royals in the final and gave way to Trevor Reed, who came in to pick up the save. Seth Injates was named the tournament MVP. As a team, the Royals batted .396 and allowed just 12 runs in six games. The Royals opened the tournament on Thursday against the Coquitlam A’s. The Royals scorched the A’s pitching for 19 runs in a five-inning shutout. Santiago Torres led the Royals, going 3-4 at the plate, including a tworun triple. Nick Baust had a double and a triple to lead the way offensively. “Overall, it was a great weekend for the bantam Royals,” said Nor Ljunggren, general manager of the bantam AA Royals. “They played inspired baseball and showed more determination and consistency than they have all season. Missed by her son Clifford (Barbara) Lohnes, her grandchildren Michael (Shannen) and Tracey (Rick) Lohnes and her 3 great grandchildren Paige, Raine and Tatum Lohnes. Rose was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and she will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends. The funeral was held on Thursday, May 21st at 1:00 at Garden Hill Funeral Chapel 11765-224th St. Maple Ridge. She was buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery beside her husband Victor. MORIGEAU, Verline Virginia “Dear God: If I give all my love away, can I have a refill?” MAKINSON, Barbara May 22, 1926 - May 11, 2015 Barbara was born in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan.She was raised on a small farm and then went to the University of Saskatoon where she earned her teaching degree. Shortly after, she moved to BC and took a teaching position in Maple Ridge. She met Dave Makinson, a mink rancher, at a badminton game. They fell in love and married soon after. Barb and Dave raised four happy and energetic children on the mink ranch. The household was busy and always welcoming. If unexpected guests appeared, Barb would simply add a little water to the soup pot and make them feel welcome. Barb was always engaged and active in her community volunteering, golfing with friends and hosting bridge games. She never lost her love of learning and took every opportunity to explore new topics. She took classes at SFU, read voraciously and especially, loved to travel. For many years Yvette Arcand was both a dear friend and adventurous traveling companion. Barb’s family was always of prime importance and she expressed this in many ways. Each grandchild received many handsewn and knit garments from her and could always expect to find a special treat in her kitchen. We all shared trips together thanks to her generosity, and because of these trips, have formed treasured bonds and memories together. Barb will be remembered fondly for her laughter, her unfailing kindness, and her generosity. She was predeceased by her husband Dave in 1971. She is missed by her children Tom (Debby), Gen (Paul), Zoe (Ken) and Jim (Kay); grandchildren Baird and Cole, Morgan, Dana and Nathan, Jordan, Sarah and Gary; and great grandchildren Owen, Leah, Leif (plus one more in progress).
