City proposes schedule for street work TRE VOR CR AWLEY
The City of Cranbrook has released a tentative schedule for road-paving projects this summer but, as always, plans are subject to change. “Really, a lot of this is going to depend on weather, subcontractor availability, equipment availability and the workforce, so a lot that will hinge on that and when the milling machine can make it into town,” said Chris Zettel, the corporate communications officer for the City of Cranbrook.

RCMP focus on traffic issues near high school RCMP
On Wednesday and Thursday, May 20 and 21, Cranbrook RCMP members focused on an on-going issue with motorists near and around the intersection of 14th Ave Street and Baker Street. Mount Baker Secondary School has been experiencing issues with motorists speeding through their school zone. During this two-day operation, RCMP members focused on providing a visible presence during peak traffic times. On Wednesday, May 20, several written warnings for various Motor Vehicle Act/Regulation infractions were delivered to motorists. On Thursday May 21, more written warnings were issued along with violation tickets for traffic offenses within the school zone. Cranbrook RCMP believes that with increased presence and the addition of the speed radar sign (located at 14th Avenue North and 2nd Street North), motorists will concentrate on adhering to the posted school zone signage. “Cranbrook RCMP are committed to the safety of students which can be accomplished by reminding motorists to exercise caution when driving in school zones,” said Cst. Elisha Belonio.

STEWART WILSON PHOTOS
The drawdown at Idlewild Lake in Cranbrook continues in its gradual way. It was noted last weekend by the photographer that the water level is down nine inches to a foot. The photographer — Stewart Wilson — also saw more western painted turtles than usual along a wider area than they’ve been seen before — perhaps due to there being more perches for them to sun themselves, such as roots and low branches, given the drop in water level. Waterfowl were also evident, with Canada geese, Mallards and ducklings, even a spotted sandpiper and a kingfisher. The water levels are being lowered at Idlewild Lake based on recent assessments of the dam at the lake’s western end and concern for public safety. Cranbrook City Council is looking for funding to replace the dam and restore the lake. The City is also looking for public input on Idlewild Park, and is offering a short online survey, at fluidsurveys.com/s/Idlewildpark/. The survey ends May 25.

Voluntary ORV registration moved ahead to Nov. 1, 2015 For the Townsman
VICTORIA - Mandatory off-road vehicle registration is being deferred from June 1 to Nov. 1, 2015. A press release from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations says the extra time provides additional time for off-road users to prepare for the mandatory registration, while the regulatory details are finalized on both registration and safety. Full details are anticipated to be announced by early fall, with implementation for both mandatory registration and safety provisions to begin Nov. 1, 2015. In the interim, voluntary one-time registration for operating an ORV on Crown land will continue with the combined cost of the registration certificate and ORV number plate remaining at $48. This registration is integrated within the pre-existing structure of ICBC’s motor vehicle registry, reducing implementation costs and allowing ORV owners to register at any of the 900+ ICBC insurance brokers in the province. An estimated 200,000 off-road vehicles are used in the province. To date, approximately 20,000 ORVs have registered under the Off-Road Vehicle Act. Snowmobiles have been registered in British Columbia since the 1970s.
Butler shortlisted for writing award Darryl Schmidt
Former College of the Rockies student Dave Butler will soon be travelling to Toronto for a very exciting event. He will be attending the Arthur Ellis Gala at the Arts and Letters Club to find out if his first novel, Full Curl, is the winner of a prestigious Crime Writers of Canada award. The Crime Writers of Canada is a national professional organization for mystery and crime writers. They have sponsored the Arthur Ellis Awards for Crime and Mystery Writing since 1984. Butler has been shortlisted for the ‘Unhanged Arthur for First Unpublished Crime Novel’. Butler is looking forward to the opportunities his attendance at
Dave Butler the event may bring. “The gala will be attended not only by crime writers but also by publishers and agents. It is a great connection to the publishing world,” he said. Once a warden in Banff National Park, Full Curl is loosely based on events that took place during his employment there. In a departure
from most crime stories, the victims in Butler’s murder mystery are trophy animals in the National Parks. The novel is set in Banff, Cranbrook, Kimberley and Spokane. “I love the area and love the mountains and I wanted to tell a story about places I know well,” Butler said. “To be able to add an international slant on it was fun too.” Having taken a previous Creative Writing course at College of the Rockies, Butler enrolled in a ‘Special Projects’ creative writing course offered by the College. Under the supervision of his instructor, Butler was given the structure and constructive criticism he needed to make his book a reality. “I had this book idea in the back of my head for a few years,” he said. “The course I took at the College was the push I needed to get it down on paper. The feedback I received along the way was both frank and encouraging.” Butler, whose day job is as the Director of Sustainability for Canadian Mountain Holidays LP, is hopeful the recognition his novel is receiving from the Crime Writers of Canada will be the push needed to get it published. He is building upon the experience he gained with Full Curl while working on his second novel, which is also crime fiction. “I see Full Curl’s shortlisting for the Unhanged Arthur as validation that my work has some value and that it is of interest to other people,” Butler said. “I hope to use this experience, and what I learned from my instructor at the College, while working on my next novel. I now have confidence that the story will come.” Learn more about Creative Writing courses at College of the Rockies at: cotr.ca/university

Farmer’s Market moves outdoors this weekend, back to 10th Avenue June 27 Ba rry Coulter
Since January, the Cranbrook Farmer’s Market has been running indoors at the Ktunaxa gym, on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, in an inaugural winter and spring market season. But with the warm temperatures upon us, the Market will move outdoors this Saturday, May 23. “We will stay at the Ktunaxa location (220 Cranbrook Street North), but move the market outdoors onto the grassy area adjacent to the gym,” said Farmer’s Market Manager Erna Jensen Shill. “We just have two markets left at this location — this weekend (May 23) and June 14. We will move downtown June 27, back to our normal spot on 10th Avenue South after Sam Steele Days is done. We’ll start our regular 16-week season, and we’ll be downtown every Saturday. For a complete market schedule and for more information on the
Cranbrook Farmer’s Market, go to the website www.cranbrookfarmersmarket.com. Spring brings fresh Creston strawberries, salad and microgreens, farm eggs, pork, lamb and beef from local area producers, along with baked goods, artisans and body care items. The first winter-spring market season was an over-all success, Jensen-Shill said. “It’s the first year we tried it, so we’re definitely in the growing phase — letting the vendors get an opportunity to try it out and the market patrons learn that we have that opportunity. “But for a lot of our growers and meat producers, they were very happy to have the opportunity to connect with customers who are looking for locally produced food in other months besides our regular market season. “So we’ll certainly work to building on that for next year.”
Road work schedule proposed Continued from page 1 The streets are projects identified by city staff and approved by council earlier this month that will see $2.7 million worth of paving done to numerous areas of the city. The work will be mostly road paving and other road-related projects such as water drainage. There will not be any work done on underground infrastructure such as water and sewer lines or storm sewer systems. Zettel added that a large portion of the roads in the program will be milled at the same time prior to starting the reshaping and resurfacing work. The milling of the pavement is normally done all at one time which leaves the road surfaces without pavement until the road is repaved. This also exposes the exiting valve boxes, catch basins and manholes in the roadways. Proposed schedule •Week of May 25, 2015 Kootenay Street -21st Avenue to Kootenay Place, 26th Avenue South & 2A Street •Week of June 1, 2015
Cranbrook Street North - 2nd Street North to Highway 3, Airport Access Road •Week of June 8, 2015 Industrial Road 2 •Week of June 15, 2015 4th Street South – 8th Avenue South to 11th Avenue South •Week of June 29, 2015 Sylvan Heights (Numerous Avenues & Streets), 26th Avenue South & 2A Street •Week of July 20, 2015 26th Avenue South & 6th Street South; 2nd Street South – 27th Avenue South to 31st Avenue South •Week of July 27, 2015 2nd Street South – Victoria Avenue to 24th Avenue South •Week of August 10, 2015 27th Avenue South & 29th Avenue South Zettel said the schedule could change depending on a number of factors. “The intent is just to give people a quick snapshot at this point of how we see the summer playing out,” continued Zettel, “but as things move along, we’re con-
fident that with the contractor and the machinery and everything in place, we’re certainly going to be advising the public through our local media partners and our website and some doorto-door to let people know when it’s going to start and end.” The 2015 Capital Roads Program was approved by city council on May 11th. The $2.7 million project was awarded to Interoute Construction Ltd., of which BA Blacktop in Cranbrook is a division.

Funding helps families with children in medical need For the Townsman
The Friends of Children Society has received $20,000 from the B.C. government to provide ongoing assistance to East Kootenay families with a child who must travel to receive medical care. “Friends of Children is an amazing organization that is a lifeline for families with a sick child,” Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett said. “Their assistance greatly eases the costs faced by families who are already carrying too heavy an emotional burden, let alone a financial one.” Friends of Children was established in 1998 in Prince George for the purpose of assisting northern B.C. families with children in extraordinary medical need. The East Kootenay branch was formed about 10 years later in Cranbrook. Friends of Children covers non-medical expenses such as travel and accommodation.
“Friends of Children is extremely grateful for Minister Bennett’s success in securing this significant financial contribution to support East Kootenay families,” said Pat Chisholm, East Kootenay Friends of Children support co-ordinator. “With this funding, East Kootenay families can be assured that support is available to them when accessing medical care for their children outside of their home community.” The organization relies on the support of sponsors, donors and volunteers to provide a much-needed service for the East Kootenay and northern B.C. regions. Friends of Children has assisted more than 2,000 families since its inception, and receives about 200 funding requests annually.

Council discusses the nature of contingency
Arne Petryshen
Cranbrook City Council approved granting $500 to the Mount Baker Secondary School Robotics Club to help them to represent B.C. in the upcoming Skills Canada Competition. At the meeting on May 11, Council also approved $500 to go to the PARTY program. Both funds came from the contingency fund. The second approval brought up some ques-
tions from Coun. Wesly Graham about how contingency funding should be spent. “My question is, we just approved the Mount Baker students with robotics because they didn’t know they made it to competition,” Graham said. “In my opinion that’s what contingency fund is for — we have a sports team or something happens that you can’t apply for funds. But this is nothing out of the ordinary, so
PUBLIC NOTICE Pursuant to the authority of Section 26 of the Community Charter, the City of Cranbrook intends to enter into a Lease Agreement with Cando Ventures Corp. dba Resort Tours for the storage of vehicles on airport property located at the Canadian Rockies International Airport located at 9370 Airport Access Road, Cranbrook, B.C., legally described as: Lot A, (formerly Kootenay Indian Reserve No. 1) Kootenay District, Plan NEP23763 and consisting of approximately 640 sq. ft. curious to know why this would come out of contingency. Contingency is more out of the ordinary, spontaneity — something’s happened. “I just have a hard time with that, because once we start tapping this contingency for normal operations, we could be seeing more people applying for this fund, rather than what I would see as contingency funds for the robotics competition or a volleyball team.” Coun. Tom Shypitka agreed and wanted a definition on contingency funding. “Because, yeah, I thought it was one-offs, things that happened in the spur of the moment, those kinds of things,” he
said, noting the PARTY program request seems to be an annual one. CAO Wayne Staudt said the contingency fund is what Coun. Graham noted. “Nobody could anticipate that they were going to go to the Canadian National Robotics competition,” Staudt said. “We really should encourage the PARTY program — and I don’t know if we have or not — to make a grant application in August like we do the other parties. Then they would be considered for a grant to an organization to our budget process. For some reason, we’ve done this a couple of times with them, and they might think this is
the process, but it really is not the right process.” Mayor Lee Pratt noted that the PARTY program did receive some money through the Columbia Basin Community Initiatives Fund, but have not received any money from the original donations that Cranbrook made. Coun. Ron Popoff recalled that a couple meetings ago it was mentioned that some organizations could possibly use the contingency fund to skirt the regular application process. “If you were unsuccessful or didn’t get the money you requested up front, then this was a way of coming in the back door, so I’m cau-
tious of that going forward.” But Popoff said if the PARTY program has been using this process as the way in the past he would be in favour of granting the funds for this time only. “But in the future, this would not, in my opinion, be considered a contingency, because they probably had ample notice,” he said, noting that Council is pursuing a new granting process for next year. The City has $25,000 per year for the contingency fund, and CAO Staudt said they have used $3,000. The robotics team will be heading to Saskatoon for the competition from May 26 to 30.
‘Dixie Swim Club’ opens May 26 Southern Ladies take centre stage in comedy at Centre 64
M i ke R e d f e rn
Five southern ladies, former college friends and members of a college swim team, share the trials and tribulations of their lives when they meet annually in a cottage on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Their revelations are both poignant and hi-
larious and are the stuff of which the comedy, The Dixie Swim Club, is made. In scenes spread over 33 years, this play by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten, playwrights of The Golden Girls and other stage and television hits, takes us through four of these annual reunions,
revealing the changes in each of their lives. Kimberley’s Off Centre Players bring this very funny comedy to the stage of the Theatre at Centre 64 for a 5-day run from May 26 to May 30. The curtain goes up each evening at 7.30, door open at 7 p.m. The play features
Karen Vold-Oaakley in her debut stage role as Sheree, former swim team captain and the group’s leader, desperately trying to maintain her “perfect” life. Joanne Wilkinson plays wisecracking, overachieving lawyer Dinah, dealing with the frustrations of her private life. Michelle

Public Input On Idlewild Lake We would like your input on the future of Idlewild Lake and Park. As a result of recent assessments on the dam at Idlewild Lake, the water levels will be lowered to protect public safety. Cranbrook City Council recognizes the significance of Idlewild Lake to our residents and park users, and is seeking funding to replace the dam and restore the lake. The City sees potential opportunities to enhance and redevelop the park during the dam’s reconstruction. Please provide your input on the future of Idlewild Park by completing a survey on the City website. Paper copies are available for pick-up at Leisure Services or reception at City Hall. The deadline for the survey is Monday May 25, 2015.
There are two teams going and a total of five students. “Congratulations first to Mount Baker for attending another robotics competition,” Popoff said, adding he’d spoken with Bill Walker, teacher at Mount Baker, about the extent of the fundraising the students have been doing. “They’ve done the means test — they’ve been out doing fundraising and applying to various service clubs in town. They are very close to their goal amount of money.” The students’ goal was to raise over $14,000 to cover travel flight and travel expenses, plus the cost of air freight for their robots.

he coroner’s jury convened for seven hours before returning the ver-
dict: “That the said Steven Morgan, Joseph Sengala and William Robinson came to their deaths on Thursday, the 22nd day of May, 1902, at or about the hour of 7:30 o’clock in the afternoon, in what is known as numbers two and three mines, situated on Coal Creek, near the town of Fernie … the property of and worked by the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited; ‘That we, the said jury, find the initial cause of the explosion being at a point in number two mine aforesaid, not clearly defined, and that said initial cause extended from the said undefined point throughout the greater portion of Number 2 and 3 mines, coal dust being the conveying medium; and we find in consequence that the inadequate method of watering and removing of the dust left the mine in such a condition to be dangerous…” The exact point and cause of the explosion may have been undefined but the result was not. For those outside the mine it was a massive blast of fiery coal dust that rose upwards of 1,000 feet above the fan house, the roof of which was never seen again. For Messrs Morgan, Sengala, and Robinson it was posthumous justice, little help that it may have been to them. The death of three men was bad enough, but what made this a disaster was the death of the 125 other men at work in the mine that evening. Not all men, for that matter; Will Robertson (so named in the newspaper accounts but likely the William Robinson of the coroner’s investigation), was 13 years old, one of a number of teenagers to die that day. It remains the third worst mine disaster in the history of Canada, and that’s saying something, given the extremely dangerous coal mining conditions of the day and the regular and numerous deaths and injuries to the miners. The town of Coal Creek, built along the waterway of the same name, was only a few miles east of Fernie. It came into being in the 1890s, nestled tightly upon the hillsides of a chiseled valley laden with coal and, for a time, housed over 1,000 residents. Little more than log huts at first, it soon boasted churches clubs and saloons, all attended by the Slavs, Scandinavians, Welsh, Italians and English who worked side by side in the

Of the estimated 150 workers only 22 escaped. In a stroke of fate Bruce Stewart, formerly of Cranbrook, exited the mine just moments before the blast to attend to some equipment repairs. He lived. S.J. Marsh, another former Cranbrook man, did not. A faded blueprint in the Fernie city hall archives shows dots representing the men who died as they worked alone, in pairs, in clusters, some seemingly untouched in death, killed by the concussion of the explosion, suffocated or poisoned by the deadly methane gas afterdamp that followed; others obliterated completely or so badly mutilated as to be unidentifiable and some, it is believed, simply never found. The rescue work began minutes after the blast but was severely hampered by the presence of lingering gases. Rescuers went in, worked until they were overcome, were carried

out and revived and went in once more. Although the company immediately halted all communication from the mine, rumours spread and tensions ran high among the citizens of Fernie and Coal Creek, fanned by the fact that the inspector of mines had toured the site two days previously and declared it safe. The Cranbrook Herald reported of the fate of Fernie Police Constable Stevens who was said to have remarked that he was sorry that there had not been 200 more men at work when the explosion occurred. The local miners responded by calling at the jail, demanding that Stevens be produced and then, forming two lines from the 500 or so present, forced the constable to remove his uniform and badge and walk between the two rows. He was then escorted to the railroad track and told to head out of town. Whether or not Constable Stevens deserved the banishment he was undoubtedly lucky to be let go unharmed in what was surprisingly the only rebellious act that occurred. Of course, many of those who may have rebelled were dead and
many others in shock. The mere logistics of dealing with so many deaths proved impossible for the town of Fernie and both Cranbrook and Nelson were called upon to supply coffins. The small St. Margaret’s Cemetery on the outskirts of Fernie was quickly cleared of trees as grave after grave was dug and numbered to accept the bodies of the miners. Saturday, May 24 -what would normally have been a town celebration of Empire (Victoria) Day - saw over 30 separate funerals performed as coffin after coffin passed through the streets. The Crows Nest Coal Company agreed to pay all funeral expenses and provide relief against all immediate want and suffering and hastened to reopen the mines (which suffered little damage) as soon as possible. The town of Coal Creek remained until the 1950s when the mines were sealed. Today little remains of the collieries or the town of Coal Creek where, in one mighty blast, 128 miners were hurled into eternity on that fateful day. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

The power and failure of ‘shoulds’
I
am a hard–core reader. I read for my work. I read fiction at meal times and bedtime. I even have a book in the car — just in case. I love suspense and mystery novels; they draw me into other worlds for a short while. I recently picked up the latest novel by Ted Dekker, entitled, “A.D. 30”. It tells the story of Maviah, the outcast daughter of a powerful Bedu sheikh. Born out of wedlock and sold as a slave in Egypt, she eventually she finds her way back home to Arabia and then on to Palestine, where she meets a man named Yeshua — the Jewish name of the one we know as Jesus. I’m not going to say any more about the novel, so no spoiler alerts are necessary. The characters were sympathetic and believable, the story was tight, and the historical research was accurate. What has given me pause to reflect is a short essay by Dekker at the beginning of the book, “My Journey to A.D. 30”. Dekker tells us that he grew up as “the son of missionaries who left everything in the west to take the good news to a tribe of cannibals in Indonesia. They were heroes in all respects and taught me many wonderful things, not least among them all the virtues and values of the Christian life. What a beautiful example they showed me.” So far, so good. But then Dekker narrates a story in which he gradually began to feel like a failure. His Christian faith seemed … somehow less than what he thought it should be. He writes,
“As I grew older, all the polished answers I memorized in Sunday school seemed to fail me on one level or another, sometimes quite spectacularly. I begin to see cracks in what had once seemed so simple. “I was supposed to have special powers to love others and turn the other cheek and refrain from gossip and not judge. I was supposed to be a shining example, known by the world for my extravagant love, grace, and power in all respects. And yet, while I heard the rhetoric of others, I didn’t seem to have these powers myself. “During my teens, I was Rev. Yme sure that it was uniquely my — I didn’t have enough Woensdregt fault faith, I needed to try harder and do better. Others seem to have it all together, but I was a failure. “Can you relate? “Then I began to notice that everyone seemed to be in the same boat, beginning with those I knew the best. When my relationships challenged all of my notions of love, when disease came close to home, when friends turned on me, when I struggle to pay my bills, when life sucked me dry, I began to wonder where all the power to live life more abundantly had gone. Then I began to question whether or not it has ever really been there in the first place. Perhaps that’s why I couldn’t measure up. “So I pressed in harder with the hope of discovering God’s love. But I still couldn’t measure up. “And when I couldn’t measure up, I began to see with perfect clarity that those who claimed to live holy lives were just like me and only lied to themselves — a fact
that was apparent to everyone but them …” My first thought after reading those paragraphs was, “How sad! How utterly, unbearably sad.” I remember as a child growing up in a church where the same kind of completely unrealistic expectations were laid on people. The language of this church, and others like it (such as Dekker’s) was filled with “shoulds” when the reality of most of our lives is that we can’t. “Shoulds” just make us feel guiltier, more like a failure. “Shoulds” just add to the already heavy burdens so many of us bear. Our best intentions are never good enough. I am relieved and glad that I have found another way. More accurately, I am relieved and glad that another way has found me. The Christian way is not about “shoulds.” It never has been. To think this way is to turn Christian faith into a religion with rules and beliefs and a narrowly defined way. But Jesus never came to do that. Jesus — Yeshua — pointed us to a relationship with a loving and compassionate God who sets us free so that we might live a more abundant life. One of the church’s earliest leaders, Augustine, once said “Love God, and do as you please.” It was echoed by Martin Luther many centuries later. The profound truth of this is that as we love God, we will also love what God loves. It’s a much freer way of living than a life of “shoulds” ever could be. Cranbrook’s physique & fitness community grows with strong showing at NPAA Canada Classic Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
works with her athletes on building muscle, before moving into a leaning-out phase. The final phase of preparation sees athletes cut carbohydrates while increasing protein intake. Dickson trains athletes out of Aspire2BFit Training Facility, which she opened in September 2014. The training facility is located at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook. As it stands, Dickson has a waiting list of hopeful clients at her Cranbrook facility. As a part of her on-going search for a healthier lifestyle, Dickson will be opening the Beyond Training Cafe in July/August 2015, also located at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook. Dickson’s dedication and passion for fitness has inspired her to expand her Aspire2BFit brand beyond Cranbrook as well. She is slated to open and oversee a brand new Aspire2BFit Training Facility in Salmon Arm, B.C., in August 2015 and plans on opening training facilities at other Prestige Hotels & Resorts locations
throughout B.C. “I’ll oversee and manage, train [a local trainer] according to my training methods, with use of Isagenix as their fuel source,” Dickson said. “It will be really neat. We’re going to go from town to town and duplicate every single one. “It will be a lot of work, but I’m very fortunate and I’m very appreciative of it. It will come together.” Prestige Hotels & Resorts has locations in Cranbrook, Golden, Kelowna, Nelson, Radium, Rossland, Salmon Arm, Smithers, Sooke and Vernon. A big part of Dickson’s philosophy and approach to fitness and a healthier lifestyle comes from her experience as an independent associate for Isagenix, a health and wellness solutions company. The NPAA Canada Classic, held at the University Theatre at the University of Calgary, saw a total of 190 athletes compete in five different categories -men’s bodybuilding, men’s physique, women’s bikini model, women’s figure and women’s fitness model.

Cranbrook’s place on the world stage of physique and fitness modelling continues to grow in more ways than one. The Natural Physique and Athletics Association (NPAA) Canada Classic was hosted in Calgary on May 17, with eight Cranbrook athletes competing as members of Team Dickson, coached by Cranbrook-based trainer Laurie Dickson. “I’m proud of each and every single one of them,” Dickson said. “It was an absolutely perfect representation of Team Dickson -- polished -- and also representing Cranbrook and area.” Team Dickson put forth a strong showing, with two competitors advancing to the International Federation of Physique Athletes (IFPA) Yorton Cup in Washington, D.C., slated for Oct. 24, 2015. Anael Delisle (tall bikini and open bikini) and Rachel Cohen (elite pro bikini) qualified for the world championship, joining Erika Rieve-Palmer (figure) as Cranbrook athletes
headed to Washington in late October. Corianne Smithhurst was nominated for the NPAA Transformation Award, which is given annually to an NPAA athlete who has shown dedication to fitness while battling and overcoming physical and/or emotional obstacles, including but not limited to weight loss, weight gain, impairment, illness or addiction. Additionally, Dickson was nominated for the NPAA Coach/Trainer of the Year Award. “It’s a huge feeling of accomplishment on a personal level because I’m not competing anymore,” Dickson said. “It’s an honour for me to show other people how to implement the tools they already have.” Dickson was previously named the 2013 NPAA Coach/Trainer of the Year following a long competitive career that saw her claim numerous titles on the national and international physique and fitness stage. According to Dickson, the process to prepare an athlete for a show carries out over a six-month period, which features three phases. First, Dickson

Dynamiters’ forward Coy Prevost latest to join AJHL’s Canmore Eagles Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Alberta exodus continues for the Kimberley Dynamiters. Thursday afternoon, the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles announced forward Coy Prevost (1997) had committed to the team for the 2015-16 season. “Canmore is close to my home and looks like an ideal place for me to develop my hockey skills,” Prevost said in an Eagles’ press release. “They don’t have many 17-year-olds on their roster, so if I play well I could play there for the next three years and hopefully earn an invitation to play hockey for a Canadian university down the road. “I can’t wait for train-
ing camp to begin.” Prevost joins forward B r a d e n Saretsky as the second member of Kimberley’s 2015 KIJHL-champion Dynamiters to commit to the Canmore Eagles this off-season. A native of Kimberley, Prevost claimed the K I J H L’s Eddie Mountain Division Rookie of the Year Award after posting 14 goals and 49 points in 50 games during the 201415 campaign. The 6-foot-1, 185pound forward added 11
goals and 19 points in 22 KIJHL playoff games, before producing one goal in three games at the Cyclone Taylor Cup -- the B.C. Junior ‘B’ provincial championship. “Coy will bring some good size to our team and his offensive numbers certainly speak for themselves,” said Andrew Milne, Eagles’ head coach and general manager, in a team press release. “He is a hard-working forward who likes to force turnovers in the offensive zone and he has
the hands to put the puck in the net. “We want to recruit winners to our hockey club to help create a winning culture in the dressing room and both Saretsky and Prevost bring that with them. We are excited to see what these two players can bring to our lineup next season.” Prevost’s ability to drive the net hard helped the Nitros claim Kimberley’s first KIJHL title since the Kimberley Knights won it all in 1980. Saretsky, a native of West Kelowna, committed to the Eagles on May 8. The Eagles finished the 2014-15 season sixth in the AJHL’s Viterra South Division with a record of 27-31-2.

Former Avalanche volleyball player represents Australia on international stage For The Townsman
Former College of the Rockies men’s Avalanche volleyball player Curtis Stockton recently finished representing his country as a member of the Australian National Junior Volleyball Team. “I am extremely excited to be given another opportunity by my country to represent them on the volleyball court,” Stockton said. “I think everyone at College of the Rockies who has been involved in my vol-
leyball development over the past three years.” Stockton and Australia competed at the 2015 Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championships in Myanmar from May 12 to 20, compiling a round-robin record of 1-2 and finishing in 10th place out of 16 teams. The Australian Junior Men’s Development Program (JMDP) consists of national camps and international tour for targeted athletes from across Australia.
Aaron Hernandez legal proceedings continue

Denise L avoie Associated Press
BOSTON - Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez, sporting a new neck tattoo while making his first court appearance since being sentenced to life in prison for murder, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to a charge he tried to silence a witness in a separate double murder case by shooting him in the face. The tattoo, on the right side of his neck, includes the word “Lifetime” above a star. The bottom portion of the tattoo was obscured by his shirt collar. It’s a violation of Massachusetts prison regulations to get a tattoo, to tattoo someone else or to possess tattoo paraphernalia while incarcerated. Possible sanctions include disciplinary detention for up to 10 days and loss of a privilege such as television or radio for up to 60 days. The Department of Correction did not immediately return calls seeking comment on whether Hernandez has been disciplined. Hernandez was convicted last month in Fall River in the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating Hernandez’s fiancee’s sister. The former New England Patriots tight end was in a Boston courtroom Thursday to be arraigned on a witness intimidation charge in the shooting of his former friend Alexander Bradley. Bradley was in a Boston nightclub with Hernandez on July 16, 2012, when they encountered two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. After de Abreu accidentally bumped into Hernandez, spilling his drink, Hernandez became irate, followed the men and then fired five shots into their car while they were stopped at a red light, killing de Abreu and Furtado and injuring a third man, prosecutors said. In court Thursday, prosecutor Patrick Haggan said Bradley witnessed the shooting. Seven months later, Haggan said, Hernandez and Bradley were at a nightclub near Riviera Beach, Florida, when Hernandez told Bradley he saw two men he believed were undercover police officers watching him. Bradley responded, “It’s probably because of the stupid stuff you did up there in Boston,” Haggan said. The next night, the two went to another nightclub. They argued over the bill and over a phone Bradley left, Haggan said. Bradley fell asleep on the ride back to their hotel, and when he woke up, Hernandez was pointing a handgun at his face, Haggan said. Bradley suffered a near-fatal wound, resulting in the loss of his right eye, Haggan said. Prosecutors asked Judge Jeffrey Locke to join the witness intimidation case with the murder charges against Hernandez so the cases can be tried together. The judge scheduled a hearing for June 4 to discuss combining the cases and to set a trial date. He said he hoped the case could go to trial in November. Hernandez’s lawyers suggested January instead. Haggan said prosecutors want to do DNA testing on the handle of a .38-calibre gun they believe was used in the double killing. Associated Press reporter Amy Anthony contributed to this report.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) Clear through any mandatory errands and details quickly, as you see a special opportunity or meeting heading your direction. Others admire your resourcefulness, though they also might be intimidated by it. Treat a family member with care. Tonight: As you like it. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The recent ease of communication has somewhat withered. You will have to be more persistent with confirmation and follow through. A partner could prove to be unusually challenging. Just let this person’s words roll right off you. Tonight: Make it an early night. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You have entered a period where everything flows more easily. You might need to make the first move, and quickly at that. You’ll see a new vision of what is possible. Start sharing it with others, and you will like the results. Tonight: Out and about.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll get a second wind as the day ends. Make sure you have tied up all loose ends and you leave with a clean desk. Once you meet up with a friend, you’ll loosen up. You might not have realized how much self-discipline you had to use this week. Tonight: Let your hair down. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your momentum picks up as the day gets older. You’ll sense a difference in others’ moods as well. If you want, adjust your schedule to visit with a friend who is having a difficult time. Let go of a need to have situations go as you would like. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might want to assume a lower profile than usual. You have put all your efforts into whatever you were doing this week. Some time off seems more than necessary. Releasing yourself from obligations, even for just a day, revitalizes you. Tonight: Not to be found. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Zero in on what you want, and
Tundra
don’t let anyone stop you. You are heading down the path to victory, and you know it. Be as clear as possible. Understand what is happening with a child or loved one. Make this person’s wish a reality. Tonight: Where the action is. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Pressure builds, and you’ll be able to reach the goal you have desired. You might want to answer a question a child poses. Be aware of your choices. You understand the power of mystery, but have you experimented with the strength of openness? Tonight: A must appearance. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ll feel as if you have done your fair share in a partnership. On some level, you might be holding your breath to see which way the issue tumbles. Be willing to interact with a key person and clear the air. Tonight: The only answer is “yes.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be on top of a problem without realizing it. You will like the results more if you
lie low for now. Take a walk, and detach from all the mixed messages your mind seems to be playing. Try to maintain a positive attitude. Tonight: The weekend begins now! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Defer to others while you can. You might experience an inordinate amount of pressure to present a topic in a certain way. A friend doesn’t seem to be getting the complete visual of what you are doing. Honor your own thoughts first. Tonight: Let others make the first move. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Take a stand if you feel you must, but with everything that is happening, your action might lose some of its power. Stay on top of an important project. Take your time this afternoon, and don’t rush a conversation with a key loved one. Tonight: Let the world be your oyster. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I’ve been seeing (and sleeping with) “Jordan”’ for eight months. We met at the gym, and I asked him out because I had an amazing feeling about him. Since then, I’ve become totally infatuated. He is one of the kindest men I’ve ever met. I thought I saw a future for us. But the other day, Jordan casually mentioned that he needed to change my name in his phone. When I asked what he meant, he said he still had me listed as ‘’girl from the gym.” I couldn’t believe it. We’ve been together eight months! I expressed my hurt and told him that such a thing was very cold. He didn’t seem to think it was a big deal. But, Annie, I haven’t been able to get over this detail. I see it as a total lack of respect and proof of my impermanence in his life, and it means I’m definitely not someone important to him. Am I overreacting? I thought he was actually the one. -- Phony Love Dear Love: You are wildly overreacting. This is not an issue of coldness, impermanence or lack of importance. It’s laziness. When Jordan first met you, you asked him out. You became “girl from the gym” so he would remember who you were. As you spent more time together, he grew to care about you, but editing your name in his contact list required a minor effort that he probably kept putting aside since he knew how to reach you. Now the relationship is important, and he wants to look you up with your real name. The fact that he should have done this six months ago is irrelevant. He’s doing it now. If everything else is wonderful, a better response would have been to laugh and recognize that nobody’s perfect. Dear Annie: This is in reference to the letter from “Sad Mom,” who said a boy in her son’s school committed suicide. She said the cause of death was not explained and there had been irresponsible speculation on social media. I have been in the funeral business for five years. Giving information like that is up to the family. It’s their call. What the school wants, what the other parents want or what is happening on social media is not important to them. They are grieving, and what they choose to say is entirely their business. -- Funeral Home Manager Dear Funeral: We completely agree that details about the cause of death are only to be shared by family members who wish to do so. It is no one else’s business, and the family should not be burdened by others’ curiosity. But in a school, the students’ concerns and fears should not be ignored as though nothing happened. This means acknowledging that there has been a death, allowing the students to grieve and providing counseling for those who need it. Most schools, fortunately, already have such programs in place, and we hope those that do not yet have one will look into it. Gordon Douglas Hogg May 18, 1956 - May 17, 2015 Gordon was born in Nelson British Columbia on Friday May 18, 1956. When he was a few months old, he moved with his family to Revelstoke BC. In the summer of 1977, he and his family moved to Cranbrook, BC where they were building a house in the south end. When he finished High School, Gordon got on with the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked in the shops until his accident in 1977. While dealing with the loss of use in his legs, he lived in Vancouver, BC for rehabilitation which left him confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. While in Vancouver, he took computer and bookkeeping courses. He also enjoyed learning to scuba dive and participated in wheelchair basketball. In 1989/90 Gordon came back to Cranbrook to be near his family and continued to take courses in accounting. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends playing cards, listening to music and having a good time.
We will invest your gift wisely. We will carry out your wishes. We will ensure your gift has lasting impact. We will honour your generosity.
Gordon passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday May 17, 2015. He leaves behind his mother Mildred, sister Jean (Brian Jensen), brother Jim (Joanne Sullivan), 2 nieces and 5 nephews and the next generation of 4 great-nieces and 3 great-nephews who came to know him as Gaffer and also cousins. Gordon was predeceased by his father William, brothers Bill and Trevor and his Grandparents Hogg and White.
The loss of a loved one is a time of profound sadness. We offer our condolences. When the time is right, we would be honoured to help you to ensure the legacy of your loved one is felt in our community forever. 250.426.1119 www.cranbrookcf.ca

Petitions circulate over Alberta school team name Canadian Press
Two online petitions are circulating regarding the name for sports teams from a southern Alberta high school. One petition calling for the Medicine Hat High School to change the Mohawks team name has received about 100 signatures. But another one supporting the name has been signed by more than 900 people. School division Supt. Grant Henderson says the school board will be looking more closely at the issue in coming weeks. Henderson says more information is needed about the specific concern around the name. He says school officials have only heard a little bit from both sides. “We won’t react until we get more specifics,” he said. “We want to consider both viewpoints and get that information before determining the next step.” Grade 12 student Suzanne Tripp, who launched the petition calling for a name change, said the Mohawks “are a culture, not a mascot.” Rick Preikschas, a high school alumnus from the Standoff reserve, started the petition to keep the name. He said it’s up to First Nations to decide whether the moniker is racist. “I feel that the naming of the school’s sports team and the displaying of the logo is an honour to us as a First Nations people,” reads part of his petition. “I feel that it is a way to relate to the First Nations of Canada and serves as a reminder of the native heritage of the Canadian nation.” Medicine Hat High School is not the first to grapple with the issue of a name for its sports teams. Balfour Collegiate in Regina changed its team name to Bears from Redmen in December. And Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon and Western Canada High School in Calgary have also ditched the Redmen name. Both schools now call their teams the Redhawks.
