Bamfield kids help plant 40 millionth seedling

Students from Bamfield Community school helped make Vancouver Island a little bit greener in April with the planting of the 40 millionth seedling for Island Timberlands. The special cedar seedling was planted on April 10 in an Island Timberlands cut block 57 kilometres from Port Alberni in Huu-ay-aht
traditional territory. Along with witnessing the planting of the 40 millionth seedling, the Bamfield school students had the opportunity to plant their own cedar seedlings in the cut block in Sarita. “I hope these youth will
be able to remember where they were today so they can come out here and recognize where they planted trees,” Huu-ay– Jeff Cook aht First Nation elected Chief Councillor Jeff Cook, who was present for the planting ceremony, said.
‘I make it a personal mission to re-evaluate harvesting.’
“They will know that they made a difference today by planting these cedar.” But to Cook, the seedlings planted that day had a special significance. “I make it a personal mission to re-evaluate harvesting on our treaty settlement lands,” said Cook. “We could leave those trees there for the next couple hundred years if we plan it right.”

Legion looking for new members Did you know that the Legion Branch #169 came into existence in the early 1930’s when several WWI veterans gathered to form what was then called the Alberni District Veterans Association? At that time there were two cities, Alberni and Port Alberni. Legion Branch #169 started Feb. 25, 1942. They built a new hall on Victoria Quay and the first meeting was held there in June of 1947. Legion Branch #55 had its start May 9, 1918 with a dinner at the Somass Hotel to honour the returned veterans. It was decided to form a Branch of the Great War Veteran’s Association. They received their charter on March 22, 1919. Both Legions operated until spring of 2011 when they amalgamated and had their charters retired and a new one created as the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch #293 at the Victoria Quay location. The Legion annually donates $40,000 into the community from their weekly Wednesday night bingo, Poppy fund and gaming. For example they sponsor the Army Cadets, Sea Cadets and Navy League. They also sponsor youth scholarships and bursaries, donate to non-profit and not-for-profit organizations in the Valley as well as to veterans and youth sports. Due to declining and aging membership funding of these groups could be at risk if they don’t get some new members at the Legion. So what are the requirements for membership? There is no military affiliation requirement, anyone can join. The only requirement is a nominal membership fee and a willingness to share a small portion of your time.
The Legion is the driving force behind the local poppy campaign and Remembrance Day ceremony. The Legion facility that is available for private parties such as weddings, funeral teas, anniversaries etc. This facility has a capacity of 100, full kitchen and bar available. The Ladies Auxiliary is an integral part of the organization and supplies much of the background support such as cooking and serving at many of the events and functions. If your curiosity is have peaked and you would like to learn more about the Legion please call for more information. The office number is 250-723-5042 or the lounge at 250-723-7513.
What goes on at the branch? There are regular meat draws every Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm, at half hour increments. There is bingo every Wednesday night at 6:45 pm, and they have a steak night and dance once every month. The Legion brings in entertainment, like this month Bonnie Kilrow, an impersonator singer. Last month they had an Elvis impersonator, who played to a full house . Bonnie will be likely to do the same, you can check and see if there are still tickets left. There is also an annual golf tournament, fishing derby and a Barkley Sound Cruise to Bamfield and back, and an open house during Legion week, the last week of June.

“Get out and bike to work, to school or any place else you have to go,” says John Mayba, organizer of the annual Bike to Work Week event taking place May 25–31. Port Alberni’s Bike to Work committee has been working hard to organize a great lineup of cycling celebration events for residents of all ages. There’s an event every day of the week. Most of the events are a chance to stop for a few minutes on your way to wherever you are going. However, on Wednesday, May 27 the event will include a “bike valet” service at Echo Centre so that you can safely park your bike while you go swimming, go to the library or attend other recreational activities at Echo on Wednesday morning. The first step is to register on line at www.biketowork.ca. It’s easy to do and over 100 people have already registered.

Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.
Celebrating one of Abbeyfield’s best to provide music to the community, but to work on behalf of the seniors as an advocate by representing them at some seniors organizations. “I love singing and I have done it since my early years when I used to sing at church choirs and school performances.” Born in Vancouver, Springer moved to the Comox Valley in 1985 and later, after the passing of her husband in 1986, she

went to live in Victoria and, subsequently moved to Port Alberni in 1997. “I moved here because of one of my daughters”, says the mother of five girls and a boy. Her association with the seniors in Port Alberni began at the Elder College when she met Ken Whiteman, who was, at that time, member of the Fir Park and Echo Villages board, and his wife Lois, an activity program staff member, who invited her to conduct meditation sessions in the seniors’ home. “To have these sessions on a weekly basis was a very rewarding experience for me. The calm and relaxing atmosphere that meditation provides to people is

14 years. Later on, she co-founded the Fir Park Village/Echo Village Foundation, a society that aims to fund raise and assist with the acquisition of items not included in their budgets. Since the opening of Heritage Place over eight years ago, she has been part of the board of directors of this assisted living home and is currently their president. By combining her love for music and desire to advocate on behalf of the Valley senior population, Springer has become a name to be reckoned with.

by well-known community speakers and leaders who bring their comments and expertise to share them at their meetings. “Before our municipal election, for example, all the candidates were invited to speak, and stated their political platform and answered our questions”, she says. “And recently, local figures, such as the publisher of the Alberni Valley Times and the mayor of the city, took part in our meetings”, she adds. She’s taken courses at the North Island College a few years ago and found it a very rewarding activity. “Poetry is a special form of literature that allows you to express something in a different way. Actually, I write about many things, from what I see through my apartment window to life and death.” To add to her busy calendar of activities, she is currently the president of the Strata Council. No doubt that this community has benefited enormously from Sylvia Springer’s dedication to serve it with love.
The City of Port Alberni invites local groups and organizations to apply for permissive tax exemption for the year 2016. Application forms are available from the City Clerk's Department at City Hall. Completed applications must be received by 4:30 pm on Friday, June 26th, 2015 and are to be submitted to: Davina Hartwell, City Clerk City of Port Alberni 4850 Argyle Street Port Alberni BC V9Y 1V8 Phone: 250-720-2810

She enthusiastically endorses policies that benefit the residents’ needs as well as programs that make their lives more enjoyable. As a President of Heritage Place, she is often seen taking part at events that are organized by the staff of the home, from the recognition of their volunteers at special programs, to the celebration of Mother’s Day event and, of course, the always popular performances by the Barclay Sounds Choir, which sings regularly for the tenants of the home and as well as other seniors homes of the Valley. When asked about her deep interest in the seniors’ population, she stated that “our senior population is changing fast and we have to advocate for them in order to continue improving the quality of their lives. They appreciate what we do, as a Board, and that, in itself, is an incentive for all of us.” Springer has also been actively involved in the monthly “Food and Philosophy” group with Winston Joseph for the past 16 years, a meeting that is attended

For the Huu-ayaht, planning it right involves making sure that their other business ventures are successful. “The bigger ones we’re thinking about immediately are the LNG project and the trans-shipment hub,” Cook said. “Those are huge projects and reap a lot more benefits than harvesting on our treaty settlement lands does.” Island Timberlands had invited Cook to take part in the ceremony a year-anda-half ago. “We said yes because we’re interested in the environment and the future of our traditional area,” said Cook. Taking care of the
Huu-ay-aht traditional territory is important to Cook and all Huuay-aht citizens. “It’s important because we have to take care of our area and our territory and be involved in some way.” According to Island Timberlands president Darshan Sihota, the cut block in Sarita will be reforested with mainly cedar seedlings. Some Douglas fir to be planted closer to the road and hemlock, a prolific seed producer which is native to the area, is expected to return to the area on its own. The plot where the planting took place was originally planted 65 years ago, said Sihota. reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews
