GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
After a closure of almost five years, the Silverton Lakeshore Inn will soon reopen, but the owner is appealing for the return of artifacts and equipment recently stolen from the historic building. Maurice Palmer, who has owned the 118-year-old hotel since 2006, told 103.5 Juice FM he was shocked to discover it was vandalized and looted sometime over the last six months. Damage includes broken windows and doors and evidence someone tried to set the building on fire. “People came in and partied and took quite a bit of stuff,” he said.
Missing are five air conditioners from the front room s; two compressors in the electrical room that cooled the beer frid ge and walk-in cooler; washroom mir rors, five historical photos of Silverton and Sandon; an old yellow Silverton hockey jersey that was framed in the bar; a metal British American oil sign; and an 18-inch diame ter faux silver dollar on the wal l of the Silver Dol lar Room in the basement. (The latter is of unk now n vintage but was probably made of zinc.)
The Selki rk Hotel (right) is seen in a Palmer says he’s not sure if one person or several was responsible for the thefts. “It’s hard to say, but it had to have been someone mechanically inclined because the compressors run from the electrical room to the walk-in cooler, which is 30 to 40 feet. Someone had to know how to take it apart. They would have needed a truck to take it out.” As of Friday, he didn’t have any leads and so far has not filed a police complaint, but he’s offering a reward for the missing items or information leading to the culprits. “Hopefully someone returns the stuff. It would be nice to get it back, no questions asked.” Palmer, a Kamloops resident, renovated the hotel and reopened it in 2007, running it for a few years before leasing it out. In 2010, he put the building up for sale, and it has been

He’s been back once a year to tidy the place up, and now has a caretaker. Palmer has decided to re-open the hotel for longer-term accommodation and will rent six rooms at $500 per month. He also expects to lease the restaurant soon. “The hotel will soon be open and have another heartbeat,” he said. The Silverton Inn was originally called the Selkirk Hotel, and opened in 1897 under the partnership of Brandon and Barrett. Ninety-seventh in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Last week, we saw that David Kane who, with his brother George, christened the Kaslo townsite around 1891, believed the river of the same name honoured a placer miner named John Kaslo or Jean Kasleau, who was part of a Hudson’s Bay Co. party. Other repeated this. John C. Goodfellow wrote in 1939 to Dr. Robie L. Reid, in a letter now held by UBC special collections: “The late David Whitely (better known here as ‘Red Paddy’) used to speak of ‘Old Johnny Kasleau’ as if he were a living tradition in the Kootenays of the early ‘90s … But I must confess that about Kaslo himself I know very little.” The August 1944 edition of Cominco Magazine stated: “Frank Casleau, a French Canadian trapper, had a cabin at the mouth of the creek.” A.L. Harvey around 1949 in a letter held by the BC Archives: “Yes, John Casleau. This is correct. He left here in 1895, never heard of him since.” Kate Johnson wrote in The Kootenaian of July 6, 1967: “The stream was named for John Kasleaw who arrived in the Kootenays in the ‘80s with a Hudson Bay party to secure lead for bullets from the outcrop of the present Bluebell mine. His name spelled Kasleaw was later shortened to Kaslo.” David Scott observed in the February 1980 edition of BC Outdoors: “There is scant evidence that the gentleman ever existed, but that has never mattered; in the mirage of a sparkling winter night, Kasloites can still see smoke rising from his lonely cabin; they are sure that his name Casleau was simply changed to Kaslo.” The 1881 Canadian census finds a John Caslow in Ontario, a William Caslo in Nova Scotia, but no one named Kaslo or Kasleau. census. However, one of the petitioners for a post office at Bear Lake City in 1892 appears to have been a John C. Creslo. While it’s probably unrelated, there’s a Kaslokan Point in Alaska and a Kaslow Prairie State Reserve in Iowa. In the US, there are 100 phone listings for the surname Kaslow, 15 for Kaslo (including a fellow who lives on Kootenai St. in Boise), seven for Caslo, and zero for Kasleau. In Canada, there are no listings under any of those spellings. A Google search turns up 358,000 hits for Kaslow, 92,000 for Caslo, and about 1,000 for Casleau, but fewer than 100 for Kasleau. William Bambury offered another theory in an annotated copy of Tales of the Kootenays: “I was credibly informed that Kaslo Creek was named through a slurred pronunciation of the name of an Irish prospector named Paddy Costello.” However, the better bet is that Kaslo’s name has a different origin entirely. Selkirk College Transitional Training student Natasha Bidinoff-Gardiner opened the Branching Out Conference at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus with an inspiring and touching speech that had the audience on their feet.
Selkirk College at Branching Out Conference Selkirk College Transitional Training students from across the region put together an inspirational three-day conference earlier this month that showcased the talents of differently-abled adults. Called Branching Out, the conference featured 19 different presenters and 18 workshops between May 12 and 14 at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. More than 120 participants took part in the conference that was geared towards practitioners, instructors and families of adults with diverse skills. The conference was opened by Nelson-based student Natasha Bidinoff-Gardiner who set the tone for the three days with her touching words. “We didn’t ask to be born with a disability or to be physically injured or physically abused, but it happened,” Bidinoff-Gardiner told the audience gathered at Mary Hall. “We are judged and mocked. But instead of focusing on picking on each other’s weaknesses, why not learn to work together, accept each other and collaborate to make life beautiful.” Bidinoff-Gardiner explained that the seeds for the confer-
ence were planted two years ago by her classmate Summer Clement who wanted to host an event that would deal with topics relevant to people with disabilities. In 2013, the Transitional Training classes – part of the Adult Special Education (ASE) Program – hosted the auction at the Selkirk College Gala and raised more than $12,000. It was those funds that helped provide the ability to host the conference. “We wanted to prove to ourselves and to others how truly able we are, in fact how truly remarkable we are,” said BidinoffGardiner. “We decided that rather than waiting for others to do for us, we would do for ourselves.” One of the keynote speakers at Branching Out was Ean Price, an inventor, entrepreneur, board director, volunteer and founder of ICAN Resource Group Inc. Born with Muscular Dystrophy, Price discussed what self-respect and respect for others means to him as a differently-abled adult and how people can improve life through increased respect. The conference featured workshops in massage, com-
munication, fire safety, self-defence, entrepreneurship, dealing with stress, yoga, cooking and more. There was a gala banquet at Nelson’s Mary Hall, a dance and plenty of opportunities for social engagement. “The entire event was inspirational for all because it was so positive,” said Allison Alder, the Chair of the Selkirk College School of Academic Upgrading & Development. “It will have a lasting impact in the community as the event’s inclusivity and the students’ capacity continues to ripple outward. Everyone had shivers and tears hearing first-hand what it’s like to live with a disability in our society. Many new bonds were forged and ideas hatched.” Selkirk College offers Transitional Training classes in Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks and Trail. The classes enable adults with barriers or disabilities learn to participate more fully in daily life within their communities, including preparing for paid or unpaid work. With a mission to nurture interdependence and independence through meaningful learning, the program builds upon unique personal
strengths, confidence, awareness and skills. Bidinoff-Gardiner has been in the Nelson class for three years and has helped organize three major events during that time. The 22-year-old completed her core high school classes in the program and with a passion for singing hopes to be admitted into the Selkirk College Contemporary Music & Technology Program. The closing words of her opening address at the conference had the audience on their feet. “We are hoping this information will soak deeply into your minds and hearts,” she said. “We want people to understand that we are part of this world, and we deserve to be respected and to be loved. Let’s not forget about the message of this conference and take up this challenge to make a difference to brighten the world.” All four Selkirk College Transitional Training classes were instrumental in organizing the Branching Out Conference. Organizers were assisted by the generous sponsorship of Columbia Basin Trust, the Grand Forks Rotary Club and Community Futures Boundary.

Group looks to community to form association Sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
The Dewdney Trail is more than a pathway in Canadian history – it formed the British Columbian landscape as we know it and shaped the region we in the West Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary, call home. For decades the Trail Horseman’s Society and Boundary Stockhorse Association maintained the trail, but over time due age and other circumstances, the group hasn’t been able to regularly travel through on foot and horse to ensure pathways are clear and in good shape. Now in its 150th year, the iconic route is in need of 21st century restoration and preservation so Rossland’s Richie Mann and Graham Jones are leading the way. The men are asking for volunteers schooled in everything from history, topography, non-profits, law, forestry, engineering and grant writing to lend their know-how in forming an association that can oversee remediation of the historic trail. “If we can bring all these people together who come with different backgrounds, knowledge and experience you get this collaboration of abilities and enthusiasm to get
this done,” said Jones. While there are sections of path across the province that are maintained by B.C. chapters of back country horsemen, such as the Manning Park path, there are areas not actively being preserved, explained Mann. “The back country horsemen are taking on the challenge of forming an association and in time, we would like to see them remain a supporting group and have people come together so it has an identity of its own,” said Mann. To launch the initiative and raise the profile of the local historic trail, the men are hosting a public meeting on June 16 at 7 p.m. in Castlegar’s Chances Casino. “If we become a successful example of what can be done then others can look to the West Kootenay and Boundary group,” said Jones. He said the restoration and preservation project isn’t just a matter of gathering brute strength to clear brush and partake in other physical labour. “We need people with political and government experience,” explained Jones. “There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes like compiling original documents, making sure private land owners are aware of what’s happening and

Photo by Sheri Regnier a lot of other technical issues.” Until about 10 years ago, the Dewdney Trail was used primarily by hikers and horseback riders so other than overgrown brush or fallen trees, the route remained quite pristine.
But modern sport on two wheels has caused damage mainly to the steeper terrain, and areas that are deeply grooved will require remediation materials such as aggregates. “The Ministry of Forests has
been a lot of help,” said Jones. “Instead of individuals, they prefer to deal an association that works together in harmony, this is where we can have our input with support,

materials or whatever those aspects would be.” For information on the Dewdney Trail restoration project, contact Mann at 362.9465 or by email at richiemann11@gmail. com. Jones can be reached at 362.9966 o jumbuck65@yahoo. ca. Another key member of the initiative is local historian Sam McBride, a descendent of Edgar Dewdney, the gentleman who began carving out the trail in 1860. Dewdney was said to be a giant (6’4”) in stature compared to others of his time. He was a hardy young surveyor, originally from Wales, when Colonial Governor Fredrick Seymour of Victoria
hired him to continue the monumental feat. The 1865 mission was to construct a pathway for man and horse from through the Kootenays to Wild Horse Creek. The pack trail served two purposes. It provided a Canadian presence in the region known to be rich in gold, and it gave prospectors a leg up on the Americans who tried to slip into the region through Washington territory and grab the precious cargo before heading back over the line. “Without the trail we could have had a whole different landscape,” said McBride. “We may not be in the same country if it were not for the Dewdney Trail,” he explained, mentioning the United States purchased Alaska and taking over B.C. would have
provided a connection between the south and north land mass. “So the Dewdney Trail was a statement of sovereignty for Britain and later Canada,” he said. “And (gave) protection against American encroachment.” Described as a rugged and torturous route, but Canadian all the way, the Dewdney Trail runs about 720 kilometres from Fort Hope on the Fraser River through to present day Hope, Grand Forks, Christina Lake, and Rossland. The trail then carries east through the Pend d’Oreille, Creston to Cranbrook’s Wild Horse Creek (Fort Steele). Locally, the original trail begins near Christina Lake and follows through the mountainous region approximately 39 kilometres east to Paterson.

Sports Players and coaches from the Kootenay Whitecaps Academy travelled to Vancouver May 14-16 to attend a Vancouver Whitecaps game and participate in practice session with Whitecaps staff. Photo by Jane Fox
Kootenay Whitecaps Academy players train in Vancouver Craig Lindsay West Kootenay Advertiser
The Kootenay Whitecaps Academy has been busy. Although the spring season still has five sessions left, the team took a trip to Vancouver to attend a Whitecaps game and participate in some training sessions put on by the Vancouver Whitecaps players and staff. The Kootenay Whitecaps Academy has been around for a couple of years and is one of seven regional centres throughout the province. Brett Adams, program coordinator and head coach, said there are 250 kids total playing in two prospects centres, one in Cranbrook and one in Nelson. The ages range from 9-18 and include both boys and girls. The academy goes throughout the year from Septem-
ber to April and then breaks for summer for the camps. Adams said 70 players, mostly from the West Kootenay, went down to Vancouver for the trip, which took place on May 14-16. “It was a smaller group than we usually take but nevertheless it was a fantastic trip,” he said. “They (the players) got a chance to work with some of the Vancouver based staff. On Thursday (May 14), we went straight to the game and got to watch them (Vancouver Whitecaps) play against the Seattle Sounders, which is the Whitecaps big rival. It was a complete sellout.” Adams said on Friday the players participated in two training sessions along with a team bonding exercise. On the final day, the players had another session and then
returned to the Kootenays. “The feedback we received from the head coach, Bart Choufour, is the Kootenays is growing in ability,” said Adams. “The style is changing and the understanding and the level of the players is getting stronger and stronger.” Adams said some of the players in the academy have been playing for two years now and it’s evident in their play. “I am very proud of the progress in the last two years,” he said. “We are starting to create some very gifted technical players who want to play the game of soccer the right way.” The summer camps start July 7-9 with a prospect camp in Cranbrook. The first camp in the West Kootenay is July 13-17 with a skills camp in Nelson. July 27-31 there is
a skills camp in Castlegar. Aug 17-21 is the Nelson prospects camp. Aug. 31-Sept. 2 is the Nelson attacking speed camp/goalkeeper camp. Adams said the summer camps are open to any young soccer players regardless of whether they are in the Whitecaps program or not. He said campers can expect a fun time with a lot of top notch coaching. “We’re the only summer camp provider that can boast the highest coaching qualification you can get in world soccer,” he said. “We have very qualified staff. At these camps there will be visits from professional players from Vancouver who will come for the day. We’ll also be visited by the Vancouver based staff.” Adams said the Kootenay staff is very proud of having their first
player move on to university. Nolan Derosa from Trail has signed with Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops to play with the Wolfpack soccer team next year after playing in the Kootenay Whitecaps Academy for a couple of years. “He’s 18 and he’s graduating from our program at the end of the spring,” said Adams. “He’s going off to university in Kamloops. That was a link through our program. We got him the try-out and he got himself in. That’s just in a year and a bit’s time. I think Nolan will be the first of many.” To register for any camps or for more information visit whitecapsfc.com/youth/programs/camps/ kootenays-skills-camps or contact Adams at badams@whitecapsfc. com.

Thursday, May 28, 2015 West Kootenay Advertiser
News Former Columbia Basin Trust CEO to run for federal Liberals The federal Liberals have announced Nelson resident Don Johnston as their candidate in Kootenay Columbia for the federal election expected in October. Johnston is perhaps best known as the former CEO of the Columbia Basin Trust and Canada World Youth. Asked why he’s running, Johnston said: “Because I want my Canada back. My Canada is one that is very different form the one Mr. [Stephen] Harper represents. My Canada is one that cares about the role we play on the
international stage, and where we return to using our advantages as a middle power to help convene people to help introduce positive dialogue in difficult international discussions.” Johnston is so far the only West Kootenay-based candidate. The others include incumbent Conservative David Wilks, New Democrat Wayne Stetski, and the Green Party’s Bill Green in the race, all of whom live in East Kootenay. The expanded Kootenay Columbia riding will include Nelson, Salmo, and Kaslo.
Correction In last week’s issue of the West Kootenay Advertiser regarding the story, “Art collective embraces metamorphosis,” we erroneously stated the mural is on Vernon Street. In fact, it is on Victoria Street.

Documentary Film Script Workshop in Nelson Having a great idea for a documentary film is one thing; figuring out what comes next can be the challenge. A documentary film script development workshop with Vancouver filmmaker and teacher Colin Browne on Saturday, May 30 is an opportunity to find that next step and ramp up the skills necessary to move from concept to successful documentary film. Browne is a co-founder of Simon Fraser University’s Praxis Centre for Screenwriters and the Art of Documentary Workshops. He taught filmmaking at SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts and sits on the board of directors of the Vancouver International Film Festival. His documentary films include White Lake, Father and Son, Linton Garner: I Never Said Good-bye. The May 30 workshop runs 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Oxygen Art Centre in Nelson, located at 320 Vernon St. (alley entrance). Cost is $75. Registration is available through Nelson’s Elephant Mountain Literary Festival website, emlfestival. com/courses. Limited enrollment means that early registration is highly encouraged.
We need carriers in your area!
“Whether you intend to shoot the film independently on a low budget, or whether you plan to write a proposal that will win the support of international funders and broadcasters, getting it right at the early stages will pay off,” says Browne. A Governor General’s Literary Award-nominated poet, Browne will also launch his latest book of poems, The Hatch (Talonbooks 2015), on Friday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Oxygen Art Centre. Opening for Browne at the launch will be 2015 Elephant Mountain Literary Festival writerin-residence and 2011-2013 Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate Fred Wah. Browne’s workshop and reading are sponsored by Oxygen Art Centre and Elephant Mountain Literary Festival. Elephant Mountain Literary Festival runs July 10-12 in Nelson, showcasing local and visiting writers in a 100-mile Gala, All-Star Author Reading, panel discussions and more. This year’s special guests are Bob Bossin, Marina Endicott, and Kate Pullinger. Full information about all course offerings and Festival events can be found at emlfestival.com.

Warfield Kootenay Savings closing Liz Bevan West Kootenay Advertiser
The Warfield Kootenay Savings Credit Union (KSCU) branch is closing on July 3 after 18 years of serving the community. Nancy Crockett, vice president of sales and member experience at the credit union, says the branch is losing its in-person banking services, but customers will still have access to an ATM and a night deposit box. “We will have ATM and night depository service,” she said. “It will be in the same spot for now, but it may change in the future.” The six employees currently working at the Kootenay Savings Credit Union (KSCU) branch won’t be based out of Warfield anymore, and Crockett says the tellers and managerial staff will be transferred to other locations.
“This branch is a unionized environment,” she said, adding that other KSCU branches are non-union.”So, we will be following our collective agreement and going through the bumping process and working with the union and our human resources department through the transition.” The building itself is owned by KSCU, but the future of the location isn’t yet known. “We don’t have any plans in the immediate future,” said Crockett. “But we own various properties all across the Kootenays, so we will be looking to see what we will be doing with those in the near future.” The credit union is closing the branch because of a decrease in customer traffic and in-person banking over the last few years. According to the credit union, customers are using online and

mobile banking in increasing numbers, no longer justifying keeping the doors open. “It has become increasingly difficult to justify two branches in close proximity of one another in the Greater Trail area,” read a press release announcing the closure. The Warfield branch opened in 1997 when KSCU merged with the already existing Warfield Credit Union in the same location. The company’s commitment to original credit union customers at the time was to keep the branch open for at least three years, but have stayed open for nearly 20 years. Warfield branch customers will now have to go down the hill to the Trail Branch on Farwell St. to do their day-to-day in person banking. The downtown Trail branch is open six-days-a-week with a 24-hour ATM.
