Treena Mielke On The Other Side

In my lifetime I have been the lucky recipient of lots of bouquets of beautiful flowers. Gorgeous delicate tea roses, crimson carnations and daffodils, the colour of spring. Beautiful orchids, only tinged with a breathtaking hue of something lovely, magnificent lilies and delightful daisies have arrived at my doorstep, all artfully displayed in crystal vases that sparkle with flower shop perfection. But, even with such a delightful potpourri of bouquets that live in my garden of memories, there is one

would be fortunate, indeed, blessed to waste time wisely by sitting in the sun with a child and creating a dandelion chain. This year, however, I momentarily forgot all about such things. I felt, instead, horrified that my entire lawn, front and back, was profusely covered with dandelions. I held my head down in shame. “What would the neighbors think?” I quickly ran to the nearest store to buy something to murder the pesky little weeds and instructed my husband to use it liberally that afternoon. When I arrived home from work I didn’t want to be greeted by the sight of a green and yellow polka

dotted lawn, I said, in my grouchy grown up, stressed out voice. My husband followed instructions, but those dandelions, like a bad weed or a bad penny or whatever it is that’s bad, did not die. They did not even seem wounded, but the next morning peeped up, bright and lively and yellow as ever. In frustration, I phoned my friend, who has flower power and knows how to eradicate weeds and other unwanted things from one’s lawn. He listened to my laments sympathetically, but I fear, also with a carefully concealed hint of boredom. “Don’t worry, they’ll soon to be gone on their own, just mow their heads off.”

I listened to his advice, chose to ignore it and, instead, drove to one of the retail outlets where dandelion poison is a hot item. But, somehow when I got to the store and looked at the elaborate display of Killex, I had to agree. “Was it really worth it?” And, so I drove home, mowed the lawn, which effectively chopped the heads off. And, as I mowed I remembered. I remembered a young woman who was ridiculously happy because someone with grubby little hands handed her a painstakingly picked dandelion bouquet. And the memory made me smile. Perception! It’s all about perception!

Reflections of a road trip on the May long weekend

Jonah Kondro

Production:

bouquet that truly will never be forgotten. Over the years, this humble slightly wilted bouquet has been unceremoniously handed to me by a little person, who clutches the shaggy offering in a grubby hand. The dandelion bouquet. There are no written rules about receiving such a bouquet in the proper manner, but I do believe it is acceptable to receive the flowers graciously, immediately place them in a Mason jar and put the arrangement in the middle of the kitchen table. Cookies and milk or a jam and peanut butter sandwich are usually then served as a way of saying ‘thanks.’ Dandelion bouquets are so much a part of the growing up years; the busy years when life is not ruled by manicured dandelion free lawns and such humble bouquets are presented and accepted with the simplicity of love and grace. Now, as I flashback to those long ago days of summer, I have come to the sad but true realization that one

Everyone in Alberta seems to forcefully trudge through a cold dark winter and the May-long weekend is used as a great big catharsis to celebrate the end to the winter purgatory. Victoria Day adds to a weekend and a magical birth of seventy-two hours of freedom

are gifted to anyone to go wherever, camp anywhere, and listen to music, in the middle of a campground through the open vehicle door’s stereo speakers. If your camp site group is lucky, someone will have hooked up last year’s Christmas lights to a car battery, running an inverter on the picnic table. These strings of lights can be swung overhead like a disco cowboy roper from the future. The red, blue, green, and white string of lights is a dynamic symbol of freedom and shows that site 70 likes to party. If your camp site group is lucky, this could have been your May long weekend possibility — it was my reality. My weekend was not

static. Three of us embarked on a weird mission to recover a stranded dune buggy in B.C. A campsite near Canmore was our Friday night stop. The one vehicle convoy braved the high gas prices and resisted the purchase of tourist knickknacks through Banff and Radium. The dune buggy in question was on a ranch near Fort Steele, and its location and retrieval took up most up most of Saturday. Sunday morning the crew all awoke with compounded hangovers in a motel room in Cranbrook. The one vehicle convoy decided to continue east into Pincher Creek for a night. It was there, in the early evening, that the three grown men of the crew spent an

hour throwing rocks into a creek and contemplating modern existence. The philosophical deliberations were carried back into the camp site. Then the crew met some vegans from Calgary and drank their homemade mead with them. The road trip loop was complete when the one vehicle convoy travelled north back to Central Alberta on last day of the holiday of the weekend. The whole weekend operation was like a circus sideshow set loose upon the world. The crew and the acquired dune buggy all returned home safely though. Some fared better than others during the thirteen-hundred kilometers of road trip mysticism. Humans were built

to collect pinecones, find shiny things in the banks near the river, and forge and hunt for food. High scores on Angry Birds, Tinder dating, and ordering from Pizza Hut has replaced the need for basic human survival skills. Our evolution, however, has not caught up to the exponential surge of technology that has made is easier to live as a human on planet Earth. The Japanese have a term called Shinrin Yoku, which translates into the English phrase “forest bathing”. Aside from the novelty that May long camping and road tripping can give, we all just need a little time in the woods to shake loose the shadows of a past winter and the demons of the modern world.

Local Synergy Group discussed Regulatory Compliance at meeting The presentation topic for the Rimbey Regional Synergy Group (RRSG) May 21 regular meeting was focused on the Alberta Energy Regulator’s role in providing transparency in compliance reporting, Their new Compliance Dashboard, a tool they have in place to provide public access to information on industry compliance and non-compliances will be featured in the presentation. RRSG holds regular bi-monthly meetings to hear updates on local industry activities, discuss local activity impacts and opportunities, and to share information about industry related practices in general. These meetings are also a great opportunity for industry representatives to learn more about the agricultural practices and implications to the landowners in the local community. Companies change ownership and new companies move into the area. RRSG meetings provide a regular opportunity for these companies to share information on their current and planned activities and answer questions that people may have regarding their operations. This is also a great opportunity for local residents and landowners to connect with the industry reps to let them know about local community events and initiatives that might be of interest. Meeting attendance typically includes landowners and community residents, local county representatives, local industry companies, local businesses and the Alberta Energy Regulator. Meetings are held in Bluffton on the third Thursday of every second month, January through November. There is no meeting in July, but the group will be hosting a large Open House event on June 18th in Rimbey. Regular meetings start with lunch and are open to the public. An RSVP is appreciated to help plan for the lunch. For more information contact the group’s

Thanks goes out to Rimbey Ag Society Dear Editor, The Rimbey Interclub 4-H Beef Committee would like to thank the Rimbey Ag Society, and all volunteers for helping make this year's 4-H show and sale the success it was. We truly appreciate all the extra hours and work that went on behind the scenes, by both the Ag society and the 4-H parents who did make an effort to help prepare the new Agrim for this years event. The Agrim is an incredible new facility, which our community is very fortunate to have. Even though the facility was not 100 per cent complete, the Ag board went out of their way to accommodate our 4-H clubs, and work with us to ensure we had a fabulous new facility to use. Without the support of local business, community and families events like this do not happen. We look forward to a continued relationship with the Rimbey Ag Society, and thank them for their role in helping develop our youth into becoming future leaders in our communities. Aquatic centre is now open BY TREENA MIELKE

It’s been a long, cold winter, but it’s over now and to mark the start of a new season, the Rimbey Aquatic Centre is open for business. The pool and waterslide opened on the long weekend, and despite the below normal temperatures, a few hardy souls braved the wind and rain to take a dip in Rimbey’s very own outdoor swimming pool. Cindy Bowie, director of community services for Rimbey said the pool was closed for a few days last week, but opened again on Friday and, barring any unforeseen difficulties, will be

open for regular hours during May and June. Two assistant pool managers have been hired for the season. Hayley Lush, an experienced senior lifeguard, who has worked at the pool previously will be responsible for opening the pool during the week and also teach Red Cross swimming lessons. Mark Hawkings, a graduate from Rimbey High School, who is also a lifeguard, will look after staff scheduling and will work mostly evenings and weekends. The splash park and hot tubs are not yet open and the hiring process for lifeguards is not yet completed.

Busy long weekend for Rimbey RCMP

This week, Rimbey RCMP Detachment responded to 68 calls for service including several stolen vehicles, thefts, domestic disputes, illicit drugs and off-highway vehicle collisions. Busy long weekend Does anyone remember the Andy Griffith Show and the little town of Mayberry? When I accepted a transfer from the busy city to Rimbey, I had Mayberry envisioned in my mind. For the most part, Rimbey is that perfect little town that compares to the fictional town of Mayberry.

This week, I cannot characterize Rimbey as the sleepy hollow of Mayberry. As part of the May Long Weekend Task Force, Rimbey RCMP partnered with several other agencies to respond to the increased calls for service. Gull Lake, Medicine Lake, North Saskatchewan River and the Town of Rimbey see a huge increase in population during the long weekend. Here is a glimpse of what we encountered this week: Numerous tickets issued A Rimbey Mountie teamed up with a Forestry Officer and patrolled the backcountry near Medicine Lake and the North Saskatchewan River by way of off-highway vehicle. Other officers patrolled the area by way of four-wheel drive police trucks. Police issued numerous tickets for no insurance, no registration and for driving while suspended. There were impaired drivers operating ATV’s who were arrested and charged.

ATV rollover Police, EMS, Fire Department and STARS personnel responded to an ATV rollover in the backcountry near Aurora Hall. The victim sustained nonlife threatening injuries. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in that incident. Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet which likely saved his life. Three-year-old passenger Members had three vehicles take off on them when conducting traffic stops. In each case, the vehicle was either stolen or the drivers were already suspended and had no insurance on their vehicle. In one case, a 30-year-old female driving an Oldsmobile car took off on police when they turned on the red and blue lights and siren. The officer chose not to pursue the car on the gravel roads, instead he called local farmers and got them to keep the officer posted as to where the car was last seen. Once the dust settled, police moved into

the area where the car was last seen and found the dangerous driver walking down the road carrying her little three-year-old daughter. On the road were bits and pieces of her tire which she had blown trying to evade police. Her male counterpart had jumped into the driver’s seat and fled west of Aurora Hall driving on the rim leaving the woman and child stranded. The fine member of society did not get very far with no tire and finally abandoned the car in a farmer’s driveway and fled on foot into the bush nearby. Police dispatched a K9 unit to the scene and tracked the man until police were able to determine who he, in fact, was. Once police had his identity, the chase was called off and a warrant was issued for the man who is very well known to police. The female driver was arrested and charged with over $8,000 in fines and had her car seized. Children Services were dispatched to intervene on behalf of the child’s welfare. It was the little girl’s birthday. RCMP busy During the busy weekend, officers charged a local man with possession of methamphetamine, wrote over 100 tickets, seized five motor vehicles, charged three impaired drivers and recovered several stolen vehicles. On the lighter side of things, an officer stopped a speeding motorcycle near Rimbey. The driver did not possess a class 6 drivers license which is required to operate a motorcycle. If he were riding with other bikers who had a class 6, he could continue to drive with his class 5 license under their direct supervision. While the officer was contemplating towing the bike, the driver noticed three other Harley enthusiasts coming in their direction. He waved down the other riders and asked if he could ride with them so his motorcycle didn’t have to get towed. The officer asked the three other bikers for their licenses to ensure they had the proper licenses. That is when the officer got blank stares followed by looks of desperation. They didn’t have class 6 licenses either! Evidently, it was a good week to own a tow company!

A novel written by an Edmonton author who grew up in Rimbey has been short listed for the Alberta Readers’ Choice Award sponsored by the Edmonton Public Library. Kate Boorman’s debut young adult fiction, WINTERKILL is one of five on the short list. “I was very thrilled and shocked,” said Boorman in a telephone interview, speaking from Edmonton. In her book, Boorman takes the reader on a thrilling journey of alternate history where a fearsome mysterious enemy isolates a frontier

Public works director enjoys town and people BY TREENA MIELKE

Rick Schmidt is one of those town employees who may receive more than his fair share of recognition, but, unfortunately, more often than not, it’s not when things are going well. Schmidt, who is the director of public works for the Town of Rimbey, loves his job and he loves his town. But he is first to admit that you can’t please everybody all of the time, so it’s best to do what you can do and treat everyone with kindness and respect and remember a smile and a handshake go a long way towards resolving issues for all parties involved. Schmidt began work with the town as a utility operator. During that time, he says he was jack-of-alltrades, doing a little bit of everything that was associated with running the town. Now, 13 years later, he oversees the public works department, handling com-

plaints and dealing with equipment that malfunctions at a moment’s notice and directing staff to be at the right place at the right time. “We are the wheels of the town,” he said with a laugh. “We keep things rolling.” In spite of the complaints that are part of the job, Schmidt said he enjoys dealing with people and doing his best to accommodate their requests. “The town has always been very good to me,” he said. Rimbey is a small town with a big heart. A large percentage of the population is seniors, he said. “Rimbey has its own set of challenges but working in a small town is great. People are more likely to approach you and you can deal with their issues one on one.” While people complain about potholes, snow removal, grass recycling and weeds, he sees the town as a

great place to live and work. And he wants to make it even better. “Beautification is important to Schmidt and he has plans to spend more time ensuring the town gets spruced up for the upcoming summer season. He plans to work on the landscaping around the entrance and exit signs and do his best to make the town more aesthetically pleasing. continued on page 12

GAETZ, Carol Carol’s long days’ journey into night ended on May 13, 2015, 12 days following her 102 birthday, when she passed away in the Rimbey Care Centre. Carol was born May 1, 1913, to Walter and Helen Lynn, in Youngstown, Alberta. The family moved to the Rimbey area in 1928, where Carol completed her schooling and later married Earl Gaetz in 1935. They settled on a farm just north of Rimbey where their two daughters were born. During World War II, Earl joined the RCAF, and Carol and daughters spent the war years moving to various jobs throughout Alberta. In 1946, the family settled in Edmonton. Never a stay- at- home mom, Carol took various jobs, and eventually obtained a business diploma as a comptometer operator. She worked in this field for various companies in Edmonton and Calgary. When Earl retired from the RCAF and became the Fire Chief for DOT Whitehorse, Carol reluctantly joined him. The Native residential schools were being closed during this time and Carol became involved with providing a home and support for many of these youth. Following Earl’s untimely death in 1961, she returned to Edmonton and thus began a new chapter in her life. She completed a Nurse’s Aide course, and worked for the U of A and Charles Campsall hospitals, but her main focus was providing support for the young men who found their way to Edmonton from the North. She also participated in a special project caring for youth with severe antisocial problems. Over time her home in the Norwood community became a refuge for a variety of young people who needed comfort and guidance. Many of these youth were experiencing a variety of problems including run-ins with the criminal justice system, thus Carol became familiar with the courts, the local constables, lawyers, even the inside of a couple of jails. She received recognition for her work from the Province of Alberta, as well as civic and community organizations. At age 92, Carol lost her driver’s license, and decided to retire to the Parkland Manor in Rimbey. It soon became evident that dementia had begun to take its toll and she transferred to the Rimbey Care Centre. Carol was unable to live her last years with the dignity that all persons deserve. Over time she lost all physical capabilities, her mental abilities and eventually, even her speech. Dementia teaches many lessons: patience and tolerance, forgiveness and acceptance, most importantly, don’t forget them. For those who have lost touch with Carol, please take a moment to remember. We extend our gratitude to the staff at the Rimbey Care Centre who lovingly looked after Carol’s every need. It is so important to have trust in the caregivers who are responsible for one so vulnerable. Many thanks, to each of you. Carol was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene and participated with and supported a number of congregations in Edmonton and Rimbey. Carol is survived by her brother, Walter (Alice) Lynn of Rimbey, her daughters, Lois Pawl of Edmonton and Betty Webster of Sylvan Lake, ten grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. A private family service will be held later in Rimbey where Carol’s final resting place will be next to her husband.
