A confession made to police has been allowed as evidence in a trial for a Maple Ridge man who claims he had to resort to murder to save his own life. Madame Justice Gail Dickson ruled this week in New Westminster Supreme Court that the transcript and video of an interview with RCMP in which Adam Arthur Ronald Deboo admits to killing Brandon Howson can be viewed by the jury. However, evidence extracted by an undercover officer who was planted in a jail cell with Deboo will not be allowed. Deboo, 35, was arrested in February 2012, a week after a passerby found Brandon Howson lying face down in a cranberry field at the end of 224th Street, by 144th Avenue. See Trial, p14
School strike again Monday Teachers upset about docked pay before hearing by Neil Corbe tt staff reporter
There are signs of growing frustration in the school system as the labour dispute between teachers and the government grows increasingly bitter. Rotating strikes will continue next week, but will be on Monday in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows
School District rather than Tuesday, as they were the first week of the escalated job action. An angry employee met trustees arriving for the school board meeting at the School District No. 42 office Wednesday night, holding a sign that read, “10 per cent pay cut” and “What didn’t we do?” He also had a piece of tape across his mouth that said, “Locked out.” Phillip Gray, a psychology teacher at Maple Ridge secondary, said he was furious when he was emailed his pay stub on Wednes-
day, and saw the amount that he would be getting on payday. Gray was frustrated at district staff, saying they did not have to cut his cheque by 10 per cent in advance of a Thursday hearing of the Labour Relations Board. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation asked for the hearing, to argue the partial lockout, with its 10-percent pay cut, is illegal. Gray asks “What didn’t we do?” on his sign because, he explained, teachers have not practically been “locked out” of any of their work. The 10-per-cent pay

cut is simply a penalty, he says, as teachers are already giving up a day of pay each week for their rotating strike. His message to the government: “Go ahead and do it – this is not going to get you a contract, and it’s ruining morale in your schools.” Inside the meeting, Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association president George Serra agreed with Gray that the board should have waited. “The LRB is ruling on it tomorrow [Thursday],” Serra pointed out.

Make B.C. Smile is worthwhile
Students at THSS trying to brighten your day
randomly buy customers drinks. The teens are convinced that the effort of Make B.C. Smile is worthwhile. “I think it really makes a difference,” said Tymoschuk. For the students at Thomas Haney, she has no doubt it has been an enlightening exercise. “It gives us such a positive way to connect with our community.” Make B.C. Smile also sends a subtler message to commuters about not being disconnected from the people around them. “People need this in their lives,” asserts Tymoschuk. “People go on with their lives, and ignore the people they pass every day.”

“Honk if you love someone.” If you saw a student on the side of the road holding that sign, would you? More importantly, would it make you smile? “Today is awesome,” or “Don’t be so hard on yourself ” – would those messages, on a placard, brighten your day, just a little bit, for a little while? Those in the leadership class at Thomas Haney secondary think so and have embarked on the Make B.C. Smile campaign. Drivers may have noticed students at Pitt Meadows elementary out displaying their own brands of positive messages along Harris Road on Thursday afternoon, as they have joined the effort. “I really do think it works. Even tiny positive messages can brighten my day,” said Courtney Connor, a Grade 10 student at Samuel Robertson Technical. She is part of the District Student Advisory Council (DSAC) that has also taken up Make B.C. Smile. “The more we get out there, the better community we can build,” said Connor. “We want to make B.C. feel smaller – more like a community.” The organizers have borrowed generously from a student initiative from Washington called “Make D.C. Smile.” Massoud Adibpour first created the signs and eventually a Youtube video titled, “ ” He’s gained some measure of celebrity. The Washington Post called him the “Prince of Positivity,” and “a Bobby McFerrin song come to life.” Local students wanted to tap into

Kirsten Koellmel, in Grade 6 at Pitt Meadows elementary, holds up a sign along Harris Road as part of the Make B.C. Smile campaign on Thursday. that, and so they have brought Adibpour to Maple Ridge, to be the main speaker for the annual DSAC leadership conference today at the Greg Moore Youth Centre. He’ll tell 150 elementary students, future leaders in local schools, about what he started, and how significant it has become. Miranda Tymoschuk, a DSAC leader, has been communicating with him online, and he “Skyped” the THSS leadership class. So, she said, meeting Adibpour at Vancouver International Airport was like welcoming an old friend. The local students made it a big, splashy, positive event. They cre-
ated a ball pit at YVR, and on each ball were written messages like “What’s your dream?” or “If you had lots of money, what would you spend it on.” The idea was to get two people into the ball pit, and have them ask each other a random question. “Arrive strangers, depart friends,” was their pitch line. Tymoschuck said people were quite interested in their ball pit, and about 15 of them got in. “Often people don’t even say “hi” to each other in an airport – they’re all busy,” she said. This week, they’ve taken Adibpour along for some random acts
of kindness, and to talk to kids at local schools. “It’s been fun sharing our ideas with him, and hearing his ideas from D.C.,” said Tymoschuk. On Tuesday, they visited patients and Ridge Meadows Hospital, and brought them flowers. “How much does this cost?” was a common query from patients. They brought along their chalkboard with the heading “What makes you smile,” and let patients write down their thoughts: “Sexy rich man,” and “People and animals,” or “Flowers.” They also went to a coffee place and bought gift cards, to be used to
There is some science to back her up. The Washington Post interviewed a psychologist about Adibpour’s Washington signs, and found he had inadvertently engineered a “positive intervention.” If people choose to react positively to this intervention – a voluntary decision – their mind-set can became more positive throughout their day. “And even though the group’s signs provide only a brief moment of cheer, people shouldn’t write off the good effects,” said the Post, “… scowl at Adibpour and his sign-toting friends and you’ll have to put up with the rest of your miserable day. “ Tymoschuk has heard from schools in Hope and Kelowna that want to be part of Make B.C. Smile. “We’re hoping that as more schools that get involved, it’ll spread across the province.”
Deduction done ahead on job action to be in compliance Strike from front
He added, the board might be creating an administrative headache for itself – it may have to give the money back to teachers. Serra noted that between the rotating strike and partial lockout, teachers have so far been hit with a pay cut that equals 1.4 days lost. School district spokesperson Irena Prochop said the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association instructed school districts to make the deductions before May 30. “We had to implement the deduction on Wednesday so that we were in compliance,”
she said. “If the LRB ruling overturns that deduction decision today, we would reverse it and would deposit that amount into our employees’ bank accounts. This process would start tomorrow [Friday] morning.” Serra noted that teachers have to have their job action approved by the LRB before they occur because education is deemed an essential service. The rotating strikes have been approved by the LRB. Teachers are frustrated that the government is doing what it wants, without first having it approved by the LRB. In the board meeting, trustees disagreed about whether to weigh in on the teacher
negotiations. Trustee Ken Clarkson said other boards, including Victoria, have publicly asked for mediation to begin. He noted school boards have not been consulted by the government in the bargaining process. They were not asked about the decision Clarkson to lock out teachers. “We’re spectators in this current crisis,” said Clarkson.

He wanted to let the public know the board’s position on bargaining. “Otherwise, we’re sitting here like ducks on a log.” Trustee Susan Carr agreed, saying the bargaining impasse is “hurting kids,” and that a mediator should resolve it. She too said boards are “powerless on the sidelines.” Chairman Mike Murray said any discussion about labour issues should not be done in public, whether the board takes a position or not. He was supported in that stance by the rest of the board.

SPOTLIGHT ON: More Items Added to Curbside Recycling in Maple Ridge Do Your Part in Diverting Recyclables! While many communities are seeing reductions in materials picked up as part of the roll out of the Multi Material BC (MMBC) program, Maple Ridge residents can now add NEW items to their curbside recycling. That’s good for the planet and helps our community divert even more of our solid waste from landfills. So the key message is that it’s business as usual with some additions to the list of things that you can put out for collection. The new items include glass, plastics (including the plastic bag collection you have under the sink) and a variety of new cans and cartons. All the details are included in a full page ad that you will find elsewhere in this newspaper. In Maple Ridge the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society has been a leader in the diversion of solid waste from our landfills. The depot located at 10092 236 Street just south
of River Road in Albion also takes your old electronics and you can now drop off that styrofoam collection! We encourage you to go to the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society website to get more detailed information about the many programs that they offer to help reduce waste in our community. Just go to rmrecycling.org and learn how you can take an active role in going green.
ENGAGED: Invest 10 Minutes for Health Is Our Health Care System Important to You? We need your help and a few minutes of your time. One of the things that government organizations need to plan in the delivery of services is information, specifically data. This data used to be available as part of the long form Census gathered by StatsCan, but that information is not available anymore. This void needs to be filled, so that Fraser Health can plan for the delivery of services in our community. As Maple ridge, and the communities around, grow and evolve, the needs for health care delivery and services in our community will change, and we need solid data to support these changes.
51% and Port Coquitlam is at 56%. Please help us spread the word. It’s about our health!
Last year a survey was launched in the Fraser and Coastal health regions to get that critical data to help plan for the future of our health care system. In order for the survey to have relevance, we need to get as many people as possible to invest 10 minutes of their time and provide us with some information. The goal is to get about 1,400 completed surveys in Maple Ridge, and so far we’ve only hit about 47% of the target. We are asking you to invest 10 minutes and go to www.myhealthmycommunity.org/survey and help us reach that 1,400 survey goal. Right now, Pitt Meadows is at about

Each year, from early May until mid-July, we closely monitor the conditions of the Fraser River and the tributaries during the spring run-off known as the ‘Freshet Season.’ The BC River Forecast Centre works closely with communities throughout BC to provide information and modelling on river conditions based on things such as the snowpack, rain conditions, flow rates and the time of year. You may have noticed that the Fraser River flow has increased in the last couple of weeks, and this is a result of the melting snowpack along the Fraser River basin as well as water from rain events flushing through the system. The risks for flooding in the lower Fraser River are predicted to be relatively low for 2014, but that could change if we get an extraordinary fast melt of snow in the interior based on warm weather or intense rain events. We just wanted to let you know that we are currently monitoring all of the dykes in the community and we will provide updates if there is any unexpected spike in the river levels. We would like to remind you that the flow rates are very high this time of year and that you and your family members, including pets, should use extra caution when you are near the water. If you’d like more information go to and click on the Emergency Services button. In the section called Emergency Preparedness you can find information, District Planning and links related to Flooding. Stay safe!

The rotating strikes, which happen locally again on Monday, means that students are missing a day of school each week. “It’s horrible what they’re doing,” said Ings. “It’s the government – we’re in support of the teachers.” Ings said students are also upset about the school budget, and that the grad transitions worker, who helps with career planning and work experience, is be-

Ings has also heard that music and drama programs at the school face cuts, but the school administration said that is inaccurate – no such cuts are being planned. On Tuesday at 2 p.m.. Ings is encouraging students to walk out, in their own demonstration. “It’s a way for kids to speak up,” said Ings. “We want to change what’s happening.”

Parents, upset at the state of education funding, have taken their complaints directly to Victoria. A frustrated Susan Carr and other Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school trustees urged parents to make their voices heard about the issue as they passed a 20142015 budget with more than $5 million in cuts for the second straight year. The politicians had already written letters to the education ministry, with no apparent reaction. Parents responded with rallies outside MLA Marc Dalton’s riding offices in Maple Ridge and Mission. One local rally attracted some 160 sign-toting people. The organizer of that rally was Maple Ridge mom Stacy MacLennan, and she and another

Anti-spam slam No doubt few haven’t been annoyed by receiving spam. We’re not talking about the canned variety, but the endless stream of e-mails advertising everything from Viagra to Rolux (sic), or the $30 million a nice man in Nigeria wants to send you. What is really ludicrous is the federal government’s new anti-spam legislation, which takes effect on July 1. It is difficult to imagine a more trivial nonproblem for the government to concern itself with, let alone how the rules, which require businesses get written or oral consent before they send e-mails or other digital messages to consumers, will put an end to spam. The new regulations address a problem that, by and large, has already been dealt with through technological means; spam filters at the level of both your home computer and your Internet service provider are sophisticated, effective and constantly being updated. This legislation also doesn’t do much to stop the particular flavour of spam email that is a problem: fraudulent or phishing e-mails trying to scam you into revealing your personal information. They’re unlikely to ask your permission, either. On the end user side of the question, there will be some who want to file grievances regardless of how effective their spam filter has been, and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is already saying it won’t be able to handle the expected flood of complaints. So what has the federal government accomplished with its new anti-spam legislation? An increase in bureaucracy, to be sure, but not much else. We would prefer they concentrate on legislation that actually means something. – Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

A little piece of us died with him B
efore I retired, I spent a lot of time as a reporter covering the courts. The usual cases were impaired driving and minor criminal offenses, but I also sat in those courtrooms covering crimes involving violence and Sidewinder death. Sandy Macdougall Too many times I witnessed the drama and emotional trauma inflicted on the families involved and their struggle to somehow find closure following the tragedies that had befallen them. I have seen mothers, fathers, children, brothers and close friends of deceased persons openly weep as they stared through tear-swollen eyes at the accused, some of whom appeared remorseful while others appeared uncaring and callous. Throughout these trials I somehow managed to observe most of the accused persons objectively and dispassionately and made every attempt to treat everyone involved with respect. It now seems so ironic that I am currently attending the trial of a man charged with first-degree murder in the death of our grandson. That dispassionate, objective observation I could once employ when contemplating an accused person has turned to something else, something totally
Q
uestion of the week:
unforgiving and relentless. Our grandson was no angel, but neither is the accused – a man with a reputation for violence. Regardless, no one deserves to die in the violent, gruesome manner in which our grandson’s life was taken. And no mother, father, grandparent or close friend should have to sit through the harangue of a defense counsel characterizing their deceased loved one as a gangster, thug, extortionist or drug dealer and not be able to respond. I know every accused is entitled to the best defense available, but as I sat and listened to the bluntness and disdain of the defense counsel, the admiration and respect I have always had for the legal system somehow began to shrivel and die. The trial of the man charged in our grandson’s death is expected to conclude by the end of June, but, as the Crown counsel so aptly described it, this is not a who-done-it. The confession of the accused will be heard by the jury. His defense rests on a claim that he killed our grandson in self-defense. It matters little whether his defense is successful or fails; he will still be alive and our grandson will still be dead. All of our hopes that our grandson would someday extricate himself from the path he had chosen to follow died that January day in 2012, and a little piece of us died along with him. It’s so pathetic that all the cautions and concerns of family and friends so often

fall on deaf ears of young people who have no concept of their own mortality and the dangers of taking those wrong turns on the road of life. The lure of easy money, expensive cars, big stereos and a misguided sense of the disputable glamour of life on the edge are meaningless when you end up on a cold slab in the morgue while a coroner performs an autopsy on your dead body. Our grandson was involved with some very dark activities, and people, but we also have memories of a big, cheerful, kind and special kind of young man

whom we will forever miss. One of the ironies at this time in my life is that while the trial of the guy charged with murder in the death of our grandson is being held, I will be in Mexico attending the wedding of another grandson. Life can sometimes be a real bitch, but it does go on. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former district councillor.

THE NEWS/letters B.C. Liberals would make Scrooge proud Editor, The News: Re: MLA brings forward welfare clawback, party bus issues (The News, May 28). I would like to offer kudos to our MLA, Doug Bing, for trying to initiate a discussion by members at the Liberal Party convention regarding the disgraceful practice of “clawing back” payments made by parents to augment the meagre incomes of their children. How can the government members look themselves in the mirror when they are not even willing to discuss this issue. Of all the penny-pinching practices of our government, Ebenezer Scrooge would be most proud of this one and how it illustrates the saying “penny-wise and pound-foolish,” holding back assistance to children now, while realizing they will very likely cost society a great deal more in the future. Debacle at Volker Park Editor, The News: Re: Debate over off-leash park heating up (The News, May 28). Seriously, Nancy Patrick? Comparing the noise that school children make to that of dogs in the off-leash park? The kids are only out at intervals between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The dogs can frequent the park from dawn to dusk in varying numbers. I’m aghast at the thought that someone would perpetrate such an attack on a family over their support for the off-leash area, but I sympathize with the neighbours who have to put up with the noise, dust, and apparently pollution from the dogs’ waste products. I, too, have a dog that requires daily exercise. I choose to take him to other locations – Jerry Sulina Park, for one. I don’t worry about him running away because he has been adequately trained – something far too few dog owners do. The result is the Volker Park debacle. Dog parks should be located well away from residences and dog owners should have better control over their animals at all times at any location. Candice Kuitula Maple Ridge

A few suggestions on voting Editor, The News: Re: District starts voting message (The News, May 23). Congratulations on your article identifying the new campaign to try and increase the voter turnout for the November election. Council will spend over $40,000 to try and ‘Get the vote out.’ As described, unfortunately, this year’s campaign is destined to the same dismal results as past ones as it is designed to do the same thing: educate the voter. This is an insult to the voters of Maple Ridge because they do not need educating to vote, as they are already voting – to stay home. With literally thousands of signs stuck into every corner of Maple Ridge, how could anyone not realize an election is going on? To increase voter turnout, the district’s campaign must address the fact that today’s voter is not the same as those in the ’60s. Council seems oblivious to this fact as November 2014 will essentially be iden-
tical to voting days of past decades. I have a couple of suggestions that would address this fact and also give people a reason to vote, and in doing so will increase voter turnout, hopefully by more than 10 per cent. The first is to recognize that people today are extremely busy and going to a polling station is far from the top of their to-do lists. Instead of expecting people to go to a polling station, take a polling station to where the people are already present, doing their weekly grocery shopping. Set up three mobile polls at major shopping centres throughout Maple Ridge – Coopers mall, Valley Fair Mall, and Westgate Mall. Have them open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at which time the ballots could be taken to a nearby polling station to be counted after the 8 p.m. closing time. The second is to include several referendum questions on the ballot. People love to give their opinions and if the questions are the right ones, people will make an effort to vote.
Editor, The News: Re: Teachers will be docked 10% (The News, May 23). As chair of DPAC, I am astounded by the disrespect of our government toward the future of our province, our children. We live in a province that is one of the best places in Canada to live, but we fall desperately short in ensuring that our children’s future is protected. Instead, our government insists on a balanced budget that slashes supports children need to thrive in the education system. This past Tuesday, our educators walked the picket lines to fight for what our children need to learn; keeping class sizes within teachable limits and ensuring the composition of said classrooms is conducive to teaching children in an environment they can thrive in. We need guaranteed levels of specialist teachers (in our district, cuts were made to specialist teachers), and a reasonable wage increase that is respectful of teacher’s skills (the last wage increase was in 2010). Parents and teachers have a consti-
on teachers that will have very significant impact on students. When you see picket lines in your area, I encourage you to stop and stand with the teachers, stand up for education and the future for our children. The teachers and education partners are. My suggestions for possible referendum questions: • Should the incoming council receive a pay raise? • Should the new council be increased to eight councilors if permitted by the Community Charter? • Should the incoming council support an application to exclude the Pelton land from the ALR to permit commercial development? • Should the new council require staff to include an option for an zero per cent tax increase during budget discussions for 2015? 5. Will you support increased fees/ taxes directed to TransLink if no transit improvements are made in Maple Ridge other than a possible BRT to Coquitlam? By making the questions simple, our voting machines will permit easy counting and limit the additional cost. Something definitely has to be done to increase the turnout. The apparent plan will do little if anything to do so. Graham Mowatt Maple Ridge

How moronic Editor, The News: Re: Teachers will be docked 10% (The News, May 23). Christy Clark’s government has locked me out of my school at lunch, saying that I cannot interact with students at this time, in order to justify the government’s 10 per cent reduction in my wage. How moronic is that? Lunch time is my students’ No. 1 choice for tutorial time, and final exams are only two weeks away. Brent Crich Maple Ridge

Council asks for off-leash reprieve by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Maple Ridge council is trying to keep the off-leash dog area in Volker Park open at least until a replacement site has been found. At its Tuesday meeting, council voted to ask the parks commission to stall the intended June 10 closure until another site has been found. “It’s a respectful request of them. They may say no,” said Coun. Cheryl Ashlie, who proposed the resolution. Ashlie cited a staff report that called for a one-year consultation before a decision was made to close the park. “We typically do always allow for those types of processes.” The commission voted to close the park at its April 10 meeting after complaints from neighbours, among them noise. Recreation general manager Kelly Swift said escalating tensions between dog owners who use the park and those who live nearby also prompted the closing. If a new location can be found in six months, why not keep the off-leash area open in the meantime, Ashlie asked. “If not there, where should it be? Where can it be?” If both sides had been at the April 10 commission meeting, members may have voted for a

year’s delay, she said. A report on other possible places for an off-leash park is expected at the commission’s June 12 meeting. Parks and leisure staff had recommended waiting a year before closing the park. Staff had also suggested public input be obtained about alternative sites and that the hours of the park be changed. But the commission voted all those down at its April 10 meeting. “This is the first thorny issue we’ve had like this,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin, who also sits on the commission. He supported the staff ’s suggestions because they would give time to come up with solutions. However, he added, the commission has the right to not fol-
low the staff recommendation. Daykin reiterated his previous point that council must respect the parks and leisure services commission decisions. “I can’t change the commission’s decision.” During Maple Ridge council’s vote on whether to ask for a delay of the closure, Couns. Michael Morden and Al Hogarth excused themselves because they also sat on the commission. Morden said he was uncomfortable voting as a councillor on a policy that was decided by the commission. He said it wasn’t clear whether councillors could do that, so he opted not to vote on the issue. Nancy Patrick, who collected a 1,200-name petition to keep the park, appealed again to council to keep the off-leash area open. “Nobody came and talked to us. All of us would have been there,” at the April meeting when the decision was made to close it. Patrick told council the front window in her home near the dog park was broken twice last weekend. Glass was spread in the off-leash area last year. “As a district, do we kowtow to the bullies?” Three members of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows council each sit on the leisure services commission, along with four members from the school board and six citizens at large.

If you don’t know what actually is a designated bike route, it can be difficult to ride on it. So cycle advocate Jackie Chow wants the District of Maple Ridge to install more signs, so riders know the paths that have been set out for them. “There’s no signage yet so people don’t know where to go,” Chow said during Bike to Work Week, May 26 to June 1. “The cycling plan for the town core is basically some lines on the map that most people don’t know about.” In particular, Chow would like some signs identifying the “bike path to nowhere,” the 655-metre multi-use path on Lougheed Highway, from 216th Street to Laity Street, built last year at a cost of a million dollars. She’d like to see signs indicating where the route leads, along with map of the route. The district hasn’t yet produced a map and put it online for people, she notes. Chow is also inviting people on downtown rides throughout the summer. Chow says the path does lead somewhere and she wants people to realize that. By taking a brief jog south on Laity Street, cyclists can hook on to the bike path on 117th Av-
enue and continue heading west. Chow points out only about $200,000 of the entire project was for the cycle path. The rest of the money was used for installing curbs and gutters, a retaining wall and improving drainage and lighting. With the price tag of a million dollars for such a small project, it makes it difficult to get funding for future cycling. “It was a major project, but the path was only a small part of it.” But municipal engineer Dave Pollock said all of the work was required because the bike path was being installed. BikeBC Program chipped in $488,956 for the path, with the district giving the same. TransLink put in $269,875 towards the project. Maple Ridge allocates $50,000 a year for cycling infrastructure. Chow also said more effort should be made to make cycling easier. “The main purpose of getting us bike routes is to get us out of the way of cars. But at the same time, they should look at how they can make those routes faster for cyclists so you don’t have to stop at every intersection. RCMP were out on the streets Thursday promoting safe cycling. “All parents should ensure their children have a properly fitted bike helmet before they learn to ride a bike,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. or join our

Northumberland site still a problem Neighbours complain about derelict property by Mo ni s ha M a r tin s w reporter
The empty lot that once housed one of Maple Ridge’s most notorious slums has once again become a campsite for drug addicts and the homeless, much to the frustration of neighbours. District of Maple Ridge staff cleaned the North Avenue property Wednesday after receiving repeated complaints about it becoming a dump for everything from tires to tarps. Hours before bylaw staff arrived, John McKenzie, who lives in the neighbourhood, picked up syringes and crack pipes from the grassy knolls where he sees neighbourhood children play. I’ve only been complaining about the “ghetto” for more than 10 years now, he said. “Yes, I’m peeved at having to continually deal with this. The guy yesterday couldn’t fit all of the trash on his truck, so there’s a bit left behind.” The property in question was the site of Northumberland Court, a townhouse complex that was a haven various kinds of illegal activity. Ghalib Rawji purchased the property after the buildings were vacated and planned on redeveloping it, but the district says that

Problems persist at the North Avenue property even though the townhouse complex was demolished in October 2011. idea has been shelved. Rawji was been billed for Wednesday’s cleanup, an annual exercise, according to the district. “It appears that this is a once-ayear problem for us,” said director of bylaws Liz Holitzki. The district issued Rawji cleanup notices under its unsightly premises bylaw in 2012, a year after he purchased the property, and in 2013. “He is a bit slow in cleaning up, but he usually gets it done. However, this time he took too long, which caused the bylaw officer to take action,” Holitzki added. But residents of the neighbourhood point out that the former Northumberland property isn’t
the only one in the area that generates complaints. Another is a lot owned by the district at the end of 224th Street, opposite historic Haney House. The bylaws department said that lot was cleared by parks staff one or two weeks ago, but is on the list for another cleanup. McKenzie and his neighbours welcome the renewed focus and hope the district continues to keep an eye on vacant downtown properties so issues don’t spiral out of control as they have in the past. “It is a council directive that the bylaw enforcement department be proactive in the downtown core so we do not wait for a complaint in order to enforce,” Holitzki said.

No booze on party buses: province Raymond family to meet with minister by Mo ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
The party bus industry received a stern reminder from police and the province last week to keep alcohol off their rolling discos as graduation season approaches. After six years of tirelessly lobbying the province to regulate the burgeoning industry, Julie Raymond and her daughter Danielle believe they are finally being heard. They are set to meet with Transportation Minister Todd Stone on June 11. “Danielle and I no longer feel that we are alone and that people are finally realizing that what we have been saying over the past six years is in fact the truth on how the majority of the industry operates,” said Raymond, whose daughter Shannon died on July 26, 2008 after taking two ecstasy pills and drinking alcohol during a birthday party for a friend on a party bus. She was 16. Shannon’s death was
Party buses are not to have open alcohol on board. the first in a spate of tragedies involving party buses in Metro Vancouver, an industry that’s since expanded to 4,000 vehicles across B.C. In February 2013, 16-year-old Ernest Azoadam died on a party bus in Surrey. Last November, a 17-year-old girl from Abbotsford was dumped at a truck stop and beaten up after a trip on a party bus. Following the May 20 meeting, B.C.’s Passenger Transportation Registrar promised a crackdown on operators found flouting the rules. Operators were also reminded that their advertising cannot feature open containers

of alcohol in a companyoperated vehicle, since drinking onboard – no matter how old you are – is illegal. As well, B.C. liquor stores will be providing an informational brochure on “party buses” to customers, beginning next week. Though pleased with the promise of a focused police blitz, the Raymonds want real rules in place to regulate the industry, similar to legislation passed in California, which requires chaperones and penalizes violators with stiff fines. Even the taxi and limousine industry has asked the province to tighten party bus rules. Right now, anyone with
a general authorization licence can drive a party bus, which is similar to a charter bus. But taxi drivers face tests, a criminal record check and paper work to acquire a special operator’s licence. Raymond believes party buses should be removed from the general license category. “Enforcement is a good first step. However, in order for this industry to really clean up, there needs to be changes to legislation,” said Raymond. The Raymonds are not alone in calling for legislation. On Monday, George Heyman, NDP MLA for Vancouver Fairview, made a private members’ statement, urging the government to stop turning a blind eye to blatant violations. “It’s time to listen to the voices of other jurisdictions that are being more proactive than British Columbia ...” Heyman said in the legislature. “We can do better than simply saying that if there’s open alcohol on a bus, you’re subject to $234 fine and a liquor pour-out. It is time to bring in specific regulations.”

Police allege Deboo killed the 26-year-old on Jan. 31, 2012 on the border of Pitt Meadows, stabbing him a total of 80 times with a machete purchased from Canadian Tire. After dumping Howson’s body, Deboo allegedly drove Howson’s SUV to Stave Lake, where he torched it. He was taken into custody three days later after police caught him speeding near Spence’s Bridge and charged with second-degree murder.
“It’s not a secret what Brandon was up to.” Sandy Macdougall, grandfather
In his opening statements, Crown prosecutor Andrew Blunt said the jury will have to decide whether it’s a case of selfdefence or murder. Testimony this week dealt with timelines, including Deboo’s unsuccessful attempts to purchase
a gun, which were documented via text messages; his acquisition of the machete; his dealings with Howson prior to the killing and the destruction of Howson’s Escalade. The court heard that Deboo and Howson were acquaintances who knew each other through the drug trade. Howson had posted $500 bail for Deboo a week before he was Howson murdered. In his opening remarks, defence lawyer Kevin McCullough painted Howson as a gangster and thug, claiming he had threatened to kill Deboo’s wife and daughter. Howson was known to police as an associate of the Red Scorpions gang and awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges at the time of his death. Sandy Macdougall, Howson’s grandfather, said the family knew Howson was no angel, but seeing him painted as rotten is still devastating. “It’s not a secret what Brandon was up to,” said Macdougall, a former journalist and district councillor.
He added, the suggestion that Deboo was so afraid for his life and couldn’t go to police so had no other alternative but to kill Howson is incredulous. Deboo, too, has a lengthy and violent criminal record. Just before his arrest for Howson’s murder, Deboo was charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one of assault in connection with incidents in Mission on Jan. 12, Jan. 17 and Jan. 18, 2012. He also faces one count of breaching bail and obstructing a peace officer at Spences Bridge on Feb. 3, 2012. Deboo pleaded guilty in 2009 to a charge of inflicting injury on a person and received a $1,000 fine and a year-long recognizance. He was also charged with assault in 2004 for an incident in Squamish. He pleaded guilty and received a $500 fine and year-long peace bond. Deboo is expected to take the stand in his defence once the trial resumes next week.

Battle over moving Whonnock school Looki ng Bac k by Fred Braches
F
ifteen years ago, in 1999, the Whonnock and Ruskin elementary schools consolidated into a new building on 112th Avenue. That move would have amused the pioneers of north Whonnock who, about a century earlier, almost succeeded in moving the school there from the shore of the Fraser River. The history of Whonnock elementary starts in 1885 with a small one-room school at “the front” of Whonnock, serving mainly the children of settlers living close to the Fraser River, north and south. The school district also included the backlands of north Whonnock and the Ruskin area, but the miles-long trek to the school and back home was too much for regular school attendance by these children, so they did not get the schooling they needed. In 1893, settlers south of the Fraser opened a school of their own: the Glen Valley school.
The Whonnock settlers living at the Fraser River realized that, to keep their school, they needed the children of the settlers living in the interior, while those in the interior saw a chance to move the existing Whonnock riverside school closer to their farms. To make that happen, they presented, in May 1893, two different petitions, dated a day apart, to the superintendent of education in Victoria. Some pragmatic settlers signed both petitions. The first petition requested the creation of a new school district, including Webster’s Corners, and north Whonnock. This school district would have been roughly the area north of 104th Avenue between 256th Street and Whonnock Creek. The school would be built on land near Kanaka Creek on 112th Avenue. The other petitioners wanted to move the school from the shore of the Fraser to 104th Ave. and 276th Street, roughly halfway between the river than 112th Ave. Moving the school
to 104th seemed to be a forgone conclusion when a special school meeting was called for June 22, 1894, to formally decide on the move of the school. However, the Norwegian fishermen from 272nd St. and 112th unexpectedly turned up at the meeting and, with their help, the “north” managed to force and win a surprise vote to move the school to 112th rather than to 104th. Perhaps the Norwegians came home for the vote, but it is also plausible that in the immediate aftermath of the big flood of 1894, they had not left yet to go fishing and were, thus, able to participate in the vote. Informing the superintendent of education in Victoria of the results of the meet-

ing, Noble Oliver, secretary of the school board, asked for “compassion” and not to move the school to a place “... where it will do duty only to a few Norwegian settlers.” The superintendent did nothing to change the status quo, and for many more years the Whonnock schoolhouse remained where it was: at the front between the railway tracks and the Fraser River. Meanwhile, in the years immediately following the meeting, families with children living in north Whonnock, including the Norwegians, relocated to properties closer to the river and the school.

headroom and some room to stretch out either piloting or co-piloting the Micra. Under hard acceleration, primarily from the 4-speed automatic, the Micra is quite vocal. You can really hear the engine noise intrude the cabin. It’s not a performance machine like the Nissan GT-R, where you want to hear as much ruckus as you can. However, when cruising at highway speeds – without the lead foot acceleration – my driving partner and I noticed how quiet the cabin is. Wind noise is kept at bay and it’s serene. Furthermore, it was an incredibly blustery day when we took these pint-sized four-doors out. Needless to say, you could feel the swagger of the car at highway speeds. But in its defense, larger vehicles felt the wrath of Mother Nature’s blow, too.
While very affordable, the Micra isn’t “cheap” in execution. Even the knobs on the roll down windows have a soft touch to them. And there are metallic accents to break up the otherwise bland black interior. I certainly wasn’t disappointed when captaining the Micra. Even though that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it’s not. As far as small cars go, it’s functional, funky and has great value. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that gets you from point A to B – minus all the options – or said vehicle with a few extras, the 2015 Micra might be the car for you. Summed up, the Micra is affordable transportation with amiable drivability, an easy-on-the eyes interior and overall a bubbly personality. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Because showing off your car in the garage isn’t as much fun!
Ready to tow a trailer C
amping season is almost upon us and it will soon be time to take that trailer out for some fun times. But is it fun for the driver? Towing a trailer may be one of the most stressful driving situations for many truck owners. For one thing, it is not easy to maneuverer around corners and change lanes with that extra length behind your truck. Backing up also can be challenging and towing up a steep hill can be rough on your truck. Whether you tow a boat, car, snowmobiles, or motorcycles, custom truck accessories can make towing less nerve-wracking. • Don’t tow too much weight: Pulling too much weight can be very dangerous. Check your owner’s manual to find your vehicle’s towing capacity, including the maximum gross trailer weight and tongue weight it can handle. Tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. In most cases, it is about 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight. Tongue weight of up to 300 pounds
can be measured on a household scale by resting the trailer coupler on the scale and placing the scale on a box so that the coupler is at its normal towing height. The trailer must be fully loaded and level. • Use the right hitch and other equipment: Just as each vehicle has a maximum towing capacity, so too does each trailer hitch, hitch ball, ball mount and safety chain. To tow safely, you need to make sure every component you use is ready to handle the weight of your fully loaded trailer. Remember, your towing capacity is equal to the capacity of the weakest link in the system. •Choosing a trailer hitch: All trailer hitches feature a class rating, as well as a weight rating, so be sure the hitch can accommodate the loaded trailer. For instance, Reese Class 2 ($159) hitches have a maximum rated capacity of 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Class IV ($175) receiver-style hitches have a maximum capacity of 1,200 pounds tongue weight and 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight.

If you need more towing capacity than the traditional receiver-style weight distributing hitch, then you need to step up to a fifth-wheel or goose-neck hitch. Prices start at $650. • Choosing a hitch ball: If you have a drawbar style hitch, the hitch ball usually is built right in. But if you have a receiver-style hitch, you’ll need to choose your own hitch ball. Like vehicles and trailer hitches, hitch balls also are assigned a maximum tongue weight and gross trailer weight rating. PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until June 2, 2014. properly: Rule of thumb is roughly two-thirds (60 to 66 per cent) of the gross load weight should be positioned toward the front half of the trailer. Place large or heavy objects on the trailer first. Tie these objects down securely and from several angles to ensure they do not shift. Pack remaining items in a manner that maintains balance of the trailer. Once the trailer is loaded, double-check the positioning and stability of the cargo. Better safe than sorry.
Hitch balls are made from a variety of materials, and some are available in a choice of finishes, including chrome. They cost is $12 to $14. The hitch ball diameter must be the same diameter as the trailer coupler. The shank diameter of the hitch ball should be the same as the hole diameter in the ball mount. The shank length should be long enough to allow at least two threads to be visible when the hitch ball is installed and the nut completely tightened. • Load your trailer

Forge Properties’ Royce features West Coast-style architecture, spacious decks and terraces, gourmet kitchens and luxurious bathrooms. Perfectly situated in White Rock, Royce is close to shopping, dining and recreation opportunities.
Gorgeous views at Forge Properties’ Royce By Kerry Vital
Inspired by White Rock’s stunning scenery, Forge Properties’ Royce is an elegant addition to the neighbourhood, with plenty of curb appeal as it moves into the final cladding stage. Offering spacious homes and a prime location, Royce has proven incredibly popular. “We like to think of it as a true White Rock landmark,” says project marketing manager Brandon Trent. “It’s a one-of-a-kind building with West Coast architecture featuring a blend of modern and natural materials, including B.C. timber posts.” The development takes full advantage of the location. “The building is designed to cascade towards the ocean and maximize stunning ocean views over top of a lush landscaped courtyard,” Trent says. Each home has an expansive terrace or
patio, affording beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean or over the courtyard. Inside, oversized windows and nine-foot ceilings in the main living areas add to the sense of spaciousness. Gourmet kitchens feature floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and distinctive quartz countertops, complemented by an integral Carrera marble backsplash. The space is lit by under-cabinet task lighting, pot lights and chic pendants over the kitchen island. “These kitchens live like a single-family home,” says Trent. The luxurious bathrooms are spa-like and relaxing, with quartz countertops, recessed pot lighting and large-format porcelain tile with mosaic-style polished marble accents. The ensuite features a walk-in shower, separate soaker tub (most homes) with largeformat marble tile flooring with a mosaic herringbone-style marble accent. Homeowners at Royce will have access to The Royce Club, an amenities space with a fireside lounge with kitchen area and library, and a fully equipped fitness centre with yoga studio. Venturing off the property you’ll find everything you need, from shopping and dining to leisure and recreation opportunities.
Combined with the gorgeous homes, Royce has something for everyone. “With so many great floorplans to choose from, both singles and couples can find a home at the right size to fit their lifestyle with a true White Rock address,” says Trent. Royce was the recipient of four Georgie Awards earlier this year, which honour the best in British Columbia’s residential
construction industry. Homes at Royce start at $299,900. For more information, visit www.royceliving.com, call 604-538-8028 or visit the Presentation Gallery at 14855 Thrift Avenue, open daily between 12 and 5 p.m.

incursions. If you notice any damaged areas of the building that are a result of moisture, it’s best to fix and seal these as ants, particularly house-munching carpenter ants, love such spots. If you’re worried about odorous or sugar ants coming into the house, the best way to prevent that from happening is to make sure all sugary foods are stored properly, and that all spills are wiped up immediately.
By Robert Prince
pring and summer are wonderful times of the year to welcome guests to your home. Unfortunately, they’re also the time of the year when some unwanted guests like to visit as well.
When it comes to summer visitors, nobody wants wasps and ants dropping in. There’s nothing like a wasp nest to ruin a good barbecue on the back deck, and nothing like ants – particularly carpenter ants – to ruin that deck, or your house in general. Josh Lower of Aggressive Pest Control confirms that ants and wasps are the two main reasons he stays so busy during the spring and summer months. It’s this time of the year when wasps start building their nests, and when ants starting leaving their nests looking for food and new places to build homes. “We’re definitely kept busy during the summer with wasps and ants,” says Lowe, who notes that he’s already getting lots of wasp calls, even though such calls don’t usually start coming until later in June. “We tend to get lots of ant calls right now because they’re busy, but we’ve also been getting lots of wasp calls already. I think it’s probably because we didn’t get much of a freeze this winter.” If you’ve noticed ants or wasps, Lowe says you need to act on them before they become a bigger problem. For wasps, he says
“You can’t just kill a few ants ... you need to destroy the whole nest or they’ll just keep coming.” Josh Lowe, Aggressive Pest Control
Homeowners can tackle small nests themselves if they’re confident enough.
homeowners can tackle small nests themselves if they’re confident enough. But he cautions that if you know you’re allergic or are worried you might be allergic to a wasp bite, or if the nest is bigger than a few inches across, you might want to call an expert and not take any chances. With ants, Lowe recommends going straight to an expert who knows how to track them, and how to destroy the nests.
“You can’t just kill a few ants … you need to destroy the whole nest or they’ll just keep coming,” he says. In order to kill the nest, it’s best to use the professional grade insecticides available only to licensed pest control experts. Lowe says the ant baits available off the shelf in retail outlets really aren’t that effective at taking out possibly tens of thousands of ants in a nest. To do the job right, he says the
ants have to be tracked to their nest, then the right chemicals must be used to take out the whole nest. The best way to tackle ants or wasps from a homeowner’s perspective, says Lowe, is to prevent them from getting access to your home in the first place. Therefore, sealing any entry points – small holes, cracks in the concrete, gaps in the siding or soffits, and so on – is the surest ways to avoid ant or wasp
Outside of the house, ants love rotten stumps and woodpiles, in particular, so removing such spots from near the house will help reduce the likelihood of ants building secondary nests in your home. With wasps, Lowe recommends wasp traps set away from the back deck or barbecue area. By putting traps – homemade or store bought – at a distance, the wasps are less likely to home in on your delicious, expensive steak. Wasps and ants are mostly a nuisance unless you’re allergic to the former, or unless the latter are carpenter ants. Nobody really wants them around, so Lowe says it pays to be vigilant, and to take some preventative measures.

Lisek fourth at provincials
Burrards’ take first loss of season
staff reporter
Monique Lisek finished in fourth place at the provincial championships of heptathlon in Abbotsford last week, but some scores there have her coach optimistic about the main track and field events which are under way. Last year Lisek scored 3,673 points, this year 4,288 points, which is a good improvement, said coach Ken Elphick, noting that the score would have earned her a silver last year. He said the weather on the first day was horrible and many of the athletes under-performed in
WLA team back in action Sunday against the Salmonbellies Last year’s WLA regular season champs weren’t going to get kicked around forever. The Langley Thunder were 0-3 to start this season, and had just been embarrassed 15-3 by the Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday. But they showed some pride in getting revenge on the Burrards on Wednesday night at the Langley Events Centre, getting an 11-7 victory. It was the first loss of the new season for the Burrards, who are 2-1 on the campaign under new coach Chris Gill. Big Ben McIntosh, back in the lineup, had two goals and two assists, and led the team with 12 shots on goal. Tanner Goodwin also a four-point night, with a goal and three assists. Andrew Murphy had two goals and an assist, Jarrett Davis a goal and two assists, and the other scorer was Patrick O’Meara. Thunder keeper Brodie MacDonald stopped 39 shots as Maple Ridge out-shot Langley 46-32. Chris Levis was back in net for the Burrards, and gave up 11 goals on 32 shots. Both teams were deadly on the powerplay with four goals apiece. The Burrards are back in action on Sunday night, at 6:45 p.m., at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge, and will take on the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

their events. Lisek’s time in the 100m hurdles was a second slower than her Toronto time, and her high jump and shot put were also below her best times/distances. She finished the day in fifth. Day two went better. She won the 800m running the fastest time in the province this year. She ran 2:14, which is three seconds faster than any athlete who is entered in this weekend’s B.C. championships, said Elphick. She also had a good long jump and a better javelin than last year. However, it just wasn’t enough to medal against some tough competition.
Two Maple Ridge softball players took honours after their U.S. college campaign with the Seward County Lady Saints. Leading the pack for the Lady Saints on the AllConference/All-Region teams was sophomore first baseman Becky Allen. She was not only was named to the first team, but was also the league’s Most Valuable Player. Allen was nothing short of spectacular for the Lady Saints, as the team leader in batting average (.443), doubles (26), home runs (9), and RBIs (68). Allen’s 26 doubles led all players in
the Jayhawk West conference, as did her 68 RBIs. Her 26 doubles were also good for second nationally and tied the Seward County all-time record for doubles in a season. Sophomore outfielder Andrea Sitter was a sparkplug for Seward both offensively and defensively, starting all 60 games as the centerfielder. She was second on the team with a .436 average and led the Lady Saints in both hits with 96 and stolen bases with 38. The impressive hits and steal numbers were the second most in a single season ever at the school.

Everything’s riding on your ankles Injuries common, and most are sports-related
I
njuries to the ankle joint are quite common, estimated at about 25,000 each day in ankle sprains alone, half of which are sports-related. This is not surprising considering all your body weight is being supported by a relatively small joint between your foot and shin which sometimes is made more precarious by wearing high heels or thick soled shoes. And even though ankle injuries are fairly common they can be quite debilitating and should be taken seriously and investigated since fractures can occur. Twisting or ‘going over’ on your ankle usually occurs when you step on an uneven surface, like a rock or the edge of the pavement, or when you are moving laterally such as playing soccer or basketball and the muscles on the outside of the ankle fatigue and are not strong enough to hold the ankle in place. Most often the ligaments are stretched resulting in swelling and pain. The ankle proper is made up of three bones: the tibia (shin bone), the fibula (splint bone) and the talus. OBITUARIES LACKEY, Craig Ernest-James December 22, 1974 May 24th, 2014
God wanders around his garden to see that all is right, He does this little ritual every single night. He then takes the freshest flowers and turns them into stars, then sprinkles them across the sky on this world of ours. Look up to the sky tonight and find the brightest star, Someone’s smiling down on you to tell you where they are.
Love always, Audrey, Garry, Darlene (Mike), grandsons Clint (Laura), Derreck (Christine), Jordan & Dallas, sister Margaret and brother-in-law Dale. We look for you every night great grandpa, before we go to bed. Hugs & Kisses great grandchildren Brooke, Peyton, Jaylyn & Michael.
It is with much sadness that we say goodbye to our Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend. Craig was born in Richmond, BC, spent his childhood in Tsawwassen and had lived for the last 12 years in Maple Ridge. He is survived by Father Brian (Betty), Brother Kevin (Deanna), Nephew Joel, Niece Charlotte and many loved Aunts, Uncles and Cousins from both the Lackey and Hoff families. He was predeceased by his mother Lorna in 1997. We would like to offer a special thank you to Mike and Sheri Prante for their unwavering support of Craig over the many years. A Celebration of life will take place on Saturday May 31st from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. All friends and family are welcome at Kevin & Deanna’s, 11087 236A St, Maple Ridge, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mood Disorders Association of BC. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca
JAHENY, Joshua It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our son Joshua Riggs “Big Rigg” Jaheny. Josh came into the world in the same way he left it; in his Pitt Meadows home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 5th, 1990 and passed away May 24th, 2014 at the age of twenty-three. Josh went through life in a way most people can only dream of. He lived fully, loved fiercely, laughed loudly, played competitively and above all else brought joy to those around him. He is survived by his devoted parents Paul and Tammie, his closest friend & older brother Tyson and their beloved family pet, Soda. He also leaves behind a large extended family of Grandparents Isabelle, Chloe (Ron), Ken (Linda), Gary (Nilda), as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and a multitude of close & life-long friends. We would like to thank all of the paramedics, first - responders and our life-long friend and neighbour Kent Stone for all their efforts that night.
Dale finally found the fishing spot to beat them all. His loving wife Eleanor, his sons Jay and Darren community. Your classifieds. wished him best of luck and hopes he enjoys tossing the lure alongside his beloved son Kirk. His brother Kelvin, his grandchildren Shandi, Matthew, Jessie, Jacob, Jason, and great grandson Kallen, his many relatives and his numerous friends also wish him a fond farewell. His best pal Kenny, a ‘brudda from another mudda’ and a true friend to the end, helped rig Dale’s gear. Dale finally obtained his pilot’s licence and is winging his way into the sunset. A celebration of Dale’s adventures, tales, humour, woes and passions will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014, 1-5 pm, at the Hammond Community Centre, 20601 Westfield St., Hammond. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kidney Foundation can be made.

A public viewing will be held at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel & Crematorium on Friday, June 6th 2014. Those who wish to say goodbye can come by anytime between 2:00-6:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will then be held on Tuesday, June 10th 2014 at 2:00 pm at Maple Ridge Baptist Church. In true Josh tradition, we ask that you come as you are and that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Josh’s name to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca

Collie Doodle Puppies (Collie x Poodle) Born Feb 26. Mom is a Rough Collie (45 lbs) and Dad is a small Standard Poodle (50 lbs). Both have health clearances (eyes, hips, elbows). 2 very curly black females avail. We have bred this litter special to create the perfect family companion (intelligent, gentle, easy to train, always willing to please, happy indoors and outdoors, good with children and animals, low to no shed). These puppies will not need a heavy hand to train. They are sweet, kind and sensitive puppies. They will be very similar in looks and in nature to the Golden Doodle only smaller, calmer and will mature sooner. We are a 4H (agility, obedience, showmanship) family and our dogs are a part of our home and life and we wish the same for our puppies. Please consider the time and commitment needed to raise a dog and you will have our support and guidance for life. Pups will have shots and deworming. Reduced to $850. 604820-4827
