Report provides bad news about sewer stench ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com There’s good news and bad news in the latest city report on the sewer smell issue.

Well, mostly bad news.

The good news is that work to install an odour scrubber in the headworks building is well underway and expected to finish soon.

That should mean there will be less smell coming from the building.

The bad news – and it’s really bad if you live in Southside – is that the current odour

problems aren’t only coming from the headworks building, they’re coming from the lagoons themselves.

A report to council by Mike Thomas, the city’s engineering director, says the stench coming from the sewage treatment plant right now is likely the result of the warm weather that changed conditions in the lagoons at the sewage treatment plant.

Public works staff has taken steps to alleviate the problem, but the smell has continued. They’ve increased aeration of the first lagoon, they’ve pumped effluent

from the second lagoon into the first one, they’ve held the sewage in the first lagoon for longer to give it more time to digest, and they’ve added sodium nitrate to oxygenate the lagoon. “These protocols have seen an apparent improvement in the health of the pond, however as temperatures have continued to increase, the odour has continued,” writes Thomas.

The city is also looking at the sewage mix to see if people are dumping things into the system that they’re not allowed to, like chemicals, septic waste, oils, greases, and

high and low pH liquids.

They are also looking at recommendations made by Stephen Horsman, an engineer with AECOM, the firm that initially studied the source of the odour in 2013.

In his July 2013 study of the smell, Horsman attributed the odour to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) caused by the treatment process.

The highest concentrations of H2S were in the headworks building, where it topped out at 13.3 parts per million. Readings see Sewer, page 11

Maria Frasca's tough, resilient immigrant life

Special to the Review Maria Frasca’s life has not been an easy one. She immigrated long before global communication was easily and cheaply accessible. She has lost family and friends, but she remains a stoic fixture in the Italian community of Revelstoke. Maria is also my neighbour and one of the bravest people I know.

“I came here in 1958. The first two years were in Albert Canyon,” Maria says. “It was very lonely, I was depressed.”

Maria was a beautiful 18-year-old. She had recently married Dominic Frasca after a six month courtship in Avelilino, Italy. Moving from her home, Maria left all her family and friends behind. Dominic, who came to Canada in 1951, had worked his way around the province of B.C. in a welding gang that had set up shop in Albert Canyon.

“Everyone in Canada had a phone in their house,” Maria says of the difficulty of being away from her close knit family. “But in Italy, people didn't. There were only a couple phones, maybe at the doctor’s or lawyer’s or priest’s.”

Two years later, the couple moved to Revelstoke.

“Revelstoke was better. I lived on Second Street. My neighbour had also come from Italy and we became friends.”

Many years later, the two remain close friends and neighbours.

It took Maria fifteen years to make it back to Italy to visit for the first time, bringing along her husband and four children. When asked if she ever wanted to move back, Maria shrugged. “After your parents die, it's not your home anymore. Here is home.”

Maria does want to make another trip back to visit her sister, but she is first hoping to have cataract surgery.

“Revelstoke used to be full of Italians, in the 80's and 90's especially, but now they're mostly dead,” Maria says bluntly.

Maria shows me her beautiful home and her Catholic roots shine through as images of the crucifixion and the virgin Mary adorn the walls, along with photographs of her beautiful family.

There are pictures of her two surviving children, a son in Vancouver, and her daughter in Revelstoke, and their families. There are also images of the two children Maria lost, and their families.

“Cancer, both of them,” she says sadly. “My son Tony was a train engineer and my daughter Paula had two young children. I've lost two of my nephews as well, and my husband.”

Dominic suffered a stroke a decade ago, and after struggling on for several years, a year ago he passed away. Maria works in her garden, a large affair boasting endless greens, tomatoes and dahlia flowers, for him.

“He loved the garden. It was his passion. After his stroke, I carried it on. But he lost interest in it, and for me now, it is something to do and pass the time.”

Maria tells me of my own yard and where once, long before my family moved in, there was a vegetable garden, now long since given over to grass.

“My life, it has been a hard life,” Maria explains. “My life was the happiest when the kids were young and at home.

Before Dominic was sick,” Maria takes a breath. “But I look after my family. I have friends all over, good friends of a long time. I mind my own business, I'm honest and no gossip.”

Maria is generous and strong. Her life has been full of adventure, love and heartbreak. There is something to be said about having such an inspiring individual close by. We should all be so lucky.

Environment groups petitioning for new provincial park JAKE SHERMAN

Special to the Review With mountain caribou populations in the Selkirks in decline, a Kootenay environmental group is pressing a petition to establish a new provincial park to help protect the endangered animal.

Last Wednesday, the North Columbia Environmental Society hosted Craig Pettit of the Valhalla Wilderness Society, who presented a proposal to develop a new wildlife preserve in the Selkirk Mountains.

Its aim is to protect the dwindling regional mountain caribou population.

Speaking to a group of 18 at the community centre, the Valhalla Wilderness Society circulated a petition to permanently protect 25,000 hectares of land that borders Glacier National Park. The proposed park would link Goat Range Provincial Park in the west to the Bugaboos in the east, and protect the last remnants of interior wetland rainforest. The proposal would also encompass four rivers, including 17 kilometres of the Incomappleux River, and its tributary, Battlebrook Creek.

Called the Selkirk Mountain Caribou Park, the group’s goal is to help preserve the livelihoods of 44 mountain caribou that inhabit the region, as well as trout spawning grounds and grizzly bear habitat.

Globally, only 1,356 mountain caribou still exist, with 98 per cent of them living in the B.C. interior.

Half of the proposed area has already been protected from logging, but the Valhalla Wilderness Society believes that is not enough. Most of the currently protected territory is in the alpine. Comprised of

steep mountain faces and glacial terrain, it is not in the economic interests of logging companies to pursue. This is a political move on the part of the government who is trying to appease both environmentalists and the forestry sector, said Pettit.

The Valhalla Wilderness Society is certain a Class A park is necessary to ensure the survival of the local mountain caribou population, whose diet is comprised of lichen that grows at elevations below the tree-line.

“These old cedar hemlock forests are some of the most endangered in the world,” said Petitt. “In terms of species loss, our biggest problem is habitat destruction, if we destroy habitat, we will lose the species who call it home. This is the situation we are facing with our mountain caribou; the majority of them are declining. In seven years, our goal was to stabilize this population and halt its decline: we’re in year seven — that hasn’t happened.”

In the effort to preserve the Selkirk interior wetland rainforest, the Valhalla Wilderness Society has enlisted scientists from a number of interdisciplinary backgrounds. Together, they have discovered a level of biodiversity among the lichen and mushroom population that they never expected. Among their discoveries are three species of lichen new to British Columbia, another three new to North America, and seven species new to science. One species of mushroom new to science has also been discovered.

Sculpture chosen for new public art project ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com An artist who's already made his mark in Revelstoke has been chosen for a new public art project.

John McKinnon, who created the grizzly bear sculptures that greet drivers as they enter town on Victoria Road, has been chosen by the city's public art committee to create a new work that will go outside the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre.

His sculpture Blowing in the Wind will be "composed of several hundred leaves that dip down and then rise up to create a gyre as leaves quite often do when picked up by the wind in the fall," according to a description accompanying his proposal.

"My motive is to create an iconic symbol that represents perpetuation, continuity and growth," he wrote.

The sculpture will be crafted out of bronze and will be three metres high, plus the height of a concrete base. $50,000 was allocated from the Resort Municipality Infrastructure Program to pay for the sculpture.

The sculpture will be part of the extensive exterior renovations taking place at the RVAC that include new gardens and more.

McKinnon, who lives in Nelson, has created a number of public art works in communities across Canada, including Revelstoke's iconic grizzly bears.

Council still needs to approve the project, however that is likely a formality after its recommendation by the public arts committee.

No new land-use plan for Macpherson, minister says ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com There won't be a new land-use plan or a moratorium on logging on Mount Macpherson, says Steve Thomson, the Minister of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations.

I spoke to Thomson Monday morning after reading his response to a request by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District asking for more public consultation on logging Macpherson. (You can read the letter on our website.)

In his letter, Thomson expressed support for the land-use plans and consultation processes in place. The letter made no mention of the online petition that asked for a moratorium on logging and a new land-use plan.

It also made no mention of a recent request by Revelstoke city council to develop a new land-use plan for Mount Macpherson.

Here is the transcript of my interview with Thomson.

Alex Cooper: What kind of discussions have you had regarding the Macpherson logging issue?

Minister Steve Thomson: "First of all I appreciate the concerns of council and local residents.

People have brought those concerns forward to the ministry. I've had discussions with local government. I've had discussions with the local MLA on this issue. I'm certainly aware of the concerns and issues that are being raised."

Is there any movement within the ministry of reopening land-use plan?

"We believe there's been a robust consultation process on this in terms of the concerns. Timber Sales (BCTS) have met with the community.

They've had the City of Revelstoke stakeholder meetings. They've got a representative in those stakeholder meetings. They've met with the clubs, providing community presentations. There's going to be on-site meetings with the stakeholders in the fall to review the development. Referral no-

tices have gone out.

"We believe there's a robust process in place that is working to address the concerns and under no circumstances will the cross-country ski and mountain bike trails be affected by the proposed development other than Minister Steve Thomson. some alterations to ~ BC government photo the visual landscape.

"I know that BCTS has committed to continue to work with the stakeholders to maintain and enhance the existing trails. Again, work very closely with the cycling club and the ski club."

There was an online petition asking for a moratorium on logging until a new land-use plan is developed that got well over 1,000 signatures. Is it being considered?

"This area is part of the working forest. It's been logged previously. We understand the concerns and that's why BCTS is going through a very rigorous consultation process and there will be, as I said, on-site meetings in the fall to review development to date, with harvesting plans finalized in the fall. The intent is to issue timber sales opportunities in 2016, but again lots of consultation will take place before then."

"It is part of the working forest.

We need to find those opportunities but we need to do them in a way that doesn't negatively impact the operations. That's why we said the crosscountry ski, the mountain bike trails won't be affected by the proposed development other than alterations

to the visual landscape. We think that with continued engagement and continued recognition of the concerns that we can provide both the economic opportunity and continue to ensure the recreation values are maintained."

The Revelstoke Higher Level Plan was created in the late-90s. Given the development of Revelstoke as a resort community and the development of the Macpherson area as a recreation zone since then, would it not be appropriate to update the land-use plan?

Nickelodeon Museum moving on ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com The big move is well underway at the Revelstoke Nickelodeon museum.

Leslie and David Evans have packed up their impressive collection of old time music machines and other devices, and are bringing it to their new home in Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island, ending 10 years of operating Revelstoke's most unique attraction, if not one of the most original in Canada.

"We're semi-retiring, is the idea," said David on the phone from their new home.

"Running a gift shop in a high street location isn't what we want to be doing in our 80s and 90s."

The Evans came to Revelstoke about 10 years ago, when they purchased the historic McKinnon building on First Street and moved their huge collection of mechanical musical instruments here from England.

It took five shipping crates to bring over the collection, including an 18th century barrel organ, a small Dutch street organ, musical pocket watches, magic lanterns, player pianos, music boxes, gramophones, juke boxes, radios, various rare instruments, and a 650-piece pipe organ.

"The smallest is the musical pocket watch and the largest is the pipe organ," said David.

All told, the collection consists of some 600 items, and it's all going with them to Cowichan Bay, where they'll set it up in their home and give tours by appointment.

The Nickelodeon Museum attracted about 2,000 visitors every year and didn't cover its costs. David also did watch repair.

"We met some wonderful people and we had a great time there and that's what it's all about," he said.

When the Evanses moved to town, he helped them renovate the McKinnon building and set up the museum.

They also started up the Bygone Era Entertainment Society together. The group has hosted classic movie nights, old-time dances, and magic lantern shows — the latter being an original form of motion picture where slides would be manipulated to tell a story.

A decade later, McCartney was helping them move out, taking on the demanding job of helping them pack everything. It hasn't been an easy task — on top of all the museum pieces are hundreds of boxes filled with historical curiosities.

"We will truly miss them," said McCartney. "It's a loss for the town."

New youth play looks at absurdity of celebrity obsession ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com A group of girls decide they want to be celebrities, so they choose the easiest path to that goal — they break up with their boyfriends and start dating celebrities.

Not to be outdone, the boys start up their own fake boy band, complete with a hit single. The girls want to win them back but what happens when they find out the boys' band is a ruse?

That's the general plot to Totally Over You, the new play being put on by Revelstoke's youth theatre troupe Flying Arrow Productions.

"It's about how everyone wants to be a celebrity," said Jade-Lyn Harder, who plays Sinita, one of the celebrity-obsessed girls, and is also doing the hair for the play.

"These girls show how obsessed they are with wanting to be famous and wanting everyone to love them. The guys show how ridiculous the girls are."

Flying Arrow Productions is the company of Anita Hallewas, a veteran theatre director, who started the group as a way of engaging youth with all aspects of theatre production.

Hallewas serves as artistic director, acting as mentor and teacher to the youth. Sarah Harper is the technical director, teaching youth skills like lighting and sound design.

Bex Reid-Parkin is the production manager.

The bulk of the work is done by the kids.

"The whole premise of the project is the youth are mentored in production skills," said Hallewas.

I caught part of a rough rehearsal where part of the 23-member cast and crew was

missing because they were off on a band trip.

Some just act, others are involved in the production side, while a few do double-duty. Hailey Christie-Hoyle is the principal director and she is being helped out by Hanna Busch and Riley Olson. Alice Dunkerson is in charge of production design — everything from the costumes to the posters.

Other youth are in charge of sound and lighting.

"It's a lot of fun doing out of school plays because you have lots of responsibility and it feels more real," said Roman Beruschi, who plays Dan, one of the members of the boy band.

The play doesn't require a set, but it does feature lots of technical sound and lighting work. One scene, where the boys play their hit song (called Totally Over You), requires

fancy lighting, lots of sound cues and a video playing behind them. "We're having laser and smoke machines, so that's exciting for the technical team," said Hallewas.

This is the second production being put on by Flying Arrow. Their last one, Heritage, was a big hit in the fall and about half the youth taking part in Totally Over You were involved in Heritage.

"What I really enjoyed seeing is the kids who were in Heritage are bringing a level of professionalism we're striving for," said Hallewas. "Our aim is to run a professionalquality show, but also teach them how a professional show runs."

Totally Over You will be performed at the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre from May 28–30 at 7 p.m., and May 31 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and children and $10 for adults.

A new headliner has been announced for Revelstoke's new Axis Mundi Festival in September.

Walk Off the Earth, who gained fame for a music video showing all five members playing one guitar, will be headlining the festival at Revelstoke Mountain Resort on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Walk Off the Earth is best known for their cover of Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know, who's video has received more than 165 million views on YouTube.

The Canadian alternative pop group consists of Sarah Blackwood, Gianni Luminati, Ryan Marshall, Mike Taylor and Joel Cassady. Together they play a mix of folk, rock, ska and reggae, performing originals and creative covers.

Their debut album R.E.V.O. was released in 2013 and the band is set to release the follow-up Sing it All Away on June 16 on Columbia Records. The debut single, Rule the World, was released at the end of March and is another YouTube hit for the band, with 2.5 million views so far.

Axis Mundi is a two new festivals being held in Revelstoke — one in September and the other in June. The inaugural Axis Mundi Harvest Festival will take place September 18–20. The multi-genre festivals will feature events related to music, arts, adventure sports and the environment. There will be events downtown during the day, before the festival shifts to RMR for the nightly music festival.

Other major acts playing include Ashley MacIsaac, the Floozies, Adham Shaikh, Buckman Coe, Grounders and Sticky Fingers.

City should look at long-term suitability of sewer lagoons, expert says Sewer, from page 1 around the lagoon maxed out at a miniscule 0.006 parts per million.

However, in a May 22 letter to Thomas, Horsman wrote that as the temperature rises, biological activity in the lagoons increases, resulting in reduced oxygen levels and increased release of odour-causing hydrogen sulfide (H2S). “The current odour complaints appear to correlate with the onset of warmer weather, and hence warmer wastewater temperatures,” he writes.

His recommendation is to add mixers to improve the amount of oxygen in the first lagoon.

The city says it is looking into that, but unfortunately it could prove to be costly. “Use of chemicals to suppress or reduce H2S in the wastewater are effective but often result in high operating costs when implemented as a primary odour control measure,” wrote Horsman.

And it should only be a short-term solution, he adds. “While improved mixing in the lagoon will reduce future odour emissions, it will not eliminate the potential for odours from the lagoon,” he wrote. “For this reason and given the proximity of local residents to the existing lagoons we recommend the City conduct a more in-depth evaluation of the capacity, overall effectiveness, and longterm suitability of the City lagoons.”

Council was set to discuss the report at its meeting on Tuesday, May 26, after press time.

Mixed results over busy weekend for boys soccer teams CHRIS MACDONALD JEFF WILSON

Revelstoke Youth Soccer This past Sunday, 13 teams from Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, and Salmon Arm made the journey to Revelstoke for another Thompson Okanagan Youth Soccer League (TOYSL) Jamboree.

In the morning, our U11 Boys’ Development team faced off against the first of two Kelowna teams for the day.

Revelstoke started out strong with solid passes and a desire to win every ball. We were also the first on the scoreboard with a clever goal from Nelson Luxmoore after he found his way past the Kelowna goalie to earn a clear shot on net.

Trailing by a goal, the Kelowna team seemed to ignite and they regained control of the game posting 3 goals in the next 30 minutes. Revelstoke nearly narrowed the

gap with a goal line struggle that seemed to go well for Revelstoke, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul against the keeper.

The boys rallied their spirits and continued to play well, but they were not able to stop two more goals from Kelowna late in the game.

In the afternoon, the boys faced up against another Kelowna team that they have never been able to beat. Undaunted from their morning loss, the first half of this game was an exciting mix of opportunities and close calls. With no score at the half and with the wind at their backs, Revelstoke strengthened their resolve and it wasn’t long before Thomas MacDonald sent a perfect pass through the Kelowna defensive line to the feet of Alex Gribbon who quickly put the ball in the back of the net.

With a keen awareness of what can happen to a one-goal lead, the midfielders worked extra hard to win each ball and the

defensive line – anchored by Rogan Campbell, McKinley Buchanan, and Brodie Patry – repelled each Kelowna attack to hold on to the game for Revelstoke.

The U11 team would like to thank the Revelstoke Youth Soccer Association and all of the parent volunteers who helped set up and host this jamboree. We would also like to thank The Village Idiot, Ursus Mountain Homes, and Grizzly Auto for the pizza party after the game.

The Revelstoke U14 boys team also had a busy weekend at home hosting two games.

The team is in the second half of its season and is now playing teams they have already seen once out of town.

Saturday was hot and sunny as the boys hosted Vernon down on Centennial Field.

With a number of players away on a band trip, the remaining group buckled down and came back from being down twice to triumph with a 3-2 win.

The entire group was needed as the weather was a factor with Vernon having a much larger bench. After the game the boys cooled off in the Columbia with a number of Vernon players and coaches who joined us at the boat launch.

Sunday was overcast and windy as the boys hosted Kamloops up at Queen Elizabeth Park. All the other fields were busy as the boys U11 development team hosted their annual Jamboree.

Once again the boys played hard and emerged triumphant with a 4-2 win in convincing style. After the game a number of players went on to referee for the younger teams who took over Revelstoke for the day.

All in all it was a soccer filled weekend in which the boys did their home town proud.

Next weekend sees another double header as the boys host Salmon Arm on Saturday and Kelowna on Sunday.

Marion York passed away peacefully in Kamloops on Saturday May 9th, 2015.

She is sadly missed by her loving husband Ron and lovingly remembered by her sons Christopher of Montreal and Bretton of Kamloops, grandchild Kim and great grandchild Lola as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and relatives. Marion is predeceased by her mother and father James and Annie MacDonald.

On August 2nd, 2014, Marion celebrated her 76th birthday with the joy of entertaining many of our close friends and family at our home with music and refreshments. To her it was a celebration of her life doing what she loved to do, entertaining and having fun with her friends and family.

Obituaries Ronald Gordon Lind

Ronald Gordon Lind passed away suddenly at his residence in Revelstoke on Friday, May 15th, 2015 at the age of 64 years. A Memorial Service was held at the Revelstoke United Church on Saturday May 23rd, with Reverend Ken Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Revelstoke Railway Museum or any charitable organization.

Larry was born in Beavermouth, B.C. on January 20, 1951 and had been a life-long resident of Revelstoke. He was a member of the Elks Club and the A.T.V. Club. Larry enjoyed camping and fishing. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching hockey, baseball and football.

Ron was born in Kamloops, B.C. on August 30, 1950 and had been a resident of Revelstoke for most of his life. He enjoyed hiking, photography, gold panning, and star gazing among many other things. Ron was an avid baker and many friends were fortunate to share in Ronâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tasty treasures. He was an avid community volunteer and was always helping others in any way he could.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, David and Edie Bennetts. He is survived by his wife Sharon of Revelstoke; two children: Krista Bennetts (Jason Robinson) and Kevin (Laura) Bennetts, all of Revelstoke; three grandchildren: Rebecca (Kevin) of Coquitlam and Raylin and Jaclyn of Revelstoke; siblings: Marie, Rick, May (Art), Carol (Gord) and Linda, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ron was predeceased by his father Roy in 2002 and his second wife Phyllis in 2012. He is survived by two children: Kristi Lind of Revelstoke and Jamie (Virgie) Lind of Revelstoke; two grandchildren: Claire and Cole, both of Revelstoke; his mother Jean Lind of Salmon Arm, one uncle Bill (Betty) of Vancouver; the mother of his children, Susan Lind of Revelstoke, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends.

Revelstoke’s own Kellen Viznaugh placed extremely well in the BC Junior Provincial Road Cycling Championships held in Penticton this past weekend. Racing against some of the best young riders in the province, Kellen came in seventh overall and fifth among B.C. riders in the road ride on Sunday, a grueling 105 kilometres “It was a tough race,” said Kellen. “It was steep and fast, with really sketchy descents where we were hitting 80 km/hr with traffic hazards. I felt great though, and was able to attack a couple of

times throughout the race.”

There were some dramatic moments when Kellen dropped his chain on the last climb of the last lap, putting him in a tough position. But he pushed hard and made it back up to the chase group to cross the finish line with the race leaders.

The championship weekend also included a criterium, a race held on a short course where the riders do multiple laps. Kellen held his own in that contest as well, finishing strongly in the main field of competitors.
