NORTHWEST FISHING FOR ANGLERS 2015

Northwest BC a Fishing Paradise Welcome to this publication which will help make the most of your fishing journey through Northwestern British Columbia. Once again we’re pleased to show you some of the catches of the last while as provided by residents of the northwest and other places. Northwestern B.C. is truly a fishing paradise, regardless of what your preferred method or target catch and you’ll notice that in the pictures contained here in. For those who like the serenity of trout fishing, there are plenty of easily accessible lakes in the region to try your luck at. For those who enjoy the thrill and the fight associated with going after the big one, the region’s rivers provide ample opportunities to go after a variety of Pacific salmon. And for those who want to hit the open waters of the Pacific in search of salmon, halibut, lingcod,

prawns or crabs, Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert and Kitimat all offer some exciting ocean fishing opportunities and plenty of professional guides to help ensure your trip to the coast is a success. Along with the exceptional fishing opportunities is exceptional scenery. With bald eagles, grizzly bears, deer, gray whales, and the rare Kermode bear among the wildlife that calls the Northwest home, the opportunities to take in a unique wilderness experience is always present.

WITH THANKS

The Terrace Standard thanks those who provided them and we hope you’ll share the thrill of the catch as much as did those who caught the fish in the first place.

Off the Track As the summer approaches, it’s important to remind people of the danger of crossing, or walking on, the train tracks to get to a desired fishing spot on the Skeena River. It seems like the message is catching on. Local CN enforcement officer Kelly Yendrys said that he’s issued tickets to fewer people than when he arrived here in 2006. “CN is pleased to see that education and enforcement on the dangers of trespassing has resulted in a significant decrease in the number of fishermen trespassing on our right of way,” said CN public affairs official Kelli Svendsen in looking at statistics gathered the past several years.

Tanya McCullough 10lb Coho, Terrace BC

“As summer is approaching, we would like to remind the community that when people trespass on railway property, they take risks that can result in serious injuries and fatalities. CN will continue our enforcement efforts as a matter of public safety.” Yendrys patrols the area from Endako to Prince Rupert.

Wild Salmon & Steelhead Contributed by Kermodei Tourism

Scenic beauty, a vast variety of waterways and a fleet of powerful fish make this region an unparalleled destination for big scale adventures. Each year anglers are lured to the Skeena Valley in the hopes of landing the big one and it’s a known fact that more salmon and steelhead are caught in the Skeena River and its tributaries than any other place in the world. The fishing opportunities are diverse and last throughout the year depending on the species and watershed. Steelhead fishing is prime in the early spring and late fall while the summer offers a chance to catch all five species of Pacific salmon—King, Sockeye, Coho, Pink, and Chum. Tropy-sized trout such as Rainbow, Kokanee, Lake, Dolly Varden, Mountain Whitefish, Lake Whitefish, and Burbot can also be found in the lakes year round.

Roasted Salmon with Green Herbs 2010, Barefoot Contessa How Easy is That?, All Rights Reserved

Prep: 10 min Inactive: 25 min Cook: 12 min

INGREDIENTS 1 (2- to 2 1/2-pound) skinless salmon fillet Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup good olive oil 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/2 cup minced scallions 1/2 cup minced fresh dill 1/2 cup minced fresh parsley 1/4 cup dry white wine Lemon wedges, for serving

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Place the salmon fillet in a glass, ceramic, or stainless-steel roasting dish and season it generously with salt and pepper. Whisk together the olive oil and lemon juice and drizzle the mixture evenly over the salmon. Let it stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. In a small bowl, stir together the scallions, dill, and parsley. Scatter the herb mixture over the salmon fillet, turning it so that both sides are generously coated with the green herbs. Pour the wine around the fish fillet. Roast the salmon for 10 to 12 minutes, until almost cooked in the center at the thickest part. The center will be firm with just a line of uncooked salmon in the very center. (I peek by inserting the tip of a small knife.) Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Cut the salmon crosswise into serving pieces and serve hot with lemon wedges.

Fast Facts

Contributed by Kermodei Tourism

The world record for catching (and releasing) a 99-pound Chinook Salmon is held by a visiting German tourist who had her first fishing experience in the Skeena River in 2001.

Daniel & Jamie DeProy, Coho Salmon, Gitnadoix River

In the summer of 2009, Ali Howard swam the length of the Skeena River, a 610-kilometre journey from the headwaters to the Pacific Ocean just like a migrating salmon. Supported by a team of experts, her goal was to raise awareness of the environmental threats to the Skeena including coalbed methane drilling and pipeline development.
